I'm trying to count how many times Hiccup is captured/kidnapped throughout both series, the movies and the short films, so here's my criteria:

Any time he is unwillingly moved from one location to another by a dragon, viking or other character.

This includes any dragons picking him up and flying off somewhere, even if he is okay with it later.

This does not include when Toothless/his friends drag him off to show him something.

Any situation that prompted the dragon riders to rescue him.

Any plans that involved him giving himself up or joining up with a villain/antagonist.

This does not include the time he and Dagur were trapped on that island together.

Any time he is tied up and led somewhere or locked up/held in place with a guard.

Here is the list of situations I have compiled in (hopefully) chronological order:

HTTYD

Congratulations, no captures or kidnappings.

GIFT OF THE NIGHT FURY

When Meatlug (accidentally) brings Hiccup along to the Rookery.

RIDERS OF BERK

S1E6 - Hiccup gets taken to Dragon Island.

S1E16 - Hiccup is captured by the Outcasts on their island.

S1E19 - Alvin Captures Hiccup and Toothless at the "Isle of Night".

DEFENDERS OF BERK

S1E20 - Hiccup gives himself up to Dagur as part of his plan with Alvin.

RACE TO THE EDGE

S1E1 - the Dragon Riders get captured by Daugr on a hunter ship.

S1E7 -The twins put him in prison (this one's just here because I think it's funny).

S2E6 - The Dragon Hunters capture him.

S2E11 - The Dragon Riders get captured trying to save the Skrill.

S3E1 - Hiccup is captured by Dragon Hunters while trapped on an island with Dagur.

S3E8 - Hiccup and Toothless get caught in a Dragon Hunter Trap and are kidnapped and forced to participate in dragon fights.

S3E12 - Viggo captures all the Dragon Riders at the auction.

S3E13 - The Defenders of the Wing capture the Dragon Riders.

S4E3 - First Hiccup is caught by Amos and Berthel.

S4E3 - Then he's caught by Savage.

S4E3 - Then Krogan gets him after Throk saves him.

S4E3 - Ryker captures him for the tiniest bit right before the riders arrive.

S4E10 - Hiccup is caught with Ruffnut when he tries to rescue her from Viggo's trap. Unlike the other traps, he needs the other dragon riders to rescue them.

S5E2 - The Sandbuster captures Hiccup and Snotlout.

S6E8 - Viggo hands Hiccup over to Krogan as part of their plan.

HTTYD 2

Valka kidnaps Hiccup and Toothless.

HTTYD 3

Grimmel captures the dragon riders.

HOMECOMING

Once again, no captures of kidnappings

Up For Debate:

There are a few situations which technically fit the criteria, but I'm not sure if they fit considering the context of the show:

S5E5 - the riders are stuck on Vanaheim, guarded by the Sentinels. (Rtte)

S1E3 - This is a technicality, but when Hiccup joins up with Dagur to keep him away from the other dragons. (Dob)

EDIT: I forgot that even though my criteria says that the time Dagur and Hiccup are trapped on that island together (S3E1 of RTTE) doesn't count, because he is joining up with an (at the time) antagonist, there is a moment when Hiccup is captured by Dragon Hunters near the end of the episode.

After careful discussion (aka me ranting at my roommate) S4E10 of RTTE is also moving from "up for debate" to the official list. These changes are reflected above.

This brings our official count to 22 captures/kidnappings!

Honestly, the hardest part about this was finding the distinction between being captured or being trapped and what I wanted to count. When Hiccup isn't captured, he spends a lot of time in traps.

