It’s the hypocrisy for me because if people are gonna complain about the show whitewashing Rhaenyra and Daemon (tbh I wouldn’t be so sure about Daemon since the show had him kill his first wife which may not have happened in the book and erased some of his more redeeming qualities like his relationship with Laena but w/e) then maybe they shouldn’t have been showering so much praise at the writers for doing the absolute mother of all character rehabilitations on Alicent instead keeping her as a one-dimensional evil stepmother who makes snide remarks about her teen stepdaughter possibly being groomed. Because that characterization for Alicent would’ve been far more ~accurate~ to the source material but I don’t believe that’s actually what y’all care about.

Then there’s all the call outs about the show’s handling of the Velaryons as black and how insensible it has come off as, which don’t get me wrong, is completely true but I didn’t see y’all concerned when the show took the canonical close relationship with romantic undertones that Laena (now played by a black woman) had with Rhaenyra and gave it instead to Alicent. On the contrary y’all were praising the show to the moon and back and gushing about the “lesbian divorce drama” so again, not so concerned about the source material or black characters being mistreated and sidelined, are we?

And just to be clear, the show could have turned Daemon and Rhaenyra into mustache-twirling villains with no redeeming or sympathetic qualities whatsoever and Alicent and Aegon could be innocent angels who have never done anything wrong in their lives and guess what? The throne would still be Rhaenyra’s by rights. Yes, the Dance of the Dragons is a horrible conflict caused by a bunch of morally reprehensible nobles veering for power and willing to do despicable things in order to achieve it, and yet at the heart of the matter remains the fact that society is sexist and simply Won’t Let A Woman Rule. Rhaenyra was the heir and was usurped by Aegon because of misogyny, everything that happened afterwards doesn’t negate that simple truth.

But anyways, none of that matters because f&b is an unreliable source and we can’t trust anything it says ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ so yes Rhaenyra is in every single way better than her younger half-brother, who’s a pathetic little wet-rag r*pist, and the green fraction is gonna support that pathetic little wet-rag r*pist because they hate women and children born outside the sanctity of marriage that much. Galaxy brain level take on the writers’ part. Truly immaculate lmfao.

AHHHHH we got Promo for the new season today so I wanted so share my thoughts and opinions 🫶🏼❤️‍🔥

First off… THE OUTFITS, OMG ACTUALLY GORGEOUS. They’ve obviously upped the quality this season and I am FOREVER grateful. Emma D’arcy and Olivia Cooke look absolutely STUNNING.

I really enjoy how they went with a very Daenerys season eight looking outfit for Rhaenyra. It’s probably a reference to her gradual decline into cruelty (ugh hate how this happened to Dany in season eight but irrelevant). Love how there giving Rhaenyra good old Targ colours!!! GORGEOUS.

Don’t even get me started on Alicent, Olivia Cooke is one of the most gorgeous woman I have ever seen. The outfit is so flattering, the fabric is gorgeous SHE IS GORGEOUS. The detailing on this dress is actually so stunning. Green and auburn/red hair is actually like perfect Olivia.

I’m really liking the expression on these two ladies as well. In the bigger poster that this promo is apart of, you can see that it’s Alicent kind of looking at Rhaenyra. I feel like this is meant to represent Alicents inner turmoil with her decision. I think ultimately she kind of regrets, I’ve read some 🚨leaks that say that Aegon stops listening to her, and I think that ultimately makes her realise maybe all of this wasn’t worth it🚨 while I do think it’s a look of regret, I mostly think it’s a look a grief. B&C causes Alicents daughter to go into horrible grief and also leads to the death of her grandson. Very interesting! Cant wait to see what Olivia Cooke has in store this season.

For Rhaenyra I think it’s a look of determination. She completely looks past Alicent and it looks as if she’s looking at the iron throne. I’m so happy that this season there giving Rhaenyra the same cunningness and agency she had in the book. I kind of hated how in the show you didn’t really feel the desire she had for the throne. But THIS SEASON! I have so much faith.

