I'm a bit late but a BIG Happy Birthday to @mrghostrat! Thank you for everything you do for the fandom. Your work, both written and painted, has been a huge inspiration for me to get back into my own craft as a way to manage the brainrot hahah.
I wanted to illustrate something from Bilv's fics and decided to go for "A Place Like This"! Go give your kudos over here, it's a LOVELY story:

Good Omens Fic Rec: Similarly Occupied
Crowley wakes from his nineteenth-century nap to find Aziraphale in a less-than-discreet Gentleman's Club.
Length: 8,888 words
AO3 Rating: Explicit / Spice Level 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Best for: After Dark
Triggers: None
Read it here, fic by Zin_Lynn
*Minor Spoilers* This is a rather lovely story of Crowley and Aziraphale running into each other at the Hundred Guineas Club. Aziraphale wants a quick escape from a couple of his dance partners who have more than dancing on their mind. To make them understand, he's not interested. So he does what any sensible person would do and kisses Crowley! Which will soon spiral out of control and end up with them doing a little dancing of their own.
There's an exchange here that I'm crazy about, and demonstrates why I love bossy Aziraphale. "Angels aren't supposed to want," he will say, and Crowley's answer of, "Tell me what to do, then". Made me shiver. He can't ask for what he wants, his conditioning from Heaven preventing him from being vulnerable in that way. But he can command. And commanding his lover to put him on his knees? Oh that's beautiful.
After dark read of course. I love this little window into the past, I wonder what happened to this iteration next, do they continue down their canon path or will everything change for them? I don't know, but there's something magical about daydreaming about fanfiction

It was such fun to participate in the @gospexchange with the prompt from my giftee, @kotias: Bloody Mary by Lady Gaga. And now I have this image lingering in my head, of Crowley doing the iconic Wednesday Addams dance. It's a pretty small leap:
Tumblr media
Have any artists drawn this yet? I'd LOVE to see! I can just picture David Tennant as Crowley doing his own version of the dance: 🔥
Tumblr media
The song inspired The Ineffable Dance, my new fic about what happens after Crowley drives away at the end of season 2. With many thanks to my beta, @andromeda4004, come read about Crowley exorcising his demons (or angels!) at a dance club, and traveling through time to where his angel is waiting at a club of his own... (reblogs are appreciated, even if you don't have time to read right now!)
He saunters up to the door and miracles his way inside, carried forward on the swell of the music.
Love is just a history that they may prove
As he crosses the threshold, his senses are flooded with sounds, scents, and sights. He blinks and breathes - one, two, three times - and feels himself adjust to the whirlwind press of the crowded dance club. Aziraphale would hate this, but then again, he isn't here, he isn't anywhere Crowley can reach. He firmly pushes that thought away.
And when you're gone I'll tell them my religion's you
He visits the bar and downs a fortifying glass of their best whiskey, savoring the heat of it in his mouth and then down his throat, giving his body something to feel that isn't crushing weight or other distressing things. He takes that feeling with him, this small part of the night that Aziraphale would appreciate - delicious, buzzing warmth - as he steps onto the dance floor.
I'm gonna dance, dance, dance With my hands, hands, hands above my head
The beat of the music is more compulsion than invitation, but he welcomes it into his body, percussive thrusts joining the heat of the whiskey and driving everything else away.
I won't cry for you I won't crucify the things you do
He dances.
I won't cry for you See, when you're gone, I'll still be Bloody Crowley
His heart skips a beat, and he blinks, hard. For a moment he thought the line was "I'll still be Bloody Crowley," but that doesn't make sense. It was definitely "Mary". Right? His heart skips again as Aziraphale's voice echoes in his thoughts: "You're being silly!"
Tumblr media
Keep reading here to see what happens after Crowley discovers Aziraphale also dancing... in the past! 2.5k words, rated T, sweet and hopeful with no major warnings.

