Good Omens Fic Rec: Big Name Feelings
FANDOM AU! • Crowley is a BNF fic writer, and Aziraphale is a lurking artist who might be just a little parasocially in love with him. How they ever became friends is beyond him, but here they are: One month out from Prophet Con, and Crowley is asking him to be his boyfriend. Just for the weekend, of course.
Length: 103,997 words
AO3 Rating: Explicit / Spice Level 🔥🔥🔥
Best for: Safe in Public, Human AU, Slow Burn, Fake Relationship, Pick-me-up
Triggers: None
Read it here, fic by ghostrat
*Minor Spoilers* It's here! The finale of one of the most entertaining and immersive fanworks that I have ever experienced is finally upon us! I feel like most of you who follow me here are aware of this fanfic or have read it. However, for those who haven't or might come across this post later: I'm begging you to read this one. Buckle up; it's a long post today.
So, if you're not aware, this fanfic involves writer Crowley and fan artist Aziraphale. Crowley, being ace, seeks a boyfriend to shield him from unwanted attention during an upcoming convention. Aziraphale, smitten, agrees to be the fake boyfriend. This Arrangement is sure to work out exactly as planned!
Every one of the author's stories feels cinematic to me. The worlds are always so real and immersive, but this one, in particular, will have you feeling like you're actually watching the story unfold in real life. Some of that is achieved through embedded media like chats, artwork, and Tumblr posts, bringing a sense of reality to these conversations. The rest comes from really rich prose. You'll flow through it very easily, yet deeply.
The use of fandom and a convention as the backdrop for this fic was, to be honest, genius. I've seen attempts before, but none captured the spirit quite like this one. The fandom lore for The Nice and Accurate Prophecy (the in-universe fandom they're in) was rich enough for us to fully grasp the shape and feel of why they loved it so much, yet it never impedes the ongoing story. This story perfectly captured what it's like to be a fan: how friendships develop, how ideas and fan theories are freely discussed, the passion for a shared topic. The con, in particular, will fill anyone who has ever attended a fan convention with a strong dose of nostalgia and love. Oh, and having them in their 50s? Thank you! There is no age limit to fandom!
Having Aziraphale as the artist and Crowley the writer was not the most obvious choice, but it's one that worked amazingly well for the story! Crowley struggles with words and expressing his feelings in real life. However, in stories, he can build his own world and express whatever emotions are on his mind. Aziraphale, who does not wish to draw attention to himself in real life, expresses himself through his bold and beautiful artwork. His specialization in traditional, physical artwork is so fitting for him, though he's not unwilling to try new tech. There is a scene where they stumble upon some street art that Aziraphale had done. I teared up at that scene, and it's not even angsty! Just the casualness of it, how it's not Aziraphale but Crowley who boldly leads them to it, how Aziraphale doesn't sing his own praises. He's not self-deprecating, but he doesn't celebrate his work. He's still learning that he has value that's worth celebrating. At least now he has Crowley to teach him to be proud of himself.
They are both beautifully written characters. It's a real testament to the skill of the author to bring these characters into such a different reality and have them be unmistakably Aziraphale and Crowley. Sure, they're updated for the time and setting, but their souls are still the angel and demon we know and love. This setting is an amazing way to explore the different sides of their personalities. Crowley's asexuality, in particular, was one of the best depictions I've ever read. It brought a new level of understanding to me, and I'm sure many of you will feel a kinship with him. Really pay attention to what's being said here, there's some really deep and insightful passages that are worth analyzing. Like this moment, which may have been a subconscious thought, but again speaks to how deeply the author understands the characters.
This was such an amazing experience as a fan. I've never had a fic feel like this much of an event before. Every chapter drop was so exciting; I never knew what exactly to expect. And now, with the end being over 100k words?? Where did that word count come from! That's insane! I'm sad to leave this iteration, but I'm so excited for what's to come next. So please, if you haven't read this, give it a try. It's such a impressive work, so much time and effort was put into this and you can tell. It's not only a love letter to Good Omens, but one to fandom and fanspaces as well. Thank you, thank you, thank you for this journey
There are some explicit scenes towards the end, but they are all marked and skippable, so I'd say you're perfectly fine reading this in public.
Edit from after actually seeing the finale: no I’m not tearing up it’s just really dusty in this room. I’m being so normal rn 🥹🥹🥹

Hello, everyone!
In light of Neil Gaiman's comment that Amazon is close to officially renewing Good Omens but hasn't done so yet, I think those of us who can should start sending physical postcards to Amazon Studios!
The TL;DR of this post is that you can easily send a postcard from MyPostcard.com for about $3 (USD, I'm sure other currencies can vary). The Web site will print and mail it for you, so you don't have to do any printing or mailing yourself. The postage is included in the $3.
If you don't already have an image or card you want to use, you can just use one of mine above. Some of them are small because of small source images, but the site seems to resize them appropriately for the card. There are bigger versions in a Google Drive folder that you shouldn't have to be logged in to see.
You can send the postcards asking for a third season of Good Omens addressed to Jennifer Salke and Vernon Sanders, co-heads of Amazon Studios, at:
AMAZON STUDIOS 1620 26TH STREET, SUITE 4000N SANTA MONICA, CA 90404 USA
@fuckyeahgoodomens was the first to post this contact information for Amazon, so thank you, Ixi.
If it's something you don't mind, I would very deeply appreciate reblogs on this, since it works better if lots of people see it! No pressure if you don't want to, though.
And if you have Questions, click through below for my reasoning on all this.
Why should we send postcards to Amazon Studios?
We've made lots of noise online about renewal, and we've done a lot of streaming Good Omens. But I haven't seen much discussion of sending physical mail or, specifically, postcards.
Mail takes up space in the real world. It's slightly harder to ignore than email. It's way more attention-grabbing than posts on X or Tumblr or any other social media site. Because postage is required, physical mail can also appear more "committed."
Postcards specifically are great because of their convenience for the recipient. No one has to open them to read them. All it takes is a quick glance to see what we're asking for, and realistically, a quick glance is the best we can ask for in a corporate office. That's why I'm emphasizing postcards over regular letters (although really, anything helps).
Is sending postcards really going to motivate Amazon to make more Good Omens?
Postcard and letter-writing campaigns have helped get shows renewed in the past. Star Trek: The Original Series is a good example of a series that got another season after a letter-writing campaign. This article has more examples.
We don't actually know what's going on in Good Omens's case. Maybe postcards would make a difference; maybe they wouldn't. We can only make our most determined effort at making sure we're heard, and sending mail is part of that.
The cost of sending a postcard is too much for me.
I understand that sending a postcard will not be an option for many of us. This post isn't intended to try to push you into spending money you don't have. If you still want to find a way to participate, you can also send an email to [email protected] with your comments about wanting Good Omens 3. It's not physical mail, but it is still a personal message from a customer.
In fact, people who are sending postcards might want to follow up with an email, too.
Do we have to use your postcard designs?
No! Not necessarily! You can use anything.
As long as the message you write includes how much you want Good Omens 3, your postcard's image doesn't necessarily have to relate. You could send a souvenir postcard that says "Greetings from Los Angeles, CA / Tadfield, England / etc" from your local post office and just write your message on the back.
Technically, even a plain index card should be thick enough to mail as a postcard, at least by USPS standards. Just write your desire for Good Omens 3 on it, put a stamp and Amazon's address on it, and make sure it's at least 90mm x 127mm (3.5in x 5in).
Isn't Amazon Studios going to notice a bunch of postcards being mailed from the same Web site?
I'm sure they will. But the messages will each be unique, and again, they'll know each card represents a person who had to order the card and postage themselves.
Speaking of unique messages, what should I write?
One sentence is enough. Definitely indicate that you want Season 3 of Good Omens. If you want to add more, you could also write a sentence or two about how much you love the series so far.
Above all, be polite and straightforward! Remember that sarcasm and jokes often do not come across well in print, so it may be best to stick with simple statements that can be taken at face value.
What address should the cards go to?
