human earthworm 4
I saw this cute art by @dontronick and I had to write about it. This is my first JJK writes post, I hope you enjoy! <3
Summary: Yuji takes his friends to the movies and it's an experience.
Word count: 1.5k
---
“C’mon, guys! It’ll be fun!” Yuji begs.
Nobara snorts humorlessly, not looking up as she examines her nails. Megumi also says nothing, continuing to scroll on his phone. They’re sitting on the couch in Gojo’s living room since the man is out for the day, thankfully. No doubt Gojo would invite himself if he knew their plans.
“Nothing named ‘Human Earthworm’ sounds fun,” Nobara finally responds. She crosses her arms over her chest and props her feet up on the coffee table, copying Megumi’s lax position. “I haven't even seen the first three, why would I want to see the fourth?”
Nobara hears a sniffle and when she looks up, she’s met with Yuji’s signature puppy dog eyes, paired with a protruding bottom lip.
“Please?” Yuji whines, dramatically draping himself across both Nobara and Megumi’s legs to get their full attention. His head lands in Megumi’s lap. Megumi makes the mistake of glancing away from his phone and down at Yuji, taking in his sad eyes and pouty lips. “I never ask you guys to do anything!” he adds.
This is true. Yuji is as selfless as they come. He's always willing to be dragged anywhere with Megumi and Nobara (mostly the latter, Megumi hardly goes anywhere unless he's forced), and he rarely complains about it.
The longer Yuji stares at Megumi, the more his reserve begins to crack. Not that it was very strong in the first place. He’s always had a difficult time saying no to Yuji, *especially* when he gives those stupid puppy eyes.
“Alright, alright,” Megumi groans in forfeit. He covers Yuji's eyes. “Just stop looking at me like that.”
Yuji grins excitedly though he makes no move to get up. With Megumi’s hand still covering his eyes, he misses the unimpressed look Nobara shoots Megumi’s way. The two stare at each other, holding a silent conversation before Nobara huffs and shakes her head.
”Fine, I'll go too,” she relents. Yuji's arms shoot up in victory.
“Yes!”
Nobara shoves him off her lap, and he loses balance, slipping off Megumi’s as well. He lands on the floor with an *”oof”* but it does nothing to crush his excitement.
“But don't expect me to enjoy myself!”
---
Yuji is so excited when they pull up to the theater, practically bouncing in his seat. He's been waiting forever to see this movie. When he sees Junpei standing by the front entrance, Yuji waves enthusiastically.
“Junpei!”
The other boy looks up at the sound of his name and sees Yuji making his way over, followed by two others. Yuji throws his arm around Junpei's shoulders.
“Junpei, I want you to meet my friends Megumi and Nobara.” He gestures to them respectively, then gestures back to Junpei. “Guys, I want you to meet Junpei.”
Junpei smiles nervously at the other two. Megumi's hands are shoved in his pockets, but he gives Junpei a nod in acknowledgment. Nobara, on the other hand, places her fists on her hips as she looks Junpei over. Her gaze makes Junpei want to melt into the ground.
“Are you the one that suggested this movie?” she asks.
“Uh-” Junpei stammers. “Y-yeah.” He reaches up and scratches the back of his head.
Before she can say anything else, Yuji removes himself from Junpei’s shoulders and motions for his friends to follow him. “Let's go get popcorn so we can find a good seat!”
He turns on his heels to head inside the theater. Once their tickets are purchased (Yuji insisted that he pay for them since he dragged them out), the four walk up to the concession counter. Yuji orders a large popcorn and a fountain drink, asking his friends if they want anything either. Nobara gets a box of Skittles, Junpei gets a slushie, and Megumi shakes his head, indicating that he doesn't want anything. Just as Yuji is pulling out his wallet to pay, Megumi is already tapping Gojo’s credit card on the card reader.
“You didn't have to do that, I could've paid.” Yuji nudges his friend.
Megumi shrugs, shoving his wallet back into his pocket. “It’s Gojo’s money. He was feeling generous today.”
