🏅 What is something you recently felt proud of in regard to your writing (finished a fic, actually planned for once, etc).

Yeah, so. Not that. >_> If I’m perfectly honest, there’s very little I’ve been proud of in... how long? Dunno. Haven’t finished anything, haven’t planned anything... have barely written anything. Next chapter of Caught Between (last updated in May) has practically no words, next chapter of Gifts (last updated in March) perhaps a handful. I did start a new wip and wrote ~2500 words in a day which was nice I guess, but now it’s stuck too.
Sorry, this is a glum answer for an ask that should be all positive, but seriously, I’m in a slump rn. ^^;;
🧠 What’s an idea you have that you can’t quite call a WIP yet?
Hmm... I don’t know if I’ve got many of these. I think I’ve started writing most of my ideas...
Well, there is the Mary Poppins fusion XD In which Karma & Shuu are siblings and Aguri (playing the role of Mary) becomes their new nanny.
I don’t know if I’ll ever write this thing, but it amuses me quite a bit. I guess it would follow the plot of Mary Poppins pretty closely... I only have some random scenes in my mind. Like, heh, there’s the scene where Mary’s friend Bert takes the kids with him for his chimney sweep job (and she’s not happy about that)... well, here (human) Korosensei has Bert’s role, and Aguri for sure isn’t happy that the kids would get anywhere near his line of work. ^^;;
(This whole thing is just weird, I admit ^^)
(And then of course I've this one idea for original work (a fantasy book, or two) that I've had for like past 20 years and that I most likely never write. >_>)
💭 What is a headcanon you have about your own work?
Headcanons. Uh. Those things I’ve a plenty (not) ^^;
(Umm, disclaimer, I'm not 100% sure what this "about your ow work" means, so I'm just picking something that is a headcanon to me and is something that might or might not be overly visible in my fics)
So. Let's see... That contrary to the popular belief. Gakuhou loves his son. ^^ That all he’s doing, he’s doing out of love. It’s all messed up ofc. But the main goal is to make Gakushuu as strong as he can be, so that he won’t end up like Ikeda. (Moreover, I’d claim it’s semi-canon. :p The Graduation Album mentions that Gakuhou’s hidden side is that he won’t shut up if he starts talking about his son, and it hints at him being “oya-baka”, literally, idiot parent, i.e. overly-fond parent XD)
Oh. And I feel like him going so nuts over Ikeda’s death just makes no sense. They hadn’t been in any touch for 3 years, for heaven’s sake! All that “he loves Ikeda more than his son…” I don’t swallow it. But this makes me suspect he wasn’t such a balanced person to begin with. And... this might be another hc of mine... I blame his parents. They did name him “summit of learning” anyway >_>
But yeah. These are literally the only headcanons I can think of at the moment. XD (I've never understood how headcanons work. I keep on seeing those posts where people are asked to come up with headcanons about X, and then they just. do. Like. what.)

Since you mentioned you were looking for drabble requests, if you haven't moved on from AA already, could I request something where Apollo or Klavier is struggling against pride/feeling that his problem isn't a big deal/some kind of internal roadblock to seek comfort from the other? Maybe they lost a case they don't think they should have lost, or it's the anniversary of something sad, or they just feel crappy physically or emotionally. Any reason is fine. Thanks for considering my request ^^

It’s nearly six pm by the time Franziska finds him, tucked into a chair in the corner of some pretentious and probably ephemeral bar downtown.
It isn’t one of his usual haunts, but the staff seem to know who he is well enough, anyway. Though he is just barely twenty-three and his tab has been approaching the four figure mark for the past hour and a half, no one has bothered to card him or attempt cutting him off yet. Of course, that may have had more to do with the sizable tips slid to whatever staff member is closest in proximity rather than his rather notorious celebrity status, but Klavier’s ego has been rapidly ceasing to care about such things in recent months. What matters to him at this very moment is less the thrill of universal adoration and more the ability to nurse his wounded pride in pseudo-solitude with a vastly overpriced drink.
That solitude is shattered, however, by the arrival of Prosecutor Franziska Von Karma. The sound of her heels clicking firmly against the highly lacquered floors crescendos over whatever smooth jazz cover they’re piping through the hidden speakers as she makes her way directly over to him.
“Are you finished with your tantrum yet?” she asks, removing her dark sunglasses and placing them onto the surface of the bar beside him without any sort of invitation.
