What is a more ethical way to visit Greece in terms of lodging? Like in terms of over development in the tourist sector? Hotels or air bnb or hostiles?
That’s a good question. With the assumption that there is the budget for any of these, my recommendation is definitely:
Hotels >> Hostels >>> Airbnbs
With an ethical perspective. (With a quality perspective I would probably switch hostels with airbnbs.)
Hostels are not particularly developed in Greece. It can be an okay choice though, especially if you do not care about many amenities, you are young and don’t have too particular needs / preferences or are tight on budget. But it is 90% the lowest quality option in Greece.
Greek airbnbs can vary from mediocre to awesome and you can find okay places for very good prices. However, it is the least ethical option. Yes, it’s usually people renting a property for some more income but a) many rich people with a LOT of properties turn all of them into airbnbs or buy more and more properties to use them exclusively as airbnbs and b) Greece is one of the countries that has started facing very serious problems due to the uncontrollable expansion of airbnbs. The government is trying now to set some limitations to them. Especially the most touristy areas have huge issues since all property owners - regardless of income - turn their apartments into airbnbs, making it impossible for local people and critically important professions such as teachers and doctors to find houses on normal rent to stay. As a result they are forced to quit on their jobs and touristy yet remote places such as islands and traditional towns are left without teachers and doctors and generally suffer from an imbalance of necessary services. There are now just tourists, restaurant owners and airbnb owners frenchkissing or something there and that’s it. Sometimes, when the need for them is too bad yet people still insist on turning their houses to airbnbs, teachers and doctors end up sleeping in rooms or yards or rooftops of the local owners. That shit has turned into a dystopia. Furthermore, the rise of airbnbs has been causing big problems in cities and non-touristy areas as the cost of rent has skyrocketed (as the incentive for house owners to not make their property an airbnb) which makes it impossible for students and young people to find apartments in reasonable and affordable prices! I don’t care if anyone reading this has airbnbs and is pissed, airbnb is unethical in touristy countries!!!
Because Greece is a touristy country there is a huge variety of hotels to choose from, all quality types, all types of businesses. Greece is a country with MANY family run hotel businesses that can have great quality and can provide a cozy environment even better than airbnbs do. There are obviously also many big shark hotel chains but they are not the standard. The standard are the family run hotels. You can usually tell by the websites whether a hotel is part of a chain. For example, the Hiltons are foreign sharks. The Domotels are Greek sharks. But even so, even the sharks, honestly they do not cause a lot of problems. Usually they are expensive large hotels with all sorts of amenities, big breakfasts, nice environments.
There are some concerns about hotels lately getting overbuilt in environmentally sensitive areas but that is also the case for private properties intended to be used as airbnbs. This is something you as a tourist can’t possibly guess. But hotels - big chains or not - definitely cause fewer problems in the society compared to airbnbs.
But if you want both an ethical choice and good services opt for a small or medium sized hotel that is not part of a chain. Usually most of them are of the 3 star and the 4 star range, but you can find lower and higher as well. Those are often called boutique hotels.
Last but not least, a whopping 80% of the services sector in Greece is tourism, therefore all these people need tourists to go to hotels to make an income and help economy run smoothly. We are not talking about the sharks here, but simple owners who have to sustain the hotels, receptionists, cleaners, waiters, cooks and all other professions involved in a hotel. Let alone that the sharks employ a gazillion of people that have to make a living - gardeners, physiotherapists, gymnasts, drivers and so on. Airbnbs are antagonising that 80% of the service economy trying to steal tourism’s profit and turn it into their personal side income.
I know I didn’t have to write all this but I am passionate about this topic.

