shen li has been in town for a couple of months ( est. early february 2024)

she does not have one at this moment... she also can turn stone into gold so she's been doing that for the time being.

where has your character been pulled from in their fandom?

((spoiler, violence, gore(?) tw)) shen li is being pulled from towards the end of episode 26. she's being pulled from after passing out by having these black iron rods that were twisted through her flesh/bone removed from her body.

has any magic affected your character?

yes, just a little bit. so, the ill matched 'spiritual aura/core' in her is not going to blow dc up in fiery blaze as imminently as it is in the show.

off the bat, as i was looking for quotes to use i've found that the subtitles are different depending on site. most importantly, on the title of the realms. i did watch on viki first so 'demon realm' is more prominent in my head over 'spiritual realm' so that is what i'll be using.

so, she is a demon phoenix general. she has many titles including azure sky king, her lordship, demon lord of chaos, and lord bicang. (these all could just be the same thing w/ different translations but just going to list them all)

extremely headstrong and 'for her people'. she'd sacrifice herself in a heartbeat if it would save her people.

she is a thousand year old orphan, believing she was born on the battlefield were both of her parents were killed.

she was taken in by the queen of the demon realm, who was also a great friend of her mother's.

she is a born and raised warrior. the general in charge of the ongoing war the demon realm is in.

the demon realm suffers from constant 'chimei' / 'monster' attacks.

in an effort to create a better relationship between the immortal & demon realms, she was arranged to marry one of the immortals in an effort to create a bridge & (hopefully) receive assistance with the monsters.

but shen li has always hated how the demon realm is viewed as lesser to the immortals & are always needing to bend to their will.

basically, she thinks all immortals are lazy lay abouts with zero worries and this marriage is not going to make anything better (and she's not wrong lbr).

so she runs away to the mortal realm... and ends up stuck in her phoenix form and mistakenly taken for a chicken.

and that's the end of the non-spoiler background (as this is all pretty much in the synopsis / first episode)

from here on there's spoilers. A LOT happens between the first episode and the 26th that i'm pulling her from. so this is really only going to be about the point i've taken her from and not an entire recap even though i could go on forever fr.

so, the point she is taken from she has been severely wounded and her powers are not at full force.

as mentioned above shen li had these six twisted iron rods removed from her body (ankles, wrists and upper arms). immediately prior to this, she was chained up and tortured for the 'pearl' / 'demon core' inside of her.

she still has the core, but it is unstable as it is not melding well with the cultivation training she has had.

basically, her body is on the verge of exploding. her skin is extremely hot to the touch. she doesn't feel it, but others will.

the magic that held her captive also messed with her senses.

every day a different sense works or doesn't work. so, she could be blind and lack the sense of smell one day then deaf and unable taste and touch another. it's a mixed bag.

so she is extremely vulnerable atm (which she hates).

even though she doesn't know much outside of war, she is pretty lowkey? she enjoys a bit of a mundane life and deep down longs for one.

even without her senses problem, she's not the type to just go around looking for a fight or a war to start/win because it's all she knows.

she really only fights to save others. so she while she won't start anything, she also won't sit by if her help is needed (even by people she doesn't particularly care for/have been disrespectful to her in the past ++ especially for people she cares for).

p much just trying to get a handle on her disabilities rn though.

random facts: big eater, even bigger drinker, weapons collector, saddened her red plume spear is dust (so she thinks), gets annoyed easily, is constantly fanning herself to cool off, can turn stones into gold, is seen as more masculine (from her name to hobbies to titles given and just how she holds herself), has a scrapbook filled with a leaf a day she has collected since being here— the leaves are like diary entries of how that day went (something she copied from xing zhi).

randomness:

worldbuilding: the world is basically split into three realms: mortal realm, immortal realm, and demon realm. the mortal realm is the lowest realm. the immortal and demon realm used to be one realm called the 'heavenly realm', but after millions of years of fighting, they came up with a truce of sorts to split it up.

found out the author of this novel also wrote heart protection (back from the brink that yan hui is from), so i think i must like their work ?!

All the jokes about Ken and horses are good but I just wanna say it's such a good parallel to how actual young men get swept into misogyny and the patriarchy.

Like they're told to believe it means men get to be cool and manly and have this power but with that comes extremely rigid commands of what they can be as a man and a cycle of self hatred for never matching those gender roles perfectly. Patriarchy tells men that if they just do exactly what is expected of them, then they get all the "cool stuff" that comes with. That doesn't work though when there's only a small group that actually gets that power, but men will keep trying to fit into those roles in hopes that they can.

