People often bring up the omake No Respect Time to use as Crocodad Propaganda, and y'know, I think there might be just a smidge more the omake can provide to Crocodad than what people have already discussed in the past
Like everyone's seen the comparisons between Crocodile and the anime screencaps of Don Luffyone, we all know how the two look so similar etc etc. But honestly, the resemblance is even more obvious (and hilarious) when you look at the OG manga version
(Sidenote but Don Luffyone is the only one who smokes cigars in the omake... Everyone else has plain ol' cigarettes... That sure was a decision there Oda)
And yeah, you might be thinking I picked this mangacap of Crocodile in particular because the resemblance is the most obvious here and I have My Crocodad Agenda to push etc etc.
But I will have you know that the original omake was from Log Book 5, which was published February 28th 2006. Meanwhile that Crocodile is from the cover of chapter 398, published February 6th 2006. So these were drawn by Oda around the same time. I didn't just cherry pick this cover page because it's convenient for my evil agenda, if these were drawn around the same time then the likelihood the resemblance is intentional does legitimately go up a little. (Also since they're both drawn by Oda instead of random animators, again, it's a bit less coincidental and could be a bit more intentional)
But as I said, I think there might be more to the omake than that.
In the past people have also pointed out and joked how a mere few months before Oda revealed Dragon was Luffy's father to us in the story (post-Enies Lobby), in the Monster Time-omake Luffy was depicted as a dragon.
Needless to say, people believe this was intentional foreshadowing (/trolling) to the Dragon reveal by Oda-- if not it'd be one hell of a coincidence at the very least.
The reason I'm bringing that up is that if people think it's safe to assume Oda was hinting at Luffy's heritage in one omake by making him a dragon like his father, then why couldn't Oda do the same in another omake (by making Luffy a mafia boss who smokes cigars like his father)? Keep in mind that Monster Time was published in May 2006 (in Log Book 7), just three months after No Respect Time. So again, these are from the same era. To me, that just makes the resemblance between Don Luffyone and Crocodile seem even less coincidental
Oh, but there's one more omake I want to bring up.
So people do often bring up Nerd!Luffy's appearance in One Piece Gakuen spin-off manga, pointing out how much he looks quite a lot like the Theoretical Child Oda gave to Crocodile in that one SBS. Yeah. So. 'Bout that.
There was this one omake called Red Hair of Class 3-Sea Time, in which Luffy was a loser ass nerd. And man, that resemblance
Like it's one thing when a spin-off manga drawn by a different artist does A Thing. It's another when Oda himself does it

HAVE YOU NOTICED HOW SNOW WHITE'S DESIGN IS THE MOST DIFICULT TO RECREATE?

So, seeing the Disney Princesses magazines, books and merchandising over the years, I felt that most of the princesses, if correcting some details, could easily be made to look exactly like they looked in their original movies (for example, coloring Cinderella's hair and dress from golden blonde and blue scheme to strawberry blonde and silver-white scheme).
There is only one exception: Snow White, while close to the design of her movie counterpart, always felt... like something was of, but I couldn't articulate why.
The black hair and ribbon were there, along with the color scheme of the dress, I should be seeing the same character, right?
Then, revisiting the movie, its behind the scenes production designs, and images of merchandise, I could notice that there were differences:
Notice how the eyelids are more heavy, the waist is more realistic, and the cheeks are more round in the screencap of the 1937 animated movie, while in a book illustration recreating the story, the eyelids are lighter instead of heavy, the waist is thinner, and the face lacks the chubby cheeks.
The hair in the 1937 is raven dark, while in the merchandise, it receives a blue shinning.
The nose is less defined in the 1937 animated movie, while in the merchandise, she is drawn with a perfectly, well defined nose.
In the 1937 movie, you can say that since it was still the animators first foray with realistic drawn, and moving human cell animated characters, with the priority being making the character move in a expressive way, while they still had a basis for how the character would look like, that they were still creating the character as they animated her.
So in the actual movie, you can see her as a human character who is still raw, rustic... some contemporary viewers could even brand her as "ugly" or "weird".
But to me, those imperfections, born from the animators embracing their limitations with this early work in realistic human characters, make her more expressive, lively... they make her more human, beautiful in her imperfections.
Most artists working in the Princesses movies, shows and merchandising today, don't have to embrace the same limitations the 1937 animators had no choice but embrace.
So they can only work in making shining, more polished redesigns as A representation of Snow White... but they probably can't recreate the rustic, charming imperfections of the original Snow White.
Their technology, and medium is not designed for that.

