wanderlust legacy challenge part one

hi guys welcome to a new legacy challenge! i’ve had the itch to make a new one since coming back to simblr, so here goes.

you need all packs to be able to play this legacy challenge fully

the premise of this legacy challenge is: each generation has it’s own world. you are only allowed in the world of the generation you are currently playing, or the worlds of generations past. for a “hard mode”, only allow yourself to play in the current generations world. this means, no leaving the world for dates, days out, events, parties ect.

tips: at the start of each legacy challenge, you have full rein to do whatever you would like to the world you’re moving into. add new community lots and townies. make the world you’re playing in fun and exciting. include as many types of community lots you can. once the generation begins, you are not allowed to edit your world any further. (apart from editing sims if they grow up ugly for example lol)

note, your sims are allowed to interact with townies from different worlds, but they are NOT allowed to marry them, or go over to their house. you MUST marry a sim from your generation’s world.

rules, or not so much rules: you are allowed to play this legacy challenge as loosely or as strictly as you’d like. preferably you will use no money cheats, job or skill cheats, but honestly play the way you enjoy the game! use any sort of mods you like to enhance your own enjoyment. this legacy challenge is here for fun after all.

you can play this legacy challenge on any age length! just no pausing aging. normal aging is recommended, short aging is definitely for hard mode, but i personally enjoy long aging so it’s totally up to you. you can also have as many or as few pets as you’d like unless specified otherwise.

i’ve included links at specific points to help you complete the challenge

without further adieu, lets begin!

generation one: willow creek

this is it, your first ever place away from home!! you’re excited, but nervous. your legacy starts here and now. you’ve felt like you needed a new start for a while, and finally earned enough money from busking in the streets to find a rundown home. it’s a fixer-upper, but you see lots of potential! hopefully this will be your new base for the future years. you can see your music career taking off here. maybe even starting a band? and what about the future? is this place good for children? you wonder if this is the right move. but it’s too late to turn back now...

age: young adult (hard mode: start as a teen)

traits: ambitious, perfectionist, loner (hard mode: add “perfectionist” when YA)

aspiration: musical genius

likes/dislikes: likes guitar and singing (hard mode: no likes/dislikes)

rules:

- max guitar, singing and one other instrument skill (hard mode: max all instruments) - reach at least level 6 of the parenting skill - be the leader of a band (club) and meet at least once a week to practice - marry someone from willow creek - complete your aspiration, musical genius - have 3 children, but one is an “accident” with a member of your band (hard mode: have this child while being married; you cannot marry this band member) note: the “accidental” child is your gen 2 heir - reach level 10 of the entertainer career (musician branch) - busk regularly to earn Simoleans until level 5 of your career - your spouse must have a negative relationship with the child that is not theirs - when your gen 2 heir becomes a teen, your relationship with your spouse falls apart, and you divorce - maintain high relationships with each member of your band (including the parent of your child) - have at least “good friend” relationship with each of your children (hard mode: max out all relationship bars with your children) - have a music room in your home

generation two: oasis springs

your childhood was slightly confusing and difficult. you were often referred to as an “accident” by your step-parent. they very obviously hated you, but luckily you had a really good relationship with both of your real parents. just like them, you love and appreciate music, but you saw how stressful life as a musician could be. so you found a hobby in science and video games! you got lost in the world of outerspace, and dreamed one day of meeting a real life alien. you heard that alien abductions were happening in oasis springs, so on your 18th birthday, you left home and moved to the desert, hoping to one day meet an alien in the flesh...

traits: squeamish, geek, music lover

aspiration: computer whiz

rules:

- max the logic and rocket science skills

- complete your aspiration, computer whiz - reach at least level 5 in the video gaming, handiness and programming skill - reach at least level 5 in an instrument of your choice (hard mode: max the skill) - keep a positive relationship with your parents and siblings - have a negative relationship with your step-parent - work in the scientist career until you visit sixam - once you have visited sixam, you have the choice of: continuing in the scientist career until level 10, or swapping to the astronaut career and reaching at least level 7 (either branch) (hard mode: reach level 10 in both careers) - fully create a rocket and visit space at least 5 times - complete the space rocks collection and the geode collection - if your sim is male, attempt to become pregnant via alien abduction (you may use cheats for this if it feels like its never going to happen) - you must marry an alien (important: this alien MUST live in oasis springs, so i recommend pre creating them and placing them as a townie who is living amongst other sims) - have as many children as you like note: the gen 3 heir must be an alien

generation three: newcrest

note: with newcrest being a vacant world, this is the most creative you can get with designing your generations world! feel free to get creative. i can’t wait to see what style of newcrest you create

being an alien is hard. everyone looks at you funny, and that makes you sad. you’re just like everyone else, and wish they would stop teasing you. you spend most of your childhood in disguise, as you hate being picked on for being different. you’ve learnt to cover up your self consciousness by making self deprecating jokes. and it seems like you’re actually pretty funny! once you realize you’re actually good at being comedic, you start to become more confident in your real self, and go through a stage of self acceptance. you feel bad for your past self, as you learn to love who you truly are. you’re beautiful because you’re different! you move to newcrest to leave the bullies behind, and start a new chapter of your life where you don’t have to hide yourself or be self conscious anymore! you’re going to be an inspiration and encourager for people who are different like you.

