Suffering from “Try to not combine two hyperfixations together and make a xreader with characters from one media set in another media’s world” challenge
I don’t even know if the daycare fandom would be interested in the boys with YN being set in the Beastars world

I should’ve done this before but better late than never. Here’s a list of upcoming essays I plan on doing this year.
Warriors Part Four and Five: Four shouldn’t take too long but five… we’ll see.
A relatively short post about Warriors cover artists: This one may come out before part five since it shouldn’t take long at all. No rereading and quote searching for this one.
Amygdala Addendum: The big one. I know a lot of yall are waiting for this and trust me, it will be out this year. Tbh, I find Amygdala unpleasant. It’s not fun to rip on like Fourth Wing or Warriors. It’s just pretentious, long, and boring. But there’s a lot of writing lessons to be learned from it. The addendum is very long already but I realized recently that I need to re-read the book in order to provide a more accurate and thorough analysis so… it’s gonna take a bit
Wereworld 6: War of the Werelords: The review for the final book of Wereworld shouldn’t take long at all. The Wereworld reviews are nice pallet cleansers from the hell I put myself through.
Bendy and the Ink Machine: Last year, on a whim, I played the Bendy games and had a blast. I really like the story and I want to talk about it. This one is already partially done. I already completed my analysis of both games. I already read the books Dreams Come to Life and The Lost Ones. All I have to do now is read Fade to Black (which came out whilst I was writing the post lol) and write the reviews for the books. When the new Bendy game comes out, I’ll talk about that in a different post (if I have anything to say about it).
The Dragons of Requiem series MEGA review: The next big project is about a book series no one cares about written by an indie author no one has heard of. Daniel Arenson is an author I’ve been fascinated by for years now. I’ve always wanted to do a trilogy by trilogy breakdown of his work, similar to how I’m doing the Warriors series. But unlike Warriors, I absolutely hate the Requiem series. They’re bad. Not Fourth Wing bad, but bad nonetheless. They’re fascinatingly bad and I have a lot to say. Part one of this may be out near the end of the year.
Beastars part two: Okay so this one will take a LONG time to get out. I highly doubt it will be out this year at all. It most definitely won’t be out before season three of the anime lol. Arc two is my favorite arc in the series and I want to do it justice. So yeah don’t expect this one anytime soon.
Oh and Onyx Storm: When the book comes out, I’ll do a review when I can get my hands on a library copy. Like hell I’m giving Yarros money.
My reviews/essays/ramblings are very long as you know so it takes a lot of time for me to get through them. Plus I’m working on a novel which is a bigger priority. And my depression came back so that also slows down the process. Regardless, this is the plan. I’m glad people enjoy my unhinged ramblings. It’s motivating :)

July 2023 Wrap-up
Total Books Read: 26 (Plus I finished 3 stories in Sunflower Season)
Favorite Book(s): Beastars; Fire Force; Case Closed
Book That Surprised Me: Men’s Life had an actually kind of nice ending to it that I enjoyed more than the other volumes!
Book That Didn’t Meet Expectations: I don’t think any book was terribly disappointing.
Any Rereads? Love Com; Ouran High School Host Club; Hana-Kimi; Dengeki Daisy
Series Finished Reading:
Backstage Prince - This manga was pretty cute. I honestly wished it had been longer XD because I don’t think I’ve read a manga with this type of plot line before and it could have some good drama.
Men’s Life - I was pretty meh about this series from the get-go. The whole “girl has to pretend to boy (twin brother) and live in a guy’s dormitory and falls in love with roommate” cliche, but it did have a nice cute ending that I enjoyed.
Sweetness and Lightning - OMG, this manga has been so cute. I love the father/daughter storyline, although I did kind of skim read most of the hardcore cooking scenes. LOL. But all around I thought it was a good manga with interesting characters and storyline, even with the detailed cooking stuff.
Ella Enchanted - Alright, so I love, love, love the movie was interested in reading the book. Can I tell you that I pissed that they changed Prince Charmont’s character??? UGH. I really liked the book, though idk that I’d read another from this author as it’s very much a YA novel and I was pretty disappointed in her father not getting a fair punishment for how horribly he treated Ella and was a pretty scummy character all around and yet still got the trade for the kingdom and have a pretty good ending for someone so horrible...That said, I am glad I read it and there is a lot of stuff I enjoyed from the book compared to the movie.