#tristampparty day 7, episode 7: wolfwood
this is another episode i've watched multiple times, but mostly just the first half for Livio Reasons. once again... LET'S GOOOOO
i've seen ppl say this is razlo at the start of the episode... i wonder... he is more razlo-like in his movements, and he starts yelling a lot... but his expressions are still livio-like, i think... i mean he is more expressive BUT he's not grinning like razlo usually does? sigh... see the problem is that we ALSO have a level of EoM brainwashing (and whatever the fuck else is going on) on top of everything which throws a wrench in trying to figure things out. I Just Wanna See My Boy.

when i saw the corresponding manga panel for this my brain neurons activated so hard LOL i wonder even more how orange will adapt razlo... since originally livio was trying to catch up with razlo. which i love and think is super interesting. so what is orange planning? ...is livio even aware razlo exists at this point...?
oh also livio looks a bit older here. which once again has me wondering about the timeline. the way the experiments were presented with rollo and nicholas, it looked like they were just on that table forever. as in there were no breaks in between. so... when is this? how long is it between livio volunteering himself for EoM and the experiments on him taking place?

i wonder who these people are... i thought they might be the EoM soldiers that razlo killed, but those aren't EoM uniforms... it looks like the prison uniform wolfwood was wearing... wolfwood tried to run away, so it makes sense that he wouldn't be the only one, although the phrasing "stand in our way" more implies they tried to stop the operation altogether. but... hmm... they just had regular goons as guards at the time of wolfwood's escape attempt. livio is special... would they really give him a job like guard duty?

i love the scene of vash at the spaceship controls, the animation when he's working the keyboard is so smooth. hmmm, it also reminds me of wolfwood's introduction episode in 98... serves the same narrative purpose of Vash Knowing Things He Shouldn't about spaceships

everyone always points out the episode title card being a gut punch but THIS was an unexpected one:
this is how wolfwood is credited this episode and because i'm insane i immediately had to go back and check - this is also how he's credited in episodes 5 and 6: as "nicholas d. wolfwood/nicholas the punisher". in episode 4, he's only listed as "nicholas d. wolfwood". haha ouch!
this post ended up being a little less substantial than expected LOL but we'll soon be getting into the episodes that really give me psychic damage so :^) looking forward to it!!

since persephone is supposed to be "plus-sized", i wonder if that's the reason her boobs are prominent everywhere
like having larger breasts doesn't equal being chubby (though of course, like other parts of the body, they can grow thicker as we gain weight) but i wonder if rachel thinks this is an easy way to draw a supposed fat woman whilst also keeping her within sexy proportions for the male gaze (i guess? male gaze in the sense of sometimes continuing to internalize what a proper woman should look like)
totally get what you're saying here and we can't rule it out because truly who knows what goes on in rachel's mind. i will say though, i've never been sold that rachel legitimately intended from the beginning to make persephone "plus size"
i'll come back and add screencaps when i'm not lazy but waaay in the beginning when she was posting these to tumblr, she mentioned how much she enjoyed drawing "curvy" figures, and that's pretty apparent in how persephone is drawn in the first couple of episodes - huge breasts, no waist, big butt. like, this was supposed to be plus size?
i know at one point the critique around persephone's chest being so unnecessarily centered made rachel go back out of spite and edit some panels so it was less pronounced, but overall, rachel has actually been increasing the chest size of all the female gods, not just persephone. minthe, demeter, hera, the furies, even hecate got a boob job over time, and since persephone has been the center focus for so long, her chest is going to be the most pronounced. it's just wild because rachel almost goes out of her way to show it off, and like - we saw in this recent chapter that persephone was still wearing her same dress; she hadn't changed her outfit. she had simply taken the sleeves off and let them hang down so (presumably) the doctors could draw blood from her? or something? but then she never brings them back up? so she's literally walking around with her chest hanging out. because why not, husband is gone gotta air out the goods i guess.
like if rachel truly, sincerely believes that panel is plus sized representation, i ... am very concerned for a number of reasons lol but at the same time who knows! this narrative is insane!

