as the sun began to set on the warm city of anaheim, the alcohol began to come out from the shadows, courtesy of none other than.... you guessed it! trevor zegras. he planned this gathering weeks ago in preparation for the start of the regular season. which of course jamie was elected to host.
"alright bitches let's get this damn show on the road." he says holding two packs of smirnoff ices mason just behind him with a 24 pack of twisted teas and a 12 pack of michelob ultra.
"this is all you got?" jamie asks, walking into the room.
"we still have a bunch of of shit from the last few weeks jimbo we're fine." he scoffs placing everything on the counter. jamie's dark damp hair falls over his face as he sets his phone down on the arm of the couch. he runs his fingers through his hair brushing it out of his face and joins everyone in the kitchen as you had already cracked open a few drinks. apparently a few sips was enough for you to find jamie's simple gestures insanely attractive.
"hey y/n, can you pass me a smirnoff?" jamie asks nodding to the pack of originals on the counter near me.
"yeah here." you say passing him one. he opens the bottle eagerly and downs it like water. apparently you were staring because you were snapped out of your thoughts when jamie said your name.
"i was staring wasn't i?" you ask, your cheeks burning red.
"yep, but i was gonna ask if you wanted to shot gun with me?" he asks holding up three twisted teas.
"oh yeah of course, why do you have three?" you ask.
"two for me because i'm trying to get sloshed." he smiles handing you one. you follow the pale canadian into the backyard anxiously.
"ok on my count." jamie says holding up his hand counting down on his fingers. once he hits 1 you crack open the cans and down the drink as quickly as possible. considering you don't drink too often, you were already pretty drunk.
"can you go grab us another ice?" jamie asks as he is about to down the second one.
"yeah of course." you say trying not to trip and face plant your way back into the house. you return with the drinks and he opens your bottle handing it to you before opening his.
"cheers m'lady" he smirks.
"cheers." he says as you both take a swig.
"hey guys, alex brought a drinking game kate made, wanna play?" mason asks sticking his head through the doorway.
"yeah we're coming." jamie says smiling and finishing his drink. you follow him back into the house and sit side by side around a large board on the living room floor. you sat and listened as kate and alex explained the rules, which were straight forward. roll the dice, move that many spaces and do what the square says. everyone picks a game piece and start. the first round was light only taking a few sips of drinks and a few shots of malibu. needless to say, you were incredibly drunk and probably obviously eye fucking jamie sitting right next to you.
"alright y/n you landed on dare. who do you want to give you the dare?" kate asks you.
"uhm.... trevor." you say not knowing what he was gonna say. he gives alex a smirk and then opens his mouth to speak, "i dare you, to kiss jamie for 30 seconds."
your eyes go wide.
“what?”
"don't 'what' me you've been eye fucking him for the last 10 minutes." he laughs. you look to your right where jamie sat, looking completely unbothered.
"fine." you say climbing lazily into his lap. you place both of your hands on his face and colliding your lips. his hands find there way to your waist as he deepens the kiss, his tongue swiping your bottom lip to open. immediately, you feel your panties soak with moisture. he pats your ass cheek to signal that your time was done. once you separate you take a second to look into his eyes and what you saw was not what you expected from him.
pure lust.
you climb off his lap back into my spot, sitting criss cross quickly and adjust the leggings you’re wearing.
"¡ honestly don't even know what to say." kate laughs and everyone joins. including you and jamie with hesitant laughs as our eyes lock again.
"ok anyways jamie, you got 4." she says and he moves his piece 4 spaces.
"take as many shots as rolled on the dice." he says aloud," how about chug for 5 seconds."
"sure." alex says. jamie grabs onto the neck of the malibu and takes a few decent gulps.
"fuck." he says feeling the effects. as the game continues, the tension between jamie and you had only grown. you’ve scooted closer together and his hand has found his way onto your leg.
"HA I WIN!" mason yells, downing the rest of his drink. everyone stands up to go your separate ways again.
jamie grabs onto your hand and guides you to the empty kitchen. he leans back onto the counter, pulling you with him by your hands. your hands find their way to his chest as you look up into his big blue eyes.
"you can't keep looking at me like that." he says smoothing his hands down your back and stopping on your ass.
"but maybe it's because i want something." you say basically pulling out the puppy dog eyes.
"y/n there's a bunch of people here." he says hesitantly lifting his hand off your ass and directing your gaze to the window.
"and you have a bedroom, with a door that locks." you say patting him on the chest. he sits and stares at you for another moment.
"my fucking god, how can i say no to you?" he says leaning down and connecting your lips again, this time more passionately, knowing that no one is around. after a few moments you hesitantly break the kiss.
"come on let's go hang out with them for a little bit." he says surprisingly.
"jamie please." you beg grabbing fist fulls of his shirt.
"y/n come on, we can go sit out with them while they drink more and then we can go up okay?" he asks brushing a strand up hair out of your face.
"but why can't we just go now?"
"would you just trust me for a second?" he says clearly having an alterier motive.
"okay." you say as he kisses you one more time before guiding you by the small of your back out to the fire pit. he sits down on the loveseat and you go to sit next to him, which he stops you and pulls you onto his lap and jumps into conversation casually. you stare at him like an alien for a moment while his hands so casually rested around your ass. you’re painfully aware of how close you are.
at this point you’re longing for him. you keep shifting on his lap trying to hide the horny bitch you were becoming, while hopefully torturing him in the process. his hands tighten their grip on you
. "go upstairs." he whispers in your ear.
"and say what to them?"
"just say you're going to the bathroom because you don't feel great or something. i'll be up there in five." he replies and you stand up.
"hey guys, i'm gonna head to the bathroom, i'm not feeling great. i may call it a night."
"aw but you're staying over right?" trevor asks.
"yeah yeah, just gonna go maybe take a cold shower or something." you say finally escaping and making your way up the stairs into jamie's room. knowing that jamie would soon be up there for you is already enough to leave your underwear dripping.
you sat anxiously on the bed, picking at your nails waiting for him to walk through the door. a few slow minutes go by and you finally hear the knob turn.
"sorry i kept you waiting love, i told them i was coming to check on you and they just kept trying to get me to stay."
"it's okay, you're here now," you say standing up and walking towards him, wrapping your arms around his neck and pulling him in for a kiss.
"do you know how hard it was for me to control myself with you squirming like that, i could barely keep my dick in line." he says separating your lips.
"i'm sorry, i couldn't help myself. i wanted you so bad."
"now i know we're both drunk but are you sure you wanna do this?" he asks you keeping his hands placed gently on your sides.
"yes of course i do. drunk words are sober thoughts jamie. i've always had a little crush on you." you giggle pressing the side of your head to his chest and hugging onto him.
"come here." he says beckoning you over to the bed, pulling you on top of him as he laid on his back. he connects your lips hungrily as his tongue begs for entry, which is immediately given. you run your hands up his toned chest under his shirt, signaling for him to remove it which he quickly does. you break apart the kiss, sitting up and removing your shirt. he sits up to meet you and connecting your lips again as you feel the bulge in his pants push against you. he groans at the contact.
"fuck i need you jamie." you say growing hornier by the millisecond. hastily, you remove the rest of our outer layer leaving you both only in underwear. he stands looking at you for a few moments before walking over to you, touching your chests together. he runs his fingers gently down your sides, trailing goosebumps behind them.
"you're so gorgeous y/n." he whispers, nuzzling his head in the crook of your neck.
"you're just teasing me at this point jam, please i want you."
"i'm being serious though angel." he says trailing kisses on your jawline.
"come on." you say pulling him by his waist to the bed.
"lay down." he says and you do so. he pulls you by my calves towards the edge of the bed and carefully removes your underwear.
"jamie what are you doing?"
"you've been so gorgeous tonight so i'm all about you." he says kissing your inner thighs leading closer and closer to your core. your breath hitches when his tongue makes immediate, intense contact with your clit making your eyes roll into the back of my head.
"fuck jamie." you moan out, tangling your fingers in his dark locks. his tongue moves in thorough circles before he slips two fingers in unexpectedly making the knot in your stomach tighten harder.
"oh my fucking god." you choke on my words. you knew you were closed based on the ever building ecstasy you felt in my body.
"i'm gonna, i'm-fuck." you say cumming way quicker than you originally expected. he stands up with a wide, lustful smirk on his face and you sit up bringing his face to your, not caring that he was just face deep in your pussy.
"i want you." you say grabbing onto his face as you break apart. you feel him unclasp your bra and you free yourself of it.
"have me." he says, backing away and removing his boxers, stroking his dick a few times. he pulls your legs apart and bends your knees close to your chest. he looks down lining himself up with your entrance and he begins to push in slowly.
"god fuck." you say gripping onto the sheets. you had fucked a few guys but no one near the size of jamie.
"do you want me all the way in or do you need a second?"
"all the way, just wait until i tell you to move."
"whatever you want baby." he says, pushing a significant amount of dick all the way into you.
"you're so big jamie." you say gritting my teeth. he leans over, placing his hands on either side of your head.
"we don't have to do this." he says.
"no no i want to, so bad." you say kissing him desperately again. once you feel comfortable with his size you nod signaling for him to move. he begins thrusting his hips slowly, completely filling you up with each push.
"you feel so good y/n." he says huffing between words. you place your hands on his back as he begins to pick up his speed very slowly. never once had a man ever made you feel the way jamie is making you feel. the euphoric feelings you were experiencing was almost over stimulating. by the time he reaches a quick pace, your nails are digging into his back.
"so so good for me baby." he says continuing his pace yet kissing you so lovingly.
"oh my god jamie i'm close." your voice comes out in a whisper close to his ear.
"yeah that's my girl right there." he says, somehow deepening his thrusts sending your eyes shooting into the back of my head. your walls begin to clench around him knowing you would be reaching your second climax very soon.
"oh fuck fuck." you say finally releasing the built up pressure in my abdomen.
"i'm almost there." he says fucking you right through my orgasm, moments later feeling his warm seed spilling into you.
"fuck oh my god." you say as he lays down on your chest, staying inside of you. he kisses up your chest up to your lips leaving a smile on your face. he pulls out and grabs all of your clothes off the floor, tossing them into his hamper.
"let me get you cleaned up and grab you some clean clothes." he says kissing you on the cheek before going into his bathroom to soak a rag with warm water to wipe you clean.
you lean up to go dig into your bag that was coincidentally already in his room and he stops you.
"no stay there, ill get it." he says digging into your bag, grabbing only your spare underwear before digging into his drawers for a pair of his boxers and a t-shirt. he hands them to you one by one as you put them on.
"so beautiful." he says, sounding completely sober, knowing he's not. you blush at his words, still buzzing from the alcohol.
"what are you gonna tell everyone?" you ask getting under his covers.
"i'm gonna go tell them you were sick so i helped you shower and put you in bed so im gonna stay in here with you."
"oh, okay." you smile not expecting him to want to stay up here with you.
"i'll be right back okay? get comfortable." he says shutting the door behind him. a few short minutes later he returns to his room smiling.
"you didn't tell anyone did you?"
"no no don't worry. they think it's sweet that i want to help you."
"well you didn't help me in the way they think." you wink at him and he laughs, joining you in bed. he pulls you over to lay on his chest as you sat in silence for a few moments.
"so what now?" you ask quietly.
"what do you mean?"
"is this just a fuck and done thing or like what's next?" you repeat.
"y/n, i like you. my feelings for you have grown by miles tonight." he says rubbing his hand up and down your back underneath the shirt. all you can do is lean up and smile at him.
"you like me?" you giggle.
"yeah i do." he smiles back.
"prove it." you say with a fake attitude. he gently pulls you by your chin and kisses you deeply.
"was that enough proof for you?" he laughs.
"i think so." you blush, "i like you a lot too by the way."
"prove it." he says mocking you and you roll my eyes, locking your lips with his, your hand placed delicately on his cheek.
"was that enough proof for you?" you reply mocking him this time nuzzling your head into his neck.
"¡ would say yes." he replies holding you closer as you drift off into a peaceful sleep together for the first time.