It takes a moment for the words to process; Klavier has spent so long playing the role of the ostentatious expat that his alcohol muddled brain can barely grasp the crisp and nearly foreign sounding syllables of her German.
By then, she has already removed her long leather gloves and cape, handing them off to an employee that floats near her elbow like a well trained dog on a leash. When she slides into the chair beside him and signals for the bartender, the scotch she orders for herself is nearly as expensive as Klavier’s own. If he weren’t so chagrined by her sudden interruption, he would likely be impressed.
“Since when is enjoying a drink after work considered a tantrum?” Klavier returns, finally, and also in German. He attempts to fire off one of his charming smiles as he speaks, but the words feel so clumsy and out of practice on his lips that the gesture falls short and sounds far more like the kind of sulk that directly proves the point she has made.
Franziska raises a perfectly arched eyebrow in reaction, though whether it is a response meant specifically for his faltering pronunciations or juvenile tone, Klavier can’t be at all sure. “Since someone recently made a complete fool of himself in a court of law.”
The words strike out like the lash of a whip; Klavier winces despite himself. Franziska is only two years older than him, but when she glances away with an air of disinterested disdain to take a sip from the tumbler placed in front of her, the gap seems far wider.
“You heard?”
“I saw,” she replies, glancing over to him again just long enough to offer a small, disparaging smirk. “It was quite the performance. Do people actually pay you money to see such foolishness on stage?”
The shame he’d been attempting to shove away for the past five hours flares up just below the surface of his thoughts then, hot and bright enough that he suddenly feels sick to his stomach.
“You are just as charming as they say, Fraulein,” Klavier smiles; the sarcasm tastes false and bitter on his tongue.
In truth, he had made a fool of himself.
Klavier has always prided himself on being meticulous in his pursuit of the truth, in perfectly balancing the demands of both his prosecutorial career and his life as a musician. And, most of the time, he’d succeeded so brilliantly that it had blinded him to the subtly advancing and yet still discreet signs that he might have been slipping.
There had been issues with the band’s latest album.
With the ink long since dried on the studio’s contract and their chosen title already heavily marketed, the pressure to produce something of value had been mounting. Every song he’d written since then had seemed increasingly vapid, words that fit a theme but lacked any sort of meaning, chords that sounded deliberately catchy but were devoid of anything new and surprising. They were going through the motions, but those motions were long since stale. There was nothing of the artistic fire that had skyrocketed them to success in their early years and that alone drained any last bit of excitement he might have derived from the process.
It was driving a neat wedge through the center of the band; Daryan called him a diva, so used to having things his own way that he fell to pieces at the idea of ever being told what to do. Take the money, release an album that was shallow but on brand. They could always switch it up next time when time was on their side. You’re the lawyer, he'd mocked, you should know exactly how much of our asses are on the line here.
Their arguments on the subject had become more and more frequent as the days passed, spilling from band practice to crime scenes and, finally, to the kitchen of Klavier’s apartment. This time, it was Daryan who had packed what few belongings he’d scattered throughout Klavier’s various shelves and drawers into an old duffle bag and left, slamming the door shut behind him with finality as he’d gone.
As Klavier’s luck would dictate, Daryan had been the lead detective on this last case. While they were both professional enough not to ignore each other completely during the proceedings, the type of communication necessary for a successful indictment had been… difficult, to say the least.
And so he’d been distracted in his investigation, enough that he’d overlooked a piece of evidence so decisive in the opposition’s favor that when it had been presented, he’d been left gaping in uncharacteristic surprise from his place at the bench.
Yes, he’d been slipping, unable to see the progression of his descent until he had been standing firmly at the bottom of a tall slope.
He was only lucky, he supposed, that this was not a murder trial.
Back at the bar, Klavier rolls his eyes softly, more an aversion of his gaze than a gesture for dramatic display. Franziska doesn’t seem to be paying him enough attention to notice such things, anyway.
“Well, you can consider me scolded. Your work is done.”
“And yet, that’s not why I’m here,” Franziska returns. Ignoring the eyebrow he raises toward her in obvious question, she instead tilts the tumbler back, swallowing the last centimeter of the amber drink. “I would not waste my time and energy searching the city to scold a fool who seems to be doing an admirable job of berating himself. No, despite your recent failures, there are people in this city who seem to care about your well being. It would be a shame if you were to drown in a pool of your own vomit.”
He cannot help his rather obvious flinch at her words, no matter how quickly he endeavors to mask it. “How very touching, ja? I was expecting more anger.”
