C.J.P NSFW ALPHABET
Captain John Price
Tumblr media
Not my GIF
A/N: these are just my ideas for him so may be different to yours, please respect that.
Genre: smut
Warnings: AFAB!Reader, smutty things through out
Summary: An A-Z of Captain Price's bedroom antics...
Tumblr media
A = Aftercare (What they’re like after sex)
John is very much a sweetheart after sex. He will gently rub your thighs and your stomach. He will whisper things to you like “you did so good for me baby”, “so perfect”. He loves to praise you and make you feel loved.
B = Body part (Their favorite body part of theirs and also their partner’s)
John is a thigh man. Loves your thighs. Loves to touch them, stroke them, kiss them, bite them. He loves to fuck them too. Would happily spend all day between them if he could.
He likes his chest mainly because he likes the way you touch it. How you stroke through his chest hair and cuddle into it.
C = Cum (Anything to do with cum basically… I’m a disgusting person)
Loves to come in your mouth and watch you swallow it. If he happens to come on you somewhere, most likely your chest, he will scoop it up onto his fingers and put them into your mouth making you suck them and drink down his come.
Long story short, if he’s not coming inside your pussy, his come end up inside you another way.
D = Dirty Secret (Pretty self-explanatory, a dirty secret of theirs)
I feel like he’s an underwear sniffer. He hates that he does it because he thinks it’s dirty but he can’t help it. When he’s doing washing and he has your pants in hand, he’ll always give them a quick sniff before throwing them into the machine. He did once also give them a small lick just to taste you.
E = Experience (How experienced are they? Do they know what they’re doing?)
John absolutely knows what he’s doing. He’s taught you a thing or two about how to pleasure him and yourself in ways you never thought was possible.
F = Favourite Position (This goes without saying. Will probably include a visual)
He’s traditional in the sense he loves the classic missionary. He loves to watch your face and the way your tits bounce with his thrusts. Its also easy access for him to come in your mouth and also he can go smoothly from fucking your thighs to fucking your pussy.
G = Goofy (Are they more serious in the moment, or are they humorous, etc)
Price isn’t much of a joker at the best of times. He has a very dry sense of humour so it’s not very appropriate for the bedroom.
H = Hair (How well groomed are they, does the carpet match the drapes, etc.)
John is covered in hair and he likes it that way. Downstairs it’s much the same. Its not obscene or anything but there’s a sizeable amount of hair.
I = Intimacy (How are they during the moment, romantic aspect…)
He is always a gentleman. He’s always romantic. He’s always pampering you, peppering you with kisses and soft touches. Whispering sweet words to you as he wrecks your insides.
J = Jack Off (Masturbation headcanon)
He’s not a big masturbator. He’ll only do it if he’s really desperate. But he needs you there to do it. Whether you be sat with him or on the phone if he’s away.
K = Kink (One or more of their kinks)
Breeding - he has big breeder balls and loves the idea of getting you pregnant. Loves to come inside you and watch it pour out only for him to push it back in with his fingers.
Public sex - in the sense that he loves the idea of getting caught but would murder anyone who did see him fucking you. He loves watching you struggle to stay quiet.
Voyerism - he loves to watch you get off. He loves watching you finger yourself or rub your clit. And he loves when you watch him. Loves when you tell him how to touch himself.
L = Location (Favourite places to do the do)
Again, he loves that classic bedroom. Either that or the shower. Loves to fuck you while you’re all soapy.
M = Motivation (What turns them on, gets them going)
He loves when you stroke his chest. He has embarrassingly sensitive nipples so when you brush over them it gets him hard immediately.
N = NO (Something they wouldn’t do, turn-offs)
He’s always hesitant to bring his work into the bedroom. He loves when you call him captain and all that but he does often stumble in deciding if he wants to do actual role play with you or not.
O = Oral (Preference in giving or receiving, skill, etc)
He loves to be between your thighs so he absolutely prefers to eat you out. But his dick ends up in your mouth at some point.
P = Pace (Are they fast and rough? Slow and sensual? etc.)
Rough but also sensual. Will fuck you until you can’t even remember your name but will be loving in doing so.
Q = Quickie (Their opinions on quickies rather than proper sex, how often, etc.
He’s not overly fond of them. He wants to savour you as much as he can. If he’s going to fuck you, he’s going to do it slow and steady….
R = Risk (Are they game to experiment, do they take risks, etc.)
He loves public sex and the idea of you both getting caught so yes. He likes to take risk. He likes to experiment with you as well. He wants to do anything he can to make you feel good.
S = Stamina (How many rounds can they go for, how long do they last…)
He can last surprisingly long. He always sounds like he’s going to give out after five minutes because of the way he grunts and groans but he’ll fuck you from dusk till dawn. He can keep going until you want him to stop.
T = Toy (Do they own toys? Do they use them? On a partner or themselves?)
John is a silly man and doesn’t want to get in competition with a toy about your pleasure. But he knows you use them when he’s not there. But you’re not using them when he is there.
U = Unfair (how much they like to tease)
He is a big tease. He’ll always start something he won’t finish with you. It drives you mad but he always makes up for it by fucking you silly.
V = Volume (How loud they are, what sounds they make)
He grunts a lot. Like..a lot. And he’s loud when he does it. It’s so hot.
W = Wild Card (Get a random headcanon for the character of your choice)
He loves when you wear thigh highs and nothing else. He just thinks there’s something scandalous about it. Something cheeky that gets his dick hard immediately. It’s just really hot to him.
X = X-Ray (Let’s see what’s going on in those pants, picture or words)
He is thick. Not all that long but the thickness definitely makes up for that.
Y = Yearning (How high is their sex drive?)
His sex drive isn’t all that high. He gets turned on by you a lot and quite easily and is more than happy to fuck you when you want him too. But he can go with out it.
Z = ZZZ (… how quickly they fall asleep afterward)
Price doesn’t really sleep much but sex usually tires him out. He think that you keep him going so he does get worn out and sleeps for one. But that’s one of the reasons he loves you more.

Here Is The Thing About Movies Now Vs. Then
There is a certain darkness to ‘90s movies, which is just not the trend right now and as a child of the ‘90s, I prefer the former.
So, for instance, Hocus Pocus 1993 starts with the witches murdering a child by sucking her life force
Tumblr media
like they dance in front of her corpse because they’re younger
Tumblr media
her older brother failed to save her
Tumblr media
and calls the sisters hags and so his punishment is to live forever as a cat so he can always remember his guilt for not saving his little sister
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
and when the mob from the village comes to burn them, they hide the dead child under a blanket while yelling that they aren’t witches
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
it’s HILARIOUS because it’s SO dark but also slapstick just like when they’re about to be hanged, the boy’s parents just want to know what happened to their son
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and she makes a joke
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Like, if you think about it that’s pretty fucked up.
This Hocus Pocus starts with Winnie not wanting to marry a boy and setting some houses on fire
Tumblr media
In the original movie when it’s current day, Max and Dani are being hassled  and get their candy stolen
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Max gets merked
Tumblr media
Thackery is murdered but then comes back to life because he’s an immortal human in a cat’s body
Tumblr media
they kidnap Dani
Tumblr media
like it’s a Halloween movie.
Hocus Pocus 2 is a movie that happens to take place on Halloween. There’s an undercooked storyline about friendship and an obligatory heavy-handed lesson about being sensitive to others’ differences with a dash of the power of sisterhood at the end. There are, like, one or two cool visuals and some atmospheric shots
Tumblr media
but overall it’s very safe and very sanitary. It’s like what they did with Aladdin. From two other posts of mine:
So I watched the “A Whole New World” clip for the Live Action Aladdin
undefined
youtube
and I get that the live action isn’t going to be the exact same as the cartoon but one of the things that I really loved about the original animation is the dark sense of humour. So before Aladdin takes Jasmine on the carpet ride, I kind of love that Jasmine thought Aladdin killed himself because she told him to jump off a balcony
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and the fact that they changed that is unsurprising but still has me like, eh.
[..] and one of my favourite parts of the animated version is that when they’re on top, we see Jafar and Iago humiliate the people, namely Jasmine
Tumblr media
and the sultan, who they thought looked down upon and humiliated them, which included Iago shoving crackers down the sultan’s throat.
Tumblr media
I do understand that the above scene might be considered too dark (it’s probably why I love it so much) but this Iago is just a parrot that literally did not need to be there.
Or it’s like the original Jumanji, I answered an ask about why I considered the original dark and the full post is here but an excerpt:
imagine being a kid who watches her friend being sucked into a game and then is chased out of the house by bats
Tumblr media
And no one believes you when you explain that your friend is gone because he was sucked into a game so then you have to go to therapy to convince yourself that what you saw was impossible because it technically is impossible and you even change your name because you don’t want to be associated with ANYTHING about that night because it was the night you saw your friend get sucked into a GAME but then he comes back twenty years later and asks you to continue playing that game and you legitimately think you’re having a psychotic episode
Tumblr media
and then you have the remake --- and don’t get me wrong I absolutely adored the first instalment of the remake, Jack Black was hilarious --- where, like, yeah you can potentially die in the game if you lose all of your lives but there aren’t really any nuances or implications that make you go, that’s pretty fucked up once you think about them, it’s just a fun movie
Tumblr media Tumblr media
which is, I mean it is what it is but I definitely finished Hocus Pocus 2 thinking it left no impression

