5 Upcoming Artists to look for in the month of September (9/12/2022) - Rose
Tumblr media
(BIAS: I've worked with Lilith on several songs.)
Buffalo Producer, Lilith 2 (she/her) is future of spacey emo rap.
Lilith is the frontwoman of psyouredead. but you shouldn't be sleeping on her solo stuff. I don't really like to compare people to others and she is all original but Lilith will be the next 6dogs. With the minimal spacey production she hearkens back to an era of soundcloud long lost with time. She works with what little she has but with big results. She is the next wave of emo rap. Ghost may well be your favorite tape of the year. (mine too)
FFO: 6dogs, Lil Peep, and kaiyko
Stream - Ghost:
(BIAS: I'm working with Breezy on a future song.)
DMV Musician Breezy Supreme (he/him) and his backing band are the future of heavier pop punk.
Tumblr media
Breezy is proving that rock, punk, and metal is and has and always be a part of black culture. originally from the DMV rap and DC hardcore scene, Breezy departed from rap and DC hardcore a little bit, Breezy got a band of friends to transition to the pop punk scene. Obviously unlike many of his peers he comes from the actual pop punk scene and brings a more mature perspective. Seeing as most pop punk artists talk about the same topics of negativity of depression and drugs over and over. Breezy and his backing band give a really MORE positive perspective, Breezy has been often critical of the alternative scene's perspective on lyrical and subject matter. Often being critical of the Drug fueled hedonistic "Rockstar" Lifestyle that many rappers and musicians in the alt scene have. This I feel will be a breath of fresh air for some.
FFO: Bad Brains, Good Charlotte, and DC Gogo and Hardcore
Stream - Thank You Catherine Obvious:
Canadian based Maryland Singer/Songwriter Lane (she/her) will be your new favorite folk singer.
Tumblr media
I love the romanticism and heartbreak of Lane's music. The genuine heartbreak, in her voice is strangely Intoxicating and haunting. I love passion in her voice. I love her songwriting too. She can make even the most vague concepts appear concrete before your eyes. She may have only three tracks out right now but She has an Album out on the way.
FFO: Pheobe Bridgers, Bjork and Field Medic.
Stream - les loups rôdent ici
Self Proclaimed Party-violence and Atlanta Pop Music based band: The Callous Daoboys, are the future of Scenegrind and Scene Mathcore Revival
Tumblr media
This is the most fun and batshit scene music I've ever heard. Whether that be because of the scene staple of long and or weird titles of maybe totally serious songs IE ("field sobriety practice" and "What Is Delicious? Who Swarms?") or that Songs have excellent electric violin accompaniment by Amber Christman. Or the crazy ass intricate music videos directed by Grant Butler. ALSO THE MUSIC. GOOD GOD THE MUSIC. Every note seems like a part in a well oiled machine. The Callous Daoboys have definitely earned the title of one of the best Bands right now period.
FFO: Big Money CyberGrind, The Blood Brothers, Steak-sauce Mustache, and Thotcrime.
Stream - Celebrity Therapist

BIAS: I'm working with Oldphone and Have worked with Eichlers)
Eichlers (he/him) and Oldphone (They/she/he) are the Revolutionary artists of Hyperska and Hyperemo.
I'm gonna try to keep it short but I will be descriptive as possible. Emo and Ska while have been popular have never really gotten the mainstream or underground love they deserved in a while. Hyperpop is the culmination of nostalgic pop as both parody and genuine love for a more mature but equally fun experience. Emo and ska can really be in that group. ska and emo has matured. People never just could see that. So why don't we take these themes and mash them together. Eichlers w/hyperska fills this mature theme in ska. and Oldphone fills that quota for emo for me. The cliche of Pitched up vocals while a staple of hyperpop (mostly as a issue for vocal dysphoria) I feel is overlooked in its meaning and is more of a void style thing as to say "thats what we've always done". Really used with no merit. I feel artists like oldphone and eichlers both use these vocals in there songs to signify youth rather as a nostalgic theme. things rings throughout new songs w/ Oldphone like "guestroom" a song about looking at past relationships. as what could have been.
"Bow out gracefully I don't care I was dumb and I’m aware I fucked up my own life. But you don’t care, why should I fight? Every thing inside of me Is saying to to get out please But how can I hear them through this Walls were built, I don’t exist". (lyrics from guestroom)
Oldphone uses the nostalgia of emo rather to tell a long lasting emotional experience rather than a sad story. You can simply tell the same story over and over but a queer or slightly different view can help. As for eichlers his new song "ok commuter" (which while being a funny radiohead pun and nod) and "new tone" (the genre of what eichlers music is) are great examples of ska and hyperpop being used as used to invoke class consciousness and the existential hell of what capitalism causes.
Fruit of all my labor turns to Dirt dirt dirt dirt Lying if I said it didn't Hurt hurt hurt hurt Scratches on my glasses I'm a Nerd nerd nerd nerd Sitting in the break room with my Headphones in YouTube on my phone I'm watching In The Mix In a couple minutes I'll go Clock back in & pretend it didn't happen I'm gonna leave the planet Been so fucking manic lately
FFO (Eichlers): bad time records Ska, 93feetofsmoke, mom jeans, vantana row, 100 gecs, jer, Indie emo, and fishbone.
FFO (oldphone): lonely ghost records Emo, fatse, Sophie, and Algernon Cadwallader.