Franziska pauses in the midst of extracting a matte black card from the small handbag she carries. When her steel grey eyes meet his, Klavier suddenly understands the fear the von Karma name had once inspired in courtrooms across the world.
“Oh, I am angry,” she smiles, wagging her finger in such a way that it is clear she is mocking him. “You allowed a criminal to walk free today. But he is guilty, I am certain of that. And now he will be cocky.”
Klavier is so stunned by her words that he barely registers that she has slid her card across the surface of the wooden bar, let alone has the presence of mind to argue.
“There will be more evidence to find and new charges to file,” she continues, unperturbed by his gaping. “I will assume that next time you will have your priorities in the correct order.”
With that, she stands and turns to the attendant who is still waiting nearby, ready to help her back into the dark, cashmere folds of her cloak. When the complex ritual of donning her long gloves and sunglasses is complete, she turns once again to face him.
“I will be driving you home. You may choose, now, whether you would like to accompany me willingly or if you will require Detective Gumshoe’s escort. You have until I reach the door to decide.”
It feels as though a whirlwind has swept through the room, appearing out of nowhere to disrupt his wallowing completely before disappearing as suddenly as she had come. Klavier is not stupid enough to doubt Franziska’s words, despite the fact that he is twenty-three and more than a bit inebriated. He wavers only slightly as he finds his own feet and follows her out onto the sun soaked sidewalk beyond the bar.
If she is smiling when she looks back towards him, it is the small, private smirk of victory. Klavier finds that he is too preoccupied with the act of placing one foot in front of the other along the uneven slabs of concrete to care. He stumbles gracelessly into the backseat of the car Franziska indicates, through a door held open by a man that Klavier can only assume is the Detective she had mentioned inside.
“Huh,” he comments before closing the door. “Somehow I thought you’d be taller, pal.”
A sharp stab of pain somewhere behind his left temple resonates brightly in response.
This is something he will certainly regret tomorrow.

“Okay, spill,” Apollo demands, crossing his arms in a visible display of stubborn obstination that, at any other time, Klavier might find endlessly adorable.
Tonight, however, he has reached a new level of exhaustion, one that leaves him blinking back at Apollo in baffled surprise as he attempts to pivot his thoughts from their previous trajectory in order to make sense of the other’s sudden words. “Spill was?”
As his words indicate, the intended course adjustment doesn’t go very well at all.
“Whatever’s going on with you,” Apollo replies, huffing out a sigh of what sounds nearly like frustration. “You’ve been working late, you don’t eat, you haven’t been sleeping. Something’s up; I think you should tell me what it is.”
Though Apollo’s words and posture are combative, it is all for show. There is an uncertainty in his eyes and concern exposed in the way he bites at the inside of his lip in silence, waiting for Klavier to speak. The fact that Klavier has learned to recognize this expression through repeatedly causing it is a painful enough thing to shoulder; to admit to the reason behind his behavior when it will only bring them both all the more strife, however, would be far worse. Not because he doubts the limits of Apollo’s strength; it is his own resilience that is threatened by the thought of divulging the extent of his insecurities.
Klavier runs a hand through the strands of hair that have escaped the hasty braid he had tied earlier that evening and attempts an apologetic smile. “Ach, Liebling, there is nothing to tell. It is just work.”
“You’re lying.”
It is stated as a fact, nothing more. But while there is nothing accusatory in Apollo’s tone and his face is perfectly even as he says it, Klavier still feels the words as though they are the sting of an attack.
“Ja?” he responds. “And you promised there would be no bracelet inside the house, did you not?”
What he intends is for the words to sound facetious, a nod to the same kind of fond banter they had indulged in long before the intimacy of a romantic relationship. But Klavier is lying; it is not an offense often committed between them and certainly not one he has reveled in or perpetuated out of malice, now. Still, to be seen through so shifted his smile without meaning to. Klavier can feel it teetering on the edge of a sneer that feels both unfamiliar and familiar all at once.
What follows, then, is a long pause.
A lifted arm, a proffered bare wrist, is Apollo’s only response.
That gesture feels more devastating than the aftermath of an actual, physical fight. Klavier can feel the air exit his lungs in a sharp hiss of remorse, his posture on the plush sofa of their study crumbling as he leans forward to place his head into his waiting hands.
