Navigating This Blog:
Firstly, please remember that my tagging system is for my use. I'm very happy when my blogs help people find stuff! But their first function is to help me find stuff. <3 1. If you’re looking for a specific race, the tag format is [location] [year]. For example, #hungary 2016 or #usa 2019. -> Azerbaijan is listed as Baku. -> Countries with multiple races will be tagged as both the country and track (for example, Spain and Valencia/Jerez/Barcelona, Germany and Hockenheim/Nurburg). -> European GP content is tagged as both European and the name of the track, either Valencia or Baku. -> Where possible, days are also tagged. So, for example, #monaco 2019 thursday. 2. If you’re looking for just a specific year, the format is either #flashback fic ref [year] or #fic ref [year]. #flashback fic ref is any year before 2021. #fic ref is for 2021 onward. 3. If you’re looking for just a specific track, that’s tagged too! Just search the country. 4. On a quest for other racing-related content but not from F1 race weekends, you say? -> Pre-season and post-season tags! For example, #pre-season 2012 or #post-season 2009. -> Testing, specifically, is also tagged! The format is testing [year], like #testing 2018. -> Race of Champions? Goes by year, and is listed under both “roc” and “race of champions”. For example, #roc 2008 or #race of champions 2011. 5. Things he does in his capacity as an F1 driver, but not strictly racing-related? -> The FIA gala is listed under both “fia gala” and “fia prize giving”. Examples: #fia gala 2018 or #fia prize giving 2011. -> Autosport Awards / Laureus World Sports Awards / German Sportspersonality of the Year -> Charity soccer games: Partita del Cuore / Kick Fur Kinder / Champions For Charity 6. And, of course, non-racing-related content: -> The format is [year] not a race. For example, #2007 not a race. -> If you’d like a specific time period during a season, it’s separated by what races it fell between. For example, #between japan and usa 2018. -> Summer break 2022! 7. Feeder series! -> Formula BMW ADAC (all) / Formula BMW ADAC 2003 / Formula BMW ADAC 2004 -> Formula 3 (all) / Formula 3 2005 / Formula 3 2006 -> Formula Renault 3.5 8. All under-18 content is tagged as #childhood photos. 9. Relationships (not taking requests to add to this): -> Sewis -> Smick / With Mick (underage) -> George Russell -> Michael Schumacher 10. Important! On the website version of Tumblr, you can combine search items. This is immensely helpful for finding specific things! -> So, for example, if you open search and type in "hungary 2022, smick" it’ll only pull up Smick content from the Hungarian GP. :) -> Or “flashback fic ref 2011, autosport awards” -> Or “testing 2013, jerez” 11. Trigger tags I commonly use: * These are either for my use or by request and are not up for discussion or debate. If you need something added, please drop me a dm or ask to let me know. 💚 -> #tw max (verstappen) -> #tw transphobe (webber) -> #tw nico (rosberg) -> #tw kimi (raikkonen) -> #tw bernie ecclestone -> #tw helmut marko -> #tw christian horner -> #tw dietrich mateschitz -> #tw crash -> #tw death -> #tw body perception -> #tw food / #cw food This is a pretty exhaustive list, but if you need help or are confused, feel free to contact me! <3

hey gp! love your thoughtful reviews. i've been working my way through your recs and was wondering if you have any updates to your list at post/74663113337? i'm especially intrigued by your mention of performers you had to take out, but was also wondering if you have any more recent faves? thanks so much!
I think I made a similar post updating my recommended videos from that post, but you know what, I can make another! (Though given it’s been six years, I’ve completely forgotten who were the “less common faves” I took out, ha.)
All of these are videos (maybe one day I’ll make a separate post adding audios, but videos are easier right now). Some are old faves, others are newer. Some have links to them in my masterpost, but even the ones that don’t are pretty common, and if they’re not, I’ll note it. Even then, there are streams of Phantom-y bootlegs basically every week and almost all of these videos have been featured there, so even if you can’t find or trade for these, you still have opportunities to view them! Now, onto the videos themselves...