Stream - Goth club
Stream - Ok commuter
PLEASE CONTINUE TO SHARE THESE ARTISTS ALSO IF YOU TOOK THESE PICS DM FOR CREDIT
I love you

im tabling at dcc in like three and a half weeks -_- -_- -_- -_- -_- which will be a ton of fun once im there but dear god im out of practice
i need to figure out what to prioritise making in the next while, and be very positive affirmations voice I AM CAPABLE OF FINISHING A PIECE OF ART AND IT WILL BE FUN REEMBRACING THE FULL ARTISTIC PROCESS about it
some ideas i have areeee:
twewy print, neku shiki beat and josh all piggybacking on each other
twewy badges/keychains which would be fun but ive no idea if they'd sell </3 maybe i should just test the waters with the print this time round and see what happens. maybe it'd be smarter using the neo twewy gang but like i have zero interest LOL.
kh sora print i started ages ago when he got announced for smash that i never finished
monster high print, im not sure what though, kind of thinking about dressing them up like 80s horror final girls or smth but im not sure how to translate that properly
bratz print, general y2k fashion shite
ff7 print, the gang in 90s fits hanging out with cats, styled like an old school adoption/psa poster?
ff7 badges/keychains?
kh sorikai print, the three of them getting healed at a save point
advtime bubbline print, IVE NEEDED TO MAKE A BUBBLINE PRINT FOR GENUINELY YEARS BUT I NEVER HAVE ANY IDEAS. I STILL DONT HAVE ANY IDEAS WHATS WRONG WITH ME.
ygo print, mai and her harpie ladies. ive had this one on my vision board for yearsssss i just need to sit down and do it 💆‍♀️
mp100 print, the cast all wearing themed raincoats w umbrellas
mp100 badges? keychains?
kh sora print, him in the 100 acre wood
jennifer's body as a goosebumps cover
fnaf print, gachapon with all the animatronics in lil capsules (i made fnaf badges before but they never really sold that well, but i feel like the new game brought a lot of people back/made people really nostalgic for the series as a whole/now the kids who grew up with fnaf have disposable income to buy shit at cons?? idk um. lol)
eah print, lil cutesy cartoon versions of the gorls all hanging out on a big fairytale book. but i think eah is pushing it, i should see if the mh print has any takers before committing to eah.
advtime finn print or finn and jake, i SHOULD have another thing since all my advtime stuff is from like 2013 or smth. would LOVE to have more advtime on the table, i just need to think of smth 😔
could be a complete sellout and just do owl house because i know it'd sell..... i won't but i could.
same w she ra
same w ace attorney? though it'd be less sellouty because i do actually like aa, and i think aa stuff does REALLY well here
MAYBE sdr2? would have to rack my brain pretty hard but it could be a good shout
aw maybe i could finish my wwe 4hw print from years ago? i think it WOULDVE sold when i first started it in like 2019 but im not sure about now :/ although i think ott are actually putting on a little show at dcc this year so maybe doing a wrestling print makes a fair bit of sense. but i feel like if any nerds at a comic con are buying wrestling prints, they're gonna be aew fans. and idk if aew has any women id care enough about to make up a whole print for.....
kh girls print
the sims bella goth print
atla print, the gaang hanging out with turtle ducks or azula's girl squad
i also want to make a lil art zine of my life drawing bits from last year, i think that'd be cute :)
fart cunt faggy dyke cock pussy porn, hopefully this doesn't show up in tags

First off I just wanna say holy shiz! My last post did really good! So thank you guys for the support, liking, reblogging, following me and my content. I know it's just a basic nostalgia blog but it's really cool to know that some really like the stuff I post.
I always try to post stuff that is nostalgic to me but also stuff others might find nostalgic as well because this blog isn't just about me it's about you as well but anyways I saw this post a while back about what you searched up on YouTube as a kid and I thought hey why not do this myself! I thought it would be a neat little idea that would bring us together more and let you cool dudezzzzz get to know me so with all that said let's get to it! (Also I apologize if its absolutely cringe lol!)
1. Salad fingers
So pretty much everyone knows who and what salad fingers is we don't really have to get into it but idk how but I was just never scared of it. I remember as a child one of my friends was terrified of salad fingers yet I somehow was okay with it. I remember seeing a fake episode of it and it being a rickroll because that was sorta popular back than. I think salad fingers is pretty cool tbh its neat.
2. Wasabi Productions
This was a channel I frequented quite a bit. It had some really funny humor at the time I mean I was a kid so really anything was funny most of the time. The channel imo was just sorta random and the humor was pretty random. Humor in this era of YouTube was just something else lol.
3. Simply Spoons
Don't remember this one as much tbh but my friend at the time loved like absolutely LOVED One Direction and we would sometimes watch this channel and this person would do prank calls while trying to impersonate Harry Styles and etc. Because my friend at the time was super into 1D we checked out a lot of 1D content.
4. The Adventurous Adventures of One Direction
Another gem of 1D content was these videos. We watched them a lot everytime a new video came out we would check it out. I don't know if I have a lot to say about this channel except for that most of the content was 1D and cartoons. I think the person still posted some 1D videos so if you want to check it out I will leave links below.
5. SophieGTV
Okay imma get to it because I know what some of you guys are thinking yes I absolutely loved LPS Popular lol but actually just Sophie's stuff altogether I really liked also SHES CANADIAN LIKE ME! Not many youtubers I know are from Canada so that's really heccin cool but anyways I loved her channel as a kid if you were talking to lil me I would probably say shes my favorite YouTuber. Sophie doesn't post much anymore but I remember when EVERYONE wanted a face reveal but I hope she is doing well now. She posted one year ago but hasn't posted since.
6. LPS popular
Hunny you know it. You know it. *insert will Smith that's hot that's hot* I know i just posted that i loved this series but really though this was my YouTube childhood I was absolutely in love with this series. The tea! The tea! I can't I used to binge this series all the time I remember my old friend absolutely loved this channel. Dude I miss being a kid sometimes with a wild and wacky imagination if I were a kid again I would totally rebinge this series lol!