There both so gorgeous as well!! I think these are my favourite promo images.

Hmmmm I wonder if this promo could foreshadowing to any possible events in the future….hmmm…..hmmm…..

Anyways, both of these promos are really cool. I really like how they both have there swords out (ofc Aemond sword isn’t as cool as Darksister…), there both in front of there banners ready to fight for there team!

I’ll be honest I don’t really have much to say about these promo’s itself other than it’s obviously setting the kind of rivalry these two have (sort of.)

Although for these characters I’m really curious on where there characters are headed. I think at the end of season one we saw that Aemond kind of regretted his decision in killing Luke (whether that’s cuz he didn’t wanna actually kill him or didn’t wanna deal with the consequence) I’m really interested in how he will handle it. I don’t think he’s in Kingslanding when Jaehaerys dies but I wonder how he will handle the news. ‘Son for a son, an eye for an eye’.

Daemon I’ll be honest I can kind of assume will probably stay the same, I feel like the type of character he is was set up nicely ect ect. I’m curious with how him and Rhaenyra’s relationship will be. Obviously it’s a bit rocky, with him choking her, and also him organising B&C against her wishes, I’m very curious! Matt Smith will be phenomenal.

Aegon I hate you but you ate this ONEEEEE little thing. His promo ate so bad guys I’m sorry like… who let him serve that much?? Also RHAENYS IS FREE FROM THE CONE HEAD! THANK GOD! I PRAYED FOR TIMES LIKE THIS.

Overall Aegons promo is probably the most ‘symbolic’, in the corner you can see one of the swords going through a green banner, probably to symbolise his usurpation and how the throne isn’t ‘his’. I also find it really interesting how he’s holding his crown and not wearing it, whereas Rhaenyra is wearing hers. I think it’s to show how the iron throne is something that Rhaenyra WANTS it’s something that was promised to her for most of her life Vs Aegon who was kind of forced upon the role.

Also interesting that Cristons hair is long and in BTS pics we see that he has short hair, I wonder if he cuts it during the season. I also like how he’s next to Aegon, “kingmaker” also a sign to how he becomes Aegons hand of the king.

I dont think theres anything to say about Rhaeny’s and Corlys other than that RHAENYS SLAYS!! Thats my queen FR.

Also, I want to point out at Aegons window we can see Vhager (you can tell by the sag, lol.) and at Rhaenys we can assume thats Meleys… Rooks rest anyone?💔

ALL the promos where so amazing, good job to everyone who worked on them and I will BE DISCUSSING THE TRAILER TMRW.

Who's your favorite character? What draws you to them?

My initial response is Aemond Targaryen (surprise, surprise). The book and show portrayal have some similarities, but I really loved how Leo Ashton and Ewan Mitchell’s characterization. There was something relating to how Leo carried himself, Aemond just weary but ready to defend Aegon, how he was ridiculed. You have this sense of relief when he finally claims Vhagar that you forget the implications until that group of cunt ass kids rallied against him. Then you see that want for revenge, how it shapes and molds him into this man that is just...

Sigh. 💜

Anyway, after him it would Ser Criston Cole, as this man is so damn petty with his hatred it halted his aging and I’m here for it.

What's your favorite episode of the season?

I loved the despair of episode 8, where we finally got to see the key players for what was to come. The build up, the tension that lead to this brief moment of serenity and then... the dinner scene, where it just went downhill so fucking fast.

What is your favorite line from the season?

I have two. The first belongs to Daemon: “You cannot live your life in fear, or you will forsake the best parts of it.”

And second is to Jerrel Bracken, and it makes me giggle: “The princess has a dragon, you dumb cunt.”

Which actor's portrayal is your favorite?

Of course the obvious answer is Ewan Mitchell. I binged everything he has been in and really enjoy that even though he had similar mannerisms used in each roll, he seems to adjust to fit whatever character he is playing and I think it’s fucking brilliant.

Matt Smith plays a cunt like no other. As much as Daemon makes my skin crawl, I do enjoy watching him.