It was rare for InariHimari to be live on a Saturday. When the channel was first created, the creator only streamed on Sundays since that was the only day off she had between her weekday job as a hotel concierge and her Saturday gig as a cabaret club hostess. For five years, she worked herself to the bone and only found solace and relaxation in the low-key ‘studying’ streams she did at first. Even now, barely a month since she officially retired from both jobs and became a full-time streamer, she still didn’t go live on what can arguably be considered the best day of the week to livestream. Weeknights full of games and Sunday study sessions, but nothing on Saturdays.
And yet here was Himari sitting at her gaming setup with her LED fox-eared headphones and streaming for the approximately two hundred people that made up her audience. It was microscopic compared to the Twitch powerhouses advertised on the website’s front page, but Himari didn’t care. This was her crowd, her people, perhaps even her friends. Individuals who took precious time out of their lives to spend up to multiple hours with her just because they found her entertaining. She would forever be grateful to all of them and can only strive to get better at this so that they can be proud of her.
“Alright!” Himari said with a quick clap of her hands. “I want to try a new game to spice things up here. Do you guys have any suggestions?”
Almost instantly, the chat flooded with game suggestions. Himari had to lean in to read each title as it crawled up the screen. A majority of them seemed to be games that have just been released, which meant they would cost a pretty penny.
“Let me rephrase that.” Himari chuckled. “Do you guys have any cheap game suggestions? Not trying to go broke over a game I may or may not like.”
Her clarification made the suggestions slow down (most-likely due to viewers searching for potential titles to fit the criteria) until the chat was back to its low-speed scroll. It wasn’t long until one message from one of the channel moderators caught Himari’s eye:

“’Pocket Circuit LIVE’?” A low whistle followed as she leaned back in her chair. “I remember when those little cars were popular back in the eighties. Damn. Now I feel old.”
The chat erupted in shocked and angry-looking emojis, along with a plethora of messages:

Himari couldn’t help but laugh at the response. “Alright, alright. I take it back. It just makes me feel slightly older than I really am.”

Another chuckle escaped the streamer before she finally looked up Pocket Circuit LIVE. It took about twenty minutes in total for her to make a new account and download the game to her computer before finally booting it up.
“Oh wow!” Himari gawked at the vibrant colors of the menu screen. “This is really starting to remind me of the original toys…”
It wasn’t much longer until she was officially starting the game. The tutorial was easy enough to understand, but once she really started getting into the races with other online users, the true complexity made itself known. The embarrassment of losing her first four races on the easiest speed setting had very much sank in by the time Himari looked over at chat.

Himari didn’t have to look at her face-cam to know her face was a sheepish red. You’d think someone who’s been somewhat playing games professionally for five years now would at least figure out how to play a game as simple as Pocket Circuit LIVE, right? This was a game mostly played by kids! How could she of all people not get it?
After a couple more seconds of reading the mix of supportive and teasing messages in the chat, Himari took a deep breath and sat up straight.
“Alright,” She said, giving her face-cam her best confident smile. “I’ll try one more race. If I lose again, we’ll just cut our losses and play something else. Deal?”
Just then, a chime played through her headset’s speakers just as a pop-up message appeared on the screen layover at the same time as an identical message appeared in the chat:
JudgementKazzy has raided you with a party of 243 viewers!
Himari’s somewhat-false confidence melted away as a rush of shock flooded her and her eyes widened at the notification. She sat there frozen for what felt like a while before slowly blinking her eyes.
“That’s not…” Her voice trailed off as she swallowed. “That’s not real, is it?”
Just to be sure, she glanced at the chat.

“Holy shit.” Himari blurted out before holding a hand over her mouth, still very much in shock and/or disbelief as the chat continued to unravel.