7. LPSHannah
This girls channel was also amazing I didn't watch her videos a lot but I definitely liked a good handful of em. Her channel was just really cool and she did a face reveal! I don't know when but its definitely surprising! She sadly stopped making videos though (just checked big sad) do to coppa but I hope what she is doing is making her really happy and all the best to her. You can now find her posting on Hannah's Haven.
8. NamanthaSuxx
I wanna say she is also Canadian but honestly I have zero clue. I used to watch her channel sometimes when she would post videos about Monster High because at the time I was into those dolls which idk for sure but I think might be coming back? Anyways i wasnt as into the channel as my friend who introduced me to Namantha's channel.
9. Jpopluvr1000
Okay idk if this persons channel was always named this but I remember looking at their channel because they made a lot of Bratz themed videos and well me I am a Bratz fan and I remember this person got I think all or almost every 10th anniversary Bratz doll and making a video on it. I was really into Bratz maybe even more than Monster High tbh like those dolls were made the year I was born. Getting real for a moment but it is crazy knowing that they will be having their 20th anniversary and I am really hyped for the new dolls like honestly I love the screening and it might even be better than the last dolls lol but anyways I loved this persons channel it was great.
10. Webkinz, LPS, Bratz and monster high pool party videos
This one is just one big group because all were under the same thing. I really liked and still like swimming and so that's probably why I liked these videos as a kid there are some I watched but can't remember the name of at the moment and YouTube doesn't let you make it so you can find old videos easily especially if you can't remember them. I did remember I watched StarryStarr33 and I think strawberry516 but I don't know about strawberry for sure.
11. Smosh
The duo Ian and Anthony were sorta like a must watch on YouTube back in the day. They were just really big and it was difficult to ignore how popular they were on the site for a while. I loved their Honey Boo Boo video and I also remember watching Ian and Anthony open things on another channel. The humor was also very YouTubery it probably wouldn't be good in professional stuff but for teens and kids at the time most of us thought it was pretty funny.
12. Bratz collection
Just like jpopluvr1000 I just really liked Bratz dolls and collections of them.
13. LPS music videos
Didn't matter what it was I loved LPS as a kid so I was willing to watch anything with them.
14. KyleMonkey
My sister showed me this weird dude who made a video with him just eating chapstick and another of him farting, spitting out grapes and just being crazy and yeah honestly idk what to say about this dude lol
15. Key of Awesome
Didn't check them out a whole lot tbh but I enjoyed some of their parodies
16. Fred
Everyone acts like the didn't watch him but you know some of them have. I liked watching his videos as a kid I remember when one of them was rated for older people for no reason. Also is it just me or did anyone else like his songs?
17. The Annoying Orange
Same deal just orange and an orange. These videos were cool I remember when Fred and him had that lil vs battle thingy you kinda just had to be there to understand the hype about the annoying orange. The humor has died out but it was a nice thing while it lasted unless you got easily annoyed.
18. Wafflepwn and the greatest freakout ever
I remember watching these videos with my friend at the time we just thought it was the most hilarious thing honestly the first video where the dude stick a remote up his butt still makes me chuckle somehow but I remember my dad being very upset when he saw I watched these videos and also having a difficult time coming to the fact that SPOILER ALERT!
It was fake all along. If people didn't know that you know these videos would be extremely problematic.
Conclusion: YouTube still felt so new and different at this time and things were growing although a lot of the humor would not fly for understandable reasons I feel like it was charming and I was very lucky I got to be on YouTube. I was very young so a lot of the channels I watched were more kiddy and childish but it felt sweet and nice. A lot of these channels were so cool and sometimes I would stay up late and watch them. With all that said I will probably make a second one of these. I was very unsure whether or not I wanted to post this because a part of me thought it would be cool but another felt like it would be cringy and wanna know what? It's both lol that's my entire conclusion this post was cool, fun and very very cringy but hey why not make another again sometimes? It will be cool to look back on and maybe if I forget something I can just come back here and remember it! Do you have anything you searched a lot as a kid? Comment below!
☆With all that said if you like what you see please give me a follow and a like I make many more posts like this☆

in the spirit of the other anon: what are some of your favorite pnf songs?? 👀
AHHH MADDY PLS YOU KNOW I LOVE MUSIC AND PHINEAS AND FERB THANK YOUUUU FOR THIS ASK.
ok so! favorite songs! I’ve got a ton so let’s just jump right to it (see what i did there? lol)
What Might Have Been
This is my FAVORITE Phineas and Ferb song, I remember when whispers about a “Phinbella duet” first started circulating mid-2012 and being SO HYPED (I was so hyped I wrote my own Phinbella duet, lollllll. maybe I’ll post it sometime). I waited literal YEARS for this song and it was VERY WORTH THE WAIT. I love the instrumentation (the strings? the guitar? the drums? the hint of Isabella’s theme at the beginning of the third verse? a A H), the lyrics are just so heartfelt and sweet and poignant (with just a hint of trademark PnF humor thrown in, lol), and the vOCALS GOOD LORD, ALYSON AND VINCENT KILLED IT. And the harmonies at the end. Bless. AYA isn’t perfect but I ADORE “What Might Have Been.” Like, they really gave us a 3 1/2 minute long song of Isabella and Phineas singing about being in love. They did that for us. Sometimes, I listen to it on a loop when I need to focus...or just because I want to listen to it. It’s truly just. The best. Ah. My heart. This song deserves more mainstream attention dANG IT.
Summer Belongs To You
This song is so uplifting and positive and the beginning is a Phinabella duet of COURSE I love it (i deeefinitely made a lil’ reference to it in a certain simile in chapter 9 of CHFIL, not sure if anyone caught that but writing it made me smile!). It always puts me in a good mood and makes me feel like I can accomplish anything. And it gets bonus points because it features Candace singing about loving her brothers!! SBTY is also one of the episodes that got me interested in the show, so this song holds a special place in my heart.