Olivia Cooke. 💜 Watching Alicent’s transition from the tepid daddy’s girl to girlboss was amazing. She believed in her convictions and squared off to Otto, to her husband, and we saw glimpses of how she played the Game of Thrones, and I really loved it.

Which character would you most want to be stuck on a deserted island with?

I mean...

But for real, probably Ser Criston as he seems low key a more practical option, as I could trust him to be able to scrounge for food, kill whatever wild hog might attack, things like that.

Name a minor character you want to know more about!

I would love more insight on Arryk and Erryk OR, since they kept him alive, if Ser Harrold Westerling came back in a blaze of glory, that’d be nifty.

Who's character arc are you most interested to see continued, for better or worse?

May the gods pity me, but Aemond. I am curious their interpretation of his story and am super excited to see it unfold.

Who's your most anticipated new character of Season 2?

Cregan Stark, but this is mostly because of my Mushroom theory of him, but I already know HBO is a bunch of cowards and would never. And Nettles 💜 I really hope they show how she gets her dragon.

Which is your favorite dragons of the ones we saw?

Vhagar.

I hate that we missed out on some Fire & Blood bonding between Aemond and this she-dragon, but I really loved how they showed the sentient side when she was bonded to Laena. It was beautiful and heartbreaking 💜

What's your favorite relationship from this season? (romantic, platonic, antagonistic- whichever!)

I loved Rhaenyra and Harwin Strong. I really loved the snippets of him knitted throughout, his admiration for Rhaenyra just as she was. There was also so much in the scene after she gave birth, how he was quick to help in any he could, just to be able to touch her, to be there for her. And when he held Joffrey?

Like, goddamn, I love this man so much 😭

I’m so personally conflicted about Alysmond like both of them are interesting characters in their own right but the power imbalance and age difference makes me so uncomfortable I wont ever be able to root for them as a couple. And yeah it’s not like GRRM (or maybe HOTD? seeing Aemond’s current portrayal in the show) wants us to like them together (I don’t think GRRM ever cared about ships anyway cuz he’s not that kind of writer lol) but still. And as someone who saw their close friend in a relationship with someone 15 years older than them, Alysmond makes me kind of sick. HOWEVER if they make Alys the witch of Harrenhal that she’s rumored to be? I’m all for an “evil” sorceress (maybe really bewitching him) instead of a grown ass woman warming a boy’s bed (even tho she was told to be his ear prize 😬).

Sorry for these ramblings but that what I love about GRRM’s writing! Basically all of his characters are complex individuals (and all of F&B is written by people who don’t really know the truth which makes this more complicated), so I just hope HOTD writers don’t screw anything up more than they already did in S1 🤞🏻

im going to answer this is good faith you didn't realize this probably was not the ask to send someone whose blog makes it clear I am an alysmond enjoyer. in the future if you want to talk about why you don't like alysmond please make your own post. not trying to be rude but I don't want to open Tumblr and read an ask about someone not liking a dynamic I enjoy.

but I will clarify a few things.

on one hand, I do not think any pairing in hotd (or GRRM's works) is meant to be romantic, especially in hotd. alysmond is not the first unhealthy dynamic nor is it the last in the book and show. these characters are all morally grey and complex, which makes it very interesting character wise and with ships.

fire and blood is written as a history book and not even as a credible source so honestly, I like a lot of the changes they've made so far. they didn't make aemond a psychopath in the show, giving him complexities and more depth, which I loved. I hope they do the same for alys. point is, we don't know how alysmond will look dynamic wise but if s1 is anything to go off of I think we will get a more complex and interesting dynamic.

the age thing is murky because Aemond is 19 when the war starts and 20 when he dies in fire and blood, but in the show Ewan Mitchell is about 25 and no one can say how old he is. I won't bother arguing that because Ewan looks a lot older than the 19 years Aemond is meant to be in ep10. Gayle is 33 I believe, so the age difference between them will look a lot smaller than it is in the book. but like the show different changed is Alicent and Rhaenyra's ages and dynamics, I would not be upset if they did change this dynamic of Alys and Aemond a little.

like other people who enjoy alysmond, I like this ship not for super romantic purposes (sure, I enjoy the fanart and cannot wait to see them on screen), but because they are just interesting characters. it is the same reason I find helaegon intriguing, but don't ship them romantically. I think looking for romantic pairings without fault, canon or otherwise, in hotd will lead to conflicts. these are not real people, they are fictional characters who were not written to be moral characters without fault.