Yuji laughs and hands Nobara her Skittles. Junpei grabs the drinks while Yuji grabs his popcorn. The four of them head to the directed theater, which is unsurprisingly empty.
They sit in the middle, Junpei on Yuji's left, Megumi on Yuji's right, and Nobara on the other side of Megumi. She's already pulled out her phone, thumbs tapping away. With the popcorn in Yuji's lap, he munches happily, offering some to Megumi and then Junpei.
“Do your friends like horror movies?” Junpei asks quietly, playing with the straw of his drink.
Mouth full of popcorn, Yuji shrugs. “I'unno.” Instantly he turns to Megumi and nudges him with his elbow. “Junpei wanfs to-”
Megumi holds up a hand to interrupt. “Swallow before you start speaking, for the love of God. You're as bad as Gojo sometimes.”
Junpei chuckles and on the other side of Megumi, he hears Nobara snort. “Where do you think he learns it from?”
Yuji smiles sheepishly and finishes the popcorn in his mouth. “Junpei was just wondering if you guys like horror movies?”
“Does this one even qualify as a horror movie?” Nobara asks, looking up from her phone. “Isn't it about a Human Earthworm that finds love?”
“Yeah!” Yuji laughs.
The lights begin to dim and Yuji turns his attention to the screen, wiggling in his seat eagerly. He shoves another handful of popcorn in his mouth. Glancing to the side, he catches Nobara still on her phone and he throws a piece of popcorn at her.
“Put your phone away,” he hisses at her. Rolling her eyes, Nobara pockets her phone regardless, crossing her arms over her chest as she sits back in the seat.
As the movie plays, Yuji becomes so enthralled that he doesn’t notice Nobara pulling her phone back out of her pocket, dimming the screen as she texts someone else. He leans forward, placing the popcorn bucket next to his feet, eyes glued to the screen. He misses the bemused expressions on Megumi and Nobara’s faces as they turn to look at each other, wondering what the hell is this movie and why did they agree to come.
Nobara’s lip perpetually stays curled up in disgust as she flicks her eyes to the screen before her thumbs tap away at her phone. Megumi seems outright annoyed that he’s wasted his time coming to this stupid film. He glances over to Junpei over Yuji’s shoulders. Junpei makes the mistake of looking to the side, meeting Megumi’s displeased expression.
He shoots Megumi a nervous smile and turns back to the screen as he wrings his hands nervously in his lap. Yuji is oblivious to the exchange, enjoying the movie to its fullest even though each of his friends would prefer to be anywhere else.
The movie eventually comes to an end and the four teenagers file out of the theater. Yuji stretches his arms above his head.
“Well, what did you guys think?” he asks, looking between his three friends.
“Worst movie I’ve ever seen,” says Nobara.
“I would’ve rather watched the Paw Patrol movie with Gojo,” Megumi deadpans.
Yuji grimaces and he looks to Junpei, waiting expectantly for his answer.
Junpei hesitates, rubbing the back of his neck before answering, “I think number three was better…”
Nobara shakes her head and heads toward the exit. “I can’t believe I let you talk me into going. Wasted two and a half hours on that! The directors should be ashamed of this franchise.”
“Hey, it wasn’t that bad!” Yuji exclaims. “You just don’t appreciate good cinema—ow!” Nobara smacks him in the back of the head, effectively cutting him off. He rubs the back of his head and frowns.
Megumi sighs heavily as the other two settle into an argument. He glances at Junpei next to him, who’s watching Yuji and Nobara squabble like siblings. His eyebrows pull together in concern.
“Um—”
“That’s normal,” Megumi sighs again, answering Junpei’s question before it’s even asked. A beat of silence passes between them. “Thanks for letting Nobara and I tag along. Yuji really wanted us to meet you and I guess he thought this movie was the best place to do that.”
Junpei chuckles nervously. “Ah, yeah. I’m sorry this had to be your first ‘Human Earthworm’ experience.”
