Netflix pushed for the eradication of Sokka and Katara's arcs because they "couldn't quite translate" the themes from the cartoon for babies to the live action show for grownups

something i wish more western ff7 fans acknowledged is that this is a japanese game made by japanese devs in the japanese language. by playing in english (or another language of choice), we are playing a secondhand translation that verifiably does not convey things accurately, much less the devs' intent
if you're going to make an in-depth analysis video on the lore, you need to consider the original japanese
if you're going to say that fans weren't supposed to know a certain plot or worldbuilding detail because it wasn't stated explicitly in-game, you need to consider the original japanese
if you're going to mock a character's dialogue as being terrible and evidence for a game being terrible, you need to consider the original japanese
i am aware the language barrier exists and there's no way of truly understanding 1:1 without a ton of difficulty and effort most people aren't willing to invest. that's fine! no one has to if they don't want to! but before people open their mouths and say things as an 'authority' with their entire chest, they need to consider that they don't have the full picture and may be wrong, because in all of these examples i have listed above, the person in question was very wrong because they didn't know what the game actually said.

i simply do not understand the drive of some people to put down any attempts to improve, to get to a 'normal' level of kindness, productivity, healthiness, etc as "the bare minimum," which isn't 'worth praising.' humans respond positively to praise, and continue to do good things when it means good things are said to them or happen to them as a result. this is elementary shit, and it's why people do horrible shit--it benefits them, so they keep doing it. to ignore this simple mechanic in humans is completely asinine and will make just about every effort you make to improve things much harder. does a child learn to love reading if you huff at them and say that it's the bare minimum when they read their first book? does a teenager learn to respect themselves if taking care of themselves gets them seen as preening self-service? does a parent get to learn from their mishandling of their child raising strategies and figure out that they've improved things via positive feedback? or are all of those things 'the least they could do' and not worthy of praise? what a bizarrely cruel, shriveled mentality some people have.
i had initially replied this in response to someone being weirdly mean about someone fixing their parenting, but i figure it fits better as a post because quite frankly i find that mentality exhausting.

Please DC writers…
I’m begging you…
It is completely possible to make whatever point you want to make without using a character as a prop.
“Two characters have a conversation where one is a strawman who is clearly wrong and the other is my mouthpiece who is clearly right” != “Show, don’t tell.”
That’s just telling with extra steps! Also, it is baby-level storytelling! Wouldn’t you rather be writing something with more emotional depth than a goddamn episode of Mickey Mouse Clubhouse*?
Not to mention that, given your chosen profession, you literally have the capability to show instead of tell. Do you know how much depth of meaning can be conveyed through art?
A LOT! You don’t need a fuckin speech bubble of some jackass going “and that makes me feel angry!” when I am looking at a panel that is clearly conveying “this character is angry!”
Art and words are supposed to flow together in sequential art, it’s not just “words are for plot and art is for flashy splash pages!” JFC.
*—this is not a knock on baby-storytelling or Mickey Mouse Clubhouse. Babies need stories too!