That was as much of her regulars’ messages Himari could read before the chat got flooded with greetings and emoji spams from the new viewers. She was still barely wrapping her head around the sudden raid from one of her favorite streamers of all time. Was Kazuma Kiryu really watching her stream right now? Did he actually bring his viewers to watch her?
What do you mean he knows she exists?
“Oh, wow.” Himari managed to say before attempting to clear her throat. “Hey there, newcomers. I’m… Geez, this has really took me off guard.” She let out a breathy awkward chuckle. “Erm… Okay so, hi. I’m InariHimari, but you can call me Himari or just Hima. I… damn, this is really throwing me for a loop! I’m honestly speechless, I can barely introduce myself.”
As if on cue, another chime played and Himari looked to see a different pop-up:
JudgementKazzy has donated $10.00!
“What the-“
“I heard you were trying out Pocket Circuit LIVE for the first time.” The automated voice of the Text-To-Speech played out over the stream audio. “My chatroom and I wanted to come and show our support.”
If Himari’s face wasn’t red from the embarrassment of the earlier losses, the fact that her favorite streamer is not only in her audience right now but has also donated ten dollars to show support was more than enough to turn her face as bright red as a tomato. She could only stare wide-eyed at her computer monitor (which was still displaying the post-match summary screen from the race she lost ten minutes ago) while chat continued to go wild over what was unfolding in real time. Thankfully, she was able to snap out of it in time to see a few new messages appear in chat:
JudgementKazzy: In order to win a race, you might want to customize your racer with the best components for the race you plan on doing.
JudgementKazzy: Body, wheels, etc.
JudgementKazzy: It might not seem like it, but these really do affect the outcome if you are new to the game.
JudgementKazzy: As you currently are ;)
Himari would have blushed at the playfulness that last message seemed to imply had her face not already been so flushed already. Instead, she cleared her throat and adjusted her posture for the second time that night.
“Alright, then.” She said, placing her hand on her mouse and clicking off the summary screen to open a new race.
Through the delayed speed of the stream’s chat, Kiryu gave simple and helpful advice as Himari took baby steps in customizing her car. It was ridiculous to an extent, a grown woman playing an online racing game while being instructed by a man the same age as to how to best customize the digital car in order to win the digital race. But who cared? She was having fun and so was her audience! Wasn’t that what streaming was all about?
And besides, if this was the only way for her to interact with her favorite creator, she was gonna do whatever she could to make it last as long as she possibly could.
Sure enough, taking Kiryu’s advice paid off as Himari won the next five consecutive races, earning herself a few gatcha pulls that in turn won her a few rare items that would make her race better in the future.
“Sweet!” Himari pumped her fist in the air. “That was really fun. I can see how people can get real addicted to games like this.” She then turned to look at the chat. “I think now’s a great place to stop for now. Don’t wanna get too lost into it, you know?”
Sure enough, there was a few messages from Kiryu a few moments later:
JudgementKazzy: You did great, Himari. You’re picking up on it really quick.
JudgmentKazzy: Hopefully I’ll be able to tune in for your next Pocket Circuit stream?
Himari grinned at Kiryu’s messages. “That… That would be awesome, Kiryu. You’re always welcomed here with me and my chat. Hope you have a great night!”
JudgementKazzy: Same to you! Have a great stream!

And with that, Himari logged off of Pocket Circuit LIVE for the night and moved on to play a visual novel another chat member recommended.
But the whole time, she couldn’t get rid of the lingering feeling of butterflies in her stomach.

AO3 has released their finance spending today. They collected US $207,088.91 during this donation drive. Here is a comment we have responded to if anyone was wondering on why ao3's spendings are: not much in the legal parts, promotion, and why it cannot be a "free social media like normal influences" use. If you would like to see more on their expenses, breakdowns on purchases, etc, here is the link to their: official post.
We are happy AO3 has collected more than their goal and can keep our works alive. We hope everyone enjoys their fics for the many days to come.

I can't believe it takes half a million to run this site every year (with how little improvement/development actually goes into this site)… and legal fees are a drop in the bucket compared to 'promotion/outreach'… why not just use free social media like normal influencers? You don't need to go to conventions (flights, hotels, booths, etc.).

Ao3, in a way, is a free site for fanfics and works, just like a library is with history and books. The "little improvement/development" is quite a lot. According to the actual report here, "47.2% of the OTW's expenses go towards maintaining the AO3. This includes the bulk of our server expenses—both new purchases and ongoing colocation and maintenance—website performance monitoring tools, and various systems-related licenses, as well as costs..."
The filtering system is very nice here and hard to find in other places. Legal fees would be for those lawsuits. "Legal's expenses consist of registration fees for conferences and hearings and funds set aside for legal filings if necessary.." So this is only for when it is needed. The people who work on this site dedicate much of their time to keep it running. Conventions help with the donating and spread the word of AO3's dedication to keeping fan fiction alive and protected. A "free social media" site would not work for this extensive library of literary fan works/original works.