“Next time, Nobara or I can pick the movie,” Megumi says, the corner of his mouth lifting for a small smile. He claps Junpei on the shoulder before walking off in the direction of his car, motioning for Nobara and Yuji to follow. Immediately, Nobara makes a break for the passenger seat and Yuji lets her in exchange for turning around and walking backwards, giving Junpei a big wave.
“Bye, Junpei! See you later! I’ll text you more about the movie tonight, okay?”
Of course, Yuji isn’t watching where he’s going and trips. His arms flail outward and he’s lucky for Megumi grabbing onto the front of his sweatshirt and pulling him upright to his feet. A bright smile breaks over Yuji’s face and he laughs, waving at Junpei one more time before turning around again, nudging Megumi as he shakes his head.

Rereading JJK again
(Light spoilers maybe??)
I have so many feelings on JJK it’s not even funny. Going back to the beginning of it all, how simple life was for Yuji before everything. How a simple request, to help people, would lead to the most devastating, traumatic experience of this boy’s life. Along with Megumi who was there to collect the curse object and just happened to come across Yuji. He was suppose to kill Yuji for eating Sukuna’s finger but then he wanted him to live. A personal request. That personal request is what made him go through the worst pain imaginable.
I feel like these two world should have never collided in a sense. Megumi and Yuji were never suppose to know/be around each other at all. Fate is a cruel mistress in JJK but also a pleasant one because they found each other and will stick by each other. Even if it was Sukuna that did them in. I’m just think about the possibilities of what it could have been you know?
Sorry for my insane ramblings bc I’m sad rereading the beginning and knowing what happens (this is all for an AU btw and I’m going through the ringer a second time).
Gege I fucking despise you.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Also pray for my gf bc she has to listen to this rambling every time I think about it.

hate you, love you
read on Ao3
words: 2063
After dreaming about Yuji’s death, Megumi finds himself confronted with many conflicting feelings. Meanwhile, Yuji offers a listening ear.
--
“Live a long life.”
The words were whispered, barely audible and slightly strained while Itadori swayed. As he fell, Megumi caught a glimpse of a slight smile before the dull thud against the wet pavement began ringing in his ears. Distantly, he stared downward. It was too dark for him to tell if the liquid slowly flowing toward his shoes was rain water or blood.
He wasn’t sure how long he stood there. His mind was blank and his face was wet, but he could barely feel it. One thought surfaced; why?
Empty, black hopelessness threatened to swallow him up like one of his shadows. He swallowed the thick lump in his throat, his brow furrowing. “Damn you,” he whispered. His voice rose to a roar. “Damn you!”
Itadori didn’t get to tell him to live a long life. That wasn’t fair. He’d saved him twice, and now he couldn’t even repay him.
Suddenly, Megumi shot upright in bed, gasping for air. His chest heaved and his stomach turned, bile threatening to rise up his throat. His burning eyes darted around the dark room, searching for something to land on that wasn’t Itadori’s corpse. He ended up choosing the window that showcased a dark sky littered with stars. Forcing air through his lungs, he stared without blinking until his vision blurred and his heartbeat returned to a somewhat normal speed.
Reaching up, he rubbed his eyes roughly with his knuckles, pointedly ignoring the tear that had slipped down his cheek and plopped onto his lap. He used to have that dream all the time, but it had been awhile since he’d had it. He didn’t think it would still bother him now that he knew the truth.
Despite knowing he was being ridiculous, he pulled back the blankets from his legs and stood up, wobbling slightly on his feet. He huffed angrily and centered himself, closing his eyes to take a deep breath and let it out slowly before allowing himself to stalk over to his door. It creaked open quietly, and he stepped out into the hall.
Megumi hadn’t really had a plan. Maybe he was going to go somewhere else to let off some steam. Maybe he was going to bang on Itadori’s door until he got up so he could yell at him. He hadn’t quite made up his mind, but when he glanced toward the door next to his own, he found it was just slightly open.
Blinking, his anger suddenly replaced with curiosity, he moved quietly toward the cracked door. For a moment, he assumed the worst. Had a cursed spirit managed to slip through Itadori’s door? Had Sukuna escaped somehow? His brows furrowed and he steeled himself for a fight. Any residual sleepiness or grief made way for pure adrenaline instead. Quietly, he pushed the door open just a little more and peeked inside.