One of the things I love about your KBF series is the usage of different POVs, which creates a full and voluminous picture of this universe. Sansa and Aemond, Rhaenyra and Rhaenys, Otto and Alycent, Symon, Alfred, Sara... I'm curious, do you have some faves, POVs you enjoy writing the most? And do you have some other characters, who haven't shown their thoughts and views yet, but you'd like to spotlight them? Both in a side story (like your possible Daemon story) or in the main one.

Thank you so much, I’m happy you enjoy the POVs I’ve chosen!

Also, writing with POVs means you can weave the story better but it also means you have the choose the different voices and morals and ideals and keep it consistent.

Which is why some characters are more difficult than others.

I love writing by Sansa’ POV because it all feels very linear, because she always remains true to herself even when she poses as somebody else (and this is true for Alayne Stone POV in canon too, imo). Usually she is my fav POV to write from (though it’s a tie with Jon and Young Griff in my other stories) in the KBF series it’s a tie between Sansa and Sara (followed closely by Alicent and Otto).

I adore writing Aemond and Symon too, they’re close seconds.

Alfred is a bit like Selmy or Davos imo, so I like it because it’s interesting but a bit difficult for me to write.

I find Rhaenyra a tad more than difficult to write because I wanna show all facets of her — a bit like canon Daenerys is very difficult for me to write because one has to take in account both the light and the darkness and the descent into darkness in a plausible way that feels justified to the character with it sounding reasonable because they don’t see the outside perspective — but I am pretty satisfied with how she is turning out both in her POVs and in other’s.

I think Daemon will become a sidestory POV character only, at least for the first installment of the series. Probably once the POV characters of the women around him are well settled I’ll drop him in like a bomb — kind of like the Jaime POV.

POVs I’d like to write…mmm 🤔 since the moment — back when I was writing chapter two of KBF — I realized I wanted to add Symon I have been excitedly waiting for his POV, another two I’m waiting for are Kermit Tully and Daeron, and in the next installment are the dragonseed and Baela as well as Joffrey.

But the true one I’ve been really building up for, is Mysaria. She’s just very interesting to write, her mind is an organised jumble with razor sharp edges. I adore it.

Also… await for Lucerys’ POV too.

What is your opinion on show Aemond? In books he was basically psychopath, in show not yet, but I wonder what do you think of him besides the things you said before like he is arrogant. Btw, you are probably the only person who sees his arrogance and inability to rule (despite having Vhagar, being great swordsman and studying history and philosophy) because I swear to God, every Aemond stan views him as perfect and not arrogant at all and perfect material for a king. And you know what is the funniest thing? That they only acknowledge his traumas when they are comparing him to Daemon, you know, Daemon is the bad guy from episode 1, groomer and many other things but Aemond is hurt and insecure and disabled, but when confronted, they all view him as perfect. You know, just because he has traumas means he is perfect. But it never crossed their minds that any sort of trauma affects the process of thinking, self confidence, perception of people around us and does it in not positive way. And no, just because Aemond is traumatized doesn't mean he will be good father and husband because how in madieval world would he have any opportunity to even acknowledge that he has something called trauma and then starting to work on it, slowly realising how this worked and made him the person he is now?

It's 2022 and people are talking a lot about mental health which is great, but seeing how many people not even understand how Aemond's traumatic past shaped him and thinking it won't have negative effect is really sad.