This temple of Jewish appetizing in Soho is over the top in every way and pulls it off entirely: The lox comes on towers, the waiters yell “HOT BAGELS!” whenever there’s a fresh batch out of the oven, the breakfast sandwich costs $18 (it’s worth it, almost), and the French toast is one of the best things you can eat in NYC.
What to see and do:
New York is undoubtedly one of the most popular destinations in the world, due not only to its museums, galleries, and Broadway shows, but also to its sporting events, shopping, and food areas. If you plan to visit this city,

Before I get to the L.A. Comic-Con itself, let me discuss my 2022 in a nutshell.
In April of 2022, I developed a weird tiredness feeling that I have had for many months. I had been in and out of doctor’s offices trying to figure out what it is and was put on a waiting list for an Endocrinologist who will see me on March 9th. I also suffer from depression which has plagued my personal life for many years. I have been seeking help through a talk therapist and a medication therapist who, try as they might, haven’t been able to do too much. But I am now on a medication (Wellbutrin 300mg) that has given me a little bit of my energy back which is something. However, the amount of money I have had to fork over for these visits has been anything but cheap. My insurance covers a lot of it, but the rest of the cost is up to me.
Additionally, I had been mulling over the prospect of returning to school. My current degree wasn’t helping me as far as my career prospects were concerned and I wanted to work on a business degree to improve my chances of landing a fulfilling career. As I was a gig worker and part-time online test scorer, I didn’t have a lot of money. And at the time, I had made zero plans to make any trips for the year or do anything else that would set me back financially. So, I made the decision to take the plunge and I applied to college. I was accepted and began my studies online in the fall of 2022. I spent close to $7000 on my first semester and the spring semester so far has been roughly the same, give or take a few hundred dollars.
Now, let’s go back in time to the Jimmy Neutron panel at L.A. Comic-Con which had been formally announced on October 28th. This gave me barely a month to prepare. I was scrambling to find low-cost airfare, a reasonably-priced hotel, and transportation. I did my due diligence and researched every site I could, including popular sites like Orbitz and Expedia. The airfare was going to set me back almost $500 ($400 + fees). I was able to find a hotel on the L.A. Comic-Con website, but it would have been about $700-$800 plus a large hospitality tax. The one good thing about it is that it was on the same street as the convention center and within walking distance. Then came the dilemma of finding a cab or an Uber/Lyft to get me from the airport to the hotel and the hotel back to the airport, which would have been at least $50-$75 both ways. Add food, money for souvenirs, the actual cost of two badges for the show plus fees since I would have attended 2 out of the 3 days, plus autographs and it was going to cost me close to $2000.
By the time I had the knowledge that a reunion panel was happening, $7000 was already gone due to school. I did not have enough discretionary funds I could use as far as taking any kind of a trip was concerned.
I am in the lower-income bracket along with so many other millennials. Some of us got lucky and found good careers while others like myself have had to struggle. There are probably more articles on the Internet about the struggles many of us millennials have went through than I can count. For people like me, life has been tough.
Because I am in the low-income bracket, I have to budget a lot of the things that I do. School was a major cost factor as far as my budget for 2022 was concerned, and I knew that any little bit of money I did have left would have to go to the other bills and responsibilities I must pay for each month.
In the end, after crunching the numbers, I did not have the $2000 I would need to make the journey out to the convention, and I had to make the difficult decision of informing all of my followers that I would not be able to attend. This broke my heart more than anyone could possibly realize. I was extremely upset and sad about it.
I decided to take the initiative to finish the petition so that it could be displayed at the show if the cast wished. I spent several weeks in about 3-4 settings working 3 hours at a time to edit the fake names and duplicate signatures out of the petition as well as the odd comments and duplicate comments on the petition comment page. On November 27th, at midnight, I finished everything and sent it off to the organizer of the panel and that was that.
There were a couple of people who thought that I was going to attend which caused quite a bit of confusion. I did my best to try to clear up any misunderstandings. Even though I did explain that I wasn’t coming on my socials, I know not everyone sees these posts which I totally understand.
The weekend of the show was extremely difficult. It got to a point where I had to shut my notifications off on social media so that the pictures and other notifications bombarding me about the show wouldn’t send me spiraling into a deeper state of depression. Unfortunately, I fell apart. I had been able to keep it together for so long, but the weekend of the show, I was no longer able to remain that stoic person I always try to be. I broke down several times and felt absolutely awful. I have had many days of sleepless nights and still feel absolutely guilty. I felt like I had let people down and it hurt like hell.
While I hope this is not a one-time deal, if it ends up being that way and I missed out, all I can say is I am sorry. I am sorry that the funds were not there for me to attend. This was something that I wanted to do and had I had more advance notice I would have moved mountains to try to get the money. I wish I was one of those people who could drop everything to do something like this. But unfortunately, I am not.
In order for me to attend anything like this in the future, should that happen, I would need advance notice that is more than a month, so I have the time to prepare. Otherwise, it will be hard for me to get a plan together along with the proper funding.
Also, I will try to set aside a savings account for trips so I can be a little better prepared in this way.

