Exactly one hour later...
So I saw this post by @hammerhead-art and thought; "that would be fun to draw... but no, I just posted something, I shouldn't". And then I saw it AGAIN... and I knew it was a sign.
So, despite just posting some CopperRight art, here's some MORE CopperRight art! The Toppat Chief and his watchdog:
Expectation vs. Reality
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Please excuse the weird-shaped baseball bat Right is holding in the first picture- baseball bats are surprisingly hard to draw. Maybe we can pretend he hit someone with the stick end of a metal plunger...
Bonus picture under the cut! I hesitate to call it "risqué", but I'm posting it under Keep Reading just in case; I know some people are into this kind of thing.
Tumblr media
...This would look so much cooler if the background weren't so blindingly white. I'd really like to be able to change the background color of my work into something more eyeball friendly, but my drawing process isn't much good for that sort of thing.
It'd be neat if I could figure out how to adjust the size of the picture on the post instead of leaving a bunch of white space around the art to make it more visible. This is supposed to look cool and slightly menacing, but it just feels a bit silly... oh well, what can you do?
Considering that I drew the base sketches with pen, though, I'm pretty pleased with how these came out.

tuesday again 5/7/2024
i have Got to read a book i enjoy this week or my brain will turn into something the consistency of dried tomato paste on a kitchen counter
also i have lost track of the timing and rhythm of the seasons so for the first time in a very long time there is no may starred war tuesdaypost
listening
Chapstick by COIN off my weekly recommended spotify playlist. i don’t think this song is particularly interesting or well-executed as a whole, but the lyrics
She’s a friend of mine, and an alibi
And the getaway car in overdrive, like
Hey sharpshooter, I like the way you’re moving
i think the use case for this song is a telecom company trying to get you to switch by promising some portable Bluetooth speakers for your summer parties and this is playing diagetically as we slip in and out of various summer parties, following one TV-hot woman in a sundress

reading
i am once again not sleeping well and have shoved a lot of mediocre books into my gaping maw. i have read a good fuckin chuck of the jason todd outlaws runs. i like jason todd/the red hood bc i feel a certain kinship with someone trained for an incredibly specific thing who are then thrown away the second they stop conforming. darth maul also but that’s a different post.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i have several bones to pick with writer scott lobdell. i know this was the early teens but can we chill with the misogyny for a singular page. why themes of addiction only when it is needed to fill a narrative lull? and why are you continually going to put jason in interesting situations where he might confront his trauma or grow despite his trauma and then. not have him confront his trauma or grow at all because of it??? i like snatches of the early issues of the run, when the outlaws are figuring out how to be a polycule team on the most beautiful deserted island and crashed spaceship you’ve ever seen. i liked the art in most issues and these had just enough fun flashes of character (about every other issue) to keep me reading. but im annoyed by it.
Tumblr media
i finally finished Wilkie Collins’ The Moonstone, the first physical paper book i have finished in a long time. the flaw of being the first in the english detective fiction genre is that everyone who comes after has a lot of time to perfect it. i felt the actual perpetrator was a little beyond belief and the ending was fumbled. however it was very good at sustaining my interest for like 400 pages. not my picture bc i cannot be bothered to find my copy and bother a cat, but this is the penguin edition i own. i don’t actually know if i will keep it on my shelves but maybe it’s more of a trophy of me getting back into reading physical books?
Tumblr media
Alexis Hall’s Mortal Follies also annoyed me. i do not think this author’s strong suit is in longer books. i have read previous books in two hours and change and while i found the ending here satisfying from a fairytale perspective, i did not enjoy the path we took to get there. i thought we were ending and wrapping things up at least three times, and the number of Things that happen in order to carry us on to the next Thing does not feel gleefully madcap but sort of frantically shambling. a very classic three-days time limit is introduced in the middle, it is met, and then we continue on for several months. also the author introduces the concept of shipping your friends with an equally made-up word as shipping through one of the more tiresome characters in the novel and this…cracking? chip? in the fourth wall? fucking annoyed me. it felt very out of tone with the rest of the book. surely there was a better way for this character to express that she wanted the two leads to be together
-
watching
Hammerhead (1968, dir. Miller). this is leaving tubi soon and sometimes the heart needs a silly little James Bond ripoff. had high hopes for this one bc it was rated R and the baddie was obsessed with collecting vintage erotica. i don’t really know why this is rated R. the erotica we see is almost all prints of Fine Art Nudes. there’s a lot of cleavage and undergarments and bikinis but not like. full frontal at any point. no man has their chest out except for an enterprising motorcyclist near the end.