more than anything else, I just hate Razor's hair. usually I'm all for male characters with long hair, but Hoyo just fucked up Razor's so bad. which is insane cus' a wolf tail shape feels so obvious, for a kid literally raised by wolves. I would've even forgiven the stupid hood slit for that-- sure, Hoyo could've just put the hood down for Razor's hair, but I like the hood up, so whatever. but Hoyo just had to split the hair in half, ruining the potential tail shape. and it's clear that they split the hair so that the Vision on the coat is visible, but the obvious solution there should be to just... put the Vision somewhere fucking else. like, the Vision could have been literally anywhere else, good god
either way, I just decided to cut off the hair, cus' I had a better idea for a "faux tail" anyways. I know dead animals are prolly too morbid for Genshin designs, but it definitely fits my feral vision of Razor <3
finally, evidence that I did genuinely attempt the model edit, before I decided, "oh, fuck this"

Maybe this was in the online digital Nimona artbook before it went offline, but I didn't pay attention to the costume design rules for all the people in the Kingdom, until this video "Visual Storytelling: The Production Design of 'Nimona'" by Gnomon (from which I screencapped all these pics).
It's interesting to consider how these clothing design rules symbolized Ballister's and Ambrosius's positions in society, but also might have reflected bits of their personalities.
"So we first approached it by a very anthropological approach, where we sat down and said, "if this world was to actually evolve in a closed setting, behind these walls, from the medieval, in this kind of fear-based world, how would society evolve from the medieval rules? And how would that work?" So we researched the medieval rules and found that there was the distinction between, you know, nobility and citizenry, and then non-citizens. And so that was a good place to start for us, to say of "How do we organize this massive pool and system of crowd characters? but in a---in a getable way, that also relates to our story and expresses this world that we're doing?""
The Institute:
Nobility:
"So we broke we broke it down into contemporary, um, a contemporary ideology, where our main---our nobility was much more based on, um you know, haute couture rules, where we were---they were simple. They were bold. They were evolution of the kind of royal colors and sumptuary laws that the medieval had, but in a modern, in a modern take."
Citizens:
"Same with the citizens, where we leaned more into broader scope, where we needed to have the ability to have business wear, and athleisure, and, um you know, the color palettes that would be associated. …The range of body types that you would need, and…the range of races and ethnicities."
The Magicals:
Interesting thing about The Magicals, is this note "NO blue or neutral grey (due to the Institute's persecution, magicals have refused to wear Institute colors)."
Ballister's regular clothes seem to be the same color palette as The Magicals. Given the order of these slides, The Magicals seem to be the lowest rank in the Kingdom's society. Previous concept art showed that the Nimona 2023 movie originally would have portrayed a secret society of people with magical powers like Nimona. I assume these costume design rules were for them, though they got cut from the final movie. It seems appropriate that though Ballister has no magical powers, he is dressed in the colors of the Kingdom's lowest societal rank. But as anyone who has drawn him has noticed, the pendant on his shirt is blue. The one color which The Magicals do not wear, because it is the color of The Institute. Ballister is a commoner trying to become a Knight of the Institute, so it makes sense for him. And though Ballister's clothes could maybe be considered shades of gray (as per The Institute), they have the same dark values of The Magicals and are actually more of the "earthy" tones, noted in The Magicals' palettes. Ballister does not wear the light, almost silver, grays of The Institute. But he does wear a blue pendant. And though his pants have a thin golden stripe running down the sides, which is another color emblematic of The Institute, on second look, it is less gold, and more of a light tan, another earthy color. Almost makes me think that after the end of the movie, maybe he should change his blue pendant to purple, since these design instructions for The Magicals also note "One subtle purple item on each magical as a symbol of resistance and solidarity". (It explains the shade of purple in Nimona's skirt.)
Interesting to look at Ambrosius's outfit, while considering these design instructions. Ambrosius does not wear the "bold" colors or high amount of patterns prescribed for Nobility. Instead, he wears white and a dark shade of blue, with mostly solid, non-patterned clothes, as prescribed for The Institute. He is their symbol, through and through. Except for one point: his hoodie's secondary color of tan. Not only is tan an earthy tone, like The Magicals, the lowest societal rank in the Kingdom, but is takes up a noticeable amount of space in his outfit. It is almost like his one little piece of rebellion against his birth position and the expectations of society for him to represent The Institute and Nobility. It may be his one expression of who he is as a person, rather than the expectations placed onto him. It's kind of interesting that they let him get away with that. Maybe he had to fight for it. Maybe it makes him feel closer to Bal. Maybe he likes the distance it puts between him and the Institute. Maybe he didn't get brave enough to start wearing such colors until after he met Bal. (Now I'm getting into headcanon territory.)
Medievals:
This was explained as the costume design instructions for the flashback characters from 1,000 years ago.

