Hello.
I come from @alatismeni-theitsa 's blog from a question.
Is it true that you have an ancient greece clothing masterpost?
Because I wanted to make a design for a character based on the clothing from any of these eras.
But since in this case I realized that I wanted to take a couple of creative liberties (is almost like ancient greece meets steampunk lol) I wanted to have a proper idea of what to do before I even attempt to wing it and end up with a cringeworthy and even insulting piece.
Soooo... Do you think you could help me?
Hi! Actually I do not have an Ancient Greek clothing masterpost. I have an extensive post (wouldn't call it a masterpost though) about Byzantine Greek clothing, maybe that's what @alatismeni-theitsa remembered. Linking it here for good measure.
As for ancient clothing, I have sporadically answered a couple relevant asks.
Ancient clothing for winter
Large post mostly about the hem length of women's attires (but it's both for modern and ancient)
General ancient Greek beauty standards
A bit more about the attires of the Archaic and Classical period plus about the little known kalyptra veil
That's all I've got.
As for what could make it an insulting piece: Given that you are going for an entirely fantastical concept, steampunk meets Ancient Greece, I don't think it can be insulting as there is nothing dubious about combining two eras that are 2000 years apart (industrial revolution and ancient Greece), it's pure straightforward fantasy, nothing shady, I assume everyone will be able to figure this out. But maybe just combine Grecian fashion elements only with the goggles and the machinery and whatnot, as opposed to combining, say, Victorian corsets and laces and boots with Greek chitons, because then there would be questions as to why Greek historical fashion appears anglicized or vice versa. I guess. It could still work but it would need a solid backstory for the character and to what led them to this unlikely mix. As for potentially mixing different Greek era clothes (intentionally or accidentally), honestly I don't see an issue with this because I mean one garment is Greek and the other is also Greek, like, I don't see a problem there. It would be anachronistic but, well, it's fantasy, of course it's anachronistic. That's my reasoning, I don't guarantee everyone thinks like me but I don't think there would be anything controversial in your art. The fact alone that you are asking what to not do shows that you don't intend to do something offensive. Just don't bend or appropriate the ethnicity, that's all.

Was there something that during your childhood other adults made you believe? I got two things:
1. They (uncles and mom) made me believe that BEAR GRYLLS was Sportacus, my clown ass believed that for years when the show isn't even american 😭🤡
2. My aunt once told me that if I ever dared to sleep alone, some goblins were gonna kidnap me in the middle of the night and this fear stayed with me until I was 13 at least (thanks, auntie...)
Sheesh that's wild, not the goblins omg 😭
I racked my brain for a bit but I can't think of anything any adults made me believe as a kid, except maybe lettingme believe in magic for a while. I didn't grow up in a Christian household so there were no tales of Santa or the Easter Bunny for me.
Your responses have me curious now: what things did everyone else's adults make them believe as kids?

Girlie, I know you made the spooky stories post a while ago but I wanted to share mine now that is Halloween. Can I?
This happened in 2021.
It was Wednesday night around 11/11:30p.m and I was wide awake (this is important to the story) but trying to sleep. The dog started barking at some lights outside and then I hear my uncle calling him to go out.
I faked being asleep because I knew mom would yell at me. I see my mom leaving the bed to get the dog out, I hear the couch being moved (since we had no decent lock, we used the couch as safety barrier), the door being opened and the dog leaving.
HERE COMES THE WICKED PART!
Fast forward to Thursday night and all of us three were talking about who let the dog out: Auntie said it wasn't her since she was deep asleep. Mom said it wasn't her but she swore it was ME who got up and got the dog out.
I told my mom she was talking bs because I saw her getting up and taking the dog out. It couldn't have been me because I was aware of the whole thing and also I was faking being asleep!
My uncle is out watering the plants and we ask him if he saw who got the dog out yesterday's night... He said that he only heard the couch being moved and the door being opened but didn't see anyone getting the dog out and then he heard the door closing and the couch being placed against the door again.
Bruh... We. Were. TRI-PPING!
Ok so, to give you context how my room is shaped:
Mom's bed is on the far right side of the room, there was a couch, and as it's not too wide, that leaves a small gap between the wall and the couch for her to see stuff but when she has to get up, she drags herself out of the very front of the bed and walks to the door avoiding the couch.
With that being said, I remembered that she got out of the bed and that would be normal if it wasn't because I see her walking through the fucking gap! She did not take the usual route! And she got up so alarmingly smooth it almost didn't seem human.
Anyways, we neded up saying it was sleepwalking, but whenever the topic casually comes up, she still swears it was me who got the dog out.
maybe the dog let itself out

Aunty, do you have any sources and references for clothing in ancient greece (from all periods and variations if possible)? Whether it be your blog or external links, I would be thankful if you did.
I wanted to make an ancient greece inspired design for a character. In short, I need good references to be able to take creative liberties (since it is not going to be something exact), but in a way that isn't clueless or makes you say "wtf are you doing?" 😅
You think you could help me?
Hello! @gemsofgreece already has an amazing masterpost regarding this! Perhaps she can help!
My two cents to anyone attempting this (Greek or not) would be ; be cautious with the mixing from different ancient eras, because there's a chance of details clashing and you want to avoid this "wtf" comment 😁 Just continue being careful as you are already!
I'd also urge you to do an exercise. Consider how you would do this mix for French, English, and Italian fashion - or maybe your own culture - and apply this logic to the Greek one. The logic behind this exercise is to see first how you would treat your culture and a very well-studied culture in the West, in order to cover any blind spots when approaching another ancient culture which might be further than what you are close to.
Again, that's generic advice, not specifically for you @hotpocket-fucker since I don't want to assume stuff about your perspective. But, regardless, I think it's a useful exercise. If your circumstances are different, adapt the exercise 😁