look i love my asexual headcanons to death and what i’m about to say in no way discounts said asexual headcanons. with that disclosed i do not think aziraphale is a “virgin” (<- virginity isn’t real but you get my point) take one look at that angel and tell me he didn’t go to bacchanals i mean come the fuck on
#marzi speaks#i have no opinion nor do i care about whether people think crowley fucks. i think it’s funny if he doesn’t but i could see it either way#but aziraphale? while i don’t think it’s his favorite thing in the world you cannot tell me he never dabbled#bacchanals (and dionysian raves before that) seem right up his alley#plus there’s the fucking. ‘discreet gentlemen’s club’ (THE FUCKING HUNDRED GUINEAS CLUB??? SIR.)#and this guy lives in soho!!!! i mean truly#i don’t think he really seeks sex out or anything#i mean there’s those diary entries where he turns down the woman who essentially flashes him (and i believe a man later?)#so like he’s clearly not someone who really wants sex that much#but there’s no way in hell he never tried it at least once. he’s wayyyy too curious for that#i have a feeling he really stopped ‘trying it out’ after 1941 though. i feel like after he realizes just how deeply he feels for crowley#he’d like. feel Extra Weird about having sex with anyone else#especially bc he isn’t attracted to humans (perhaps beyond like aesthetic attraction)#but he’s definitely dabbled#crowley? could go either way. on one hand: demon. temptations. et cetera#on the other: he’s far less cool than he acts and while having sex isn’t necessarily cool it feels like smth he’d lie about to seem cooler#plus i doubt he’d ever really have any proper interest in humans. probably even less so than aziraphale#see this still coincides with the asexual headcanons. it’s chill 👍

i’m so totally normal about the fact that aziraphale’s last (known) deliberate foray into the queer community was when he learned the gavotte at the fictionalized hundred guineas club (!!!) in the 1800s and now in the 2020s he’s like “grindr? what’s that?”
many are talking about his repression which is very valid… and yet the thing to me that stands out about aziraphale is that he’s actually… incredibly stable in his identity and that identity IS incredibly queer. queer by the standards of heaven AND by human standards as well
metatron describes his “de facto partnership” with crowley as “irregular.” and in fact aziraphale in his entirety is irregular. he likes and makes it his business not only to understand but to be a connoisseur of all manner of things angels aren’t supposed to even remotely care about. food. music. books. theatre. sleight of hand. and more.
it’s the sort of behavior that would’ve gotten him othered, treated as a bit odd, in heaven even if he hadn’t chosen to consort all across the earth with a literal demon. and it IS treated that way - the fact is aziraphale even as an angel has got proclivities that set him apart from the rest of the host (even after offering him the highest position in heaven, metatron still acts deeply dismissive of him… like aziraphale’s bookshop is merely a quaint little hobby of his that can be easily transferred to another custodian, and not a literal extension of who aziraphale has become, full of his tartan and unique bibles and special vintages of wine and the books arranged in a very specific way)
