The Monoma Meta Nobody Asked For

I don’t remember who it was on Reddit that said it makes sense for Monoma to be one of the most empathetic characters in BNHA cuz of his Quirk, (his quirk allows him to walk in the shoes of other people in ways most will never be able to even if for 5 minutes at a time), but let’s talk about it for a minute.

Monoma is a character full of contradictions but there’s a method to the madness. 

Let’s take a real deep look at the manga shall we?

It’s pretty much canon that Monoma trash talks 1-A so much in-part b/c he cares that much... too much... about his own classmates.  It’s implicitly obvious based on the way he interacts with his classmates and phrases his rants at class 1-A. 

The fact that he’s obviously influenced by Vlad is just the cherry on top. 

He’s prideful of not just himself but also his friends.  Let’s break down the nuances there.

Empathy

The kid has a way with words. 

The kid has a weirdly poetic way with words.

He goes out of his way to encourage or reassure his classmates in a deeply thoughtful manner at every given opportunity.

He hyped up Setsuna Tokage before her battle with Bakugo and we saw him grin in pride when Komori took down Tokoyami. 

Whenever Monoma does criticize his classmates, it’s always frank, honest, but constructive, with the intention to help them improve.  He’s even contrasted with his own teacher for being relatively more kind in the delivery of his criticism (see the next screenshot).  Given that Monoma’s shown to be strongly influenced by Vlad, this particular difference stands out.

You never see an anime/manga character get fancifully philosophical & genuinely helpful like this unless they are an adult, usually the MC’s mentor.  Monoma’s legit acting more like an anime mentor than any of Deku’s multiple mentors.  lmfaooo.

Realistically speaking, all of this, the philosophical speeches & level-headed advice, takes an incredible amount of emotional & mental labor.  The kid’s practically doing half of Vlad’s job for him.

It’s during the joint training arc we begin to see why his classmates put up with him and are on friendly terms despite how obnoxious & cheesy he can be & how often they need to keep him in check.

It’s clear even as far back as the sports festival that his classmates don’t actually hate him, despite the smacks & tough love they also just shake their heads with a smile on their face as they say “sorry about him,” cuz that’s just the way he is.  They love him anyways.

He’s an annoying little sh*t but he’s their annoying little sh*t.  Perhaps they even realize why he acts the way he does towards class 1-A, it’s because he cares too much.

Putting Up An Act

I think there’s actually even more to it when it comes to his rowdy & brash behaviors. 

Monoma is empathetic because of how his Quirk works.  He needs to learn to use the Quirks of others in order to become a hero.  In doing so he logically needs to become privy to all the Quirk’s weaknesses, not just their strengths.  Not only does he need to become privy to these often deeply personal details of one’s lived life, he needs to experience them, even if for just five minutes at a time.  It’s natural, even necessary, for Monoma to become exceptionally close to his classmates.

But he’s only like that because of how his Quirk works.  It’s his naturally nurtured self.  His conscious self, though, is notably different.

What we see when Monoma says he and Shinsou need to do unheroic things to get by is not his naturally nurtured self, but is a conscious decision.

At some point in his life, Monoma came to the conclusion that being too kindhearted all the time will be weakness.  This is clearly implied, almost outright stated when we heard Monoma’s thoughts when faced with Deku’s Black Whip, “All of the hopes and dreams in my mind from when I was younger are gradually becoming these heavy burdens... like some sort of curse.”  I am 99.999% sure it’s Monoma’s thoughts being shown there because the speech pattern & context don’t match up to Shinsou or Midoriya at all.

Basically, Monoma is a little sh*t because he saw his own empathy as a weakness, and overcompensates for it.  He’s trained himself to be brash & mischievous, likely from a very young age given how consistently brash he is.  We can see a little bit of this when interacting with his class-B classmates as well.

It was @thyandrawrites​ who first noticed this in this post, but here we see Monoma scolding Kendou after losing the beauty contest, giving perhaps too much tough love & TetsuTetsu steps in to Kendou’s defense.

Given how Monoma during the Joint Training arc clearly said everything he did to motivate his friends to do better, this is likely not an isolated occurrence.  The dude cares way too goddamn much for anyone’s good.

Yet there’s something else up with the guy too, something else that contributes even more to his unhealthy obsession with the rivalry vs class-A.  The dude has some serious self-esteem issues but is too prideful to seek real help.

Self-doubt

The fact that he’s the only member of class-B who failed the midterm despite having an intelligence stat of 5/5 speaks for itself.

Him failing the academic exam would be a sign of serious issues going on under the surface in itself, him failing the practical means he probably failed b/c he couldn’t hold his own and his teammate had to pick up the slack.

Him failing b/c he held back his teammate would have hit very close to home since we now know he was told “You can’t be a hero if you can’t do anything yourself” since he was a kid.

Basically, yet another reason he continues to antagonize class-A is a textbook example of someone pushing their insecurities onto someone or something else.

For something often played off as comedic relief there’s a lot of layers as to why Monoma does what he does.

But wait, there’s f*cking more.  There’s actually a particular reason Monoma expresses his insecurities in this unhealthy manner, and that reason ties into what I’ve already begun to address about his empathy.

Another Act

I don’t think it’s accident that the first time we see him have a real heart-to-heart with someone is when he’s attempting to do it for the sake of someone else.  Even if it is in a clumsy manner that ends up annoying Shinsou, it’s the intent I’m interested in here.

We almost never see Monoma receive or accept praise or reassurance, he’s always the one giving it.  He always makes it a point to put himself in the position where he’s being the emotionally strong one. 