“That was uncalled for,” Klavier begins, though his voice is muffled by the skin of his palms pressed firmly against his speaking mouth. “I am sorry, Schatz, I—“
But his words are interrupted by the sudden creak of sofa springs, the cushions on either side of Klavier dipping under the newly applied weight of Apollo’s knees. There is the feeling of Apollo’s warm fingers wrapping around the skin of his wrists, gently pulling his hands away from his face.
“I know you, Klavier,” Apollo says softly; his voice is so uncharacteristically gentle that the words sound less like a statement and more the sweetest declaration of love. Maybe they are. After all, Klavier has been loved before. But being actually, truly known? He glances up into Apollo’s brown eyes, warm with determination and affection. “I don’t need the bracelet to see when you’re upset. If you don’t want to talk about it right now, I understand, but you don’t have to go around pretending everything is okay when it isn’t.”
“Bold words for someone who insists upon always being fine, ja?” Klavier murmurs, another half hearted attempt at humor that falls flat in what little space exists between them.
Apollo still lifts the edge of his lips in a small, humored smile of concession. “In court, maybe. But not with you. We all need to be vulnerable, sometimes.”
The breath that Klavier exhales wavers under the strain of unspoken emotions, his eyes fluttering closed just as Apollo leans forward to place a featherlight kiss against the center of his forehead, against his cheekbone, against the corner of his downturned mouth.
“You can trust me, Klavier,” he concludes. “I’ll always be here, whenever you’re ready, okay?”
Klavier finds he does not have the words to respond, then, even as the sound of fabric rustling against fabric fills the air and the hands holding Klavier’s wrists retreat. Their absence is felt immediately in the lack of warmth as Apollo slides back off the couch and onto his feet.
“Apollo?”
Apollo’s footsteps stall halfway through the door.
Klavier still finds he needs to clear his throat before he can continue to speak, swallowing back the sentiments that have collected there that he is otherwise unable to express. “Could you stay? Bitte. Just for a moment.”
This is a weakness Klavier should not afford himself. It is selfish to ask Apollo to comfort him when Klavier cannot even bring himself to explain precisely why he requires it. But Apollo’s eyes are soft when they find Klavier’s gaze once again, inexplicably fully of acceptance and, beyond that, what Klavier knows is love.
“Yeah,” he nods, “of course.”
Apollo stays far longer than a moment, his fingers combing through the strands of Klavier’s loose hair under the fading light that filters in though the slightly open window. They don’t speak, but the steady rhythm of Apollo’s breath in the otherwise silent room, the gentle pressure of his fingers, is enough to distract him from the tumultuous cascade of his own thoughts.

its 4:28 am, i don’t know what this is, and i don’t know what part of me thought it up but please take it and be kind
Keith nurses his bloody nose in the dark of the hallway, locked out of his own room, and tries to convince himself the sting in his nose is from the fracture and not from the tears building up.
He’s not a young ‘punk’ anymore, but he’s right back where he started anyway. He’s older, wiser— or he was supposed to be— but being a defender of the universe didn’t stop him from getting mugged on the side of the road in the middle of the night— because of course it wouldn’t. No one was immune, and Keith was stupid.
He’d been lost in thought so deeply that they’d managed to tackle him to the ground easy. The rest after that was less easy, and he’s sure he’d given them back twice as much as they’d done to him— knife wound to the thigh and bloody nose, obviously— but they got away with his wallet and his keys, and
His dog tags. Shiro’s dog tags, actually, because they’d gone to a dinky little store and gotten them privately engraved, maybe as a joke or maybe as something more. But now it was gone, lose to the abyss of petty crime, and Keith’s neck felt ripped bare without it. He should’ve kept it safe, kept it in his room and hidden out of sight until he needed it, but he was too cocky these days.
It was a wake-up call, but he wishes it hadn’t been so expensive.
He knows if he turns to Shiro— goes to find him and ask him to nurse him back to health— then Shiro won’t stop until he gets back what Keith lost. It won’t be worth it, whatever resources Shiro spends, least of all his time, but he wouldn’t care— and that’s why Keith is having a mental breakdown in the middle of the hall of the dorms. He didn’t even live here, technically. More of a courtesy for them, the paladins, to always have somewhere to come back to, but Keith was pretty sure that the sheets they’d been given were still stacked neat at the foot of the bed, waiting to be slid onto the mattress.
Keith slept at home with Shiro, cuddled against the cold under a plush duvet, pressing his cold against Shiro to suck away. And he always did, even if he pinched and tickled Keith’s sides in revenge.