so. aziraphale is a queer angel but of course he’s also queer to other humans. but in such a way that… he had his realization a LONG time ago, and put the matter very much to rest after that. aziraphale is perpetually something like several centuries behind schedule. he owns an ancient computer that probably continues to run windows 98 simply because aziraphale’s decided it should. he wears the same waistcoat and coat for generations because he simply likes them precisely the way they are and sees no reason to change them. but the idea that he doesn’t know how he comes across to others - of course he does. he knows he looks like your prim and proper grandfather and he prefers it that way
aziraphale looked around at humans in the 1880s and said: ah yes. this is where i fit. and promptly ensconced himself in that queer subculture. learned the gavotte. read his austen. loved crowley from afar. aziraphale is fiercely and vibrantly queer. just with the sort of assurance of someone who lives with his lover in a commonlaw marriage for decades and then shows up at city hall for the certificate once society decides it’s ‘allowed.’ like… he hasn’t had any need to know what grindr is because aziraphale’s ‘scene’ was a century and a half ago and it defined romance for him too.
but my favorite thing about aziraphale is how much of him is about appearances versus the truth. he can lie straight to angels’ faces and sleep at night. he knows he comes off soft but he once wielded a flaming sword. he dissembles helplessness but he’s far from it and he knows precisely how it makes others treat him. and at the core of aziraphale is rigidity, inflexibility of ideas… his sense of self is stable where crowley’s is malleable, and so on, and so on
and the fact that he’s continuously fixated on trying to misguidedly do the right thing, the fact that he seeks heavenly approval and wants to fit the world into his schema of good vs evil… in no way do i think that means he isn’t one hundred percent aware of how he feels about crowley or what it means about him by angelic or human standards. i’ve seen some folks saying that aziraphale doesn’t want to like kissing crowley and like… as much as i love me some brideshead revisited/atonement flavored angst; i put forth that it’s not internalized homophobia or queer panic but simply: “i’m trying to do the right thing for both of us and you won’t let me.” and “i wanted our first kiss to be different.” he was envisioning an entirely different flavor of romance than what he got but he emma woodhoused too close to the sun
like, y’all. aziraphale in all likelihood has a glorious collection of historical queer erotica. he just has a feathery diva coat hanging in his closet, and for what. “oh, good lord” he says at crowley’s revolutionary outfit in the bastille, while eyeing him up like an entire meal. he’s so good at affected propriety, at carefully constructed stuffiness, but between the two of them aziraphale’s got to be the one who has experience
aziraphale had been physically throwing himself at crowley the entire season. he orchestrated an entire regency ball so they could touch hand to hand. he spends the entire season (well, and season 1) looking at crowley like he’s particularly coveted. he looked at crowley before the fall like he was glorious and beautiful. aziraphale’s queer and he knows it and i think that isn’t his problem, it’s the fact that he wants to build a different sort of future for the two of them but crowley’s gone and thrown a wrench in it by reminding him of everything he can finally have. like. that’s the heartbreak. it’s how dare you make this ugly? i forgive you for our first kiss being all pain and salt. it’s my dearest, i wanted to make heaven as beautiful as you deserve. as sacred and safe for us as our bookshop. and i can do that for us, because once i held a flaming sword and i still remember how the hilt felt in my hands. and now the taste of you is in my mouth.

