Golden Hour
Golden light filtered through the windows, a far gentler dawn than one England believed he was deserving, or even capable of. An oxymoron lying in repose, he rolled over to face Germany with a weary sigh; Grey half-circles hung beneath his eyes, a gentle tsk escaping his lips as he fingered along Germany’s sharp cheekbones. ‘’Morning, sweetheart.’’ Such a term of endearment, one that made England briefly pause to consider the nature of such a phrase. War, clattering in all its bloody glories - vibrant as ever behind closed eyelids, paper-thin skin marking the border between this realm and the other, a tapestry still hung. He didn’t want to think about that right now. His hand ghosted along Germany’s jawline, heart welling with a tender pleasure as he leaned forward and pressed a kiss to the taller man’s forehead; An act of reverence, awash in light that England could only describe as too holy. He was his priest and Germany his God, and he was determined to worship quietly every square of skin (and perhaps, England thought privately, he too could be holy - cast in his light, like King Midas and his golden touch). England moved to kiss Germany’s scar, a ragged thing that cleaved like a river, strength incarnate - but a  painful memory to Germany all the same.
Perhaps one that he could, hopefully, kiss away. Replace with a different one. ‘’I love you.’’ England whispered softly, tensing as Germany stirred, ears burning as his husband leaned into his chest, and promptly buried his face there. ‘’Uh-!’’ His hands clenched, balled into white-knuckle fists as his thoughts promptly short-circuited, heart thudding against his chest. Cute-, England thought sheepishly (a red hue had bloomed across his face, and with it came a stir of shame). Ups and downs, as his life went - and as it went for his life, it also went for his lovelife. Lord knows he’d fucked up, and now the Lord was giving him this? England stared quietly (reverently, holier than he thought he was capable of) and brushed his hand through Germany’s hair and kissed him again. England wasn’t going to look a gift horse in the mouth, and if the Lord was granting him this…God, he was going to start being a holier man starting tomorrow. ‘’I love you.’’ England spoke more insistently, laying down to wrap his arm around Germany and pull him closer (heart to heart, ribs to ribs, vulnerable soul to vulnerable soul). His hand drifted towards Germany’s, fingers lacing between his husband’s, England’s heart swelling with affection. His husband’s hands were calloused, strong - much like the rest of him, shoulders broad and, Lord forgive him, he was built like a mountain.
War could rage on, he knew that better than anyone. They knew that better than anyone, but dear God…dear God, England thought as he watched the light play through his hair, it could not reach them here. At least not now, and England would be damned if he let himself be mired in the notions of what if, what if, what if that the future so oft flung his way. This was just another morning, the sun would rise again and again and again; It was the same fucking sun, it had always been the same fucking sun…but it was a sight that England was not sure he’d ever find unsurprising, even after decades upon decades. Did he really deserve such mundanity as waking up next to someone he loved?
England closed his eyes, and thanked the Lord regardless. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

“‘Come out, English soldier; come out here to us.’ For some little time we were cautious, and did not even answer. Officers, fearing treachery, ordered the men to be silent. But up and down our line one heard the men answering that Christmas greeting from the enemy. How could we resist wishing each other Merry Christmas, even though we might be at each other’s throats immediately afterwards? So we kept up a running conversation with the Germans, all the while our hands ready on our rifles. Blood and peace, enmity and fraternity - war’s most amazing paradox. The night wore on to dawn - a night made easier by songs from the German trenches, the pipings of piccolos and from our broad lines laughter and Christmas carols. Not a shot was fired." -Peace on the Western Front: Goodwill in No-man's Land - The Story of the World War I Christmas Truce {Smithsonian Magazine}