He got over class 1-A securing their victory exceptionally fast, ready to put on a strong face for Tokage and the rest of his class.

The few times we do see him genuinely depressed, he’s distancing himself from others.  

He’s afraid of holding others back not just as a hero, but emotionally as well.  His instinct to be emotionally strong for the people he cares about stems not just from his strong empathy and caring nature nature itself, but also from his pride, insecurities and conscious decision to do everything he can do.

This is why he’s too prideful to seek or accept real emotional help & ends up venting his emotions in unhealthy & destructive ways.

His many depictions as an actor of sorts was intentional.  He juggles many acts, he puts on an act of emotional strength for his classmates, and he puts on an act of cruelty to get by as a hero.  To antagonize people in an attempt to throw them off their game.  Sometimes... oftentimes even, he misapplies these charades & gets carried away.  Oftentimes he fails entirely, he’s trying to do some hella complex things for a kid.

Finally, His Pride

Let’s not kid ourselves here, the dude has a major superiority/inferiority complex.  He fails to see how needlessly cruel he’s being when saying class-A asked to be attacked by villains etc.

I’m willing to bet he’ll be in a phase denial for a while now that Class-B and Class-A have gotten more openly friendly in recent chapters.  But because he cares so much about his classmates he’ll likely eventually come around to adjusting to a new frenemy relationship with 1-A... with much difficulty when we take his pride, insecurities & self-righteous envy into account.

He’ll probably end up being Tsundere about everything to protect his ego and so Horikoshi can keep using him for comedic relief lol.  Even if he does realize a lot of what he’s done was f*ked up, he’s too brash of a prankster to ever go fully soft on them either.

TL;DR... Monoma is a piece of mf work.  Not surprising really.

beatrice sinclair was blessed with the happiest of childhoods. if you ask her about it now, she will recall long, golden days in various european cities, sprawled on the floor of one of her father’s chain of luxury hotels with a book, laughing with staff in a language she didn’t understand in the backrooms, bouncing on pristine hotel beds. she was an easy-going, friendly kid - she loved other people, new places, she loved school (even though she had temporary places at various english-language schools throughout the years, never able to stay anywhere very long).  she’d never really thought too hard about her mother’s job. bee knew she worked for the european government, that she had to be away often - she never dreamed someone as unassuming as emma sinclair could be a SPY. 

on her eleventh birthday, bee’s parents sat her down to explain her mother’s real job, and to offer her a place at spy prep school in london. though they insisted she didn’t have to take the place, bee could see it was what her mother wanted - so she said yes, even if she couldn’t imagine herself ever doing anything like that. 

prep school was difficult - the girls weren’t always kind, the competition was fierce and the classes were difficult. bee had enjoying normal school better, but she would never admit it to her parents, who talked constantly about how proud they were of her. her mother was so excited to enrol bee at gallagher, her alma mater, that bee never had the heart to tell her about the doubts she was having.

at the end of her first year at gallagher, bee was told that she would probably never be good enough to be a field agent. for many, this might have been devastating news, but bee was completely relieved. she was clumsy, her limbs out of control. she’d been struggling to keep up with the physical side of life at gallagher since day one: accidentally injuring herself and others with weapons, crashing her first car, lagging behind in team exercises. she knew she was a liability. research & development was the only class she excelled in - and boy, did she excel. 

bee has a talent for developing believable personas, which prove invaluable for field agents - her research skills are rigorous and she is brilliant at bringing together plausible disguises. she’s thorough in creating impenetrable backstories. she also great in field agent’s ears, a formidable team player, surveying threats from the control room, gathering all the information she can in the moment. most importantly, she has the ability to remain completely calm and collected in moments of crisis, to always see the clearest solution to a problem in a heartbeat. she has great instincts and can often anticipate what people need from her before they even realise it themselves. she is brilliantly observational - with a keen eye to details.

she’s a warm, generous friend, quick to offer a hand. she sees things more than most, pays more attention to others, is more patient than most people deserve. she provides refuge for lots of her classmates, both literally (a place to stay with no questions asked during the breaks) and emotionally (she’s the sort of person who you can just sit in complete silence with, or tell all of your secrets). she struggles a bit with huge crowds of people, being much better one on one.

more unlikely friends! kind of like ‘we go for long drives/long walks together to destress and we talk about all kinds of deep things but no one in college would think we knew each other barely at all’.

childhood friends! before this whole spy business your character’s [realistically probably rich or spy legacy] family were regulars at bee’s dad’s hotel chain or friends of her mother’s and these guys spent fun summers together back in the day! 

TROUBLE CHILD:

Well some are going to knock you / And some'll try to clock you / You know it's really hard / To talk sense to you / Trouble child ... 

someone younger than bee who she has taken under her wing! maybe they are Difficult and she is trying to Kill them with Kindness or maybe they are struggling like she did with the physical side of their majors! 

obviously i am open to absolutely anything so drop me a message! these are just some ideas! like this and i will message you!

if you want: military drama / (realistic?) mecha fights / very plot focused story / most importantly if you liked the previous seasons

And I’m back already with another controversial opinion. I saw the entirety of Full Metal Panic! when I was around 12 and watched anime from CD’s that I borrowed from my classmate. And yet even at that impressionable age where my sisters and I were fawning over and incredibly ecchi and weird anime, I couldn’t care less about FMP. I found it BORING (in capital letters) and from what I remember, this anime was my first introduction to “tragic romance” and tsunderes. Both of which I try to avoid like the plague even now. So here’s IV. 