Truly those calling it “bad writing” that Robin and Vickie share similarities doesn’t make sense. She’s not been given enough time to be more than just a love interest, but we do have some info about her:
1. Molly Ringwald inspo, giving us shorthand about being kind of a quirky gal. Hat! Visually, she’s similar to Robin, but that’s not a bad thing because literally similar interests draw people together. She is also skirts vs Robin’s trousers. Femme/Soft Butch! You’re telling me Vickie would wear a tie? Lies.
2. Likes goofy jokes, namely Steve’s joke about Muppet Tammy. Which, Robin doesn’t laugh at Steve’s jokes that much- she dismisses them, but it means Vickie has a bit of a jocular sense of humour.
3. Vickie also likes Steve’s brand of movies, not Robin’s- which is pretty fucking funny. Again, this is not making Vickie similar to Robin, but to things shared with Robin’s Platonic Soulmate. Like, bro movies? Stupid lil jokes? I predict Steve and Vickie having a dad joke competition next season & torturing Robin with how corny they are. People like to talk about the similarities to Robin, but not the similarities to Steve! That’s kind of clever drawing Vickie closer to one of Robin’s favourite people, at least superficially.
4. Talks a lot when one on one, but Vickie wasn’t nervous/flustered in the band scene, so we can infer in more crowded spaces she acts differently/subdued - as like she was in the War Zone. This is unlike Robin who does actually ramble in group scenes, like freaking out over the thing in El’s leg, the rabies bit, or generally a lot of Season 4 where she looses her “cool girl” archetype from Season 3 in favour of chaos. Vickie seems more like she would quietly panic, as opposed to Eddie, Argyle, and Steve who all loudly go WHAT THE FUCK. Which is going to be interesting to see as the whole town is now thrown into an open gate downtown Hawkins probably releasing demogorgons every other hour like it’s Pacific Rim up in this bitch.
5. Meaningful look with Robin in the War Zone- not “oh hi band friend!” A scared/caught/dismayed look that she was there. So there is a connection, and she broke up with her boyfriend after that connection. Anything more is speculation, but the way she wasn’t looking at Robin when she gave the “he doesn’t like Fast Times” reason lets the audience draw points and maybe she felt trapped? Like it was just an excuse to pursue a different interest? Obviously because music is playing indicating a romantic relationship. We don’t have much to compare Robin with on this one, but around Keith she still had more confidence and bullshittery trying to convince him to hire Steve when Keith assumed they were a thing.
6. Vickie also doesn’t seem jealous. Robin is jealous. She was livid at Steve for being the object of Tammy’s affections, but Vickie hasn’t seemed to even look twice at Steve- even as Robin looked over at him while she and Vickie had her last scene.
For such a short amount of time in the season, I think that we have a good foundation for similarities and differences to Robin. Also, once again, it’s not a crime to avoid “opposites attract” tropes. Having similarities is good! Like, the amount of couples I know that are essentially the same archetype of queer person is not even close to zero. Especially when it comes to older queer couples who got together in the 80s/90s, they kind of morph into being one granola bar of a human being. Kind of similar with straight people when they genuinely like one another.
I hope they flesh Vickie out, but like, we’ve gotten a similar amount of screen time for Mr Clarke but no one is mad he is “one dimensional” when he is just, some exposition science guy. He’s a stock and standard teacher, has a girlfriend, and kind of goes along with explaining shit without questioning why a lot. But folks love Mr Clarke. Is it because Mr Clarke isn’t getting in the way of your ship?
I never thought I would see the day there were some true blue f/f ship wars, but bruh, Robin’s love life isn’t an A Plot so give the writers some slack. They’re human, not the devil. None of you were gleeks and it shows so fucking much. None of you lived through “angry lesbians on the internet don’t want me dating you”.
Personally I’m looking forward to Robin and Vickie getting together and maybe hopefully kicking monster butt together- or at least, Robin getting a nice little badass moment defending her gal.

So I watched the first episode of the Paripi Koumei/Ya Boy Kongming! drama and it was quite lushly put together and nice, imho. I'm still not that healthy so I've just put together my rando thoughts while watching below.
The obnoxious Joker dancing on the stairs was a nice touch for the post-Halloween party scene.
Tumblr media
The show is visually well-composed, a lot of effort has been put into the composition of scenes, the lighting and the cinematography. While I'd say the manga has decent but not spectacular visuals, the drama is well-crafted as an immersive visual and auditory experience.
Tumblr media
The scenes set in the past feel heavily influenced by historical dramas and the visuals differ from the present scenes nicely. The heightened sense of reality works well in these moments as they are Kongming's memories/dreams/etc. rather than the present reality.
Tumblr media
Mukai Osamu as Kongming sells the entire show. He plays the dramatic scenes with heart but doesn't hesitate to throw all his effort into the humour as well. I don't think you could get much better live action casting for a role as quirky as this series' version of Kongming.
Tumblr media
Kobayashi having the full setup of Three Kingdoms miniatures in his desk was honestly a genius touch. It really helped them transition nicely during the culmination of Kongming's strategy at the end of the episode (something I had been unsure they could pull off convincingly in live action).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'd say the weakest link link the show thus far is EIKO herself. In this version of the story she lacks a lot of the energy the character has in previous incarnations. I'm also not sure if the additional moment before meeting Kobayashi (which shows her suicide attempt happened after someone busted her guitar) brought anything to her character either.
Tumblr media
I'm also not a massive fan of her songs in this first episode? They also lack energy imho. I just kind of sat there thinking "Yeah I'd go listen to someone else too" when she was performing during the episode's climax. Which is a shame, I love EIKO in the manga and anime so I really hope they lift her up a bit more in the drama in subsequent episodes.
I get what they were going for having her be a bit "flat" given how she feels her career has stalled before her encounter with Kongming, but I found her keeping that low energy while performing an odd choice idk.
Tumblr media
Watching "I'm Still Alive Today" being performed here you're like yeah, I get why EIKO is entranced by Maria (Avu-chan kills this scene). I didn't feel the same way when Kongming was entranced by EIKO during the Halloween performance though.
Tumblr media
I wasn't sure about how much they changed up Kobayashi's appearance to scream yakuza in the drama, but then they showed his stupid hair from behind. Immediately sold, no notes. Kobayashi here seems more intimidating in his new leopard-print attire, as if he'd genuinely kick your ass for EIKO. That then heightens the humour when he brings out his miniatures and is shown to be a total otaku. Good stuff.
Tumblr media
Mia's performance and overall vibe was pretty much perfect for who she is when we first meet her in the story. I like how the drama really does replicate these types of performances well with the lighting and the backup dancers, they do feel like real performances.
Tumblr media
Speaking of performances. Shoutout to the fact that the episode ended with this bit. Sekiguchi Mandy has incredible thighs. I find it interesting that they're introducing Maezono Keiji in the first episode (given he's from the Summer Sonia arc).
Tumblr media
Overall I think there's definitely enough here that's different to warrant a watch if you're a fan of either the manga or anime. From small things like EIKO just bringing Kongming to the back of the B.B. Lounge rather than her apartment, through to significant changes like Keiji being in it from the get-go. I'm keen to see how they pull it all off in 10 episodes.