London
March 2019, Thaxton/Mathieson/Taylor: Probably the best video to come out of London in almost a decade, so it gives a great look at the London production as it is now. It also has a fantastic cast: David Thaxton is a very solid Phantom while Kelly Mathieson’s Christine is an absolute standout.
Broadway/National Tour
March 2, 2005, Panaro/Hanson/Cudia (Bway): Breaking the previous rule on not putting in Hugh Panaro, as when that post was made he had not even left. But he’s been gone a while and is getting less mentioned. However, I also put this in for Julie Hanson and John Cudia. This is a video to watch if you want to see a great trio of actors whose interpretations fit together almost perfectly - Panaro providing the slightly nutty Phantom, Hanson a traumatized, child-like Christine, and Cudia her protective guardian.
August 8, 2008, Crivello/Holden/Ragone (Las Vegas): I did not recommend any Vegas videos in the previous post, possibly because neither of the videos available at the time were that great, but now we have this! Absolutely the best video of the Vegas production, a must-see for the little tweaks they did not, not just to the script to shorten it to one act, but to the effects.
February 19, 2014, Grodin/Udine/Jacoby (National Tour): The restaged tour is gone and unlikely to come back, at least for now, so why not watch a video of what it was like? After seeing all the replicas, it makes for a fun time to see all the changes they made and compare it to the original. Plus, watching Grodin’s Phantom makes for a good roast. (You can also watch a video with almost the same cast save for Grace Morgan as Christine; she and Julia Udine are both good, but this one is slightly better filmed IMO.)
September 2018, Crawford/Ewoldt/Johnson (Bway): Probably the best of the recent Broadway videos, gives you a nice sense of what the Broadway production is like right now. Crawford is also the current Broadway Phantom, so you can see what his interpretation is, and Ali Ewoldt is fantastic, plus the first Asian-American Christine on Broadway.
International
Mexico, 2000, Vasconcelos/Terrazas/Joel: Breaking another rule... this video replaces the January 14, 2001 Mexico video, because this one blows it out of the water. Full show, professionally shot for cast and crew, featuring the principal cast all the way, and it is incredible. Saulo Vasconcelos’s Phantom needs to be seen, he does things no other Phantom has ever done. The only downside is that this video is kind of rare, but it gets streamed VERY frequently.
Hungary, 2003, Miller/Kiraly/Hommonay: I’m trying to add more non-replicas to the list, as there’s a real lack of footage and therefore attention given to them. So I’m putting in this one, even though it’s fairly old and also, I believe, from a dress rehearsal, so the actors are a little more laid-back than they would be. But it is the full show and gets you a decent look at it, and Zoltan Miller is probably my favorite of the Hungarian Phantoms, even though he noticeably lowers a lot of the score.
Russia, March 7, 2015, Ermak/Kotova/Zaycev: The Russian production had not even opened when I wrote that post, but I have to recommend something from it, as it was genuinely one of the best productions I’ve seen in recent years: enthusiastic cast, tons of photos, lots of attention from fans, and several great bootlegs. This video is not just one of the best of the production itself, it’s probably one of the best Phantom bootlegs period - great filming with tons of closeups, almost no obstruction, basically the full show, and a terrific cast. It used to be really rare but it’s getting pretty common now.
Denmark, March 2019, Kofod/Glosted/Lund: The Danish productions have always received raves from those who have seen it, but with such a lack of video footage, it never got much attention. That all changed with this boot, and let me tell you, the production deserved it. This has one of the best trios I’ve ever seen, and one of the most vibrant casts in general, where it feels like thought and detail was put into every line, every bit of blocking. Add to the fact that the video itself is great, and you have a highly recommended bootleg.