There are many problems. The OST is not lackluster, it basically doesn’t exist or just plain something that came from “Copyright-Free-Music.com”. This was even more glaring when the anime played the first seasons’ opening theme at the very end which invoked some major nostalgia so there was a huge missed opportunity there. 

Second, the mecha fights are incredibly boring. Like so-so-so sleep inducing. I’m going to say this now; I’m not a big fan of mechs. I don’t care about them. But I’ve seen my fair share of mecha anime and none of them bored me as much as this. 

Next, the lack of interesting characters and lack of interaction. I just didn’t care about anybody. There were like 2 moments where the plot surprised me but that’s it. And when the plot is too boring to carry an anime you fall back on the characters. And if the those are also boring then...?? What’s left?

 Finally, I’d also like to mention the quality. The mechs are 3D rendered so nothing to say about them but the animation wavered from “WOW” to “TF am I even looking at”. It was obvious that most of the money went into the mech fights and the more important physical conflicts. Episode 10 was especially tragic in this department.

Whatever I say here doesn’t matter much however, as this franchise has a cult following similiar to other great oldie anime which I understand completely. If you liked the previous seasons (not the comedy ones), you will most likely like this. If you didn’t, you won’t. As for those who’re new, I wouldn’t recommend jumping in with this one as this is set between 2 previously existing seasons so you won’t understand much. [5/10] (x)

if you want: to philosophise about the big questions of life (not so much in the anime, just makes you think) / nice music / video game adaptation

Caligula is a video game adaptation. I just wanted to get this out of the way cause this is a turn off for a lot of people. Is it good, though? Not really. Ok so first off, Miu is a virtual singer, like Miku from Vocaloid. Her songs are played throughout the anime, during fight scenes and they’re really nice (including the Opening and Ending songs). The OST has some nice tracks but it could’ve used some variety.

Miu’s voice actor was incredible. Ritsu’s (protagonist) was good as well however the others were QUITE awkward during emotional scenes. 

The colour palette was questionable. The whole world is white and dull and only the fight scenes bring in more colour. I suspect this was done on purpose and while I understand the point of it, that doesn’t better that I had to stare at like 3 colours moving for 24 minutes at times. The character designs were also very meh, I liked a few of them but it was like the creator ran out of design ideas halfway through making them and said “You know what! why don’t we have TWO blonde characters who wear their coats on their back without giving either of them much of a personality! That’ll surely not confuse anyone!”

Oh and that’s where the characters come in. The game has 9 main characters. The average playtime of the game is 26 hours. This anime was 4.5 hours long. I THINK you can all see the problem here. There are maybe 4 characters we get to know a bit but for the others?? I literally didn’t even notice there was one more character in the “squad” for like a whole episode! And this is what lead to possibly the worst offense of this anime. They literally had the characters tell their tragic backstories. As in, there was one episode where they sat in a room and everyone just talked about themselves. Umm??

The setting and the ideas presented were quite intriguing however. Intriguing enough for me to check up on the game which is going to be released on PC next year. I’ll probably check it out, not gonna lie but purely because the anime left me unsatisfied with its lackluster execution. [5/10] (x)

There are no high stakes, the outcome is predictable 99% of the time and while that may sound boring, that IS what some people look for. Yes, Aikatsu is a great “come home from a hard day at work and just watch something nice and sweet before going to bed” anime. 

You’ll also be delighted to hear that the music is excellent. While the performances being CGI is a little weird at first, you get used to it. And because they don’t have to hand-draw each performance (jesus) the animation quality very, VERY rarely wavers which is kinda incredible when you consider that there are 178 episodes.

Lastly, I just want to mention the characters. They are driving force of Aikatsu (besides the music and performances) and every one of them is likable. At least to me, but I have a soft spot for cute girls and have a hard time hating any so my experience may be a bit biased. Anyway, only drawback is that the main cast of characters switches around and that if you fall in love with a secondary-character you are pretty much doomed to see them for like 3 minutes in total after their arc ends. Compass Calling (pirate au/prince!jy/pirate!jb/very well-written smut (get ready to squeeze yo ass cheeks)/angst/violence etc...) this fic is e v e r y t h i n g for me… The sexual tension between jinyoung and jaebum is so pleasurable that i cant even. you sink into the atmosphere so easily, the writer is really gifted about portraiting the scenes. it also has a very deep and sad side markson, so get your kokoro ready for this… i can talk about this fic like 9 hours but it’s not necessary bc READ IT OKAY

Better Late Than Never (college au/rich boyz/rivals/fights and angst) ENEMIES TO LOVERS IS MY KINK OKAY i will fite you. ehm let’s get back to the fic, it’s quite dynamic, i mean every second sth happens, so you don’t get bored or lose your concentration. jealous!jaebum stans will love it ( ¬‿¬) 

It has a sequel too and it’s pure angst believe me —> Pace is the Trick

 On the Road to Happiness (coffee shop au/amnesia/fluff/smut/angst/dont be surprised if you see some markjin/ plus side yugbam) Another beautiful fic… Mark is jinyoungie’s first love for a thousand years,platonically ofc, however he’s getting married with another woman and jinyoungie is his best man. and after background information takes place, shit got really real… However the real charm point of the fic is CHIC AND SEXY AND POSSESSIVE AND JEALOUS AND JY’S PEACH STAN JB. i assure that you’ll also see lots of the chin thing dsdkdkf 

I’ll End Up Like Icarus (college au/fluff/romantic comedy)  You should read it, i dont know what else to say. This fic has the most iconic lines i swear you’ll understand what i mean after you read and i like coffee; coffee is the key for everything.