The co-heads of Amazon Studios appear to be Vernon Sanders and Jennifer Salke; you can address them by name, although I'm guessing it will be someone else who does the reading/glancing.
Amazon Studios's address is:
AMAZON STUDIOS 1620 26TH STREET, SUITE 4000N SANTA MONICA, CA 90404 USA
Where did you get these images?
The images for the nightingale postcard and the Crowley postcard are screencaps from directedbypiper.
The Please Do Not Lick the Walls and Fell the Marvelous posters were downloads from the Amazon X-Ray feature.
The Nice and Accurate Prophecies postcard was adapted from cover art I did for A Nice and Interpretive Fanzine. Most of it is my own, although the mottled background is an extremely blurred version of a free stock texture from Pixabay, users chrisfiedler and/or humusak.
The bookshop postcard is a promotional image from Amazon used in a Den of Geek article.

I cannot remember if I've asked this before, so apologies if it's a repeat. I'm not trying to be pushy, just forgetful.
Do you think there will be an omnibus Volume 2? Or will that be difficult as the books seem to be getting longer as you go? I'm planning on asking for the hardcover omnibus as a gift in a few months, and I'm wondering if I should also request/buy Twelve Points (which I read on AO3 and was pleasantly surprised to find it my favorite so far 💙) or if I should hold out for another collection.
Can't wait to read the next one!
I haven't had the question before, so you're good, I think!
At this point I'm fairly confident there will be a second omnibus. I'm definitely planning on putting the next few novels into one if I can get them out the door and that seems pretty likely. It might only be Twelve Points and Royals/Ramblers (maybe the short stories too) because Royals/Ramblers is kind of big, but it's also about 2/3 of the way complete, and I have notes for the rest that make it highly unlikely I'll abandon it. It's more a question of how long it will be before the next omnibus, because Royals/Ramblers is also rather challenging, but I'm hoping to have that one on shelves no later than early 2024, and to put out at least one, hopefully two more books in 2024. So my recommendation would be not to ask for Twelve Points but definitely to save yourself off a PDF copy of it so you can re-read it in the meantime if you want :)
At the moment things are moving a bit slow because I'm dealing with a whole bunch of stuff right now -- work is always busier August-Oct, I'm trying to get a new website built and a newsletter to go with it, I'm still working on building new social skills, I'm in therapy for the first time in twenty-five years, and I'm dealing with some (minor, mild) medical stuff. But I'm still getting work in on Royals/Ramblers weekly and the longer I work on it the less apprehensive I am about it.
Beyond Royals/Ramblers I have at least half, if not more, of the Football Novel written, again with notes for the rest; I also have a fairly complete plot for Simon's chef novel, although not much is actually written on it yet. Past that I have at least premises for a novel about Ofelia, one about davzda manufacture, the Roman Ruin story, the historical fiction about the Shivadh pirate and his Nantucket Quaker whaler, and a handful of other vague ideas.
I don't know if all of those will get written; the Shivadh novels are, essentially, my fandom right now, and my general tenure in any fandom is between two and five years. However, a lot of the time I've bounced from fandoms because I didn't like the direction canon went in and like....I am making the canon here :D And my time in the Marvel fandom lasted almost ten years, not to mention I boomeranged into Good Omens fandom, something I've never done before. So I am hoping to put out at least two more volumes of collected novels in this setting. :)

Ineffable (Dream of the Endless x f!Reader) - Chapter 1: Daydream
Masterlist - Playlist
best to read the *preview* first before this one
previously on Ineffable....
"Listen. I have a... request. And as such, it is up to you whether you will accept it or not," he mutters deeply, his voice a mere whisper yet I have a feeling it can reach the farthest corner of this room.
My eyes stays locked onto his blue, and I realize I've held my breath for a minute, reeling from what he said.
"Go on," I implore. I want to add, For you - anything.
But I bite my tongue, and wait.
-----------
Tumblr media
He pauses, as if rethinking his decision. I wonder what it could possibly be concerning, if he did not bring it up with the others in the room.
"You're not getting rid of me, are you?" I jest, although there is a tinge of worry in the pit of my stomach, some part of me thinking that he would actually do that.
Well...even if he does, I certainly won't go without a fight. I am valuable here. I belong here. For once, I no longer feel as if I'm running away from something, or towards some impossible goal. I've got my feet firmly planted in place, and I know who I am.
A year ago, I was just a normal student living in a shared house in the London suburbs. As normal as can be, that is. For someone like me, that was a feat. It all started when I was 5, one afternoon when I spoke to my father. Nothing out of sorts there, one would think. But I was speaking to him without uttering a single word, while I was in the room upstairs with my door shut.
"C'mooon Dad, I wish you'd please bring back pizza next time. I'm bored of the salads and all that."
"Sure thing, hon." his voice echoed in the kitchen, "Although, you still have to get some greens every now and th..."
He had whirled around, expecting me to be there. But I wasn't.
I came downstairs an hour later, and he'd chocked the incident off to exhaustion. I was too young to understand what I'd done, but the more it happened, the more wary dad got around me. Thankfully, he didn't really end up treating me any differently. My dad said I was special and it reminded him of my mom. And soon thereafter, we developed a game out of it. I'd figured out that in order to communicate through thoughts, I have to be the one to first direct a message into another person's head. Then, I can hear their responses to me. It's not the same as reading minds, no, and I for one am utterly grateful that it isn't. Not long after, I developed other... powers too - which initially did not manifest in the best way, and so I tried to stifle them for a long time.
It came as second nature to me, I thought other kids could do it too. Up until 1st grade, when I repeatedly asked Marianne if I could borrow her crayons, and she'd started crying and yelling at me to get my voice out of her head. Since then, I'd learned to reel in my thoughts and not cross into other people's heads. But I do slip up sometimes. The results of which are either comical or downright infuriating, on my behalf and theirs.
And at 21, while trying to make ends meet as a student and bookshop clerk in London, I met Fiddler's Green. Gilbert, he called himself.
He had walked in the shop, his towering stature and curious demeanor appearing to announce his entrance. I tiredly looked up from my post, and took him in as he tipped his hat in my direction.
He strolled over to Fiction, and began his perusing. I let him take his time, looking over at him again a few minutes later, and noticing Neil Gaiman's Anansi Boys in his hands.
"Hmmm... sadly I haven't read that one, but I have to say Good Omens and Coraline were impeccable works of his. I'd happily recommend this author..." I sat up, startled, my thoughts had clearly pushed over to him. Please be busy, I thought to myself. You did not hear me. I am simply thinking to myself, that's all there is to it...
"Is that so?" he thought out to me, "Well, I suppose I'll be giving this one a try then."
I wanted to apologize, or to give some sort of excuse, anything. But something told me that he didn't mind. He had this steady smile that was just comforting, that I nearly forgot about my slip-up altogether.
Until... "Don't worry about it, dear. Our thoughts can escape us sometimes. That does not necessarily have to be a bad thing. On the contrary, your advice truly helped. I'm in for a great read, indeed," He jovially comes up to the counter, "So I'll be taking this one, please."
It's safe to say that nothing was ever the same after that day. And I had Gilbert to thank for it. I'd ended up moving in with him, and his wonderfully eccentric collection of flatmates after I was shortly kicked out of my flat, and never looked back.
From then on, I'd learned more about myself and my abilities. Rose Walker and Gilbert were the first people, after my father, to truly see me and accept me for who I was. They understood my abilities, for they too were like me.
And so, if Morpheus thinks I am going to give up this life easily, he is sorely mistaken.
But...
"No," he seems surprised, "Why would you think that?"
Oh, I don't know. You barely speak to me, for one. Apart from when we discuss important matters that relate to the safekeeping of the Dreaming, or when I throw a question your way that you act like you're answering purely out of courtesy.
"I just... what do you really think of me?"
"I...," he starts, and I can see that he was caught off guard, but in plain Morpheus fashion, he tries to appear unaffected.
I stare him down, not letting the question dissipate between us.