traits: goofball, childish, self assured (must be gained in this order)

aspiration: joke star

rules:

- max the comedy and charisma skill - complete your aspiration, joke star - reach at least level 5 in the mischief, writing and photography skill - you must be your alien self for the majority of your YA+ time (mods allowed/encouraged!) - use your alien abilities as often as you can, especially “probe” as you find this very hilarious - reach level 10 of the social media career (internet personality branch) - reach at least 20,000 simstagram/social bunny (?) followers - adopt a cat or dog, and make them a simstagram with at least 5,000 followers - perform comedy routines and write comedy books in order to earn simoleans on the side - marry your best friend (from newcrest ofc) - have 4 children, 2 of which must be twins (cheat allowed) - prank your spouse and children regularly - must throw a big party for every holiday, event and birthday - complete the space prints collection - you must breed your cat/dog and the gen 4 heir must take their kitten/puppy with them!

worlds you are allowed to visit: willow creek, oasis springs, newcrest (plus sixam ONCE if you want to)

generation four: magnolia promenade

your parents always taught you to be yourself and to do what you love. you are very confident in your creative ability and always dreamed of running your own store, selling things you create. your teachers even once called you a “young van gogh”. this was the best thing you ever heard, and now you vow to never let that teacher down! you’re determined to make your family proud by becoming a brilliant business owner and earning millions selling your art! mainly for your pride but, you can’t lie, the money is an added bonus.

traits: self absorbed, creative, art lover

aspiration: fabulously wealthy & painter extraordinaire

rules:

- you must max the creativity skill as a child - if you go out to dinner as a child, you must draw on placements - max the painting skill, plus 2 other crafting skills (flower arranging, fabrication, knitting or cross stitching) - reach at least level 5 charisma and baking skills - make at least 50,000 simoleans selling on plopsy (i’d keep track of this on a notepad or something) - reach level 10 of the painter career - once completing this ^ open your own store selling art - paint every type of emotional painting at least once - paint at least 10 masterpieces - complete both aspirations, fabulously wealthy & painter extraordinaire (in any order) - be companions with the pet you brought from your family home - marry someone who is also creative, must live in magnolia promenade - ^ have your first date, and get married in an art gallery lot - your spouse enjoys fishing, and must complete the fish collection (only they are allowed to travel to different worlds to complete this, not your heir or your children) - have 5 children, all are creative apart from 1, this will be your gen 5 heir - go on at least 2 family holidays to granite falls - have an art studio room in your home

generation five: windenburg

you were surrounded by beautiful art as you were growing up. both of your parents were extremely creative, as were your siblings. you always felt overshadowed by them, as your parents valued art above any other skill. you loved your childhood but always felt a bit like the black sheep. you made art in your own way, through cooking. your parents sometimes baked with you on weekends, and you became fascinated with food. now it’s your turn to make your own masterpieces, and become the best chef that windenburg has ever seen!!

traits: foodie, gloomy, snob

aspiration: master chef

rules:

- max cooking, baking and gourmet cooking skills - try to garden, gather and fish your own ingredients when you can - reach at least level 5 gardening, fishing and handiness - own all types cooking items in your home (oven, outdoor grill, cupcake machine, pit, ect.) - never eat a quick meal or cook in a microwave - your spouse must reach level 10 gardening - throw at least 5 dinner party or weenie roasts (hard mode: earn gold on all of them) - join the garden gnomes and upper crusts - complete the gardening collection - complete any “odd jobs” that require cooking meals - reach level 10 of the food critic career - write at least 3 cookbooks - create a grand meal for every holiday - cook together with your family at least once a week - complete the aspiration master chef - never cook the same meal twice in a row - fully upgrade your oven - have 2 children

generation six: city living

you had a wholesome, loving and fun childhood filled with good food and fun. you lived in a small little village and were known as “the chef’s kid”. even though you love where you lived, the city really calls to you! you’re in search of more adventure and excitement, and maybe even danger? your parents support the move, but you might not want to tell them everything you get up to in the city...