World Tour, May 23, 2019, Roxmouth/Picerno/Leisy: The only production currently running right now, but I’m also recommending this because it, and Roxmouth’s Phantom, have received massive amounts of attention. (That, and Picerno’s Christine is the current principal on Broadway, so you can have a look at her too.) This video is terrific quality and of the full show, however it does suffer from pretty bad framerate drops, so if you have a tendency to get motion-sick, you might want to refrain from seeing this. But if not, definitely check this video out.

How F1 would have dealt with no cars on the grid
Tumblr media Tumblr media
On the rapidly drying Hungaroring track, world champion and pole position man Lewis Hamilton was the only driver who elected not to dive into the pits to change from intermediates to slicks. His Mercedes team had been worried that, with the team having the first box in the pitlane, coming in to swap tyres would have left Hamilton trapped after the tyre change and unable to get back out until the whole field had gone through. While he would have regained some spots as others ahead of him would subsequently have had to wait, the fear was that he would still be dropped well into the midfield pack. It's why the team took the gamble on sticking with the inters. So as Hamilton was told to carry on and everyone else came in, it meant the Briton formed up completely alone on the starting grid. Once he was stationary and the medical car was in place at the back of the grid, then the lights procedure went ahead as normal – and he was unleashed for an unchallenged run down to Turn 1.
Read Also:
Hamilton's single car start was the sparsest grid start F1 has witnessed since the infamous United States Grand Prix in 2005 when all the Michelin runners pulled out and only six Bridgestone-shod cars took the lights. But one of the most intriguing aspects about Hamilton's start was that it was not inconceivable that the Mercedes driver could have pitted as well, meaning that no cars formed up the grid. It's a scenario that has never happened in grand prix racing before, but F1 race director Michael Masi said that he was clear in his head about what would have occurred in the event that the FIA had to deal with a zero car grid. "Once the last car was in pitlane, the start signal would have been initiated," he explained. "Then once that went off, the green light at pit exit would have come on and it would have been the order from pitlane exit." In terms of the spectacle at home, the normal starting procedure would still take place, so the five red lights would still go through their regular sequence before going out even though there was nobody there to react to them. Masi added: "Christian would have activated the start lights, as per normal once the last car was in pitlane. "The start lights would have been activated, five red lights, red lights go out, once the red lights have gone out the pit exit would have opened. "It would be irrespective , because effectively the race from our side, or the resumption, hasn't recommenced until that point." While the unique Hungarian GP start will secure a place in F1's history books, Masi says that the lessons from it could prompt a more formal tweaking of the F1 sporting regulations to cover off the circumstances of a no-car start. "It's something no one could ever have really foreseen, but we'll let things calm down and have a chat about it in the light of day with all of the sporting directors," he said. "But having spoken to some of them already up and down some of them have already said, 'was it really a bad thing?...'" shares comments Read the full article

This morning, it was confirmed that Roy Nissany will be making his FP1 debut at this weekend's Spanish GP, with Williams. The 25 year-old will replace George Russell in the car, having been Williams' official test driver back in January. - "Driving an FP1 for the first time is a huge milestone for every driver, yet for me, it is also a national achievement to be carrying the Israeli flag," said Nissany, via Autosport. - "I have thoroughly been preparing for it with the team and I believe we can get great value out of it," he continued. - Nissany returned to the F2 grid, for 2020, although so far things have not quite panned out in the ideal way. The Israeli driver scoring a point on the opening weekend of the season, but has taken nothing since then. - Dave Robson, head of vehicle performance at Williams, added that he believes Nissany will "immediately" be on the pace and will be an asset to the team's test programme. - "Roy Nissany