"Respect the forces of nature so you don't need rescuing."
Our local mountain rescue services in the Cumbrian Lake District and Eryri (Snowdonia), and the sea rescue service (the RNLI) on Ynys Môn (Anglesey), are all charities staffed by volunteers.
The young lad who decided not to wear his "dead man's lanyard" (that would cut off power to the engine if he fell out the boat) and the group who got into trouble on a Lake District fell (during a lockdown) both had to be rescued by people who were helping without seeking any financial compensation for their time and trouble.
The motorboat incident was years ago, when my parents were alive. The youngster fell into the sea while the boat steerage was on a hard lock. So, the boat just kept going round him in ever decreasing circles ...
I don't stand at the edge of the headland during storms because I've seen people desperately trying to help a child who died after being swept into the sea "by the seventh wave of the seventh wave".
I was taught it's safer to sail in a flotilla, rather than solo.
I don't go fell walking high up if it's icy. I don't have the skill or equipment for it.
Anytime the hike is looking like it might be too far given my health status, I sit and paint half-way up, rather than trying to make it to the top. I leave enough energy to get safely down again.
I respect nature and the weather. It's stronger than any of us.
And I appreciate that when people help others, out of the goodness of their hearts, it's a gift not a right, and should be respected by being avoided where possible, by good planning and decision making.