"I find you... intriguing," he says after what seemed like the longest pause, "I mean... you're certainly someone who has become important to the Dreaming. I know Lucienne, among others, has grown quite fond of you. And her judgment is one that I hold in the highest regard."
"Hmmm," I am pleased at this, but dare I press on? "But, have you?"
"Have I what?" He asks slowly. Did I stray too far? I may have gotten cocky there, but I hold my ground.
"What I mean is... I have made friends here. No... family. Lucienne, Merv, Matthew, Rose, Gilbert...." I search his face, "Almost everyone, but... you."
His expression loses its signature stoicism, and he gives me a look that is tortured and amused at the same time.
"Am I not a part of that?" The corner of his lips lift slightly.
"Of course you are." You may be the most important of them all. The most captivating. The most perplexing. I add, "But sometimes I feel as if... you'd rather not be."
The silence weighs heavy afterward. But for some reason, I don't feel weary. Not even anxious. I've said what I wanted, and simply being able to be so candid with him like this, strangely gives me calm.
"I... apologize if I've been rather... cold... towards you. If you've felt overlooked or unwanted, it was not my intention," He whispers, "You are...important... to me."
I feel arrested in my seat, all the blood rushing to my head making me feel lightheaded, if that were even possible in this realm.
"Thank you," I manage, "It's okay..."
"No.. you have to know that..," he pauses, "that it's not easy for me. It never has been. These...things."
He stands much closer now, looking down at me, his gaze keeping me in place. When did he get up from his seat?
I take a deep breath, and rise, decreasing the gap between us further.
His eyes flit from my own to my nose to my... lips. He looks pained.
"Especially with you... I...can't..." His words are barely discernible.
"Can't what?"
Another pregnant pause. He rests a tentative hand on my shoulder, as if testing the waters.
And as if this moment was never so pressing, he turns away.
Well, that was something. Nevertheless, this is probably all he can give me right now. In my time around him, I can see how being the literal Lord over an important aspect of the human condition can take its toll.
"You had a request for me?" I try to steer the conversation into a neutral area, "Is it about the mission I have with Gault?"
"About that. I've just decided that I will come with you instead. I need to show you something."
This was a surprise. The two of us have only gone on a mission alone once before, and this resulted from all the others being occupied with their own thing.
"But it can wait," He turns back to look at me, "You should rest."
"Well, technically, I am dreaming," I smile at him.
"You know what I mean," He gives me just a hint of a smile and then starts to leave.
"Morpheus," I voice out in his thoughts, he pauses in his step, "You're important to me too."
He turns back halfway, and I swear I can glimpse a full smile over his shoulder.
"Sweet dreams, y/n."
End of chapter one.
Neil Gaiman reference! I just had to..
Thinking of adding some *spice* to the main plot, and seeing as I'm a sucker for some jealous!Dreamboat or jealous!Reader-- which do y'all prefer? A bit of Corinthian x Reader, or slight Dream x OFC??
Worry not! The Reader's abilities/background will be more fleshed out in the coming chapters.
Also, this fic WILL contain angst. However, I want their relationship to develop healthily and naturally, to some extent. We'll see!

Trial and Error
Fandom: Good Omens Pairing: Ineffable Husbands & Son!Reader Summary: It's all about trial and error, and a lot of error Word Count: 910 Request: @dexpairs-blog: Hey! I just read your ineffable husbands x son!reader fic! It's so good omg!!If you're okay with it could i request some headcanons/or a oneshot (your choice) with them teaching their son how to use his magic or how to fly since they're having a hard time learning A/n: I'm actually considering doing Chicago Med fanfics.
Tumblr media
"He is a child!"
"He needs to learn at some point!"
"I'm literally right here."
Aziraphale and Crowley turn to look at you sitting on a chair, sure you looked like a teenager and if that is the form you decide to stay in, you were technically still a babe in the eyes of heaven and hell. You won't actually reach adulthood till a few hundred years old, so, you were the freest child on the whole planet.
"I want to learn," You say optimistically, "I think I'm ready."
"No, absolutely not," Aziraphale exclaim, coming to suffocate you into a hug, your face squished upon his chest as he holds you dear, "You're still a baby, and no baby needs to learn any flying or magic."
"Angel, love," Crowley drawls out, "Don't forget our baby is not normal-"
"Thanks."
"Watch it," Crowley scowls as you can't help but smirk as you wipe the sweat from your face, finally able to breathe from your father's grip, "He's a demon and an angel, so, we want to prove everyone wrong that he is neutral and better than everyone."
"Dad's right, father," You hummed, as Crowley smugly smiles at his husband, "But, father's also correct, what if I'm not ready."
"You literally said two seconds ago that you were ready."
"Now, now," Aziraphale hummed, "We can't force you to do something you're not ready. But, if you want to really start learning then," He sighs defeatedly, "I won't oppose you."
"I want to do it."
"Then it's decided."
Tumblr media
"Crowley!" Aziraphale screamed, "Why did you push our child off a building?"
"He's durable."
"Not invincible!"
"Are you guys done arguing?" You asked, you were levitating in the air, looking at your parents, arms crossed over your chest.
There you were flying, sure, to the human eyes they can just see you as levitating, but your parents know better that your wings were the reason for you floating. You looked pretty unscathed as a little annoyed but Aziraphale let out a sigh of relief.
"See, angel, knew he could fly."
"That still doesn't warrant the fact that you pushed him off a building, you're lucky Crowley we're going this in the countryside with the only tall building. Imagine the mess we will have if anyone saw him like this!"
"I originally pushed him out of a window, but that didn't work."
"I almost broke my arm."
"(Y/n), I thought you wouldn't tell him that!"
You shrugged your shoulders, looking bemused as your fathers started to argue, you cannot help but smile at their stupidity before lowing yourself gently and hoping they sort themselves out.
Tumblr media
"All you need to do is put your mind to it."
"As if I haven't heard that a million times already," You grumbled under your breath.
"What was that?" Aziraphale turns to look at you confused, almost intrigued with what you said.
You flush in embarrassment, "Nothing, father."
"Alright!" He claps his hands, rubbing them before placing them gently on his lap, "All you need is to focus on what you want to do, say, you were to turn the lights on. Then, you just need to think about lights being on and snap your fingers."
"Easier said than done," You huffed, as you looked at your father with a tired expression, "And this is super easy stuff, why can't I do it?"
"Hey," Your father coos softly, "You're still young, my boy, all we can do is try. Plus, your powers probably haven't come through yet, so there isn't a need to be sad about it."
"I guess..."
"Alright, why don't we try it again? And if not, why don't you get some rest."
You let out one last sigh as you turn to look at the lantern before you, you look at it in disgust as if you wanted to burst the lightbulb within it. You raised your dominant hand before snapping your fingers, what you were expecting was a defeated fizzle that the light attempted to turn on or nothing to happen, but what happened instead was the bulb smashing.
"Oh, dear!"
"Well, that worked," You say with little enthusiasm, as your father looks at you inquisitively, "I was getting annoyed and I couldn't get it out of my mind that I just wanted it to smash than actually turn it on."
"Well..." Aziraphale trailed off, "I guess it did work, well done my boy."
"Thanks, father!"
Tumblr media
"You know, I heard him praying last night," Aziraphale hummed, stirring his tea as Crowley rolled his eyes, "I don't know who to."
"Well, you don't exactly pray to the devil," Crowley replied sarcastically as Aziraphale gives him a look, "I'm just saying, anyway, where is this going?"
"Maybe, we're pushing him too hard," Aziraphale expressed, sighing as he sat down next to his lover, "I heard him praying for his powers to be there, he doesn't want us to be disappointed in him."
"Maybe we are too hard on him."
"Yes, exactly, and he's still a babe, there are many years ahead to let him learn his powers, control them and use them. I don't think we need to rush him at all."
"Then, it's decided, we will talk to him about it."
Aziraphale let out a noise of satisfaction, "Well, this is a first for you, to talk things out."
Crowley simply gives him a smile, "You're lucky I love you and our son."
"Aren't we lucky?"