115 AC
On the second day of August, in the year 115 AC, the worst storm in a hundred years swept through King’s Landing. Ships smashed against each other in the harbor, livelihoods and people being whisked away by the tossing waves. The maesters — or the bolder ones anyway — whispered that the gods were unhappy with the Westeros, or specifically, with the ruling family. But those whispers were silenced almost immediately, for this was King’s Landing after all, the very seat of Targaryen power.
Rhaenyra Targaryen watched the storm from her window, one hand braced against each wall, her face being bathed by the pounding rain. Her maids had begged to close the shutters to conserve some of the warmth in her room, but she would not have. Her labors had been ongoing for nearly a full day, and only the sound of the wind and the cool spray of the rain could calm her as she breathed through the pain. From her spot high above the city, she could see clay tiles being ripped from their roofs, and in some places entire buildings were collapsing. It shouldn’t have been calming, but it was a welcome distraction and a stark reminder of her place in this world.
“Please, Princess,” her midwife pleased with her. “You must keep warm.”
“I am plenty warm!” Rhaenyra snapped, “and I will stay where I damn please.” As if summoned by her anger, another painful contraction rippled through her abdomen.
She could hear the midwife turn to one of her maids, beseeching the woman to find her husband. Rhaenyra let out a scoff. Since they had returned from their yearlong sojourn to Dragonstone, during which time she had entertained her uncle Daemon and his wife, Laenor had taken to spending time with one of the knights of the house. He was no uncaring nor unfeeling, but she doubted he felt any guilt about sheltering elsewhere in the city while his wife labored.
A door opened behind her. “The Queen wishes for news of the Princess.”
Rhaenyra groaned loudly, feeling the child move lower. She could hear her maid speaking in hushed tones to the intruder, assuring her of the steady progress of the birth. It didn’t feel steady. In fact, it felt rather like being torn in two.
A heavy gust of wind pelted her face, and she found she could breathe easier under the onslaught. It was a necessary distraction from the conversation happening behind her, which was in itself an echo of the same conversation that had been happening every hour on the hour for the past day. She should have expected it. Alicent had been even more of a presence when Rhaenyra had labored with Jace, insisting that her own maids be present to ‘assist the Princess’. It had been for that very reason that, following the birth of her son, Rhaenyra had withdrawn her family to Dragonstone. But there would be no escaping Alicent this time.
Something smashed against the stone walls, and Rhaenyra screamed as another contraction hit her. She was not made for this. What did it say about her, that she was bringing her child into the world on such a day?
Queen Alicent Hightower paced in her chambers, bundled in a fur as the fire roared to keep the chill of the wind out of her room. The windows in her rooms had been boarded up immediately after the King’s, and she had ordered her children be brought to her. They played on the floor now, Aegon with a small collection of wooden knights, and Aemond and Helaena looking over a book of insects.
The Hand of the King, Lord Otto Hightower, sat at her desk, putting pen to a stack of letters that had amassed in the past week. They both turned when the doors opened and Alicent’s maid, Talya, stepped inside.
“The Princess’ labors are nearly finished,” Talya announced. “The midwife expects the babe within the hour.”
Alicent picked at her fingernail. “Have it brought to me and the King as soon as possible,” she ordered, “so that we might offer our congratulations.”
Talya curtsied and left the room.
Congratulations were far from Alicent’s mind, thought she knew her husband, who was sequestered in his own rooms to work on his model, would be anxious to see his grandchild. Alicent, too, was not without sympathy for the Princess, who had returned from her months away heavily pregnant and now labored alone in her chambers. But the birth of Rhaenyra’s first son had all but confirmed rumors of adultery, and Alicent was anxious to see if the second would lend further proof to the theory.
“I wish she had summoned a maester,” she said, half to herself. “So we might trust she is in good hands.”
“Her first son arrived without issue,” Otto said, seeming bored with his daughter’s worry. “Put it from your mind.”
But how could she? Rhaenyra’s child it might be, and Jacaerys too, but Alicent could not, by the light of the Seven or her own love for her own children, see a bastard seated on the throne. But that did not mean she wished for Rhaenyra to suffer in childbirth.
“Will the dragons be alright in the storm, mother?” It took her a moment to realize who had spoken. Aemond, her third child, looked up from his book, eyes shining in concern for the creatures he loved more than anything. Aemond was…a soft child, though she knew it delighted her husband to see him so enamored with the dragons and his Targaryen heritage. Alicent struggled to imagine a place for Aemond if Rhaenyra’s children were to succeed the throne, soft and sensitive as he was.
“They have survived far more difficult storms than this,” she assured him. “They will be fine.”
Aemond gave her a relieved smile, flipping the page for Helaena.
“What do you care?” Aegon sneered. “You don’t even have one.”
“I have an egg!” Aemond protested.
“It’ll never hatch,” Aegon laughed.
Aemind stood and ran from the room, tears already brimming in his eyes. Alicent sighed, moving to go after him. Some version of this argument was a near weekly occurrence between her two sons, and she struggled to decide if it was childish rivalry or if it represented something deeper.
“Let him be, Daughter,” Otto cautioned. “Boys must work through these things on their own.”
The urge to comfort her son already fading, Alicent resumed her pacing. She needed to be ready when news of the birth came. Through the cracks in her boarded up window, she could see rolling gray clouds in the distance.
Prince Aemond had managed to stop crying by the time he emerged from the tunnels and into the Princess’ Tower. He knew there were many passageways in the castle, but he was only aware of the ones that led from his room, as they afforded him the opportunity to seek out his freedom, and to hide his tears. He was embarrassed to admit, event at the tender age of five, how often he wept behind these cold stone walls.
It wasn’t fair how Aegon treated him, and it wasn’t fair that he had a dragon. Aegon might love Sunfyre, but he didn’t love dragons the way that Aemond did. He didn’t pour over stories of Old Valyria, trying to learn things that seemed impossible for a boy of his age. He deserved a dragon. He was ready for it.
Even Helaena, who did not have a dragon, had her love of science and bugs and all crawling things. It wasn’t proper, or terribly interesting to Aemond, but at least she had something. The only thing he had ever really loved or wanted, continued to be out of his reach.
He hadn’t meant to come to the Princess’ Tower, but it seemed to be the one place in the Red Keep with any type of activity. His mother usually forbade the children from playing here, wanting to keep them far away from his elder half-sister for some reason he didn’t quite understand. And if he wasn’t going to be allowed to go outside and see the dragons, which his mother had strictly forbidden, then he must find entertainment elsewhere.
Two maids scurried past his hiding place. “The babe is here, but the Princess has asked us to delay so that she might compose herself.”
This interested Aemond. He knew that his mother had ordered the babe to be brought to her immediately, though he didn’t understand why. Surely a babe was still a babe an hour after its birth as much as a few minutes? But the babe was here, and he was here, which meant he might get a chance to see his new niece or nephew before his mother and Aegon did.
His mind made up, he ducked out from behind the tapestry and marched up the stairs to his half-sister’s chambers, knocking sharply on the door. The chatter inside fell to silence, and he listened as a pair of footsteps moved toward the door.
A maid answered. “Prince Aemond?” She curtsied through her confusion. “Whatever are you doing here?”
“I wish to see the babe,” he declared, trying not to look like a little boy who had been crying not too long ago.
“My Prince, this is a birthing chamber, and it is not—”
“He may enter,” his half-sister’s voice carried, and it was all the invitation he needed to push around the maid (rather rudely, as his septa would tell him) and into the room.
Rhaenyra’s chambers were confusing to him. The window was wide open, and the sounds of the storm and a wicket chill swept into the room. Someone had stacked blankets at the base of the window to soak up all the rain coming through. Despite this, the fire was roaring in its hearth, nearly suffocating in its heat. Two women he had never seen before were rolling blankets stained with crimson into a bundle, while another was dumping red-tinged water from a metal tub out of the window. He blinked in confusion. That was more blood than he had ever seen in his life, even more than when Aegon had broken his nose with a practice sword.
His half-sister was reclined on her bed, propped up by pillows, a bundle of blankets in her arms.
“Are you injured, sister?” He asked, creeping forward and trying not to think of the blood. He might not be overly close with his half-sister, as she was much older and not liked by his mother, but he did not like to see anyone hurt.
“No more than is expected, Aemond,” she said, not exactly warmly, but with a fresh dose of kindness that made his press a bit closer. He thought she looked exhausted, and her hair hung in sweaty mats about his face. Perhaps it was very difficult to have a baby, if it made such a mess. “Would you like to meet your niece?”
“A niece?” he moved forward, drawn by his curiosity. “It’s not a boy then.” A shame, for he would rather have liked a new playmate.
“No,” Rhaenyra laughed. “But rather a beautiful little girl. And you may be the first to meet her.”
Aemond wrinkled his nose. “Is she like Helaena? I like her well enough, but she talks often of bugs.”
She laughed again, a bit more brightly. “She is too little to have interests yet, Aemond. She does not even have a name.”
A person with no name? Somehow, that was utterly fascinating to Aemond, and he boldly leaned over the bed, trying to peek at the bundle in Rhaenyra’s arms. He could not imagine a world in which he was not Aemond, and this little baby did not even have a name of her own.
“Here she is,” Rhaenyra smiled down at the bundle, before lifting it to where Aemond could see.
His mouth dropped open as he beheld the tiny babe. He had expected an ugly, messy thing, and while she might be a bit wrinkly, and slightly blue, she was absolutely perfect. Small enough that he could have easily lifted her, with slick silver hair plastered to her head, and a tiny white hand curled into a little fist. He was reminded of depictions of the Mother in the Sept, who was often shown cradling a small, impossibly beautiful baby.
“She’s pretty,” he said finally, though even he knew the word did not nearly suffice. “She doesn’t look like Jace.”
“No, she doesn’t,” Rhaenyra sounded a bit sad. “But I love her nonetheless.”
The baby cooed, and her tiny eyes blinked open, revealing a stunning shade of lavender more beautiful than anything Aemond had ever seen. She shuddered and stretched, her tiny, bird-like limbs shaking with the effort. Instantly, Aemond was flooded with worry for this little creature. How frightening it must be, to come into the world and meet so many strangers, all while a dreadful storm wailed outside. He wanted to keep her far from the world, to demand that his half-sister bar the windows and keep her locked away, warm and safe.
But that wouldn’t be fair to the babe. Aemond knew all too well what it felt like to be suffocated within stone walls, and this little one deserved to see everything. When she was bigger, he could take her to the dragon pit, where she might watch the dragons train with him. Perhaps she would enjoy hearing stories of Old Valyria, and he worried that he may not know them well enough to do them justice. But those thoughts were overcrowded by fear. They were plans for tomorrow, when this little bird did not, to him, look strong enough to last the day.
“She’s too little,” he protested. “Will she be alright?”
“She’ll be alright,” Rhaenyra promised. “But she might need to be protected and helped while she is still small. Could you…help me do that, Aemond?”
Aemond studied the babe for a long moment. “Mother said it is a bad omen for her to be born during a storm.”
Rhaenyra frowned. The babe kicked her legs, and Aemond boldly reached forward to tuck the blanket back around her.
“But I don’t think she’s right,” he admitted. “She’s like a little sunbeam on a cloudy day.”
Perhaps the little boy did not mean to be so poetic, but his words filled Rhaenyra’s heart with a little bit of hope. It was true that the babe did not look like Jace, for they did not share a father, but she was the picture of a Targaryen beauty. No one could deny that she was Rhaenyra’s, or that she was perfect. She was a worthy reward for such a difficult labor. Not even Aemond, it seemed.
“You know Aemond,” she began cautiously. “She does not yet have a name. Might you have a suggestion?”
“Me?” He was shocked. “What about Ser Laenor?”
“He isn’t here,” Rhaenyra’s voice was harsh. “Come, we mustn’t let this little one linger without a name of her own for much longer.”
That did seem to be a terrible injustice, in Aemond’s opinion. He struggled to think of a name as perfect as the little creature in front of him. It would have to be a Valyrian name, he decided, for she deserved one, and it would have to be beautiful and unique, only to her. He was struck by the realization that this was the most important thing he had ever done.
“What about Aelinor?” He suggested shyly.
Rhaenyra smiled, looking down on her baby. “I think that is perfect. Will you help my little Aelinor, Aemond? When the world is harsh and cruel, might she have you to lean on?”
Aemond could not imagine the world ever being cruel to little Aelinor — his Aelinor, he decided — but he made the promise anyway.
“I swear,” he said earnestly, vowing not only to himself, not to his half-sister, but to the precious thing in her arms. He lifted his hand and gently stroked one finger along her tiny arm, the skin impossibly soft and delicate beneath his touch. “I’ll become the strongest dragon rider in the world, so that I can protect you. I swear it.”
And for those few minutes, before news reached the Queen, Rhaenyra felt that the world might not have been as harsh as she knew it to be. Her daughter was healthy and beautiful, and already she was winning hearts. Little Aelinor was exactly what Aemond had said, a spot of sun on a dark day, and she was loved.
No one could ever have imagined that in the years and wars to come, it was tiny Aelinor, and her sworn protector, who would shape the future of House Targaryen.
119 AC
At the age of four, Princess Aelinor Velaryon ruled over the Red Keep like a little queen. Though not one for barking orders — she was both too meek and too shy for that — she found the castle filled with those resolved to fulfill her every whim. Never in her short life had she known a moment’s hardship, for such inconveniences were kept fiercely away by those who loved her.
Her mother, the Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, doted on her only daughter, even as she brought a second son into the world. Her daughter was the perfect image of her mother, in looks if not in temperament, and Rhaenyra was determined to keep her under her wing for as long as possible. The motives could not be entirely unselfish, for Aelinor alone of Rhaenyra’s children bore the look of a true Targaryen, and contributed heavily to the preservation of Rhaenyra’s reputation.
The Lord Laenor Velaryen, the girl’s father, found himself rather at odds with what to do with the girl. Though she did not resemble him in the slightest, he found her sweet, and reminded him of a calmer, meeker Laena. The reminder of his sister was enough to generate some fondness in his heart for the child, if it could not be called a true fatherly love. He did not spend much time with the girl (or indeed any of his children), but he made sure to always bring the child a bauble from his travels, and offer her a story should she ask.
King Viserys, her grandfather, doted on the child, whom he found to be the perfect image of his late wife, Aemma, and even Her Majesty the Queen could not find it in herself to hate the child. Not when little Aelinor so often looked up to Queen Alicent and declared her ‘beautiful like a faerie’.
The only true hardship in Princess Aelinor’s life came from her brothers, the Princes Jacaerys and Lucerys Velaryon. Luc was young, and so it was most often Jace who took to bullying the young girl. It was difficult to say why, and perhaps that was why their mother did so little to stop it. It might simply have been the way of things with siblings, for Rhaenyra had none of her own. But many in the curt whispered that the boys had far darker motivations for taunting and teasing the little girl, even if the children themselves were unaware.
When Jacaerys pushed Aelinor from her chair so that he might sit next to the King, the court whispered ‘it is because she has the look of a Targaryen, and the boy does not’. And when Luc pulled her hair, they suggested that his jealously moved him to hurt the girl.
Aelinor loved her brothers though, and were she a little stronger or a little bigger, she would have teased them right back. She knew her brothers would never hurt her, not truly, and so she did not let herself be too bothered by their harassment.
Aelinor remained a happy child, through and through, in large part due to her best friend, for there was no one in the court, nor in her family, as devoted to her happiness as her beloved Aemond. On any given day, one could expect to see the young prince following behind the little princess like an ever-faithful shadow, quick to pick her up should she fall, to wipe away her tears, and fight her battles for her. For all the rumors of rifts between the factions of House Targaryen, their loyalty to each other seemed to bridge the gap of familial animosity.
“Aemond,” Aelinor said eagerly. “Can you tell me what you see?”
They were hiding in the rafters, in a space normally reserved for servants lighting chandeliers, spying on the feast and dancing taking place in the great hall below. It was Prince Aegon’s eleventh name day, and the dancing was expected to last right into the night. Aemond had been forced to attend for the first few hours, but had managed to sneak away and find Aelinor, who had been too young to be invited. Now they were hidden behind a wall on the upper level, Aemond tall enough to peer over and Aelinor trying to stand on her toes.
Aemond considered his answer. “What would you like to hear about? The dancing or the food?”
“The dancing!” She exclaimed. “Is it like in the stories?”
He knew which stories she was referring to. Aemond spent much of his time regaling Aelinor with the stories of Old Valyria, and while she loved tales of dragons and spells as much as he did (though he did tend to leave out some of the gorier details of blood magic), it was the great romances that really captured her young mind.
“The ladies are all spinning around, and their dresses are very fine,” he said. “And I can see that all of the lords are very much in love with them.”
Truthfully, he could only really see his mother, who danced with her uncle in the middle of the nearly-empty dancefloor. The hired musicians now played over the sound of drunken revelries, most of the guests draped over taples with tankards of ale in their hands. All of the other children had left by now, including Aegon, who had arrogantly boasted that he would stay up all night for his party. He also couldn’t see Princess Rhaenyra  But Aelinor didn’t need to know any of that.