Potentially hot take: adaptations of written media should act as, in some way, fix-it fics of their source material.
What with the new WCAnimated casting call, it got me thinking about the future of the project and the nature of adaptations as a whole.
Let me get into a side-tangent, I swear this is important.
I watched the anime Beastars back when it was released in 2019 (well, I watched it in 2020, but shortly after it was released). Excited for the next season, I went ahead and read the manga up to its latest release.
Then the manga's ending came out. And people were rightly pissed at the series' resolution. Character arcs were foregone, societal notions went in backwards directions, and I'm having a really hard time wording this without spoiling anime-only fans.
Now that the anime has a complete manga to draw from, it has every opportunity to take what the manga failed in doing and avoid that or rework it. Although in all honesty, they really should've written the snake out. What narrative purpose does she serve? Nothing. You can write her out and replace her scenes with something else with the same result.
I've been rereading The Prophecies Begin, and there's a lot of bad writing, illogical plot directions, lore that never gets touched upon, and a heavy dose of Early Installment Weirdness on top of it that drag it down. In light of this, I desperately wish that WCAnimated does what it can to add fix-it fic elements to its adaptation of Into the Wild (and, if it's doing the rest of TPB, to the rest of its plot).
Some suggestions I'd make include:
Enable Dustpaw and Sandpaw to become warriors before Firepaw and Graypaw. Also wait about three more months for Firepaw and Graypaw to be apprenticed. At the bare minimum, two months.
Let Frostfur's kits all be apprenticed at once. Not in Fire and Ice. Similarly, let them all graduate at roughly the same time.
Write the kittens (Frostfur's babies, Brindleface's babies, Swiftkit, Lynxkit, and Mistlekit) to have more of a presence.
Similarly, give Rosetail a presence, or say she died before Into the Wild.
Write the nursery more like the modern nursery, Frostfur is there because she has her babies to take care of while Speckletail and Goldenflower are "perma-queens" as the fandom likes to call them. May I propose the name "matriarch"? Brindleface isn't pregnant yet, and hasn't had any children of her own, so she can be a warrior in Into the Wild.
Have Lionclan, Tigerclan, and Leopardclan come into play more often. Let Fireheart hear of more tales of the Mythical Clans rather than just being mentioned every other book and then forgotten once the arc's over. One could take the Watership Down approach by having the mood of the tale play into the upcoming events, much like the placement of the story of El-ahrairah and the Black Rabbit of Inlé. It's more interesting than the thirty-thousand hunting and patrol scenes where nothing of import happens.
Have Fireheart tell people things, but have people not act upon his warnings for damn good reasons, or at least have them try, but fail to do so in time.
If you're keeping all of Graystripe's actions from Fire and Ice to A Dangerous Path intact, I strongly recommend he should not be chosen as Firestar's second deputy. Instead, I'd advise the team to make Longtail Firestar's deputy for sticking to his Clan, actually investing more than enough time into his apprentice, and it'd close up a nice little redemption arc for Longtail. In this vein, I'd like Longtail to get a proper redemption arc.
Kill Brokenstar at the end of Into the Wild or Fire and Ice. This BS about "If we kill him, we'd be no better than him" is stupid and they should've just shoved yew in his mouth the moment they had him. He murdered kittens, and he later went on to provide the tools Tigerclaw needed to throw his coup. Kill that heartless son of a bitch.
Instead of exiling Tigerclaw, sentence him to death. He can get away from his execution and cause fear and worry like normal.
Snowkit still has a good shot at being a warrior, so let him live long enough to be apprenticed. Brackenfur's willing to take him on, let him. Speckletail doesn't have to move to the elders' den since she's too old to care for kits. She can move since she's just old, and still care for her son.
Let Sandstorm mentor Fernpaw or Tawnypaw. Preferably Fernpaw. Fireheart gave Ashpaw and Fernpaw to Dustpelt (good choice) and Darkstripe (bad choice), then took on Bramblepaw's training and gave Tawnypaw to Brackenfur since he was scared Tigerstar would lash out at her.
Properly explain the family tree and have characters react to each other with those proper dynamics. Have Bluestar and Whitestorm properly act like aunt-and-nephew (with that undercurrent of adopted mother vibes). For the family tree's sake, I'd advise to ignore Dustpelt being Ravenpaw, Frostfur, and Brindleface's brother (and Ravenpaw being the girls' brother for that measure). Treat Redtail and Sandpaw like actual father and daughter (it's your decision if you want Brindleface as her mom).