What do you think of Juan Jose ryp art of beast?
So, I actually had to look up which X-Force/Wolverine artist this was, because I . . . honestly don't keep a massive track on who's on what duty for these books. I haven't even capped them, which is. Telling. There's like 80+ issues of comics featuring Beast that I haven't capped because I dislike the subject matter so much.
In fact, you know what, here's some pulling back of the curtain and some statistics for you - you know the little icons that I used for replies?
These are 100x100 icons cut down to size manually after being screencapped from digital copies, for maximum resolution and quality. I have QUITE a lot of them saved up, a lot of them from back when I was first RPing back in 2013-2015.
For Human Hank, I have 208.
For classic/Ape Hank, I have 622.
For feline Hank, I have 1,018.
For modern Hank, I have 457.
For Dark Beast, I have 150.
Now, this isn't EXACTLY how much I like one form over the other, it's also determined by which one I tend to RP as most, but the two definitely influence each other - most people I write with get feline Hank, he's my default for a reason, he's the Hank I know best.
BUT ANYWAY.
Juan Jose Ryp.
Honestly, it's good art. His anatomy is good, he can capture fur texture well, he is certainly drawing the Beast that Ben Percy is asking him to draw. It's just a bit of a shame that it's the single worst version of Beast ever put to page, so I automatically see it, recognise it, and go, oh, yeah, from THAT run.
Honestly, almost any other time, this would be a scenario that would have me salivating, but instead I'm capping this, uploading it, then immediately throwing it in my recycle bin. I don't want it on my computer, straight up. And it's a shame, because the art is eminently very good. The colouring is on point, it has that underwater shine, the shading is excellent, the muscle definition is lovely . . .
I do also have to point out something, though, which. Annoys me. And I hesitate to point the finger at Ryp, because I don't know that it's his fault or not, it could be just how Ben Percy is telling him to draw this, but.
That's the wrong Beast.
I'm extremely well acquainted with every one of Hank's forms, and that is way more akin to THIS
than it is to THIS
Ryp draws 90s Beast. He does not draw modern Beast. Whether this is designed to intentionally repulse the reader, who sees the design, thinks of TAS Beast from the 90s show, and then reads him being an absolutely colossal chode, or if it's just straight up artist error, I don't know. Hank has a habit of being drawn badly or incorrectly. Don't believe me?
This art is from 2012, from issue #24 of Secret Avengers. The Avengers vs. X-Men tie-in.
Beautiful 90s Beast, right?
Except, you know.
He's meant to look like this.
Like a cat.
Aren't we meant to have, like . . . editors, and shit?
But yeah, Ryp draws 90s Beast, and it's flat out wrong. Artistic interpretation, sure, but it's just straight up wrong. Again, I don't know if he's being told to do this or not, but it's something I need to bring up, because this is not something that happens to Cyclops or Wolverine, and it bugs the living fuck out of me.
But yeah, Ryp does draw a lovely Beast, even if he's inaccurate. That being said, he's not my favourite modern Beast artist by a country mile. Cassara and Gill, who drew Beast in the X-Force books, I like more.
I also have an affection for Coccolo, just because he draws a very round and lovely Beast.
Like, yeah, he's a genocidal war criminal, but fuck, he's got such a lovely belly and thick as hell thighs and I am weak.
That being said, they are not my favourite modern Beast artists either, because this is a poisoned run and I don't like to think about these pages.
Sean Izaakse draws the best modern Beast, in my opinion. Is it partly because he illustrated the last time Beast was written in character?
But I do just genuinely think he draws an effortlessly handsome and gorgeous and animated Hank.
George Perez often said he had a good time drawing Hank, even calling him the funny little monkey man, asking his 90s collaborator Kurt Busiek if he could come back so he could draw him more, and honestly, you can see it in his art, in how much love and attention and how elaborate he gets with his work on Hank. I get that same feeling from Izaakse.