When online markets first emerged, there was widespread optimism that they would be fair and competitive. Unlike physical stores, consumers would be able to choose among dozens, perhaps hundreds, of websites with simply a click. This would drive intense competition to offer the lowest price, making markets more efficient and benefiting consumers.
It is now clear that the promises of online markets have only been partially realized. A few retailers dominate online markets. In some cases, online prices are slightly lower than in physical stores, but not always.[1] Moreover, the price of a product can vary widely across online retailers. Prices on websites such as Amazon can fluctuate over the course of a day and are sometimes significantly higher than the suggested retail price. Clearly, online markets are not as competitive as some initially thought.
Retailers in online markets increasingly use pricing algorithms. Rather than a human setting prices, a computer program can quickly monitor market conditions, including behavior of rival retailers, and autonomously adjust prices in near real-time. The fact that these developments have happened in tandem—more responsive pricing behavior, along with large price differences that consumers might pay for identical products—runs counter to the initial expectations about competition in online markets. Shouldn’t more responsive pricing lead to greater competition?
This article reviews recent work examining pricing strategies of major online retailers and the potential effects of pricing algorithms. We describe how pricing algorithms can lead to higher prices in a number of ways, even if some characteristics of these algorithms may appear, at first glance, to increase competition. A key feature of many pricing algorithms is that they automatically react to rivals’ prices. Some have argued that this could facilitate collusion. However, this feature can also soften price competition when rivals do not collude. Even very simple pricing algorithms can raise prices. Finally, we discuss potential policy responses to encourage competition in online retail and other markets with pricing algorithms.
The competitive effects of algorithms are increasingly important given that online sales have surpassed $4 trillion worldwide and continue to grow rapidly. In addition to online markets, pricing algorithms are now being used to set prices for gas stations, airline tickets, hotels, entertainment, and ride sharing. The competitive effects of pricing algorithms will become only more important as they are increasingly adopted in a wide array of markets.
What is a pricing algorithm?
At a high level, a pricing algorithm is a computer program that autonomously adjusts prices based on current and past data related to demand, cost, or rivals’ prices. Initially, algorithms were used in only a few industries, such as airline ticket pricing. With the rise of online markets, there has been a sea change in terms of the number of markets affected by the adoption of algorithms, and there have been major investments to improve pricing algorithms along several dimensions.
There are a variety of hypotheses about the effects of pricing algorithms. Economists largely agree that algorithms that adjust prices based on demand conditions and/or costs have the potential to increase efficiency. However, there is growing concern that other aspects of pricing algorithms could reduce competition and increase prices.
Because pricing algorithms act without human intervention, algorithmic pricing has two key features that distinguish it from traditional methods where prices are set manually by a pricing manager or analyst. First, algorithms can allow retailers to set prices based on rules that are encoded by software. The rules can be fixed, or they can adjust over time based on, for example, machine learning protocols or human intervention. The fact that firms can commit to these rules in the short run can have important implications for competition and prices, as we discuss below.
Second, because computers can perform intensive calculations quickly, algorithms can incorporate more information and make changes faster than traditional pricing methods. Often, retailers set up their algorithms to run at regular intervals—once per day or once per hour—to update prices based on information that arrives at a high frequency. Information that may lead to a price change includes recent sales, inventories, or external features such as weather forecasts. The ability to adapt to rapidly changing conditions is what gives algorithms the potential to provide goods more efficiently than traditional pricing.