“I wish I could be down there,” the girl sighed, spinning around so that the edges of her bedrobe twirled outward. “I could meet a handsome prince.”
Aemond turned from watching the party, smiling down at her as she spun about. “Am I not handsome enough for you, Lina?”
Aelinor stopped then, looking very serious. “You’re the most handsome, even more handsome than your brothers or mine, or any of the princes in the stories.”
Aemond grinned. That was what he loved best about Aelinor. Even at the age of four, he knew without a doubt that she meant everything she said with every fibre of her being. As far as he knew, she had never even told a lie to anyone. She just loved and loved with her entire heart, and he felt grateful that she shared even a small piece of it with him.
“Come then, if you wish it, we shall dance,” he held out a hand, leading her through a clumsy imitation of one of the dances he had seen earlier. Aelinor held her skirt up with one hand and he whirled her around, careful not to let her trip over her dress.
“What’s your favorite part of the stories, Aemond?” She asked him, swaying from side to side.
He answered honestly. “I like the dragons. I like hearing about the bond between dragons and their riders, and how they became heroes and legends.” He was filled with a great sadness then, for her did not have a dragon of his own. Aelinor did, her little egg had hatched shortly after her birth, though she was too young to have done more than pet the hatchling.
“You’ll be the best dragon rider ever,” Aelinor promised. “I just know it.”
He didn’t doubt that she believed it.
“Do you want to know my favorite part, Aemond?” She asked, giggling as he swayed her from side to side.
“Of course, Lina.”
She sighed dramatically. “I like the happy endings, when the heroes bring their princesses a troven.”
“It’s a token, Lina,” he smiled. “And yes, I know you love the happy endings.” He was prone to adding happy endings to all his stories, knowing how much she loved them.
“Come now, it is time to get you to bed.” It was well past her bedtime, and Aelinor did not protest as he took her hand and returned her to her family.
Early the next morning, Alicent walked into her sitting room to find Aemond digging through one of her jewelry boxes.
“Aemond, whatever are you doing?” She glanced briefly at the breakfast table, where Aegon was slathering a fruit spread on a piece of bread, but chose to take nothing for herself.
Aemond didn’t reply, setting a gold chain to the side and continuing to dig. “Just looking for something.”
“Hm,” Alicent hummed. “Did you have fun with Aelinor last night?”
“Yes, we watched some of the dancing.”
His brother laughed, but Aemond chose to ignore it. He now had a selection of jewels set next to him on the table, and was continuing his hunt.
“Why are you laughing, Aegon?” Alicent asked.
Aegon snorted. “I just think it’s funny that Aemond hangs out with babies rather than acting like a man.”
This was rather funny, especially coming from a boy as flippant and juvenile as Aegon, but Alicent couldn’t deny that the thought had occured to her as well. Aemond was nearly nine, and his closest companion was a little girl of four. Aemond was already an odd child, and it didn’t bode well for him to be so distanced from his peers.
“Aelinor isn’t a baby, she’s special,” Aemond declared, spinning to face his mother, holding his palm outstretched. “Mother, may I have this.”
Balanced on his palm was a large sapphire, too large for him to close his fist around. It was roughly cut, and had been given to the Queen for her to choose its cut and setting herself, but she had never gotten around to it, preferring emerald tones over sapphire.
“For what?” She asked.
A red flush stained Aemond’s cheeks, and Alicent did not even need to hear his reply. “Are you sure, Aemond? That is a very large gem, and she’s very little.”
Aemond held it tightly in his fingers. “Please. She loves treasure.”
That was a gross underestimation of Aemond’s motivations. Yes, Aelinor did love treasure as much as any little princess, but the truth was, her sleepy mumblings about heroes and tokens had rattled around his brain all night. She had called him a handsome prince, and he felt he needed to do something to earn it.
“Please?” He repeated.
Alicent considered her next words carefully. On one hand, she did not want the court to hear of her passing a gift of such value to the Princess Rhaenyra’s family. Or rather, she did not want her father to hear of it. But she had no real attachment to the stone, having already forgotten which visiting lord or lady had gifted it to her, and it might serve to address what she saw as the larger concern.
“Very well,” Aemond’s face erupted in glee, “but you must make me a promise.”
“Anything!” He exclaimed.
“From now on, you will join Aegon for his morning lessons. That means with the maesters some days, and in the training yard on others.”
“What?”
“Why?” Aegon demanded.
Alicent held up a hand to silence both of her sons. “You’re not as little as you were, Aemond. This is important.”
“But Aelinor —”
“Aelinor must also study with her Septas,” Alicent said. “Do I have your agreement?”
Aemond looked a bit dejected, but nodded slowly. “I promise.”
“Well, I don’t even want him to train with me!”
The next day Aelinor had to hunt for Aemond throughout the castle. He wasn’t waiting outside her door when she awoke, nor was he in the library, picking out a new story for her. It took her nearly an hour to find him in the most unlikely of places.
He was testing out the different practice swords, trying to see which felt the least foreign in his hand, when Aelinor emerged on the walkway above the training yard. Ser Harwin Strong lifted her easily, carrying her down the steps and setting her down on a flat stone. His efforts were futile, for she immediately leapt off and splashed through the mud to reach Aemond.
“Are you going to learn to fight, Aemond?” She asked, excited. “Can I learn too?
The thought was ridiculous, but Aemond didn’t laugh. “When you are bigger, Lina, I promise.” He couldn’t bear the thought of her being injured, so this was one of the few instances in which he had no choice but to refuse her.
“Alright,” she sighed. “Can I stay and watch?”
Aemond was suddenly embarrassed at the thought of her watching him train. He would not be very good, and he couldn’t bear for Aelinor to think any less of him. The sapphire hung heavy in his pocket, and he was thankful for the distraction.
“Not today, Lina. But I have a gift for you.”
“A gift?” She bounced on her toes. The hem of her lilac dress was already stained with mud, but her silver hair was tied back neatly back with a ribbon. Her whole frame shook as she bounced in anticipation. “What is it?”
Aemond pulled the sapphire out of his pocket, unwrapping the silk handkerchief he had used to cover it. “This is for you. Just like from the stories.”
Aelinor’s gasp was almost comical as she took in the stone. “For me?”
“Yes,” Aemond said, letting her take it in her small hands. She had to grip it with both hands to hold it, the gem ridiculously large for her. “But you must be very careful with it, alright?”
Aelinor stared at it for a moment longer. In the morning light the gem reflected a ripple of cerulean blue across her palms, and she felt she could have wasted away the day studying it. Suddenly she leapt forward to wrap Aemond in a hug. “Thank you, thank you!” She cried. “It is the best thing in the world.”
Aemond squeezed her back. “I am glad you like it. “Now go, we both have lessons.”
Aelinor gave him one last squeeze, before turning to stomp back to her waiting Kingsguard. Aemond just smiled, pleased with himself.
That evening, Aelinor sat in front of the hearth in her mother’s chambers, half-listening as her brothers recounted their day, but mostly studying the sapphire in her hands. Her mother had been astonished to see the magnitude of the gift she had received, but she had not taken it away.
“Boys, stay here with Aelinor. I have something to discuss with your father.” Rhaenyra disappeared into the next room.
Jace squatted down next to his sister, pointing at the stone. “What’s that?”
“It’s my token!” Aelinor exclaimed.
“It’s pretty,” Luc was on her other side.
“I know!” Aelinor beamed. “Aemond gave it to me. It’s just like the treasures from the stories and I—”
Jace interrupted her. “Aemond? You let him give you a gift?” Unlike his younger siblings, Jace wasn’t entirely unaware of the whispers that followed him at court. And he was more than aware that while he dealt with sideways glances and whispers, he knew that Aelinor was largely immune to those comments. That spark of jealousy colored his relationship with his sister, sometimes overclouding his love for her with envy.
Aelinor was confused by his question. Why shouldn’t Aemond give her a gift? He was her Aemond after all. But Jace’s question made her worry. Perhaps she needed to give him a gift in return. But what did she have that was as wonderful as this?
“Aemond isn’t our friend, Aelinor,” Jace cautioned. “You can’t trust him.”
“Aemond is my friend,” Aelinor countered, her faith in him steadfast. “He just doesn’t like you.”
All of a sudden, Luc snatched the gem out of her hand, holding it away from her reach. “It’s so blue!”
“Let me see it, Luc,” Jace took it, holding it near the fire to see it better.
“Give it back!” Aelinor sprung to her feet. “It isn’t yours! It’s mine!”
“Why should you get a gift like this, and from Aemond of all people?” Jace, who thought himself much older and wiser, tried to reason with his sister. “You cannot keep it.”
“I can! He gave it to me!” Aelinor jumped to reach it, nearly tripping over her skirts.
“I’m sorry, sister. But this is for the best. “And Jace, with the type of carelessness that only a boy can muster, tossed the sapphire into the fire.
Aelinor wailed. “You stupid, stupid boy! Aemond gave that to me!” She beat at his side with her little fists.
Jace pushed her off, sending her stumbling to the floor. “It’s just a trinket, Aelinor. We can find you another one. A better one.”
But Aelinor already knew in her heart that there would never be a better gift than the one Aemond had given her. She pushed onto her knees and crawled closer to the fire, sniffling as she watched the flames lick at the blue gem. Already black was creeping up the edges, marring its beautiful surface. Aemond had given her that gift because he loved, she knew it. And she wasn’t going to let her brother’s jealousy take it away.
New determination flowing through her veins, Aelinor reached forward into the fire, and grasped the gem firmly in her hand.
Her screams echoed through the hall of the keep.
Aemond was reading by candlelight, just beginning to nod off when a pounding began at his door. A thousand things occurred to him as he scrambled from his bed. It could be his mother, angry that he was still awake, or it could be something more serious, such as a fire or an attack of some kind.
He had scarcely set his feet on the floor when the door burst open, and he was surprised to see not only his mother there, looking very perturbed in her nightgown and robe, but also Ser Harwin Strong, the Kingsguard to the Princess Rhaenyra.
“Aemond,” his mother sighed. “I’m sorry, but there was no helping it.”
“No helping what, mother?” Aemond was concerned. Was that sweat on Ser Harwin’s brow? “Is there a fire?”
“No, child. There has been an…unfortunate accident.”
“What do you—”
Ser Harwin interrupted. “The Princess Aelinor has been grievously injured, and she calls for you. Her mother hoped you might calm her, so that she might let the maesters—”
Aemond was already pushing past them, running down the stairs as fast as his bare feet could carry him. Aelinor, injured? He could not imagine what might have happened, his thoughts already filled with the most horrible images. He should have been there, should have protected her. And where were her parents, her brothers, her guards? What were they doing that allowed her to be hurt?
He could hear Ser Harwin rushing behind him, but he did not stop to look. He just ran down the familiar corridors and began climbing the steps to the chambers the Princess Rhaenyra occupied with her family. No sooner had his foot landed on the bottom step of the tower that the most horrible wailing reached his ears.
“Aelinor!” She shouted, rushing up the steps and bursting into the room. He shoved past a crowd of maesters and Aelinor’s own parents and brothers, ignoring the rudeness of his arrival. Rhaenyra looked close to tears, her sons just as distraught, but Aemond only had eyes for Aelinor.
She sat on a divan, wilted against one side, her hand cradled in her lap. She was still wearing her beautiful, mud-covered dress from that morning, though the dirt had now dried into dust that flaked onto the velvet furniture. She was sobbing: great, heaving sobs that shook her entire body with the effort, letting out alternatively loud wails or soft moans of pain.
“Lina!” he exclaimed, dropping to his knees next to her. “What’s happened?”
She wailed louder, and he saw that she was gripping something in her little hand. The skin that he could see, mainly the sides and back of her hand, was a frightening shade of bright red, as though she’d left it out in the sun for too long.
“She wasn’t supposed to go after it,” Jace said. “She just reached right in!”
“What did she reach for, Jace?” Rhaenyra demanded. “You were supposed to watch her!”
Aemond ignored them, carefully lifting a hand to brush away the flood of tears. A maester knelt on her other side. “Young Prince, we need to let us see her hand. We fear she had been grievously burned.”
Burned? His Aelinor?
He spun his gaze around, zeroing on Jace. Little Luc clung to his brother’s shirt, tears running down his face. The nerve of him to cry, when his sister was suffering so.
“What have you done?” He demanded. “Why did you hurt her?”
“She was the one stupid enough to reach into a fireplace for a dumb jewel!” Jace spat back.
“Jewel? What jewel?” Ser Laenor asked, and his wife began to explain.
Aemond felt a feeling of dread come over him as he realized what Aelinor was holding so tightly in her hand. What she had hurt herself for. He leaned close, wrapping one arm around her shoulders. “I’m so sorry, Lina. Does it hurt terribly?”
She gave a pathetic nod, and he resisted the urge to cry. This was his fault, after all. He had given her the sapphire, and she had scarred herself just to save it from the fire.
“Lina,” he whispered. “Please, you must let them help.”
Her lip quivered. “Make it stop hurting, Aemond.”
He hated himself for being unable to grant her wish. It made him want to turn around and punch Jace, and even little Luc, for putting her through this. It was their teasing and tormenting of her that had led to this, he was sure of it.
“Open your hand, Lina,” he coaxed. “And once they’ve taken care of you, I’ll tell you a new story, alright?”
That seemed motivation enough, and he moved to sit beside her, taking her uninjured hand in his as the maesters worked quickly to uncurl her burned fingers. Aelinor whimpered as the sapphire dropped to the floor, and Aemond felt like vomiting when he saw the mess left behind. A melted mass of burned skin and liquid flesh, her fingers curling in as if to protect the wound from the air. As soon as it was exposed, Aelinor began to cry anew, and Aemond drew her face into his shoulders.
“It will be alright, Lina,” he promised, even though he didn’t think it would be. “I’ll take care of you.”
Aelinor didn’t respond. She just clung to Aemond’s side and sobbed as they applied a salve and a bandage to her ruined hand. Both her mother and father came forward to try and comfort her, but any attempt to pry her away from Aemond only led to more tears.
Aelinor whispered something, and Aemond leaned down to hear it.
“Am I going to be ugly now, Aemond?” She said quietly.
“Never,” he swore. “You are as beautiful as ever, and no one could ever do anything to change that.” That, at least, he was sure of.
She seemed to take a little comfort in that, and Aemond worked with the maesters to convince her to drink some milk of the poppy. She fell asleep, slumped against Aemond’s side, her hand an unidentifiable mass of bandages.
“Thank you, Prince Aemond,” Ser Laenor said, gently placing a hand on the boy’s shoulder. “I will take her to bed now.”
Aemond wanted to protest, but while he might be strong enough to carry Aelinor playful around the castle, he could not move her without jostling her. Instead, he carefully passed her to her father, and stood from the sofa as she was carried away. He wanted to insist that someone stay with her through the night, but movement at the side of the room drew his attention away.
Rhaenyra had collapsed into a chair at the table, Jace and Luc sitting beside her. In Luc’s hand was the blackened sapphire they had pried from Aelinor’s grasp.
“You…you bastards!” Aemond shouted, walking up and snatching the jewel from him. “I gave this to Aelinor, not to you!”
“Boys, there is no need for—” Rhaenyra started.
“Who are you to give our sister gifts? You’re just trying to…trying to..” Jace struggled for words. “To turn her against us!”
“I’m not! I—” Aemond caught himself before he said I love her. “It doesn’t matter. You stole from her, and you hurt her, and I won’t ever forgive you for it.”
“Enough!” Rhaenyra stood. “Jace, take Luc and go to your room. I’ll be in to speak with you in a minute.”
Aemond watched as they walked away, scowling all the while. Only once the door had closed behind them did Rhaenyra turn to him.
“Thank you, Aemond,” she said sincerely. “I did not say it earlier, but you were a great comfort to Aelinor, and a great help to us all tonight.”
He did not think that his mother would enjoy hearing that he had been a ‘great help’ to his half-sister, nor was he particularly endeared to her at the moment. It was on her watch that Lina had been injured, after all. “I did it for Lina.” And not for you.
“I know you did, but I am grateful all the same.” Rhaenyra sighed. “She will be very unwell in the coming days. Can I trust that you will be there to help?”
It was a silly question. When, in all the days since Aelinor had been born, had Aemond not been there? Short of prying him from her side and locking him up, there would be nothing anyone could do to keep him away from his little princess.
Aemond looked down at the jewel in his palm, rubbing some of the soot away with his finger. “Can she have her jewel back? I picked it just for her. I didn’t mean for her to be hurt.” It wasn’t quite an admission of guilt, and indeed, no one could accuse him of being at fault save himself, but Rhaenyra could see that it already weighed heavy on the boy.
Rhaenyra held out her hand, and he obediently placed the sapphire in her palm. “Not only may she keep it, but I shall have it placed in a setting, so that she might carry it easier.”
That sounded perfectly agreeable to Aemond, and he nodded. “Very well. Then I shall look after Aelinor.” He did not say because you cannot, but the thought was in his mind. He had trusted Aelinor to the care of her mother and brothers, and now she was hurt. It would never have happened on his watch. He wouldn’t have allowed it.
“May I ask one more favor of you, Ameond?”
He gave a slight nod.
Rhaenyra took a deep breath, as if debating whether or not to speak. “Please don’t call my boys bastards. It cuts deeper than you know.”
Aemond did not agree, or disagree, he simply cast one last longing glance at Aelinor’s door, and then left the room, determined to return in the morning with an armful of sweets for his princess.
Years later, Rhaenyra would wonder if that was the first day the lines were drawn between their families. When she inadvertently handed Aemond Targaryen the words with which to wound her own children. But at the time, she knew only that he cared deeply for her daughter, and she hoped and prayed that it would be enough to preserve this tender peace.