anyway this is a deeply unserious film, as you may surmise. it’s not much fun, especially when it’s not very good at getting everyone to the next scene. Vince Edwards is kind of a cold fish, i do not know why every woman is throwing herself at him. Judy Geeson makes every scene she’s in better (there’s a very funny scene in a post office where they play both keepaway and the thimble game with an important package) but she cannot hold the whole dragging movie up by herself. god they made leading ladies fucking tiny back then. very throwable

playing
not fallow but i don’t have anything interesting to say about genshin this week. a friend started playing fnv after several months of subtle hints, i was only able to join his streams after twenty hours in and promptly let him know the inventory is sortable if you click at the top. how had he been going through his whole fucking inventory for twenty hours like that. a man singularly obsessed with both inventory management and min-maxing caps. he had like 8k caps by the time he got to Novac, taking the normal route. people sure can play games in different ways huh

Hey, I'm that guy from ao3. I was wondering, do you have a specific place you get inspo for monsters in Auckland? I'm making a DnD campain in the J&D world, aaand I kinda need help haha. Yours are like perfect <3 (Also, if you wanna join us, you can, we haven't even had our zero session and we're not playing actual DnD, I don't know how to play that, so it's ok if you don't know that, it's super easy and fun i swear, you can get a link to our discord, love you)
:0 oh shit hi !! a jdate DnD game sounds cool as fuck! im really bad at games like that tho so im gonna politely pass on that one but wish y'all the best of luck!!!
as for making monsters my inspo is Kind Of Weird? i mean i look at a lotta horror art for sure (my favourite artist atm is Trevor Henderson aka slimyswampghost on most medias, u may know him as That Guy Who Made Sirenhead but he has a lot of other fantastic art as well!), but since i dont wanna feel like im rippin other people off i actually Dont often use that as inspo! aaaand heres where its gonna get a bit weird
aside from the times i pluck a creature from my nightmares (and boy, do i have a lotta material to work with there), i usually either look into folklore (bein mindful of closed cultures like, i believe most Native American monsters are off-limits for non-Natives to write; im white as hell so i try to stick to british/irish/more recent american shit) or... i look to this one game i played Obsessively when i was in elementary/middle school: Spore (which you can find on Steam i think or their hilariously hasn't-been-updated-in-a-WHILE website). I literally played it so much I can just kind of... imagine the whole creature-creator process. I think it’s a curse. I think Todd Howard cursed me for the crime of Having No Friends.
Now, if you dont wanna download a probably-poorly-aged EA game from 2007 (i dont even know if it’d run anymore if you Just Now bought it, i remember the security measures that thing had damn near broke the game before i could even play it, thanks EA) and play through the first two stages (theyre Long) to unlock the creature creator and all the Bits for it, you can either watch people play that shit on YouTube (Monster Factory is a favourite of mine, they did I Think a 3-video run of Spore) or,
You can also do somethin that I once did as an assignment for Character Design class: go to a random animal generator, let it spit out 2-3 animals (or as many as you like, i guess, but i find 2-3 to be a Manageable number) and mash those motherfuckers together! Hell, you can even start to mix in stuff like objects/minerals/whatever the fuck too. Make something that’s a dog, hammerhead shark, and the concept of entropy. Go nuts! Here’s an example, some shit I made for that class (which mayyyyyy appear in Auckland...... perhaps. if i feel like it) :
Tumblr media
They can range from “cute” to “nightmarish” as you please! Fun fact, that spider/shark/scorpion is meant to be the size of a house. I honestly come up with a lot of messed up shit by just asking myself "What's the worst thing I can think of right now?" and then I just Go For It with whatever my brain's thrown at me. I did that with Nightmare E.T. and the fucked-up ostriches. 'Scary' is often a sort of personal thing for people, like phobias and shit, you know? Lookin inward can be pretty helpful there. Not like you have to make something of your phobias, just maybe run with something that disturbs you a little. If you press yourself for why it bothers you sometimes you can find something deeper and maybe more universal in it. I'm not talking about unearthing trauma or anything tho that likely Wouldn't Be Healthy just like... if you think spiders are creepy, ask yourself Why: is it the eyes? the legs? the venom? the way they just kinda creep up on you, like, you dont notice em til you see them? etc.