After getting comfortable living as a barn cat, have Ravenpaw either drop the -paw and just go by "Raven" or gift himself a proper warrior name like "Ravenwing".
Tigerstar could actually be faking the fact he's blessed with nine lives, threatening Runningnose into silence about it. Scourge doesn't kill him nine times over, it could just be an incredibly grievous wound.
In that vein, Nightstar could have eight lives like Sunstar did. Maybe because of his age and with greencough and carrion-sickness ravaging the camp, he dies multiple times over. Maybe Tigerclaw discreetly kills him?

I've been rereading Beastars desperately trying to find something from my memory...there's a bit of wordbuilding where they establish canines react to dog commands, right?? Like, Come and Stay and Good Boy???
At least one of those was shown in canon, right?????????

So one of the things I want the absolute MOST right now is to get some sort of confirmation that Shigaraki is going to be okay by the end of this story. I know the way it stands right now it’s impossible to see where Horikoshi will go but I just don’t see how he could end this story with the villains just being imprisoned and locked away to be forgotten. I just wanna know what you think with the current chapters since you are big on his redemption also, hopefully I can get some peace of mind lol.
Hello! So, I will caution that I can’t guarantee things; I’m not Horikoshi!
Bad writing can and does happen, unfortunately. How sad, Hamliet, lol.
Tumblr media
I’ve been burned by Tokyo Ghoul:re, Star Wars, and Game of Thrones most recently. I’ve heard Things about Demon Slayer’s and Beastar’s endings. At the same time, SnK seems like it’s heading towards a satisfying conclusion (for me *knocks on wood*) that’s a direct contrast GoT’s disaster ending. No story can be perfect, but: I am honestly not worried about BNHA blowing Shigaraki’s and Dabi’s redemption arcs. I’ll talk about what I am worried about a bit later.
See, this week I’ve been rereading the series, and Shigaraki’s and Dabi’s redemptions have both been built up pretty much the entire time they exist in the story (Himiko’s less so, but that’s pretty... on par for the course for a female character in this manga). I’ve covered Dabi’s build-up at length, but Shigaraki’s is also extremely obvious. He doesn’t have a save-the-cat moment like Dabi does (not for the first few arcs; later he does), but he has another trope that works to foreshadow redemption:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
If only, indeed. This is chapter 22. It’s child coding. I don’t mean that in the weird way people talk about child coding, but this is A Thing in stories wherein a technically adult character like Shigaraki is coded like a child. You don’t kill kids as “justice” or send them to prison; you get them help (think about FMA where the surviving homoculus is... the child).
(I also know people will be screaming HE’S TWENTY HE’S AN ADULT and yeah, sure, legally, but a story is not a court. I call this a side-effect of GoT: the belief that every story must repeat gritty reality and also a grimdark reflection of that reality. BNHA is not that. It’s optimistic, upbeat, and hopeful.)
The story is in part about Shigaraki’s growing into an adult and choosing what kind of person to be, as is par for the course for coming of age stories (nota bene: the central question of the characters in MHA, which they repeat to themselves constantly, is “who am I?”). Considering how controlled and infantilized Shigaraki is by AFO (who doesn’t seem to want him to grow), it seems like he and Deku will have a common enemy at some point.
Not to mention Shigaraki himself seeks out Deku to ask advice, like about ideals. Considering their ages it’s ironic, but Deku seems pretty likely to be the heroic example Shigaraki needs at some point. Deku’s whole thing is saving people. I really don’t see how people think a manga with the ideal of “saving people” even those who expressly do not want to be saved or whom the cost seems to great to save (Kouta and Eri) is going to end with “winning” over “saving.”
Also, prison isn’t saving. It kinda sucks, even in BNHA’s world. I am fully expecting some sort of prison break at some point, but the point is that prison isn’t acknowledged as a place to save people or even to rehabilitate them within the text of the manga. It’s a place of punishment for Stain, Chisaki, and AFO. Why would you send the redeemed/saved there? Also, Shigaraki has never been allowed to be free his whole life. Trading possession by AFO for becoming a possession in prison is... ick.
