so murderbot assumes that three offered its armor because it doesn't understand that the armor can belong to it and thinks mb taking the armor is just good resource allocation.
but if it assumes it doesnt have control over the armor, it would probably let whoever it sees as in charge (maybe ART?) handle it, or at least make the suggestion directly to that person. even newly freed in NE, it's willing to give its security advice (on hostage situations being undesirable) even if it doesn't expect to be taken seriously. it doesn't make sense to me that it would have so much trouble expressing the offer if it were just a security suggestion.
and then i think about how murderbot says later in the book that even if three felt fondly toward its fellow SecUnits, the govmod would prevent it from expressing that care or knowing it was returned.
so-- imagine you're three, and you havent yet internalized that you can just say "i care about you and dont want you to get hurt" to another SecUnit; but you can make sure that it has every resource it might need; you could probably do that even before the govmod was hacked.
you can't explain why, but you can hope that the gesture is explanation enough, and you can look for similar caretaking gestures in return; things like being given code and advice to do your job better, and being reassured when you express that you're finding said job difficult.
i think *murderbot* isn't aware of this language of care, because it hasnt had much opportunity to bond with other constructs. but three probably is, and probably knows how to read between the lines and guess that murderbot is starting to care about it, too.

what i love about mikage is that we are constantly being told that he is an aloof genius who nobody can understand because his mind is simply so much more advanced than everyone else’s, but we also never see him do or say anything actually intelligent, and all we really do see him do is desperately long for affection and companionship and do everything in his power to strive to preserve the genuine human connection he seeks.
with miki we are actually given a reason to believe that he is a child prodigy: he’s good at piano, he’s good at math, he’s knowledgeable about eggs. i’m not saying that’s in any way definitive proof of his “genius” (anthy is also good at piano, utena is also good at math, and knowing the basics of what an egg is isn’t really anything to write home about either) but like. we can believe that he’s smart for a child.
akio positions himself as something of an astronomer, but we are also provided enough evidence into his astronomical insight to realize, before he even admits that he doesn’t really care about stars, that he’s not very knowledgeable about astronomy. and that makes sense for his character too, because why would he care about having knowledge that he cannot use to exploit and dominate others?
but mikage is neither shown to be intelligent nor unintelligent, we are merely told that he is such a genius that it isolates him from his peers, more like a robot than a human. and so it doesn’t actually matter whether or not that’s true, because all that matters is that he’s special in this way, and that conditional power he is afforded through his status as genius is what matters to his role within the narrative.
the figure of the genius is not an exceptional figure in and of itself, but only due to how such a title is positioned in relation to others, and the referent (the ontologically meaningless designation of “intelligence”) is actually beside the point. and what’s more, to be afforded that “specialness” is actually harmful, because it insists on isolating you from your peers for completely arbitrary reasons.
genius is not a pre-discursive, discrete quality, but merely another notion used as a tool to isolate, groom, and exploit people from a very young age within a hegemonic capitalist paradigm that values production over the human cost of the labor necessary to produce it, and/or the patriarchal paradigm that values an idealized fantasy of power over the violence necessary to maintain that system.
not that i’m excusing killing one hundred boys or whatever, but is it any wonder he saw no other way to move forward than to burn the entire edifice down?

thinking about fitz who grew up surrounded by people praising him and admiring him but never really connecting with him.
thinking about sophie who was ostracised and othered by her peers and never fit in with her family, feeling lonely even when hearing everyone’s thoughts.
thinking about fitz who craved and desperately held onto the idea of cognates because finally someone was like him. someone was put on a pedestal and could relate to feeling smaller than your reputation.
thinking about sophie who latched onto fitz because she found someone like her. and then she found one, then two, then a whole community of people like her. she was in a place where she was valued.
thinking about sophie finding those people in her life who make her feel normal. despite all her exceptions, she’s accepted and unconditionally loved.
thinking about fitz slowly losing his sense of normalcy as façades fall and secrets are withheld from him.
thinking about sophie building her confidence up as she’s integrated into a world of support and guidance, even if from the shadows before her conception even started. how despite all the pain and fear, she has a support system.
thinking about fitz’ tall legacy and history of status quo to uphold. the heavy sword that dangles from the hands of the vacker patriarchy looms over his sense of identity. how his emotions are left alone in a family so large and revered.

