anyway, i feel like oomfs care about my opinion, so ill outline what i personally find to be the appeal of c0e is and if anyone wants to ask about it by any means is welcome to investigate such interest to their heart's content
it's probably a disorganized and unappealing list, because im not good at shopping things i like around, im not good at talking about what i like, but please believe in me. there's a fan translation on youtube, tbh the tone of it is a little flat (no its really flat), but it gets the job done for the most part. for untranslated parts? well.. idk... there are summaries im willing to point you to though
the cast is mostly adult and above 25. i feel like this isn't really an appeal point, or rather i feel like saying this is the same level of low tier bait as "theres rep!!!" but you know. i actually did enjoy this aspect enough to suggest it
the protagonist is kind of a sardonic hero, he is very curt and blunt. i like it a lot. but he's a good guy too.
for those who like SCP, there is an SCP-like element to the first quarter of the game i'm sure would tickle your fancy. it persists throughout, but most of the funny creatures are in the first quarter
the portrayal of the cult that the story is centered on and how its victims act is something i enjoyed very much. despite the horrific things that occurred, i feel for all of them*. from the point of view of outsiders. from the point of view of people who were there from the start. from the point of view of those who were born into it. from the point of view of newcomers. it is a master class in the subject matter imo.
my favorite character is an anime girl (26 year old man). he is very good and very cute and there's no way they let him suffer so much i might actually die
the thoroughline of generational trauma only gets deeper as you go down the story.
i like the body horror in it a lot.
there's a lot of violence. i like it.
there is a light element of cannibalism but it is not something that the story brings attention to. you're welcome to hallucinate about it with me though

I think characterizing Lancelot as a shameless womanizer seeking out married women on purpose is broke af to my understanding of him. but I m not a hardliner oh h he’s too loyal for that either bc i do find the idea funny that it’s not actually the strict principle he pretends it is so long as you hack into whatever brain chemistry it is that compels him to love in the most batshit way imaginable. And bc I’m an asshole who don’t really like the idea of “one fated true love” as a concept especially in a series like fate where this is like, never the point, that romantic love will absolve whatever’s wrong w you, which is kind of the key issue that makes him and guinevere compelling but also unhealthy. They are so toxic and codependent they struggle to even breathe without each other. Fucking literally. They try to suffocate themselves over it. And I think bc of that I have no problem w her not being here so for once he doesn’t orient his entire being around her he has to learn to become a functional person without her, he and guinevere deserve to rebel against the narrative a bit bc he simply wasn’t allowed before, he often acts like the narrative is holding a gun to his head forcing him to love her and took for granted he couldn’t have anything other than her. So the hardline I guess “shippers” of them to the point where they can’t chill on seeing thempaired w anyone else or don’t unders why he needs to grow as a person without her first also annoy me. But just wish people would acknowledge he’s not the guy a lot of people assume he is. He gets attention from women really easily bc he’s respectful of them to a fault but at least in his source material I’ve read was only really interested in guinevere. but he loves having random bromance with random old guys in the midst of whatever shitshow he’s involved in so like sure maybe he’d fuck a woman other than the queen if he could also like steal your dad or have old man yaoi about it bc it feels like romance is so much more about getting caught up in a Situation for him more than it is about merely presenting him with a pretty woman. and that’s what I actually like about him. Like. Read any story involving him especially knight of the cart. He’s so fucking pretentious about how disinterested he is in romancing hot women who aren’t Her (longingly gazes off into the vast expanse of space) he likes women platonically but he is actually really avoidant of them in an interpersonal level while he’s Allowed to be affectionate with men and so he is less restrained in his affections towards them to the point where the modern perspective is often inclined to be like yeah sorry tails this looks gay to the audience (which I like to fully lean into. He’s a bi icon tbh) maybe some of the later iterations of him do away with him being kind of prudish about women I admit I have not read every single iteration of Arthurian mythos but I do remember reading urobuchi saying he doesn’t take that perspective of him so it’s still annoying to me how much it’s the Go To gag while fgo also simultaneously mostly portrays him correct to my understanding of him as just. A guy who is always in a Situation