As for the monsters in Auckland while most of them aren’t gonna be references (maybe a few more in future chapters...) I will admit the “morning wood monster” is a reference to the Pokémon Trevenant; the "most fucked-up dog [Dave had] ever seen" was a creature from The Moomins just described as horribly as possible--I can't find it on the wiki anymore??? it was from the 2d animated one, though; the Shitsucker is a regular ol’ Wraith (following a specific mythos where they aren’t just Random Ghosts but beings that feed off negative emotional energy, I can't re-find which one I'm sorry lmao); and the haunted ship thing at the beginning is a vague reference to the Buzzfeed Unsolved episode on that big ass boat. Isn't directly tied to it (obviously, 'cause Buzzfeed Unsolved never has much Actual Ghost Activity, let alone one Throwin Shit At Em jhgfds), more just inspired by it.
Maybe when the thing is done, I’ll sort them all into one of three categories--references to stuff/folklore, things i had nightmares about, and things i just kind of thought up. Make a post on here about it, idk
wow! this was fuckin long. i hope at least some of that is helpful!! also im adding this here cause i just remembered some people use Spore to sculpt like?? beautiful monsters and shit?? like i Know i watched a “speedrun” of someone creating a beautiful ass dragon in it. there’s probably a whole community of people out there making epic and/or fucked up shit and you could watch them build it or just scroll through thumbnails for inspo, but i do feel like Building Stuff Yourself is best, cause it just kind of Feels Nice to make something yourself and go “hey man, look how fucked up this is ! scary, right?” and get that Success Feeling when the other guy recoils and goes "yeah man what the fuck though"

Get innocuous!
Song: Get innocuous! from the album Sound of silver by LCD Soundsystem.
Summary: After the events of Death on the stairs, Steve cheers you up by doodling on your cast.
Pairing: Female reader x Stucky
Length: 1,497 words
A/N: Apparently people wanted a sequel to Death on the stairs, so here it is. Injury, Stucky, poly relationships, bisexuals EVERYWHERE. See here for what this is all about.
***
Steve had been sent to follow up on a lead while you were still in surgery. He’d wanted to stay, to be there when you came to, but Wanda and Bucky would be there, so he’d headed off again with Thor, Clint, and Nat.
By the time he’d returned, you’d been moved to the relative comfort of your room. Bucky had been keeping Steve informed about how you were doing. Those not on missions were doing their best to care for you, keep you entertained and your spirits up.
Bucky brought you breakfast in bed before Wanda helped you wash and dress. They wheeled you around to meetings, social events, everything and anything they could do to help you feel included. Tony was tinkering with various gadgets to try to make your life easier while you healed. Peter had brought some of his Lego to build with you, a space thing from a film that Steve hadn’t seen.
He knew you were being looked after but he still felt bad for not being there. It was incredibly brave, what you’d done. The situation in the tower block would’ve been much worse if you hadn’t warned him and Wanda before the fighting started. How had he even slept through the gang gathering outside your door? His hearing was enhanced, just like Bucky’s. He should’ve heard them, been able to do something. In a way, your injury was his fault.
Even with your bedroom door shut, Steve could hear the sound of you crying and it broke his heart, adding another thick layer to his already guilty conscience. He knocked gently, and when he got no reply, he entered gingerly.
Alone and prone in the half-light. Your body trembled as you sobbed, used tissues on the floor evidence of how long you’d been crying.
“Hey,” he announced. There was no point in asking if you were alright, he already knew the answer to that.
“Whuh?” you queried, raising your head to look in Steve’s direction. Your eyes were blurry and bloodshot, nose equally red from blowing it.
“It’s ok, it’s just me,” he soothed, shutting the door with a gentle click. He handed you a fresh tissue, before sitting on the end of the bed.
You wiped your face and turned over, so you could face Steve.
“Aw, fuck’s sake,” you whined, rubbing your eyes with the heels of your hands. “I didn’t want anyone to see me like this.
“Stop rubbing your eyes,” he said, leaning forward to softly but firmly grab your wrists and pull them away from your face. “You’ll make them sore.”
You looked at him for a minute. If it wasn’t for Bucky’s stories, you’d think Steve was a man who’d never cried in his life, but you knew that beneath the all-American hero facade there was also a sensitive, creative man. You’d never seen his art, but Bucky had assured it was good, and not just because he was biased.
Or bi-assed, even.
That thought made you laugh aloud, startling Steve.
“Sorry, I just remembered something funny,” you said. Steve didn’t need to know what it was, he was just glad to see you smiling again.
“Do you want to talk about what made you cry?” he asked after a moment.
“It’s just really disheartening to be stuck here like this,” you told him, gesturing to your foot, where it sat elevated on some pillows. “Everyone is looking after me but I feel like I’m a burden to the team when they could be, should be doing other things.”