traits: dance machine, commitment issues, party animal

aspiration: serial romantic and soul mate

rules:

- max dancing, mixology and bowling skills - reach at least level 5 in charisma, singing and dj mixing skills - complete the aspiration serial romantic as a young adult - never stay in a relationship longer than 1 season - have at least 3 children from 3 different sims as a young adult - be in the criminal career for your young adulthood, must reach level 5 at least - attend or throw a party at least twice every week - you are never allowed to say no to going to a party or bar (unless they are not in your accessible worlds) - once you reach adulthood, marry your best friend and have two more children - once you reach adulthood, reach level 10 in the mixology career - complete the soulmate aspiration as an adult+ - complete the snow globe and city posters collections - never become better than “friends” with your children - have a negative relationship with all prior lovers - your spouse must have a maxed out relationship with all of your children, even their step-children - your spouse must reach level 10 parenting skill

generation seven: forgotten hollow

your childhood was confusing. receiving no love from one parent but endless amounts of love from the other gave you whiplash. it definitely did not give you a good perception on how relationships should work. you withdrew into your own fantasy world of vampires. you loved reading books about them, watching films about them, and you even started to dress like them! you were definitely the weird, quiet kid in school, and only had a few friends who were also obsessed with the supernatural. after hours of research, you finally found some solid evidence that vampires do indeed exist. and now you’re about to find out for real...

traits: bookworm, hot headed, romantic

aspiration: master vampire

rules:

- max vampire lore and medium skill - reach level 5 pipe organ - live in a haunted house - work as a paranormal investigator - summon bonehilda - date caleb and lilith at the same time without the other knowing until max relationship levles - once both are maxed, you must choose one of them and break up with the other - ask the sibling you chose to turn you into a vampire - ^ only allowed to become a vampire once you are max vampire lore skill - ^ must also have two children as a human before changing with the sibling you chose - adopt one human child - become a grand master vampire - choose to feed off of ONLY plasma, or ONLY plasma fruit note: gen 8 heir is the adopted child - complete the crystals collection

generation eight: brindleton bay

you have a secret, and you can’t tell anyone... your childhood was weird, scary and traumatizing. finally you can escape that madness. ghosts, ghouls and vampires, they’re all real. and you lived with them! are you crazy? surely not. it’s time to move on... if possible. you run and never turn back. to the seaside, it’s the only place you feel safe. you find comfort in the animals, and make it your lifes purpose to help them.

traits: paranoid, dog lover, unflirty

aspiration: friend of the animals

rules:

- never speak to your parents or vampire siblings ever again - max the veterinarian, parenting and animal training skill - reach at least level 5 wellness and fitness - adopt a stray dog and become companions - max friendship level with mayor whiskers - teach your companion pet all tricks - do not get enter into any relationship or get married (you don’t trust anyone) - adopt 3 children of baby or toddler age - own your own vet clinic and work there - breed your pets at least once to sell their kittens/puppies - always have at least 1 cat and 1 dog in the household - finish the feather and frog collections - max friendships with all of your children - go to the park with your children and pets at least once a week

generation nine: del sol valley

you grew up by the seaside, in a little cottage with your single parent and two siblings. things were quiet, and you were wrapped up in bubble wrap by your paranoid parent. they were always worried that something bad would happen to you, but you just didn’t understand! you wanted something bigger and louder. lets go live our life to the fullest!!!

traits: high maintenance, materialistic, overachiever

aspirations: mansion barren and world famous celebrity

rules:

- you must finish this generation living in a celebrity home - max the charisma and acting skill - reach at least level 7 in the comedy skill - reach at least level 5 in the fitness skill - reach level 10 in the acting career - meet your spouse via a blind date - woohoo in a money vault at least once - max your celebrity level - always complete money and item based whims - complete your mansion barren and world famous celebrity aspirations - go travelling to selvadorada at least 3 times - complete the omiscan treasures collection - have a cinema room in your house - have at least 4 children, and spoil them all - have a maid/butler - have at least 100,000 followers on your social media page - get a gold rating in all of these parties: house party, black and white bash, incognito costume party, dance party, charity benefit party, fan meet and greet - go on a date at least once a week with your spouse - have at least one “pure breed” pet

generation ten: strangerville

your childhood was loud, rash and honestly too much for your liking. constantly in the limelight made it hard to be yourself! your parents wanted the best for you, but didn’t understand that maybe you didn’t want to be famous and rich. you appreciate the smaller things in life. you were always devastated seeing those in need, homelessness, war, criminal activity, all while you lived in a mansion on top of a hill with more money than you ever needed! you’ve decided to give up everything and follow your heart to a small town named strangerville. you’ve read about some weird things going on here. maybe you can help...