Do What We Do (one shot/smut/cross dressing) get ready to quality smut to the accompaniment of jinyoung wearing a red miniskirt and lowkey but strong jjp feels, that’s all i say.

Breathless (college au/coffee shops/fluff/romantic comedy/mark and jackson are dicks) CUTEST FIC I’VE EVER READ i want to write this fic’s url on my forehead so everyone can reach this beautiful fic and we can make the world a better place i’m serious. Savage, devilish but still cute as hell jinyoung and confused-one-night-stand-boi jaebum strike again!! ((In this point i want to note that the characterization is very important for me in fanfics. I can’t read neither passive and soft jinyoung, or serious and henpecked jb fics. Glass Fingertips (soulmates/marks/high school au/fluff/angst/some illnesses/dont worry noone’s gonna die) jinyoungie who has just moved in seoul is from jeju island, the place he misses the most and jaebum is his classmate, a froward boy who usually gets into fights and is not liked by much people in their school. Jinyoung has a mark on his forearm which means he has a soulmate somewhere he doesn’t know yet. He’s afraid of the power of the fate and he doesn’t want to believe that a ridiculous mark suddenly has appeared on his arm can erase all his rights to control and direct his life. 

In other words; tough guy jaebum gets soft only for our dazed and confused jinyoung.

Work Sucks (smut/comedy/non au/jjp are officially boyfriends/jb’s about to explode lol) Basicially JB and Jinyoung haven’t have sex for weeks bc of their busy schedule, finally they have a day off but fuck their luck, they’re cockblocked by the world non-stop.

Stupid Lies: Let It All Burn Down (unrequited love/childhood friends/HEAVY ANGST/love triangles) I guess you should first read the previous parts of the Bleeding Love Saga series, but this part is my favorite so i only added this one. Even though it’s not finished yet, i have high expectations about this fic. Jaebum is a softie blindly in love and Jinyoung is an asshole that i don’t understand what he’s trying to do yet, i swore him about 6 minutes per chapter i admit it. *plays kokobop* It goes down down baby~

The Tiger & The Duke (sugar daddy jb/smut/angst/jealous!jb) Fav one of my faves… I personally am not a fan of sugar daddy fics, because everything happens so fast usually; i mean the daddy is the owner of everything, one day he sees our regular boy and falls in love with him immediately, is ready to give him the world etc… But in this fic everything develops slowly for both of them. I love this. And ofc it has savage and unattached jy and jealous, short-tempered and possesive jaebum; seriously what did you expect??

Bed Sheets (prostitute!jy/sugar daddy!jb/angst/smut) rich boy JB wanted our prostitute jy to be his fake boyfriend for one week and things started to get complicated. The characters and the plot are actually similar to The Tiger and The Duke actually but i love it whatsoever.

A Certain Romance (single dad!jb/baby yugyeom/escort!jy/fluff/smut/awkward situations) I’ll just copy paste the summary because that’s it: By day, he’s a top-rated babysitter. By weekends he’s an x-rated escort. These things are generally kept separate, until the day his weekend regular gets his phone number by recommendation and calls for an emergency babysitter. The problem is that Jaebum doesn’t know that Junior the escort is also Jinyoung the babysitter.In which Jaebum and Jinyoung know each other in the biblical sense but maybe want to get to know each other, too.

Also baby yugyeom is too precious for this world.

Walls of Glass (ABO dynamics/tattoos/omega!jb/alpha!jy/enemies to you’ll see/smut) This one is probably my favorite A/B/O universe fic. Jaebum’s family which is the number one enemy of jinyoung’s family (which is a new-house), is an old-house one and has been pure blood alpha for hundreds of years and everyone was sure jaebum is an alpha too, until suddenly the omega tattoo appeared on his neck in the middle of his alpha class. (I’m a simple person; if there’s tsundere jinyoung, sign me in)

The Buckwheat Flower (historical/war/one shot) It’s sad. It’s really sad. It leaves you purposeless. If you’re already sad don’t read it because tears won’t stop. I don’t think I’ll ever forget that very scene.

Hypersystem (sci-fi/unrequitted love) Another fic that broke my heart so bad. You’ll enjoy it if you’re interested in math and stuff tho. Jaebum is in love with Jinyoung for years, but Jinyoung is with Mark. Any other detail i give would be spoiler so i’ll shut up.

Falsettos, Stains, and Drama (high school au/drama club/fluffromeo!jb/juliet!jy/aaaand some jealous!bambam lol /everyone is so cute and shy omg) I’ll end this rec post with a fluffy one. Where the year’s play is Romeo and Juliet and everyone becomes wholly absorbed in their role.

🎀 - Are you named after someone? No, I'm actually named after something - the name of a brand of a specific type of product, but my mother changed the last letter.

🎀 - When was the last time you cried? Last night after watching one of my favourite Kataang AMVs, this one right here. The song, the lyrics and the scenes used in that video all blend together so well and it makes me really emotional.

🎀 - Do you like your handwriting? Yes, very much! I've always liked cursive because I think it's pretty. My handwriting has pretty much stayed the same since basic school. When taking quick notes on some random piece of paper or solving crosswords, I usually use block/capital letters and not cursive. I have many nice examples of my handwriting posted along with some sketches in the 'my sketch' tag (such as: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7).

🎀 - What is your favourite lunch meat? Umm, I don't think I have a favourite. When it comes to making sandwiches or cold dishes, then perhaps turkey or just regular ham/sausage?

🎀 - Do you have kids? No, but I've given it some thought already and I believe that I'd love to have at least one child in the future.

