Check out a great, smart new book about #davidbowie — #davidbowieandromanticism — link in bio for details. This #boxset is the reissue of a promotional package for Bowie’s #1971 #album #hunkydory. It has seven songs from the album on one side of the vinyl while the other side is blank, because in the original promo package side two had songs from a different artist, Dana Gillespie. The promo package also contains a cardboard envelope with six Bowie photos from the period and a flyer, plus an added explanation of the boxset itself. #gem management company pressed the original promo, calling it #bowpromo. These were called rough mixes, so two versions of the songs are not the same as the ones on the officially released album. David Bowie - Hunky Dory LP When David Bowie passed into stardust he left a discography that is rich in innovation and truth within his art. Sure there are periods of Bowie that do not work for me. In this case, it is a true sign of an artist who was willing to push through, try new things but most important, be true to himself. He has a terrific book end of albums that suit my listening taste. He started and ended in a place I completely appreciate. The early music and his later music both resonate with me in a special way. Stepping in mid phase may have forced me to overlook it if not for many friends praising David Bowie over the years. Having said this, I am taking this opportunity to reach anyone who has not heard this particular album before. Released in 1971, you will hear radio hits, amazing musical compositions, earworms, open spaces, toe tappers and even a riff that is clearly used in a Metallica song. Yep. I said it. It's there. Arte y Alma— Art & Soul— are works arising from my lifelong engagement with the intersection of the Arts and Spirit, or ‘Soul’ (‘Soul’ referring to the imperishable: one’s pure heart essence or ‘life force’). The new series of portraits illuminate and celebrate those for whom creative expression, and the deepest place that this expression arises from, are inextricably linked. Arte y Alma posits the possibility of touching upon or tapping into the ineffable through the Arts, Martial Arts, Meditation, Dance, Poetry, and Music. I have always wanted to create a portrait of David Bowie: a personal favorite and considered the most influential musician of the 20th Century. There was no one like him: he was utterly original and unique in everything that he created. In addition to being a musician, dancer, visual artist, writer, and actor; Bowie was a true Seeker: his creative work was driven by an irresistible poetic inquiry. He shared many of my own interests: in Buddhism, Beat poetry, gnosticism, and mysticism, for example. He also leveraged his fame in the service of equality & human rights. For all these reasons, Bowie perfectly embodies the theme of my new series. The portrait is also part of a future traveling exhibition of the love & art & travels— & the teachers & teachings they were rooted in— of my late partner Anthony Hassett & I. Hunky Dory

When I first, truly, got into Bowie, Hunky Dory and The Rise And Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars were the first two albums I listened to. It took me a while to branch out, and for those few days, maybe weeks, it was just those two albums. Then I branched out, fell in love, and left Hunky Dory in the past. I didn't listen to it for a long time. A few times I tried, and I just couldn't find the passion again. Suddenly the genre wasn't for me anymore, it was too dated, not punchy enough. And then, Madison Square Garden happened. For David's 50th Birthday, he threw a big concert at MSG and had a plethora of special guests joining him to perform his songs. I watched the concert, and wow it was awesome. One of the special guests, was Robert Smith, lead singer of The Cure, and I subsequentially fell in love with them. It helped that they sang one of my favorite Bowie songs at the time, The Last Thing You Should Do. It was the same performance with Robert Smith, that helped me learn to love Hunky Dory again. Alongside the Earthling track, they also sang Quicksand, a piece that I always recognized was genius but never clicked until then. The same thing happened with the performance of Queen Bitch with Lou Reed, a track I previously thought was too rough and had no flow (boy was I wrong.) Hunky Dory places 14/23 on the holy (holy) tier list. Did I say 25 last time? My counting abilities appear to be failing me. I think that this spot is probably either just right or totally wrong. Just looking at it now, I don't see how I thought Aladdin Sane and The Man Who Sold The World were beneath this, but maybe I'll prove myself right. Let's do this.