Aziraphale's Ring Is a Queer Symbol
In a previous post I hold forth about the symbolism of the lion rampant on the escutcheon of Aziraphale's signet ring. The upshot is that the golden lion is used by Heaven as a symbol of its threat and its merciless, murderous corporate culture, and I argue that in S3 Aziraphale must subvert this stamp of Heavenly ownership and symbolically redefine the golden lion by summoning the courage to be soft.
Tumblr media
Now I've learned some new stuff about how signet rings are worn. Come, sistren, and get nerdy with me.
Aziraphale's ring is one of several we see angels wearing in Good Omens. Here in an indispensably useful post, @indigovigilance lists the known rings of Show Omens angels and those rings' qualities and placement. Note how of the angels who have rings, everyone except Saraqael and Aziraphale wear their rings on their LEFT pinky fingers. There's a reason for this.
Since the medieval period in Britain and Germany, and from there in the U.S., signet rings have been bestowed by professional associations as a sign of membership, particularly at the upper end of society: trade guilds, colleges, hospitals, the Church(es), noble families, and societies like the Freemasons all issue(d) signet rings to some of their members. The traditional placement for signet rings of show professional affiliation is the left pinky finger.
In fact, as it was not socially acceptable in or past the Victorian era for men to wear rings on more than one finger, men who wore signet rings and wedding rings both would have their wedding rings sized to fit the pinky finger below the signet. If a ring had to be moved to preserve masculinity, it wasn't the pinky ring that was going anywhere. Family signets can be worn on any of a number of fingers, but since the Victorian period the men of the British Royal Family (who are from Germany) have been especial sticklers about wearing their signets on their left pinky fingers as well.
So. If you're British and you have a signet ring that's meant to indicate professional affiliation, you wear it on your left pinky.
But Aziraphale wears his signet ring on his RIGHT hand.
Before I offer my opinion on what that means, here's some more fun background on the history and significance of pinky rings in Anglo-American culture:
The Victorian period was when pinky rings started to become associated with queerness.
Tumblr media
As fellow members of the Hundred Guineas Club, Oscar Wilde and Aziraphale would likely have been acquaintances.
Tumblr media
According to Wikipedia (ibid.):
"During the Victorian era, both single men and women uninterested in pursuing marriage could wear a ring on the little finger of their left hand."
This quickly expanded to a pinky ring on either hand. Here's Wikipedia's picture of farmer and philanthropist Caroline Rose Foster in 1917, the Edwardian era, wearing a pinky ring on her right hand:
Tumblr media
Do you smell a euphemism in "uninterested in pursuing marriage"? I do!
By midcentury--so only 30 years after Ms Foster up there--American and British queers, both men and women, were using signet pinky rings specifically to signal queerness to each other.
"For gay men in the 1950’s and 60’s, a way of signaling to others was through the wearing of a signet ring on the pinkie finger."
"During the 1950’s and 60’s signet rings were worn to signify membership of the gay community; both lesbians and homosexual men wore such rings."
The pinky rings @indigovigilance points out Maggie wears may mean she's an angel; they also match her midcentury lesbian style. Devious of the costumers to give her pinky rings on both hands rather than commit to one or the other.
Tumblr media
Screenshot by @indigovigilance
To review, there are three reasons a person in Anglo-American culture might wear a pinky ring:
They just feel like it--This can be any kind of ring and can be worn on either hand or both
Professional affiliation--This is a signet ring worn on the left pinky finger
To signal queerness--This is a signet ring and can be worn on either pinky finger
Aziraphale has worn a signet ring on his RIGHT pinky finger at least since he repaired the Eastern "Gate" in the Wall of Eden, so I'm not suggesting that he adopted the 20th-century pinky signet trend to signal his queerness (although as a clockably 'gay' 'man,' Soho fixture, and member of the Hundred Guineas Club, he may well have started it). What I am suggesting is that Aziraphale has been given a ring by Heaven that Heaven intends him to use to show his professional affiliation, but as with the flaming sword he gives away, Aziraphale doesn't use the ring for its intended purpose. By wearing the ring on his right hand, Aziraphale removes the option of interpreting it as a symbol of his professional affiliation with Heaven and renders it strictly a personal ornament. He subverts a symbol of Heavenly menace into an object of beauty and queerness.
I mean queerness in both senses. If a human takes any symbolic notice of his ring, they'll note the signet is on his right hand and conclude Aziraphale is gay. If another angel takes any notice of it, they'll conclude Aziraphale is a bit odd--that he doesn't pay attention to the finer points of how to fit in with the archangels, doesn't do things like other angels do.
In conclusion, pinky signet rings as a queer signal are just the fucking coolest and I vote we bring them back immediately.