i think tim is possessive in the way that he wants to monopolize bernard's attention but bernard is possessive in the way that he wants to monopolize all of tim's emotions. like if tim could he'd replace all the breath in bear's lungs with his own so with every exhale, bernard would only think tim, tim, tim. but bear wants to be the sole recipient of tim's emotions. he wants to keep every smile, every tear, every frown to himself. he wants all of that to only be his. but tim belongs to so many people unlike bear who only belongs to tim. so he settles with the way tim laughs so hard that he snorts, at his corny jokes, at home. he settles with the frown that appears on his face as he works out the kinks in a new WE proposal. bernard lets himself be content with the way tim looks when he's hovering over him -- flushed and panting, tears building up in the corners of tim's eyes. at least this, he thinks reaching out to caress his boyfriend's face, at least this is mine. only mine.

something about the way book 10 begins with hiccup being the loneliest he’s ever been. an outcast, a hero on a quest, a wanted boy on both sides of the war. with only three dragons as his closest companions. windwalker, wodensfang and toothless as sole witnesses to his growing up for an entire year - how evident that all three of them tried their absolute hardest to protect and take care of hiccup given the dire circumstances of being on the run.
and something about the way it ends with hiccup's own little ensemble of a group, dubbed as 'the ten companions of the dragonmark' - consisting of his most loved humans and dragons who would now undoubtedly follow him anywhere. finally having the chance to laugh freely and exchange stories and to breathe a little easier, even if just for a moment. and even if worry and guilt seem to weigh heavy on him, the wodensfang is there to remind him of his youth, to 'leave these worries to us old creatures' and that hiccup is no longer alone.

Imo Jason is “irredeemable” by default because I don’t see what he needs redemption from.
#I don’t know if I’ve mentioned this before but joining this fandom made me fucking hate the word ‘redemption’#no person I’ve seen who is in love with the concept knows the who what where when why or how it should work in a story#apparently it isn’t just themes and tropes anymore people don’t understand the proper use of the word ‘villain’#kelseethe#also hilarious: Jason should recieve sensitivity training HR style from Bruce ‘I’m the government and children are my cronies’ wayne#if Jasons headstrong/‘answers to no one’ attitude towards vigilantism is what makes people think he's villainous#I hate to be a broken record but the baddie you’re describing is Bruce#nobody thinks he’s a villain for only trusting in his own methods/self and repeatedly isolating himself#and on top of that gaslighting and hurting people around him in attempts to do what HE **thinks** is the right thing#you people always thought *him* heroic not problematic for all these traits#the only difference is Jason isn’t psychologically abusive & controlling#yet he’s still the bad guy just cause he liberally kills folks in the crime business.#l'd argue goth ham war is the b*tman story to remind you of everything that makes Bruce authentically himself#Idk how to tell you that Bruce mentally compromising/crippling his son in a twisted attempt to ‘save him from himself’#is perfectly in line with slitting the same son’s throat because he couldn’t stand to see him avenge his own killer#and yk what a redemption arc could be interesting for someone like Bruce#because he rarely questions or doubts his choices esp wrt Jason. no matter how morally dubious they may be#I think it would be quite fun to witness his extremely restricted worldview be challenged/shattered he deserves that humbling experience

as a trans person i am beyond disgusted by tumblr's actions and i honestly want to bail out of this hellsite (and i'm not even calling it that affectionately). but twitter is run by conservatives and elon musk, facebook is full of bigoted boomers, instagram is all ads and tiktok is government spyware. i just don't know any safe social media anymore where i can post pictures and art that doesn't either get flagged, harassed or sold to AI.

They sure do love making us desperate for safe spaces to exist and have a community so that they can slide in some of the worse policies and hope that we just let it go instead of being forced to become more and more isolated. I’m sure that’s fine, right? And nothing horrific happens to people in isolation, right?