note: i know the strangerville storyline is hated by some, so you can completely skip it by using cheats or mods if you wish*

traits: good, family-oriented, loves the outdoors

aspiration: big happy family

rules:

- you must start with only 10,000 simoleans. donate the rest to chairty - you must start in the little trailer lot and move out once you have enough money/need more space - complete the strangerville story line* - max the parenting and programming skill - reach at least level 5 in fishing, cooking and charisma skills - reach level 10 in the detective career then at least level 5 in the military career - marry a colleague very early into your YA life - start a family very early into your YA life - have 5 children and max out your friendship level with all of them - be best friends with your spouse - have a positive relationship with everyone in town (at least one person from each household) - finish the fossil collection - volunteer with your family at least once a week - every time you get above 40,000 simoleans, you must donate it to charity (unless you are saving for a larger house) - never fullfill money or object related whims - reject all party invites - only throw small parties for birthdays or weddings - if you want a pet, you must adopt them or find a stray in brindleton bay - buy off plopsy as much as possible in order to support small businesses - have a penpal

Simblr Gratitude Day!

I want to be a bit specific in today's thanksgiving:

Thank you, @warwickroyals and @empiredesimparte for being good friends to me, creating worlds of your own within your own world building, sharing meaningful stories, and crafting and sharing incredible custom content. Thank you, @officalroyalsofpierreland for being my closest friend and confidant for literal years at this point. I'm so glad to have met you here. On that same note, Thank you, @aheathen-conceivably for taking the leap and reaching out to me! I'm so glad to have someone with similar interests in this little niche to share fun things back and fourth. Thank you, @lrsimmer for supporting all my crazy schemes and for being such a lovely friend to me. I sincerely enjoy every one of our conversations. Do you help small simblrs get noticed by sharing their posts? I’m smaller blog and I really wished that larger blogs would share everyone’s content. Do you only share larger simblrs posts? You seem to get much interaction with posts too.

Thank you for the ask, Mystery Asker! Let me ask you this, what made you want to start a simblr to begin with? What inspired you to share your sims with the Sims Community?

If you have solid answers to these questions, that's great, but if you have a simblr for the sole purpose of garnering interactions, you may be disappointed. People, I have found, will "like", "reblog", "comment" etc. on posts they genuinely feel connected to or just enjoy the overall aesthetic of. As for my simblr, I try to share both large and small simblr posts, but the same rules apply for me to. If I like it, I interact with it. My reblogging can range from sharing a post with 5 interactions to 100+. I try to make it a point to shout out and reblog any "smaller" simblrs if they cross my dash, but to be frank, oftentimes I miss seeing posts from fellow simblrs that I interact with regularly, just because 1. time zones maybe different, you miss their posts and 2. the amount of posts that cram my dash is overwhelming to go through sometimes. So, I catch up when I can.

Larger Simblrs vs. Smaller Simblrs is kind of a silly arena to try and fight in, at the end of the day, we're all sharing the same content, just told in a different/ creative way. If a larger simblr decides to reblog something of yours, that's great, sometimes that will make your blog stand out to more folks. But, bro, if a "SMALLER" simblr reblogs your post, that's still a win! That means people are engaging with you and loving your content. So just take the W.

I don't necessarily feel like I get a ton of interactions, I may make a post that hits with some folks and I may make a post that doesn't, but at the end of the day, that's not why I share my content. And, it doesn't really matter to me. There's so much other stuff happening in the world, the Sims has just become a fun way for me to disconnect for a bit. I just enjoy gameplay and I'm having fun in the process! I may be the wrong simblr to ask, because, in all transparency, I think I just hit around 150 followers, I think that's a HUGE accomplishment for me because that means 150+ people like to share in my shenanigans. But in terms of the internet/tumblr sphere, it's probably low to average interactions/followers, and I'm okay with that. I hope that makes sense and I hope I am not coming across as rude, because that isn't my intention. If you take away one thing from this rambling reply, just keep doing what you're doing as long as you're having fun, and not hurting others/yourself in the process. Be consistent with posting maybe? Experiment with different aesthetics? Hire an SEO company? (I'm kidding about the SEO company) I don't know, friend, just keep at it. Now, go forth and sim!

Hi Sam! I was wondering if I could ask for some advice on how to make simblr fun again? I love storytelling (it's how I have fun with the game) but lately with writing posts and even in game, I just find myself stressing over if it's good/interesting enough or if I took good screenshots, if my writing is good, etc. I love this game and sharing my stories with this community, so it sucks to feel like this. Thank you sm ♥

Oh Nonny, how I feel this pain. I wish I had a sure fire answer to this but sadly there isn't just one thing that will work.