While the similarities between Rayman/Ramon and Dolph are incredibly strong (and I wish more people did stuff with that in art/fic) , I think there is some very small but significant similarities between Bullfrog and Alex. However it’s less to do with their actual personalities (they’re drastically different to each other) and more so their narrative role to other characters
Both Alex and Bullfrog have shown to have a sense of humour and a cocky vibe when in situations, Alex having banter and giving Dolph a kissy face before jumping off a building, while with Bullfrog he laughed at Jade calling Sarah out for her hypocrisy and before fighting the three goons he spoke about his bubbles and the ridiculous nature of them
Though with Alex he usually left the heard work for Dolph to deal with and attacked Dolph at his most vulnerable, while Bullfrog took a lot of heavy hits before finishing off his opponents and has shown to be willing to put himself on the line for others
The bigger similarity between them is that both of them lean towards being a care taker/saviour in their relationships , regardless if that’s something they do on purpose or if it’s a subconscious trait
We don’t know anything of Bullfrog’s backstory besides a few clues here and there, with him being one of last of the assassins creed one of the most accepted possibilities. The same with Alex, but unless the BL manga or next season decides to expand on it , it’s safe to bet he had a more normal life compared to the frog assassin. (According to wiki he also has a brother in the crew games? Interesting)
We don’t know the full scope of the relationship Dolph had with Alex and while it’s safe to assume the official Ubisoft Yaoi is going to go in depth on it (we are living in a surreal timeline), the show has given hints in the cramped 6 episodes
What we do know is that Dolph was in an incredibly vulnerable and desperate position when he first met Alex outside that gay club. And even though the cast don’t have canon ages listed anywhere (besides being vaguely legal adults), it’s visually obvious Alex is much older than Dolph, and even if the age gap wasn’t huge (highly doubt it) , Dolph was basically a puppet who escaped his strings
This is a similar situation Bullfrog finds himself in , with Rayman being in an incredibly vulnerable and desperate position in their first (and thus far only) conversation. While Bullfrog is the younger one in this situation, he clearly has more unfiltered life experience and wisdom compared to Rayman whose basically a puppet at that moment
We also know that Bullfrog is fiercely loyal to his comrades even when he has only known them for a few days. Alex however used everyone around him like pawns to be discarded, even the love of his life who was ready to settle down
I’m genuinely now curious if Pagan Min was the first time Dolph walked in on Alex being unfaithful or if that was a recurring issue for them?
Kinda interesting how these similarities between the two only highlights just how different these men are and their relationships

About Back To Earth
Ok, i've now had a number of people question what exactly my problem is with BTE, and why it's my least favourite Red Dwarf series, so let me explain:
Some works benefit from metatextual humour and forth-wall breaking, for me, Red Dwarf isn't one of them. So the choice to have the characters enter the 'real' world and discover that RD is a tv series and that they are just fictional characters does not work for me, especially given that this ultimately goes nowhere.
Outside of the cutesy scene of a fan indulging in RD trivia, there's really no point to any of it. The characters don't really dwell on the fact they're unreal, they just go 'oh well better find our creator to get more unreal life' - they don't explore what they/their lives could be outside of the 'fictional' reality they've known (see Back to Reality for how they did it right and better the first time round). The closest we get in BTE is Dave's coming to terms with his failings and the seeming worthlessness of his life but being willing to keep going. It's interesting but it's been done before and after much better.
Most of the scenes in the real world are unfunny and drawn out past the point of tolerance - The tv store, the mall, the bus, Coronation Street (dear God, Coronation Street - I hate BTE on the basis of them going to CS alone tbh) - again, RD does not benefit from fourth wall breaks and meta humour. The characters also aren't that funny here, but nor are they poignant, except Dave - which is also an issue because this is an ensemble cast not a one-man show, it's fine for an episode but not a film-length special.
Then there's the Blade Runner of it all. If I wanted to watch BR i'd watch it, I don't come to RD for BR rip offs - and they are rip offs. This is not homage, pastiche, or parody, it's taking scenes from BR and inserting the RD cast with no intent or commentary (with the sole exception of the photo zoom-in/enhance gag which actually was a parody, just not a fresh or funny one). Truly, what's the point? If you're not commentating on those scenes through parody, or paying homage by referencing BR visually/tonally in a RD style, there's no point in doing it. It's a bizarre creative choice that does not work for RD, it just wastes time they could of spent actually exploring the characters and premise.
And speaking of the premise, it's an inferior Back To Reality. In BTR they actually explored what it would mean for the characters to learn that they weren't real and had completely different lives. The episode did an amazing job at making the world created for a single episode feel real and lived-in. The revelation that the despair squid made them face their worst fears about themselves (Duane Dibbley, Rimmer no longer being able to blame anyone else for his failings) and had them act in ways that made them feel as though they couldn't live with themselves afterwards (Kryten taking a human life, Dave being an evil dictator) made perfect sense when you rewatched BTR. None of this is true for BTE.
The choice to make their 'real' reality our actually reality felt cheap and unsuited for RD's universe and tone. All the characters but Dave felt like an afterthought, they had no exploration, no arcs, no point in being there other than the fact they had to be because it's RD. The revelation that the female relative of the despair squid causes joy rather than despair makes no damn sense - Outside of the end of their fantasy when Dave gets to be with Kristine what exactly is joyous about this reality? Rimmer getting one joke about being happy he's not actually Rimmer?
Why not have them go back to an Earth where they are famous and treated with reverence for surviving in deep space and making it back home? Why not have Rimmer promoted to Admiral and become popular and loved? Why not have the Cat meet several female cats who made it back to Earth and need good loving? Why not give Kryten an upgrade and all the time in the world to clean to his heart's desire? Why not have Kristine already back on Earth and ready to commit to Dave fully; love, kids, growing old together? Have the characters get what they most desire to fill them with joy, so much that they'd never want to leave this wonderful 'reality', only to have them eventually question why everything's too good to be true and realise they need to snap out of it because their real selves are wasting away in the real world.
Nothing about their time in the 'real' world is actually joyous, or happy, or pleasant, or fun, or any other positive emotion this anti-despair squid should be making them feel. The revelation makes no damn sense and only gets sillier the more you think about it and the more times you rewatch BTE.
Look, there are things I like about BTE: Craig Charles' acting is fantastic here - arguably the best he's ever been. We have the iconic 'I'm pretty cool' final Lister speech (which you know I love). For being low budget and quickly made BTE looks great - the cgi backgrounds and effects hold up really well (mostly, we don't talk about the mini-Rimmers). And i'm always happy to have Kristine back.
Overall, I feel as though BTE was an idea with a lot of great potential but ultimately was badly executed, and i'm annoyed by it because I know RD can do this plot better (Back To Reality).
I used to give it more of a pass because it was only three episodes, so unlike Series VIII the badness had less time to linger, and because at the time of release we didn't know how much, if any, more RD we were going to get. But now we have several new series and a new special (The Promised Land) that, though very flawed, showed RD can do long-form if it wants to, i'm less inclined to give BTE some slack. There are things to like about BTE, but the sum of its parts does not make up for the whole lacking.