Every time Keith remembers one moment out of the hundreds like that, he’d always been wearing those damn dog tags. Maybe it was karma, for showing off what wasn’t even his— Shiro’d never officially made a ‘statement’ after all. Never said Keith was his, or that he was Keith’s, and Keith usually wasn’t allowed such great things anyway.
Keith knocks his head back against the locked door. Blood rushes back up his nasal cavity, nearly drowning him, but he allows himself to wallow in the self-pity (and red-tinged mucus) for a bit longer.
Footsteps echo down the hall, just one pair of feet, and Keith shoves his shirt back up against his nose, readying the glare he’d shot at a few cadets a few hours past. He’s sure it’s not them— Galra purple eyes are terrifying at 3 a.m.— but it was still a public hallway.
But it’s not a cadet, not a nurse sent to come drag him to medbay, not even a ghost come to punish him. It’s Shiro.
He’s haggard, half put-together like a ripped page in a photo album. He’s stressing the edges of his hairline as he turns the corner, and his eyes— those beautiful cloud-grey eyes—lock onto Keith immediately.
He has blood on his shirt.
Keith shoves himself from the floor, letting his uniform drop flat against his belly again. He can feel his hackles raising like a threatened dog— like a feral cat ready to defend its own.
“What happened?”
He’s surprised at how rough his voice sounds, but it makes sense. Choking on blood and forcing yourself to stop crying does that to a voice box.
Shiro has a million things to say to that question. Keith can tell. He darts forward, and then forces himself to slow. Marches forward to crowd into Keith’s space, and just hovers. He says none of it.
His palms press warm circles against Keith’s cheeks— filling them red as they pleasantly heat up. Garrison halls were kept cool for some reason or another, and Keith had subjected himself to it for a number of hours.
Keith lets himself lean into the touch— the friendly touch— and doesn’t resist as Shiro checks him over. He finds the scratchy, jagged knife wound on his thigh, and sounds as if he’s gotten physically punched in the gut as soon as he passes over it. Keith tries not to flinch away as he’s examined, but Shiro is gentle enough that he doesn’t need to.
“What happened—” Shiro repeats, dropping to his knees to study the injury. Keith had wrapped his t-shirt, the one he wore underneath his uniform, around it, so it’d long ago stopped bleeding. “— is that you’re an idiot.”
Keith flinches at that, instead.
“I know.” He agrees, thinking back to the way they’d jumped him. If only he’d been watching his back instead of having his head in the clouds— if only he’d brought his knife instead of trusting Earth’s streets. He knew better.
“I don’t think you do know.” Shiro says. When he stands again, he’s all sadness, eyes red and lips pink as he worries them with his teeth. “Why didn’t you come find me? Why are you here?”
The accusations sting, and the tone is like a cleaver against bone. “Didn’t wanna worry you.”
If Shiro were a weaker man— if he hadn’t died and been brought back to life and fought a dictator and a sadist and saved the planet— he probably would have stumbled back and fainted on the spot.
He repeats Keith’s words back, quiet. When he reaches for Keith again, the grip is stronger. He circles his arm across Keith’s shoulders and tugs him close, helping him balance even though Keith didn’t really need it.
“Sorry.” Keith says, only partly so. “They took your.... Your tags.”
He’s proud of himself for not choking on the words, even as they twine up in his throat like weeds.
Shiro goes quiet, lost for the briefest second. It almost disappoints Keith— cements what he’s already assumed and made true in his mind, but Shiro lights up again. “You kept them?”
“Of course I did.” He says, aghast.
He steps wrong on his leg and he goes down without a pained noise. Shiro catches him before he face-plants, but his hands shake as they press against the small of his back.
“Tried to, anyway.” Keith adds, teeth gritting.
“Oh, Keith.”
Shiro stands again, hooking himself further under Keith’s arm. He carries him like that, drags him some of the time as the rush of pain drains Keith of all his strengths and all filters.
He trusts Shiro not to take advantage of that— knows he wouldn’t.
Kosmo is waiting outside the front step of their studio apartment. Shiro had insisted on not needing that much space, and Keith had liked having the open floor plan— less dangerous that way— and Kosmo liked being able to watch them from every angle.
Keith is near the point of passing out when Shiro drags him inside. Once they’re past the threshold, and there’s more room, He hooks Keith’s legs over one arm to carry him easier through the living room.
He’s laid on the bed, bloody mess and all, and Shiro leaves him.