My main anxiety about the story which to be clear I don’t think will happen is that Shigaraki and/or Dabi have redemptive deaths. Their redemption I am 0% worried about, but the after I am a little nail-bitey because of the pro-punishment twists in media lately (Star Wars, Beastars, Demon Slayer). I have trust issues, lol. I don’t think this is likely to be the case because of what I outlined here for both of them.
Saving spiritually but not physically doesn’t really work for these characters and the specific roles they fill in the story. Redemptive death works best for older characters (I am not trying to be ageist, please; I am just saying that this is a trope) like Darth Vader, for characters who have not suffered very much (Shadow Weaver in SheRa), and for characters who “shoot the puppy.” The redemptive death of Kylo Ren in Star Wars was... not critically well-received because a character who suffered much, who is young and in love and has so much to live for, just dies for... what really? It feels bleak. It doesn’t work in hopeful, optimistic stories.
Shigaraki and Dabi have been suffering their whole lives. They are going to suffer more, both of them, so be prepared for that. They want their pain acknowledged; Shigaraki wants to be saved and Dabi wants justice and to matter to his family. Having neither of them get the peace they want is cruel and not remotely hopeful; having Shigaraki end up forgotten and Dabi end up dead again would demonstrate that nothing at all has changed and make the reader question what the hell this story was even about. It’s not a satisfying definition of saving.

Thank you very much for taking the time to reply! Don't worry, you didn't have to reread or rewatch anything, your replies were great nonetheless (btw, I spent a whole night reading the manga and a few hours of the day, so it wasn't impressive at all, it took a lot of time).
I agree with your reading of how and why Light treats her as he does. And I had a lot of fun with the hypothetical situations about how it could have been done you came up with! I really like the first two, where there's deceiving on her part. That could have been both very entertaining and satisfying to read. Yet I loved the third situation, about Takada changing her mind! I liked that it potentially focused more on personal moral reasons than emotional-related-to-Light ones. It also seems easier to fit and more consistent with Ohba's writing I think, and I loved how it played still with the parallelism between Takada and Light. I liked the idea of how after the meltdown both could have ended up taking very different paths. It would rise questions about why that is, about the differences between their personalities and morals, but also whether their ages could have had a say in their ultimate decision, which is something actually both L and Light brought up in the beginning, but now under a different light. I don't know, I just find it would have been a situation very coherent with Ohba's writing and very interesting, and I liked that it had still a bit of not everyone being absolute and blindly charmed by Light. Though maybe Ohba would have written her as not carrying on with the deed because of weakness...
Anyway, I'm talking a lot already, sorry. Again, thank you very much again for taking the time to reply, and for reading that other too long message, there was no need at all. I hope you're feeling better now. And I hope you're enjoying the new things you're reading and watching! I'm half tempted to ask, but that seems overly personal. Revealing what we love is very intimate, after all.
You're welcome 😁 And it's ok to ask about the other media! I gave myself the task of watching hundreds of new movies and reading at least 75 new books this year, since I'm working from home at a boring job and having to be pretty indoorsy most of the year due to the pandemic anyway. So far in the first half of 2021 I've read 36 new books and watched 155 new movies. I'm picking my way through the Beastars manga and Hunter x Hunter manga, as well as reading lots of novels and nonfiction. I developed a big writer crush on Patricia Highsmith back in like February and binged a bunch of her books, so they've been the biggest highlight of the new 2021 reading for me thus far. I've been watching some new shows too, even though I'm normally too lazy for finishing shows... Watched Invincible season 1 with my brother the other week. Also sometimes I'm playing games... Animal Crossing for the Switch took over my life for a bit several months ago, and now I'm having a blast playing the bizarro detective RPG Disco Elysium. I highly recommend that one based on the 10 hours or so I've sunk into it so far, super creative and interesting and strange

Hapuriainen's Animation & Comics & Games of 2020
It is again time for the annual compilation!
Manga:
Attack on Titan
I'm so sad this is so close to end... It's been my main thing for a few years now. Eren definitely didn't take the route I expected but I still find this consistent with his character and a bold and interesting move from the author.
(My notes say I also finished the jr high spin-off manga but it's not worth talking about)
Awards given: Best Side Girl (I still like Gabi, haters gonna hate), Best Boy (ditto Eren)
One Piece, My Hero Academia My interest in OP is still at an all-time low and I'm just waiting for the arc to end. There are so many characters and I have little idea what their deal is, Carrot hasn't been interesting in ages and currently Yamato is the only character I care for. Same for HeroAca; at least the excruciatingly long action scene is finally over.