“No, you’re not a burden,” Steve noted. “I’m sorry I couldn’t be here before, but Bucky was sending me updates. He really cares about you, we all do.”
“It was such a stupid thing to do, I could’ve died.”
“But you didn’t. Sometimes, we all have to take risks. Think how much worse it would’ve been if you’d stayed up there with no weapon or protection.”
They’d have shot you without hesitation, a broken ankle seemed a small price to pay in comparison.
“I guess,” you told Steve with a shrug.
“What you did was really brave. You gave us a few seconds more warning than we would’ve had. We’re all so proud of you. Here,” he said, opening up something on his phone and it to you. “I probably shouldn’t be showing this to you, but Buck’s such a softie.”
Looking at the screen, you could see it was a thread of messages between Steve and Bucky. Or, more accurately, several messages from Bucky and the occasional one from Steve.
Y/N’s such an amazing and strong lady! Her dedication is immense and I am super proud of her! Without the serum to help me heal, I don’t know if I could’ve done what she did.
Here’s our girl wheeling herself around - so proud and happy! Docs are really pleased Y/N’s healing so well, so proud of her progress.
She makes me so proud, every day. She is so much stronger than I ever could be. We are so blessed to have her in our family.
“Steve, you’re gonna make me cry again,” you said, handing the phone back to him.
“I know Buck’s not the only one who’s proud of you. This is just a temporary break… sorry, poor choice of words, but you know what I mean. You’ll be out in the field with us again in no time.”
“But what if I’m not?”
“There’s always a space for you on our team,” Steve reassured you.
It was hard to imagine being out there again. Just being able to walk was still weeks away, if not months. Even if you did fully recover, would you just freeze when the moment came to make a decision?
“I’m scared,” you admitted.
“That’s perfectly understandable.”
“Not just about my recovery or my career,” you clarified, “but about what dating Bucky might mean.”
“Ah,” said Steve. “You have my blessing, I’m sure he’s told you that.”
“I know, I just wouldn’t want you to feel left out.”
“I don’t have to be.”
Did Steve just suggest what you think he did?
“Pardon?” you asked.
“I don’t have to be left out. If you wanted, I’d be happy to join in. Or date you separately. Very happy, but only if it was something you wanted too.”
“Did they… did they change my meds again? Up my dosage?”
“No,” Steve chuckled. “I’m serious. Although, I’m sure you can understand there’d be a need for a certain level of discretion, especially in public.”
You nodded mutely, too stunned to say anything. It was new territory for Steve, too, but he shared everything else in his life with Bucky, why not you as well?
Glancing down at your cast, he was surprised to realise your cast was completely bare.
“It’s not my usual medium, but would you like me to grab a pen and make this leg as beautiful as your other one?” he suggested.
“Sure,” you smiled at him.
You and Steve always date the same people? You sent Bucky a quick message while Steve went back to his room.
No, only the ones with broken limbs - especially if they’re pretty, came the reply.
Shit, better hope Wanda doesn’t break a wrist or something.
I think you’re safe, doll. She doesn’t seem to like her men completely human.
And you two are? You’re old enough to be my great-grandfathers.
Hey! Play nice or I’ll steal your wheelchair ;-)
Steve burst in, brandishing a gold Sharpie.
“I think that’s why nobody’s doodled on it, they don’t have a pen that’ll show up on such a dark cast,” he commented. “Anything you want me to?”
“I’ll leave it to your judgment.”
*** It took Steve several hours, you had to keep turning over for him, but eventually, he finished it. He’d drawn anthropomorphic versions of the team, with gaps filled with intricate flowers and patterns. There was a replica of the Captain America monkey doodle he kept on his desk. Sam and Clint had become a falcon and hawk, fighting over crumbs being thrown on the ground by spider versions of Nat and Peter. Tony had become Tony Stork, carrying Vision, there was Goose Banner in his lab, Thor was a hammerhead shark with Mjölnir between his teeth… there were so many wonderful little doodles all over your leg, but your personal favourite was Bucky as a cute little bear, holding a heart with yours, his, and Steve’s initials on it.
“Let me send him a photo,” Steve said with a smirk.
It didn’t take long until you heard Bucky thundering along the corridor, bursting into your room with such force that the door bounced back off the wall.
“Listen here, you punk,” he shouted, pointing a vibranium finger at Steve, “I am not a cute little bear.”
“That’s not what the guy at that club in Berlin said,” Steve answered, trying not to laugh.
This was going to be fun.