More Half-and-Half-A-Miracle Thoughts
Part 1: Miracle Power Ranking
Part 2: The Dark side of Aziraphale is here. Part 3: The Third Archangel
I was originally going to add some comments as a reblog to @nofomogirl's post on why the 25 Lazurii miracle was so powerful, but the initial thought I had on the matter slipped away from me during that day, and I was left looking at a glimpse at the viridian green back panel of Aziraphale's waistcoat and wondering what had sparked my original thought, and any attempt to try and grasp it again was a futile as Muriel trying to open Gabriel's file in Heaven.
So I wandered off on other tangents, explored other topics I was curious about, and enjoyed reading the new posts that went up, but the ghost of that viridian green panel kept lurking about with a sharp stick to remind me it was there. So I'm here to post some more thoughts in addition to the op's post that I feel might add to the discussion about the little miracle that worked too well.
I also want to say before I get stuck in (and warning - this is going to be a long one!) that I think no matter how much we discuss this or dig at it, ultimately we just don't have enough information to have a definitive answer as to the why at the moment, and, we may never know. But I'm going to speak because I think I there is at least one thing I haven't seen discussed yet in context with this scene, and should be (at least, I haven't seen it yet - if you have, please let me know.)
So if you're in a TL:DR mode and don't want to open links, here is the list of current theories of why two little "half miracles" made one mighty one:
Theory#1: It's love
Theory #2: It's them
Theory#3: It's a fusion
Theory #4: It's Gabriel
Theory #5: It's the portal (that they did it on top of)
To preface my answering ramble the TL:DR again is - its a fusion of "them" i.e. both #2 and #3 together. As in Aziraphale x Gabriel x Crowley. 3x3x3
Tumblr media
Hang on, that's 27! Not 25! yeah, yeah, I'm not that bad at math. And I'll admit it doesn't fit - it doesn't "snap" into place. But its either that or 5x5 and I wanted to consider all three elements in this miracle working together for the discussion at the start. And there seems to an emphasis on 3's as well as 7's (Maybe you can cut the middle out at the end, once you can see the bigger picture I'm trying to present, but lets leave it this way for now. Maybe it will give you another idea...)
Firstly, consider the three elements, working in synergy. The whole is greater than the sum of its parts. As Crowley describes it in S2E6: " Apparently, if we do a miracle together, it all works a bit too well." (I was originally thinking of the word "gestalt" but on reflection its probably not the right one.)
"...if we..."
Let's ask who is "we" at this point, and how much miracle power they are contributing to the miracle. Are they contributing equally? Yes? Or no? I want to take a closer look at miracle power: the knowns, the unknowns and the possibilities to explore that.
We've already been told that most day-to-day miracles are down in the mili-Lazurii level, a mere few thousandth of the power of the hiding miracle. And this makes sense - we don't see our protagonists bringing the dead back to life willy-nilly. Aziraphale mentions getting into trouble for doing "too many frivolous miracles." But if its one thing Good Omens stands out for its the conspicuous lack of displays of stupendous power. And this actually doesn't help our understanding of the problem.
Indulge me in a "ranking of power" exercise, if you will.
At the top we have the big three - no, four - er, lets make that five actually! Five ineffably, unarguably, omnipotent entities that every one respects and no one will mess with. They can essentially do what ever they will.
God, and Her (ex-) bestie, Satan.
Azrael, the angel of Death.
Adam Young, the Antichrist, who has retained his powers and is still protecting Tadfield.
And lastly the yet-to be revealed second coming of Jesus Christ.
Lets put them all aside and out of the equation.
Next, we have the Metatron, whom we haven't seen lift a finger, only his voice, yet the mere sight of his face evokes fear. How much miracle power can he wield? That's a big unknown, unfortunately. But being the current right-hand being of the Almighty must give him some serious grunt.
The top brass of the respective bureaucracies starts to raise questions. We have our senior Archangels (the seraphim) and the Dukes of Hell. I have no doubt that Gabriel, as Supreme Archangel of all Heaven, should be capable of performing at least a 1 Lazurii miracle on his own if required, and he could even have the potential to stretch to 25 Lazurii...if he could be bothered.
We know that they can be promoted in an out of those positions, and that raises questions about what happens to their powers when they get promoted or demoted. To gain power when promoted? Or lose it when demoted? Or is it a simply a matter of belief? In which case it might rely on the individual's personality.
When looking for examples of expressed power, in both the book and tv series, it is easier to come up with examples of demonic miracles than angelic miracles, and it makes things look a bit biased, imo. I mean, Crowley aside for the moment (I'll get back to him shortly) you have to be impressed with Hastur's escape from the ansaphone into the call center and manifesting into the mass of maggots, for all he was a bit old fashioned and smelled like poo. Shax playing games with Crowley just outside the shop in S2, manifesting as different characters in rapid succession has to be up there with another good demo of demon power (which it certainly worked to needle Crowley into losing his temper with them.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
What do we see the Archangels do in comparison? Hmm. Bitch and snitch. Gossip with Hell on the back stairs. Pretend to be buying pornography from Aziraphale. Then physically punch our angel in guts for fraternizing with a demon before disappearing back to Heaven . Not much.
Tumblr media
OK, so Gabriel arrives on a lightning bolt at Tadfield airbase
Tumblr media
and there is that intriguing discussion with Sandalphon regarding Sodom and Gomorrah (just read above the cut, that's the important bit for this meta later on) where he was doing quite a bit of smiting, but its all off screen and in the distant past, we don't actually see them in action.
Tumblr media
Which brings us back to Crowley and Aziraphale. And then more Aziraphale manipulating Crowley into performing miracles for him so he doesn't have to (the little minx.) The list of miracles I can think of that we have seen Crowley do is far longer and seems more impressive than what Aziraphale has done. Oh, but there is the Eldritch Ball, you say? Controlling multiple people at once? (Hold that thought.) He also sent the soldier at the entry gate of the Tadfield airbase all the way back to his home in the USA in an instant (according to the book) and he flew the moped with both Madame Tracey and Shadwell over the top of the Odegra ring of demon fire to get to Tadfield (again, as mentioned in the book.) And as the op back here says, why didn't they just manifest themselves out? Idiots...
On to Part 2: The Dark Side of Aziraphale.

Book of Life in Good Omens
This was initially supposed to be part of my "Metatron's manipulation" series (link goes to Part 1 of currently 7), specifically the "alternative offers" post I'm currently working on (which will be Part 8). But I've decided it would work better as a separate thing. Allow me to run more freely in any direction my nasty little heart desires. So here you are.
It's hard not to speculate about the Book of Life, considering how many times it was mentioned this season, how big it is, and how nothing seems to come out of it yet. It's also hard to speculate about it, considering how little we know about it. But let's try.
Facts we have from the show
Right after Gabriel appears at Aziraphale's bookshop, Michael calls Beelzebub to inform them that if anyone is found helping Gabriel, Heaven is prepared to use Extreme Sanctions, aka. Book of Life.
When Beelzebub summons Crowley to Hell, they tell him that they heard anybody Heaven finds involved with Gabriel will be dealt with, meaning Extreme Sanctions.
Crowley doesn't initially believe it's a real thing, he insists it's just something they used to joke about to frighten the cherubs.
Beelzebub finally explains what it is: erasing from the Book of Life which equals erasing from existence - "they won't just be gone, they will never have existed".
After Gabriel and Beelzebub are gone, Michael threatens Aziraphale directly, insisting she is authorized to remove the name of anyone who helped Gabriel from the Book of Life.
Metatron shuts her down by saying she doesn't have the authority to do it.
They're... not very helpful. More gossip and hearsay than facts.
A quick look at Christian tradition
It has such a concept as a Book of Life, however, the titular Life is not literal but rather a commonly used metaphor for salvation. It also has a counterpart, the Book of Death. Having your name in the Book of Life simply means being destined for Heaven; having your name moved to the Book of Death equals being condemned to Hell. I've never once come across either of them mentioned in any other context than that of judging human beings (though admittedly, I haven't read that much on them).