🎀 - If you were a different person, would you be friends with you? Probably not, since right now I consider myself to be very kind, humble, intelligent and rather confident with who I am (which has taken me a long time to accept). If I were different (mean, cocky and not worked hard to study as much as I could during school and university to become a well-educated person), I might not like me as much.

🎀 - Do you use sarcasm? Quite often every day, ever since I learned what it is and how to use it properly.

🎀 - Do you still have your tonsils? Nope! I had those removed when I was a very little girl, about 7+ years old. Whenever I became sick, I used to take a long time to recover from even the simplest colds and that happened pretty often during my childhood. The doctors thought it'd be better for me to have them removed. My voice changed a bit after the surgery and everybody (my parents and, later when I returned to school, my classmates) kept saying that I sounded different, but I never really noticed it (or was too young to understand the difference), so it was really funny to me.

🎀 - Would you bungee jump? I haven't so far and I don't think I will in the near future. I'd have to be reassured several times that everything is secure and there'd have to be some soft thing to land on down below in case anything happens.

🎀 - What's your favorite cereal? I've eaten so many throughout the years and they're all so good! I've been eating lots of Froot Loops and Lotte cereal lately (Lotte is an Estonian dog cartoon character), which tastes exactly the same as Chocapic, but I also love Nesquik, Coco Pops, Frosties, Cookie Crisp, Cini Minis and Cheerios. Did I miss any of my childhood favourites which are still sold in our shops?

🎀 - Do you untie your shoes when you take them off? Every time.

🎀 - Do you think you're a strong person? Physically, strong enough to defend myself but not like I visit a gym daily. Mentally, stronger than I might seem because I've endured bullying throughout basic school and learned how to defend myself against such people.

🎀 - What's your favorite ice cream? Right now I'd have to say it's vanilla Jättis by Ingman, which is a Finnish ice cream company. *sends greetings to awesome neighbours*

🎀 - What's the first thing you notice about someone? Probably their face and, shortly after, their general appearance.

🎀 - What's your least favorite physical thing about yourself? I strive to be thinner (for a good reason, since I'm overweight). During the last 5 years I've managed to lose 55 pounds and I've never been as thin as I am right now in a long time (my mother said I was this thin back in 6th grade). I'm proud of that. I feel lighter and am confident that I'm healthier, too.

🎀 - What color trousers and shoes are you wearing right now? I'm not wearing any shoes since I'm indoors, but I'm wearing black jogging pants that have white stripes going down the sides.

🎀 - What are you listening to right now? Nothing, but I remember one of the last songs I listened to on YouTube was "Good Grief" by Bastille.

🎀 - If you were a crayon, what color would you be? Maybe pink? Because I'm optimistic, friendly, feel great love for all my friends and family. Or perhaps blue? Because I'm also realistic, intelligent, introverted.

🎀 - Favorite smell? Fresh air, freshly cut grass, the Mayday trees and common lilacs near my home.. some smells I like when it comes to nature. Our apartment (every apartment has a unique smell, believe me), nice soaps, washed laundry/clothes, when my mother is cooking something tasty. The smell of new books (my Estonian/literature teacher from secondary school told our class how she likes smelling new books and her habit sort of grew on me when I started ordering the Avatar comic trilogies, those Dark Horse books have a unique smell that I like).

🎀 - Who was the last person you talked to on the phone? My mother.

🎀 - Favorite sport to watch? Formula 1, followed by football, athletics, skiing and everything else (especially those fields where Estonians are participating).

🎀 - Do you wear contacts? Luckily no, no glasses either.

🎀 - Favorite food? I try to vary my menu, so I can't choose anything specific. Have you heard of kama, Estonia's national food? It's so yummy, I love making it sweeter by adding more sugar to the kefir (which gives it a sour taste). You should definitely try a spoonful when you have the opportunity.

🎀 - Scary movies or comedy? I prefer comedies over scary movies, but I wouldn't mind watching a good scary movie sometimes.

🎀 - Last movie you watched? "Planes" on channel 3 last Saturday (which I enjoyed, but "Cars" is definitely closer to my heart).

🎀 - Summer or Winter? Why must you make me choose between two of my favourite seasons!? Nah, I love all of the seasons to be honest. Summer, because it's warm, you can wear lighter clothing, I enjoy eating strawberries, my birthday is near the end of July, Estonians celebrate Victory Day and St. John's Day in June as well as the day we restored our independence in August.

🎀 - Book you're currently reading? None, because I prefer reading (and writing) fanfiction nowadays. The last one I read though was "North and South: Part Three", the third part of the last Avatar trilogy. 🎀 - Who do you miss right now? My old classmates from secondary school and my coursemates from university. Our school is organizing a reunion in October, so I'll get to see my fellow alumni of our class then.

Hello everyone! As a 2nd year B.A. student majoring in literature, I thought I would give some tips to other people about essay writing in a literary context, especially for stuff other than the outlines, as a lot of studyblrs already give very good tips about outlines. I am available to answer any question you may have about this guide, so please don’t hesitate! This guide will be a step-by-step walkthrough on how to prepare and write literary essays. Find the second part about actually writing your essay here.

1. master your subject

Before you even look into your essay question(s), you need to make sure that you have a good overall understanding of the work you are about to analyze. The first step is, of course, to make sure that you have read the piece in question. But there’s more! Here are a couple of guiding questions to insure that you have a good understanding of the piece:

What are the main themes and subjects of this piece? How do they relate to each other?