here is some nice and wonderful art of Angel and Ignis  http://damienrouge.tumblr.com/post/161853302372/commission-for-the-winner-of-my-lottery
Buy me a coffee? http://ko-fi.com/A5101UJQ
The day of the singing and the day of the wedding came to fast. Angel said her goodbyes and wished them all good luck. And prayed to six that they would be okay.
‘Shiva watch over them.’ She mentally prays watching them leave in the regalia. Everyone in the place was tense. Not, that Angel blamed them, the empire made everyone nervous. She had just got done with her shift and was looking for Cor, she found in the hall talking to glaive, so she waited, by leaning up against the nearest wall. Cor was talking to Nyx, but he knew she was behind him.
“Going to hold your peace?” Cor asks telling Nyx goodbye.
“Don’t know what you’re talking about.” She tells him with a shrug.
Cor rolled his eyes and stood in front of Angel she looked nervous and scared, “Of course you don’t. Why did you choose to stay behind then?”
“You know why.”
“You’re against the wedding and couldn’t hold your tongue if you went.” He says with a knowing smirk.
“I’m not against the wedding I am against the idea of them being married. They haven’t seen each other in twelve count it twelve years. If you’re going to marry someone make sure you and the person have chemistry.” She bitterly tells him.
Cor smirked, “So like you Ignis.” Angel gave him a death glare, “Don’t give me that look. We both know that you’ve been pinning after Ignis for the last five years.” As he turned on his heel to leave her to stew, oh how he loved to poke fun of his daughter.
“I. DO. NOT. PIN!” Angel hisses, “What is with you and Prompto thinking that I am pinning.” She asks catching up to him.
“I just know.” Was his short and sweet answer. Angel let out a sigh.
“Dad, I didn’t come here to talk about this. I was wondering if I go to the library to draw.” She whispers rubbing her arm.
“You finished your rounds?”
“Yes, sir.” Cor could tell she needed to vent.
“Be in the throne room an hour before the singing.” He orders.
“Yes, dad.” She smiles leaving. Cor didn’t blame her. She was as nervous as the rest of them. Drawing was her stress relief. And without Prompto and others here she was more on edge. He hopped that tonight went as planned. He prayed that the boys were doing okay.
In the library, Angel pulled out her phone. She found the photo and sent it out as a mass text to some of her contacts. All she asked was they look for them. With that done, she walked to back of the room and started to draw.
Meanwhile in the desert outside of Hammerhead. Said boys were in the middle of fight with some sabertusks. And looking for a hunter named Dave. With the last of the monster dead, Dave limped out and sat down on the steps of the old shack.
“Are you okay?” Prompto asks kneeling down in front of Dave, the dog tags around his neck shinning in the sun. “Hey Iggy do, we have a spare potion we give him?”
“Of course.” As the advisor dug out a potion.
“Thank you kindly,” As Dave drank the potion and stared at the dog tags around Prompto neck the crest on the back was a dead giveaway as to whose tag they were, “How in the hell did you get your hands-on Angel’s dog tags?”
“What?” Prompto and the others asked confused.
“The tags your wearing, they belong to a fellow hunter, her name’s Angel.” Dave explains.
“She wouldn’t happen to be about 5’6 with dark brown hair and always wearing sunglasses?” Gladio asks hoping it wasn’t the same girl.
“That’s her, but that doesn’t answer my question.”
“She gave them to me last night, said if we were in trouble to just show them.” Ignis explains. Dave let out a hun that did sound like Angel,
“Not sure how you boys know her, but those are her tags. She’s one of the best hunters I have the pleasure of knowing bite of bitch. But she gets the job done. Might have been worried for you boys.”
“Worried about us? We can take of ourselves.” Noctis mutters kicking the ground.
“Sure, you can. Look Angel holds respect with a lot of us hunters and the tipsters, just having those tags, means something. Take care as not lose them.”
“We won’t I swear.”
“Good now how about helping me a with a hunt?” And that was how the boys got themselves there first hunt. The dualhorn wasn’t that bad a hunt, and with it dead they went back to Hammerhead. Where Cindy greeted them.
“Thanks a lot for helping us out.” She says with a smile.
“It was our pleasure, is the car ready?” Ignis asks spotting the car by the gas pumps looking washed and waxed.
“Yup paw-paw fixed her right up.” Cindy paused and bite her lip, “Listen Prompto do know anything about those tags your wearing?”
“Yea, they belong to my sister.” He answers with a smile. Cindy smiled,
“They belong to a hunter who respected by a lot of folks. If you run into any trouble just say her name and you should be fine. In fact, I need your help running a package for me on your way to the ferry.”