The Painting in the Hospital Room Analysis
So, after watching Vol 2. on the big screen, I realized there is a painting in the center of the hospital wall in the finale episode. I thought it was a minor coincidence. However, I think it’s some of the best use of props to tell subtext I’ve seen in awhile.
Let’s get started <3
Shot 1:
Let’s start with the opening shot. Whether you believe in blue meets yellow in the west— blue and yellow are used to contrast each other throughout S4. It’s interesting that they have chosen to frame two yellow backlights around a yellow-toned painting. It draws your eyes.
Shot 2:
As they go to hug, the painting moves to go directly behind Will’s head. Even after Lucas moves to El, Will is still framed by the painting. Note, the yellow lights are not lighting ANY of the characters. They are simply used to draw are eyes to El when Lucas walks over to her. In addition, the yellow light separates the actors from the background.
Shot 3:
As the group draws nearer to Max, Will walks perfectly to stand in front of the painting. Note how the curtain is drawn to create a visual aesthetic frame that includes the painting. Also, the yellow lighting is right over Will’s shoulder.
+ my heart hurts here because look how isolated/separated Lucas is. He is placed in a more shadowed area of the frame to harken to his darker sadder emotional state. I want to give him a hug.
Shot 4:
Here— the painting sits behind the group. Bright yellow light highlights Lucas.
Shot 5:
Yes, this is how the shot looks. The camera is pushing in— however, this screencap is from the starting frame. They included the tiniest bit of Will’s shoulder in the frame (which makes it kinda off-balanced) + framed the painting between Mike and Will. Wonder why…
And my personal favorite shot—
Look how the painting is directly behind Mike as he looks at Will, but as Mike looks towards towards El, the painting follows. It lands right behind El’s head. It’s a visual metaphor for how Mike sees the painting as El’s, but it’s not the truth.
Note how much the yellow is contrasting with the blue in this shot too. You are supposed to notice. This is almost highlighted. You can visual see the light go from highlighting Mike/pulling your attention to Mike, and then to El. I cannot believe I missed this. It’s crazy. It’s a visual metaphor for how Mike thinks at the moment.
The way they could have easily replaced it with an X-ray that also can be used as a practical light to show Max’s conditions or medical charts. Yet, instead, they choose a yellow-toned painting and lit it with backlights + blocked the scene around it. It’s an interesting choice.
Also interesting that the shot below is the only one not in a bystanders POV or Lucas’s. It’s Mike’s POV which is funny because it’s the only shot that doesn’t frame the painting around Will and instead, it moves to go behind Eleven✌🏻
And one last thing:
The painting looks like a repaint of a Thomas Kinkade. Ya know, the Christian crazy painter that took advantage of other crazy Christians to gain money— it matches the tone of Hawkins and the religious fanatics that have emerged after they lost. Manic T. Hedgehog is Canonically GNC/Nonbinary
Please note that I'm not a Sonic expert and I didn't feel like scrubbing through the whole show for screencaps, so most of these are from the same four episodes.
1. From So This is Basically Sonic the Hedgehog: "The boys wear shoes and the girls wear entire outfits." This is true across pretty much all media. Some characters have goggles, a hat, and/or a bandana, but otherwise everyone follows this rule. Except the drummer. Manic wears half an outfit.
That's shoes and gloves (gender-conforming boys mostly have gloves, too) but also bracelets, earrings, a bag, and a vest. I'm not going to count jewelry, but no other masc-aligned character covers that much skin in thier regular outfit. The earrings seem to be unique among Sonic characters, though. It's worth noting, but not immediately relavent, that he has a double helix in his left ear.
While we're on the subject of clothing preferences, let's talk about Wedding Bell Blues. Now, it's possible he could be secure enough in his masculinity to be Little Bo Peep, but that doesn't explain the attitude or how quickly he suggested disguising himself as his own mother in the first place.
Look at the elation in those eyes. The disgust at being thrown to the ground. The poise and grace. The fact that apparently both ears are pierced, but he only wears the two earrings most of the time. And he didn't have to go all the way. The lipstick isn't necessary for the disguise. But it is a good segue to point two.
2. You know how Sonia wears mascara (or at least has eyelashes)? And Sonic just has eyelids?
Sonic's eyelids always stop before the edge of his eye. Even when they draw the line a little thicker, it never extends outside of the eye itself. Manic's frequently (not always) flicks out at the end when he blinks. You'd think it would happen equally to both of them if it was just a mistake. And while I have these pictures here, I need you to stop and look at how fucking cute Manic is. This hedgehog slays.
3. Sonia's voice is "girl", Sonic's voice is "boy", and Manic's voice is "sassy". I want to describe it as valley girl/surfer dude. They could have had a Brooklyn accent or used different slang and filler words, but they, like, always go for "like." That's way more valley girl than it ever was surfer dude. You'll notice that they use "dude" as a descriptor and an interjection, but they usually reserve "bro" for when they're actually referring to Sonic. It's not just the dialect, either, because that could be a learned behavior they picked up in the streets. Half of it is their tone. Even Sonic, who is famous for being snarky, doesn't swing his hips and strut the way Manic does.
4. Look at the way this hedgehog stands, especially as compared to Sonic in the same situations.
The confidence.
The attitude.
The lean back.
The dainty way they hold their hands. That's not a traditional drummer's grip. That's a sassy drummer's grip.
5. There are no gender lines in punk. Sonic is basic, Sonia is posh, and Manic dresses like someone who would flip Sleet off for calling them a slur. Not that Sleet would. Look at that cape.
6. Sonic's hair goes back. Sonia's hair goes forward. Trevor's hair goes back and down. Manic's hair goes up and forward.
It looks like Sonia's hair, but spiky.
7. In general, masculine and feminine characters in the Sonic franchise have roughly the same shoe size. In Underground, feminine, dainty characters like Sonia and Bartleby have smaller feet.
Manic's feet look smaller than Sonic's, but only by a hair. It's actually mostly an illusion. Their feet are the same proportion of their bodies and are drawn to be the same size when they're standing on the same plane. But something about them makes Manic's shoes look smaller in most shots.
Now, you might notice that some of these trends remind you of another Sonic character. Full outfit, smaller feet, overdramatic stance, highly expressive tone and word choice...

