I wrote my first completely unprompted poem in... years, I think. I've done some NaPoWriMo in private, and I've done the three word prompts, but this feels different, somehow.

I am still relying on old familiar patterns, the themes and tropes and tools I've drawn on so often. In many ways that feels lazy, or uninspired, or cowardly. But maybe it's not all bad. Maybe they spoke to me then for a reason and they speak to me now for a reason, and it doesn't matter if it's the same reasons or different, or if I can even tell what the reasons are. Maybe there is some part of me I am still trying to unearth, to hold up to the light in the right way, to untangle and pull apart and knit back together.

Or maybe I just like these tropes, these themes, these tools. Is that such a bad thing, either?