So, not very helpful either, and it looks like Neil took only a name and made his own rules.
Possibly. Because we don't know any rules yet. We have no idea who can access and use it and when. We think we know that if you remove someone's name from the Book of Life you erase them completely from existence, but it might not even be true.
Honestly, I wouldn't be all that surprised if The Book of Life turned out to actually be a celestial boogeyman Crowley initially believed it to be. It wouldn't also be inconsistent with the original Good Omens spirit, where supposedly great things turned out to be insignificant and/or easily solved in the end.
But just for the fun of it, let's pull at what we have in Christian tradition and what we know from the show.
Combining the two
Extending the use of both the Book of Life and the Book of Death to supernatural entities is not much of a stretch. However, if this was the case, removing Aziraphale's name from the Book of Life would mean his Fall, not erasure from existence. In fact, this would be exactly how the Fall would happen - you remove an angel's name from the book of beings meant to be in Heaven and move it to the book of beings meant to be in Hell, and you get a demon.
It also explains how it could be done the other way - a demon's name could be removed from the Book of the Death, reentered into the Book of Life, and bam! fully angelic status restored. After all, we were made aware this season that Fall could be reversible.
Honestly, it would make a lot of sense to me.
In the Resurrectionists minisode Aziraphale tells Crowley: "I am good. You, I'm afraid, are evil. But people get a choice." If you were a little taken aback that Aziraphale says things like that at that point and found it somewhat jarring, that's because it kind of is. The line is taken directly from the original book, where it was explicitly stated that Aziraphale and Crowley only started developing free will on Earth, due to extended exposure to humans. It was part of their "going native" and what made them different. But in the show, it's quite clearly not the case.
When it comes to morality, angels and demons in the show are a lot like people. They're neither static nor quoy, at least not inherently so. They're fully capable of growth and change and making their own decisions, both good and bad. So IF we agree, that being assigned to either Heaven or Hell is a reflection of someone's moral status, and someone's moral status can change with their choices and actions, it's logical that there is a mechanism that technically allows them to be reassigned as many times as necessary.
It also makes sense that Heaven would block that mechanism after the Rebellion and the Fall, and insists that whatever side anyone is on, that's final. All that's left is to fight each other.
Is it show-canon compliant?
There's one major issue with that theory - nobody in the show seems to perceive the Book of Life this way. It's synonymous with literal life ie. existence. It's not tied to Fall in any way. There's no mention of the Book of Death.
How do I defend against it?
It's not that hard, really.
As I've pointed out already, nobody seems to really know what they are talking about. The Book of Life? It rings a bell, there was such a thing, although maybe it wasn't, maybe it was a joke... Nobody is a reliable source of information and I'm pretty sure that whatever we will learn about the Book of Life in season 3 will prove information from season 2 to be incomplete and misleading.
Of course that doesn't exactly support my theory, it's just not an obstacle it seems to be at first glance.
And just in case it wasn't clear, I'm not really trying to predict where the story will go, but rather speculate for the fun of it.
So, I merrily speculate several reasons why there are two books whose purpose is to decide who belongs in Heaven and who belongs in Hell, but everybody in season 2 believes there's one book whose purpose is to decide who exists.
Reason #1: The truth about two books was hidden by some higher-up in Heaven, possibly Metatron, to hide the inconvenient fact that all there is to being an angel or a demon is to be entered into an appropriate list. That can be edited. Unlimited amount of times.
Reason #2: The misinformation was created and spread by the Metatron specifically for this situation. He expected that whoever might meddle with the whole Gabriel affair would either be a demon, who you cannot exactly threaten with falling, or Aziraphale, who might not care enough for that to be effective.
Reason #3: Everyone's knowledge comes from before the Fall. So it's partly forgotten and partly censored, but above all, before the Fall, when everybody's names were in the Book of Life, they might simply have misunderstood the meaning of having your name removed from it, as it's never happened before.
Reason #4: Erasing someone's existence completely is in fact possible if you remove someone's name from one book and never enter it into the other.
(Please note that this generates a lot of questions on how exactly you move names between the two books if being in neither means you don't exist and never have. There would have to be some security measures to make sure people won't just disappear during transfer.)
Reason #5: Being erased from existence is a metaphor for the fundamental transformation you undergo when shifting from an angel to a demon (and possibly vice versa). Especially if you consider that a supernatural entity wouldn't probably just have their name moved, they'd most likely be entered under a new name. So they would be the same being but not the same person anymore.
Pick any combination of the above.
Who should fear the Book of Life?
The book is first mentioned when Michael tips Beelzebub that Heaven is prepared to use it against anyone found helping Gabriel. Beelzebub later conveys the message to Crowley, plus an extended explanation.
The key word here is anybody. If Gabriel was helped by both Aziraphale and Crowley, they were both risking punishment.
But Crowley acts as if only Aziraphale is in danger and indeed, when Michael brings it up again, in the finale, she only threatens Aziraphale and completely ignores Crowley.
Why?
Crowley can be easily explained by his continuous disregard for his own safety. But Michael? Why did she call Hell to warn Beelzebub how serious Heaven was about it if she wasn't ready to actually go through and punish a demon? Does she not realize how deeply Crowley was involved? Does she think Aziraphale did it on his own? Is she reluctant to actually administer the punishment that feels outside her jurisdiction? Or is she simply more focused on Aziraphale because he pissed her off?
If we assume my theory about the Books of Life & Death is correct, then Michael's threat was an empty one for a demon, whose name was no longer in the Book of Life anyway. But if we assume my theory is right, then none of them should be aware of that.
However.
If we assume my theory is true minus Reason #4 (the loophole that actually allows for someone to be permanently destroyed from existence), let's think about the theory that Metatron blackmailed Aziraphale into taking his offer by indirectly threatening Crowley's existence.
Aziraphale is unaware of how it all works. He picks on Metatron's threat and interprets it in accordance with how he believes the Book of Life works. He comes to the conclusion that if he doesn't obey, Crowley will be removed from existence. But Metatron actually means the metaphorical erasure I described as Reason #5. He means the destruction of Crowley's personality and most of his self. The trauma that would happen if Crowley underwent the transformation that is the result of being moved from one book to the other. At the same time, Metatron says that if Aziraphale becomes the Supreme Archangel, he could make Crowley an angel again. This would happen by removing a demon's name from the Book of Death and entering him, possibly under another name, into the Book of Life.
Yes, I have amused myself during the weekend by creating a theory in which the thing Metatron threatens Aziraphale with if he doesn't obey and the thing he promises as a reward if he does IS THE SAME EXACT THING.
Spread the news to all the angst-loving mostly canon-compliant fanfiction authors!
Removing things from existence
As a final point in this post that has long run away from me and I'm not sure has a point any longer, I'd like to remind you of something.
Mentioning the Book of Life in season 2 is not the first time that the concept of removing something from existence and making it so it would never have happened appears in Good Omens Universe.
Please remember Adam Young, the Antichrist, who faced Satan at the Tadfield Airbase and declared he was not his father and never had been. Reality listened to him and Satan disappeared. However, it didn't change the timeline, didn't erase the events that already happened, and didn't exactly strip Adam of his powers.
What does it mean?
No idea.
Thank you for your patience.

Good Omens Fanfic Friday (08 Mar 2024)
Probably the smallest list I've made yet, due to the sheer size of #RAINBOWROAD.
#RAINBOWROAD (407K; Rated E) by @nieded
Human AU. This has been recommended on the GO subreddit several times now, and for a very good reason. It's an extraordinary series that I honestly can't say enough good things about. No, really, I can't. I'm lucky these sentences are coherent, because I'm so addicted to reading these I'm living on the bare minimum amount of sleep needed to keep my brain from melting.
There are currently five completed works in the series and a sixth in progress, but the main story is told over the three long works, so there's no reason to wait for the sixth work to be finished before you start reading. You could skip the two shorter ones completely without it affecting the story, but they're both just as interesting and well-written as the main story.