“Of course, you do.” Noctis says with annoyance in voice but with a smile on his lips.
“It ain’t nothing bad.” With the package in the trunk they were off to get Noctis married.
End of line

Artist prompt anon here: yeah maybe they could meet at the next rest stop and one of the boys (prompto?) is awed by the art and kinda falls for them?
So I hope you don’t mind that I didn’t get into romance yet?
I was going to, but this was 3 pages long and it’s 1am.
-Alyssa
(Anyways, if you want more send in another ask with details for the next chapter maybe?
The Chocobo post was your next stop, as you weren’t entirely sure why you couldn’t rent any- and walking could only get you so far. Ever since the fall of Insomnia you didn’t have anywhere to go, you were just grateful you had left the crown city when you had. Your parents had sent you to visit your aunt as she was in the hospital, with her last week to live finally running out. You had been much closer to your aunt than you had ever been to your parents- but you had lost everything within the course of a week.
You weren’t really sure where you were headed anymore, you had nothing but a scrapbook some pencils and the pack on your back. The pack had a week’s worth of clothes originally packed for your visit- each pair was growing more run down with each use but you hadn’t the gil to spare. There was no one left you knew- your mother and father were gone, and your aunt had passed the day after Insomnia fell.
The past two weeks you had spent wandering from place to place, hope low and morale even lower when you had spotted them behind you in the dinner behind you. Nifilheim claimed him dead, though you could see as clear as day that prince Noctis was right in front of you sat beside his ‘shield’ Gladiolus Amicita. He had went to highschool with you with the blond, Prompto, but you doubted they had any recollection. You tended to ignore them.
Something inside you sparked when you had seen the four boys- the fourth someone you’d never seen before- and you couldn’t help but sketch them all after you had finished your meal. As soon as you were finished you quickly became flustered, dropping your bills and a generous tip on the tabe before ducking back out onto the streets of Duscae. You don’t look back as you slip back into the worn down dessert outside Hammerhead, the walk to Wiz Chocobo post may take at least four days on foot, but you haven’t the luxury of a car- and you still couldn’t rent Chocobos.
Every rustling of bushes sends your hand to the holster strapped to your hip- you didn’t have the best shot but it was usually enough to keep most lower level daemons away. You usually stuck to the side of the road since the further you strayed the more likely you’d get lost- or end up surrounded. This way was safer for you, even as the cars sped past, sending your hair flying in every direction as you walk. Your mind still lingers back to the dinner as you walk, smile on your face as you imagine the confusion you must have stirred, giggling as you remember one of the ultimately confused expressions the prince had pulled in on of your math classes. Humming a generic beat you had heard while sitting in the dinner, you try to keep upbeat as you nearly skip down the road.
You’ve probably been like this for twenty minutes when a car pulls in front of you, though it’s not one you’re used to seeing. You haven’t seen a convertible like this one since Insomnia, and when the passengers hop out it hits you like a train.
You know who the car belongs to.
“Do you need a ride?” the blond had hopped out first out of all of the boys, jogging over to you faster than the others could even open their doors. Oh Prompto, you remember when you used to have a crush on the awkward boy before you. You catch yourself grimacing as you step back, so much for being allusive.
“Ah- no, I can walk,” you assure, raising your hands in an attempt to make yourself seem small in comparison to these guys- not that you weren’t, just in a ‘I mean no harm’ manner. The other guys slowly round up, joining Prompto’s side and staring you down in unison with a shared silent scrutiny.
“It’s dangerous at night miss,” the bespectacled man insists with a nod from the brunette beside him, “At least let us drive you to the next outpost.”
With a sigh your eyes drop, scratching at the top of your head as you try to push away the nagging anxiety as the sun dips not too far off. They were right, and you knew that, but you still felt a slim tinge of guilt. You didn’t have anything to offer in return, pockets empty as you gaze over at their car. Your legs ached dully, but you still felt it best not to intrude- you already felt like a nuisance for interrupting their drive.
“You won’t owe us anything,” Noctis’ voice pulls you from your thoughts and you jump slightly in surprise as your meet his eyes, “We’ve got room for one more- and it gives Gladio a chance to fit up front for once.” The muscled man grins, winking to the Prince as one of his hands rests soundly against his hip.
“You’re sure? Just to the next outpost?” You were a bit hesitant, but not as much as you would be if the crowned prince, turned king, hadn’t offered after his friends had so readily.
“That’s the deal, honey.” Gladio beams, winking to you. Ignoring him, you face the man with glasses on his face who nods to you in conformation. After a moment of silence you slowly nod.