Who is/are the main character(s)? What motivates them, what are their goals? What makes them relatable (if they are)? How realistic and/or complex are they? How does their complexity/realism reflect their symbolic purpose in the work, if they have one? Are they one-dimensional allegorical figures or more like actual people? What does this suggest about the world represented in the book?

What are the characters’ relationships with each other? Who are the friends and who are the foes of the main character(s)? Are those friendly or hostile feelings mutual or one-sided? What does it say about the characters?

If the piece follows a standard narrative structure, what is the narrative scheme? What are the issues of this piece and how are they resolved? If the narrative structure is atypical, what is the common thread that brings the piece together?

Who is the author? When and where did they live when they wrote this? What events or facts about their context might have motivated them to write this piece? (These elements are useful to build opening sentences, for example.)

Does the piece express a specific message about the real world, a greater meaning, perhaps relating to a specific phenomenon the author was observing in the real world? (Note: This can be hard to decipher, especially in more contemporary pieces that follow a less traditional narrative structure and may not even have any identifiable message about reality. Reading online reviews of the piece and searching for quotes which were identified as important by other readers may help, as would asking about it to your classmates or teacher.)

You don’t have to answer all of these questions, especially considering that some of these may simply not apply to the specific work you are reading or may be too complex to answer by yourself. They are thinking tracks to help you deepen your understanding of what you are reading, not a checklist of questions to ask yourself before you get to your essay, so don’t sweat it if you can’t answer some of those questions.

2. understand your essay question / building your own essay question

a. understanding your essay question

Your goal here is to make sure you clearly understand what is asked of you. Here are a few steps to follow:

Identify what is asked of you. This will be either a standard question word like what, how or why or a direction verb at the imperative form telling you what to do. Here is a good breakdown of the most common action verbs used in essay questions. When in doubt, ask the teacher for clarification — they are the one who wrote the question, so they probably have a good idea of what kind of answer they expect.

Look at the terms used in the question. Is there any of those terms which has a hazy meaning to you or you don’t know at all what it means? Grab a dictionary and look it up. If it still feels imprecise, ask the teacher for more information.

Break the question down into parts. What are the literary devices mentioned in the question (characters, themes, narrative elements, stylistic quirks, etc.)? Can you spot them in the piece? If yes, mark pages with post-it tabs, so you can go back and analyze them later. Make sure you have all the necessary knowledge to interpret these devices by looking up literary theory on them if it’s not fresh in your memory. Mark down all the references you consult and note key points so you can come back to it later if needed.

Make a brainstorm of possible answers. This is not a mandatory step, but it can help guide you into choosing quotes to build your outline.

b. building your own essay question

This usually happens from time to time in college or university. It can feel a bit overwhelming to do this when you are not used to it. Most teachers will ask of you to have your essay question and/or outline approved before you move on to write your essay, or will gladly validate them for you, so don’t worry if you are not 100% sure of your direction. Here are some ideas to help you pick a subject to form a question about:

Is there something in the work which you did not understand the meaning of? Whether it is a style in the writing, a character’s motivations, a plot point or anything else, it may be a good base to work from. You don’t always have to work from something you know, your essay can be a great way to deepen your own knowledge of a piece.

Was there something that you found particularly moving in the book? If so, you could work on explaining through literary devices what makes this thing especially moving, objectively speaking.

Do you know of any other piece which explores the same themes as this one? If yes, you may be able to make a parallel between both works by comparing and contrasting how the authors chose to explore the same theme/subject (note: this is especially interesting to do with historical fiction and non-fiction or with authors of different times).

If nothing comes up, brainstorms are a good way to bring possible subjects on the table. Write everything you know about the work’s meaning, follow your intuition until you come up with a hypothesis that you are not 100% sure about but have a feeling could be true. You can try formulating a question after you have a hypothesis and ask the teacher for validation of both your thesis and your essay question.

Whatever you write down, don’t forget that your question needs to bring better insight into the meaning of the piece you are studying and it must force you to study literary devices, not just summarize elements of the book. Your proofs will be textual excerpts with figures of speech and choice of words which influence the signification of the text, and your question needs to reflect that.

3. pick up quotes that answer your question

Some teachers advise you to form your thesis statement and arguments before you pick up your quotes. Most other teachers have advised me to build arguments and my thesis statement from quotes. This process insures that you will not try to twist the quote to say what you want it to say, but you will interpret it as is and then draw conclusions from it — which is the logical procedure we use to build essays anyways, we observe the work, and then draw conclusions from it, right?

Right. So, take a piece of paper or open a word document and start picking out quotes which relate to your essay question, dividing them into categories of what you can interpret or see in them. If you use a sheet of paper, divide it in the number of paragraphs you have to write (if you are writing a multi-level essay, divide by the number of subtopics; if there are more than 6 subtopics, you may divide more broadly into topics). Make sure you pick up at least two quotes for each category, or twice the amount of subtopics if you are dividing into topics. You don’t want to have to anxiously shuffle through your book trying to find a plan B quote (if you realize your quote is not ideal in the end) and losing precious time if you are writing last minute. Finding two quotes which have roughly the same meaning is also a way to reduce the chances of misinterpretation.

Tip: Instead of rewriting the whole quotes, which can be time-consuming, you can write only the first few and last words and use colour-coded tabs in your book to help you find them back easily.

Don’t forget to mark down the page numbers! There’s nothing worse than finding a good quote but not being able to use it because you can’t find back where it was.

4. prepare your outline

Outlines are super important. This gives a general direction and conducting line to your essay. It also helps you make sure you don’t leave out any important points.