Undead Unluck New Jump series! I think the main duo have a really good dynamic, but they're pretty much the only thing I care about and I'm very lost with what the plot is actually supposed to be about.
Majin Tantei Nougami Neuro
I like detective stories so here's one from the Assassination Classroom creator! The detective stuff itself could get rather nonsensical and as the story progressed more and more fantasy elements were added, but the titular character was entertaining enough to keep me interested. The viewpoint character was refreshingly (for a Jump series) a girl and her dynamic with Neuro (an ordinary schoolgirl and an arrogant amoral troll demon) was great.
Awards given: Best non-romantic relationship (Neuro & Yako)
Spy x Family
Super fun and the characters are cute!  The main couple has such great chemistry and in general I enjoy following characters who are really competent at their job. Not surprised that this has become hugely popular.
Awards given: Best romance (it is rare to get me to ship anything but the main couple here is just so cute)
Delicious in Dungeon
This manga has amazing character design and the author clearly loves to play around with it, like by drawing each character as each other's races, or making clones of everyone but each clone is a little different so you can guess which is the real one with the characters, and there's so much thought put to the outfits too. And then there's of course all the worldbuilding around how an RPG dungeon and the creatures in it could work, but it's presented simply enough that the story is still easy to follow. I also like the upbeat atmosphere; maybe I could get a bit more emotionally involved if there was more drama, but I still really like this as it is.
Awards given: Best character designs
Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou
Reread one of my favourite manga ever and it's still just as good. I love how the manga still has a positive vibe to it, under it there is the quiet melancholy of a world that is close to ending. And it's wonderful how uninterested the story is answering any of the worldbuilding questions it sets up.
Beastars
This was incredibly interesting in how it presented an animal society where the carnivore-herbivore differences couldn't be just explained away with "the differences don't really exist", and the story looks at this from so many different angles. Pairs really well with Zootopia for a completely different approach. Louis was a really interesting character with how he publicly managed to appear as if he was a good candidate to be the next ambassador for the peace between the animals but was actually very cold and broken inside, and I really liked his breakdown moment. The ending was pretty meh though.
Awards given: Best Side Boy (Louis)
Kannagi
This one has really cute character designs but apart from that it's a pretty generic harem story. Except for the twist that the main girl already had been involved with a boy which caused otaku to shred their manga or whatever. I believe I would have enjoyed this more if it finished back when it went to hiatus since at this point it didn't do much for me.
Witch Hat Atelier
The main girl is the kind of heroic, friendly, plucky goody-two-shoes protagonist I really don't like but apart from that this is a great manga. I love the art, and the way the magic works is really well set up but also easy to understand. Great outfits too!
Anime:
This year I learned that in order to clear stuff from your anime watch list you need to actually watch anime. So unexpectedly I think I watched a lot more different series than usual.
Attack on Titan
It was my plan to watch seasons 1-3 before jumping on board with the last one, and of course I dragged my feet for the entire year and had to marathon the whole thing in autumn. I still prefer the manga, but the anime does have great colours, soundtrack and voice acting and some of the action scenes were amazing. But I really hate what they did to Historia in season 3... The final season has been excellent so far and I can't wait for the big scene in the next episode.
Awards given: Best OP (all the Linked Horizon ones)
Ouran High School Host Club
Haruhi continues to be one of the best girls in the anime and manga industry ever with her confident and no-nonsense attitude, and Tamaki's oblivious and overflowing friendliness makes for a great counterpart to her. And the opening theme is so darn catchy.
Awards given: Best Girl (Haruhi)
Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann Finally managed to watch this. I love the iconic character designs and all the chaotic energy. Kamina for best bro. I've never cared for mecha, the girls were nice but the writing around them sucked and the second half wasn't as strong as the first one, but still a good package overall.
Awards given: Best ED (don't care for the song that much but Simon looks somehow really cool in the second ending)
Haibane Renmei
Another one that had been on the watch list for years. A lovely quiet and contemplative show. Visuals were rather dull though but maybe it's better for a show like this that the characters didn't have bubblegum pink hair.