“Awesome!” Prompto grins, almost appearing giddy, “I’ll sit between you and Noct so he doesn’t fall asleep on your shoulder.”
“Hey- I wouldn’t fall asleep on their shoulder.” Noctis grumbles following after you all as Ignis takes the lead, Prompto slowly leading you to the car.
As the engine revs back to life with a small hum you can’t help but fully feel the burn in your calves. You had been walking nonstop for a day now, slowly snacking on a few chips you had stashed in your bag along with 3 or 4 water bottles. Relief fills you as the car slowly rolls from its parking spot, head falling back against the leather of the seat as you relax your muscles for what feels like the first time in an eternity. You pack sits just atop your feet, in quick access in case of emergency, or if you felt the need to run from these guys. They were quite intimidating, but the car felt nice with the semi-quiet peace that settled over it.
“So, what’s in your bag?” Prompto inquires, turning in his seat between you and Noct to gauge your reaction. As if on instinct the mention of the object into your arms, cuddling it close to your chest to protect its contents from his prying eyes. He lets out a chuckle, throwing his hands up in a form of surrender as you scoot back, only letting your guard drop when he lets out a small chuckle and shakes his head. “Hey, it’s cool. You don’t have to say.”
“…Sorry, it’s just all I have.” You relate, relaxing once more. “I have some clothes and other personal stuff in here.” You explain not mentioning the presence of your sketchbook.
“Did you run away?” Gladiolus raises eyebrow as he turns to glance back at you.
“What? No, I just-,” you sigh rather loudly in discontent, “I just lost everything when Insomnia fell, and my aunt died the day after.”
“You were there? When Insomnia fell?” Noctis’s distressed voice interrupts the tension that had grown, your eyes drift to him with deep seated sadness swimming in your retinas. He seemed so distressed, so lost.
“No, I was in Lestallum, my parents sent me to visit my aunt because it was her last week to live and they didn’t want her to be alone.” Now you were alone, utterly so. All you had done was show kindness, and the Astrals repaid you like this. All you wanted to do was find a quiet corner and sketch out your sadness.
“What were you doing on the side of the road?” Ignis, as you had learned, chimes in.
“I was looking for something to keep me going.”
“Did you find it?” Prompto asks, curiosity pouring out of him.
“I mean, I ran into the prince and his friends- twice now.”
“Twice?” Noctis raises an eyebrow.
“Lets just say you all look better in person than I could do justice with a pencil and paper.”

off the rack #1166
Monday, June 12, 2017
Took a new fishing buddy out to the lake yesterday morning and it was so windy we were blown off the lake for real. Not a great way to impress a new friend.
Penny and I saw the Wonder Woman movie and both of us enjoyed it very much. I particularly liked the fight choreography and the use of slow motion. Go see it.
Star Wars: Darth Vader #1 - Charles Soule (writer) Giuseppe Camuncoli (pencils) Cam Smith (inks) David Curiel (colours) VC's Joe Caramagna (letters). The ever popular dark lord of the Sith is back on the racks in a new story that takes place soon after the almost dead Anakin Skywalker gets his copyrighted black armour. I was very impressed with the art and did not quite recognise Giuseppe Camuncoli's style right away. I think David Curiel's colours made a big difference. Giuseppe's art looked different when he was drawing Amazing Spider-Man. This art looks nicer. I'm going to read the rest of this story to see how Vader gets his light sabre. The back-up story by Chris Eliopoulos (writer & art) and Jordie Bellaire (colours) shows what a bad boss Vader is. I wouldn't want to work for the guy.
Superman #24 - Patrick Gleason & Peter J. Tomasi (writers) Doug Mahnke & Patrick Gleason (pencils) Jaime Mendoza, Mick Gray, Joe Prado & Doug Mahnke (inks) Wil Quintana, John Kalisz & Hi-Fi (colours) Rob Leigh (letters). Part 5 of "Black Dawn" reveals Manchester Black's evil plan. Can young Jonathan Kent fight against the villain's control? You better believe it baby, but not yet.
The Divided States of Hysteria #1 - Howard Chaykin (writer & art) Jesus Aburtov (colours) Ken Bruzenak (letters). One look at the burka on the cover and I thought to myself "hoo boy, here comes Howie with another controversial comic book that's going to rile up folks". A quick flip through the pages inside confirmed my suspicions. This is like the new TV show Designated Survivor but with a lot more sex and violence ala Howard Chaykin. Howie always knows how to stir up poop but his stories are never stinkers. There are things in here that some fans will find offensive so please be warned. One of the coolest things about this debut was the essay in the back by letterer Ken Bruzenak. Read it for some insight to his craft.