I will put some advice below for some things that have worked for me in my experience if you're interested in trying them out to try to find that spark again!

Now I have been on tumblr sharing my sims since 2013 so I have seen the community change a lot. Things change, people come and go, it's just the natural way of things. So a lot of the time your community can change around you and so a few years ago sims storytelling was really popular and it was the thing everyone was doing. And I mean everyone.

But now things have sort of fallen off or shifted and there is no shame in that for those who moved onto other things and hobbies. Sims storytelling, at it's core, is a hobby. No one is making money off of it (unless you write it all down and get it published in which case, hell yeah go you!)

That being said, finding your spark again is going to be finding what YOU like about storytelling in the sims.

So here are some tips you can try out in the game to keep it fresh and exciting:

Play the Game

The game has changed a lot and added a lot. It came out in 2014. It's about to be 10 years old. With expansions still being added. Honestly having a family where you can just play through what the game offers you can offer inspiration on how to use in game things for story related things later on.

I have found having a lowkey gameplay (for yourself or even for your blog if you are posting) is an easy way to stay active in the community while keeping things low stakes and casual for yourself while you work on finding your spark again.

Change Up your Post Style

Idk about you Nonny, but nothing gets me less motivated than having to edit photos. If I could just point, shoot, and post, I would have content coming out my ears. Which is what I started doing with my Princess Legacy. All I do is crop it. I add some things here and there but really it's all pretty much easy.

Now what is the best? That is personal preference especially for the project you are doing. However I have definitely discovered the crop method to be SUPER helpful.

It makes me not have to worry about the whole photo. Sometimes I have this SUPER awesome detail in the back of a photo but when I crop them I lose all that. Which is not good for storytelling lets be honest but does force me to focus on what is actually important in the shot.

Example: Here is the full cottage photo from above You can see that I cropped out a lot of the cottage in favor of being able to see the deer and swans as i thought that was more a cozy fairytale vibe than just the cottage itself. I lost a lot of this detail yet the point still came across.

TBH the paired crop photos also makes me cut out a lot of access photos if they don't have a pair. It's sort of made me realize how much I don't need to take screenshots of. Though I am definitely an overtaker of photos so I always have plenty to choose from. Sometimes I even queue them then look back and realize they aren't needed and delete. It's humbled me a bit.

I could break down every one of these posting styles but that's a whole other thing you didn't ask about.

TLDR of this section is to experiment with how you post. You can have a lot of fun with that.

If Something is Boring, Skip it.

Do you hate the infant stage? Age them past it. Do you hate the winter months in game? Set seasons to never have winter. Do you hate in game holidays ruining your plans? Delete them all from your calendar. Is it a crucial part to your story? Not anymore. Write around it. Or find some creative angles and dialogue to write over it.

Make the game fit you!

Follow the Inspo

Have inspiration to make a new sim in CAS? Do it! Want to make a whole new save? Have an idea for one scene that could start a whole story but you have nothing else for it? DO IT!!!

The game is supposed to be fun. If you have inspiration for a project, live in it. Have fun with it.

But Sam, what if only lasts 2 weeks and I never touch it again?

Me too, babes. Happens to me all the time. Own it. Keep it around in case you want to mess with it later. Have 10 million saves. It's your life and if it brings you a moment of joy to work on it, then it totally is worth it.

If you want to be like me: Be chaotic and post it too. Then private the posts later when you decide to never touch it again. Never delete tho. I always tend to regret deleted things.

Find Your Community

You should ultimately write and create for yourself, but find others who are doing it too! Lift them up as well! Use one day a week on your blog to give reblogs or shoutouts to your fellow creators and writers! It's all about lifting each other up and making friends who all have the same hobby as us.

Try New Challenges

A lot of my sims storytelling started from inspiration around legacy challenges. I loved to take challenge rules and figure out how to make a story around them. But remember: Rules are made to be broken. Especially in favor of a good story.

If you are working on a current challenge/story, find another to merge with it or to give yourself a heck of a fun plot twist. There are no rules!

Have Fun!

This is sort of the whole crux of it, right? And if you're not having fun then...

Take a Break

You are not beholden to your queue! Let it die out! Disappear for 6 months. Return when you want. Go play Animal Crossing or BG3 or whatever it is at the moment. Sims is a hobby. But it does not have to be your ONLY hobby. Let your brain rest.

In my case, whenever I leave the sims I am always filled with ideas and ready to come back in like 3 days.