The dark room was illuminated by streams of moonlight pouring in through the open blinds. Clothes were strewn about, some trinkets placed here and there to make it look as though a normal teenage boy lived there. The blankets had been kicked onto the floor at some point, and in the middle of the bed was a sleeping Itadori. He lay diagonally across the bed on his stomach, his face turned toward the door where Megumi stood. His mouth hung open, inhaling and exhaling just loud enough for the other boy to hear. He looked ridiculous. He looked peaceful.
Megumi released the breath he hadn’t realized he was holding. There were no curses in sight, which meant Itadori must have just forgotten to close the door before falling asleep. “Idiot,” he mumbled under his breath, moving forward before he realized what he was doing. He crouched down, grabbing one of the blankets, and gently covered Itadori with it. As the other boy stirred, burrowing into the covers, Megumi froze.
“Mmph. Takada? I don’t care about Takada. She’s in the sky,” he mumbled, before falling quiet once more.
A smile pulled at the corners of Megumi’s lips. Of course Itadori would talk in his sleep. His original plan of waking the idiot up would have to wait. Instead, he stood there for a moment, watching the blanket move with each breath until he felt calm again. After probably an embarrassing amount of time, Megumi retreated, slowly moving backward out of the room, closing the door behind him firmly this time.
He exhaled and headed back into his room, closing the door. His own room seemed dark and uninviting by comparison, but the only difference here was that he was alone. That thought startled him, so much so that he rushed to turn on the lamp on his desk. Sinking down in his chair, he put his face in his hands, suddenly feeling hot.
What was wrong with him? Was he coming down with something?
Behind his closed eyes, he saw Itadori grinning at him, wiggling his eyebrows to tease him. He saw Itadori excitedly waving at him from across the field, and he saw Itadori proudly proclaiming how cool Megumi was to some of the second years. He was radiant . Usually, Megumi would just feel so dull in comparison, but right now, his heart was ablaze. What was that feeling? He couldn’t quite pin it down, but he knew whatever the answer was, he wouldn’t like it.
A quiet knock startled him out of his thoughts. Before he could say anything, a voice on the other side spoke while another knock sounded. “Fushiguroooo! I see your light’s on, I know you’re up!”
Megumi’s blood ran cold. He stood up so fast he saw black spots. For a moment, he was confused. Itadori was just sleeping. Why was he up now? He couldn’t tell if it would be more embarrassing if he had accidentally woken him up, or that he had no idea how long he was lost in his thoughts.
As another knock sounded, he took a deep breath, trying to act as normal as possible. He frowned, heading to open the door, and found Itadori standing there with his hand still poised to knock. Immediately, the other brightened, sticking that hand in his pocket.
Megumi looked at him warily. “What do you want?”
Undeterred, Itadori continued smiling. “I got up to get some water and I saw your light was on. I’m not tired anymore, so I wanted to say hi.”
“Okay. You said hi. Go back to bed now.” He moved to shut the door, but Itadori’s hand came up to stop it. He looked up in surprise, finding the other boy’s smile had been replaced with something a little more serious. Frowning, Megumi searched his expression. “…What?”
“You look upset,” he answered plainly. “You’re even more broody than usual. If you’re not gonna sleep, I’m not gonna sleep.”
Itadori had that same determination on his face that he always wore during battle. This was a fight that Megumi would not win. Maybe he gave up a little too easily, but maybe he didn’t really care.
Sighing, Megumi dropped his gaze and opened his door a little further, leaving enough space for the other to step inside. Immediately, Itadori brightened, excitedly moving into the bedroom with a grin on his face. He straddled the desk chair while Megumi shut the door and moved to sit on the edge of his bed.
“Your room is so neat, Fushiguro,” he mused, looking around. “How do you keep it so organized?”