"The first thing they see - apart from Captain Bonnet himself, all silked up and frilly and I sight in his own right - is the cat sitting primly by his ankles."
writing is top quality, the depth of understanding the author has for every character is unmatched. i have never felt so gutted to know a writer hasn't written anything else for ofmd.

"After an accident upends Stede and Ed's fragile new relationship, Ed fights to bring Stede back."

"Ed has a simple life. He has a self-built, off grid, mostly self-sustaining house tucked away in the middle of a forest... the appearance of an incredibly nosy, incredibly handsome stranger three weekends in a row has him questioning every self-imposed rule he's ever set himself."
this is really a story about healing and hope and grief and love. one of my most favourite eds. this author makes me want to change my whole life, and in this case become an off grid chicken owner that grows food and has gay christmas dinners.

20k (technically just under but it gets a pass because everyone should read it rn), teen and up
"Stede takes a job as a remote forest fire lookout in the summer following his divorce, with a plan to find out who he is, and what he wants his life to be. With the help of the enigmatic lookout on the other side of the forest, he ends up getting more out of the experience than he could ever have hoped."
when will this author receive their nobel prize in literature. i want to be a fire lookout now. i also want to scream and cry and maybe stare at the ceiling for five hours to process this fic. there is a reason everyone loves this fic.

"Edward Teach is one of the most famous chefs in the world, working under the handle Chef Blackbeard. Not one to be tied down, he does random pop-ups in all types of kitchens, and for the absurdly wealthy, he caters special events. Stede Bonnet wants to throw the best engagement party ever for his ex-wife and best friend, Mary. His assistant recommends the extravagant work of Chef Blackbeard."
my notes just say: 'ed is a chef and stede is a cute guy and they are cute together' and i think that is a pretty good summary tbh.

"Crown Prince Stede Bonnet. Reserved, anxious, and newly arranged to be married. A child is expected. Though, with the Prince’s lack of experience, is also highly unlikely. There are murmurs of an educator of sorts amongst the nobility, with raven hair and eyes like fire, who has been the cure of impotence and disagreeable attitudes. He has been called many names, whispered behind hands or between cracks in doors. Siren. Kraken. Devourer of Love."
short and sweet and so different from most other things i've read in this fandom. lots of flirting and pining and copious amounts of seduction.

"Stede gets caught in a time loop at the moment where Badminton tries to shoot him."
i put off reading this because i thought i wasn't super keen on time loop fics. i was wrong. this is charming, and a little bit heartbreaking, and VERY well written, and i loved every word. don't make my mistakes. read this rn.

Over forty years at that spot, sitting proud, a beacon at the heart of the community, and when the old owner decides to sell, it's the perfect vessel for Stede's odd restlessness. And the building is connected to a famous cocktail bar run by a mad genius behind the stick."
smiling through my tears rn. i was so absorbed that the end of the fic came up on me like a jumpscare. stede and ed continue to be posterboys for maladaptive coping mechanisms. books & cocktails & outrageous flirting.

"Determined to prove he can earn a living without his family's wealth, Stede applies for a job at the UK's biggest retailer (probably). Hmm, I wonder who his supervisor will be... surely not a handsome bearded man sick of the retail grind until Stede joins his workplace and makes things interesting..."
so unserious and so funny. fuckin' brilliant. made me genuinely laugh out loud so much that my dad asked if i was okay.

"Ed didn't know why Stede’s house had a room sealed off. Two decades gone, filled with the creation and destruction of things they'd never shared with each other, and Ed no longer had reading privileges to the Book of Stede. So he's left to wonder - what's in the room? Why is the door plastered over? And why does Ed remember kissing Stede on a make-believe ship they’d invented as kids?"
thank u sm to @okayestokapi for the rec!! i love the sort of magical-mystery vibe this carries the whole way through & the conclusion was so charming and clever. heaps of fun.

"Stede and the crew come to find Ed and make things right. Turns out Ed is doing the same".
i am simply a sucker for a good post s1 reunion fic, and this is up there with the best. it flows really well, the characterisation is so good, and it felt like such a natural continuation of the s1 story and character arcs!!
Invisible String by @dimplyowl

"Scourge of the Caribbean" has been Stede's favorite book series since he was 12 years old. Now, age 47, divorced, and an aspiring author, he turns back to the series to draw inspiration from the familiar story. But as he starts reading, he realizes that something is different. Blackbeard, the main character, is apathetic and depressed, and the story has changed. Even stranger still, Stede seems to be the only one aware that this change has occurred."
more magic realism!!!!! this is so much fun and such a clever idea (plus such clever execution)! lots of flirting and stede being flustered and cute dates.

Ya know what’s curious to me? In Episode 2 when Crowley asks Aziraphale in the cellar whose side he’s on, Aziraphale responds “God’s, of course!”
Ya know why this is curious?
Well, for one, they’re talking about sides. Heaven and Hell. Their respective bosses. Crowley’s response of going along with Hell as far as he can makes sense, it’s what we expect to hear, but when he turns the question on Aziraphale, he doesn’t exclaim ‘heaven’s obviously!’ He immediately associates himself and his values with God directly.
Second of all, In episode 6, when talking about accepting the Metatron’s job offer as the new supreme archangel with Crowley, Aziraphale says “but heaven! Well, it’s the side of truth, of light, of good.”
For the entirety of Good Omens season 1, Aziraphale had always talked about following God’s ineffable plan, which was a noticeably different turn of phrase than those such as Gabriel used in heaven, always referring to it as the Great Plan. This is even the very thing that lead them to wiggling their way around Armageddon in the first place when confronted by Gabriel and Beelzebub.
Aziraphale has always made the distinction that he is an angel and does good because he believes that God is good and he trusts in their design.
Now I might just be loosing it, it is nearly 3am, but this sudden distinction and the choice of Aziraphale to not only discuss heaven in such a manner, but to refer to it as an entire Side, and use the adjectives he uses to describe heaven when we’ve only ever seen or heard him talk about God this way… it just all plays very intentional to me. It feel’s weird.
Especially once you take into consideration the flashbacks we’re shown of Beelzebub and Gabriel discussing the failed Armageddon in their little pub rendezvous. They never once mention their respect ‘boss’. Gabriel says “we are ready for round two.” And Beelzebub’s response is “as are we.” This we that they’re referring to isn’t God. It’s not Satan. They’re talking about the beings who reside in these respective places. The Angels and the Demons. And the conversation then continues with Gabriel admitting, “everyone in Heaven is all like, ‘Well, you’re the commander-in-chief, can’t you just make the war happen anyway?’ Like, I make the rules.” And whats Beelzebub’s response? “That’s exactly what my lot said.”
The pressure isn’t coming from God anymore. In the past, like seen in the Job episode, when there were divine tasks at hand they were dealt with by the angels for God, and God was directly involved in finding the outcome. There was no going through management or filing paperwork or monitoring miracles. And hey, I get it. As time evolves along with the humans, so does everything else.
My question is, is it possible that with these evolutions in the human world, that Heaven and Hell have perhaps learned a thing or two from humanity as well? Already they’ve mimicked the clothing, the office spaces, the entire design of heaven and hell down to the management hierarchy. Is it possible that these wars and these fights aren’t being started by God anymore, but an act of civil war amongst the Angels and Demons? We already see Michaels urge for power and control paralleled and almost foiled by Shax’s drive for control and power and both were the driving factors between any of the Major problems this season that lead to major conflicts between Heaven and Hell.
That brings us of course, to the Metatron. Who is he and where exactly did he come from? When did his position become necessary and why wasn’t he present as the ‘voice of god’ in the job minisode? Why suddenly are all of God’s plans, only being carried out by him?
Do you want to know why I think Gabriel was being demoted and not sent to Hell as a fallen angel? Because I don’t think they can. I think that’s something only God can do, but what kind of fear and control would that hold over all the busy bee’s? No, no, instead, let’s frame it as a Kindness. Heaven won’t cast you out because it will make them look bad! because it’s happened before, so they have no choice but to play a game of politics to keep everyone in check.
But here’s my question. Has there been a fallen angel since the great war? Why is it that after all this time, Aziraphale hasn’t fallen time and time again? Why is it that instead of an Angel falling from grace to join the armies of hell, the response to an act of rebellion is absolute destruction. The same could be said for hell. If you have demons walking around that are doing good, wouldn’t that simply just re-spark their halo’s? Why is it that they’d be destroyed by Holy Water instead of simply returning to Heaven?
It’s because God plays an ineffable game of their own design. They’re not playing with earth, or humanity. They’re toying with the Angels and the Demons. It’s why they’re placing bets with Satan.
When Crowley’s attempting to convince Aziraphale to run away for the last time, he doesn’t say Fuck God and Fuck whatever game this is, we don’t need to be a part of it. He says Heaven and Hell are toxic we need to get away from them.
It’s just so curious to me how this season has carefully and slowly taken us away from the idea of God and God’s Ineffable Plan and instead led us into this drama between Heaven and Hell, no mention of God whatsoever. No narrator.

Worst most tragic quote of any show ever:
“Some men are born to be kings… I was born to serve you, Arthur.”
How everyone else isn’t horribly unsettled by that line of words fuckin’ astounds me.
HE DOESN’T SEE HIMSELF AS A PERSON!
And he tries to twist it into a positive thing!
It’s the fact that he suddenly believes that anyone is born to be lesser or greater than anyone else. The equality he hoped for at the original round table? No sign of that here. He’s been so socially abused that he’s resigned himself to being “less than.” It’s been impressed upon him again and again that he’s predestined to be Arthur’s inferior.
He doesn’t realize anymore that Arthur wasn’t born superior to him, with a grand entitlement to the monarchy’s hoarded wealth. He doesn’t realize that the scraps he has to his own name are disproportionate compensation for the work he does! He doesn’t seem to recognize that leadership should be divorced from concepts of unlimited power and greater wealth, that a leader should not be “above” their subjects, except when it comes to his own power and leadership. Then, he’s stopping people from bowing to him, and speaking to his followers as equals. But when Arthur expects and enforces the rule that he is treated with greater respect than anyone else, treated to greater luxuries, and that his work is ~more important~ so others (like his servants) don’t deserve their share of the wealth, that’s seen as completely normal and uncorrupt. Arthur’s an over-glorified CEO, and Merlin is placed on the lowest tier. And no one sees anything wrong with this political model?
He genuinely believes that he is Arthur’s inferior, morally and spiritually, and that the position he was born into (as a poor farmer, then servant, and “monster”) was intended to reflect that, as some sort of payment for his ~innate flaws~. He believes that Arthur specifically was born king because he is superior, that he was born into his insurmountable political/social power & wealth because he is somehow more deserving of it, when Arthur is just like any other person ever.
And it’s even wilder because he doesn’t think this about Uther or Morgana! It’s like Stockholm Syndrome. And what’s worse is that the narrative glorifies this perspective, doesn’t treat it as the horror that it really is, doesn’t engage with it as an idea that needs to be challenged.
It’s so different from how he approached his destiny in seasons 1-4, it’s arguably just out of character, plain and simple. He used to have some fight in him, he had a sense of self (even if he was lacking in self-worth, which is why he was so susceptible to this). He knew that he deserved to be seen as a person, as capable, as dignified. This negative development in his character, that he believes he doesn’t get to simply exist as a human being, that he only exists to serve the needs of others, while everyone else gets to just be a person without their very existence needing to be justified… it’s disturbing! How do people romanticize this? He’s an immortal martyr. When he can’t die for his cause, he gives up his life.
Merlin is more than a weapon, more than a shield, more than a thing. He wasn’t born to be used! He’s just a person, he deserves to simply be. Everyone does.
I hope he learned to after Arthur and Gaius died.