Stoick the Vast

8/10

He was an antagonist in the first movie change my mind. His conflict with Hiccup was super interesting and compelling, definetly one of my favorite parts of the movie

The Red Death

6/10

It did it’s job ig? It felt like a video game boss lol

Obsessed with this man. Easily the best HTTYD villain in the franchise and he creates the best conflicts in the series by far. I love the way he mirrors Hiccup’s character, I could honestly go on for a while about how much better he is than all of the other villains in the whole franchise lol

Krogan

His overall vibe is super cool and I really enjoyed that episode where he and Viggo were looking for ways to kill each other. His design is awesome

Trader (Traitor) Johann

Ruined the way I looked back on the hours in my childhood I spent watching ROB/DOB, I have never felt so betrayed in my life and I never will again, this man gave me trust issues

He was alright, but I was never really scared of him. I liked how he killed Stoick, and he put Hiccup in an interesting situation, but other than that, he just didn’t do it for me

One thing I love is listening to httyd eps while imaging different AUs and cause I’m bored, can’t go to my room rn (and found half of this sitting in my drafts from last month lol), I’ve decided to pass the time sharing one.

It’s from the latter part of Midnight Scrum (going from when Hiccup gets taken) and it’s a royalty AU (which I’ve seen a lot of floating around here recently too)

It’s the standard ‘Kidnapped Bride’ plot line, with King Viggo wanting Prince Hiccup. He puts the bounty on Hiccup to bring him in.

- Amos and Berthel are still bounty hunters but they are a bit more threatening and less silly, most of their sillier lines I ignore and imagine them said in a more threatening way. They still retain their gay energy though.

- Savage was originally one of Viggo’s servants and when Hiccup was first held captive, he was there to guard Hiccup’s cell. He was slightly kinder to Hiccup in that situation but then when Hiccup escapes, he gets blamed and exiled. That makes his whole motivation to get Hiccup to Viggo being to get back into Viggo’s good graces. Hiccup doesn’t trust him either way cause even if he was kinder then other guards, he still wasn’t kind. He does hold hope that he can reason with him originally though (because Hiccup knows he knows what Viggo is like) but Savage is very blinded by his goals.

- Throk is a well known assassin but gets hired by Mala a lot (and their relationship, I picture it platonically but romantically also works, grows over time until he becomes her personal assassin. At this time though he could be hired by anyone). The Defenders of the Wing are also another kingdom but there isn’t a war against Dragons and they hold no real allegiance to Berk and aren’t actual enemies to Viggo either. They are a neutral party but Mala does prefer Hiccup (but she’s not forthcoming about it) and thinks Viggo is cruel, so decided to help him by hiring her favourite assassin.

- Krogan is also an assassin/bounty Hunter (He and Throk have competed a lot in the past). He has no ties to Drago and was more Viggo’s personal assassin (and lover) before they had a fight. He decided to get Hiccup to see Viggo again and remind him of his skills in a threatening way. It’s a mixed message of ‘remember how much you need me’, a ‘here’s you new lover, I’m stronger then him (thus being more on you’re level, and I could kill him easily if I wanted)’ and a ‘dont forget how dangerous I can be to you and your goals’ type thing.

Some lines I’ve decided to alter slightly:

Berthel: What's that? Dragons? -> Berthel: What's that? / Amos: His friends. (Since they already knew of the dragons)

Hiccup: Viggo will never respect you. He's playing you for a fool. -> Hiccup: You know Viggo will never respect you. Please. He's always played you for a fool.

Savage: I don't know what they're gonna do to Hiccup. It's his own fault he got grabbed, not mine. -> Savage: I don't know where they’re gonna take Hiccup. It's his own fault Viggo sees him as a whore, not mine.

Hiccup has a rough material built into his chest plate capable of creating sparks when striked against and uses that and a stone to light a stick on fire rather then the dragon blade. (Kinda a little hint of magic because I said so)

Ryker: Oh, I'd love to drop you, but Viggo wants to kill you himself. -> Oh, I'd love to drop you, but Viggo wants you for himself.

Midnight Scrum was surprisingly entertaining...

1. Hiccup was pretty much passed around like a hot potato this whole episode.

2. Soft-Spoken Sam stole my heart with one word. Berthel came in second. He had one job.

3. But how he and Amos manage to snatch Hiccup right out from under Toothless’s nose?! That dragon’s no slacker when it comes to protecting his boy.

