Rewatching Pacific Rim right now, and there's this tiny moment between Mako and Raleigh that I really love

Toward the beginning of the movie, before any of the main action, Mako is showing Raleigh around the shatterdome, introducing him to the newly-renovated Gipsy Danger

Directly after this, Mako shows Raleigh to his quarters and the two of them have this conversation:

They talk a little more, Mako reveals her amazing simulator score, but also confirms that she is not one of the pilot candidates. They then discuss Raleigh's abilities. He asks Mako for her opinion - she thinks he is skilled but too unpredictable and reckless. She ends with this:

Raleigh thanks Mako for her honestly and says she may be right. Then goes on to say this:

And the tiny detail in this scene that drives me crazy is right here

He says when. Not if, when. Mako has just explicitly confirmed that Marshal Pentecost is not considering her for Jaeger pilot. It has already been established at this point that there are only 4 Jaegers left anyway, and that the program is nearing its end, one way or another. In all likelihood, they have very little time left until the end of the whole damn world. Hell, Mako herself just criticized Raleigh, and he could very well wish to get back at her for that, were he a different person. AND YET, despite all of that, he says when. Raleigh has faith in Mako from the very, very beginning, before they even drift together, before he even sees her fight.

And that drives me crazy! I love their relationship so much

Bane Perez Identity V Art

Slowly I’ll begin posting over my art to Tumblr, so I’ll start with Bane! I did quite a lot of him over this year and the last 😅

When I saw the Nymph Awards artwork had the characters in fancy dress, I knew I needed to edit Bane into it 😭

This one was for Homestuck day...

These next few ones are part of a series of drawings I attempted to do daily in May! I got hit by artblock halfway through, though...

Day 1 I decided to draw him while complying more to his canon design

Day 2 I did him as a noir movie style detective

Day 3 I decided to draw my old sona and Bane looking at a Taintacle from the Thaumcraft mod, because I had been playing the Brightfall modpack at the time 😅

Day 4 I mixed a visual novel screenshot style with the IDV manor diary text style

For day 7 I drew him playing the violin! I like to think either Burke taught him or he taught Burke

Day 8 I drew him as a skateboarder because why not

Day 9 I drew an Icon of him to use for a Bane themed bot I run 🥺

Day 10 happened to fall on both Maid Day and Aesop’s birthday, so I drew both of them in suitvests... This also happened to be the last day I made, as the artblock had set in 😔

Victor having one-sided feelings for Bane is a very funny concept and I need y’all to see the vision

had a fight with a partner yesterday where I was completely in the wrong, so today when we met up again to discuss it, I bought flowers (one reddish rose, one white blossom, two blue blossoms) beforehand

and presented it with the rest of my apology, in an embarrassed monotone, because by all accounts this should not work to affect his emotions at all, and I was doing this in a kind of "hopefully this alien ritual works to convey my earnestness because I don't have a lot of additional vectors for it... sorry if you perceive it as a ridiculous and ineffective bit of bribery" way

the presence or absence of flowers seems orthogonal to my internal state (e.g. contrition, probability of future improvement). they're not a useful gift. they're not zero signal of caring, but it's a low barrier to entry signal. getting flowers is not difficult or very expensive

but he said it worked! I grilled him about it. here are my findings.

he said that the flowers reduced his anger to 60% of initial anger when he walked in through the door

I asked whether more flowers would have worked better. he said a full bouquet (probably 20 flowers?) would have been noticeably better, but the curve goes flat after that.

I asked him how much 20 flowers would have reduced his anger, and he said to 45%. so here's a graph extrapolation (that does not account for non-flower factors like the quality of the apology)