The Prisoner's Throne Predictions and Connection to The Oak and Holly King.
I just made a HUGE discovery that Oak and Wren's character and story was inspired by the famous mythical story of The Oak King and the Holly King. According to myth, the Oak King and the Holly King are siblings who battle for the crown. Eventually, one of them emerges as the king, but is later overthrown by the other. This cycle is endless.
The Oak King (Prince Oak) represents life, growth, summer, light, and fertility, while the Holly King (Queen Wren) represents death, darkness, and winter. Each king has a bird that represents them; the Robin represents the Oak King, and the Wren represents the Holly King. (Holly is so smart and sneaky, love her for this)
Tumblr media
Oak King/Prince Oak. Holly King/Queen Wren
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When the Oak King rules, flowers bloom and grow tall, representing life and summer. When the Holly King rules, the days are cold and things perish, representing death and winter.
'They say that he can talk flowers into opening their petals at night, as though his face were that of the sun. He'll steal your heart.' - The Stolen Heir
Even though the Oak king and The Holly king battle for the crown, they cannot live without each other. Death must occur for life to happen; there's no one without the other, but they don’t rule at the same time!! (HMMMMM)
It's a super cool mythical story. When the days are hot and flowers are blooming, it means that the Oak King has won the crown. On the other hand, if it's cold and things start dying, it's a sign that the Holly King is ruling
"With him, I am forever a night-blooming flower, attracted and repelled by the heat of the sun."
- Wren, The Stolen Heir
According to an old folk belief, if you see a robin(Oak) during winter, it signifies the end of the Holly King's(Queen Wren) reign and the arrival of summer. Centuries ago, when people had limited knowledge of the seasons, they used to kill wrens to fasten the end of winter and end the Holly King's reign......
So let's try to connect this to The Prisoner's Throne...
What we know so far from the promotions of the book, and sneak peeks is that there will be a huge battle for a CROWN.
If Oak is The Oak King, and Wren is The Holly King (queen) then there will possibly be a dethroning. Meaning that Oak will most likely dethrone Wren. Which would be quiet messy, since we’re all pretty much expecting Oak and Wren to rule together. But even the overview for the book mentions that Oak has to choose between trying to regain Wren trust, (which if you read chapters 1-3 of the prisoner's throne, you know that option isn't working), or fighting against her and ending her reign.
Here are some of the promotions pics for the book, including TPT's overview.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
When I read the words "And a battle for a blood-soaked crown" and "blood will reign," it made me think of the Elfhame Blood crown, which only members of the Greenbriar line could only wear. But then i remembered that Cardan had destroyed the blood crown in the end of TQON. So this makes me believe either there's a battle for a NEW crown (Wren's current crown) or that Oak IS the crown, as if that Wren and Elfhame (Jude and Cardan) are battling to keep Oak. There could be many interpretations, what do you guys think?
Also, going back to the story, If the Oak King and the Holly King cannot live without each other then I think that pretty much confirms that neither Oak or Wren will die? maybe a part of wren could die but who knows. I think they would have to come to term with each other eventually. Since Oak is part of the Greenbriar lineage, and Wren carries milieht's heart, then technically in a way they are fighting themselves? Could the magical lands of faerie possible have response or reaction to their heirs fighting each other? If Wren wanted to magically erase Oak or Cardan from existence then would it work?? Sooo many possibilities UGHHHH.
It's possible that Holly isn't going to fully follow the story of the Oak and Holly king into the prisoner's throne, but so far we've gotten MANY similarities between Oak/Wren and The Oak/Holly King.
Hopefully this wasn't so confusing to read, I got too excited writing this. I'd like to hear your predictions on this!!! In the meantime I will be trying to connect the dots.
39 days until The Prisoner's Throne comes out...

I want to talk about the criticism of Hazbin Hotel and why I sort of understand it but personally don't agree.
The main complaint I see is that it feels rushed. Personally, I don't mind the pacing, especially considering they only have 8 episodes for season 1 and from a story-telling standpoint, you want to establish all the "plot promises" (basically the many plot-lines and their premises) right away and given that they only have 8 episodes to do it I would argue they've done a fine enough job with pacing. We don't know the limitations they were given.
Aside from that, I've heard people saying that it's as if "You asked a Mormon/ Devout Christian to write an R-rated story" as if that's a bad thing or a joke to poke fun at Hazbin and I take a tad bit of issue with that.
Because I would argue, yes, and that it makes sense. First of all, who would you expect to have enough of a religious background to write all of this? Who would have the rage except for those of us who have suffered in the name of holiness?
I think it's written to make you think, "Wow, this religious stuff is totally absurd bullshit." Because it is. We would know, the ex-Mormon's and abused ex-Christians. It's stupid to think that vulgar language or sexual jokes make something "bad" or "good". We fucking LIVED through that shit, man. It's supposed to piss off the type of people we escaped from. Because their religious beliefs are utter bullshit and when they're presented with a valid argument they basically do exactly what Adam does: "Uh, fuck you."
I think the choices are intentional. It's supposed to be vulgar because it proves that good and bad aren't determined by those sorts of things. Because that vulgarity doesn't make the show "bad" or "edgy". It's just a part of the show. And the characters are so much more than "good" or "bad" too.
This show really has a place in my heart because I lived through a religious nightmare. I asked the same questions Charlie does. I cried and I prayed and I begged God to fix me. But the truth was, I never needed to be fixed. And if God exists, he's the biggest hypocritical asshole of them all. This show screams the pain of the religiously abused, and I live for it. If religion is real, then we're all victims of a shitty system. And a couple of curse words don't make a rat's ass worth of difference.
The show is trying to show you what it's like to be born into a life you didn't chose, forced to follow these shitty rules. It's written, if you will, "like a religious person was asked to write something R-rated" because that's the story its trying to tell.
It's fine if you don't like it, if this isn't your thing. But don't make fun of the people that love it by implying that its stupid and "made for prudes trying to be edgy" because then you're implying that we're all stupid for enjoying it. I love this show because it shows the story of the lives of us who suffered in the name of religion. You don't have to love it. But don't shit on me for holding it close and enjoying every part.

I just rewatched 02 x 07 for the first time since finishing all the books and I can't stop thinking about it. I feel like everyone is either on the side of (1) it was all a big ploy, or (2) that's it for Moiraine and Siuan they can never come back from this--but I really don't think either of those are true.
I think the most in character thing Moiraine could possibly do is forgive Siuan, for the following reasons:
Moiraine knows that she would do the exact same thing that Siuan did here--namely, sacrifice anything (even their relationship and their trust in one another)--for the sake of the world and their mission. And this shared goal, these compatible values, and this mutual understanding is literally what has kept them together despite 20 years of distance and secrecy from the world.
[MINOR BOOK SPOILERS] We see in one of the books that Moiraine believes she and Siuan have made their beds and will lie in them one day by becoming involved in the quest to find the Dragon -- I believe the way she phrases it is about payment coming due for all the rules they've broken and the secrecy etc. that they needed for their quest. If this is her attitude, she is not only willing to give up everything, but expects to give up everything. And she expects it of Siuan as well.
Siuan has already proven how much she would give up for their quest. She became Amyrlin despite, as we learn this same episode, how much she did not want to be trapped in the tower and could not see her future there. She gave up any semblance of a happy life (how she would picture it both with and without Moiraine!) for this quest.
In some ways, if Siuan had just let Moiraine take Rand through a waygate to Falme, it would have actually been a betrayal of their mission. Their mission wasn’t “get Rand to Falme.” It was “protect and train the dragon reborn.” Siuan feels the need to do that as acutely as Moiraine does--and critically, Moiraine knows this about Siuan.
This goes quadruple if Siuan actually did think Moiraine could be a dark friend. Siuan thinks Moiraine lied to her!! And Moiraine knows this too, since Siuan does at least have the chance to say "You lied to me!" Moiraine would understand that if there was any chance Moiraine had been turned or was compelled, Siuan had to try and stop her from taking Rand off to god knows where.
Literally just a few days earlier Moiraine had threatened to have Alanna take Lan’s bond by force if he stood in her way--aka, the way of her mission. At this very moment, Moiraine herself has spent days (weeks?) contemplating what it would mean to betray the autonomy and trust of those she loves most if it means saving the world. And she knows what side she's on.
When Moiraine says, “if you have ever loved me don’t do this” my heart shatters into a million pieces. But that line is not just ,“it will be a betrayal of our love and trust if you compel me." It is that, but it's also a call for Siuan to see Moiraine for MOIRAINE. She’s saying “you know me.” She’s trying to get her (Siuan) to see that what she (Moiraine) is doing is not about her shame and pride but about the mission. Because it is ALWAYS about the mission, Moiraine IS the mission, and Siuan loves her because of that, and Moiraine knows Siuan loves her because of that
Moiraine clearly hesitates before going through the waygate. Her character isn't one to linger out of shock and betrayal. She lashes out and she puts up distance--we've seen this all season. Moiraine moves forward. So I read her looking at Siuan here as far more "I love you and I'm sorry [I can't help you? it's come to this? we can't reconcile?]" than "How could you?" or "You're a different person to me now." I’m not trying to minimize the violation Moiraine is also feeling in this moment, I just think that if the violation was her primary emotion she would likely behave differently. And if she can have this messy a set of emotions even in the heart of the moment, I have faith she can similarly hold multiple emotions later when reconciling.
The flashback scenes are so heartbreaking but they don’t have to mean that Moiraine and Siuan feel so betrayed and far from those versions of themselves that they will never be together again. Those flashbacks can also be saying “remember when we were those people?” Holding onto those versions of themselves is how they hold onto their love despite this scene.
Those flashbacks also remind us that their relationship in the show is like 50 years old. It is deep. People don't throw away 50 years of relationship without a conversation, even if there is a deep betrayal involved. And that's normal people--not even people who have given up absolutely everything for a cause that the relationship has now gotten wrapped up in. In the books, they are together for a few years and then seemingly go their separate ways when the Dragon is reborn. I don't think the show would have gone out of its way to deepen and lengthen this relationship just to end it so quickly and unceremoniously.

Hello! Welcome to the Blue and Violet Ask Blog!
As you might have guessed, this is an ask blog where you can ask the Mayor (Blue) and Macaque (Violet) from LMK questions! However, before anything else, there are a few things that you need to know.
General Things:
First things first, if you are not aware already, this blog is not based 'completely' on LMK canon! Instead, it is directly based and linked to the Blue and Violet Fanfiction series on AO3. Written by yours truly, me (haha!). Link to the fic series is in the bio/under the header. If you want to ask questions, please make sure you are up to date with all the chapters in ALL the fics in the series. (Also by the way YES THIS IS SHADOWPUPPET >:DDDD. If you don't like it and have a desire to assert your opinion regarding that? Then please, I kindly ask that you do not interact with this blog for your sake, my sake, and for the sake of everyone else who might want to enjoy this. Thank you :))).)
What this means is that the only things that Macaque and Mayor have experienced is within the context of this fanfiction series (which contains lots of establishment of how they know each other and their perspectives during seasons 1-3). Therefore, you definitely cannot ask these two about season four related things, because it hasn't happened to them yet!
Due to this, this blog will follow the timeline and events of what happens in the newest instalment of the series, 'Winter Mornings, Summer Nights' (previously, it was 'Colours'). After every chapter is posted, you will be able to ask Macaque and Mayor questions relating to what had happened to them in that chapter or any events prior in the fic series.
IMPORTANT: Whatever happens in this ask blog is NOT canon to the fic series. However, what happens in the fic series directly affects this blog. This means that nothing you ask or say on this blog will affect the Blue and Violet storyline.
Rules (or just... things to remember?) Regarding Asks:
I think I will be able to answer every question that you all submit. However, if I find a question too offensive, too uncomfortable, too strange (meaning I just don't understand it :'D) or something that will potentially spoil the future events of the fic series, then I will have to unfortunately ignore the ask. Either that, or I simply answer the ask with a silly picture of some sorts. On that note, please don't ask any character or me what will happen next! They probably don't know either! You'll all just have to wait and see ;D.
You can ask both Macaque and Mayor any questions you desire. However, I would highly recommend with each chapter posted, we stick to asking questions to whomever the new chapter's POV is in!
At some point, I may decide to only let you ask questions for certain characters when certain chapters are published. Completely blocking you from asking questions to other characters (due to plot reasons perhaps?)
Also, if you wanted, you could also ask side characters any questions you wanted! Like Baihe, or any one of my OC's for Mayor's side of the story. But, keep in mind that this is technically a Shadowpuppet ask blog XDDD thus, they should be the main focus.
Not only can you ask the characters questions, but you can also just ask me questions about the series in general? Or just... Say something I guess? I've had people do that on my main blog, and it always makes me happy to see that people like what I am writing!
I will be honest, I am not expecting many asks to come to this blog. But, on the off chance I am overloaded with asks, please know that I can only work so fast! If it really does get too much I will temporarily shut the ask box, but I will make sure that every ask is answered to the best of my ability (Update: I look back on this statement and I realise oh how so very naive I had been)!
IMPORTANT: As of right now, it seems I should be able to answer one-two questions per day (although it could be less frequent due to potential circumstances in the future) so keep that in mind!
After experimenting with the ask box I have decided that the box will be open for 24 hours whenever it opens! This is just so that people from different time zones can like, have an equal chance to get something in if they want, haha. No cap limit on the box for now, just go wild!

Lunar Eclipse Libra 5°
Tumblr media
Hey yall! You good? So we are in eclipse season and these first 2 eclipse are definitely ones to watch for! You’ve probably been feeling this energy for at least a couple weeks before.
So the upcoming Lunar Eclipse is March 25th. It’s varies in time depending on your location so google your area to see the time it’ll happen.
The last time we had an eclipse in Libra was the Solar one back in October 2023 so think of this eclipse as a continued storyline from October to now. What changes have you seen since.
What is an Eclipse?
Well the eclipse meaning varies from culture to culture but for me personally, I look at it as a time when big things are changing in the world and your personal life. Eclipse is literally clipping things that no longer serve you in your life and making room for something better. You have to fully embrace that change though and change isn’t always easy so be kind to yourself and others as well.
How long do it last?
Eclipse energy can last up to 6 months -1 year. However, the effects of an eclipse can affect you for years because it’s like a domino effect happening.
Lunar Eclipse
A lunar eclipse is the moon. The moon represents your home, inner emotions, family, our private life in general.
So a lunar eclipse is a time of big changes in our private life, these changes can make a long lasting impact so journal some things you are seeing change or what you want to change.
Libra 5°(Leo degree)
Libra rules over relationships, life balance, justice and fairness in our life.
Overall energy
-So, this is going to be a time to focus on your close and personal relationships in your life. Do you have a support system? Who do you want in your life, or not want? People may start to reveal their true colors to you and you’ll see who in your corner. There’s a flip side to this, have you been in others corner like you expect others to be in yours? There’s going to accountability on how you connect with people and how they connect with you. With the Leo energy influence, it’s going to make you open up your heart in connecting with these relationships.
How will this eclipse personally impact you?
If you have any Libra Placements that’s 0°-9° in your chart, you feel it the heaviest.
Check and see what house Libra fall in your chart.
Check your 4h as well because the moon rules your 4h, so it will naturally affect that house no matter the sign it’s in.
Since it’s in the sign of Libra, check your Venus as well because Libra is ruled by this planet.
Write it all down in your journal. Then keep living your life, write down any noticeable changes in your life snd see how it connects to this eclipse.
Other advice
Follow YOUR intuition on what to do during this eclipse, you’re going to be getting lots of advice on what to do/not to do. Use discernment and listen to your own sprit team on what you should do for you! Drink lots of water as well!