In the end there are no horses or the myth men are told, it's just endless cycles of self hatred and ingroup fighting.

every time i see art of boxleitner and wordgirl in an explicitly father-daughter scenario i sit there gritting my teeth and fists clenched like thats not her father thats not her father thats not her father thats not h

#like nothing wrong with it ig.... ? like ur not evil and ur not terrible for liking it #but she has a dad. a pretty good dad in fact (well minus that one ep. lalalaala)#but steven is her weird uncle at best and strange neighbor at worst #hes a mentor and a trusted adult but still not her dad #and i know this owes to the writing of the show and steven is everyones fav blorbo (mine included!) but i very much dislike how in so many #cases this white guy is becoming number one dad to this child of color as if she doesnt have a loving family at home #like ive been thru the owl house trenches and im kinda sick of white favoritism esp in the parental space #like in the case of toh how everyone really fawned over eda being a “good mom” to luz while camilla was highly criticized for a while before #everyone warmed up to her . and even then i dont think she was wholly liked #despite her also being a victim of ableism and potentially undiagnosed neurodivergence. her good intentions doesnt negate the harm she #caused but thats a good char exploration and plot driver between mother and daughter and its a really unique exploration of motherhood ive #seen in kids tv. and its smth i envisioned for wordgirl and her own parents who are good intentioned but still have room to grow for their #kids.#i can see why steven is popular as a father figure bc we see a lot of him and he is a guardian figure in the show that wg misses but #i still think that a big part of wg's char is someone who is split btwn being a normal girl and a hero. in this case steven is her #“superhero dad” (i say this non-seriously just to make a point) with her real parents representing her “normal” side #and exploring how she reconciles these experiences and even these adult figures in her life could be interesting!#but cutting out her parents and only having steven as a father or primarily showing him as being doting and loving of wg kind of feels like #its ignoring a huge point of conflict for wg and also kind of mischaracterizing steven as well

like obviously it's always sad when the doctor regenerates but 13 makes me feel such a specific kind of misery and sorrow at how she was treated (and by extension how we, the handful of fans left standing, were treated) during her era like obviously her casting was always gonna be controversial but the sheer level of vitriol directed at her was so exhausting... and then on the other side the absolutely insane decline in interest even from the fandom itself like i remember how excited the entirety of tumblr was when she was announced it was literally unavoidable even when i wasn't on the dw side of tumblr. and then like everyone just gave up on her which yeah ppl are gonna lose interest if the plot is bad which don't get me wrong it is but when is it not? ppl survived 6 seasons of moffat but gave up after like less than a season of this? and that's the other thing it's just so fucking frustrating how all the horrifically bad writing somehow gets blamed on HER? like somehow casting a woman made the WRITING BAD??? THE WRITING DONE BY A MAN?? not to mention a man who's been writing for this show for decades now😭 and she's literally just a character but somehow the entire responsibility of just how shit her era is falls on her shoulders despite her being a made up woman on a screen which every shitty person still uses as a gotcha as to why the doctor should never have been a woman. and ofc there's the ppl who specifically disliked her personality coz she was too cold or too mean etc all of which are things ppl easily forgive or ignore or outright love abt any doctor played by a man and let's not even get INTO thasmin. like sorry this is so incoherent but im so endlessly sad about how the joy and hype of finally getting a woman doctor turned into everyone abandoning the show, including the people that were initially rly excited and hopeful like yeah i get why ppl hate the plot i hate it too but i have such a deep sense of loyalty to 13 idk I'll always cling to her with all my claws she deserved so much better both writing-wise and fan-reception wise😭 anyway...

i do like how sofia aged badly, in 99.99% stories when there's a 20 years time skip the aged women look unchanged at all which is more insulting than having a woman in her 40s gain weight and lose a tooth. noses don't work like that though even if they've been broken but ig it's a stylistic choice to make her resemble a baba yaga in appearance while keeping a strong and kind spirit

like thinking abt it my favorite type of game protag for games where you can make your own guy is the one that already has some hooks built into the characterization... like either you have a backstory vaguely outlined (like kotor2 exile always blowing up malacor V, durge always being durge, bhaalspawn always coming from candlekeep and being bhaalspawn) or some recent event having a deeply personal effect on the pc (watcher getting their powers, courier 6 getting shot in the head, the pc accidentally fits the nerevarine prophecy, Areelu kidnaps the pc). Like having that little extra something elevates the story and allows for more coherence bc the writers have those hooks to draw together whatever the game is trying to say and what story it can tell. imo

#quenthel special #like ig there are always attempt for these hooks but imo in for example in inquisiton or fallout 4 it doesnt really work #neverwinter nights 2 also had a very interesting setup that is similar #like i had a friend who treated games like this exclusively as like toyhouses for her to write her own characters #and was 100% interested in the stories she was creating through these and not engaging w the stories the games told #and like thats just not the way i would ever enjoy games like this...#i also ig love when games are less sandbox type and give you a lot of focus... like a more controlled experience #only game that i liked that wasnt like this was like... sims dwarf fortress and house flippers lol #bc i love building houses and decorating them...#df also just presents you with a lot of constant problems you have to keep solving and i enjoyed it a lot #but even then i was like looking up content made by other ppl to see what you can make w the tools avaliable