my first aziraphale/crowley fic was inspired by j&w at first, but it veered away from drones club and turned into more of a one hundred guineas oneshot instead. [In A Place Like This by ghostrat] i'd still love to try and write some woostery shenanigans because edwardian-jazz are my favourite eras 😭
i started doing a reread!!!! but i got so swept up in GO fic i stopped part way. but i'm gonna pick it up again soon and you'll hear alllll about it.
it rarely pops on my dash, but when i do go looking for it, i tag with #very good sir 💛 there's some spectacular art in there

[[ semi-plotted started for @ourcwnside
The Hundred Guineas Club was, if nothing else, somewhere where his 'colleagues' at Torchwood couldn't follow him. And it certainly didn't lessen the appeal that the place was full of wealthy men all interested in a good time. This one in particular, with bright fluffy hair and cream suit, must have especially filthy interests, because he'd never seen him pair up with anyone, and sue him, but Jack was curious.
"Hi there," he said, sliding up next to him at the bar with a wide smile already firmly in place. "I saw your dancing. Very nice. I don't know if I've ever seen someone quite so enthusiastic."

On this date in musical history…
September 26th

[ad_1] The schooner "America" won what would become known as the "America's Cup" race on this day in history, Aug. 22, 1851.Known at the time as the "Hundred Guinea Cup," referencing the value of the trophy, the race was sponsored by the Royal Yacht Squadron of Great Britain. It consisted of a race around the Isle of Wight."America," a 100-foot schooner built by George Steers and William H. Brown — and entered by the New York Yacht Club — won the event, said Encyclopedia Britannica. The trophy was renamed "America's Cup" in its honor. ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY, AUGUST 21, 1959, HAWAII BECOMES THE 50TH STATION: ‘A STRONGER NATION’ The trophy then became a "challenge trophy" and is now open to "sailing clubs of all nations," said the website of INEOS Britannia, a British sailing team. While countries are free to enter ships, "each competing vessel must be designed, built, and, insofar as possible, outfitted solely in the country that it represents," said Encyclopedia Britannica.  A James Bard painting of the America schooner yacht, which won the first America's Cup race on this day in history, August 22, 1851.  (Wikimedia Commons)The second awarding of the America's Cup did not occur until 1870. That race, too, was won by the New York Yacht Club. The New York Yacht Club also won the next several races. "American teams representing the New York Yacht Club successfully defended the Cup against all challenges for 132 years – the longest winning streak in sport – until an Australian team won in 1983," said INEOS Britannia. ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY, AUGUST 7, 1947, THOR HEYERDAHL AND THE KON-TIKI RAFT MAKE IT TO POLYNESIAThe Australian victory in 1983 changed the race into a "truly global phenomena," said INEOS Britannia. The winner selects the location for the following America's Cup.  Emirates Team New Zealand helmsman Peter Burling holds the America's Cup trophy aloft after defeating Italy's Luna Rossa in race 10 of the America's Cup on Auckland's Waitemata Harbour, March 17, 2021. can’t believe i came back on this hellsite in the midst of “good omens is queerbaiting!!!” discourse while the u.s. literally descends into 80s-style gay panic...... queerness CAN BE sexuality but is more than sexuality, queerness is also redefining intimacy, it’s finding chosen family, it’s rebellion by the act of existing... neil has been giving the world queer characters (desire, sam black crow, crowley and aziraphale...) since before some folks making these statements were even born. representation is important and trust that i understand its value, especially when queerness is being erased and silenced left and right in the real world, but there is so much room for variance in the types of queerness that needs to be represented. what do people think all queer folks and relationships look like? physical intimacy and verbal confessions are not the only hallmarks of queerness. what about the ace spectrum? what about gender variance? both of which have been represented... not to mention heaven and hell in good omens, and crowley and aziraphale’s choice of “[their] side” (particularly in the show) are as good as direct metaphors for chosen family in the face of abusive and repressive families of origin, whose centuries of horrid mistreatment will almost certainly have imprinted on crowley and aziraphale’s psyches - i can imagine they both have centuries of trauma to unpack from all that dogmatism - self loathing, and internalized shame about their feelings, desires, and what they feel they do or don’t deserve... i suppose aziraphale canonically being part of the hundred guineas club isn’t representation, crowley being a genderfluid icon isn’t representation. the american execs were upset that neil wanted crowley to be ashtoreth in the show because they thought audiences would be put off by “men in women’s clothes” and neil insisted. i imagine if the american execs had had their way david would have been wearing men’s jeans and sporting a military buzzcut....... but tell me again how neil gaiman is queerphobic lmao. all the time the cast themselves mention how crowley and aziraphale are in love. for goodness’ sake both david and michael half of the time act in love with each other in real life and that’s because the spectrum of human capacity for emotion and intimacy is EXPANSIVE... michael has done drag and david kisses men and half the people involved in this work are beyond categorization anyway. anyway none of this is very coherent, it’s just this insistence on SHOW NOT TELL in the community feels a bit reductive and intrusive and it makes me wonder whether my own peers in the community see my often-quiet and often-private version of demisexuality and kink and genderfluidity and queerness as invalid because i’m not fucking and shouting about it in the streets!!! i’m so frustrated the world is a sad place. let people love this queer-ass ineffable duo in peace....