Ardeth Bay NSFW Alphabet
Working on a little something new just need to do a little editing but while you're waiting have some more head canons on my latest character obsession
Tumblr media
A Aftercare
(What they’re like after sex)
He likes to hold you close as you both recover continuing to kiss you softly as he rubs his hands over your skin just wanting to
B Body part
(Their favourite body part of theirs and also their partner’s)
He loves your skin because it’s so soft he can’t help but want to be touching you constantly. You make sure to apply your jasmine scented body oil daily to keep it that way knowing how much he loves to touch you and the smell of the oil. If you really want to drive him nuts, you rub a small amount through your hair, it’s guaranteed to have him wrapped around you in no time.
C Cum
(Anything to do with cum basically… I’m a disgusting person)
He would never lay a hand on you until you were married and as such getting you pregnant wouldn’t be an issue. In fact, he loves to see your rounded belly as you grow his child, he thinks your even more irresistible this way. It’s because of this that he always likes to come inside you and nowhere else.
D Dirty Talk
(Do they like to talk dirty on the job? Do they like you to talk dirty to them? What sort of things do they say?)
He’s more likely to praise and worship you with words of love and encouragement than with filthy things thought he can get a bit borderline when you’re going down on him as he can get carried away.
E Experience
(How experienced are they? Do they know what they’re doing?)
He had a few dalliances when he was younger but once he took his oath, he realised the life of Medjai was not well suited a long-term relationship and he had no interest in brothels or ruining a woman’s reputation for nothing. He’s no virgin but hasn’t anywhere near the experience some of the other men do, whatever he may lack he more than makes up for with passionate intensity.
F Favourite Position
(This goes without saying. Will probably include a visual)
He loves any position that allows him to gaze into your eyes, though is partial to having you sat on his lap because he can hold you so much closer while still maintaining control.
When he wants to switch it up, he likes to get you on all fours and then pull you up flush against his chest, it takes a little twisting to get into position, but he can still kiss you breathless and the angle of his thrusts turn you to jelly in his arms.
G Goofy
(Are they more serious in the moment, or are they humorous, etc)
He has a surprisingly wicked sense of humour, but this tends to show itself in sly comments here and there and during sex is often not the moment for this. It doesn’t stop him grinning wickedly at you when he teases you. Generally, he’s so intense it doesn’t occur to either of you to find anything funny.
H Hair
(How well-groomed are they, does the carpet match the drapes, etc.)
He’s quite a hairy man thought not excessively just enough to look stereotypically manly without veering into werewolf territory. When he’s out in the desert he doesn’t worry about grooming down there at all even lets his beard grow out somewhat. But when he returns home or if you visit him at one of the outposts, he will take the time to clear up the jungle and shave.
I Intimacy
(How are they during the moment, romantic aspect…)
Ardeth is a very passionate, intense, loyal man which often translates to soft sensual touches that make your heart overflow for him.
J Jack Off
(Masturbation head canon)
Sometimes the only thing getting him through the long, lonely nights in the desert is thoughts of you. However, he doesn’t always have the privacy to be able to do anything more than think about you. This can mean he returns from weeks or months away and pretty much carries you straight to bed, he needs you repeatedly after that much time apart with no relief.
K Kink
(One or more of their kinks)
It took some time to convince him, but he did finally indulge you and tie you to your bed. He was extremely uncomfortable at first as he was worried about hurting you, but he unexpectedly loved it. He doesn’t want to indulge all the time because his fear returns full force in between but on occasion he will whip out the rope using the excuse that he wants to try a new knot he’s learnt, despite the fact that you’re more than willing excuse or no excuse.
L Location
(Favourite places to do the do)
He wants privacy for you both so at home in your own bed is his reference. He makes an exception for his chambers at the mountain outpost, but with only a curtain separating you both from the rest of the outpost you do have to be quieter than normal.  He has also been known to draw you into the armoury after training but that’s only because he hasn’t the patience to wait to get you home.
M Motivation
(What turns them on, gets them going)
Showing a little skin is a foolproof way to get his attention. Wearing your caftan with the long thigh high split around the house when you’re just doing everyday household chores, get you tossed over his shoulder and escorted upstairs in double time.
N NO
(Something they wouldn’t do, turn offs)
He will not hurt you period end of sentence no will he give up control for the same reason. He got carried away the first time you slept together, which was also your first time ever, when you bled slightly after he thought he’d hurt you and was horrified. He fled to the spare room and wouldn’t come near you for quite some time, until you figured out what had upset him and were able to assure him you weren’t hurt. It still plays on his mind though even to this day.
O Oral
(Preference in giving or receiving, skill, etc)
Both, he has been known to pull multiple orgasms from you in one session to the point you’re begging him to stop. He loves it when you go down on him as it allows him to give up some control without any risk of hurting you, because of this he would never hold your head while you pleasure him let alone push down for fear you would gag.
P Pace
(Are they fast and rough? Slow and sensual? etc.)
Slow, sensual and powerful is his go to, occasionally he will get a little rougher with you, but his pace is always carefully controlled and measured for maximum pleasure while making it last longer for the both of you.
Q Quickie
(Their opinions on quickies rather than proper sex, how often, etc.)
A quickie with Ardeth isn’t exactly a quick as he no interesting in just ploughing you into a wall and moving on. He wants to take his time with you ensure you feel loved and safe. The closest he gets to quick are the times in the armouring after training but even those sessions run long to the point that you’re shocked you haven’t been caught yet. What neither of you know is that the armoury guards have caught on and will always guard the door until your done and then discretely make themselves scarce, so you never even know they were there. Ardeth suspects because of the knowing smiles they shoot him later the same day, but he chooses to ignore it.
R Risk
(Are they game to experiment, do they take risks, etc.)
He’s happily experiment with any position or technique you want to try but he’d never put your safety at risk. Neither would he risk exposing you in any way… with the notable exception of the armoury.
S Stamina
(How many rounds can they go for, how long do they last…)
The man is built for endurance he could fight Anubis stay up all night trekking through the jungle, fight Anubis warriors in the morning, spend 4 -5 hours on horseback see to his men and still rock your world so thoroughly you’re seeing stars. I know that’s an incredibly specific example, but it’s happened at least once.
T Toy
(Do they own toys? Do they use them? On a partner or themselves?)
The 1920/30’s were not known for a plethora of sex toy options. You have both heard about a device called a vibrator but have never tried one. Ardeth doesn’t believe any electric device could be any better than what you already experience together, and you completely agree being more than satisfied with your sex life.
U Unfair
(How much they like to tease)
Usually, he’ll deliver orgasm after mind blowing orgasm no waiting, but on occasion he can been downright evil. This often coincides with the time the ropes come out of the box under the bed.
V Volume
(How loud they are, what sounds they make)
He’s not excessively loud he’d rather keep your private life private and would hate for anyone to overhear you both. However, at home behind locked doors he feels freer to up the volume.
Generally, it’s whispered terms of endearment or general grunts of effort with the odd growl, but he does get borderline filthy when you go down on him
W Wild Card
(Get a random head canon for the character of your choice)
Nothing gets him worked up more than watching you school the young Medjai in weapons. He loves watching them underestimate you and then being eviscerated by your skills. This isn’t a secret to you but the fact that after the first session of every new group he corners you in the armoury for a quick intense session that leaves your legs shaking is only something the 2 of you know.
X X-Ray
(Let’s see what’s going on in those pants, picture, or words)
Canonically Ardeth is nearly 6ft 2in and solidly built so I think he’d be a reasonable size just borderline on how easily you can get him in your mouth but a little girthier than the norm.
Y Yearning
(How high is their sex drive?)
Varies depending on his schedule and how much access he has to you. Out in the desert it can wither away to almost nothing but back home he will be on you every second he can spare from his duties.
Z ZZZ
(… how quickly they fall asleep afterwards)
Usually, your sessions are so intense that you both fall asleep very quickly but always with your arms wrapped round one another.