Crowley is a veteran Formula 1 driver whose personal life caused a rather unpleasant fall from grace. Now he drives for the only team that will sign him, and he's constantly scrutinized by the team's management for any sign of bad behavior. Aziraphale, who in this story is called Ezira Phale (first and last name) is a rookie F1 driver who is picked up by a new team run by distillery owner, Gabriel and his sister, Michael. #RAINBOWROAD is both a beautiful and realistic love story between the Ineffable Husbands and a story dedicated to the author's love for racing.
You don't need to know anything about Formula 1 racing, because the author explains everything in such a fascinating way that you'll be talking pole positions and using words like chicane and name-dropping real life drivers in no time. I literally didn't even know which kind of racing Formula 1 was until I googled it, and this story will make you fall in love with the sport (even if I still don't intend to actually watch any races). (If you like how Old Vines (190K; Rated E) was an exquisite ode to wine and winemaking, this is similar).
And the characters! I LOVE Ezira and Crowley so much here! Ezira has enough of Aziraphale's traits that he doesn't feel like a completely different character, but he's a 25-year-old adrenaline junkie whose first love is driving very fast cars, not books or food (though he still loves both). The author does a great job of making Ezira very good at his job but not supernaturally so. He's a rookie driver; he's not magically better than the top people in the field (including Crowley), but you can see the talent there. His placements feel very realistic. Crowley is probably a little closer to his demon counterpart, from his clothes and shades to his snarky personality. He's extremely good at his job, and like Ezira, he loves what he does.
Newt makes an appearance as another F1 driver, while Anathema is an engineer. The Them and Warlock are all grown up, working as mechanics and engineers for various teams. Beelzebub is Crowley's agent, and their snarky and short-tempered, but secretely soft, personality works really well with Crowley. There are some great original characters, too, who will stick with you just as much as the canon characters.
The second book is very angsty, but it does get better by the end. I had to take a day off reading it and take a look at some lighter stories before I could go back to it. But once I did, I forewent sleep to finish it.
The third book is set several years later when they're both veteran drivers and a well-established couple. I haven't finished it (because I did have to actually sleep at some point), but the author writes that it's more fluff-oriented than the first two, and I have no reason to doubt them.
This is one of the most professionally-written and utterly fascinating Good Omens stories I've read yet.
***
A.Z. Fell & Co. Est. 1800: The Bookshop Chronicles (as told by Yelp) (18K 11/? chapters; Rated T)
Normally I only recommend stories that are complete or nearly so (within a couple of chapters), but I feel like this story can be read without waiting for the whole completed story, because currently it's seasons 1 and 2 (and in-between) told through Yelp reviews of the bookshop. This is the kind of genuinely delightful story that keeps me smiling from the first moment, especially when Aziraphale and Crowley start bickering in the comments. Then there are the commenters who are convinced Aziraphale and Crowley are cryptids and present some rather convincing evidence. The Whickber Street shopowners pop in on occasion, along with Jimbriel and Inspector Constable. Try to read it with the workskin on, because the author makes the story look like Yelp reviews.

FIC WRITER INTERVIEW
Tagged by @lamialamia
How many works do you have on AO3?
13
What’s your total AO3 word count?
423,658. Hoo boy.
What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
Fundamentally People (Good Omens (TV) Kudos: 782
The Most Dangerous Thing is to Love (Sherlock (TV) Kudos: 283
S2.7: 49:07: A De-Montage (Bridgerton (TV) Kudos: 279
The Opposite of Undercurrent (Sherlock (TV) Kudos: 275
The Force of The Interaction (Sherlock (TV) Kudos: 238
Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
Yes and sometimes almost immediately after I get them and frequently I stop and reread them and read them aloud and tell everyone they were the best part of my day.
What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?
I write exclusively happy endings, because I have a pathlogical need for a happy ending, and every fic I've written happened because I wanted it to exist so I could read it. That said, maybe From This Day To The Ending of The World? Because...it's still a little complicated? (Not really though, it's still A Happy Ending TM)
What’s the fic you’ve written with the happiest ending?
Uh. They're all really happy. But I think Fundamentally People was the sweetest.
Do you write crossovers?
Haven't yet!
Have you received hate on a fic?
No, never have (thank heavens)
Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
Ohhhhh yes. Looking at my fandoms, it's often the "oh no, what's happening I seem to be very attracted to you, what can that possibly mean? NOTHING AT ALL CLEARLY except we should do that more but never ever talk about and certainly not talk about FEELINGS." Sometimes it's that. Sometimes it's "ohholygodwecanbonebecauseyoulovemetoowhew." One time it was "We are in love and married but Victorian Repression so we don't quuiiiiiite know how to do sex?"
Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Not that I'm aware of.
Have you ever had a fic translated?
Yes! Or they're in process, anyway...
Have you ever co-written a fic before?
No! It would be very fun to try, though!
What’s your all-time favorite ship?
Johnlock Winnix Ineffable Husbands Brad/Nate Why would you ask someone to choose between their best beloveds?
What’s a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will?
I'm pretty good about finishing, actually. I have some ideas kicking around that I might never get to, but I don't have anything I've genuinely started that I've left undone.
What are your writing strengths?
I think I'm very good at dialogue, and decent at pacing (current fic-in-progress notwithstanding grrr). I think I capture voice pretty well.
What are your writing weaknesses?
I'm not always great at setting a scene. I tend to rush through, and I feel like I'm capable of quite lovely writing, but I'm impatient and skip over it. I'm not always great about plotting - I long to write something heavily plotted and gripping, and then I'm like...crickets.
What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?
Whelp, as somebody with one (1) language skill, I'm not great at it. On occasion, I've needed to use another language--Russian and German have come up recently, I've called upon Good Old Google Translate which is obviously not ideal, but I checked in with a couple of friends when I wasn't sure it was correct. One time I intentionally used Bad French (it was for Aziraphale, who is supposed to be bad at French, and a French-speaking reader was very upset. I explained why I did it, and it was fine, but it was pretty funny).
What was the first fandom you wrote for?
My very first fanfic was for Twelfth Night because I am a Giant Nerd.
What’s a fandom/ship you haven’t written for yet but want to?
I'm in the midst of a Gen Kill fic, so that's on its way. I want to write IronStrange! And Webgott!
What’s your favourite fic you’ve written?
I'm very proud of From This Day To The Ending of The World. It was a new form of storytelling that I'd always wanted to try, and I'm really happy with how it turned out. I'm also really pleased with The Most Dangerous Thing is to Love because it did exactly what I wanted it to do (i.e., it was the fic I wanted to read).
Wheeee tagging @jenkil @latibvles @basilone and anyone else who feels like it!

watching good omen season 1
ep 1 pilot
haven't seen a lot of it, mostly that people like it, that it's made by people people really like and that it's gay (or at least people make it gay) so you know, good pick for me. and i just watched to animations/animatics on youtube with bad endings and bad endings fuck me up, so hopefully this is happier. intro is a fucking banger. also god has a fem voice? nice. accurate skin colour for the earliest humans. not surprised, but appreciated. making fun of theology and great banter? i love it.
ominous picnic basket. oh... actually quite biblically fitting it seems. i REALLY hope they don't expect me to remember these names too well. many of the characters seem fun though.
of course the american politician says bs like "a regular y chromosome son". which i'm sure has not been tested as you 1: don't know the gender yet. 2: phenotype does not denote genotype.
i wonder who and how they'll figure out who has the wrong baby. "i don't recall what horror of history we had a lunch over, but i do recall what we had." the BEST dynamic.
will they even figure out they got the wrong one? ok, i know that working with an actual 5 year old would be a nightmare... but that kid is like 12.
well done making both heaven and hell look like shit. do you want grime overpopulating or empty, liminal, office spaces?
brilliant end of episode 1.
ep 2 the book
damn the forces of hell are so bloody rude and evil. and so many quick jokes.
question: what are the 4 horsemen of the apocalypse supposed to be in christianity? both biblically and in modern belief? they are separate from devils and angels.
i love a witch that also uses an ipad in her rituals.