Hey yuki, it's me again, I have a question that's been running around in my head for a while, and about something I just noticed. On Sunny day jack's home screen (in addition to having a creepy little sound), the screen shows a drawing with broken hearts drawn apparently the drawing seems to show some children, and ... jack? I didn't identify it right, but when we press "Play" a sound appears, but the sound looks like a knife cutting something and possibly something dripped (blood). do you think that noise and that drawing in the background, could it be some kind of indication of what happened in the Accident of 84"? or it could be nothing much, but that kept spinning in my head after looking at the game's initial screen the whole time.
The title screen definitely gives us strong hints about the events of the '84 incident. It's influenced a lot of my various theories/headcanons about what might have happened. I've even screencapped it so that I could get a better look at it before the play button appears to obscure it.
Credit for the art in the screencap goes to Sauce and the rest of the team at SnaccPop Studios, of course.
The morbid child-like drawing is very similar to another one in the corner of the screen where we see Jack lying in a pool of blood at the studio over on the official twitter.
It's possible that the sound of the knife cutting something wetly could represent the way Jack was killed, but I personally suspect that he was shot. The sound could also represent Jack's potential method of killing those who get in his way.
It's easy to infer that the short people drawn next to Jack are the children who were in the audience when the incident happened. Their tears are understandable after witnessing such a thing. So is Jack's considering that he's dying here, as referenced by the X's for his eyes. That is... unless those drops were meant to represent blood splatter instead of tears.
Their mouths are open like they're screaming, and there's broken hearts above the children's heads. The broken hearts could be from seeing Jack's murder... or it could be because more happened in the incident than just his death. After all... we still don't know the motivation behind Jack's murder. For all we know it was personal, and the culprit publicly revealed something that broke the children's hearts to hear about their dear hero Jack...
Either way, I'm pretty convinced that this picture gives us a very disturbing glimpse into the '84 incident and just how badly its permanently scarred Jack's soul, and possibly all those who witnessed it as well.