star trek enterprise, season 1 starters.
the following is a collection of sentence starters from star trek enterprise.
is he dead?
so that’s your diplomatic solution? to do what they tell you?
you’re not going to let them do this, are you?
you have no idea how much i’m restraining myself from knocking you on your ass.
this is no time to be imposing your ethical beliefs.
when your logic doesn’t work, you raise your voice?
i had a feeling their approach wouldn’t sit too well with you.
don’t screw this up.
i don’t think i’m quite ready to have my molecules compressed into a data stream.
they claim it’s safe.
keep your shirt on, (name).
is it me, or does the artificial gravity seem a bit … heavy?
i believe you missed a spot.
think you can handle it?
keep trying, you’ve almost got it.
it’s impossible for me to leave now.
i could order you.
do you really want someone else to do it?
in the meantime, we’re to extend them every courtesy.
is there a problem?
while you may not share our enthusiasm for this mission, i expect you to follow our rules.
if there’s nothing else …
can you prevent it?
when will we speak again?
don’t be concerned with ‘when’.
love what you’ve done with the place.
what you lack biologically, you make up for with your … charming optimism.
be very careful with that.
if you’re going to try to embrace new worlds, you must try to embrace new ideas.
please, no apologies.
what better time to study human beings than when they’re under pressure?
i’ll do the best i can.
you’re upside down, (name).
sightseeing was not one of my assignments.
all work and no play … everyone should get out for a little fun now and then.
you should have started without me.
you have yet to embrace either patience or logic.
with proper discipline, anything’s possible.
perhaps you’d like to go to your quarters and lie down.
i’m sorry, (name), i’m doing the best that i can.
we’re losing power on all decks.
shut up!
there’s someone here.
are you alright?
we have state of the art senses. why the hell didn’t we detect them?
there’s no way you could have anticipated this.
your mission is over.
space is very big, (name).
your reaction to this situation is a perfect example of why your species should remain in its own star system.
get the hell out there and make yourself useful.
i’ve never seen anything quite like it.
did it ever occur to you that i might know what i’m doing?
any luck?
are you sure it’s safe to stand so close to that?
why the hesitation?
i wasn’t authorized to reveal the details of our findings.
i’m not going to harm you. tell me where it is.
are you certain they’re telling the truth.
i don’t know what you’re looking for.
you have a tendency to be … gregarious. i suggest you try to restrain that tendency.
it’s nothing that concerns us.
but first — you should enjoy yourself.
we should get going.
i’ll meet there as soon as you can.
you should learn when to interfere and when not to.
maybe we should get back to where there are more people.
you better be careful.
if you’re thinking of harming me, i’d advise against it.
what are you doing?
you know, under different circumstances i might be flattered by this, but …
that’s … never happened before.
you know i’m not lying to you. now what?
they’re simply soldiers fighting a temporal cold war.
you need to get up here as quickly as you can.
the storm’s getting worse.
the storm’s kicking up too much interference.
i can’t do it.
it shouldn’t take more than a few moments.
you must really be proud of yourself.
you didn’t wasn’t much time, did you?
how long before we get back to (planet / place)?
what happened to, “this is a foolish mission”?
my instincts tell me not to trust them.
there’s too much distortion.
your instincts were right.
i believe we have found what we’re looking for.
they followed us here.
i’m okay, (name).
wouldn’t exactly call this an improvement.
it’s just a little bad weather.
we’re too far away.
if we remain here, they’re going to locate us.
how complicated can it be? up, down, forward, reverse … i’ll figure it out.
it’s illogical to attempt this alone.
never put off ‘till tomorrow.
if anything happens to either of you, i’ll be held responsible.
they have two settings: stun and kill. it would be best not to confuse them.
i really don’t want to have to carry you out of here.
be quiet!
i’ll be right behind you.
i don’t particularly like the way you smell, either!
wait a minute. i think i’ve got something.
i’m only picking up two bio - signs.
turn the ship around. now.
what’s there to interpret?
what the hell is that supposed to mean?
i can’t believe this!
the situation must be analyzed logically.
you’re wasting your time.
it would be unwise to discharge that weapon in this room.
am i supposed to be impressed you know my name?
i was going to let you go.
what you call tricks, we call progress.
sorry, (name). i had no other choice.
i’ll take that as a “thank you”.
let’s hope that’s the last time somebody takes a shot at us.
if i’m going to pull this off, there’s a few things i need to leave behind.
this mission would have failed without your help.
i hope you’re not in a big hurry to get home.
i didn’t realize you spoke slug.
she doesn’t look any better, does she?
i promise to do my best to keep it alive.
he’s gonna make you all better.
we’ve been out here for two weeks, and the only ‘first contact’ we’ve made … is with a dying worm.
shh! hear that? squeaking. something squeaking.
my people don’t share your enthusiasm for exploration.
i know the statistics!
i’ll leave you to your … exploring.
… i’m having trouble sleeping.
the further we are from everyone else, the better.
are you sure it’s not the simulations that are off?
it’s time for a little target practice.
anyone sitting here?
no, please. sit down, sit down.
try the potatoes. they’re delicious.
wasting time seems to be all we’ve been doing. starting to get a little antsy.
we’ve been on the move for two weeks, and we haven’t seen a damn thing.
every moment’s been an adventure for me.
humans are so unpredictable.
it’s good to see you’re enjoying yourself.
how big is it?
doesn’t seem to be moving very fast.
if you insist on allowing your curiosity to dictate your actions.
are those venting ports … or hull breaches?
those look like scorch marks.
if there is anyone home, you can be they know we’re out here.
not everyone chooses to answer the door when they hear a knock.
it would be best to resume our previous course.
maybe they’re in trouble — sick, or something.
is there a problem, (name)?
we’re not breaking in. we’re just going to see if everything’s okay.
there’s gonna be plenty of time to go exploring.
whoever’s on that ship might not want us nosing around.
maybe they could use our help.
sorry to bother you, (name).
it should be exciting.
the environmental suits, they make me a little … claustrophobic.
you talked me into it, remember?
what is it, (name)? is something wrong?
hang on, i’ll come with you.
can’t be too careful, (name).
you’ve seen too many science fiction movies.
is this necessary?
just a precaution.
just our luck.
blood?
whatever it is, it hasn’t been here very long.
(name), where are you going?!
my guess is, they’re coming back.
we should leave.
you’re telling me that we should just leave them there?
your intentions were admirable, (name). but there’s nothing we can do for them now.
i’d never seen that many dead people in one place before.
you have nothing to be ashamed of.
i screamed like a 12 year old girl.
we’re all frightened by unfamiliar things.
you should be grateful that your body of experience doesn’t include rooms full of corpses.
it goes without saying that you’re going to encounter the unexpected.
i shouldn’t have brought her onboard.
what kind of pasta is this? it’s great.
too spicy for you?
they were crewmen. murdered on their own ship.
what’s the matter? the tension bothering you?
must be great, not to let things bother you. no remorse, no guilt.
we don’t know where they came from.
we didn’t even try.
am i the only one who’s having a problem with this?
so we should avoid confrontation at any cost?
you got an answer for everything, don’t you?
we have a code of behavior, and we try to obey it.
it took a few thousand years, but i think we’re starting to get it right.
how were they killed?
care to assist?
could be a laundry list. or instructions on how to conquer the universe.
i’m surprised you’re not familiar with it.
how long before the transceiver’s online?
the quicker we get this done, the quicker we can get back to the ship.
i’m not suited for this.
give it a try, you’ll be fine.
i think i’ve got it!
they’re still not responding.
we’re dead in the water, (name).
i’m afraid we’re stuck here for awhile.
it doesn’t have to be perfect.
i’ll get it all wrong, and i’ll — i’ll just make things worse.
things can’t get much worse.
you’re gonna do just fine here.
how can you eat that stuff?
did you hear about this?
i wonder if someone lives there.
someone may have a claim on it.
i understand that you have a more cautious approach, but i didn’t come out here to tiptoe around.
thanks for choosing me for this mission.
you’d have better luck making friends with a housefly.
i almost forgot what fresh air smelled like.
take a minute to enjoy yourself.
perfect. hold it right there.
you have your assignment. we’ll rendezvous here at 1900 hours.
i’m afraid my log entry isn’t going to do this justice.
don’t worry, i’m not going anywhere.
you’d be lost without me.
sorry. i lost track of time.
glad to see you’re getting into the spirit of things.
when’s the last time you slept under the stars?
this isn’t shore leave. this is a research mission.
research isn’t the only reason we’re out here.
you almost destroyed the ship!
let me guess: no ghost stories where you’re from?
when i was a kid, i’d go camping with my buddies. we’d spend half the night looking up at the stars, wondering what our own sun would look like from this far away.
headache. if it’s alright with you, i’d like to lie down before we get back to work.
nice going, (name). you scared off the bugs.
did you hear that? someone’s out there.
are we allowed to squash alien life - forms?
you want to shoot a bug?
do you require assistance?
we should leave!
where do you propose we go? back out into the storm?
it’s too dangerous. we should go back.
who were they? who were you talking to?
there’s no one here.
we’re apparently not alone.
we’re getting out of here.
why won’t you tell me what’s going on?
i have no reason to deceive you.
you’ve held things back before. you might be doing it again.
this is pointless.
we’re stuck down here for god knows how long, with a bunch of rock people who, for all we know, are staring at us from these walls right now — not to mention a crewman out there who probably won’t last the night.
if we’re gonna get through this, i need to know what the hell’s going on.
you couldn’t care less about him, or any of the rest of us!
your emotions are beginning to effect your judgement.
you’re becoming irrational.
you’ve never seen me irrational.
i’d hate to add to our problems, but we’re running low on water
join me, if you’d like.
sit down. you heard me.
find anything you wanna tell me about?
there’s nothing of scientific interest on this planet. our mission here was a waste of time.
i’ve learned a great deal about human behavior.
i thought you had your emotions all locked up.
having a little problem, are you?
you think we’re gonna wait around here for you to slaughter us?
i’ll blow this whole cave apart if i have to.
i know you hear me!
these wounds should heal nicely.
you don’t understand what’s going on.
put your weapon down, (name). bthat’s an order.
have you been affected?
(name)? you still with me?
listen to me. i’m giving you an order.
what’d you do to him?
i have no idea what you just said, but it didn’t sound very nice.
you’re making a mistake, working with her.
i thought you said he was going to be fine.
i … think it might be too late.
i can’t tell you how sorry i am, (name).
i need to know if they’re going to be dead when we get there in the morning.
can’t afford to have you going out on me.
say one more word of that gibberish, and i’m gonna split you in two!
(name), how long have we known each other?
i’m asking you to trust me now.
this is a major breach of security, but i’m going to have to trust you.
i hope you know the difference between ‘stun’ and ‘kill’.
you didn’t shoot me last night, did you?
i was hoping it was all just a bad dream.
look, i know i kind of shot my mouth off last night…
challenge your preconceptions, or they’ll challenge you.