"sorry, right number" seriously the humour in this show is so brilliant. i really hope the story is able to match it.
ep 3 hard times
a black knight shrugging is way too funny. i love these two. just two old friends helping each other out, it's just that that's diametrically opposing one another. the angel doing some tempting, the demon some miracles. and upper management doesn't care.
awh, they are just so cute together.
excuse me you are playing intro now? 28 minutes in? that's not an intro. that's a bloody intermission!
they really succeed at making heaving seem so extremely bad. extremely wide shot or extreme close-up. it's so incredibly uncomfortable.
the prime minister has a nice flat chested fucker in his bed.... good for him if he's not cheating.
"mend it all"/"end it all" whispers. really neat.
ep 4 saturday morning funtime
of course he was condemned for nothing more then asking questions.
ah, they got rid of pestilence to replace them with pollution. it's a good change, but feels pretty pre 2020.
oh no, i find his death so sad. he had a love, why kill him? i know the apocalypse is coming but still.
i still really hope that the presidents son turns out to be trans to just break the things he said at the start. then again it wouldn't really work as it's not the kids he said it about. idk, i guess i hope of screen son turns out to be trans to spite the person that'll never know... yea i'm holding out hope for something that doesn't matter.
azi being send to heaving is SO bad. his bookshop possibly burning down is emotionally worse. it was going to be the last episode of the day. but i started watching because i couldn't deal with bad endings, so i guess i'll have to watch one more.
ep 5 the doomsday option
Azi going full rogue (finally).
man that's the most obvious cold reading ever.
the guard reads a neil gaymen book. cute.
sir... your car is... more then a little on fire.
ep 6 the very last day of the rest of their lives
are we doing a flash back episode for the last episode of the season?
oh, please let him rebuild the car just like i want the bookshop rebuild?
the way to defeat the end of the world is to believe and stand (and i hope work) for a world that wouldn't end. a bit on the nose but very nice.
and of course with Terry Pratched being involved death is not to be defeated, just not hastened along.
a kid not doing the one thing they were supposed to do.... there's a trans/gay message in there. also That's Just What Kids Do! you wanted an 11 year old to do what they were told? that's the first part of the problem.
for a TV series that's a pretty good satan. oh that is SO clever. kind of time fucking, but not really so long as you never introduce time travel so it's only true from now on. oh, is it a nicer ending then i though? YES IT IS! \o/
it "ends" as it starts: with a garden and an apple. ok, make it more explicit why don't you.
oh, you subtle bastards. i love it. other scene's now make more sense too, oh how i love it.
ok, yea it makes sense people go wild over this as it's really bloody great.

Since you hated the angels in SPN (i can't disagree with you about how they butchered them for people who are religious)
What do you think of good omens if you read/watched it?
I've both read and watched it!
I think it's a very good book and a very good adaptation, though I prefer the book and don't plan on seeing the upcoming season of the show.
At the risk of ruffling feathers, I think the best parts of the book came from Pratchett, I really like Gaiman's work (Having read American Gods, Coraline, and one of his short story collections) but... the two authors have different strengths, I think I'll say, and Good Omens played more on Pratchett's strengths than Gaiman's.
Mainly, with Gaiman, my issue is that while he comes up with very good concepts and has the prose to back his ideas up, he can't really carry a plot through to a satisfying end. His short stories are great because it doesn't become a problem, his attempt to write full length stories tend to suffer.
That being said, reading Good Omens you get the idea the authors wrote it to have fun and mess around with nifty characters and "hehe well what if 'his number shall be' was actually referring to a phone number!". Power to them, I'm guilty of the same when I cowrite with @theoriginalcarnivorousmuffin, but the thing that strikes me about Good Omens is that there's a lot that... doesn't actually need to be in the book.
Let's say that we take out Shadwell, Madame Tracy, Anathema, and Newt Pulcifer.
How does this change things?
We lose out on a lot of the fun interactions that make Good Omens what it is, but the story wouldn't actually change at all. Perhaps they don't have to, I rather enjoy that Aziraphale and Crowley risked everything to prevent the Apocalypse, the novel is about an angel and a demon preventing the Apocalypse, only for them to not matter at all as Adam makes the decision on his own: but rather than ending the book on a punchline as the entire cast just sort of stands around awkwardly wondering if they can congratulate themselves when they uh haven't done anything, there's instead the soaring music of "They did it!"
"Uh, what did they do?"
"Something, I'm sure!"
Very Good Omens of them, but there's a strange dissonance where it seems we really are meant to think they did something.
Adam too is an odd character, in that he has been the unknowing God of his little world who is strongly implied to have created The Them (quite literally, given how his power seems to work). He is a facsimile of a human, one who seems to very much want a perfect human life and is capable of creating this for himself, but in doing so becomes so artificial that the weather reports give Newt the creeps.
And yet we don't... do anything with him. He's too humanised to come across as what I described above, but not human enough for me to not see him the way I do. He's just sort of there.
So yes, I have complaints about Good Omens, but overall it truly is a delightful book, just one where I would have chosen differently from the authors at many points.

Good Omens Fic Rec: The Truth Remains
Raphael had been the third angel ever created, and he’d raised himself first with Michael’s clumsy help. Then he’d turned around and raised three more siblings, and loved them all so fiercely it hurt. He'd loved Aziraphale too, more than either of them really knew. And then, he fell. He lost everything. The bond he held with his siblings was ripped away, leaving an aching, empty void. And while he still has Aziraphale, the angel doesn't recognize the archangel who taught him how to care about the Earth. And Crowley refuses to tell him who he was, or how Aziraphale's voice is the one thing that can soothe the ache in his soul that wants, so badly, to feel a connection again. A story through the ages as an angel and a demon come to terms with their shared past.
Length: 200,154 words
AO3 Rating: Mature
Best for: At Home, Angst, Through the Ages, Canon AU
Triggers: Violence

*Minor Spoilers* This story is gorgeous. It is bittersweet and melancholic, and if you haven't read this one yet I think it's a must read. Crowley in this story is actually the supposedly dead Raphael. This is not a story that just drops that fact into the established canon like an Easter egg. This is a full canon AU. All the events we're familiar with will happen, but the context has completely changed. I will leave all the major details for you to learn. Just know that it will break your heart over and over again.
This is a Crowley centric story. It will unravel his history as Raphael and the relationship he had with his siblings and Aziraphale. He is a very wounded and guarded thing here. And lethally protective of Aziraphale, which surprised me. The thing is, Aziraphale knew Raphael and had loved him in Heaven. Now he is haunted by the guilt and grief he feels over losing him. How awful it is for Crowley to have his love grieve for him and be unable to say, "I'm here, I'm not gone," Remember, I said this would break your heart.
You can expect a very somber Through the Ages tale here. Not that there isn't lightness, but it's not a silly story. Its contemplative and the periods of time we visit are very painful for Crowley. This Crowley is very empathetic, doing whatever he can to save and heal the humans around him. There is a beautiful scene involving Crowley and Jesus here. It gives them more of a relationship than the canon hints at and it’s gorgeous. He pushes Crowley to believe that maybe this was all meant to be, that Crowley is still a part of God's love and plans. Despite all his resentment for her, Crowley still desperately wants answers and to feel God's love. It is the love an abused child feels for their mother. There's also some really touching moments with Eve, and what he told her before she took the apple. I haven't seen that particular scene in fanfic often. Maybe I'm missing them, but this is the standard I will hold anything else to.
This story is completely safe in public if you wish, but I think it's best for at home. It's a more poetic prose that you'll want to pay attention to. When I tried reading it at work, it was a lot harder to fully immerse myself. I hope I didn't make this story seem like a downer. It's really not! It's beautiful and slow, and had some excellent insights into Crowley's psyche. There are more stories in this series, but I have not read them yet. I'm sure I'll get to them because I definitely will want to return to this world.

a certain romance - arctic monkeys
happiness/the gondola man - elliott smith

Day 4- Clutch: Folio/OFC
30 days of Bad Omens Bingo Card here Masterlist Can also be found on Wattpad and AO3 This is a work of fiction based on real people. If you don't like it, don't read it.