Digimon Adventure 2020
This started promising but has since lost steam. I really like how different the story is from the original Digimon Adventure, and compared to Precure it's super nice how not every episode has the exact same structure, and the cast has different roles and regularly gets split up instead of shoehorning everyone into every conflict. But on the other hand the characters feel way more samey and flat, and the original "kids want to return to their home from the Digital World" plot was a lot more personal than the current one about global crises and prophecy jargon. And some of the action scenes last way too long.
Awards given: Worst side boy (Agumon and his evolutions, it is of course expected that he'd get a lot of screen time but I'm so over how much he's constantly pushed in your face in the franchise)
Shuumatsu Nani Shitemasu ka? Isogashii Desu ka? Sukutte Moratte Ii Desu ka?
This wasn't afwul but still left me kind of cold. I think the character designs were a problem here, in general I'm used to brightly coloured anime characters but this was trying to be a very serious story about child soldiers who know they're going to die young. But when they were colour-coded and always wore the same clothes (and mostly had pretty generic animu girl personalities) they felt so artificial which made it harder to get into the drama. Nice OP song.
Yashahime
Inuyasha was my first show after really getting into anime so I was super hyped for any kind of new content. So far this has unfortunately been rather dull since I'm not particularly interested in either of Sesshoumaru's daughters, and the way the show treats the absence of the old cast is annoying. Just either show them or make it clear we're not supposed to care about them, now it's just annoying how their disappearance is treated as a mystery but the three heroines know barely anything about their heritage and don't even seem interested in learning either. But I'll watch this to the end for Moroha.
Kaitou Tenshi Twin Angels, Twin Angel Break, Pretear, Happy Seven, Healin' Good Precure
Watched a lot of magical girl stuff this year too, these being shows that play the tropes straight. The Twin Angel seasons had different flaws but were otherwise watchable aside from the awful Twin Angel Break heroine. Pretear had surprisingly nice character writing and I feel I would really have liked this if I saw it at an earlier part of my anime hobby experience but now it doesn't feel so special any more. Healin' Good Precure has been rather dull.
I also watched a bunch of Precure movies, out of which only the Star Twinkle Precure one was actually good, and the Spring Carnival crossover movie was also good in an absurd way, while the rest ranged from awful to somewhat decent.
Awards given: Worst girl (Meguru - Twin Angel Break), Biggest WTF (Happy Seven suddenly going from monster of the week shenaningans to alien mass destruction weapons)
Concrete Revolutio, Myriad Colors Phantom World, Re:Creators
Also some anime where the magical girl was a side character. Concrete Revolutio was an unpleasant mess with nice visuals, Myriad Colors was a pretty boring otaku high school harem thing and the magical girl episode was also rather bland, and Re:Creators had a lot of potential with the "anime characters come to our world" setting but the result was somewhat uneven. Re:Creators had the best magical girl out of these three.
Awards given: Worst non-romantic relationship, Worst side girl (Setsuna from Re:creators, with the main boy) not really an awful character on her own, but the writing around her was pretty bad, let's also give Worst Boy for the said main boy
Nausicaa
I watched the first half of the movie over a decade ago and didn't manage to finish until now. After seeing so many other Ghibli movies this didn't do much for me, but the animation and nature were still beautiful.
Western:
Most Popular Girls in School
The newer seasons didn't reach the heights of the earlier ones but there's still something entertaining about a very raunchy Barbie doll stop motion show. Also pairs well with the Barbie Life in the Dreamhouse for a fun but more child friendly Barbie experience.
Frozen 2
I'm wondering if these really are the only Western piece of media I consumed this year? I certainly didn't go to movies after March. Anyway, like the previous film I had major problems with the plot and characters (I don't think Elsa's story was set up properly, Kristoff's sub-plot feels like an afterthought when he doesn't factor to Anna's sub-plot at all, Olaf is annoying, too much Lore) but ultimately I still had a good time. I like the costume design, the idea for Elsa's arc is fine, the songs are great and there were plenty of good scenes too, and the lullaby was beautiful. I'd say that like the original Frozen this was patched together from perfectly serviceable pieces that didn't quite work combined.
Awards given: Worst romance (not the pairing itself but the way Kristoff x Anna was written)
Games:
Animal Crossing Pocket Camp
Early this year I just decided not to open this app for the daily money-grubbing grind and haven't touched it since. I'm free!