Algorithms may also take into account the prices that rival retailers charge for the same or similar products. This type of information is somewhat special, as it reflects the nature of competition rather than only supply and demand conditions. Because algorithms can perform automated responses to new information, retailers that monitor rivals’ websites can quickly respond to any price changes. This feature is commonly offered by third-party pricing tools for sellers on major platforms, and it allows even small sellers to automatically adjust prices based on competitor prices. As we describe below, high-speed automated pricing of this form can give retailers a competitive advantage.
Evidence from major online retailers
In recent work, we collect hourly data from major online retailers such as Amazon, Walmart.com, and Target.com to provide evidence on their pricing strategies. Many retailers have invested heavily in pricing technology that updates prices at high speed. We find that the most sophisticated retailers can adjust prices within an hour. Importantly, we document that the retailers with the fastest pricing also appear to have algorithms that autonomously respond to price changes by rivals. Finally, we show that there is a persistent relationship between prices and the speed that online retailers can adjust prices: The retailers with faster pricing have lower prices.[2]
Research in other settings has documented related facts. Third-party sellers on Amazon will often employ simple pricing rules such as matching or undercutting a rival.[3] Gas stations are also adopting pricing algorithms, allowing them to quickly adjust prices in response to competitors.[4] Similar evidence has also been documented for online grocery stores.[5]
Why simple pricing algorithms could raise prices
The evidence we have collected highlights how some online retailers automate the collection of rival’s prices and employ algorithms that quickly respond to rivals. This practice tends to be easier in online markets, where prices are publicly displayed and easy to access.
To see why this practice could lead to higher prices, it is helpful to start with a simple example. Consider a retailer that programs a pricing rule that quickly undercuts a rival’s price by $3. Because the rule is enforced by a computer, the retailer can tie its hands to this strategy, regardless of the price chosen by its rival. For this example, suppose the competitive price level without algorithms is $15.
One might intuitively think that a commitment to undercut a rival’s price would lead to lower prices. However, economic theory says the opposite. Why? If a slower online retailer knows that their rival is using this pricing rule, they have less incentive to lower their own price. When the slower retailer chooses the competitive price of $15, the faster rival instantly responds by setting a price of $12. The slower retailer would not be content with this arrangement, as it is losing market share to its rival even at the “competitive” price. With traditional pricing, the slower retailer may be incentivized to lower its price in response. However, because the pricing algorithm enables the faster rival to immediately respond to a price cut, the slower retailer has no incentive to respond.
Instead, the slower retailer picks the price that will maximize its profits while recognizing the response of the faster rival, i.e., a $3 price difference. In typical cases, this will lead to prices that are higher than the competitive price levels for both firms—say, $20 for the slower retailer and $17 for the faster rival. Notice that, without understanding the competitive dynamics, it might appear that the faster retailer is competing aggressively, since it has lower prices and responds quickly. However, instead of yielding lower prices, the automated response of the pricing algorithm leads to higher prices for all consumers.
In effect, a retailer wielding a high-speed pricing algorithm can threaten to quickly undercut the price of a rival. The slower rival is then forced to acquiesce and set higher prices given the threat of the rival’s automated algorithm. The faster the algorithm can respond, the less incentive the slow firm has to undercut the fast firm’s price since the gain in share (and profits) from a price cut will be short-lived.
More sophisticated algorithms
In practice, online retailers may use more complicated pricing algorithms. In some cases, pricing algorithms may lead to cycling of prices, whereby algorithms undercut rival prices until prices get so low that they reset to a higher price. Recent work examines cycling of prices in online markets and retail gasoline caused by algorithms and argues that algorithms of this form can also lead to higher prices.[6]