Keith doesn’t panic, only because he can see Shiro’s figure— blearily, but enough— as he whirlwinds through the bathroom.
He returns with towels and painful spray to keep away the infection— and a shirt of his for Keith to change into. Keith struggles to sit up, to peel himself from the cloud-pillows he’d sunken into, but Shiro easily urges him back down with one touch.
Keith drifts, and Shiro fixes him. He wipes away the blood, picks at the lines that had dried and crisped at his nose, and washes it away with a warm rag. He passes his lips across Keith’s cracked ones to kiss them better.
Keith didn’t want to be oblivious, but he didn’t want to read into it, either. Not if Shiro would pull away— not if it would get wrenched from him after dangling so close.
Shiro wipes away the hot tears that spill over, and Keith is grateful that the heat blends in with the washcloth.
When he’s wiped up, and Keith has nodded off a couple times, only to come back to life when he sinks to deep and finds himself scared of falling, Shiro still stays.
He watches Keith doze, watches him come out of it ready to fight, and watches him accept the gentle touch to his chest to calm down.
Shiro aches all over, and he wishes he could take away the hurt in Keith, too.
He drags his finger through the thick, long hair that’d grown out of Keith’s head. It’s not a surprise— it’d always been thick when he was younger, but it’s smooth and easy to card through, and Keith’s shoulders relax as he scratches along the scalp.
Shiro braids it up. Into something loose, just to keep it out of the way, and it’s messy in the back where he doesn’t want to lift too much and disturb the lulling rest Keith gets in the early morning dusklight.
When he finishes, Keith’s irises peek at him from beneath his lashes, swimming and dark. Shiro gathers his hand up and squeezes, palm to palm until it feels like Keith isn’t going to float off and disappear on him.
“I’m sorry I lost your dog tags.” Keith whispers. Ashamed.
Shiro fingers at the blood spot on his shirt. Digs around his pocket. Plucks a chain of silver and dangles it in front of Keith’s face before he sets it down against Keith’s shivering palm.
He doesn’t explain how he got it, doesn’t explain the wallet and keys the he plucks from his chest pocket, either, and Keith isn’t sure he wants to know.
From the back of his mind, he feels a self-satisfied rumble echo. The Black Lion and the Atlas-Captain used to be the same person, after all.
Keith lets the trinket dangle in front of his face, would be shocked silent if not for the unbidden whimpers that build up.
“I— didn’t realize you still had them.” Shiro admits. Ashamed. Keith’s were probably lost to space, taken and burned along with everything else Shiro had had on him when he was stolen from Pluto.
“Always.” Keith breathes. He presses the engraved metal against his lips, breathing in the sharp tang of aluminum. “I love you.”
It comes out reflexively, brought forth by the habitual practice Keith had taken to when he was much younger, and he’s mortified how easy it slips out.
Shiro sighs. He rests his head against the bone of Keith’s hip, savoring the heat Keith radiates. “I love you, too.”
“Like a brother.” Keith replies, wryly. He presses the tags to his chest, to calm his heartbeat.
A gentle touch, to brush away the hair that’d fallen out of its braid.
“I love you,” Shirogane Takashi repeats, “The way you love me.”
He’s sure of it, from the way he says it. Keith didn’t want to be oblivious but— he shakes as Shiro kisses him again, soul heavy and spilling like an overflowed pool.
Kosmo climbs onto the bed to settle beside him, staring him directly down to the core. Keith lets his head fall back, and Shiro pulls back with one more squeeze. The covers tuck across Keith’s chest; the shirt useless now, because Shiro isn’t sure how he’d get it on without disturbing him again.
Keith wasn’t sure how he was allowed to have something so great— something so precious as love from the one he loved, too, but
The dog tags were a pretty good reminder.

Years & Years star Olly Alexander: 'The landscape has changed for queer artists'
Growing up in Blackpool, Olly Alexander lived next door to a church. As a young gay man, that presented him with a dilemma.
"I was always aware that, in the bible, homosexuality was viewed as sinful and that's always stayed with me," says the singer.
"But I really love religious iconography and religious language because it's so powerful and so evocative... so now I love to play around with that and subvert it."
He certainly achieves that goal on Years & Years' recent single, Sanctify, which characterises being gay as a sacred act. ("Maybe it's heavenly," sings Alexander in the bridge.)
"I love a bit of drama," laughs the singer, "and it doesn't get more dramatic than sanctifying your sins when you pray."