The Earthly Objects Game (Good Omens 2)
Tumblr media
Find the newest Earthly Objects material here: The Earthly Objects Game ... "You can't just manifest and cause trouble, there are rules." -Crowley, Good Omens 2, Episode 5 (The Ball)
(Crowley was blurry from the back when he really said that so the above screenshot is from the lines right before)
This post was last updated 01/10/2024.
Much of this post is some heavily involved theorizing. However, the Threshold Tricks existing actually supports a lot of this theorizing. I make mistakes nonetheless. Please keep that in mind. I am still confident in the Threshold Tricks, if nothing else.
The Game
This story has rules or at least some notable patterns resembling an expected script from its characters. We're going to call them "rules" for now and acknowledge that rules can and most certainly will be broken.
Crowley and Aziraphale have a heightened awareness of these rules compared to everyone else, at least in the present day and in this story. I will be focusing my attention there since the minisodes are more difficult to follow for me. Who made the rules? It could be them or God or a book or game they've been put into. I refer to this thing as a game because that's more my understanding of it than what it actually is. Most characters aren't really playing. They follow the rules on instinct.
Even season 1 has certain resembling factors to this game that I found. God at least did use the phrase "ineffable game" herself.
Both Crowley and Aziraphale are experts, but Crowley is astoundingly impressive at how he plays this game.
I call the game Earthly Objects due to the use of that phrase in episode 1 and the touching even shown during that segment. Plus, of what the mechanics of this game seem to do. If this game has another name, it is The Rule of Three, or something like that. The number 3 is vital to this game.
Points
The way the game seems to work is that, for a great deal of the story, it wants 3 points to start a scene. Some scenes even get chains of three points, but such chains are quite hard to spot.
When two characters interact, the story usually wants each of them to earn one point of that given set.
When it comes to a solo scene, the story still wants 3 points from that one character.
Points are simplifying things, and even simplified, they are dependent on context, timing, and placement around thresholds.
Things grow ever more complex with more characters involved.
Earthly Objects
Earth has objects, often thought of by humans as tangible objects. In this story, earthly does not mean solid, and touch does not mean direct skin or clothing contact. They are the most easily evident and likely common methods. The touch depends on how it is done and the nature of the object in question. Checking a watch for the time is an earthly object touch because that is how you use a watch on Earth.
We see three earthly objects in the show's opening before Earth even exists. Those objects are a crank, a scroll, and a book. One of them, the book, is touched through a supernatural method but still touched.
One touched earthly object is equal to one point. It can be held during a character interaction and still count in many contexts.
These are basic earthly objects, for a few examples; see more at the end:
Chairs
Windows
Tables
Walls
Books
Mirrors
Cups
Doorknobs
Bodies of living natural beings (humans and goats for example)
Blurs
Blurs seem to indicate a possible pass or share when studying how windows work.
When a character is blurred, that seems to mean a pass or that the next clear view of them will confirm the results of their touch during the preceding blur.
Thresholds
Thresholds are largely understood to be doors.
Most characters in Good Omens 2 will not concern themselves with the intricacies of only the door part that serves as the door. They'll just use the doorknob, get their point, and move on—provided the camera saw it, that is.
This story has other non-door thresholds, such as the edge of the sidewalk.
Crowley, one of the show's two main characters, does concern himself with the above-mentioned intricacies. It goes well beyond anything we see other characters do in the entire season. For example, he is capable of doing what I have decided to call Multiplicative Threshold Tricks.
Here is a post I made on the subject:
Earthly Objects Study - Multiplicative Threshold Tricks (Good Omens 2).
These are an incredibly special type of set compared to how the usual points are earned on earthly objects themselves. If the points system really is as simple as 3 total for one set, then the Threshold Tricks require a minimum of 6 points due to their involvement with thresholds.
Aziraphale may not manipulate thresholds on the same level, but he is aware and involved in at least some of the Tricks. In fact, at the story's end, he actually has his own part to play after The Door Trick is complete. I believe it is supposed to be called The Door Catch.
To further clarify and return to other matters, characters can touch earthly objects on thresholds, such as doorknobs, door handles, push plates, shades, windows, mirrors, the astragal for double doors, and so on. The panel serving its function as mainly the door itself is different. It can be touched...but it's not an earthly object touch. It is the threshold itself or enough of the threshold itself to not be considered earthly.
Thresholds seem to require certain timing that I definitely haven't watched every scene to log as if the interaction happened properly or not. The main thing I can say is that a lot of "Hello" lines happen while a character is crossing a threshold (or maintaining place in one), before the sound effect of a door closing completes.
Windows have a remarkable threshold component different from doors and will have a link explaining such further down.
Vary Technique
The story does not want the characters to use the same exact technique twice on the same type of earthly object touch to earn a point, in a different later scene. It can be similar but should have some variation. An easy example is Shax knocks on the window using her knuckles at Crowley’s car, then later knocks on a window to the bookshop with just an index finger.
I most certainly have not verified this, just noticed subtle variations when looking for these things. Crowley's Threshold Tricks have a pattern that I do believe is intended to be, "Never do the same trick twice."
Awareness
I'm convinced Crowley and Aziraphale are aware of the rules and making choices about them, but that doesn't mean they know every move they are making that is following the rules.
When Crowley shoots out lightning in episode 1, the lightning itself still actually follows the rules with three different touches on the door to the coffee shop. I don't think Crowley did that on purpose or even knows it happened. But it did happen.
Still, his choices in most, or at least quite a bit, of his movement during the story do appear to be deliberate choices.
Earth
The surface upon which characters stand and walk is the Earth. They can touch the Earth to earn a point, but it requires a little more effort, such as hopping. The hopping might require the feet touch the ground at different times.
Let's check in with our experts.
Crowley hops in place in episode 1 before shooting out lightning. He also hops while talking to Muriel before the scene ends in episode 6. In both cases, the feet do not touch the ground at the same time.
Aziraphale deliberately avoids a point in episode 6 when he makes sure to step backwards off a rug onto the floor in episode 6. No points for stepping backwards onto Earth. Or at least he didn't earn a point for walking partly on a rug.
When Crowley is walking on the sidewalk and passing by the coffee shop in episode 1, he does the following to earn two points, not even in the same set believe it or not. The first thing he does is rotate his body, such that his left foot is fully on the ground, but his right foot isn't. Instead, only the heel touches the ground. As such, he gets the point because the heel is touching the ground. He's not just standing. After he fixes the power, the camera shows that his left foot is already off the sidewalk and moving to the road. He gets a point for the step because he's not just walking on the sidewalk, then the road. He's stepping from the sidewalk to the road. It might help that the edge of a sidewalk is a threshold. His second step after crossing the threshold has the foot conveniently cut off from the camera.
What about running? The only example I can think of is Crowley running as he enters the bookshop but then he seems to shift into a skip. The camera doesn't see both feet fully the whole time though. So, for that one, I'm not really sure.
Clothing and Accessories
Clothing is regarded as enough of a character's self that just wearing clothes is not enough. They can earn points for touching their clothes actively during a scene, such as Nina touching her clothes while talking to Crowley in episode 5 after he comments on the name of her coffee shop.
Not any touch will do. It seems it also must be done in specific ways.
Crowley has a special way that he uses his pants pockets for The Pocket Trick. That way is really, really hard to understand. I can't keep up. However, from what I do understand, the threshold-only touch is not during the entire cut. There is a puzzle to solve and find the actual threshold-only touch within a given frame or few frames.
As such, when he's not at that exact point, he seems regarded as touching his clothes as an earthly object touch based on two interactions he has in episode 2.
In episode 2, he is walking with his hand in his pocket and thumb out. As he moves, the back of his jacket is touching over his hand. Soon after, Nina initiates an interaction with him. Not long after that, he's walking again and encounters Aziraphale. Crowley himself speaks. At that point, the touch comes from behind the hand.
Aziraphale, I think, puts his hands in and out of his pockets in episode 1, not instantly, so not sure if in, out, or both would count.
Accessories probably also depend on how and when they are touched.
Crowley’s sunglasses are a special type of accessory, so here is a post with more extensive info:
Earthly Object Study - Crowley’s Sunglasses (Good Omens 2)
In short, sometimes the sunglasses can be used as an accessory for the game but not always.
Due to how the story ends, I suspect the clothing and accessory rules are not as simple as just letting two interacting characters to touch only such things with a scene as extensive as the bookshop scene between Crowley and Aziraphale at the end of episode 6. The story cares about context, and there is some big time context happening in that scene.
Humans
Humans are earthly objects. As such, they can do self-touches, such as clasping their hands. Again, not any touch will do. It probably has to be done in a specific way, not that many humans would have this issue.
Maggie is the show's prime example as she uses this method quite frequently. She might be a special type of human based on other things we observe in the show, but the story considers her human enough to allow this method nonetheless.
Supernatural Beings
If a supernatural being is actively touching an earthy object, they can, like humans, do self-touches. I am sometimes not sure if they already can, but Crowley's self-touches during the ball invitations in episode 5 strongly suggest this idea is true. For when it seems like they are not touching anything, there is probably something else specifically within the scene that's allowing it anyway.
Miracle touches onto earthly objects are allowed. Crowley changing three traffic lights from red to green at the same time? That's an earthly object touch.
Supernatural beings are allowed reciprocal touches between each other, such as a fist bump or holding hands. Kissing is probably allowed though the one kiss shown has exceptional circumstances with a lot of other touching deliberately not happening.
Windows
Windows are easy to overlook because once you do take the time to study them in their more complex use, they are by no means easy to understand.
Here's a messy post about mostly a few more complex scenes involving windows:
Earthly Objects Study - Windows
Here is another one focused on how The Window Trick is done:
Earthly Objects Study - Windows Part 2 (Good Omens 2)
I didn't know it was The Window Trick when I wrote it.
Chairs
Aziraphale has a mysterious vendetta against the backs of chairs ever since Gabriel interrupted Aziraphale from listening to music. The chair he sits in when talking to Crowley about wanting help looking after Gabriel seems to be the main exception.
Aziraphale's got no visible back of a chair in the coffee shop or the pub, maybe other places, and even in the bookshop, when he is sitting in a chair, his back is not in the back of the chair most or all of the time. I don’t care enough to confirm every scene. It's weird.
This mystery suggests there is a point for the back to the chair that he is simply adamant to not earn. I am not sure if and how this is related to Varying Technique mentioned above.
There are plenty of other ways to earn points from chairs. It mainly needs to make sense for how a chair would be touched, such as using an arm rest.
Knock
Knocking on a window probably earns a point, provided the camera sees it. When Gabriel knocks on the door in episode 1? Not sure. The camera saw it, but the eventual response takes awhile. A blur might make it a pass. It's hard to tell.
Hands
Hands are complex and apparently there might be rules about the number of digits used on certain types of touches. If the touch is standard for one index finger and one index finger and thumb, it's probably fine.
Otherwise, generally check for at least 3 digits for one hand, at least 6 for two hands. Watch how the fingers are extended, curled, or consistency with each other. If you like trying to figure out this game, it actually does help you to see how the instinctual players still play differently from each other. Michael is far more likely to extend their fingers and use them broadly than Uriel, for example.
Crowley messes with this rule a lot. It seems he cares which touch is credited how. It’s not enough to earn points. It goes something like the park bench should earn the point so the newspaper can act as his own personal threshold until he decides otherwise.
Thumb tips are particularly important when it comes to managing thresholds.
I don't know if I'll ever figure the hand mechanics out fully myself.
Dialogue Points
Most interactions will not have both characters touching something. Instead, the characters follow dialogue patterns for the other points.
They tend to go something like the following:
Hello
Questions
Names
Statement of Place (might just be an extended form of "Hello")
Foreign Language
Combinations of hello, names, and questions are common. Two questions might even be enough for two points.
Hello
When Aziraphale enters the record shop for the first time in episode 1, he touches the window of the door twice, and says "Hello Maggie," before the sound effect of the door closing completes.
When Maggie enters the coffee shop, using the doorknob, Nina says "Hello" while holding plates with cups and before the sound effect of the door closing completes.
Equivalents such as "Hi there," are allowed.
"Excuse me," the show's opening words, are probably also allowed.
Question
"Yes? Was that you?"
"Seats? Mr. Fell, where are the seats I dropped off for the meeting?"
"Who are you? Who sent you?"
"What are you doing?"
Names
Titles in place of names seem to be acceptable.
"I don't know why you invited me, Mr. Fell."
"Officer, I need to report a crime."
"Jim, I'll need eight battery-operated candles."
Statement of Place
“I’m here.”
“I’m back.”
“You’re back.”
“You’re in trouble.”
“Oh, we’re going to the pub! You never go to the pub!”
“We are at war! Finally.”
"I think you know why we're here."
Statements such as these seem to be regarded as a type of "Hello". "I'm here" is said by Gabriel once he's opened the doors to the bookshop and steps out. When Aziraphale says, "You came back," to Crowley in episode 6, the doors are still open and closed just after he says it. He is otherwise not touching anything, not saying a question, not saying a number, not saying a name, and not speaking in a foreign language.
When Shax says, "You're in trouble," the window is open.
The "We are at war!" line is after the doors are closed, but since Dagon is in the group with Beelzebub who enters with fire, that seems to be the acceptable form of an earthly object touch combined with this "Hello" from Hell.
Numbers
If characters can say numbers, and I am increasingly convinced they can, that's a lot they can get away with. Numbers are everywhere, just like names and questions.
Foreign Language
When watching the show in English, characters talking in a foreign language is, I think, touching an earthly object. It's significant enough that Mrs. Cheng never has to touch anything except a fan when she is at the ball and talking in English.
Groups
Blurs make this harder to understand now that I know blurs exist and seem to have some kind of pass or share effect.
The story's going to go by some level of context with who is in the scene.
For something like the scene in the bookshop with the powers of Heaven and Hell, those groups are of 3 or more characters.
For that it, seemed only one character from a group is required to initiate the interaction on a group’s behalf. In episode 6, Crowley represents himself and the four angels who came with him. He does a hello and a question through an open threshold. The touch will come soon but not yet. Aziraphale says, “You’re back,” and then gets to represent the group of him, Jim/Gabriel, Maggie, and Nina. Muriel, who was in the group with Crowley, closes the doors. Crowley touches Shax’s shoe while Shax is unconscious on the couch. As such, Crowley gets the earthly object touch on the couch through Shax or on the shoe thanks to Shax being on a couch. For all I know, he gets both.
Dagon, Furfur, and Beelzebub arrive. I think Beelzebub’s fire is supposed to be an earthly object touch for their group, and Dagon says, “We are at war!” If I’m right, this third group still needed an earthly object touch, possibly because the doors were closed by that point. Additionally, when Beelzebub awakens Shax with lightning, Shax ends up both touching the couch and having books fall on her, so she gets touches in as well.
Chains
Chains exist in this game, as already noted.
Sometimes you'll see the three points to start a scene, then you might actually see another immediate or at least relatively soon three points, and so on.
They are really hard to spot, so I'm skeptical it's a full-scale requirement for the game, but it's much more dominant than I realized. Or, the dialogue makes it hard to spot because some dialogue is allowed to carry on instead of the non-dialogue touches. I don't know why that happens for some scenes and not others.
The most obvious chain I've seen, that led me to believe they exist, is the scene between Crowley and Gabriel in episode 5 when Gabriel is fiddling with the lamp.
Upon first realizing there might be a chain there, I thought that might makes it one of the most real scenes to the story even if Crowley might have an underlying intent to draw out his own demonic energy there. That also came from observing some basic rule-breaking that I'll note further down.
Then again, maybe not. I believe the scene with Crowley shooting out lightning is part of a chain too, but it's far more complex because of the window. There are still some notably suspicious fake things happening in the background once Nina realizes she and Maggie are locked in.
Zoomed Touches
Do not trust these things at face value, even if they are mostly avoided in the latter half of episode 6. I think most of them are supposed to be valid, but there are at least two you should not trust before that point.
Don't trust the zoom on Crowley's sunglasses next to a plate of Eccles cakes, even if there are three fingers visibly and clearly picking them up. There was a fake Crowley before that, and even the real Crowley is only holding them with two digits initially upon exiting through the bookshop doors as he puts them on. After a human passes by, then he switches to holding the sunglasses with more digits. That human is the hint of where the fake sequence ends.
The other zoom to not trust is Crowley holding the box in episode 6. Once he turns that box over, his thumb is avoiding touching it on purpose. He has the index and middle fingers together with their tips. Meanwhile, the ring finger can be found on camera but is deliberately separate from the other two and not clearly showing its tip.
In both cases, I think touches likely happened, but those are supposed to be a way of the story telling on its own deception. Gabriel probably arrived with a cardboard box at least twice. In the first draft of the story, the message written on the box may have been different.
Illusionary Touches
These things are new to me since I only noticed them when studying pocket touches. In The Pocket Trick, Crowley can't just do an illusionary touch whenever or wherever. He has to meet certain requirements involving timing and framing.
Theoretically, if such things are allowed for earthly objects, they are not as strict. However, I don't have much to go on and never really noticed. I had assumed things you would know would be an illusion, would not actually count.
Crowley's Name
Crowley's name usage, or lack thereof, is just flat out odd in the whole story, but if there is a rule, it's something like neither Crowley nor Gabriel are ever allowed to say Crowley's name. No exceptions.
For Crowley, this theoretical rule applies to all time periods shown in the season 2 story.
For more on just how odd the usage is, please see my post here. Be sure to check my own reblogs to that post as well.