Currently, there is a wide variety of pricing strategies offered by algorithms, from the simple to the sophisticated. Given the variety in possible strategies, what will retailers end up using as markets evolve? We address this question by studying what rules retailers would choose to employ if all competitors had high-frequency, autonomous algorithms. We use economic theory and numerical simulations to show that retailers can choose very simple rules that yield higher prices for all retailers—even equivalent to the collusive price levels.
As discussed above, retailers may also employ algorithms that adjust the rules over time. For example, algorithms may use reinforcement learning to determine which prices yield the highest payoffs. These features may also change the nature of competition and can also lead to higher prices. One concern has been that these types of pricing algorithms may learn how to collude without human input. Simulations show that collusion can theoretically be achieved in this way.[7]
There is some debate over to what extent such collusion would happen in practice. In some respects, the algorithms that learn to collude are unsophisticated. Collusive-like outcomes arise with learning algorithms when firms are unaware that other firms may also be running pricing experiments.[8] Other work has shown that giving learning algorithms simple heuristics, such as knowing that lower prices lead to higher shares, eliminates the possibility of collusion in this context.[9]
There is also the important question of what learning rules firms would choose, knowing all of these possibilities. Would firms opt to choose a sophisticated algorithm if rival algorithms were unsophisticated? The academic literature has not yet answered this question.
How to ensure competition in markets with pricing algorithms
Currently, pricing algorithms are opaque. More transparency about the data and algorithms that are used to set prices would allow policy makers and researchers more insight into whether these algorithms are anti-competitive. As even simple pricing rules can yield prices above the competitive level despite initially appearing innocuous, policing the precise nature of algorithms and their outcomes would be extremely difficult without more information about algorithms used in practice.
Given concerns that algorithms could collude, antitrust authorities should be attentive to retailers that appear to be setting prices in unison. However, even in the absence of full collusion, pricing algorithms could reduce the incentive to lower prices if online retailers know that their rivals will instantly adjust prices in response. One approach is to limit the ability of firms to set prices based on rival’s prices while continuing to allow pricing algorithms that adjust prices based on other factors, such as shifts in demand. Enforcement of such a rule would require more transparency into the algorithms firms use to set prices, while at the same time affording the firms some intellectual property protection for innovations in how algorithms respond to other factors.
Another possibility is to limit the frequency at which firms adjust prices. If firms can only set prices once per week, for example, this would limit the consequences of firms reacting to price changes at a high frequency. A downside of such an approach is that this eliminates the ability of firms to react to rapidly changing market conditions, and firms may transfer some of this risk to consumers by increasing average prices. But if this change yields lower prices by changing the nature of competition, it may be an outcome that consumers prefer.
The possibilities discussed above focus on key features of the algorithms that can lead to higher prices: differences in pricing frequencies and automated reactions to rivals’ price changes. Other proposed policy solutions tackle the outcomes of algorithmic pricing (i.e., prices that are too high) rather than the processes, either through antitrust enforcement or price controls. These approaches have serious challenges. Traditional antitrust enforcement measures do not apply in some cases where algorithms have increased prices, including the example discussed above. Price controls are generally not supported by economists as they require the extremely difficult task of determining the “right” price. Overall, empowering a government agency to broadly set prices in markets affected by algorithms may do more harm than good.[10]
Finally, some have advocated that equipping consumers with algorithms may be one way to fight against potential anti-competitive effects of pricing algorithms.[11] In practice, consumer shopping algorithms—essentially sophisticated price-comparison tools—could work by making it easier for consumers to always choose the retailer with the lowest price. However, the success of such algorithms would require consumers to care enough about potential price differences across websites to adopt these tools in large numbers. Technological advances along these lines could change the effects of pricing algorithms in the years to come.