The 27-year-old was inspired to write the song after a brief relationship with a straight man.
"He told me was straight and we became friends, and at a certain point the relationship tipped over into something more intimate - and it felt like we were becoming lovers," explains the singer.
"And suddenly, there was just an explosion of pain and conflict."
The lyrics acknowledge the central tension of the relationship - with Alexander playing both the devil who tempts his lover to "sinfulness" and the angel who "walks through the fire" to help him explore his sexuality.
"I've been out as a gay guy for nearly 10 years, and I know how that journey of coming to terms with your own identity can be really painful," he says.
"I wanted to write something that spoke to that experience."
The single - Years & Years' first new material since 2016 - forms part of a larger, mainstream cultural movement addressing sexuality and gender fluidity; via films like Call Me By Your Name and Love, Simon, and the lyrics of gay and queer artists such as Frank Ocean, Christine & The Queens, Muna and Troye Sivan.
"The landscape has changed dramatically for queer artists," says Alexander.
"In the past, we've all been familiar with pop stars coming out in the middle of their careers, or after they've become huge and that feels like a heavy narrative to queer people.
"Now it seems to be really changing that artists can be out from the start of their career; and it's not some sort of sensationalised headline.
"Of course, there are people who still really struggle with being out, and I know some artists think it might damage their career - but I don't think the tabloids making a splash about sexuality would still happen.
"I think - I think - we can call that progress."
'Barriers to overcome'
Alexander made headlines himself recently, after revealing he was advised to keep his sexuality hidden at the start of Years & Years' career.
Was he surprised at how widely the comments were reported?
"I understand why it's a story," he says. "I think lots of people are shocked when they hear about homophobia, because they think, 'Oh, it's 2018, surely everything's fine now?' But queer people know that it's not.
"There's so much stigma still around being who you are, and there are still so many barriers to overcome.
"So it's an exciting time - but we've got a long way to go, and I think we need to stay vigilant".
Alexander has emerged as one of music's leading voices on sexuality and mental health since Years & Years won the BBC's Sound Of 2015.
"A lifeline to troubled young people," is how the Observer described him in 2016; while Gay Times wrote he was "one of the most influential gay pop stars of this generation," adding with a flourish: "All hail the King!"
The singer has spoken candidly about being bullied at school, and how he was burdened with anxiety and depression because "society taught me being gay was not normal".
Even now, he says "romantic relationships [are] quite hard because there's a lot of emotional trauma and emotional baggage that is kind of present".
"I'm kind of a self-sabotager," he says. "And there's so many reasons for that - but I should save those for my therapist."

Years & Years' second album, Palo Santo - launched this morning with a short film featuring Dame Judi Dench - is an intoxicating brew of streamlined, kinetic electro-pop that's haunted by bad relationships.
From the boyfriends Alexander dumped or was dumped by, to his estranged father and the "enemies" he battles on a song called Karma, it sounds like the star's been put through the wringer over the last couple of years.
"Oh, does it?" he says, surprised.
"I always present a confident, optimistic front in my daily life, and I try not to let negativity come through. But in songs, that's how I process those emotions and complex feelings. So I don't know that I've been through the wringer, as much as this is just how I process my experiences."
Still, there are quite a lot of break-ups on the record.
"Actually, you're right. It's quite a petty album," he concedes. "When I listened to it all the way through, I was like, 'Wow, I was so angry!'
"But it's good to show that stuff, you know? I think it's human."
Not everyone agrees. Someone close to the band recently told Alexander his lyrics were "not accessible enough".
He won't say who - but they're wrong. Alexander's unvarnished account of his demons, desires and doubts is what makes fans clasp Years & Years to their hearts.
The best pop music, after all, is written by outsiders for outsiders.
"I think so," he agrees. "Pop can be a Trojan Horse. You can dress it up as a dancehall banger but actually it can have a deep meaning inside of its shiny coating."
That's exemplified on Hallelujah, a frisky disco track about the joy of dancing with strangers that also looks at the loneliness of random hook-ups.
"I used to go clubbing a lot, and a lot of that time it was because I wanted to meet somebody," explains Alexander.
"I just wanted to find a connection and it didn't matter who it was, sometimes. There was a real, almost dark energy that was propelling me to keep going out. But there was also a redemptive quality to doing that.
"I think a lot about how clubs are almost like queer churches. You go and congregate and you dance. That's always been a sacred experience for me, although it's been both positive and negative. I wanted to write a song that flitted between those two things."