City of Love
This song ALSO holds a special place in my heart. Like, it’s so sad but it’s so good. I love Isabella, and I feel for her (and when I first heard this song I could 100% relate to her plight, LOL). This is also the first PnF song I ever downloaded! So it’s very nostalgic and special to me.
Us Against the Universe
I ADORE THIS SONGGG I ADORE IT SO MUCH OK IT’S JUST EVERYTHINGGG. It makes me feel ALL THE THINGS. It’s very similar to “Summer Belongs To You,” but rather than being rooted in nostalgia, it’s like a reminder that the characters are still as present and united as ever. A couple years ago, I never would’ve thought we’d get to hear the entire cast sing together ever again, so like....this song means the world to me. It’s a great song for 2020.
The Universe is Against Me
This is ALSO the perfect song for 2020, but in a venting way as opposed to an uplifting way like the previous song. I love the imagery in the lyrics (and like...they’re surprisingly real and raw for Phineas and Ferb) Singing along to it is so cathartic, I could listen to this one on a loop and not get tired of it.
Happy New Year
THIS SONG DESERVES TO BE ON AN ALBUM. I listen to it every new year; it really captures the feeling of New Year’s Eve and the celebration of starting over (and also. uh. I will forever associate it with Phinabella and lovely Phinabella vibes because of that scene of them dancing together).
Busted
Busted is iconic. Plain and simple. I adore it. Love the harmonies, love the vibe, I’m pretty sure this was the most listened to song on my old iPod, lol.
Somebody Gimme a Grade
I was (and am...lol) 100% the kid who had to have the best grades they could, so this song speaks to me on an emotional level. I also love the clever wordplay--like, “you wasted all my time learning how to rhyme then left me hangin’ from a treble clef!” is sUCH A GOOD LINE LIKE WHO THOUGHT OF THAT IT’S BRILLIANT. I also love getting to see Baljeet come out of his shell a bit and express himself!
Happy Evil Love Song
This is one of my go-to songs to play on the ukulele! It’s just so funny and sweet (as long as you don’t think about what happens after it, lol).
I Really Don’t Hate Christmas
THIS SONG. I LOVE IT. I love that it pokes fun at the “villains hating Christmas” trope while also subverting it! It’s just, so soooooo so great. I have a great time trying to sing it each Christmas season, LOLLLL. (because those are some FAST lyrics. how did Dan do it????)
That Christmas Feelin’
This is one of my favorite Christmas songs ever!!! It really captures the vibe and joy of the season, and I always go out of my way to play it when hanging out with people who might not know it’s from Phineas and Ferb! lol
In The Empire
One of my biggest flexes is being able to sing the entire “It’s sO NOT FAIR....” section of this song, LOLLLL. It’s just such a fun one to sing!!! (or attempt to sing....hah. Ashley has SKILLS.)
Ferb Latin
Ok, this one might seem a little random, but as a musician, I am OBSESSED with how the three melodies intersect and blend together at the end of the song!!! It sounds SO GOOD. (Plus. Phinabella duet. Yes. Are y’all detecting a pattern?)
Aerial Area Rug
So I’ll just go ahead and say PHINABELLA first because this song has MASSIVE Phinabella vibes (I mean it begins with a homage to the “do you trust me?” scene with Phineas and Isabella, that’s like pure-seratonin right there). And this song is also genuinely just so beautiful. It’s sung so well and the instrumentation is gorgeous and the lyrics are so literal but like, they work very well. (and that key change baby, I love a good key change!)
Gitchee Gitchee Goo
Gitchee Gitchee Goo means that I love you! It’s a classic, and super catchy, and totally reminds me of Phinabella even though in the context of canon that isn’t what it’s about at all😅. Also! Candace and Phineas singing and having fun together will always make me smile. I crave wholesome sibling interactions.
Thank You For Coming Along
THIS SONG MAKES ME FEEL THINGS....I really can’t think of a better send off the show could’ve had. I love how genuine it is, like a love letter to the fans, with all the references and such (I’m a sucker for fourth wall breaks, lol)! And I mean, that Phinabella moment near the end is just MAGNIFIQUE, YES, FOURTH WALL BREAK, PHINABELLA KISS REFERENCES, AND PHINEAS FLIRTING WITH ISABELLA??? WE LOVE TO SEE IT.
We’re Back
and THIS SONG. THIS SONG RIGHT HERE. I can’t think of a better re-introduction to these characters after saying goodbye to them years ago. This song really feels like a warm hug, a welcome home. The music video Disney released for it is especially wonderful because it incorporates scenes from the show!!! I always rock out to this one whenever it comes on. It’s a gift, truly. I love it. I needed this song this year!!!
Ok I could go on and on and on but this post is getting really long so I think I’d better just post it, LOL. Maybe I can make a pt. 2 sometime, LOL. Because there are plenty of other songs I love!!!
THANKS FOR THE ASK MADDY I HAD SO MUCH FUN WITH THIS!!!!!!