Now, for the specific structure of your outline and essay, I can’t give you many tips, because outline requirements vary depending on the teacher, schooling system, geographical region, language, etc. My way of building outlines won’t necessarily be the way your teacher wants you to use. However, I would make sure that your outline contains these specific elements:

Opening sentence(s): Depending on your structure, you may want to outline the basic subjects of each sentence that will be part of your introduction. Just a few keywords will be enough for a lot of people.

Thesis statement: This is a universal one. Make sure your thesis statement does not only describe events in the book, but describes a literary device or a reoccurring element and assigns it a signification.

Topic (and subtopic) sentences: Do not just jot down a few keywords, form complete sentences following the same model as your thesis statement. Remember that each of your subtopic sentences needs to prove your topic sentences, which need to prove your thesis statement.

Quotes: Include the pages of the quotes you have picked up in advance so you’re not stuck hunting back for them.

Explanation of quotes: Briefly summarize what the quote means in regards with your topic or subtopic sentence.

Conclusion: It may help to at least choose a subject for your closing sentences, so you’re not stuck when the time comes.

CLOTHING VULNERABILITY 

I really wanted to choose a theme around pressures as I feel it’s something so relevant in today’s society and I knew I had faced some of the issues myself so it is something I feel really passionately about, within the 10 weeks I have been doing this project I’ve learned a lot about your own self-image and how people only wear what they wear/ do what they do because it makes them happy and it’s what they’re confident doing, but at the same time I was also a little surprised as the issues I had brought up weren’t necessarily as much of a taboo subject if you will, I think a lot of ‘problems’ in society based around dress is more problems people create from themselves rather than other people telling them how they should or shouldn’t be. Throughout this project my classmates way of working and their work itself has inspired me a lot, I always find it really interesting to looking through their sketchbooks and gain inspiration for new ways I can lay out my work or show experimentation, I think this is really important as it fuels my enthusiasm and excitement and it makes me strive to create work everyone else can look at and feel inspired by and actually use within their own project.  

I feel my most significant aspect of my work was using screen printing, I feel this was when my project really came to life and I was able to see a final piece when thinking about what I was going to do within my remaining time. Although every project has problems I was lucky in the sense nothing extreme happened to me in my time, My biggest issue was at the very start of my project when I felt I was really unsure on what the theme I had come up with actually meant, I struggled to refine such a large topic into sub categories and I feel it took me a little longer than it should have done to get started. My own outlook on my work really influenced my ability to solve problems as throughout this 10 week project I’ve really seen my work develop and improve and during the project I was really happy with the work I was creating, this positive outlook really boosted my confidence and made me enjoy what I was creating and even if there was small problems within my development I didn’t let it affect me too much and I remained calm and managed to successfully deal with my issues. 

I  found a lot of my research that shaped my ideas from Pinterest, I really like  this website as it’s really user friendly and you can find so many artists  and designers so easily. I also got a lot just by talking to people and  finding out how they felt about my topic and their opinions on the things I was  suggesting, I really like this as I means I have a lot of first-hand  knowledge and it isn’t sugar coated because no one was being biased with the  things I was asking them. I also used a lot of my own personal opinions, I’m  glad I have done this as it means it’s raw opinions and since my theme was  based around issues I had already faced I was able to use quotes I had heard  being said to me rather than just finding one online that wasn’t personal and  didn’t necessarily mean that much to me.

On reflection I really didn’t use my time as effectively as I should, as previously mentioned I spent a long time at the start of the project finding my feet and trying to work out exactly what I was wanting to do, this did knock me back quite a bit, in week 3 I completely started my sketchbook again, which although seems ridiculous to do as It seems like such a massive waste of time I’m really glad I did it, at such an early stage I really disliked even looking at my sketchbook as I knew it wasn’t as strong as it could have been so by taking the time to start again I’ve now got work I’m really proud of and I actually like. I sometimes struggle to work at home as I feel I’m easily distracted and not committed enough to work, time management at home is often an issue for me because I have a job which is all weekend every week so I find it difficult to dedicate hours to do work, saying this I am very happy with my efficiency within the studio, I feel I worked well and remained focused throughout the project. I feel I was over-ambitious when it came to how many garments I was going to create, I wanted to make 4 and have my last one be a makeup bag but I realistically did not have the time to create this, although this annoys me I don’t feel it put my collection at a disadvantage.

I have developed the ability to create an exposed screen and have my knowledge and ability to use the screen grow. At the start of the project I knew a little about this but not nearly as much as I do now, I have watched my skills increase a lot throughout the 10 weeks and I think this was vital for my project as all my garments have got screen printing on them and I feel it actually looks really successful and refined rather than doing it and having it look okay and no more, I’m also really glad I have developed this skill as printing is something I’m going to do in my future courses and hopefully what I do as a career. Towards the end of the project I was introduced to bondaweb, I really like this technique as it is quick and easy and looks really effective on my garment, it was something I was a little nervous of before trying it because it was so new to me and I had no idea how it worked but I picked up the skill quickly and I’m really happy with the skills I have developed working with this material. I think my crafting sensibilities are to a professional standard yes, I have put a lot of work into my development stage and I spent weeks refining what I was doing, I didn’t just use the first thing I had experimented with, this I feel is what has made my project such a success. 