Sideburns
I don't mention the sideburns much in this entire post since I have a whole other extensive post about them. However, they are relevant to this game in that whatever is going on with them uses the mechanics of Earthly Objects. Even so, it seems to be its own game with a scheme at work from both Crowley and Aziraphale. You can find more here: The Sideburns Scheme.
Rule Following
A fascinating example I've found of rule-following by Crowley and Aziraphale is when Muriel intrudes on them. I can’t fully explain the mechanics of the rules because like I said, I really do think Crowley is an expert at this game. Whatever is happening here is advanced stuff. I'm going to walk you through what he does to get this scene where it needs to go. He does it with style.
Before Muriel intrudes, Aziraphale had already made sure to have a cup of tea visibly touching his hands to start the scene in the room. Crowley poses to indicate he is touching a blurred stack of books in the room, even if Aziraphale's body obscures confirmation of that touch while Aziraphale closes the door. Crowley's left arm is shown as him placing a hand on his hip. During their conversation, Crowley's right arm keeps telling us he's still touching that stack and not moving away from it. Blurs, I believe at this point, allow a pass, and so this one seems to be allowing some kind of pass and then hold so long as Crowley keeps at it.
The story lets him without confirming that is the touch on camera. We are never going to see that confirmation. He displays his left arm and even says, "One fabulous kiss, and we're good," as if that's a clue he is allowed that one time to show that one arm until a certain thing is going to happen. That left arm returns to implying its previous touch as well.
Crowley has an earthly object prepared for the scene. He fully intends to give over those keys despite his grumbling. It might be very important that the car keys earn a specific point because they move the story along.
Ready for the pass, he has those keys in his left hand, skin contact and all, perhaps a little blurry on a camera from behind him, but still, he's got them.
Muriel opens the door, crosses past the threshold of this private conversation, and says, "All done?" No earthly objects. No hello. No knocking. We have an outright intrusion here! At least there was a question, but it might not have been enough due to what Crowley does.
Crowley pulls the keys back toward himself immediately. From the view behind Muriel, his pose is returned to match what it was when Aziraphale closed the door at the start of the scene even though Muriel's blocking the blurred stack of books.
Aziraphale's frustrated because of the rules. Crowley is going to do several things to handle this situation.
First, Crowley smiles and answers Muriel, then asks Muriel about being interested in humans being in love. That’s a question. Then he even stops Muriel from saying names. He's saying the names himself, so his implied hold with both arms might be allowing him to keep dragging out a lot of the dialogue until he gets what he wants. Assuredly, Aziraphale seeming to get quite turned on by this talk is about the love, but he's also watching the master of this game at work.
Eventually, Muriel brings out a notepad and pen. That's two earthly objects. Between both Muriel and Crowley, that interaction meets the requirements, regardless of the initiating question from the whole intrusion. Aziraphale has kept quiet the whole time though he at least smiles. Crowley's left arm readies itself for what comes next. His right arm is still implying the touch behind him.
Muriel's eyes move their attention from Crowley to the notepad. Spanning only a few frames after this shift, Crowley's blurred hand shows the keys for the touch and tosses the keys toward Aziraphale. Without checking frame by frame, it looks instant based on the notepad, not the eye movement from Muriel. He knew exactly what he was doing.
Aziraphale manages the catch, thankfully. You can tell he was nervous and is grateful. He winks. That gives one point to him for the keys in his hand and another point for the wink as a self-touch since he’s a supernatural being holding an earthly object. The pair need one last point.
Muriel's attention remains on their notepad for the entire toss.
Crowley's right arm maintains its implied touch throughout the entire scene, even after the toss is done. He does one last thing to close it all out. He gives a sour grimace to allow his cheeks an active touch on his new sunglasses. At least, I think that's how the sequence is intended to be.
So, my current guess is that the scene is three different interactions. The first is between Aziraphale and Crowley. They already had their points but the story doesn’t want just points (or, as noted, the implied touch may have allowed some kind of hold). Those keys needed a relevant pass between these two players. Muriel’s intrusion reset things, so that another interaction of three points between Crowley and Aziraphale was necessary.
Crowley takes over to be the one character to interact with Muriel, get them their own points without involving the keys in this intentionally isolated interaction. His precise timing is impressive. Then there’s the third sequence covered above (keys, wink, grimace). To help keep these interactions separate, Muriel should not see the pass.
Rule Breaking - Basic
Likely Fake Crowley, who is probably Aziraphale, passing a cardboard box and no dialogue is breaking the rules. Soon after is a blurry figure who I’m guessing is still a fake. The figure picks up sunglasses and avoids an obvious plate of Eccles cakes. These cuts are likely part of an edit. There are two earthly objects emphatically not touched. Gabriel is nowhere to be found, but the more clear fake had long sideburns. In the next bookshop scene, the plate has disappeared, and the cardboard box has been moved.
Crowley, Saraqael, and Muriel walking to the Heaven elevator is likely an edit because it also breaks the rules. There are no earthly object touches, no dialogue, and suddenly Michael and Uriel are in the elevator later. That one's probably obvious to others, but still. There were no touches is my point. Crowley didn't hop or run, and Saraqael never takes their finger off their joystick for their wheelchair. There were even avoided touches in the cut right before it. I have a gut feeling that Saraqael is not an expert but at least a little more attuned to these rules and would earn a touch point if they wanted. And Crowley certainly knows his way around on earning these points when he wants.
Rule Breaking and High Tier Play - The Final Fifteen
The rules of standard play and high tier play are contradictory, but I'm still going to say "rule-breaking" because I think it is important and fair in full context of what happens. There are touches, but things are still considerably different due to what is touched when. There is definitely a lack of touching on the number of earthly objects in the bookshop itself and even the street later.
Of the touches that do happen in the bookshop and street later, the kiss excluded, most of those are actually Crowley following the rules on the hidden higher tier of play on thresholds for his Threshold Tricks. You should read that link if you want to know more about what the tricks actually are.
The two main characters are the main ones breaking the rules though the Metatron is at least partially doing so as well. His play is completely off compared to everyone. Other characters will be shown, and they will be shown as still following the rules even though they have no further dialogue.
The rule-breaking seems to start when the Metatron looks toward the bookshop after talking to Muriel. If he's looking through a window, the story has decided we don't need a complex window scene then or during the entire conversation in the bookshop.
The first touch is a threshold-only one with Crowley removing his sunglasses. If my theory on the Sunglasses Trick is correct, that is actually the next-to-last touch Crowley is doing for the first of three Threshold Tricks that will complete by the end of the episode, after he completed two others before this latter half of episode 6.
However, the Sunglasses Trick is an extensive and questionable theory, even moreso than the tricks that follow it. What if it's wrong? Even if not wrong and partly for the trick to begin with, the nature of the touch is still notably different from the rest of the story and worth pointing out.
Threshold-only touches on the sunglasses have a general format that isn't like what is happening here. The sunglasses are usually detached from Crowley onto an earthly object if he removes them. If he does keep holding them or is not seen putting them on an earthly object, there are three preceding instances of a subtle demonic hiss to indicate he is using them as a demon addressing an angel, two of which happened in the present day with Gabriel.
Here, Crowley holds his sunglasses and will keep holding them until he puts them back on. There will be no demonic hiss. They are his door, and he is holding his door. They are emphatically not an earthly object or touching an earthly object by extension during his entire conversation with Aziraphale.
Both characters touch their clothes nervously but not in ways the rules seem to allow, such as how they manage their pockets.
Neither Crowley nor Aziraphale say hello or acknowledge that Aziraphale is back. Crowley skips straight ahead to having something to say that doesn't have the usual format. There is no name, no question, and so on. He even acknowledges they should be "talking about" and cuts himself off.
Aziraphale interrupts him, does include a question, but then actually answers it himself.
Most questions are given more care in allowing the other character a chance to respond.
Still, nothing they weren't already wearing is touched.
Soon after the usual initiating set of rules are broken, the cohesion of the story's narrative is broken. The present day has intentionally been moving the audience between one scene and the next to suggest events are following a given implied chronology and timeline of a few days. Gabriel arrived on Monday. Crowley looked exceptionally hot in a black turtleneck on Tuesday. Aziraphale went to Edinburgh on Wednesday. The ball was prepared for and happened on Thursday. They are currently experiencing things on this Friday.
We've had flashbacks since the start leading closer and closer to the present day, but not a single one of those flashbacks started in this manner of a present day narration to start the flashback. They've been memories playing out between the present day events. The other present day events have been mentioned in dialogue, not narrated. We go to a very recent scene that supposedly happened without us seeing it. Then Aziraphale chops it even more. "And I said, 'Me'? And then he said..." What kind of cut is that?! Broken I tell you. It's broken. Not with exact wording. I'm just pointing out the standard cohesion of the narrative before this point is emphatically broken here—maybe even on purpose. Even setting aside this game idea, we as the audience, are supposed to notice how jarring it is. It gives a heavy implication that Aziraphale is lying.
I question a lot of the dialogue throughout the scene, but it's too much for me and not really the focus with the touching and lacking touching.
Before the kiss happens, there is another threshold touch. Crowley puts his sunglasses back on. The thresholds to Crowley's sunglasses are the end pieces. He doesn't touch those as best can be managed but what he does touch is specifically the areas around them. Two fingers in front and back of each end piece with each hand. He is being protective of his door to the point he touched the thresholds of his own thresholds.
He could have chosen any number of other places to touch those sunglasses, but he chose there.
Additionally, this touch closes out the Sunglasses Trick, that started as far back as episode 1, if my theory on that trick has any merit. That is the first of his three Threshold Tricks for the end of the season. He started with opening both doors. Now he is closing both doors.
More dialogue is exchanged with no earthly object touches in between.
Finally, the kiss happens. By all appearances, it is an impulsive choice. Yet, that choice resembles a set if clothing touches were acceptable. Crowley grabs the lapels of Aziraphale's coat. That's touch #1. They kiss, and the kiss is reciprocated. That's touch #2. Aziraphale's hand touches Crowley's back with four fingers visible. That's touch #3. Aziraphale's nose might even be touching Crowley's sunglasses, but those things are a guarded door (so far as I'm concerned).
They make a connection with the kiss. This game is almost like a language they understand between each other. For me, the kiss is more about their love than rule-following or rule-breaking.
To remind themselves and/or us that rule-breaking is happening here, the scene immediately continues with an implied quick glance to the window by Aziraphale and continued rule-breaking in the dialogue ("I forgive you.";"Don't bother"). No further words are exchanged. Crowley leaves with a heavy implication of touching the door yet the doorknob is ever so carefully obscured from view as the sound effects inform us he left. Still, nothing they weren't already wearing was touched.
More happens. The Metatron returns, visibly using a doorknob, so there's an earthly object touch by him. However, everything's still a little off. Aziraphale happens to move his feet in specific ways around a small rug until there is a step backwards from it to the floor. He walks backwards onto a big rug, then does not move forward until the camera is no longer watching his feet.
The Metatron takes one hand out of a pocket to gesture toward a window, and the camera never shows when the hand goes back in. Muriel is shown through the window following rules, and while Aziraphale looks, the layout allows that he is not visibly behind the window pane where Muriel was either before or after the look.
Aziraphale manages to keep not touching earthly objects, mainly focus on his dialogue, make sure his feet move when they should move, and his arms and hands don't do too much. The Metatron isn't visibly touching or holding any earthly objects either. Both of them leave the bookshop without the camera actually showing the exit through the doors.
Crowley is shown standing at the door to his car, having positioned himself for his incoming trick.
Aziraphale and the Metatron talk some more. Then there is a miracle sound and a notable reaction from Aziraphale. He chances a look over toward Crowley.
When Crowley is shown in the third of three camera shots leading to that moment, he has completed The Door Trick. That is the second of his three tricks to finish in the episode.
Aziraphale has a follow-up chained in from that Trick that I call The Door Catch. I do believe the story intended to communicate that name due to how pocket touches work. They involve word play. The story had an extensive memory on The Bullet Catch in episode 4, so put the ideas together, and there you go.
Inside the elevator, there is one zoomed in touch of presumably the Metatron's finger on the button that could be the story meaning it is an earthly object touch. It's hard to trust with all the known deception in the story itself and how the touch doesn't happen with both his face and body on camera as is usually done with a doorknob for other characters. Such a thing was even shown earlier at the bookshop. Even if perfectly valid, the touch stands out. What is he, human? After studying pocket touches, which have a heavy human presence, I grow all the more suspicious he could be.
The Metatron was not shown crossing the threshold of entering the elevator, but Aziraphale is. The doors are not shown to close, but the implication from the music and sound effects is that they did. Aziraphale has successfully managed to still not touch any earthly objects himself. He is also framed in a specific way all-around that is related to pocket touch mechanics. I at least know what to look for, and I can tell you that his right arm is lined up with the Metatron's in a way that is significant because there is a vertex illusionary touch between them.
A little past that part being done, Crowley does The Window Trick. That is his third and final trick of the three of this latter half of episode 6.
Three Threshold Tricks for this part of the episode makes sense because of how much this game likes the number 3.
Once Crowley has those short sideburns again, something resembling earthly object touches starts. His blurred hand is shown gripping the steering wheel. Then the camera and frame he's in decide to hide it. Texture fades in over where he might be touching the passenger seat. A tiny bit of the driver's seat behind him is partly shown. The camera, lighting, and credits keep messing with the view.
Aziraphale just keeps standing and eventually smiles in a way that's not really encouraging, for me, when I'm sympathizing with Crowley. Admittedly, I do think Crowley has a strategy in motion, especially after examining his overall threshold manipulation during the story.
Whew.
Okay, time to move on.
Let's wrap up with some notes and a list. There is a bonus at the end saved for posterity. That was me starting to grasp at the first Multiplicative Threshold Trick.
Some Notes:
Skin contact is significant, both on earthly objects and on a threshold itself. It seems to have more power from Crowley when he has longest-length sideburns. In particular, I'm referring to three memory access points with Gabriel and The Door Trick. In the door trick, the skin contact touch is the one given a Triple with a Triple multiplier.
Gabriel has some skin contact in at least one of those same memory access points. Otherwise, I haven't figured out much besides Shax's notable avoidance in the present day storyline.
Rules are broken, and the season 2 story continues...until they're broken with great deliberation by two experts...who might be each on their way to Heaven and Hell respectively.
The one with the imagery of the Hell threshold has plants behind him, so some of Earth is still there.
Earthly Objects List
This list includes objects that may have had implied touches instead of actual touches because checking who touched what when, then realizing it's blurry or just presumed, is exhausting when I just want a list. I'm not going to specify every different type of paper that might have been touched...but you know...paper was touched.

Bonus Round: Me Bragging on Crowley
The below is saved for posterity because I had so much fun with it. I am quite convinced that this part was the first Multiplicative Threshold Trick and almost a tutorial because the others don't come, or at least finish, until much later and are far more difficult to recognize.
Look, I obsess over David Tennant being Crowley because he is so beautifully perfect for the role, so I am definitely super biased in everything here.
Allow me to attempt demonstrating to you how mind-blowing Crowley is at this game. We're not going to know if what I think happened, really happened, because I don't understand the rules the way he does. Here is what I think happened: He did three threshold-only touches while entering the coffee shop in episode 1. What does that accomplish? Why would he do that? I don't know! My current guess is maybe three in a row actually gives next-level supernatural points in the game, largely in part because of the season’s ending, which is too much to cover here.
Am I sure? Absolutely not, especially with how blurs seem to work between characters and the more standard earthly object touches.
The car arrives, and Crowley places only part of his shoe on the edge of the sidewalk. The heel doesn't touch the street, and the front tip doesn't touch the sidewalk. The movement is quick, so it's a little blurred. Theoretical threshold-only touch #1.
The camera pans up, and then you see his fingers on the side panel of his door that just so happen to only get maybe the window frame and not the window itself. It's blurry, but that's the best I can do. I also have to check frame by frame because it's too fast otherwise. So, if the window is the earthly object but not its frame, then we're good. He's touching both the door frame and the window frame so that could be a 2-in-1 touch. Theoretical threshold-only touch #2.
He closes the door, steps forward, does a spin, and then walks toward the coffee shop. When he gets to that door, his hand should be above the lock, and maybe it's a blurry gray thing, but it's so hard to tell. It's blurry. He's moving too fast. Even if he is touching it, he is covering it completely with his hand.
Since he covers it up fully with his palm, does it somehow not count? If so, then you can tell that his fingers are on the door panel only while his thumb is on the indentation of that panel connected to the window. The tip of his thumb is barely touching the window. The credit for the touch goes to the door panel instead of the window because the door panel has three of five digits from one hand on it whereas the window only has that one little thumb tip. Three digits on one panel could be a 3-in-1 touch. Theoretical threshold-only touch #3.
On entry, there is a fourth threshold that has no door, it’s just separating one section of the coffee shop to another. He passes through, passes Aziraphale, and sits down.
For some reason, he saves his starting two points for the arm on the back of the chair and the question, "Right., what's the problem?" Added in is an implied skin contact touch to the table, seen two cuts later.
The music and the camera work is really impressive in the whole thing, in my opinion. The story wants us to see that sequence in that way. What a beautiful entrance.
He's playing this game in tandem with his sideburns scheme, and there, he is definitely using thresholds to his advantage.