In your opinion just what was it that made Bilson so magnetic, so captivating?
oh man, honestly who can say...... but all evidence points to the fact that he really, really, really was.
i mean, first of all, freaking look at him — part of it was definitely just that sheer leyendeckerian handsomeness that just radiates out of every photo and painting of him even a century later.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
if you're really interested in bilson i highly recommend the Seaver biography which of course is a polished bit of hagiography but does give genuine insight into his childhood/young adulthood and helps you see how he became who he was.
but i really like how spufford describes him modifying his youthfully severe asceticism after his bout with tuberculosis:
The peacemaking touch, the sweet temper, and the limitless patience his polar friends admired were also deliberate creations. They were the equivalent in his human dealings of the potato and watercress diet, and he had had to struggle sternly to stick to them. He would indicate disapproval by withdrawing - a damning chill would settle on his face at 'indecent' humour - but he had conquered a naturally caustic tongue. As a child he'd been known in his family for fits of rage when he would lay about him verbally, and Wilson the Cambridge student had sometimes talked daggers; these had gone, though at close quarters aboard Discovery, he wrote to Oriana, 'God knows it is about as much as I can stand at times, and there is absolutely no escape.' Expeditions required restraint. They could not work socially without it. Wilson's remorseless interpretation of the divine command to love thy neighbour made him, in this sense, a consummately gifted explorer. And he faithfully discharged the corresponding obligation he now saw, to look after himself so far as it lay in his power.
largely it seemed it was this combination of inward discipline and outward kindness that drew people to him: he was, as spufford notes, a model Edwardian of the most admirable kind— especially as one of the oldest members of the expedition, in his late 30s amongst a bunch of rowdy twenty-somethings who were (whether they were conscious of it or not) competing for his attention and care. hashtag M&Ms. he was invariably called "uncle bill" on the expedition—everyone viewed him as utterly reliable, and without fail he was a patient listener and confidant to all.
in frank debenham's 1952 memoir of the expedition, he devotes a whole chapter to bilson, describing him in the most loving, nostalgic tones. discussing the time spent in the Discovery hut waiting for the sea ice to freeze after the depot journey:
Yet to many of that small party it was the happiest period of the expedition. As Cherry-Garrard says in his Worst Journey in the World, there was "just enough to eat and keep us warm, no more—no “frills or trimmings.” To that I would add "there was Bill, and fewer people to share him with.”
and then later after discussing bill's spiritual and ascetic habits and hard working tendencies he adds:
But one is apt to give an impression of over-seriousness-of a man allowing no time or inclination for the lighter side of life. How false an impression that would be is clear if one recalls one or two of the many incidents that come to mind showing him with the spirits of a laughter-loving schoolboy. For between and amongst all the hours of hard work there were moments of the lightest gaiety when he entered into or led the fun that in every possible form made that winter the cheeriest time in the lives of many there.
now, ursula k le guin, discussing the power of scott's final record, observes pointedly:
His companion Edward Wilson, whose paintings are perhaps the finest visual record of Antarctica, kept a diary of the polar journey too. Wilson was a far sweeter, more generous man than Scott, and his diary is very moving, but it has not the power of Scott’s—it is not a work of art; it records, but it does not ultimately take responsibility for what happens. Self-absorbed, willful, obsessed, controlling, Scott was evidently an artist born.
this sort of stereotype of bilson as "sweet, generous" and often even "sainted" is certainly a function of the combined effects of Seaver's hagiography (produced with the cooperation of Oriana Wilson) as well as the collective recognition of Wilson by the survivors as dominated by Cherry's particularly emotional depiction.
because as we know from our look at the toxic polycule and bill's role in the breakup—his plain cruelty to shackleton out of loyalty to scott and to some grand, idiotic idea of geographic honor within the rarefied world of exploration—he was not perfect at all. which is what makes him interesting and even lovable from a historical distance. but of course that is a different phenomenon altogether than what those who knew him experienced, which we never can through the distance of time and text.
returning to spufford, who says:
I think this sharp distinction between self and world is the clue to him. In him the Edwardian taste for pushing things to their limit turned exclusively inwards. He would never willingly contemplate harming someone else, and the parade-ground fantasies of the period seemed dangerous and wicked to him. But you might say he drilled his own soul. Rather than assuming that the order of the world was unbreakable, and therefore safe for adventure, he had the martyr's sense of the world's fragility, and the likelihood of hurting other people if he did not apply the greatest delicacy and caution. Only himself did he see as the imperialists saw Africa, or the reformers saw the social system, or the warmongers saw Germany. Only when he looked at himself was his imagination presented with a recalcitrant lump against which strong measures were called for.
so did this "all-in" approach to personal improvement and discipline contribute to or create the powerful field of charisma that he gave off? or was he just naturally ~like that~, and all his effortful, excessive self-work merely additional?
reading what those who knew him have to say about him, it's apparent enough that words tend to fail when trying to capture those precise qualities which made him so attractive.
scott certainly tried, though. in his final writings he described wilson as "a brave, true man ... the best of comrades and staunchest of friends." to be near bill clearly seemed to inspire a desire to be better, to be good, at least enough to be worthy enough to stay as close as one could. and so at the end scott wanted to hold him, and so did.

Miraculous Awakening Movie - Review
WARNING
There are big spoilers in the text below and its author sucks at expressing her opinion which, guess what, absolutely no one asked for!!!
When this movie was announced, not only I struggled to welcome it as it was hard to understand how this would fit with the universe of the show, but also the character design was just odd. We adore the one from the series so why alter what is loved?
All this to say that I was never particularly hyped about the movie, but as a miraculer and a person who wanted to experience something that involved so many fans celebrating this show we all love, I just had to go.
I was square punched in the face by the visuals. This movie is a MUST to see on the big screen. Despite my hesitation towards the character design (which eventually grew on me), the musical numbers, particularly the romantic ones taking place in the sky brought me to tears. The colours, the low lights, the quality of the animation, the detail, the intensity of the characters (namely in the eyes)...*chef kiss* absolutely hit the spot.
Plot wise? I mean, it is literally if you wanted to compile the first 3 seasons of miraculous (no senti theories, lukanette, adrigami or,zoe though, more like season 1 plus Chat Blanc because we do get a WARNING SPOILER ALERT
"Chat Noir is Adrien, my son?" but with a Gabe completely out of character (based on his previous reactions to this in the series) and we get another reveal scenario which was very sweet but I felt like they could have played it differently ~SPOILER AHEAD~ I really loved Marinette putting his mask on and saying you can also call me ladybug but this doesn´t really prove she is who she claims to be right? I think she could have ended the one-sided reveal by using my favourite quote from the movie
Chat Noir "To everyone you´re the girl with the mask that saves the world, but to me, you are the girl who saved my heart" DUDE I sobbed (screaming internally because Marinette could have played with this quote as Chat Noir told this to her in private).
I sobbed with the romantic scenes in this film. Despite having to rush the romantic development between Adrinette and Ladynoir, it still felt very natural to my eyes which I was really happy with. Plus miraculous ladybug always knows how to play with my heartstrings regarding the love side of the story. It completely made me swoon (a big personal factor to have enjoyed it).
Nevertheless, the character development of Marinette, namely her overcoming her fears and believing in herself - exaclty what made me fall in love with her in the show and admire this charcter- instead of balancing out the romance, it became repetive and a bit exhausting. We are in the last 10 minutes of the film and Tikki is still preaching the same thing (don´t get me wrong, it is important to emphasise such message to the audience but I think they saturated it a bit).
Anywho, I think the fact that I went with no expectations for the film and accept whatever might come made me actually enjoy it more than I thought. A great part was also due to the atmosphere, which was so much fun. The audience was super vocal with their reactions, bringing a sense of community despite each of us being in our own little groups. We laughed (a lot, I completely forgot to highlight the humour of the movie *looks at careless whisper playing in the background everytime Adrien thinks of Ladybug*), screamed, cried and gasped together. So much fun.
I left the theatres quite elated but frustrated with the bloody teasing "almost kiss* scene at the very end. I actually believed I was gonna see Adrinette´s first kiss on the big screen but :)))))) JDNDJESINVIFESN. I also left incredibly confused because as I said, the movie doesn´t match whatsoever the series, and ended on a vague note - HEADSUP - After Gabriel is revealed to be Hawkmoth to both Chat Noir aka his son and Marinette/Ladybug, the dude just disappeared and we don´t get a reaction from Adrien?? It immediately skips to Adrinette (no complaints LOL) and then you hear Gabriel narrating a message to Nathalie to protect Adrien and never let him know that he hides Emelie´s body in the basement? The dad´s a bloody terrorist what difference doesa another crime make? Does this mean there will be a second movie? Will we forever live with God knows how many miraculous ladybug universes? "AMERICA EXPLAINNNN"
I have heard people who didn´t like it beacause it was purely fanfiction and didn´t make sense, I personally advise you to go with an open mind, chilled and with the intention to have a good time. I sure did! I will carry this experience with me forever <3 all this to say that my score may be also highly biased by that hahah. Byeee!
P.S - I did not comment on the music because I was a bit disappointed that the original French voices (warning the French dub is my favourite) were not the singing ones. They used Lou and Lenni-Kim which despite them being talented I didn´t feel like it suited them. So...I´m gonna wait for the English soundtrack to formulate an opinion. I liked the lyrics of the new song though (Last Dance soundtrack)