Does he still go out clubbing, or has fame made it impossible?
"Not as much as I used to, for sure. There have been a couple of times where people just want to take pictures of you.
"And the last place I want to have my picture taken," he says, a grin spreading across his face, "is when I'm embarrassing myself in a sweaty drunk mess in a club."
As for relationships, Alexander says "all options are on the table" - but one in particular stands out.
"What I think would suit me was if I was in a thruple and the other two guys lived in a house nearby," he laughs.
"I could visit them every now and then and they'd cook me dinner, and then I could just go home and watch TV by myself."

Radiohead: OK Computer
9/10
Radiohead’s landmark 90′s album is brilliant. Dealing with themes of isolation, the increased need for technology in the modern age, aliens, romeo and juliet and even karma. They handle these topics in the kidst of some of the most unique production I’ve ever heard. That’s nott o say the albums sound is completely original, it borrows from My Bloody Valentines Loveless in its’s huge sound and gives me a little bit of a Joy Division vibe? Go listen to Joy Division’s closer. It has an equally cold feeling to it.
The album opens with the epic ‘Airbag’ which comes across like a louder Nirvana until after that initial burst of electric guitar, where the synthesizers come in and you notice the albums chilling production and feeling. I cannot stress enough how cold this album makes me feel. Thom Yorke talks about having survived a car crash, and that he is born again. A metaphor for surviving a near death experience. I think the driving nature of this song is just amazing, mostly because it adds to the flow of the album as a whole, but also because it is so loud yet so cold. I think the moment where it gets the saddest are when the backing vocals come in. They don’t even say anything, its more like a “ahh, ahhh, ahhh” in a very soft and rather melancholy way. But its with so many people making this noise that it feels like a much larger misery.
The second track, Paranoid Android, is very complex for anyone who has never listened to it before. The song has three parts, doesn’t use anything to hook you into the song other than pure melodic bliss. (The structure of the song is complex so puts the majority of people off). The album itself consists of songs that are complex, take multiple listens to fully grasp but are brilliant.
The album receives a lot of praise but this praise isn’t entirely met by the album itself. I personally find it is perfect up until the change between ‘Electioneering’ and ‘Climbing Up The Walls’. Electioneering being a huge, fast rocker and Climbing Up The Walls being a slow, acoustic build up to a climactic finish. The rest of the album afterwards feels like one huge outro from ‘No Surprises’ until ‘The Tourist’. This wouldn’t be so bad if the track before ‘Electioneering’ wasn’t an interlude.
Other than the awkward track listing in the second half, the album is incredibly good. The song writing is stellar from beginning to end. Thom really knows how to write a dark song. One of my favourite tracks here, ‘Let Down’, has a lyric about growing wings and them being ‘Hysterical and useless’. The wings possibly representing biblical imagery and then crushing it but in such a genius fashion. The song ‘Exit Music for A Film’ is another fantastic track here (all the tracks are fantastic) and it was intended for the modern take on Romeo and Juliet. The scene where Romeo kills himself and Juliet does the same, is supposed to be captured by this song. And you can really feel the tragedy.The song is miserable. I love how in the fist verse he sings ‘Today we escape, we escape.’ But in such and hopeless tone. As if he’s recalling what he promised a love one before watching them die.
The tracks are all brilliant in their own right, but ones that really deserve mentioning in my opinion would be ‘No Surprises’ and ‘The Tourist’. No Surprises is quite the tragedy itself talking about a perfect life, or what society tells you is perfect, yet revealing a hidden melancholy. In my opinion, this is a reflection on the idea of a perfect life we have built being displayed before us in complete honesty, displaying the greatest flaw of it that as humans we are fragile, and aren’t all content with the idea of a perfect life, handed to us by society. And Thom brilliantly conveys that trapped feeling and possibly even ideas of suicide.
‘The Tourist’ deals with the main theme of the album. Technology. The lyrics talk about a character driving too fast and being told to ‘Slow Down’. The way Thom puts so much emphasis on the words “Idiot, slow down. Slow down.’ His message is clear. It is a warning that we need to slow down our progression into this technology driven world. Perfectly capturing the anxiety created by this change.
The album has something to give on every single track. And I mean every single one. They all have a hook and lyrics you can look deep into. They are all masterpieces in their own right. The only thing that holds it back from a ten is simply the awkward flow in the second half.