He's also often drawn with wittol fangs in the manga too, which y'know could also be part of the style, but given his true literal biblical angel nature, they're certainly a Thing(tm) that adds to his unique charm.

I can safely say I never would have predicted getting This attached to the Karate Kid, but Cobra Kai is a very fun show and I've been enjoying it a lot. Turns out middle-aged-former-teen-protagonist-turned-mentor is a trope that's like catnip to me, and Daniel LaRusso is the latest inductee into my personal Hall of Blorbos.
This is a couple of screencap redraws that I did to figure out his face, because I am Definitely drawing more of this guy. The first one (drawn second, technically, but I like it best) is my beloved India ink markers and graphite pencil combo, with added red Just Because. And the likeness on the second one could do with a little work, but I did some experimenting with marker blending and coloured pencils and I really like how the colours turned out. Daniel’s a fun guy to draw, and it’s always a good time learning how a new face works.

Team Zahhak lair recerence. Very spooky— are those fetuses?
This panel makes my brain go brr bc yes this humanizes Hilmes but also there's a lot of factors contributing to that impression even outside of the dialogue— the panel is relatively small, giving off a vulnerable, subdued feel. His eyes (which often come across as inhuman or burning with an unearthly flame) are not shown, his expression is milder here than before, and the actual dialogue bubbles are also small to give a vibe different from usual: he is not the intense, terrifying man he usually is, he's a grieving person who feels responsible for Kharlan's family after what he's done for him. The result combined with the actual text of the dialogue conveys Hilmes' humanity even before we learn of his backstory. Good. Job.
Also, show us Kharlan's wife, Arakawa. Where is she.
He leaves, and his expression is difficult to see and he's shrouded in shadows. I wonder how he dealt with this loss when he gets truly alone. Does he keep thinking of Kharlan, replaying memories? Imagining an unusually quiet and subdued Hilmes all alone in a big room :(
Before, I used to wonder why the fuck Hilmes was rewarding Team Zahhak with gold of all things— I theorized on whether perhaps precious metals or the like could have a fueling effect on magic but turns out I was overthinking it. It's not bc money is somehow useful to Team Zahhak, no, it's because Hilmes does not understand Team Zahhak and what they're striving for. This scene was meant to convey that they definitely got their thing going on and are likely using Hilmes, and Hilmes is in the dark about a lot of things, including their intentions, going by how the Master dismissively flicks a coin away. It holds no meaning to him, it has no worth.
I kinda feel like a fool, lol.
So slaves are not meant to be seen on the main streets? I guess they have their own dedicated pathways? Or is this a Lusitanian invention? Hmm.
Not screencapped but the anklets make an appearance again!
Palace refs! This reminds me of the water garden in Otoyomegatari (which I screencapped in this post) which makes sense considering they're both drawn from the same cultural inspiration.

It should be that confessions brought forth by torture should not be trusted bc humans will just say whatever they think their tormenters want them to say just to make the torture end, it's not about obtaining accurate info or confessions at all, has never been. It's about the captors exerting their power over the captive, and it's disgusting.
The same principle applies here. People aren't converting out of genuine faith, they're converting as part of self-preservation. And while I'm not sure Bodin is consciously aware of it or not but it's clear that he just likes flaunting his power over the defenseless rather than wishing to make people see the true glory of Yaldabaoth or whatever.
God I hate this guy.