Spider-Man/Deadpool #18 - Joe Kelly (writer) Ed McGuinness (pencils) Mark Morales & Jay Leisten (inks) Jason Keith (colours) VC's Joe Sabino (letters). Well, that's it. The battle for Peter Parker's soul ends with Mephisto getting a big surprise. I liked Joe and Ed's run on this book. They gave Wade a lot more depth than other creative teams and that made me stick around. I will see what the next team has to offer now.
Batman #24 - Tom King (writer) Bruce & Selina: David Finch (pencils) Danny Miki (inks), Batman & Gotham Girl: Clay Mann (pencils) Seth Mann (inks), Jordie Bellaire (colours) Deron Bennett (letters). SPOILER ALERT! Who did it better: The Big Bang Theory or this issue of Batman? The chemistry between Batman and Catwoman has always been an interesting aspect of the two characters and now we will see how combustible it is.
Paper Girls #15 - Brian K. Vaughn (writer) Cliff Chiang (art) Matthew Wilson (colours) Jared K. Fletcher (letters). It's another great cliffhanger in this season finale as time shifts again for the girls. The next issue won't hit the racks until October.
Doctor Strange #20 - Jason Aaron (writer) Chris Bachalo & Kevin Nowlan (art & colours) Al Vey, John Livesay, Tim Townsend, Jaime Mendoza, Victor Olazaba & Kevin Nowlan (inks) VC's Cory Petit (letters). This is the special giant sized grand finale of Jason's run on this title. It sets things up for the new creative team of Dennis Hopeless (writer) and Niko Henrichon (art) with a major cast change that will be sure to surprise you. I look forward to seeing what Chris Bachalo will draw next. If you want to check out other like Jason Aaron books, I highly recommend The Mighty Thor.
Doctor Strange #21 - Dennis Hopeless (writer) Niko Henrichon (art & colours) VC's Cory Petit (letters). I hope that this isn't indicative of the calibre of work that Dennis and Niko are going to putting into this series. I was not impressed but maybe it's because this is a Secret Empire tie-in and Stephen is teamed up with other heroes. I'm going to bench this until after Secret Empire is over and see if the Doctor's solo adventures are an improvement.
Riverdale #3 - James DeWille (writer) Joe Eisma (art) Andre Szymanowicz (colours) Janice Chiang (letters). Okay, that's it. I can't reconcile the TV versions of the Archie Gang with what I know them to be from decades of reading Archie comic books. Plus the fact that I had to Google TBH to find out what it means. One of my pet peeves is using the cliché TBH when talking to someone. I am tuning this book out.
Champions #9 - Mark Waid (writer) Humberto Ramos (pencils) Victor Olazaba (inks) Edgar Delgado (colours) VC's Clayton Cowles (letters). Speculator Alert: the first appearance of the Red Locust is in this issue. I think she is going to be a star. Buy multiple copies, bag and board them and keep them for about thirty years. By 2050 paper will be so rare that every old comic book will be worth thousands of dollars. No, seriously, Red Locust is a fun new hero and she teams up with my favourite Champion, Viv Vision, in her debut.
Jessica Jones #9 - Brian Michael Bendis (writer) Michael Gaydos (art) Matt Hollingsworth (colours) VC's Cory Petit (letters). Something happens in this issue that made me very happy and then something else happens that made me go argh. I want to know what happens next so bad right now.
Amazing Spider-Man #28 - Dan Slott (writer) Stuart Immonen (pencils) Wade von Grawbadger (inks) Marte Gracia & Andres Mossa (colours) VC's Joe Caramagna (letters). The finale to "The Osborn Identity" has Peter and Norman beating the poop out of each other. I'm sure you can guess who wins.
The Unstoppable Wasp #6 - Jeremy Whitley (writer) Elsa Charretier (art) Megan Wilson (colours) VC's Joe Caramagna (letters). If you can believe teenagers doing delicate brain surgery then you'll love this issue. Yes, some plot devices in comic books can be vary far fetched but that's what makes them fun.
Spider-Man #17 - Brian Michael Bendis (writer) Oscar Bazaldua (art) Justin Ponsor (colours) VC's Cory Petit (letters). It's Miles versus Hammerhead and the kid gets schooled in the art of street fighting. Hey Marvel, it ruins the suspense when the next issue page shows Miles fighting the Black Cat. Just sayin'.
