ok hear me out. its the elections for 51. everything starts out fine and dandy, except cato, this time, wins!

i dont know. how. he just does anyway. still no superfluous or extravagant spendings, no bribery, but this time everyone is enamoured by his most maiorumfulness. 'lol it'll be fucking funny if-' we finally have a third party win.! take that, populares.

ser. sulpicius rufus is his junior consul.

enter (im thinking) l. vinicius, elected tribune a few months after cato. vinicius is a loud and proud caesarian, and he immediately (as tribune-elect) pulls some fucking horrid omens out of his ass that nullifies cato's and sulpicius rufus' elections. lex curiata invalid. uh-oh! sulpicius rufus is about to cause a ruckus, but cato, the most maiorumful of them all, recognises both the cunctating tactics (it happened before!) and also the eminent damage to his mossssst hoitytoity reputation if he were to be seen as being inadherent to roman customs. he gives way. the omens are legitimised. pompey and metellus scipio have to reconduct elections.

(during the time between his consul-elect status and his resignation, the catonian faction has minted some coins celebrating their de-facto leader! courtesy of his half-nephew m. junius brutus, money-spender extraordinaire.)

my wet cat girlfriend, complete with a crown wreath.! in any case the reelections are hastily conducted. vinicius (with the help of caesar) runs a nasty smear campaign on cato, who finds himself too Stoic and Dignified to care (he's not getting shit thrown at him again). public opinion changes slightly, vinicius convinces everyone cato (as seen during his barefoot tunicless praetorship) will not be an 'appropriate' consul to represent the roman republic. cicero advises cato to back down, which he does. he marginally loses out to m. claudius marcellus (a loud and proud anti-caesarian) this time, and the two consuls of the year remain as history has noted (albeit taking office a bit later than originally done).

there willll be implications of this near election on cato's imperium in the war.. he can't quite shrug it off the way he wants to. a loud and unhappy cato telling his loud and unhappy legionnaires not to be merciless and greedy!

thhis whole plot has just been a way to justify having consul designate coins for cato. my wife,

How small the world really is, and how full of crazy, random moments. I'm staying in a little village in the next valley on from Verbier (not for me the glitz and baubled-kitsch of the uber and wannabe-uber rich). La Tzamouz is quiet, quaint and yet gives easy access to the excellent ski-ing of the 4 Valleys. The other thing about European ski-ing (apart from the insane steeps) is that the majority of lifts are of the cabin-type. Most of the tome (as a solitary skier) this leads to being locked up with strangers for 10-15mins high up in the sky -- a great opportunity to observe, to eavesdrop on conversations or, most of the time, to figure out what language is being spoken. I sort of un-focus my eyes and let the experience com to me. Surprise, therefore, when through the burble and the washwhir of the lift mechanism it was English that was being spoken......and a vaguely familiar voice..........there opposite me sits the most beautiful dark-skinned woman who, I am convinced (or am I convincing myself?) I know. Now I stare and stare hard and wrack my memory banks (fast deteriorating at my advanced age)..........is it Nicky? Neil's better half (very, very true in this case.....). It is!!!

We talk, she is there with her new beau........when did we last see eachother (2007 -- bwfore I met you). Tonight I'm off for so hoitytoity cocktails as a consequence.

Who would have thought eh?

The IKON Gallery is Birmingham’s contemporary art gallery feat. an international roster in a variety of media that takes place in this wonderful little Neo-gothic former school building. Est. in 1964 by a group of artists “as an antithesis to exclusive art establishments and galleries … [it] has been formed because of the need for an accessible place where the exchange of visual ideas can become a familiar reality.” Very interesting building that inspired me to look up what Neo-gothic was and I love how they were able to preserve the exterior facade yet still able to make it present day with the neon lettering out front. The combination spoke very easily to the purpose of this little treasure in the centre of this not so London, but still metropolitan enough of a city it has its own subway line. Inside are your regular white walls and windy glass stair case that takes you up to the tower of art. Not too big but spacey enough to keep you interested for a visit. A not for profit venture and free entry, it was a win-win for the building alone. The gift shop smallish but crammed with an incredible vast selection of books on today’s shiniest art stars. Showing now is a short and sweet retrospective of the late British artist, Barry Flanagan b. 1941 - 2009. His most known work, the bronze sculptures starring the bunny were easily my favourite. Admittedly it was difficult to appreciate some of the more seemingly random stuff in there. I did read the pamphlet about the pile of sand on the floor. Remnants of a performance piece wherein sand was poured on himself to cast the shape of his body. Experiments in time on ephemeral material I could appreciate a little more after knowing more. Some of the other stuff though, mainly the tree branches leaning against the wall holding up a blank canvas or the fabric on a stick, with no explanation I could easily access, unfortunately got me thinking: Is this too hoity toity or not hoity toity enough 🤨 but still a stimulating enough time that made me want to know more ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ #cutecritic #birmingham #ikongallery #artreview #artgallery #layperson #art #artforeveryone #hoitytoity #highbrow #artcritic #centralbirmingham (at Ikon Gallery) https://www.instagram.com/p/B4BnIgKgh1b/?igshid=1o1z6s99qzmjk