And maybe the reason you got this terrible anon message because his stans really have no clue how his past will affect him and people close to him. They focus on how a good and dutiful son he is, but in fact he is parentified child. I also am one and believe me it could be great for strangers, me caring about my mother, but they don't know how hard it was in childhood when I was the one to take care of her where it should have been other way around. And my relationship with her is not a testimony of any kind of strong bond, but the fact I was burdened by her problems and needed to find solutions to them, because she couldn't. And in episode 9 when Alicent says If anything has happened and her panicked expression, it reminded me of my mother and everytime she relied on me.

You are basically the only person I saw admitting that he is a piece of work. Others believe that after all he has been through he would be perfect father, husband and king. No one sees how his past shaped him in bad way. Because it's like knife that cuts on both sides, sure, after losing an eye he became full of determination, dutiful, but also full of anger and having many repressed feelings. And this will affect all his relationships, but his stans doesn't see him as flawed character, they point out Daemon wrongdoings and use it to put Aemond on pedestal. And once saw one of them saying Aemond will get rid of his traumas once Viserys and Luke died. So thank you for portraying him in realistic way, I know it was request to write his wife being killed over a lie, but you captured his essence in such amazing way.

Well I appreciate that you like my different interpretations of Aemond. To be fair/honest, the way I write him in fmo or even in that request is not how I personally would want him written in the show. I don’t enjoy seeing women, regardless of the context or nature, being treated so poorly. There are times where it makes me sad when writing. But I’m also an admittedly sensitive person lol. Those anons I got, while complete weirdos who need help, I see as outliers compared to a lot of people who enjoy hotd. It’s just when you are in a large fandom, the wronged opinions tend to be the loudest. I do a lot of people misinterpret characters but they also have the good sense to not harass people.

I think that all the layers that make up show Aemond is why he is extremely compelling. He can be messy or arrogant, and probably a bad king/Prince regent. But he can also be a young man who had to deal with a losing his eye, a neglectful father, a mother who takes on a lot and probably projects a lot onto him bc he is so dutiful and kind to her, and having unique sibling relationships. And that does not even mention the possible piety or the strained relationship with intimacy he may have. I do think a lot of writers on here know and understand show Aemond but maybe choose to paint a prettier picture bc why not. Like I don’t plan on writing Aemond as a terrible father or husband in everything I do. I have some stuff in the works that is the opposite actually. He can be a lot thinks at once bc most people are. You just have to pick your threshold of what you can tolerate, irl and when you engage with media.

As for how I feel about show Aemond. I like him. I wouldn’t take the time to write about him if I didn’t. There are certain changes that I think the show did well, and I would argue and say his characterization is one of them. It also doesn’t hurt that ewan plays him extremely well. Older aemond could have fell flat if they did not have someone as talented playing him. So much of that charisma is not the text, it’s ewan acting his ass off. I’d say that’s the case for all the Hightower/targ kids. Phia, Tom, and ewan did the best with what they got, especially Tom and phia

House of the Dragon tag game!

Who’s your favourite character? What draws to them?

Honestly? All the greens lol. Even Otto, who’s a genuine dick to his daughter, is a great character. Like, my man could not care any less when Rhaenyra threw her “I’m the queen!” tantrum, he was so real for that. Also, Criston “perhaps my prince remembers when I knocked him off his horse?” Cole is iconic for that alone. However, I definitely love Alicent, Helaena, Aegon and Daeron much more than the others.

Alicent is the reason I started to side with the greens. Seeing this fifteen years old girl put through hell and back, having to deal with four children basically on her own… her strength is amazing. The green dress scene is definitely in the top ten best entrances ever. And the moment she snaps in Driftmark? Iconic, legendary. She reminds me so much of Sansa, my all-time favourite character. The way she is used and abused but is never given the opportunity to be free… She’s Sansa if Sansa hadn’t been able to escape her abusers.

Aegon, of course, the first son who isn’t good enough. The boy who probably saw his mother spiral into paranoia, who feels like he is worthless since he is the only first-born son being denied his father’s throne. It’s heartbreaking. TGC gives layers upon layers of complexity, the way he seems constantly on the verge of breaking down. And, of course, his bond with Sunfyre, the strongest bond in the history of house Targaryen between the unbroken king and the most beautiful and ferocious dragon in History.