What's Lawlight tropes do you dislike?
I hate hate hate the trope that's very common in older fics of leaning heavily into old-school fannish seme/uke dynamics that makes one of them out to be a grown-ass man and one of them effectively a child. I've seen this go both ways depending on the author's preference in terms of who tops. This is not to say that I don't like stuff that explores their difference in age or stuff in which they both exclusively prefer one sexual role rather than switching -- I think that's very fine and normal and often very juicy for fic purposes. It's just this specific form of 00s yaoi-hands exaggeration that to me honestly verges on homophobic and makes me nuts.
In a similar vein I really hate like, Colleen Hoover-esque stuff where one of them is abusive toward the other and the other is like. I Can Fix Him. Like shut the fuck up. I'm down for toxicity, I'm down for fucked-up shit, I'm down for fic that explores relational abuse in an interesting and informed manner, I'm down for all of these things ending on sad and shitty notes and becoming cyclical/not getting any better -- I'm even down for "I can fix him" shit in a way that makes it clear whichever character is thinking that is delusional and accepting treatment they shouldn't accept. I am not down for boring-ass "this dude treats me like shit but I'm going to magically sex him into just being kind of a huge dick to me rather than somebody who should be on a list" shit.
I'm trying to think of other things. I'm strongly not a fan of fics where Light forgets he's Kira permanently and then is never informed of the fact that he was and never again demonstrates any of the little cruelties present in his canon personality so he can be L's safe declawed waifu. He has to be a little bit evil and unhinged even if he isn't Kira or it isn't any fun. Similarly, I dislike fluffy domestic fic that's completely flat in this regard where L and Light are both just normal happy dudes with zero personality flaws and only the quirks the author thinks are cute and harmless. They cannot be normal!!! They don't have to be the world's greatest detective and the world's most prolific serial killer but they CANNOT be just 100% completely normal dudes or I'm checking out.
I also don't like stuff where they become like, Near and Mello's adoptive parents. I don't like kidfic much for them at all tbh but especially in this form. Near and Mello don't need adopted parents and L and Light do not want to adopt their asses (particularly since Light is only like 5 years older than them). I'm like stop trying to force this group of insane men into a nuclear family unit.
That's everything off the top of my head but I'm sure there are plenty of others. I can be very picky when it comes to fic. Thankfully I have many trusted genius mutuals on here who have written and recommended excellent stuff.

no one asked but here are some of my thoughts on the one piece live action show
the things I didn't like:
Nojiko not knowing about Nami's scheme and plan. I get that it was probably a way to raise the odds and emphasize Nami's loneliness, but to me it cheapened their relationship and took away one of the most touching moments in the manga, when the reason for Nojiko's tattoos is revealed.
humorless, stoic, sexy man Zoro. of all the characters it was the one adaptation that didn't work for me, and Zoro is one of my favorites so it was a bit frustrating. the actor gives a good performance, but whereas the rest of the crew is a perfect translation of their manga selves to the screen, Zoro feels like a fundamentally different character. which is unfortunately because the mix of goofiness and badassery is what makes Zoro so engaging. here's hoping that he's allowed to emote more in season two.
in a similar vein as the previous point, I wasn't a fan of all the "Zoro and Nami exhasperated over Luffy" scenes. imo making Zoro so mature changed the dynamic of the crew and made his relationship with Luffy ring a bit hollow, even when the show wanted me to be emotionally invested in their bond.
Mihawk's introduction makes him come across as way less of threat than in the manga. I get cutting Krieg because they had less time and ultimately I don't think it was a massive loss, but having Gin show up destroyed and hyping Mihawk up is sooo much more effective than just showing him in the middle of a battle.
Nami was also a bit too serious for my taste, but I'll chalk that up to East Blue being when she's still not fully comfortable with the crew yet.
this is the most nitpicky annoying thing but. Arlong was too small. like obviously realistically speaking the actor is jacked but he does not give off the same threatening air that he does in the manga when he's towering over everyone.
the things I liked (most of it!):
from a plot perspective I think they were very smart and strategic about what to cut, they managed to trim everything to make it fit in eight hours and it worked. having Koby and Helmeppo throughout the season was a great way to keep the story from feeling too episodic, and they're both really well cast and I loved watching them. They are in love
removing the jokes on Alvida's appearance: yes. Overall I think they did a good job translating the humor, keeping the absurdness and silliness while also removing what wouldn't fly very well in live action.
Luffy should have been Brazilian but Iñaki Godoy is truly a finding, his performance is top notch and I can't imagine anyone else playing the role. Also in the "might have been created in a lab specifically to play their role" category are: Jacob Romero (there was not a second Usopp was on screen that didn't fill my heart with joy), Craig Fairbrass, Peter Gadiot, Aidan Scott.
special bullet point for Buggy because yeah. you have already heard that but my god he is THAT GOOD. SO much fun to watch.
another special bullet point for Taz Skylar. I didn't mention him in the list above because I guess you can say that technically Sanji is significantly different in the LA than in the mange, but tbh the change was for the better. amping up his charm and giving him a wannabe womanizer vibe was the perfect choice. his chemistry with Zeff was amazing (that one second in which they're fighting and you can see Sanji mouthing along to what he's saying because they've had this fight so many times before? CINEMA). their goodbye broke my heart.
Baratie might have been my favorite arc. and it's a really good arc in the manga so I'm amazed by how much they got it right.
Usopp/Kaya kiss!!!
obsessed with the absolutely random flirting between Zeff and Garp. old men yaoi stays winning
Koby and Luffy's hug was everything I didn't know I needed. also Koby getting drunk. just... Koby.
usually I'd find "omg they did it exactly like the manga panels" kind of a meaningless compliment but the scene where Nami asks for Luffy's help hit me like a brick. it was perfect.
their vows at the ending of the season gave me chills. Watching this show was so much fun and made me relive the excitement this story gave me as a child; a lot is said about an adaption having to capture "the essence" of the original which is of course super vague, but however you interpret it, I think it happened here. This show has so much heart and passion and is just a joyful, fun thing to experience. I can't wait for next season