Animal Crossing New Horizons
However the daily grind continues here! It's been way more enjoyable, primarily due to lacking the microtransactions/limited time item angle and also for being so much more customisable. And the nature is so pretty... But I've reached a point where even this has started to feel kind of stale.
Super Mario Odyssey
My first Mario game since Super Mario World so of course I'm blown away by everything. I like how colourful and welcoming the worlds were, Cappy was a surprisingly enjoyable sidekick/mascot and also the game was easy enough and had a simple linear plot so it was far easier to approach than Zelda BotW which is still on hold.
Plans for 2021
Actually play Zelda BotW
Maybe finally Evangelion?
Finally finish the mostly disappointing Digimon Adventure tri

a beastars ramble/mindspill from yours truly
a look into the current state of Legosi and Louis’s relationship in the manga
I’ve been thinking about Legosi and Louis again (what else is new) and how distant and awkward their latest interactions were. I know I made a post about this before, but I reread the chapters of the Riz fight again (aka the peak of their relationship so far in the manga, chapter 114 aside) and it just seemed even more odd that Louis would act so seemingly cold toward Legosi.
A few factors can play into this, of course. Legosi acting distant is immediately understandable and explained: he still feels immense guilt from eating Louis’s leg and is understandably not completely comfortable around him yet. Louis is probably just matching what he’s being given.
It is still odd, though, considering just HOW close they got on New Year’s. Legosi was the first animal Louis truly opened up to
Tumblr media
(i’ll just let this explain itself)
This is an extremely important moment for Louis, and this entire series of chapters fully solidifies their close bond, which had been slowly building throughout the series
Tumblr media
And Louis leaves a clear hook. He wants this relationship to continue. He doesn’t want to go back to how they were. And he allows himself to communicate this to Legosi, even with so many other animals around
So, what happened?
Tumblr media
(in no way blaming Legosi here, of course. Louis had laid a toxic foundation for them and Legosi is still a bit hesitant, especially cuz the status of their relationship changed so quickly)
This one decision, Legosi dropping out of school, and then his meat hunger and self imposed isolation from herbivores damaged his connection with Louis.
Tumblr media
(from 114. I don’t know much about the accuracy of translation or if i’m looking too deeply into a certain word, but “scared” is a pretty strong emotion. I just imagine how much this must have impacted Louis, especially after vocalizing his desire to see him again at school, which never happened. The accusatory tone of his second statement shows the bitterness he must feel, as well)
Tumblr media
(from 105, further showing Louis’s frustration toward Legosi for essentially leaving him out to dry with no warning)
Going back to chapter 114, where Louis acts on a hunch and goes out of his way to buy lunch for Legosi and even think of a joke to break the ice after reading the story about the wolf who dismantled the drug cartel, it’s clear that he wants to mend their relationship, and it seems like he does
But then they sort of just drift apart again. Legosi, understandably, doesn’t have much free time, and Louis starts university so it’s the same for him, no doubt. We also see Louis relapsing into old thinking patterns, or actively trying to undo the development he had achieved
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
He still has those feelings, of course (him worrying a lot about Legosi really gets me oh my heart) but the strict rules of society programmed into his head causes a relapse. This seems to be a common theme in the manga in general: falling back into unhealthy patterns and ways of thinking.
Of course as we see, Louis’s night with his fiance brings it to the forefront of his mind again: he can’t ignore the carnivore friends in his life, and this brings him to help the Shishigumi with their current plight
And now, what this post was pretty much made for: The reason for Legosi and Louis’s distance in the latest chapters. Everything i’ve laid out above contributes to it, I believe (at least from Louis’s side, since Legosi’s reasoning is pretty obvious, as stated above). Another factor to consider is Louis’s history with the Shishigumi, and Legosi being sort of a third wheel in this context. I don’t have any doubt that if Louis and Legosi were alone we’d get another situation like chapter 114. Louis has allowed a side of himself to be seen by Legosi that he can’t bring out around others.