4. Did that moron seriously try to jump overboard while he was tied up?! Really, Hiccup?! Really?!

5. STOICK AND TOOTHLESS WORKING TOGETHER TO RESCUE HICCUP IS EVERYTHING I WANT IN LIFE.

6. Detachable leg: 3 Everyone else: 0

RTTE S5 HIGHLIGHTS

OKAY GUYS I WAS PLANNING ON WATCHING ONE EPISODE OF RTTE S5 BEFORE BEDTIME BUT INSTEAD I BINGED THE ENTIRE SERIES BECAUSE HOLY THOR-EFFING-CRAP.

This was such a GOOD season of Race to the Edge. As in, I absolutely adored it. Many of the episodes felt very new and original - not to mention that there were a lot of fascinating plot-centric episodes. This wasn’t some repeated attacking of the Edge (though we did get that)... we got all sorts of interesting reveals, twists, and developments. Episodes focused on all the main characters, we got some interesting characterization on Hiccup’s part that leads him to his HTTYD 2 pacifistic self, we got answers for many many many central or side plot points (Alvin’s going-ons, what was happening with Savage, what happened to Oswald, etc. etc. etc.) and it was just... aeo;anwge;goiaen....... it was so good!

SO GOOD!!!!!!!!!

Below are semi-liveblogged highlights I noticed as I was watching all the episodes:

Snotlout ranting about his S being destroyed was hilarious to me… it sounded like he was saying “my ass.” “YOU KNOW HOW MUCH I LOVE MY ASS!”

Hiccup doing more forge work to get the right concentration of Death Song amber for the volcano seals. Oh my goodness, between that and his work on the second Dragon Eye, we saw a LOT of Hiccup at his work. Love seeing smithing Hiccup come to the forefront so much this season.

The twins continuously demonstrated that they simultaneously lack common sense but contain a bizarre wealth of academic knowledge. For instance, Ruffnut and Tuffnut intellectually talking about Mesopotamian nature deities, parasitism, and symbiosis… then chiding Snotlout for not reading enough... love it.

The moment Snotlout put the bones on Hiccup’s stub to replace his leg. He used. a. freaking. skeleton. for. Hiccup’s. leg. I laughed so hard I almost had to pause the show. Best laugh I had the entire season.

AMOS AND BERTHEL ARE BACK!

Hiccup’s sword looks beautiful. The design, the hilt... <3 <3 <3 Dare I say it, but I actually like the design of this sword better than what we see of Inferno in HTTYD 2.

Also Hiccup and Snotlout with crossbows. Actually frankly any time I see the major characters with weapons I just get happy don’t mind me.

Tuffnut Laverne Thorston and Snotlout Gary Jorgenson.

Ruffnut willing to defend Tuffnut and protect him and encourage and comfort him when he’s feeling vulnerable. Tuffnut doing contorted logic but being so selfless he’s willing to “die” for his sister. I will say it for eternity and more: these siblings are amazing.

A dragon that actually hoards treasure! I mean, HTTYD is extremely enjoyable because of its ingenuity regarding dragon species and abilities, but actually watching a dragon have a treasure hoard was… actually really fun.

Snotlout, sarcastically, to Hiccup, “You’re like a ray of light, lighting my way. Super shiny.”

Fishlegs and Astrid moments! These are so great! I didn’t know how much I needed them until I saw them! This episode really felt like the whole team was together. There weren’t factions... they have all come together as friends and were really bouncing off on all sorts of interactions.

Astrid being the hero who saves the day when she figures out the map and comes to Hiccup, Snotlout, (and Amos’) rescue.

Hiccup making a cage of sunlight. That was so freaking clever.