"angels of porn II", "uncle", "you're so cool", "rabid", "dog teeth", "poacher's pride", "mean", "runnin' free", "sweet girl", "he hit me (and it felt like a kiss)" when i say her entire discography i MEAN her entire discography in some way or another <3 nicole dollanganger anon
OKAY ANON I FINALLY DID IT I FINALLY SAT DOWN AND THOROUGHLY LISTENED TO ALL OF THESE AAAAH big apologies for the absolute ESSAY i wrote you under the cut!!
angels of porn II: aaah tbh with u i had to stop listening to this at ‘my hair is falling out again’ because it was making me feel icky and depressed ehehe BUT i looked up the lyrics and yeah i can definitely see where you’re coming from with why this might remind u of my work!!
uncle: i’ve heard this song before!!! i have no idea WHERE but i recognize it! this definitely gave me reader x touya-nii vibes especially like, the main series in general (part one for sure!! but really just the whole vibe with like that all-consuming love and the dependency reader has on him, how badly she lives to please him and receive his praise, etc)
you're so cool: (i hope to god this is a true romance reference ehehehe) OOOOH I LOVE THIS ONE i love this one i love this one so much okay so far this is my favourite out of the three i’ve listened to. absolutely adding this to both my touya-nii playlist AND my poison!dabi playlist holy shit i really love this one,,, literally do not be surprised if lyrics from this song end up as one of the titles to my pieces oh my GOD i love it
rabid: holy shit i love this one too. the entire first verse and ‘you like to play with knives and get all cut up’ and ‘no blood for you will ever be enough’ aaaaah oooh i love it so much. it also made me cry really bad for some reason??? and i’m not exactly why, idk if it’s because i feel like i’m relating so fucking hard to it or if it’s just how heartbreakingly sad her melodies are??? but she’s an incredible songwriter oh my gosh, thank you for introducing me!! i hope i can listen to this soon without crying ahahaha
dog teeth: fuck i love this one too!!! ooooh the chorus is definitely my favourite ahahaha i already have a version of dabi forming in my head that i’d LOVE to write inspired by this song eeeeee. definitely touya-nii vibes too tho!!! absolutely!! this is an absolute sidenote that has little to do with anything BUT listening to these has made me think about my three (now four i guess if we count 1950s dabi!!) versions of dabi and the fact that literally every single song so far makes me think of touya-nii is reminding me of just how fucked up i made him and just how much i LOVE that iteration i created ahahaha he has such a special place in my heart and maybe that’s another reason why these songs are making me so damn emotional???
poacher's pride: oh my god this one is DARK ahahahaha yikes but i like it!! the lyrics more than anything else but yeah, wow. i love the theme of angels in her work, really really interesting!! i also looked her up and found out she’s from southern ontario as well and YEAH this literally has such like,,,   abandoned small town ontario vibes oooh it all makes so much more sense now ahaha. it’s hard to explain, but if you’re from a small town in ontario you’ll understand what i’m talking about but like, i can VISUALIZE her songs. i can literally see parts of my town and the tinier towns up north and bits and pieces of my life as i listen to her music… that’s probably playing a really big part in why her songs keep making me fuCKING CRY too ahaha
mean: okay this one made me sob and for that reason i do not like it hahaha there’s uh like two lines in here that hit me really really hard and i probably should’ve turned it off right after that but i didn’t and that was a mistake on my part lol. beautiful song tho!! there are just a few parts of it that hit a little too close to home hahaha, but i mean—that’s truly a sign of good art, you know?? when it literally makes you THAT emotional that quickly…… i think she’s an insanely talented artist, though!!
runnin’ free: oh my god hahahaha AGAIN this is like, august in the town i grew up in. that’s what it reminds me of; sticky humid august summers in this lil farming town where nothing ever happens and all you can hear is the buzz of the cicadas. i love the chorus tho!!! so much!!!! the song as a whole makes me,,,, not exactly nostalgic because i do not miss that time of my life at all, but like,, a deep melancholy mixed with nostalgia, if that makes sense???
sweet girl: WAAAAH i love this one so much!!!! i love this one so so so much ahahah i know it’s depicting a lesbian relationship but the vibe of the song itself makes me think of poison!dabi
he hit me (and it felt like a kiss): AAAAAAH THIS ONE yes yes yes!!!!! this one is also sooooo so so poision!dabi like holy fuck 110% ahaha i added it to my playlist for him, too
AAAH apologies that i wrote you a LITERAL ESSAY on my thoughts and i’m sorry it took me a bit of time to get to this!! but i really wanted to set aside some time to solely listen to these songs n give you my thoughts (and i’m currently sick in bed so it was the perfect opportunity ahaha).
in conclusion, i loved her stuff but so much of it felt so personal (in relation to myself!!)—perhaps a little too personal and it made me extremely emotional but in an interesting way??? i’ve never encountered music that made me feel that intensely so FAST, so i’m really intrigued ahaha, and again i think a lot of it has to do with just how much her art feels like it is imbued with the essence of small town southern ontario, which i personally have a LOT of mixed feelings towards ehehe BUT ANYWAY NOW I’M RAMBLING
thank you so much anon for introducing me to such a beautiful artist, i think when i’m feeling a little better (both physically and emotionally ahaha) that i’d like to give more of her stuff a try and eventually not cry at every song, because i really do love her lyrics so much!! and i don’t think it’s necessarily a bad thing that it made me so emotional—like i said i find it soooo interesting, i can’t even describe some of the feelings her music gave me, i’m not sure words exist for them but i’d love to listen to her again and try to write them down or describe them myself—but obv i don’t want to cry every single time i listen to her!!

Fanfic Friday 3: Bmo Character spotlight
Tumblr media
Woop! It’s Friday again and you know what that means!
Now with Distant Lands coming out in less than a week on June 15th- I think now’s a good time to look at what Bmo fics there are. As there’s probably going to be a whole lot of them in a few weeks.
For character spotlights I’m going to start off with what I think is the best fanfic currently out there about this character, which will get a detailed review, and then I’ll recommend some other pieces of writing.
With that imo the best Bmo fic currently out there is: Flowers for Bmo, King of Ooo by Princeofonesingledomain on Ao3
So first off this fic is about something I personally find really interesting: Ooo 1000 years later, the world Shermey and Beth inhabit. That part of the finale was absolutely heart wrenching and the perfect way to end a series about accepting change and letting things grow. Everything in Ooo ultimately stayed just as we left it, everything stayed but it still changed.
