Some strains of the HPV virus can cause painless lumps or growths around your vagina, penis, or anus called genital warts. But most people infected by HPV do not realize it, as they are asymptomatic and do not have any problems. Persistent HPV infections at the cervix which rarely cause symptoms like itchy or bloody lesions can lead to cancer. Do not ignore these signs. Get the HPV Real-Time PCR test to determine your risk of cervical cancer.

List of symptoms and stages of HPV
The human papillomavirus (HPV) is a viral infection that affects the genitals, anus, the neck and the throat in the body and causes warts to form. The body's immune system normally reduces and gradually eliminates the effect of HPV over time. There are special strains of HPV that linger in the body. These strains of HPV are generally not eliminated by the body's immune system and remain in the body for a long period, and are likely to cause cancer. Cancer of the cervix is more common in women, while cancer of the throat and genitals is more prevalent in males. Cancer is mostly caused by high-risk HPV that is serious if the infection remains in the body for a long period.
There are several causes of HPV infection. The most prevalent of these are sexual transmission and some specific genetic strains. People with specific genetic patterns are likely to inherit these from their parents, and they need to watch for common symptoms and get their diagnostics done, especially if warts are observed to be forming. Sexual transmission is the most common way of spreading HPV infection, especially through unsafe and unprotected sex. People need to take precautions, avoid multiple partners for sex and practice safe sex. Another cause of HPV infection is an improper lifestyle caused by sedentary living, lack of exercise, excessive smoking and consumption of alcohol. The presence of carcinogens in cigarette smoke causes high-risk HPV to turn into cancer. Low-risk HPV is not so dangerous, but people affected by even low-risk HPV need to take precautions and get vaccinated before full treatment if HPV infection persists.
HPV symptoms to look out for
HPV symptoms are not very prominent, but there are some symptoms to watch out for
The most prominent HPV symptoms are warts that form on the genitals, anus, neck, and throat. The warts are mostly not painful, but those in the throat may cause difficulty in speaking and swallowing, especially if warts increase in size. A very prominent symptom is a cluster of warts that end to resemble a cauliflower. This is the most dangerous symptom, and such a cluster of warts has a tendency to be pre-cancer and is likely to develop into cancer.
Another serious symptom is warts again but smaller and flatter warts that are not visible immediately. Such warts are dangerous if they are darker in colour than the skin beside them. Warts not visible directly are stained with vinegar to make them prominent.
There are some HPV symptoms that are more prominent in women. These symptoms include pain during sexual intercourse and bleeding after sex. Another prominent HPV symptom in women is a tumour or a lump visible in the vagina or the vulva. These are symptoms that should not be ignored and require immediate medical attention.
The stages of HPV infection
HPV infection begins with viruses infesting the genitals, the anus, the neck and throat. The infection is mostly low-risk HPV at this stage, and the body generally heals itself from its immune system within 2 years. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle along with smoking and consumption of alcohol in moderation help boost the immune system, and the infection goes down on its own.
There, however, some strains of the HPV, such as the 16 and 18 strains, that persist in the body. People with a past history of HPV infection develop the strain at a later stage, and these also persist in the body.
The next stage involves cervical cellular abnormalities developing in the body. At this stage, the infection is still mild though there is a risk of a diagnosis of carcinoma, which begins as moderate dysplasia. Cytological evidence of HPV infection is prominent, and this is manifested in the form of replacement of normal stratified epithelium with mitotically active epithelium.
This stage is still pre-cancer, and the cervix cancer takes about 10 years to develop fully from stage 1 to stage 3 cancer.
Both the symptoms as well as the stages of development of HPV need to be watched carefully, and treatment to be sought if the problem persists.