Snotlout is such a badass in this season. First, he snarls and says, “We’re not going anywhere without that guy!” when Amos tries to run to safety when Hiccup is in danger. Then Snotlout shows how courageous and bold he is when he’s working with Gustav on Berserker Island. Snotlout even admits to being nervous but he knows what has to be done. Snotlout shows that he can kick butt and do major damage, and you see it oh-so-beautifully-clearly. And even leaning back off the edge of the cliff when the Wing Maidens were chasing him… and that moment he took initiative when Hiccup and Astrid were absent? Seriously this moment made me realize how good of a leader Snotlout would be. Now I’m imagining an older Snotlout being a leader in battle. AHHHH SNOTLOUT WAS SO GOOD THIS SEASON OH MY GOODNESS!!!!

Snotlout. Snotlip. Dagfart. Gusteranamo. “SNOTKNUCKLES?!! HE WROTE SNOTKNUCKLES???”

Walmarket…… oh my Freja the anachronistic pun was great.

There is a skrill shrubbery. On Berserker Island.

Also Dagur’s throne totally feels like a Game of Throne’s reference.

SAVAGE TAKING CONTROL OF BERSERKER ISLAND. I HAVE SO MANY EMOTIONS ABOUT THIS. I HAVE SO MANY THOUGHTS ABOUT THIS. I AM SO HAPPY ABOUT THIS.

Dagur angrily screaming “OMMMMM!”

Team Heather, Ruffnut, and Astrid. Is it just me, or should we have those three together more? Great dynamics.

An episode confronting Snotlout’s misogyny.

The dragon gang getting into a huge food fight.

Bilout is so freaking queer the entire Return to Thor Bonecrusher episode holy crap. He even says “But I loved you” while he’s crying I mean like how more bi can you get.

WE GET TO SEE ALVIN THE TREACHEROUS AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hiccup and Astrid sparring. Hiccup and Astrid sparring. Hiccup and Astrid sparring. Note: look how far we’ve come since Riders of Berk where Astrid could take Hiccup out in a single move.

Really awesome flight scenes (like the start of Ep 8) where we watch shots from the dragon riders’ perspective – so that we can see the dramatic and wild experience that is riding on the back of a dragon.

Tuffnut doing one-armed pushups. We underestimated those arms, yo.

Gobber singing and dancing with a drink in his hand while Spitelout laughs in the background. I could have an entire television on Gobber, Spitelout, and Stoick. I really could.

The tiny girl on Berk loading a crossbow when everyone’s preparing for battle.

Episode 8 is so good with characterizing Hiccup, Stoick, Ruffnut, and Tuffnut into what they are in HTTYD 2. Oh my gosh it’s so good with that.

Viggo saving the dragon hunter from falling in lava is EXACTLY why I dig Viggo so much. He’s not the stereotype of bad guys are heartless, bad guys don’t look out for their allies, bad guys are willing to let their cronies get the bad end of the stick. Viggo isn’t a monster.

The Singetail FARTED FIRE. XD XD XD

Spitelout named the “lazy” and “useless” dragon “Stoick.” And the part where Spitelout breaks into song. I just… I just… I can’t. XD

Draggggooooon batttttlllle!

Do I actually like the Ruffrock ship? I think I actually like Ruffrock.

So Ruffnut said “The Changewing ate my baby brother” That could just be “baby” as a term of affection, but almost always that signifies who’s older when you’re talking about siblings. It looks like Ruff is the older twin!

“One-legged dictator with a weak chin.” I think I have my new favorite insult.

During Ep 12 during the search for Chicken... Snotlout’s mystery book narration with constant camera zooms onto his face. “Shut up, Astrid,” he cleverly responded.

The rooster! Chicken’s chicks!

Snotlout’s tan lines. :) :) :) :) :) And biceps!

I TOTALLY CALLED IT. I TOTALLY FUCKING CALLED IT WITH JOHANN. I NEVER SAID ANYTHING BUT I FIRST GOT SUSPICIOUS WITH HIM IN THE FIRST SEASONS OF RTTE WHEN HICCUP BEGAN QUESTIONING JOHANN FOR INFORMATION. AHHHHHHH. THIS IS SUCH A TWIST WITH JOHANN. WHY DO I LIKE THIS SO MUCH?