This fic is three chapters long and opens on a strong, well written and enjoyable chapter about Shermey and Beth deciding to visit Bmo. The dialogue between these two is really good and distinctly Adventure Timely, especially in the way sadder aspects are handled.
Also the jokes are really funny! Which is perfect for a duo at the start of their adventure- Shermey and Beth are at the same point of their story as early seasons Finn and Jake were. And the humor reflects that with jokes I can imagine being in a season 1 or 2 episode.
Other little tidbits that tie nicely into the show are the little snippets we get of old Ooo - like Beth humming the food chain song as she looks for something to give Bmo, or the duo casually discussing Peppermint Butler who by the way HAS BECOME GUARDIAN OF A NIGHTOSPHERE PORTAL! There’s no boring exposition in the way we get this information, these things are just seamlessly placed in the narrative like references to old Ooo were in the episode Come Along With Me. So this fic feels like a good sequel to that episode from the get go and the second chapter only builds on this.
The second chapter focuses on Bmo and is much more melancholy, starting with Bmo sitting and staring at the clouds, thinking about how the way they change their shapes reminds them of someone? Jack? Jake? Or was it Phil? Which is a really nice example of character based description- the sort I love to see in a fanfic!
This really draws you into Bmo’s centuries old mind. It’s peaceful, but still playful. Bmo has stayed the same, but also changed.
This is also reflected in how superbly Bmo is written. Bmo is still charming and childish, they still mess around with their reflection friend football, but there’s an... age to Bmo now. A tiredness, a weariness and sense of loss that wasn’t there before. Which contrasts really well against Shermey and Beth who’s adventure is just beginning.
In general this fic made me really emotional and is a really good dive into Bmo’s character, it also features a lovely song written by Marceline for Bmo that I can totally imagine being in the show and an absolute gut punch of an ending.
I say ending in reference to the second chapter because that was originally when the fic was supposed to end, but the author graciously added an epilogue that brings together all the characters mentioned and has Bmo finally find his place in this new world, finally moving on from the past to be the friend to Shermey and Beth, a returned Bonnie and Marcy, a grown up Peppermint Butler and characters yet unmet that he was to Finn and Jake.
Staying the same, yet changing.
...You think the author’s done after writing the best Bmo fic I’ve ever read? Nope! Just as things couldn’t get any better, you find out this is part of a series and has not one, but TWO sequels! These are focused on other characters so I’m not going to review them, just list the summaries and encourage you to check them out:
Autumn Leaves -  Caught in a conflict between Sweet P. and a great returning evil, Shermy tumbles down a mountainside and meets someone who seems to know him, even though he's never seen her before. Could this be the Huntress Wizard BMO told him about?
A Grey Winter’s Bloom - How did Marceline get her wrinkles and grey hair? What happened to Simon? A night that starts as an attempted romantic evening for her and Bonnie ends up being more than Marceline ever bargained for. In BMO's house of many memories, Marceline finds Simon's glasses lying on a shelf. They remind her of a time that seems too long past to be real, but too personal to be far from her heart. Shermy, Beth and the others listen to her recount the first time she'd noticed Simon was growing old, and that there was nothing she could do to stop it.
With that another really good Bmo fic is Disk Check Error by Skyeel also on ao3.
-the super good writing of Bmo. Every line feels like it’s said by them.
This fic is a homage to Bmo’s memory storage, which by now stores some of the addest, happiest, tensest and funniest moments of Ooo’s history.
The first two memories we see are a cute Bubline fluff piece post “What Was Missing” which is Bmo at their cutest and most baby! The writing of them is in character and each piece of dialogue feels like it was taken from an actual show script. The bubbline in this is also adorable.
The second memory is equally cute- focusing on Bmo making a videogame for Finn as a birthday gift only for the Ice King to show up and for them to sort of.... collaborate? Either way it’s very sweet, Bmo is their usual childish self and the Ice King’s weird personality goes really well with theirs, meaning we get to see a sweet and playful side to Simon just as we do Bmo.
Meanwhile, the beginning and end of each segment listing Bmo’s memory storage ties them all together. This seemingly related piece of data is revealed to be the size of another memory, which Bmo has had to rip out of their hard drive to make way for new memories. And the third memory- which is actually Bmo’s present 1000 years later deals with just this special data.
Like in the first fic Bmo 1000 years later is slightly different, older than the Bmo we grew up with, something that this fic makes all the more poignant because we saw Bmo as they used to be right at the start. Bmo has two guests over and tells them a story.
Now I’m not going to spoil the emotional core of this story but I am going to tell you what I really enjoyed about the final memory.
It’s very rare for a fanfic to take full advantage of the written word as a medium and this one takes advantage of typographical features (fancy words for stuff in a text that’s visual e.g. font, punctuation etc) in a way that not only tells the story but is emotional.
All in all, like the first fanfic this one links to the core theme of Adventure Time: that even if things change, from Simon and the Ice King to Marceline throughout the seasons to the land of Ooo itself, what truly matters about these things will always stay the same. Especially when that’s love.
Some other lil Bmo fics I found enjoyable are:
A Real Boy- 7 very short 2-4 paragraph chapters detailing how Bmo wishes on an artefact Finn and Jake find to be a real boy, and ends up zapped into a parallel reality.
This has some really cool moments as well as general Bmo cuteness- plus there’s some cannon x OC ship stuff that’s always nice to see. I love fan OCs and think they’re great fun if you can’t tell by my fankid horde. This has a cute ending too. It’s very short and can easily be finished in 10 minutes.