“Uh, I clean it,” he replied awkwardly, not quite sure what else to say. Suddenly it felt so strange, being here alone with him. He never would have thought he’d think this way, but he was starting to wish Kugisaki was here to take away some of this tension. It didn’t seem to bother Itadori. He simply leaned his arms on the back of the chair, taking in Megumi completely as if he were analyzing him. He suddenly felt hot again. “What’re you looking at me like that for?”
Itadori laughed, shaking his head. “You need to loosen up, man.” After a moment, he added, “You wanna talk about it?”
“Talk about it?” he echoed, choosing to ignore the first comment. “Talk about what?”
Itadori rolled his eyes, though there was some aspect of fondness behind it. “Whatever’s bothering you.”
For a moment, Megumi only stared at him. Normally he would immediately brush it off, tell him he was being ridiculous and he was fine. The last thing Itadori needed was to know Megumi was worried about him.
But Itadori was worried about him. His heart felt so heavy in his chest that breathing was almost difficult. He stared down at his lap. “…Why did you switch with Sukuna that night?” he asked, his tongue suddenly feeling much too big for his mouth.
Silence fell. Itadori’s lips parted in surprise. His answer seemed like it was the most obvious thing in the world. “I had to save you.”
Megumi exhaled sharply. His eyes burned again. That wasn’t something Itadori should have had to worry about. Up until a few months ago, he was just a regular kid; it should have been the other way around, except Itadori was continually the one to save Megumi. He used to chalk that up to jealousy, but now he was thinking it might be something a little more.
“I hated you,” he mumbled before he could stop. “I hated you for two months.” When Itadori looked surprised and somewhat hurt, he continued. “You weren’t…supposed to die so soon. I was so angry, I didn’t know what to do with myself.” He wouldn’t admit his dream - he needed to keep the one shred of dignity he had left - but he had a feeling Itadori could fill in the blanks. “I’m glad you’re stronger now, Itadori. But I’m still…” he couldn’t bring himself to say that he was worried. He scoffed instead, looking away.
He was an idiot .
A shuffling sound filled the air but he didn’t dare look up, even after he realized that Itadori had gotten up. The boy walked over to sit beside him on the bed. The mattress dipped down and their shoulders brushed.
“Fushiguro, can you look at me?”
Megumi’s breath caught in his throat. He wondered why his heart hurt so much. He wondered why each word felt like individual punches to his gut. Perhaps despite better judgement, he drew his gaze up to Itadori’s. His eyes were steel, yet somehow still held their warmth. At some point, they had become a source of comfort to Megumi.
“I’m sorry,” he murmured quietly. Without breaking eye contact, he moved to rest his hand on top of Megumi’s. “But I wasn’t gonna let Sukuna hurt you anymore, even at the cost of my own life. That’s why I had to wait two months before telling you I was alive. I needed to get stronger first. Gojo agreed. And,” he added, smiling slightly, “of course you’re gonna be worried. We’re friends. I worry about you too.”
Heat rushed to Megumi’s cheeks again, and he suddenly felt like he was being suffocated. Itadori sounded like he was underwater, and the warmth from his hand on top of his own was all he could think about.
He was in so much trouble.
“Yeah,” he managed, somewhat strained. He didn’t pull his hand away. “Yeah.” Exhaling slowly, he met Itadori’s eyes again. “…Are you tired?”
The question didn’t seem to surprise him. He shook his head knowingly. “No, not really.”
“Then,” he continued, holding his breath for a moment, “will you stay here until you are?”
A huge grin pulled at Itadori’s lips, and he slowly moved his hand from Megumi’s. With an exaggerated stretch, he lay back on the bed so that his legs still dangled off the edge. “Sure can. We can gossip about Kugisaki.”
“No way,” he answered, hesitating a moment before laying down to join him. “Somehow, she’ll hear us.”
Itadori burst into laughter. “Yeah, you’re right. She’s scary sometimes.”
For a long time, they lay there talking about nothing. Megumi listened to Itadori speak, feeling a sense of calm and quiet wash over him, like nothing could go wrong. His eyes grew heavy, and before long, they had closed.
When he woke up in the morning, Itadori was still there. Their hands were intertwined.