hiiii !! 2 4 6 and 12 (if you have one) for your obey me s/i? either one! c:
hi hi hi !! :D ty for the ask wheeeee also i MUST compliment your choice of numbers here. these are lovely numbers. some of my favourites genuinely
answers under the cut i KNOW im not gonna be able to shut the hell up !! im gonna do it for angel!ro because hes funny and cool i think
2. How similar is your s/i to you? Are they a carbon copy, completely different or a mix of the two?
Hmm, a bit of a mix, really! But also I do like to try and include my little quirks/idiosyncrasies where i can for my s/is because theyre very much a way that i express myself and explore things that aren't necessarily feasible for me irl . I think the main difference is my s/is are slightly less depressed. though that may be more due to circumstance and stuff. also significantly less time spent laying in bed due to pain/fatigue. but other than that (and the obvious physical differences) I try to keep the personality and vibes pretty similar to myself in real life where i can :3
4. How did your s/i feel when they first met your f/o(s)? How do they feel about them now?
To begin with, my s/i was definitely very ... not exactly intimidated by, but sort of .. anxious around Diavolo. Due to the nature of their relationship and the arranged aspects of it, he felt a lot of pressure to get along well with Dia and be like the 'perfect' spouse, since this marriage had so much riding on it (peace between celestial realm and devildom , blah blah blah, whatever) so at first hes very quiet and anxious and just afraid to speak up or make himself a nuisance in any way, so he'd always just smile and nod along to Diavolo's suggestions and jokes and sort of 'dull down' any gruesome answers to the questions he was posed about the celestial realm (though this is also in part due to the fact that things up there are very much Not As They Seem and the angels are uhh 'strongly encouraged' not to disclose too much information)
As time goes by and he gets more comfortable, however, he lets his weirdness really shine, along with his dark sense of humour. He and Diavolo wind up going through a lot together and sort of bond over that, along with their weirdly parallel upbringings, so they become really close and painfully in love. Like. 'will only use pet names for one another and always be holding hands' levels of PDA. It's obnoxious and codependent. Diavolo absolutely dotes on Ro, and Ro definitely comes to rely on him more and more as like.. 'his person.' He becomes more comfortable with unmasking and asking Dia for help with things (and if Dia can't, then he'll ask Barbs to). Theyre like two bonded cats. if you separate them they'll get depressed and start pining and become physically ill after too long. It may be a little unhealthy but like. theyre just hanging out. they like it that way. they can spend time away from each other, they just don't often really want to. They vibe like the most stereotypical 'straight guys who do really gay stuff for the bit' but they committed fully and are so so in love. theyve been around each other so much that they basically have their own language, etc. and are just so comfy and happy around one another that its obnoxious to look at i think <3 ro loves his big silly himbo to bits and vice versa
6. Has your s/i undergone any design/story changes since they were first made?
Hmm, I'd have to say absolutely yes, but genuinely I can't think of exactly what off the top of my head. He's kind of been adjusted a bit as i've fleshed out the ~vibes~ of the way i interpret the celestial realm, he got given haunted angel cryptid lore and lack of 'flock' attraction lore (theyre intertwined also) and put through The Horrors also. he also has his own more fucked up au with even more Horrors. just like for the funny. Visually though, his design has mostly stayed the same. I'm not really a huge fan of how his outfit vibes, but i think overall i do like his Vibe and hes very silly and parallels nicely with Dia!
Though looking at the pics below i havent entirely decided how i like to draw his hair. which is like blaaahhh bleeeh bluueeueueuh
12. Can we see a picture of your s/i?

tada!!!!! silly nya nya!!!!!

My girlfriend and I have been listening to the podcast (as part of my mission to fully induct her into Who, ~muahaha~), and we were having thoughts about the whole concept of the Inventor!Master after the most recent ep. And I feel like where I've come down is that-- I get the idea. It makes sense if you're trying to, like, do some back-formation and figure out where a character with the Master's psychology starts. Like, yes, I absolutely buy powerful scientific curiosity, the desire to know things (especially forbidden things), to *create* things, a thoughtlessly superior attitude towards the 'lesser species', even a level of self-serious pride that means he doesn't have much of a sense of humour. All of that works.
But the fundamental problem, I think-- and you sort of touched on this in talking about how sort of no-nonsense and humourless he is-- is that in order for the Master to work as a character, I sort of feel like... *they* don't necessarily have to be having fun (god knows there are plenty of appearances wherein the Master is Having A Bad Time), but *we* the audience have to be having fun watching them.
Villains like the Master are appealing because there's something magnetic, fascinating, *fun* about their presence in the narrative. There's an edge of perversity (in the original sense, not the horny sense :P) to even the most self-serious Masters that makes them just so enjoyable, and I sort of feel like if you haven't got that... then it's not really a successful take on the character. It sounds like they maybe kind of figured that out by Blood of the Time Lords? But welp, too late, apparently!
Hello, to you and your girlfriend, thanks so much for listening!
Yes, definitely all of this. There is a reason we love the Master, and it's because despite his evil nature, he's still fun! Right back in Delgado's first appearance his evil plan involves: a terrible clay puppet, an inflatable man-eating couch, sentient telephone cord, and plastic daffodils. They are all absurdly comedic methods for an evil plan, and when you add in Roger Delgado's charisma on top of that, you are left with a lovable villain. For the Inventor!Master, they take away the comedy and absurdity, and instead just have a villain doing a very methodical and scientific approach towards his evil, with an actor playing it very dryly. They don't really give you anything to love, he's just evil.
This moves on to another point we've touched on, and that's when the Master commits "real world" evil. For example, Saxon Master. In The Sound of Drums, he's cheeky, charismatic and fun. You laugh at him killing the cabinet ministers because it comes with a joke and a smile, it's absurd and not overly "real". Compared to The Last of the Timelords where it's suddenly revealed that Lucy has bruises on her face, a bit of "real world" evil creeps in. Overall we still like him as a villain but RTD has put in an unspoken piece of visual storytelling to show that he is a monster and we should remember that.
I'm rambling, but stay with me. The Inventor!Master in the Destination Wars is cultivating a war between two races, and fostering fascist ideologies within them. Again, this time there are no dance sequences and the actor has no where near the charisma of Simm. He's not even moustache twirling, cardboard cut out evil, he's real evil, the not nice kind of evil that we recognise in our real lives and want to reject. Not a daffodil or couch in sight. RTD gave the simm!master a subtle mix of that, but largely we still accept the character because on balance he is fictional evil.
Even in audio stories with Jacobi!Master where he is unimpeded by the Doctor and commit atrocities, we still love him because Jacobi has a wonderful presence and sense of the character. Our fun comes from hearing how he gets away with it, and how much joy that gives him. He's evil, but still has the inner core of loveability like The Master's that came before him.
I'm glad we never have to hear the Inventor!Master again because he's all the worst parts of the character. An experiment that just missed the mark and didn't pay off in any kind of entertaining way.
Phew okay, sorry for long response. Thanks again for listening, we love you!