Bmo’s Greatest Adventure - this one’s a lot longer and I haven’t fully finished it, though from what I’ve read so far it’s pretty nostalgic for early seasons Adventure Time as well as early 2010s Fanfiction. The characters are in character, Bmo is their plucky self and other than that this fic is what it says on the tin so here’s the author summary:
In the land of Ooo, before the Mushroom Wars, there was an ancient yellow computer chip held precious information about all of the secrets about rebuilding & maintain the society that was once e story was told that there will be a great computer mind to help translate and rebuild Ooo, but the chip was hidden away & So BMO's greatest adventure began.
The Treasure of two Robots - I’m a bit hesitant about reccommdending this as it’s written for the Bmo x NEPTR pairing and in it Bmo is referred to with she/her exclusively and just generally gendered as female.
While Bmo is generally interpreted to be a genderfluid character, this comes off as a little erasing of all the times they’ve used he/him and seems like the writer is trying to avoid writing, y’know, gays. Though Bmo canonnically has no sex and is referred to with a variety of gendered forms throughout the show, including he, she, m’lady and others. None of which Bmo corrects or seems uncomfortable with/has preference for, so we can assume she/her is technically fine.
So as such I can’t fault people for writing Bmo to be leaning femininely in their fics if that’s how they see the character though it does come off as straightwashing of what should be an lgbt pairing - a male and a genderfluid person’s relationship isn’t straight. But like I said, this is just my suspicions based on the year this fic were written in. It could simply be author interpretation. There’s nothing in this fic to suggest Neptr doesn’t also love Bmo when they’re a boy, and that Bmo isn’t genderfluid.
That said this is a very cute fic featuring human versions of Bmo and NEPTR that shows what NEPTR and Bmo get up to when Finn and Jake aren’t around, and Bmo’s playful nature contrasts well against NEPTR’s more reserved and meek personality so they end up working well together. Bmo encourages NEPTR to get stuck in and enjoy himself while NEPTR acts as a much needed voice of reason. It’s nice to read about Bmo having carefree fun after, y’know
Tumblr media
this.
So that’s that! I may do another one about Bmo if Distant Lands gives us as many fics as I’m hoping it will... hopefully...
See you all next week!

Welcome Back
Tumblr media
I am a card carrying geek. I was that nerd in grade school, reading comics, watching anime, and larping with his friends during recess. I’ve always loved things like books and film, mostly because my ma had a penchant for the sci-fi and we would share in her hobbies. I’ve been a fan of Doctor Who since i was a wee lil’ Smokey and had a particular fondness for Max Headroom’s shenanigans. My chosen proclivities lend themselves to alternate universes, divergent timeless, and the interdenominational doppelganger or two. What i am trying to convey, here, is that i am not stranger to the revisit of a franchise. For me, rebooting an established work or expanding a loved lore is not a transgression. I am a fan of narrative. If you can tell a unique story, it really doesn’t even have to be that good, but something creativity and compelling, i am totally on board. This isn't as difficult a feat as you'd think considering how well Hollywood can adapt international films. The Ring and The Departed are effectively remakes of their original Asian fare and those films are spectacular. Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy is the best example of this i can give. His deconstruction of the Batman mythos was one of the best cinematic and storytelling experiences I ever had. If you can take an established narrative, an established universe, and inject your own flavor into it, i am down for that, too. The Kelvin Star Trek timeline immediately comes to mind. Again, comic book guy, specifically a Spider-Man shill.
Tumblr media
While i have years worth of alternate Spider-Men in the books to pull from, i think the most concise example i can give for a layman is to think Into the Spider-Verse, only with thousands more Spider-Men and Spider-Women. That’s the world I'm broaching this subject from, where there are decades worth of stories and reboots and remakes and reimagings, basically revisits, of a character that i absolutely love. Some are great like the Ultimate Spider-Man or the world of Renew Your Vows, and some are not so great, like that version Abrams’ kid came up with. That whole story was the worst. We have actually seen a little bit of this narrative reincarnation in the Spider-Man film franchise, itself, both good and bad. If we take the very first Spider-Man films, those campy, Raimi classics, as a starting point, then we had a terrible reboot in the Amazing franchise and a rather brilliant reimagining in the MCU outings. I really like the MCU retool. Tom Holland is THE onscreen Peter Parker and you can fight me about it all day.
Tumblr media
Jurassic World and The Force Awakens are an interesting situation in the whole Revisit discourse. Both of these films are effectively reboots of the entire franchise and a whole ass remake of their initial entries. Beat for beat, theme for theme, these two films are basically the same as Jurassic Park and Episode IV, just less than they are in every conceivable fashion. Now, on paper, i should hate this but i don’t. There is a reason both of the imitations made billions for their respective franchise and that is simply nostalgia. We. as a culture, were starved for a Jurassic sequel and new Star War. When we got these movies in earnest, no one cared they were rehashes of the films that made them so important to the cultural zeitgeist. It was like seeing A New Hope and that initial outing to Isla Nublar for the first time, for a second time, but with much better effects. It had been decades since either of these movies had a proper release so we all just accepted that these were refresher courses in the lore. It was with the sequels that these things sh*t the bed so hard.
Tumblr media
Fallen Kingdom and The Last Jedi skewed so far from what these franchises were, from the rules that had been established in the preceding films, including the first in their new trilogies, that they were offensive. Legitimately offensive. Jurassic World and The Force Awakens, as flawed as they were, left their worlds in respectable places. The narratives that could be built from those starting point were incredible. That potential was palpable. Lucas, himself, said that the stories should rhyme and you see that in his six films. Familiar yet different. Nostalgic yet original. Respectful yet original. None of that was recognized in the follow-ups and that is why these two franchises are on life support. It’s sad because there was potential there. Characters introduced were compelling and narrative threads left unties, could have become something great. Instead, expectations were subverted and the world completely sh*t on in an effort to be edgy, to distance itself from the established lore. That sh*t is whack. It’s not about being a fan of the franchise or a zealous istaphobe or whatever else the Twatter mob wants to accuse people of being. It’s about bad story telling. it’s abut a complete betrayal of a decades old franchise. It’s a bout being disingenuous with the property for personal gain.