Hey I really like your blog, do you have an recommendations for blogs similar to yours? Or ones who talk about the same things you do?
Of course!!
These are discourse or somewhat discourse blogs that I tend to enjoy (even if I don't always agree with them). Some of them post discourse more often than others but they’re all worth a look at:
@bisexualpride
@glamorous-thespian
@hotpocket-fucker
@shrimpmandan
@ruimtetijd
@princessbubblegumandjustice
@kiss-the-cis
@clinically-not-straight
@bi-four-bi
@soupyspidey
@146-memory-lane / @discorseblog146
@the-rose-of-versailles
@battlesaxe
@punk-bitch-michael
@ugh-fml
@throwinglampshades
I’ve definitely missed some people. If any of my followers wanna add some more blog names that have good and helpful discourse posts feel free to. Some of these blogs only share a few things in common with mine, some share a lot. I hope that helps!

@hotpocket-fucker are you implying that men are somehow less susceptible to skull fracture than women?
proponents of “muh biology” always think that and then they think there’s no way women can do that kind of damage. when people were complaining about trans woman fighter fallon fox they curiously were unaware of, or purposely ignoring that time when ciswoman Cris Cyborg caused similar damage in another woman.

Hi, I just read the ask about LO Leuce and how RS mixes Greek and Roman myths with no context. Personally, I don’t really find it wrong to mix different myths together in fiction and it may be because in Chinese literature, elements of Taoism and Buddhism are often mixed together (think Journey to the West). I was wondering why some readers of LO find it wrong for RS to mix elements of different pantheons together.
Hi! 😁 The case of ancient Greek and Italian religion is not the same as Taoism and Buddhism for us. They are centuries apart with differences in stories and cultural approaches. I am not saying that they are day and night and I don't deny any similarities, but just because two things are similar it doesn't mean that they are the same thing.
Oh! Edit cause I forgot to add a similar ask I got, and I wanted to combine them! @hotpocket-fucker here’s your combined answer, too!
Tumblr media
The Italians* added the Greek gods to their pantheon nearly a thousand years later. But not only did they approach the gods differently (and with some good amount of imperialism :P ) but also made it their own separate religion, while Greeks had their own set of stories. I mean, many Greek stories bled into the Italian religion, but the Italian religion recorded new stories and also ignored many Greek ones. That means that centuries of Greek tradition and stories didn't make it into the Italian equivalent. The Italians at the time took gods from many pantheons to establish them as their own and show dominance over the peoples conquered by Rome.
Sure, it's not the worst thing in the world if a character who is a god has adventures inspired by different incidents, and I am not saying that one can't do it. But this lumping of Greek and Italian cultures is not very... intersectional. Our history, culture, and religions have been similar at times, yes but because we are neighbors. Being neighbors makes us similar but two distinct people. Greeks don't say "this is the temple of Zeus or Jupiter", it's just "Zeus" because Jupiter and his stories (even if some are similar), are of no canonical interest to the local religion. We are always careful when we pull sources, and mention it when a later addition to the Italian religion was made by another Roman, because we give importance to the fact that it was 1.000 years later than the beginning of the Hellenic religion.
One should at least recognize that just because the Italians said that Hades did one thing, it doesn't mean that the Greeks believe the same story is true, and that these stories were recorded by different nations with different cultures and in very different times. The differences are notable so the Roman gods are more like equivalents, not the exact same gods going through different "adventures" because different ethnicities wrote that they did different things.
An example would be Durga and Kali within India, and they even have many similar stories and many similar festivals. But their nature and presentation is different. Hindus don't like it when others confuse Durga and Kali. Similarly, the Aphrodite of ancient Cyprus is not the Aphrodite of ancient Greece. And in Buddhism, I am not sure if people would like to hear "Mahākāla is basically Shiva, so we can write that Mahākāla cursed his wife to be born a fisherwoman because he was annoyed she didn't pay attention to his teachings." (Derived of a story of Shiva and Parvati). Many more equivalents of Indian deities are included in Buddhism but I do get the impression that, although they reside over the same domains, they are not considered interchangeable.
Additionally, you are probably familiar with the god of Death, Yama and how he is presented differently in different cultures. The "Yama" in each depiction has a different presentation, different duties, and different powers. If you ask people of these regions and countries to tell you who is Yama to them, you might take a different answer. For context:
Yama, mid-17th century, Tibet:
Tumblr media
Japan. Statue of Yama (Enma) at Nariai-ji
Tumblr media
Hindu Yama:
Tumblr media
Of course, not one interaction between two and three cultures can be exactly compared to another similar interaction, but I hope I gave a general impression of the situation.
*I don't say "Romans" bc all their subjects were Romans, including the Greeks and I think it's a proper term since the region is the Italian peninsula - but Italians correct me if I am wrong.h