Throughout  the project I done weekly evaluations and tried to constantly evaluate my  work as I was going along both on my blog and in my sketchbook, also I used annotations  throughout as I was doing the work, this I feel is really important as I wasn’t  writing it in hindsight and what I was saying is actually what happened  rather than a version that wasn’t necessarily accurate due to my memory being  different to what actually happened. I wish I had written down more peer  feedback as I feel it could have led to more detail within my evaluations. I  had aimed to create 4 garments using screen-printing and embroidery, I feel  like because I knew these were the techniques I was using I was able to  successfully evaluate if I was on track with where I should be in terms of  time management, this has really helped me to prepare for developing in the  textile world, in future courses I will have to do this constantly and now I have  experience with it and I know I can do it to a high ability.

I knew I  wanted to hang my work on one of the wooden boards rather than a wall, I also  knew I wanted to be on the walkway rather than in the studios, this is  because the walkways much brighter and because it’s mainly textiles work  displayed there I feel it flows a lot better than it would if I would have  been placed in the studio. I spent a couple of weeks considering how I wanted  to hang my garments and with a lot of consideration I decided I wanted to  hang my work on coat hangers rather than a mannequin, this is because I feel  sometimes the mannequin takes too much attention from your work and coat  hangers are so subtle. I heard about the new boards having a wooden looking  effect to them and this initially really excited me as I feel it reminded me  of the high street store Urban Outfitters, with the abstract look to my  garments I feel the wood also really complimented this. I found copper coat  hangers with I really liked too, they I feel added to the femininity I was  trying to show within the piece, they looked subtle against the board and I feel  the colour I chose really goes with the garments I had created. I feel the  way I hung my work is appropriate to professional practice as this is how it  would look in a high fashion environment and it’s how someone would view your  garment in a shop. With just my garments hanging up I feel I didn’t necessarily  communicate my ideas that well, I felt it wasn’t easy to be able to tell what  they were about, with this in mind I made clothing tags which I really like, I  feel they really effectively show my ideas and again add to the fashion  element as garments are displayed in stores with tags on. Overall I am very  happy with how my work looks in my exhibition space, it’s not overly bust  which I like as I was a little worried my background could distract from my  clothing but I feel I have successfully managed to convey my message without  this happening.

This letter is addressed to you, probably the second letter I want you to read. If you asked me about other stuff I’ve written for you that I kept for myself, I think I lost count.

The last time I wrote real stuff for you, it was one and a half year ago. And we’ve evolved since then, so reading that message now would feel a bit outdated, don’t you think?

Feelings change too, don’t they?

So here goes my “A Message (from Me, to You) v2.0″

Hmmmm…

Okay.

I don’t exactly know where to start, moreover what to explain, so… try to digest these jumbled words I’ve written, will you? :-)

The first time I heard your name, you were well known as somebody’s twin. Rumors had it, you were the complete opposite of your twin sister. She was rather famous, actively participating on school events, also a girl every guy would have crush on. You? I didn’t hear much. All I knew was you were a kinda weird-awkward-ridiculous guy who often made people laugh.

But I never actually gave a damn, since we were never involved in one circle, and we didn’t really have mutual friends.

Funnily, we had to sit in the same class from second year until we finished high school. And guess what? I still didn’t give a damn about what was going on between me and my classmates. I was always skipping class, with the other friends from the so-called Student Councils, doing whatever we had to do (mostly nothing, though).

Being in the same class with you, I got to know you slightly better than merely hearing what people said about you. Here are the things I knew about you before we got close:

You were always studying (in the class, outside the class, anywhere);

which made you good at all (or most) subjects.

You were also a great soccer player.

You had a really neat handwriting.

You always did your homework - which I often copied (not all the time, though).

You were a goody two shoes; you were an introvert (at least that’s what I thought, since you never talked to many people); and you were always nice to everyone.

(The list probably goes on and on if I didn’t stop myself there).

And from there, I learnt that there was no chance for us to be good close friends. If somebody asked, I was everything you weren’t (except I was also a great soccer player).

At some point, we got pretty close and possibly only God knows how. The more I got to know you personally, the better of a person I realized you were. From that on, I had been telling myself not to catch feelings for you, or else I’d be in for some big trouble. (because it was more likely for my feelings to be unrequited). (been there, done felt that bruh).

And I was stupid enough to ignore the fact that you were out of my league, I fell instead. (I know you hate this kind of corny stuff so excuse me).

Once I started to catch myself falling, I did something anybody else would do.

I pushed you away.

It was the right thing to do, I supposed.

A friend of mine once said, “If you meet a really friendly guy, let him go. He’ll come back in a good time, good way.”

And thank goodness, you came back. Oh did you come back.

To be completely honest, I never knew how you feel until that time you told me. As long as I can remember, I never said I liked you too. But man, was it a relief to finally know the unknown.

In case you haven’t realized, I like you, a lot. Heck, I love you, even.

I never told you something like this, mainly because it might freak you out. I hope you don’t and won’t ever get scared (of me).

Currently, times are tough. We live in different cities of different countries. Although I’ve always hated the long-distance kind of thing, I love how we always try to make it work. I love how naive we always are.

In case you didn’t know, I was always a realistic person, possibly too realistic that I got it mixed with pessimistic. I always thought nothing lasts forever. I always thought those high-school stories are more likely to be something ephemeral, like a summer fling.

You taught me something. Many things. You taught me how to give something a chance, how to give us a chance, to last as long as it could. You taught me to have faith in whatever-we-have-right-now.

I never wanted us to end. Even if I did, maybe it was for good reason. But to tell you the truth, I want us to last forever.

If we happened to be something temporary, even if you met someone who’s better (in all aspects) than me, or if I did (whichever occurs first), please don’t hold back. Go after something you think you deserve.

If the inevitable were to happen and we drifted apart, I want you to know that never have I had any regrets of knowing you. I also probably won’t ever forget you, either.