will drive George's car during FP1 at this event. We spent time with Roy in Abu Dhabi at the end of last year and we know that he will immediately be up to speed and contributing to the important test plan on Friday," said Robson. - "We continue to push the FW43 hard and this return to Barcelona is an opportunity to explore again the higher downforce set-ups at a circuit that we know well," he continued. - Nissany's father, Chanoch Nissany, made history back at 2005's Hungarian GP, when he drove in practice for Minardi. - That day, on his birthday, the older Nissany became the first Israeli driver to compete in an official F1 session. Unfortunately, he ended up a huge 12.9 seconds off the pace and 6.9 seconds behind his team-mate. - With that being said, @fastf1 is absolutely certain that Roy will handle things better than that. What do you make of Williams handing an opportunity to Roy Nissany? 🤔 🏁🏁 | CREDITS: MOTORSPORT IMAGES | #F1 #FormulaOne #F12020 #F1News #F1Pics #F1Memes #F1History #ClassicF1 #RoadToF1 #Formula2 #WilliamsRacing #RoyNissany #GR63 #NL6 #TeamLH #LH44 #MV33 #HondaF1 #CL16 #KR7 #DR3 #AlfaRomeoRacing #EO31 #SV5 #RenaultF1Team #RG8 #LN4 #AA23 #MichaelSchumacher #KeepFightingMichael https://www.instagram.com/p/CDvttLNhNgM/?igshid=2zmkt63wt2rv

Hungarian GP: Lewis Hamilton aims to return to winning ways after Germany carnage
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Of the current F1 drivers, Lewis Hamilton has won in Hungary six times, Sebastian Vettel has won twice, with one win apiece for both Daniel Ricciardo and Kimi Raikkonen
It was the race that had it all – spins, crashes, crazy weather and incredible results as Sunday’s German Grand Prix thrilled, amazed and excited us.
That is now three epic races we have had in a row – Austria, Great Britain and Germany – so can Formula 1’s resurgence carry on this weekend for the 12th race of the season in Hungary?
It is the last race before F1’s four-week summer break and Lewis Hamilton, ninth at Hockenheim, holds a 41-point advantage over Mercedes team-mate Valtteri Bottas, one of seven drivers to not finish in Germany.
Red Bull’s Max Verstappen took his second win of 2019 with Mercedes suffering their worst weekend of the season.
But the Silver Arrows will feel comforted by the fact Hamilton has won six times at the Hungaroring, including four successes in the past seven years, to be the most successful driver there with two more wins than the four Michael Schumacher managed.
The Hungaroring, just over 10 miles north-east of the centre of Budapest, first held a grand prix in 1986 and was the first race to be held behind the Iron Curtain. Then F1 chief Bernie Ecclestone wanted to stage a race in Russia but was convinced to go to Hungary instead and it has been part of the calendar every year since, and has a deal to stage races until at least 2026.
Lewis Hamilton has won six times in Hungary – 2018, 2016 (pictured), 2013, 2012, 2009 and 2007
Hamilton won by 17 seconds last year with the Ferraris of Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen coming second and third respectively, while Verstappen’s race ended on lap five with a loss of power and Charles Leclerc, then of Sauber, failed to complete a lap because of a suspension issue.
The 20 drivers will race 70 laps of the 4.381km 14-turn circuit and the weather forecast suggests showers for the opening two practice sessions on Friday, but, sadly, it is not expected to be a wet race like the one that caused so much chaos in Germany.
Pit stops proved crucial last weekend with Verstappen stopping five times on his way to victory and the tactical strategy is often vital in Hungary.
Last year Ferrari did not do two-time Hungary winner Vettel any favours as they delayed and then botched a pit stop which inadvertently left him behind Bottas, who repeatedly blocked off and delayed the German as Hamilton disappeared into the distance.
Bottas did such a good job at holding up Vettel that Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff later called the Finn a “sensational wingman”, something the driver took exception to, saying the description “hurt”.
This race has been good for Bottas’ Finnish compatriots over the years as Mika Hakkinen won in 1999 and 2000, Raikkonen took the chequered flag in 2005 and Heikki Kovalainen clinched the only grand prix success of his career in Hungary 11 years ago.
The championship and Bottas himself, who still does not know if he will be driving with Mercedes in 2020, could really do with another victory for Finland on Sunday and moving from Hungary wingman to Hungary winner.