This could also mean take a break from your save too. Maybe spend some time in CAS. Or in build mode. Or cleaning out your mods. You can still do sims things while letting your story brain rest.

TLDR:

There is no right answer for this, Nonny. I promise your photos are all gorgeous and your story is wonderful! But creativity like anything ebbs and flows so give yourself that grace to let yourself rest and just enjoy the game again, or enjoy time away from it! You deserve it you superstar creator!

March ummm Marches on and I hear the Oscars are tonight? Oh fun, so others will be receiving appreciation as well! It's always good to get acknowledgement from your peers, it just makes you feel seen and that is important! Here are five simblrs I've definitely seen lately and happy so share as well!

@mdianasims ~ This is a simblr thats been awhile for a while but that is by no means a bad thing, in fact its the opposite! It means they have a lot of content to binge on! If you enjoy gameplay simblrs I am pointing you to the right direction!

@teddytrait ~ Another gameplay simblr with beautiful posts! Also one newer to me! I just really love the aesthetic of the posts and the tone of them as well!

@katalinaize ~ I do love storytellers and I love ones willing to tell more mature stories. That's after my own heart truly! I just started reading this one but I'm happy to share it and hope a few more will enjoy it as well!

@nexility-sims ~ The second time I've put her on here and super likely won't be the last! Again, not only are the stories amazing, writing and pictures, but the simblr is very supportive of others! This is important to me because if everyone just cliqued up this place would be pretty boring!

@okiyukiyo ~ A gameplay/legacy simblr that you might already know about but if you don't know now you know! Just an amazing aesthetic and presentation, a simblr filled with pretty pictures and posts!

Time really does fly! Next week this time we'll be more than half way through March which is crazy since it feels like its just started?! Either way you know I'll have 5 more simblrs to share then!

I really want to start my own legacy challenge and post it here! But idk how to make it look as pretty and as good as you, do you have any tips?

Nonny, first and foremost, thank you! 🥰

While I am usually very happy with the way my posts look now, it wasn’t always that way, and I think the biggest part of this is the process. If you go back and look at my early story posts (and even before that, to my first builds that I posted here) you’ll see that the style and techniques I used then are very different than what I do now.

All too often I find simblrs (and creators in general) will delete or redo their early work. As a perfectionist myself I totally get and share that instinct, but simultaneously I think that looking back helps remind me that it takes practice and discovery that’s still ongoing. I’ll try to help with a few tips I’ve learned along the way, but I truly don’t think there’s any better answer than trial and error!

1. Camera tips and tricks:

First and foremost, always take your photos in tab mode. Even if it’s just gameplay shots, this allows you to get creative with angles and go closer/further away for those detail shots or sweeping landscape ones. On that note, don’t be afraid to take the same photo from multiple angles so that you can look back at them and choose the best one.

Something I read very early on that helped me was to zoom in as close as possible to the shot that you want, and then back away using the S key rather than zoom out. Likewise, avoid zooming in and out and then in again in tab mode, as it can cause distortion in the background. However, there are also times when that distant background looks great, so this is just a good place to start that you can play around with over time. And have fun! Get those detail shots and low angles and things that might not seem like the most obvious shot but somehow work really well.

2. Take time on the details:

Now this is an overarching one because I mean all the details, from the world, to the builds, to interior decorating, to sim details, to their outfits. Now you may only enjoy a handful of these, and by no means do you have to jump in with all of them at once. For me, I really enjoy interior decorating so I put a lot of energy into my sets, that way when I go to take photos the backdrop work is already done. I really try to ensure that the backgrounds of photos are never empty (which is sometimes just clever angles) so this goes a long way to making a post look good and gives the viewer lots of little cues about the sims in the scene.

Likewise, I spend a lot of time on sims outfits. Usually this is in tangent with their personality and where they are in their story, but you’ll also notice small things like characters will not always be wearing shoes at home or an apron/hat will be taken off at an appropriate point in the scene. Small details like this ground a character in their setting and help relate your writing and/or unwritten details to the viewer.

3. Editing:

This is one that I think is really mutable to your personal tastes and goals. I’ve seen some simmers really go above and beyond with unique templates or text while others (ahem, me) will just brighten up or increase the contrast of a shot. I know others will often use photoshop for more detailed editing, but I stick with an online service just to make the brightness and colors pop. Even still, those few extra steps can really balance out the in-game lighting or make a photo even more pleasing to look at, so I really recommend finding something you like if aesthetics are important to you.