Ive been thinkin about Herbert a lot because I like him even though hes in like 1 and 1/2 scenes in total and most of his characterization comes from my own headcanons and godddddd his dynamic with his dad is so fucking weird and Im so mad theyre just never going to elaborate on it. I mean unless they wanted to do some Andrew Lloyd Webber's Love Never Dies type shit but I dont think thats happening anytime soon
And to be clear, im talking about the musical bc in the movie its just like, Herbert has his little gay moment with Alfred when he kinda corners him against the wall when they first get to the castle and then he has his big gay moment with Alfred with the flirting advice book, and then later the count is talking to Abronsius on the roof like "we'll have eternity to spend together, just like little Alfred and my son >:)" and its like, okay if things had gone according to their plan we wouldve had regular yaoi (that is to say two twinks) and old man yaoi (that is to say two old men) happening parallel to each other in this fucked up castle, and also Sarah wouldve been around and Im sure she wouldve been in a really weird position between Alfred and Count Krolock, although tbh I feel like she wouldnt have stuck around for too long if she didnt have to, like her whole thing was she wanted to be free from her shitty dad who never let her go outside I think she wouldve started traveling the world at the first opportunity but whatever
But in the musical its like, Herbert and Krolock are both clearly interested in Alfred and theyre both clearly aware of each others interest where Krolock is like "hey boy Im interested in, go be boyfriends with my son youre exactly his type" and Herbert is like "oh, father is so begeistert by you" like oh yeah? Whats he begeistert by? his submissive breedableness? And once again, Sarah is also there as part of this weird love formation, except this time its like a little more requited on all sides because Krolock is interested in both Alfred and Sarah and Sarah is interested in both Krolock and Alfred and Alfred is interested in Sarah and hes like scared of Krolock bc hes a vampire but you can easily interpret that as him being scared of his own homosexuality if you want, really Herberts the only odd one out in that dynamic by virtue of being the only non-bisexual in that castle
Before I continue with the actual point of this post, I just wanted to say that it just occured to me that that mess is basically the only non-monogamous portrayal of vampires I can think of in fiction, which tells me that I either need to seek out better vampire media or that our society is so hetero- and amatonormative and obsessed with the idea of Only One True Love Forever to the detriment of actually telling interesting stories about immortals who would naturally have very different opinions on love, which iiiiiiiis a lil bit frustrating ngl
Anyway, the fact that they Herbert and his dad barely interact is insane to me, Krolock is just like "this guy here is my son, everyone say hello to my son" when they get to the castle and then they never speak again like bro youre a VAMPIRE if you have a son youre gonna need to explain that a little

I started shipping it when I started reading the Djurador posts on tumblr. I didn’t even know what they looked like at that time until I researched further. And then I instantly got attached bc hah. Old man yaoi /j
My thoughts
I LOVE THEM!!! ugh they’re so good together. I love how even if they never met they just somehow click??? If that makes sense. Also bc i Like seeing these two unhinged individuals actually be sane together.
What makes me happy about them:
All the scenarios where they just be as chaotic as possible together. They always make me laugh,,, these guys deserve to at least relax sometimes even through their own weird ways. Also things I cannot say here but Marble u know. (Ok and also closed species- (gunshots))
What makes me sad about them:
That they don’t interact or even talk about each other in canon 😭😭 pls,,, I’m starving. I have to have content or I’ll shrivel up and disappear /j

Just honestly being together even in the midst of Yharnam… maybe they would leave but Djura still wants to keep the beasts safe so they would be content just living together and working out their traumas together. Also bc their 300+ wingmen that bark at their door.