The track
Social media
After Sunday’s race in Germany, world champion and 2019 title leader Lewis Hamilton said he expected Mercedes to “come back stronger” in Hungary
Hamilton’s Mercedes’ team-mate Valtteri Bottas was also trying to not dwell on what happened at Hockenheim
Sergio Perez was another vowing to put things right in Hungary after he was the first man to crash out in the carnage in Germany
But Williams were in a much more upbeat mood after 30-second post-race penalties for the Alfa Romeos of Kimi Raikkonen and Antonio Giovinazzi promoted Robert Kubica up to 10th – the team’s first point of the season

SURPRISING HUNGARY
And away we go. Our version of The Amazing Race: Heading towards Hungary, we set out early and stop at the Wieliczka Salt Mines. What a place. Huge caverns with many statues and scenes carved from the rock salt. Full ballroom like cavern with giant chandeliers made from rock salt and biblical sciences decorating the walls. A bigger than life statue of the Polish Pope, John Paul. That is amazing. We walked down 400 steps to get down to the first level, then another 400 to go down to the second and third levels. (I’’ll have you know that we have walked 300+ km on this trip!).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Once out of the salt mines we fell upon a little restaurant- which we called a chicken restaurant because it had a big picture of a chicken. There we ordered a huge lunch - stewed pears with goat cheese as an appetizer, potato pancakes (crispy and delic) with goulash (The goulash here is mainly meat and gravy, with a very few carrots sprinkled in) as the main, and of course, bread with homemade lard (bacon lard with herbs, which you spread on bread and salt heavily) and then dessert...crispy bits (like pieces of donut fried) with honey to dip, cheesecake made with cottage cheese, very common here. STrudel for the man.
In order to get to Hungary we had to drive through Slovakia. Another vignette (highway pass) needed. We drove through mountainous territory and saw that hunting was a big thing here. They seem to have larger animals - at least that’s what the signs say. There were hotels advertising as hunting lodges. We stayed at a pension, right off the highway. $45 Canadian Very cute, but highway noise all night. The man and i went for dessert— cheese filled crepes with hot raspberries and sweet cream. The cream is fresh whipped cream with very little sugar. The cheese is cottage cheese finely ground and somewhat sweet. All designed to make you drool. Breakfast - bacon laid out in a square, 3 eggs fried on top. Like a basket. Very good.
And so we arrive in Budapest. We had to stop at the airport car rental first and our little GPS app first took us to the back side of the airport where we encountered the police on patrol. We saw some interesting country anyway. Forests are all planted in rows. Miles of this. We arrived in Budapest really not knowing what to expect and driving into the downtown tourist section was not very auspicious. But once we came to the old city we were blown away. We found a parking space, luckily and had lunch at a Greek restaurant which hosted the most beautiful bathroom we’ve seen thus far. Pictures to follow. And the meal— so good and so good looking too!
Budapest is built along the Danube and we stayed on the Pest side of the city. This is a city of bridges and there are multiple beautiful bridges, the Chain Bridge the most beautiful but the liberty Bridge a close second. The streets are lined with buildings built during the Austria-Hungarian era with the 18 and 19 century buildings. That is my favourite architectural style. We snorted around and found our rental. It was on Kacinsky Street. In the Jewish section of the city and on a street of hostels, filled with kids and food trucks. And bars. Ruin bars, down a flight of stairs into cave-like bars. Bestie and her man had to listen to the partying all night long. Our rental is a clean, two bedroom apartment with a tiny kitchen but a big dining room and living room. There’s a washing machine and a drying rack. I could have brought 2 outfits as we have usually had a washing machine on this trip. We walked to the river and revelled in the beauty of the city. Jumped on the Hop ON Hop Off Boat and floated down the river as night fell. We sure didn’t know this was the most beautiful city we would see on our travels this time. (So far). After the little cruise we took the night tour of the city. Very impressive and gave us an idea of what we wanted to see the next day. Walked home down streets hopping with life. How can there be so many people out on a Monday night? We did eventually figure that there were a lot of people in the city because of Easter holidays coming up. Friday is Good Friday for the Catholics. We learned that we can’t visit the Parliament buildings BECAUSE ALL THE TOURS ARE BOOKED. We. could have seen it on Wednesday, but we will be in Romania by then! We can’t believe how many of the tours are full.