_______________
Pairing: Folio/OFC (Lesley)
Warning: No smut in this one- just fluff, motorcycles, short one-shot
_______________
"You want to WHAT?!" Nick screeched through the store, turning to face Lesley, his best friend since childhood.
"C'mon, Nicky! You said you'd teach me and yet I still haven't learned!" Lesley shoved his shoulder, pushing him gently into the shelf.
"Yeah Les, I did... but with my baby?" He put his hand over his heart, feigning hurt.
"Ugh, you're so dramatic." She waved him off, walking away towards the back of the store where they displayed their motorcycle helmets.
Nick was back home for the summer off of tour and his motorcycle was finally out of the shop from where someone decided to rear end it. He was excited to ride again, but he had made plans with Lesley for when he got back home to travel down to the beach. He figured they could take his beloved Harley since Lesley had never ridden before. First, she needed proper gear so to the store they went.
Lesley did make a good point, though. Nick did promise to teach her how to drive a motorcycle, but he didn't think she would actually want to. Now he was stuck between breaking a promise, or trusting his clueless best friend to ride his bike.
He didn't dwell on the thought too long, following behind her to the back corner of the store for her to pick out a helmet.
"The number one rule of riding bikes is that you dress for the slide, not the ride." He told her, grabbing her shoulders and moving her away from the faceless half-helmets to the full faced ones. "Losing body parts and getting gnarly road rash isn't fun."
She shot him a playful glare before picking up a bright pink helmet, twisting it in her hands. "What about this one, Nick?"
He took the helmet from her hands and looked it over, reading the helmet's information tag. He nodded, handing it back over to her. "This one is highly rated. It's a good one. Plus it has a communicator in it, so we can talk to each other without having to yell over the engine."
She smiled, deciding that this was the helmet for her. She left Nick standing there as she went to the counter to pay for all of her items. The leather jacket Nick had to argue with her about included.
_______________
"Okay, ready?" Nick asked, tension in his jaw. He made through on his promise, taking Lesley to a deserted parking lot to teach her how to properly drive the motorcycle. He decided to teach her later that day, so when they left for the trip tomorrow she wouldn't annoy him the whole time. She didn't mean any harm in constantly reminding him, she just didn't see Nick that often and was excited to learn something new.
She took a deep breath sitting on the bike, Nick standing right next to her. She looked up at him through the face shield on her helmet and nodded.
"Remember, you can talk. Our communicators are synced."
"Right, sorry. This is a lot of information at once. I'm just...trying to remember."
"Dude, you're good. That's why I'm here. Ask me questions, tell me what you're thinking.
"I just ask that you don't burn my clutch because it's new and hasn't been broken in yet."
Her eyes widened at his words. Things on bikes needed to be broken in?! Who in their right mind sells a bike with it not completely ready for the rider?!
He laughed at her shocked face, reaching his hand out to give her the keys. "That's a normal thing, Les. Each driver is different. You want the motor to be catered to the driver, not the other way around." He reassured her.
She grabbed the keys from his outstretched hand, placing them in the ignition. "Whatever you say, Nicky. This is why I wanted you to teach me. You know way more about this stuff than anyone else I know."
"Alright, so go ahead and make sure the bike is in neutral. Look for 'N' to be lit up."
"Done."
"Now, start her up!"
Lesley gripped the key in her hand and turned it, hearing the engine below her purr to life. Her face split open, forcing a wide smile on her face, as she looked up to Nick, who's expression mirrored hers. The gentle vibrations from the engine below her was an accomplishing feeling- she got step one down successfully.
"Now here's the fun part. Remember how to drive a stick shift, Les?" Nick asked, leaning forwards and placing his arm on her shoulder, her nodding in confirmation.
"Same applies, but the controls are opposite. Clutchwith your hand, shift with your foot. One down, five up. Then the opposite to come to a stop. Try it out."
He backed away from Lesley, crossing his arms over his chest waiting for her to be comfortable enough to try to move the bike. He knew she would get the hang of it rather quickly, he was the one who also taught her how to drive a manual car. She was able to grasp that concept within three tries, and now she frequently drove her dad's old stick-shift pickup truck with the worn transmission.
The first time she attempted to move, she stalled the bike out. She didn't give the bike enough acceleration as she lifted off the clutch, causing the bike to lurch forwards slightly. Nick was immediately next to her, reaching out and grabbing the bike to keep it steady so she wouldn't topple over and get hurt.
"Dammit!" She yelled into the communicator, throwing her hands into the air. Nick chuckled at her, shaking his head. She was always a perfectionist, getting agitated if she didn't succeed at something the very first try.
"Give it some more throttle. You got this, Les. You're overthinking." He tapped his finger on the visor of her helmet.
She groaned, putting the bike into neutral before starting it again, and feeling the engine roar to life beneath her. She sat calmly, taking deep breaths and letting the vibrations of the motor sink into her bones. She remembered what Nick had told her: just like her dad's truck, the bike is finicky. "Treat her with respect and she'll glide over the road with you."
Nick backed away slowly again, standing not too far away in case Lesley needed him again. The man had the patience of a saint, and it was obvious in him calm and soothing demeanor.
Feeling like she was ready, Lesley pulled the clutch in with her left hand and kicked the shifter down into first. Taking another deep breath and closing her eyes, she cleared her mind and decided to let the bike tell her what to do. Like what Nick had taught her before: she would feel for the pull of the gear catching, and accelerate from there.
Letting off of the clutch slowly, she waited for that pull, giving the bike a tad bit of throttle to even out so she wouldn't stall again. She opened her eyes and looked to her right, seeing Nick walking beside her. He had both of his thumbs up and was nodding enthusiastically. She picked up her feet, and gave the bike more throttle, the bike gently gaining speed.
"Don't forget to shift when she's ready!" Nick called to her, coming to a stop and watching her slowly drive away. He heard her giggle in her helmet, accelerating more, as she gained distance between them.
He stood there with his arms crossed, watching his best friend with amazement. Her little giggles in his ear were bringing a smile to his face. She was a determined woman, that was for sure- never giving up on something she had set her mind to, and learning new things with ease.
He heard the bike go quiet for a moment and the click of her switching into a higher gear, then she was accelerating more.
"Nicky, look! I'm doing it, Nick!" She yelled into his ear, excitement coating her voice.
"Alright, bring her back to me. Remember to lean as you turn so you don't fall."
He watched her make the turn, leaning into it, before the headlights were casting shadows behind him.
"Can I just pull the clutch and stop like in dad's truck?" She asked as her hand came up to grip the lever on the left hand side.
"Yeah, that's a good idea." He told her, hearing the roar of the engine quiet down slightly when she pulled the clutch in.
She came to a stop next to him, gearing down the bike back into neutral, before turning the key in the ignition to the off position. She jumped off of the bike and lowered the kickstand, pulling off her helmet and turning to Nick.
He was pulling his helmet off of himself when he felt her body collide with his, her hands coming around his back to grip around his torso tightly.
"I did it! Did you see that?! I can ride a bike now!"
Helmet in his hand, he brought his arms around her to embrace her, chuckling at her words. "I saw. I'm very proud of you, Les. You did great." He squeezed her tightly once before letting go and taking a step back. When she looked up at him, she had a face splitting smile and her eyes twinkled with delight.
"You'll need more practice because you only got to second gear and there's no traffic, but we're going to save that for later." He brought his hand up and ruffled the hair on the top of her head.
"I know, but at least I got the hardest part down! The rest is super easy." She removed his hand, smoothing her brown hair back down.
"Let's get something to eat before I take you home. We gotta pack for tomorrow anyway. Just please, Les, don't pack too much shit. You see what I'm working with here."
She agreed, placing her helmet back onto her head. She waited for Nick to hop onto the bike first, before she climbed on behind him.
As Nick was driving away from the parking lot, he started shaking his head as he heard Lesley through the communicator: "Can I drive tomorrow?"