Spoiler free Black panther: Wakanda Forever review in one word:
Powerful
Spoiler riddled, incoherent and chaotic brain thoughts about the movie under the cut. Read at your own discretion:
Okay, my brain is still a big old jumble from seeing the movie so I'll try and organise this as best I can.
First of all, that post credit scene was not on my bingo card. Baby T'Challa was not expected but oh lord the audible gasp I let out in the middle of the cinema was loud. I'm so glad I went into this blind because I think that's one of the biggest "holy shit" moments I've ever had in a Marvel movie.
Second, that marvel logo scene at the start. Talk about poignant. Holy cow. The collection of scenes from his time in Marvel almost had me sobbing in front of strangers. The cinema was dead silent and it was honestly such a touching moment.
Adding to the not on my bingo card moments, we have the Queens death. So not what I saw coming. I can understand why it was necessary in terms of the plot but damn it did hurt (even if she kind sucked in the movie but I mean we all process grief in our own way so she is totally forgiven). Her UN moment was so fucking boss. The way that scene was cut together had me frothing. Ugh, love love love.
The end with Shuri burning the outfit and remembering her brother. The way it all kind of built up to that moment and again the silence was just a great piece of cinema. Kudos to the editors for that one.
I gotta say, the Black Panther movies really have a way of making me love the villians. It's the way you can understand their motives and why they are doing what they are doing. Like you know that they have taken it too far and are proving their point the wrong way but you can sympathise with their cause. I really cant wait to see Namor again (and him being gorgeous is just a bonus)
I love that the movie still kept some of its humour from the first one, its why I love this franchise so much. It is so impactful and has such deep messages and conveys meaning so well but it's also light-hearted and fun and just a joy to watch.
Seeing Val was great. I like how we keep getting snippets of her as it builds to the Thunderbolts. She's a complex one and sneaky as hell but damn she is smart and knows how to get what she wants. It was good to see Ross again, even if he was reduced to a bit of a pawn. Adding their marriage to things that were not on my bingo card as well.
Also, M'Baku. That's it really. He really is just a fantastic addition to the movie and I fucking love his character so damn much.
I think overall the movie was fantastic. Held up to the original and honestly, in my opinion it may have surpassed it. The pacing was good, the storyline complex enough to hold your interest but still easy to follow. It showed the characters in a new light and once again, grief was the real villain. It let the characters be human and process their emotions in ways that aren't always healthy. It felt true to life in that sense.
The visuals in this film were sublime, honestly, it felt like marvel at it's best. The score really added depth to the story telling and it just felt like a true cinema experience. I loved it from start to finish and I know it's going to become one of those films I watch over and over and find new things to love each time.
10/10 flawless. I can't recommend it enough. If you're a fan of the first film you should enjoy this one.

Put On Your Raincoats | Wild Things (De Renzy, 1985)
Tumblr media
Like I did with my review of Ball Busters, I present to you some stray observations in scattershot form, not unlike the vignette structure of the film being commented on:
I didn't watch this to make a "We have Wild Things at home!" joke, because I haven't seen Wild Things (1998) and this was released first. I'm innocent of all charges, your honor.
This is bookended by a pair of roughie-style scenes. I think the first one is better, in that the female aggressors make it stand out against the usual genre dynamics and the latter has John Leslie doing some weird bear growl noises I found a bit distracting. Both also have neat twists at the end that go a long way in alleviating the sleaze factor that normally comes with these things.
Between the organ music on the soundtrack, the pointed shot of the cross dangling Kimberly Carson's breasts, her desire to make love as a means of procreation and her devout nature ("I'm talking to God here"), the segment where Herschel Savage tries to impregnate Carson plays like a middle finger to the moral majority types, although one could argue it's a bit more subtle than the usual evangelical characters in more overt porno satires (Spitfire, Friday the 13th: A Nude Beginning). This is also the only time I can recall off the top of my head seeing Savage with a beard, and combined with the leather jacket he's introduced in, it's a pretty good look. (Much better than the Gene Shalit 'stache he had in Skin Flicks.)
As someone who's made that same awful sitcom double date joke in too many reviews, I have a tremendous amount of respect for Elle Rio for following through on it. You see, the problem is that "there is so many men and how you say, so little time", and maybe she "should get a little book or something", so she "accidentally date two guys at the same time!" (For the record, I love her accent and her mellifluous voice. I'm not making fun, I promise.) And rather than suffer any embarrassment, she takes charge and resolves things in the most elegant manner possible given the circumstances. (Hint: it rhymes with "free gum.") Apparently this was added after the fact (the breaking of the fourth wall feels more in line with Ball Busters) but is arguably a highlight, making this not unlike a Heaven's Gate situation where a later release is supposed to be the superior version. Or maybe like the Snyder Cut. Definitely not like Apocalypse Now: Redux, where the additional footage kills the pacing. Bonus points for Tom Byron's terrible mustache and his insistence on kicking rocks at Jon Martin's car. "A lot of men, they don't have the kind of sense of humour like we girls do."
Maybe I'm still high off a rewatch of Body Double, but there's one shot where the husband is masturbating in the foreground and the wife is masturbating in the background that looks a little bit like a composition from Mr. BDP himself. Now if you just switched out the rack focus for a split diopter, we'd be in business. (This scene also starts with the wife looking at magazine layout with *shudders* Ron Jeremy, and thankfully that's where he stays.) And before you think I'm giving the movie too much credit visually, there's some pretty nice use of lens flare and shadows throughout. This is not without a decent amount of style.
Lots of great music throughout, probably a little heavier on the rock side of things (psych rock jams, garage rock, funk rock, maybe a little doo wop), but my favourite bit of scoring has to be the fluttering synths in the first scene.
While I missed the knockoff Troy McClure shtick John Leslie was doing while hosting Ball Busters, Jill Ferrar is not without her charms and has some fun interplay with the crew. Also, unlike Leslie she doesn't try to push a heretofore unheard of definition of the title, so definitely wins some points there.
Now, as for whether this is any good: if you like the performers, I can report they are in fine form, and if you are not yet sold on any of them, a strong case is made for all. (MVP: Elle Rio, for the record.) There's enough variation in the premises of each segment, the energy level is consistently high, and the film is not without a good amount of humour (and doesn't feel mean spirited the way I've found De Renzy sometimes can be). I'm assuming Howard Hawks never saw this (because it was released after his passing, unless he came back a decade later like Bruce Lee was prophesied to in Ng See-Yuen's Bruce Lee: The Man, The Myth), but it meets his criteria for a good movie and then some.