During the first eight weeks of World War I, French and British troops stopped the German attack through Belgium into France outside Paris at the First Battle of the Marne in early September 1914. The Germans fell back to the Aisne valley, where they dug in. In the First Battle of the Aisne, the Franco–British attacks were repulsed and both sides began digging trenches to economise on manpower and use the surplus to outflank, to the north, their opponents. In the Race to the Sea, the two sides made reciprocal outflanking manoeuvres and after several weeks, during which the British forces were withdrawn from the Aisne and sent north to Flanders, both sides ran out of room. By November, armies had built continuous lines of trenches running from the North Sea to the Swiss frontier.
The Christmas truce (German: Weihnachtsfrieden; French: Trêve de Noël; Dutch: Kerstbestand) was a series of widespread unofficial ceasefires along the Western Front of the First World War around Christmas 1914. The truce occurred five months after hostilities had begun. Lulls occurred in the fighting as armies ran out of men and munitions and commanders reconsidered their strategies following the stalemate of the Race to the Sea and the indecisive result of the First Battle of Ypres. In the week leading up to 25 December, French, German and British soldiers crossed trenches to exchange seasonal greetings and talk. In some areas, men from both sides ventured into no man's land on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day to mingle and exchange food and souvenirs. There were joint burial ceremonies and prisoner swaps, while several meetings ended in carolling. Men played games of football with one another, creating one of the most memorable images of the truce. Hostilities continued in some sectors, while in others the sides settled on little more than arrangements to recover bodies. The following year, a few units arranged ceasefires but the truces were not nearly as widespread as in 1914; this was, in part, due to strongly worded orders from commanders, prohibiting truces. Soldiers were no longer amenable to truce by 1916; the war had become increasingly bitter after the human losses suffered during the battles of 1915.
The truces were not unique to the Christmas period and reflected a mood of "live and let live", where infantry close together would stop fighting and fraternise, engaging in conversation. In some sectors, there were occasional ceasefires to allow soldiers to go between the lines and recover wounded or dead comrades; in others, there was a tacit agreement not to shoot while men rested, exercised or worked in view of the enemy. The Christmas truces were particularly significant due to the number of men involved and the level of their participation—even in quiet sectors, dozens of men openly congregating in daylight was remarkable—and are often seen as a symbolic moment of peace and humanity amidst one of the most violent conflicts in human history.
-from Wikipedia's article; "Christmas truce"
"Having a gunfight on {a Holy night/timeframe} wouldn't be right." -Germany
Say what you will about "Hetalia", but this sequence was semi-based on real historical events - Real events that should be much more well known.

conceptually gereng is so funny to me; the inherent sexual tension of a crotchety english gentleman and a hunky german accountant passive-aggressively beefing over poolside deckchair territorial claims every summer

Brief Thoughts on Some Ships:
USUK: They're best friends who are obsessed with each other and always looking for excuses to hang out. They tend to info dump all over the other. They're stubborn, kind of petty, very protective, and have a hard time admitting how much they desire the other's company, praise, and attention, but they're working on it because they care deeply about the other. They're in love, your honour.
PrUK: One of the best slept on England ships. Two wild guys that go out to loud punk rock concerts and have drinks together, then quietly recharge at home (e.g. writing in their journals, reading fairy tales, and sewing). Fun personality combination? Check. History together? Check. Canon interactions? Check. Though they really could still use MORE canon moments, given how much potential they have. Pirate x priest with these two is always excellent.
EngBela: The sexy Addams Family-esque couple who live in an elegant gothic mansion and pass time indulging in their hobbies, such as fortune telling, talking to ghosts, singing, and listening to rock music.
FrUK: Used to be an OTP, now I mainly like them as close platonic frenemies. Romantically, it's better in theory than in practice – that is to say, it has potential, but I'm not a fan of most depictions. Also, nyo FrUK is superior.
AmeBela: The dorky hero and goth girl. They confused and exhausted each other at first, but eventually developed an understanding and started getting along pretty well. He can fix her. She can make him worse. Alfred tries to encourage Natalya to form her own identity away from Ivan. Natalya encourages Alfred's suppressed yandere tendencies. She pegs him.
Romerica: They bond over sharing their cultures with each other. Alfred loves Lovino's food. Living in America provided all sorts of new ingredients for Lovino to experiment with in cooking, and he got to be good at something without Feli taking the attention away from him. Lovino is actually a fan of some of Alfred's home cooking as well. They both enjoy singing and dancing, and are fans of Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, and Bobby Darin.
EngGer: They're both responsible and serious...until Arthur's wild side comes out and he starts teasing and playing games with Ludwig's head. Ludwig is socially awkward and a strict rule-follower, which Arthur can relate to, but he's better at being social and having fun than Ludwig, so he can help him loosen up – although in the bedroom, Arthur is more than happy with letting Ludwig be a strict rule follower. Ludwig is very obedient. Arthur trained him nicely.
AmeLiet: They're really domestic and get along well most of the time. They're comfortable enough that they can confide pretty easily in each other. Alfred is pretty protective of Tolys, particularly when it comes to Ivan. He doesn't like the way Ivan treated him and is quick to jump to his defence whenever possible. Additionally, Alfred is 'in love with the way Tolys undresses'. That's not questionable at all.

You know what we don't use enough? The fact Germany is afraid a ghost despite trying to claim he doesn't believe in them
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now I can't stop imagining Alfred dragging Arthur and Ludwig to a haunted house and Ludwig is like "Ghosts don't exist" and then like a mouse crosses their path or something and Ludwig thinking it's something paranormal freaks and jumps behind Arthur 🥰

I should probably state this now even though it's super early (because October fills up fast and this week has long been occuring in october and i don't want to change that). Gereng week will be taking place October 5th-12th. You can start sending prompts in if you so choose, but I will make an official post about prompt suggestions in a few months a little closer to the date. This is just to secure the date.