4. All the extra things:

Simmers, I think you already know where I’m going with this. Sometimes this game isn’t exactly the most pleasing to look at, so things like lighting mods, swre, or reshade really help you as a creator and can take your screens to the next level. As I’m sure y’all know by now I fought the reshade train for a long time, and even still I can see how this process can be over involved or overwhelming; however I won’t deny that the addition of it to my game is by far the biggest step I’ve taken to making my photos look as good as they currently do, and it has saved me a lot of time on manually editing. But I do not think it’s by any means necessary, and lighting mods are a good place to start for these in-game enhancers.

5. Trust the process

Yes, I’m ending this ramble by reiterating the point I stated at the beginning. I cannot stress enough that it takes time and practice to find your style and the techniques that work for you. I would really encourage you to go back to this post compared to recent ones and look at how different the camera angles and ideas behind the shots are. Changing is okay! Find what you’re really excited about in your images (which for me, y’all may be able to tell from the beginning, was the outfits and set design) and really enjoy that process. It comes through in the images, I promise!

Most of all, don’t feel like you have to perfect your visuals before you start posting here. Community feedback and just the joy of engaging can be such a motivator to continue, and quite honestly, if there is a place to grow your style and content as you go it’s here. People are so willing to help and answer questions as you encounter new roadblocks or ideas, and so starting that network and gathering that inspiration is pivotal to making your content look the way you want it to.

simblr new years resolutions 2024!

honestly, i have never made a new years resolution in my life, so this is a fun exercise to try out for once!

what's your resolution for your simblr?

this is VERYYYYY ambitious but i want to fully complete the core "everything the stars promised" and move on to doing side content and MOST IMPORTANTLY the more loosey goosey fun epilogue :)

april 15th of this year will mark the second anniversary of the story! i've done so much and yet at the same time, so little in the grand scheme of the plot i have in mind. i randomly checked today to see how many pages on my blog the story takes up and we're at 31 pages! so, uh, about 15 pages a year - not sure if that's good progress or not but oh well! we are getting close to the extra exciting parts of the story, and i would love to finish it all up this year, you know? finish on a nice round even anniversary number and with a bunch of plot point bangers lolol

but we'll see! it's possible, maybe, since i'm graduating college this semester and will have more free time for a while, at least i as figure out the work situation and probably even while working whenever i do get a job since nightly homework will no longer exist LMAO, but even if it's not possible, i am definitely promising myself to work harder on the story! i really do love this thing despite it all and i'm proud of it, and i want to see how much i can keep improving it so that the ending is truly the best part <3

what do you want from the sims franchise?

a sale on kits lmfaoooo!!! (which will never happen) i have exactly 5 dollars left over from an old gift card someone gave me for ea app when it was still origin. it's exactly enough for a kit except that sales tax adds on 7 cents and the gift card leftovers don't cover that.

yeahhhh...i'm neither charging 7 cents for sales tax nor 5 bucks for a second kit to my credit card. no, ma'am. i want that shit for FREE

any other new years resolutions?

don't become incredibly depressed by the shock of leaving the school system after almost 23 years of life and the horrors of figuring out the whole...life and career...thing

lol this resolution will be broken

so, how about an achievable one? read more books and write more actual prose, whether for my sims story or for something else. i've been so burnt out from academia that it's all stopped being fun. like even my sims story has been such a drag to create because i just have zero desire to write, to work on the outline, or find inspiration.

and that really sucks. writing and reading have been a huge part of my life for so long and they mean a lot to me, but right now they do feel exhausting. i'm tired of looking at a word document and wanting to bash my head into the keyboard because it reminds me of writing project proposals and boring shit instead of good fiction.

but i'm hoping the freedom from academia will spark joy in my literary hobbies again, and i'm going to try and bring back my love for them myself :) not sure how but aside from finding a way to work on the sims story more, i'm thinking maybe i'll commit to trying out more short-form writing prompts.

Ohhh, okay! I can do this one quickly (famous last words)! Since today is a non vet day I'm going to try get a good session of gaming in and answer the others later on!

The answer in a word is MERCEDES

Infanthood: If you were with me way back when you'll know Mercedes had a rough start. By this I mean she would achieve a milestone, only for the game to log it as Savannah having gotten the milestone. This meant Mercedes needed to work extra hard to get hers locked in.

While Savannah began to babble at around 1 year old, Mercedes didn't get to babbling until she was almost 2, at which point Savannah had already said her first word. Mercedes didn't say her first word until...

Toddlerhood: It took her a while to learn to talk, which only fueled her aggression when she felt like she wasn't being listened to. Eventually she was diagnosed with a speech language delay which has persisted into...