Tuesday is Tour Day! Hopped on that bus again and drove through the city to look at those beautiful buildings, and Hopped off at the Matthias Church. It is across the river in Buda. Marvelled at it. The roofs are tiled with brightly patterned tiles. The church is amazing, amazing, amazing. Then off to the Central Market where Bestie said that it was only a fresh food market, selling giant green onions and radishes, vegetables of all sorts and fresh meat in abundance. It apparently is for the locals to buy their groceries. We had expected that it would have much more than that, but no. I didn’t even look because the Man and I had to run across the Liberty Bridge to Gellert Spa where we had booked a visit to the thermal baths and I had a very pricey but very good massage. Budapest is known for their thermal baths, so we figured that it would be a good thing to do. The bath is amazingly beautiful. But the baths themselves are really not warm enough for us. The spa in Kananaskis is better! This is like an old Victorian Queen. Stunningly beautiful at one time but fraying at the edges now. Incredible stained glass. Tiles everywhere. Fantastical patterns. Must have been a thing.
We went out for Hungarian food...chicken paprikash for sure. Served with dumplings, that I would have called spatzle. I thought it would have been spicier. Maybe it just depends upon who is making it. Wine was good. Actually, all the wine has been pretty good. So has the beer. The Man tries the beer, I try the wine! Every once in awhile Bestie tries a beer! After dinner Bestie and I head over to The New York Cafe, supposedly the most beautiful cafe in the world for dessert. The men went home. Bestie and I had been for massages, our hair was wrecked, we were exhausted, but we had to see that cafe. We walked over and went in for decaf coffee and dessert. What a revelation. It is as highly decorated as anything we’ve seen. Rococo would be the style I would think. Glittering with gold leaf and crystal. Every corner elaborate. After dessert the maître de took our picture in front of a gorgeous breakfast room and encouraged us to walk about. He also gave us postcards. How nice was that? We did not look like girls dressed up for a night out. He was lovely. $25 apiece for coffee and dessert. Not too bad,but not too good!
Morning arrived and we drove over to see the Shoes along the Danube memorial that marks the spot where shortly before the Allies came into Budapest to liberate the ghetto the Hungarians lined up a number of Jews along the river, told them to strip, then shot them so that they fell into the river and floated away. Such cruelty.
From Wikipedia”: "The composition titled 'Shoes on the Danube Bank' gives remembrance to the 3,500 people, 800 of them Jews, who were shot into the Danube during the time of the Arrow Cross terror.[2] The sculptor created sixty pairs of period-appropriate shoes out of iron. The shoes are attached to the stone embankment, and behind them lies a 40 meter long, 70 cm high stone bench. At three points are cast iron signs, with the following text in Hungarian, English, and Hebrew: "To the memory of the victims shot into the Danube by Arrow Cross militiamen in 1944–45. Erected 16 April 2005."[3] Most of the murders along the edge of the River Danube took place around December 1944 and January 1945, when the members of the Arrow Cross Party police ("Nyilas") took as many as 20,000 Jews from the newly established Budapest ghetto and executed them along the river bank. In February 1945, the Soviet forces liberated Budapest.
They knew the allies were coming. Hungary is ambivalent about their role in the Jewish genocide. The tour bus points out the ghetto where they said 70,000 Jews survived the war. No mention thought of the 430,000 Hungarian Jews who were deported to Auschwitz. There is no mention of the Shoes along the Danube memorial. There are however a large number of Jews living in Budapest. Sweep it under the rug