Do you want me to rate all of them? It will be too long... How about the actors I liked? I can rate say top few ones.. rest all consider not good for my standards 😉
Okay so here it goes.. I am excluding KP actors because I already rated them.
My favourite Top BL actors list
(I'll not be able to name the actual actors names in some cases, I'll add them where I know them from here otherwise I'll use BL/character names)
Ohm Pawat - Pat from Bad Buddy. I actually liked him in Bad Buddy but I became a full blown fan after watching He's coming to me. Man that boy has some motherfucking talent. Body language, expressive face, emotional eyes. You ask and he has it. We are extremely lucky he is doing BLs.
Chris/Tang Yi - from History Trapped. He is so amazing. The range he played from a soft boy to the ruthless mafia to man in love just chef's kiss. His break down scene broke my heart to pieces. I am still to recover.
Kiyoi - from Utsukushii kare. He is beautiful and talented. The amount of pain he displayed in his last confession scene was just not done. He had no right to slay so much. I loved his dual personality portrayal when he is with Hira in front of others and when they are alone. That itself is worthy of all the praise he should get from this world. Still will not be enough. Also he has textbook case looks of a Yaoi lead.
Toagawa and Nozue San - from old fashioned cupcake. Both of them, can't choose one. Wouldn't be fair. It's such brilliant piece of media, even if they had acted average it could have been good. But no, they hit it out the parks in each and every fucking scene. Not one shot was out of character. Their mannerisms in the office, in restaurants, on their little dates , when they are alone are just so on point always. Just go and watch it again and see what I am saying. The 4min or so long uncut shot where Togawa confesses. Brilliant. Awesome. No words will do justice.

“yaoi” and “gei” (gay) manga are different genres specifically bc actual mlm in japan didnt feel represented by yaoi (since… you know… its made primarily by and for non-mlm, mostly het women) so they had to make their own Gay Manga LOL. personally i’d say yaoi being inherently from a fetishistic perspective makes it Problematic but that’s just me!
right, but (assuming this is re the stuff I put in the tags of that one post) the mangaka this person recommended as 'mlm' was Nojiko Hayakawa who is 1. female (according to mangaupdates.com) 2. has 'I draw BL' in her twitter bio 3. again, according to mangaupdates.com, mostly draws BL manga that gets published in BL-specific magazines.
I get the point you're making but this specific instance was not someone talking about gay manga made by & for gay men but someone trying VERY hard not to call something by the name it was written and published under. I am not wild about the term BL but it's the generally accepted international term for the genre so that's what i would tag it as u know.
I do want to say a couple of other things, one of which is that there's plenty of popular gay mangaka who are totally bonkers fetishistic - As Is Their Right! - eg gengoroh tagame (him MOST of all), jiraiya .... some of the things yaoi gets criticised for are def present in gay manga, certainly in gengoroh tagame's work - eg misogyny and erasure of women, characters who don't consider themselves gay, absolutely WILD consent issues. (years ago people used to post old scanlated gengoroh tagame on tumblr. INDESCRIBAble frankly.) But this is art from 25 years ago and gay manga has I'm sure moved on. I don't know enough about it! practically none has been licensed / published in english. (I thought of 'my brother's husband' btw but turns out it was published in a seinen magazine)
And the other is that BL media has developed and continues to change; the content is changing and the audience - certainly the audience today - is not just comprised of cis het women, it just IS a bit more complicated, partly because it's become so international: I absolutely am not an expert here (i have read some fumi yoshinaga. I have seen some thai dramas) but i'm writing this having just got through about half of this literally 2.5 hr long seminar 'The History and Transformation of BL in Asia' and a couple of things stood out to me (I took notes because i take notes for everything) :
one of the academics, Akiko Mizoguchi, says that as a child she read Moto Hagio, Keiko Takemiya etc, the 'beautiful boy' manga of the 70s: the characters didn't necessarily grow up to be gay in the comics but it was possible to imagine them doing so; this helped her realise her own homosexuality
she says recent BL has transformed somewhat from the old-school extreme seme-uke, 'not gay', heteronormative stuff to a genre where protagonists who identify as gay 'engage in realistic episodes' eg about coming out, in a way that's 'more advanced' than the reality in Japan - ie not exactly realistic - but it can function as a model for overcoming homophobia - she refers to this as 'transformed' and 'transformative' BL, and argues it has activist potential.
BL in Thailand is popular with and written by BOTH women AND same sex attracted men ... the academic Thomas Baudinette breaks down the fandom as 21% male, 78% female - far from an even split but this is really quite a lot of men. Thailand has (unlike most countries) hung on to the term 'yaoi' - they talk about y-novels, y-series, y-comics etc.
He's also done research into BL in Japan and found - controversially - that there ARE japanese men who read and enjoy BL manga, though he doesn't give stats. He argues that whether we see something as BL or as gay depends on who is consuming the text, not on who the creator is.
listen anon this is way too long already and it's late where i am but tbh I think what i'm really saying is that the picture is complicated and these genres are capable of doing many things. I also think we tend to be really focused on analysing bl media and tend to under-report fetishism in mainstream media: there's jarringly gratuitious stuff in mainstream shounen manga and anime.... but most of all i DOOOO really recommend the video of the talk i mentioned . genuinely REALLY interesting and touches on all these issues And more.