Childhood: Here she is slowly learning more words but still has the delay. Not everyone with a language delay has the same experience. Mercedes experience is around the sounds of words. You will most often see her use words that sound like the word she is meaning, but mean a different thing. Occasionally she will use simpler language to communicate what she means rather than attempt the bigger words.

Examples

Mercedes: Be quiet Viola, I’m focus (concentrating)

Mercedes: TV new (premiere) day here we GOOOOO

Mercedes: Sol.. solid… together. We stick together (solidarity)

Mercedes: I don’t know, my words are still trippy (tricky)

For Simblr Gratitude Day!

This year, 2023 has been a really really amazing year for me creatively. I wrote over 270K words, I started and finished both parts 2 and 3 of Lucky Girl and I started Lucky Boy! When I began writing last year I really didn't see myself at this point, having written so much, having improved so much, and most importantly, having falling completely head over heels for this amazing community

Without the support and amazing feedback from so many people I would have quit a long time ago, but coming here and talking to you guys and being so incredibly inspired by other work is what really pushed me past the finish line. I want to express my gratitude for every single person who engaged with me this year, for those who liked and commented and shared and left me questions and anon asks, and even those who didn't, and just read along in silence - I see you there! You can't hide! Thank you so much.

This graph only shows my top 10, but I reached over 50 countries this year! that's pure mad.

You can see that it's the Americans and the British who really came through for me, and I'm sorry for poking gentle fun at you in my story - I know you are more than semi-automatic machine guns, UFOs & undesirable tourists, you know how it is, we're like the ignored middle child between you two and I'd be going against my cultural heritage if I didn't act up a little bit.

Most importantly I want to thank specific people today! Starting with @armoricaroyalty for making this day happen, and @daniigh0ul for coming up with the idea. I'm really excited to get to know you both much better in the new year & finally find the time to start reading your stuff - I've heard only good things.

to @sirianasims for poking me to join the writers group that has now absolutely swallowed up my free time (in a good way lmao) and for being hilarious and fun and just generally a gorgeous, open and supportive person. I've been reading Siri's story lately and I INSIST you check it out - I'm on gen 3 and completely obsessed by the thought that goes into this, the complexity of the relationships and really sensitive exploration of difficult material.

to @lynzishell for always being so positive and engaged, always taking the time to leave thoughtful comments and get genuinely excited over everyone's work! I'm DUG INTO her legacy, which is still on gen 1 and it makes my day better every single time I see an update from her - and I'm not even just saying that to be nice. It's an honest to god thrill for me to get to read about her characters. I'm beyond excited for what she's going to do in the new year

@mannylikessims deserves a shout out too for writing some of the best and funniest simlit I've had the pleasure of reading in a long time. Those Villarreal kids (and Jacques, obviously) have me on the edge of my seat. I feel insatiable for this story, like, give me more, all of the time. Just shovel it into my mouth. Manny has also brought me to literal tears with her comments. It's rare enough that you meet a reader that seems to truly understand what you're trying to say in your work - like, right to the heart of it, and Manny is one of those people.

I've just recently started reading @rebouks Somnium and Forever In Between (Don't do what I did if you haven't read yet - start with Somnium) and when I say I am HOOKED I mean it. The visuals alone are enough to make me want to burst into tears with the knowledge that I will never wrangle something so beautiful from the game, but you know what, that's okay, because I can come here and sob over Becca's work instead. I'm not even halfway through and I'm already bowled over by the character development, the dialogue, the humour, everything. The only thing I wish is that I had unlimited free time and 0 commitments so I could absolutely consume this work in one sitting, but I guess savoring it is good too.. Thank you Becca for pure inspiration <3

@pixelnrd for The Langston Legacy, a decades challenge which was actually the first sims 4 legacy I ever read - I stumbled across it on my very first day on simblr and I've loved loved loved it every since. The visuals are gorgeous, the story lines are always engaging, and just about every topic under the sun has been covered now. The dedication to accuracy is really admirable, and now that we've reached the 80s I'm genuinely beginning to feel nostalgic. I always find myself wanting more. I'm so much looking forward to the 90s! (And I can't believe you've made it this far, that's an achievement and a half)

Other storytellers and creators I want to shout out are @simstrashkingdom, @bakersimmer @simmysunset @igglemouse @simsstuph - You guys have created some really great stories this year, and I so long forward to reading more!

To @nexility-sims for creating our wonderful writing group (and for pairing with me) I'm dying to start reading your work properly, because even the small bits I've read have been so beautiful.

And to everyone else in the writing group! I know I have so many stories to catch up on, and I'm very intimidated by that fact, but I know that it means that 2024 holds a lot of exciting times! I want to learn from you all and be inspired and support you, so this is the year I'm going to do it <3