Helaena, obviously. My beautiful, tragically kind Helaena. Helaena, who loves insects more than people but still claimed Dreamfyre the Mother of Dragons. Helaena, who advocated for peace and lost her sons because of it. Helaena, who isn’t a doormat like the show wants us to think, but a strong woman who had no fear of her husband and had a good relationship with him. Helaena, who was crowned next with Aegon. I just love everything about her. Helaena was loved by everyone, and I hate that they stole my beloved princess from us.

I’m also in love with Daeron and his famous “you will receive the same terms you gave my nephew Maelor”. Also, the way he saved everyone in the Reach and became the biggest threat to Rhaenyra’s rule. Rhaenyra’s advisors were literally begging her to make peace with Daeron because of how unstoppable he was. He’s the moment, the legend, the best younger brother in history, I would kill for him.

What is your favourite episode of the season?

Driftmark. It really shows how irreversible Viserys’ stupidity is, and it has among my favourite lines and moments (Aemond claiming Vhagar, for example). I liked The Lord of the Tides too, because it had TGC and I love him more than my life, lmao.

What is your favourite line from the season?

I have three!!!

“The beacon on the Hightower, do you know what colour it glows when Oldtown calls its banners to war?” / “Green.”

“Do keep trying, Ser Laenor. Sooner or later, you may get one who looks like you.”

“I? What have I done but what was expected of me? Forever upholding the kingdom, the family, the law? Where is your duty? Where is sacrifice? It’s trampled under your pretty foot! And now you take my son’s eye and even to that you feel entitled!”

Which actor’s portrayal is your favourite?

Oof. Honestly, everyone. I find Matt Smith a bit weaker than others (especially Paddy Constantine or Olivia Cooke), but they’re all amazing. I think that my favourites are Olivia Cooke, Emily Carey (both as adult and young Alicent) and Tom Glynn-Carney (as adult Aegon), but I think Phia Saban will amaze me next season. Paddy Constantine also did an amazing job, but my heart goes with the three mentioned before.

Which character would you most want to be stuck on a deserted island with?

Helaena because she knows what insect and plant we can eat, or Corlys cuz he probably can make a raft with anything. If the dragon riders have their dragons/can call them, then Helaena! I’d love to ride on Dreamfyre.

Whose character arc are you most interested to see continued, for better or worse?

AEGON, without a doubt. He’s the best character of the Dance, and TGC has already shown he’s one of the best actors of this show. Honestly, the writers should just let him decide what Aegon will do because he clearly understands his character better than them (RIGHT SARA HESS?)

Name a minor character you want to know more about!

Rhea Royce my beloved. She died too young, I wanted to know everything about her. How she felt about being married to Daemon, if she used to be hopeful as a young girl when she was told she would marry a dragon riding prince and how quickly it turned into a nightmare.

Who’s your most anticipated new character of season 2?

DAERON without a doubt! I can’t wait to see him.

Of Cut Stems, Of Blossoms Ablaze by lullaeby. It’s a genderswap AU of the green kids featuring Helaegon and currently pre-Dance of the Dragons. It’s amazing, and I couldn’t sing enough praises!!

The Targaryen Doe by Alicent_Apologist. Camyla Baratheon marries Aemond Targaryen before the dance begins, and it changes a lot of things. It’s amazing, Camyla is a great OC who fits perfectly into the universe and her relationship with Aemond is perfect.

The Reds and the Blues by Bobert_Hightower. Not exactly team green per-say, but definitely one of my favourite fics. Laena Velaryon marries Viserys instead of Alicent, Rhaenyra marries Jason Lannister and Alicent marries Laenor. All in all, it’s a completely different story but the Dance is going to happen no matter what. I heavily recommend it; it explores the different political factions of ASOIAF perfectly. I mean, it features a Hightower-Velaryon alliance! Also, the children are adorable and deserve the world.
