hmmmmm been watching a lot of psychological horror movies recently, and a lot of them feature a character being haunted but not interacting with the dead? Like they're in the same room and the deceased says nothing.
I've been pondering Britannia showing up that way to Arthur, he's drunk one night, sitting in his study far later then he should and suddenly she's there just across from him. He never saw his mother, but there she is in front of him looking the same she was the moment she died. He's not even scared, but he doesn't believe its her even though he knows with every fiber of his being it is.
His mother was a warrior, that's all anyone ever said of her, his siblings had overly idealized notions of things she did. They were far older than him, they remembered her, he didn't believe the things they said about her were true. The woman sitting across from him doesn't look like a warrior, she looks worn and defeated, she's covered in sweat and blood, and there's tear tracks on her face.
And this little shit always preached her death necessary for his life, it was a trade off and she knew it before he was born. He was the death of her and he didn't care but she's here now, she's going to force him to care. He just watches her, he doesn't know how long they sit there but he wakes up in his bed the next morning. He doesn't know if she was real or not, but he saw her regardless

writing a scene that takes place in Late Antiquity of Arthur and Morgan burying their mother, and it's supposed to somber, right? it's a funeral scene. they just lost their mom, who before then had come back from death countless times. it's supposed to be sad and uncertain and unnerving.
however. it is somewhat difficult to achieve this tone when the funeral involves them casually dismembering the body so they can make combs and flutes from the skeleton. Arthur insists on having a tibia. they argue over who gets the skull. it's not supposed to be humorous but I have no idea how to make this serious.
I just wanted the scene to be historically and culturally accurate so this is my punishment ig.

Author’s Note: I got inspired after seeing this art by ashafox. It makes me think that maybe archery is a way Arthur tries to stay connected to his mom now that she’s gone because she was the one who first taught him and it’s one of the few memories he still has of her :’)
The wind caressed Arthur’s cheeks as he approached the target. Five feet farther than yesterday. Why he had gone so long without this he didn’t know, but he was nearly at his record distance now.
He drew an arrow from his quiver. The leather was worn and the strap was probably on its last leg, but it still worked just as fine as those shiny plastic ones of the current day. The leather was better actually. Carrying the scent of hyde and hills of grass. Grass from centuries ago. He lined the arrow in his bow, letting it rest gently on the top of his fist.
“Don’t squeeze or hold it,” his mother had warned, “It won’t go anywhere. Put your hand just below and let it rest–Yes like that. And use your pointer to make sure it lines up. Good.”
Arthur grabbed the other end between the knuckles of his middle and index finger. He drew back, inhaling through his nose. Nice and deep.
“Deep breath,” his mother whispered, “Raise your elbow love. Yes. Draw back to the cheek. No, don't look at your hand. Straight ahead. It’s only you and the target. Good. Now exhale and release.”
The arrow fizzed through the air, straight to the target’s glaring red center. Then he sent over another and another and another. The arrows splintered and cracked as they rammed into their friends impaling the fabric. He pawed for another one. Just one last shot and he’d be satisfied. But the quiver was empty.
Arthur’s knees knocked against each other, forcing him to the ground, him and his bow falling into the cradle of grass.
“You did good Arthur,” His mother’s voice echoed in his ear. Though she was long gone. Another arrow in the wind only to be splintered apart.

[Ancient Hetalia]
A little illustration series I made in February/March before my exam about the Antiquity.
Here we have Ancient Egypt, Mama Iberia/Hispania (Spain and Portugal's mom), Minoan Crete (Ancient Greece's mom), Ancient Greece, Britannia, Germania and Noricum (Austria's mom and Germania's sister)

I’m attached to the idea of Arthur being born post-Rome for migration/cultural reasons, but I’ve been thinking a lot about how that might have shaped him. I don’t think there’s much to add on the setting, most people are aware of England effectively being post-apocalyptic during late antiquity and the early middle ages. However, on top of that I think the memory of Rome imparted to him by others juxtaposed with that is really interesting. He’s not like his mother and siblings who lived directly in fear of Roman occupation and subjugation, but he’s effectively the villain in his bedtime stories. Even though he’s gone, the ghost of him remains in the British Isles family’s behaviors and experiences. Even after their mother’s death, they all hole up in mountains and monasteries to hide for ages until they get the courage to approach the sea again, finally believing there to be nothing beyond it to fear anymore.
And yet, Arthur walks around these abandoned baths and aqueducts and wonders how evil could he truly have been? He brought them these wonders from the Continent, surely there must have been a hint of kindness. Arthur’s naïveté obviously wears off and he trusts his mother’s words more, but I think that his musings linger. It’s his first lesson in empire, even if he doesn’t understand it yet: hide the imperial knife behind a cloak of benevolence, and one day their children will forget why they ever had cause to despise you. They may even aspire toward the ideal you put in place.

so anyway Germania and Scandia were best friends who got married bc of unhealthy codependency and a little thing called convenience. They had Denmark, Sweden, and Norway mostly bc enough people asked if they were going to have kids. They said why not? and had 3.
eventually they figured out at least some of the codependency stuff, and decided it'd be best to spend some time apart. (they decided they didn't want to be married anymore but didn't get divorced cause it sounded like too much work :\)
Germania meandered off, got v short term girlfriend Aestii and they had Prussia. Left that relationship without even knowing Prussia existed. Dated Noricum for awhile (terrible decision on both parts they were so bad for each other) and had Austria, who just kinda got left with mom.
Germania and Gaul then got forced to be around each other for months, thought what would one night hurt? and then she got pregnant with Holy Rome, then they got married for the express purpose of 'we're stuck with each other so why not'. (Second time in his life man would do that) they had HRE, Switzerland, Netherlands & Belgium. Gaul would pass away when Belgium was still very small (about 3)
years later he would have a bordering 1 night stand short thing with Britannia and that’s where England would come from and that’s one a v short summary of hws Germania’s relationships.

so for whatever reason I’m not a major fan of edgy Alfred (though I’ve seen times where it’s been done so well and it can be awesome), but edgy nyo America? yes. absolutely.
like I want her to knock my head clean off with that bat. I want her to be mean as fuck when she wants to be. I want her to send Ivan a ‘Wish you were here!’ card but over a picture of a nuclear detonation. I want her to be the very picture of elegance and poise but just seething angry under the surface. I want her to be entitled and manipulative and ambitious. I want her to be vicious. I want her to be more like Arthur’s mother than her own children are and just looking at her can make them a little homesick. I want her to be Arthur’s daughter more than he can stand sometimes.