The burning of books still boils my blood, it's abhorrent. And Bodin even threw a fellow Lusitanian into the fire just because he suggested a sensible thing of, y'know, not setting these tomes on fire willy-nilly.

Foreshadowing! :D Rereading Bodin's atrocities gave me even more satisfaction for chapter 121.
I don't really have anything interesting to say about this, just putting it here bc I find it neat.
This is the first we hear of Narsus freeing his household slaves— when we're first introduced to him we only learn that he's a master tactician who pissed off the royal court and left, and though we already had a favorable impression of him (and his anti-slavery sentiments are already apparent) this sheds a newer light on his character.
It is not enough to just flip an old system over like a table and say “there, done, everything's fine and dandy now!”, it doesn't work that way. It is not enough to have an uprising or a revolution or whatever, it is even more important to have a clear vision of what comes after and how to achieve it. Good ruling isn't about winning battles it's about competent administration and resource distribution and all that jazz. It is not enough to just destroy, you must create as well.
The slaves in Ecbatana did not have the means to act on their (supposed) freedom because they hadn't planned for it, they don't have the means to, all they could do was the uprising without the follow-up and... I do not blame them, they didn't know any better, but this just shows how important these sorts of things is.
This also sheds a light on Hilmes because... he doesn't have a vision for Pars' future beyond him ruling it. That is not enough.
And look at Daryun looking concerned for Narsus!

Hello, on my main right now! Could I ask Haruka for 2, Amane for 6, 14 and 18, and Mikoto/John for 16? I know these are a lot of questions, I just like asking people about these things.
Haruka 2: oh god this is probably the best character for this but also the hardest fowheoqhwowhk. This is really hard but Weakness has my lots of my absolute favorite screencaps (sorry AKAAA but weakness has a cooler vibe to me). But this one is probably my favorite.
There’s something just so magical about the composition of this frame and the colours and the drawn fireworks and paired with the song I just akdbeiiwhaj. I absolutely love how Weakness blends real imagery and the anime style of milgram and it fits so perfectly, like it reminds me a lot of the final fight from undertale and stuff from Omori. And just the aesthetic and colours are so good I really have to applaud Mana Inoue on this one. Kinda a personal dump but the whole feeling of weakness really reminds me of this one art exhibition I went to a few months ago that had interactive pieces and light shows and whenever I watch weakness it reminds me of that amazingly surreal experience. Just the whole MV needs to be put up in an art gallery.
Amane 6: definitely amane and fuuta I’ve been thinking about their potential friendship a lot. I really like how their stories parallel each other, with themes of social conformity and fantasy vs reality. And it definitely seems they’re gonna become friends in canon as they’ve been interacting a lot with each other. There’s also how it seems that fuuta is adopting some of Amane’s beliefs which I know isn’t a good thing but it’s really interesting on a plot perspective and what that could say about fuuta’s mindset. They’re kinda like fucked up siblings and I love it.
Amane 14: I usually don’t have appearance headcanons but I guess it’ll be fun to make stuff. I can imagine her liking a bunch of animal stuff and yknow like the clothing in animal crossing that has those animals on it I can imagine her wearing that sort of stuff. In fact I feel like a lot of the items from animal crossing fit her. I also imagine her when she’s older to be either really tall or really short and pissing off es because of that. I also like to think that Mahiru painted her nails for the first time and she’s in awe but doesn’t want to admit it.
Amane 18: this is probably the best timing for this question ever. A song that really reminds me of her is “animalistic” from Creep-P and I’m currently doing some fanart of Amane in that song. Just it fits her so well and especially with her aggression in trial 2 and how the audience is perpetrating that cycle of abuse on her and even down to how it has a similar name and feel to deco27’s “Animal” which she covered. It really encapsulates the situation where because of the guilty verdict in trial one, she has lashed out and become “animalistic” and because of her lashing out the audience is more willing to give her another guilty vote and make things worse.
Mikoto/John 16: ooh this would be hard. I think Mikoto would have a pretty decent singing voice, he probably does karaoke from time to time and has a preference for pop rock songs. With John I can imagine him really not being into singing and tried it once but he was absolutely awful and his voice cracked constantly, to the opposite of his performance in meme/double lmao.