Across the Spider-Verse Review (mild spoilers)
I have finally seen the long-awaited sequel to my most favourite movie. Y’all, I am in love with what Sony is doing for Spider-Man these days. I have literally not been this excited to see a movie since I was 12 years old waiting in line in a themed outfit to see Catching Fire for its opening weekend, and I think this film lived up to that hype. I have some critiques, but overall it was really good. I won’t include any major plot spoilers, but I’ve tagged it as mild spoilers just in case you’re the type of person who doesn’t like to know a single thing going into this movie.
The good (not in order of importance):
1. More Gwen character development. She’s in this one in a much larger capacity than the first one, and all of her parts were awesome.
2. Soundtrack. I started listening it to it before I even went to see the film. It’s good music already, but it is such a different experience to hear it over the movie. The art direction for these films is SEAMLESS, the different elements blend so well.
3. The visuals. The animation is genuinely so beautiful, I would use literally every frame of this movie as a screensaver, and I would tattoo them on the inside of my eyelids if that didn’t mean I’d have to pick only one. I want to give the animators a big kiss on the mouth because this film is so visually incredible.
4. The fight scenes. I love animation because you can capture things that cameras just can’t. The pacing of the fighting was so, so good. It’s one of the only movies I’ve seen that keeps the momentum of its fight sequences and really lets you feel the energy of the actions you’re watching. It was unique from movies like the second Captain America, whose fight scenes I also LOVE, because of the way it followed characters with such fast and dynamic movement. Whereas the Winter Soldier had great representation of real fighting styles, Across the Spider-verse was able to make use of a lot of its characters uniquely-inspired movements like Gwen’s dancer style. It could also follow them while they did insanely complex movements - if you’ve seen Gwen’s first fight scene, you’ll know exactly what I’m talking about.
5. The new characters are unbelievably cool. All of them. From the design to their personalities to their theme songs, they were really well thought out. In particular Spider-Man 2099 and Spider Byte are so beautifully visually contrasted with the rest of the movie. The characters also felt very honest to their backstories. By that I mean it felt like the animators and storyboard writers really did their research into the people they were trying to emulate, both from a source material standpoint and a cultural standpoint.
6. Miles’ story in the sequel is still really interesting, despite him being established as a character now, and the additional dimensions this film brings to his character are super cool.
7. The humour is top notch, and very true to Spidey humour that has carried through all of its iterations. I especially liked the first altercation between Miles and the main villain. It reminded me of Letterkenney and VEEP in that I felt like I needed subtitles to get all of the jokes because they were so rapid-fire and because the characters were talking over one another. It’s a very organic brand of humour that I appreciate.
8. The inclusion of so many Spider characters was well handled. The MCU movies now essentially make no sense because of how much background knowledge you need just to watch one film. Comparatively this handled having literally hundreds of similarly designed characters really well.
9. It seemed like altogether (much like the first one) there was a lot of creative license for this film. My biggest critique of Disney movies is that they’re soulless because of how much they’re supposed to appeal to a wide audience to maximize profits, but this movie and its predecessor have actual soul. If I learn that all the animators were treated like trash and they considered this film their personal hell I will be crushed, because it looks like something that is the product of a lot of amazing minds coming together for an incredible project.
10. A lot of fun nods to the other Spider-Man films and games. Spider-Man PS2 is in there, and I think Yuri Lowenthal even does a voice cameo. I’m a big fan of the “don’t get me started on Dr. Strange and that little nerd on Earth-199999″ line.
The less good:
1. Way too long. This film did not need a 2+ hour runtime. After about 1h40 I started thinking at the beginning of every scene “this has to be the end now, right?” wrong. This film had a “first book of the Lord of the Rings technically just being exposition” feeling to it.
2. Too many heart to heart scenes. One of my least favourite things in cinema lately is trying to force feed you character development through dialogue. There could have been like... 10 fewer drawn-out heartfelt conversations and the movie wouldn’t have changed.
3. The two major conflicts kind of got lost in one another. I enjoyed both but after a point I was confused as to what the real issue was. I know we’ll see the resolution in the second part, but I felt at least from my first viewing that I was watching a second movie after a point.
4. No comparable “what’s up danger” scene. To be fair, I think that scene from the first movie is my favourite in literally all of cinema. I want to inject it into my veins, I want to breathe it like perfume, I want to wrap it around myself like a blanket. It is beautiful and perfect and amazing and I don’t know if it can be topped, but it was strange to have so many smaller moments that were supposed to be cool that were sort of lost in one another. HOWEVER I have to assume we will get another one in the second part next year. Miles’ character arc is obviously not done, so it makes sense that we will get something like that closer to the climax of the next movie.
Anyways, I will be seeing it a second time in theatres. I usually don’t see films in the cinema because it’s so expensive, but I will happily give this franchise all of my money. I cannot overstate this - I am genuinely looking at getting a tattoo for this franchise. Sony owns me and I am okay with that.

assorted manga comments
Berserk is back! I imagine that will inspire some complicated feelings for Kouji Mori, but I’m glad he has the means to continue his friend’s life’s work. It is something I very much want to do for Fall - I can’t become a translator like her, although I am now making progress in Japanese, but I wish to try and keep alive her love of languages and attitude towards life. If any of my friends left an unfinished work, and I thought they’d trust me to finish it, I would want to do the same.
Anyway, these new chapters don’t really move things forward too much, but they do show that Mori et al. can hit the same incredible visual complexity that they were under Miura. Not surprising because I’m sure they were drawing a lot of the manga even before Miura died. I just hope that they’re getting to work at a reasonable pace, because one person dying of likely overwork is already far, far too many.
I started reading Fire Punch, the earlier manga by Chainsaw Man author Tatsuki Fujimoto. I also read his one-shot Goodbye, Eri. It’s very interesting seeing multiple works by the same author like this: you get a sense of what motifs they find especially interesting, which in Fujimoto’s case seems to be getting dommed by a girl who’s obsessed with movies, and characters with healing factors.
Fire Punch is a big step up in grimdark compared to Chainsaw Man - it’s rare to go a chapter without at least one of attempted (sometimes actual) rape, slavery or dismemberment. It is an amoral world where human life has become very cheap and those with power are unafraid to treat people entirely instrumentally - where people with superpowers are common but likely to be used as human batteries or sources of meat. In many ways it reminds me of the earlier chapters of Berserk, but there is a certain harsh dryness to it, in contrast to Berserk’s shōjo-influenced emphasis on emotion; characters state their desires and intentions plainly, and it focuses often on characters who treat violence dispassionately. It doesn’t yet have the dash of humour that came in with Chainsaw Man, and its action compositions haven’t quite reached the same unbelievable level, but you can see the ingredients of Chainsaw Man.
I think Fujimoto is a very interesting author; he has a deep fascination with the structures of domination and cruelty, but also a very interesting eye towards narrative structure and especially cinema. Much like the film nerd guy in Paprika, characters will talk about filmmaking in ways that will be reflected in the design of the comic itself. Both Fire Punch and Goodbye Eri feature the device of a movie-obsessed character wanting to make someone’s life into a movie by filming everything that happens; in Fire Punch she’s much more determined to direct and edit, while Eri is more of a critic bringing out the art in the main character, and it does some fun things blurring the lines of what’s ‘real’.
The visual style of all three of these manga - especially Goodbye Eri with its motion blur, and most of the panels diegetically being shot from the POV of a camera - also makes heavy reference to cinema. Fujimoto’s ‘camera’ is very cinematic: he’s very good at drawing faces in perspective from a variety of angles, which allows quite subtle body language to be conveyed. And he loves his huge special effects panels of a huge building getting smashed to pieces. But despite this, his drawings of characters - typically with minimal shading - tend to feel like they have an appealing simplicity with the very even, neat lines. He has a particular way of drawing eyes which is very characteristic, I think. I should do some studies of it. His fire effects in Fire Punch meanwhile are absolutely fantastic - incredible use of value and texture in a black and white medium.
Made in Abyss also updated - plus we have a continuation of the anime to look forward to soon so that’s exciting. It’s the start of a new arc, which seems to mean a really massive update of something like 90 pages, which bring a bunch of new characters, including a really big girl which is fun... the new guys seem surprisingly sympathetic at first glance, which means Tsukishi probably has something really horrifying waiting round the corner. That man can do some crazy things with tone and rounded shapes - the sense of depth in some of his backgrounds! The MCs are getting really close to the bottom of the Abyss, so I imagine some of those long running plot arcs might come to a head - if not in this arc then maybe in the next. Honestly I’m kind of looking forward of the anime treating the previous arc just because there were so many characters to keep track of, so a second run through would probably be good lmao.
And... It’s not manga, but also read a few pages of Finder by Carla Speed McNeill. I really want to get a physical copy, but oof, £40 per collected volume is a lot of money. I think this is definitely a series I want to be able to fully concentrate on, so expect detailed commentary on that later haha...