1: What is your #1 fandom?

It depends on how you define “number one fandom.” Is it the fandom someone has been the most involved in historically over time? Fandom they’ve been in the longest? Fandom they’re currently the most invested in and obsessed about? All sorts of options!

The fandom I’m currently constantly obsessed about now is Mass Effect, but the fandom I’ve been most steadily and most lengthily involved in is HTTYD. So I guess I’ll respond about HTTYD. ^.^ But uh, if anyone WANTS me to respond about a different fandom I’m in, feel free to request!

2: What are your top three favorite characters from your fandom?

It depends on my day, month, year. Currently I might say Hiccup the Second, Snotlout Jorgenson, and Ruffnut Thorston. Those are my jive right now.

3: What is your favorite pairing from your fandom?

Ya’ll know I don’t really ship things 99% of the time, but if I have to pick a romantic ship in HTTYD, I’m going to happily vote Stalka. There is something extremely precious about the tenderness Stoick shows to Valka when they reunite in HTTYD 2. Love it.

4: Who’s your favorite sidekick?

Hookfang! I love Snotfang dynamics so much. Hookfang has a great amount of entertaining personality to him, being a rather obstreperous - but still loyal and protective - dragon.

5: Who’s got the best outfit?

I love Heather’s outfit a lot, but I am going to have to vote Mala. What she wears is extraordinarily regal, ornate, artistic, and intense. It has a fascinating combination of dark severity and aesthetically pleasing flow. Me likey. A lot.

6: Who has the best weapon?

Again, Mala. A little bit of an unconventional blade, perhaps, but very pretty. I’m a sucker for long, flowing blades. What can I say?

7: Who’s the most athletic?

Astrid. Extraordinarily talented gymnast and axe wielder. 11/10 amazing.

8: Who can you relate to the most?

I would say Heather. She has a lot thrown at her face, all sorts of troubles in life that she has to figure out how to psychologically handle and untangle. Who can she trust? Can she trust anyone? How can she handle her moments of insecurity? How does she respond to adversity? These are all deep challenges that we may face in our lives, and these are concepts I too have gone through in life. I find Heather quite relatable.

9: Who’s the cutest?

Okay but the cute way Fishlegs hunches down or babbles on and on about dragons or gets worried about the mission or coos at Meatlug... you can’t do anything except say Fishlegs is a cutie.

10: The best villain?

While I think the writers could have done more in the execution of Viggo, I hugely adore the fact that here is a character who is based upon intellect and not brawn. Here is a character whose cockiness he can beat Hiccup is merited. Here is a character who successfully thwarts Hiccup time and time again. Here is a character who often faces the situations with a suave calm. Here is a character who considers himself gray morally, not black or white. Here is someone who, even with his demise at the end, does not lose what his identity made him a unique villain. Viggo still falls as someone who could outmanipulate and confuse Hiccup. That’s sort of cool.

11: Favorite animal(s) from your fandom?

I feel like “dragons” would be too broad of an answer. So let’s say a species of dragon. THUNDERDRUMS!

12: Best moral supportive character?

I don’t feel like I could give any answer except Astrid and be honest. She is the individual who stands by the protagonist’s side and gives him sympathy, encouragement, and strength. Astrid is someone who might be a bold fighter, but she is also someone who knows how to give support. That’s really one of the coolest elements about her, so I can’t help but vote for her here.

13: Best main character moment?

Stoick jumping in front of Toothless’ blast to save his beloved son.

14: Best minor character moment?

Amos and Berthel’s brief introduction in Midnight Scrum.

15: Best OTP moment?

Can I pick BROTP? Or family TP? I adore the moment that Tuffnut tells Astrid in Edge of Disaster that he would do anything for his sister because of how much she means to him. Ohhhh yeah that’s great. <3