That being said, we do see Louis warming up a bit as those chapters progressed, and the sheer and utter disappointment he feels when he’s more or less rejected by his carnivore friends and forced to go away
I think what Legosi and Louis need to truly mend their friendship and bring it to the status they reached on New Year’s, is to spend some time alone together airing a lot of shit out and being open with each other, which is something they’re both learning to do. I just hope we get to see it
So yeah. Just something I thought about for a while that I had to get down in words. I don’t doubt Itagaki’s character writing, but it has seemed that lately she’s been skipping out on development between these two, especially after building up to it and emphasizing it for so long. This is just my way of making heads and tails of the whole situation, and hoping that she isn’t just going to forget about them, since this is the longest the manga has gone where they have not developed at all. But being a creative person myself, I don’t think this is something she would just overlook. Everything I typed here was the intention of the author, i believe (or maybe i just hope)

thisisthepartwhereyou replied to your post: “thisisthepartwhereyou replied to your post: “this fucking manga just...”:
More like succumbing to a fairly typical manga/anime-trope, where characters learn new techniques and go through transformations. While it is not a literal transformation here, more like a psychological illustration, it does feel like it's stretching ones suspension of disbelief a bit, considering that most of Beastars has a very grounded tone. Though it is not completely random, as there has been a few hints earlier of chimeras existing and being perceived.
i agree that characters need to go through a transformation, and that's something always present in every story BUT the way Paru does it doesn't convince me. I can't buy it, sorry. Since the beginning of the manga I've noticed her storystelling is kinda lacking but she's great at characterization which makes up for it. I get a feeling that she wants to include magical realism in her story (although idk whether to call it realism in this case) but at the end she goes for surreal or dark, so it ends up being just bizarre or cringey (the rabbit face omg) well, at least that's the impression i get. i have really bad memory so i'll have to reread some parts and look for some foreshadowing but even if there is, i dont think it's well executed

I was tagged in my first tag game on this blog by @chromehoplite. Thank you so much. This was fun.
Top 3 ships: me x sebastian I’m not a ship person, so this took a while to figure out, haha. This isn’t in any order either. Sun Jing x Qiu Tong (Tamen de Gushi), Legosi x Haru (Beastars), and... me x sebastian again Sebastian x Agni (Kuro)
Lipstick or chapstick: I wear neither, but probably chapstick.
Last Song: The Moss by Cosmo Sheldrake. I’m trying to make an inspo playlist for my Peter Pan au, and 90% of it probably consists of this guy. You should check him out if you enjoy whimsical, folktale-like vibes in your music~
Last Movie: The Mule. I watched this with my folks last time I visited my family. Clint Eastwood did a good job in this, and apparently it’s based on a true story, but it’s not something I’d watch again in my free time;;
Reading: Introduction to Social Work (An Advocacy-Based Profession) and every learning theory centered scholarly article under the sun i’m so bored please help me. A Writer’s Guide to Fairies, Witches, and Vampires From Fairy Tales and Lore by Ty Hulse, a local author in my city. I went to a fairy tale panel he ran and got a signed book from him. It’s not a novel. More of an informative writing on fantastical creatures in various cultures and their personalities, with cited sources, and how to use that lore to create your very own. It’s an interesting read so far. I’ve always been a fan of fairy tales and folklore, and spent my free electives studying them, so this is more of a personal interest piece for me. I’m also rereading Rust & Stardust because I loved chapter 8 sm
3 random things to make me happy: 1) Doodling. I’m not a very good artist, but I sometimes spend hours at a time just drawing the same thing over and over, exploring shapes and styles. I end up not liking most of the things that I come up with when I get tired, but the process is what makes me happy. Just sitting down, listening to music and going ape on a page with no direction. Just vibes. I’m really happy that people on here like my doodles too. It’s been such a positive experience posting here. <3 2) Going to bed knowing that I won’t be woken up by an alarm in the morning. 3) Interacting with people I vibe with, or even just seeing them around, either online or in person.
I don’t know very many people on here. Am just baby. I’ll tag people I enjoy talking to, or seeing on my dash in general though @impciel @teasmudge @angelic-affliction

Beastars community: Sexual Tension
Alright here’s a topic that I’ve been wanting to ask. Every now and then there’s always a comment from someone in the Beastars community, or hell even in some other fandoms, talking about “sexual tension” between two sets of characters. Frankly I don’t see or feel this “sexual tension.” I’m always left confused and thinking they’re fucking crazy. I look back and reread the manga and I still don’t see it. Is this another lgtbq thing and I’m just too straight to see it or is it something else? And sorry if this offended anyone. Wasn’t attending to. It’s just every time it comes up in the Beastars community it racks my brain a little.