Tumblr media
I said at the beginning of this essay that i love a revisit. That’s why i went to see these sh*tty films. I also made very clear that i love storytelling. Fallen Kingdom and The Last Jedi lack in that fundamental aspect, that’s why they suck. They’ve done irreparable damage to the entire franchise and canon of these worlds that were so meticulously crafted by proper visionaries. Michael Crichton is rolling in his grave at what became of his Dinosaur Westworld and Lucas effectively bogarded his way into running Lucasfilm again after they sh*t on his legacy and that’s the thing; Legacy. These two franchises are part of American culture. They’re as revered as Apple Pie and Institutional Racism here. They’re not cash grabs or vehicles to push your politics. They’re modern fairy tales, myths, and should be respected as such. The thing is, though, i don’t believe there are actual creatives out there that have the vision to create like Crichton or Lucas anymore. Or, at least, Creatives that are willing to work within the constraints of this ridiculous studio system.
Tumblr media
Modern film studios are disgustingly risk averse. That is a problem with anything making entertainment media nowadays but it’s most egregious in Hollywood. Films like Star Wars and Alien were made in a time when budgets didn’t swell to hundreds of millions of dollars so directors had to do what he could, with what they had, and that level of imagination birthed classics. It’s rare that creators get a blank check to deliver their vision nowadays, and even rarer that what they get to make if they receive that loot, is actually good. Zack Snyder and the train wreck that is Sucker Punch demonstrates my point perfectly. the new Lucases and Camerons are rare but there are a handful of directors who carry that torch. Denis Villeneuve is an incredible visual storyteller. He has a distinct vision for the grand and manages to craft proper worlds. Blade Runner 2049 is one of the best films i have ever seen in my life but it didn’t make money because people have been conditioned to ignore great storytelling for great effects. That sh*t is why people can say to me, with a straight face, that they think Batman v. Superman is better than The Dark Knight rises. That sh*t is stupid, shut the f*ck up. Deni was given the reigns to the Dune reboot and i think this might be the film that breaks him through to the mainstream.
Tumblr media
Dune is a reboot. It looks like a revisit to the old David Lynch flick but with Deni’s penchant for the epic. This movie feels like what Jurassic World and The Force Awakens wanted to do; A respectful acknowledgment of what came before but an original take going forward. Dune is one of the greatest sci-fi novels ever written and Deni is one of the most profound visionaries in the game right now.  I have no doubt the new film is going to be fantastic. This combination is a match made in heaven, similar to Alex Garland with Annihilation or, more accurately i think, Luca Guadagnino and Suspiria. Those two films are f*cking incredible and they adapt the source material in a very, specific, manner. Annihilation is a reimagining of the book and carries its own themes and tones while the new Suspiria is a complete reinterpretation of what came before, that i believe eclipses the original. Dune looks excellent but i don’t know that it will be well received. Deni has his work cut out for him because the world of revisits is riddle with the corpses of films that couldn’t care the weight of what came before or what could have been. Still, i don’t want Hollywood to stop. As unoriginal as remaking things is, i adore a fresh set of eyes on familiar fare. There are infinite ways to tell the same story and that’s the fun of revisiting an old tale.

V Watches MagiReco - Episode 3 Review
Tumblr media
*Spoilers for Magia Record Anime Episode 3*
And so the Rena and Kaede friendship-ending plotline comes to a very satisfying conclusion! This episode actually had me in tears quite a few times (;Д;)
So many things to talk about and unpack so I’m going to try and keep it as succinct as possible >_< Starting with the most obvious: OH MY GOSH THOSE TRANSFORMATION SEQUENCES. I LOVE THEM. SO MUCH. HOLY CHEESE (♥ω♥*)
Yachiyo was the most elegant water goddess ever. True beauty right there. I have nothing else to say. Perfection. Momoko’s was super BADASS I LOVED IT omg all the flames and kicks!!! They really did a good job showcasing the duality of her tomboyish image and her gentler, “girly” side. Rena’s was like a cuter and more whimsical version of Yachiyo’s (since they have the same water theme), and I really love how the anime took the mirrors in her doppel and featured the imagery so heavily in her transformation! That last shot with the thunder was also super cool! And Iroha leaping off the building with all the feathers was so pretty *___* The bird imagery is as heavy as ever with this transformation, especially with the fact that she’s literally “flying” as she “falls” off the building. I also find it quite interesting how the cloak always comes last with a slight delay, especially with how the cloak was depicted as being almost “its own thing” before she caught up and merged with it!
All in all, these transformations were top-notch, and I love them even more than the ones we saw in Rebellion. They definitely lean more towards traditional magical girl transformations (which I personally prefer), while still retaining a decent amount of the trippy look of the Rebellion transformation style and overall PMMM aesthetic - a really good balance that encapsulates the tone of MagiReco quite well, in my opinion ^^
Okay enough rambling about transformations and onto some plot xD
Mitama finally appeared! Her voice is as Mitama as ever, and I really like the touch they had with how all her movements seem very deliberate and calculated, and very flamboyant. She gives off the impression of a very friendly and approachable person, but you can’t quite tell what she’s thinking or hiding, and get the feeling that there’s definitely more to her than meets the eye. Which is basically Mitama in a nutshell, so A+ for her portrayal. I do wish we saw her do a bit more, though, but it was only her introduction this week, so hopefully we’ll see more of her in the coming episodes :) The Mayu cameo was shorter than the Ren one, but I do like this method of “debuting” characters without shoehorning too many girls into the main plot, so I hope they keep this pattern up.
One small issue I had with the episode was the fact that they seemed to either change or gloss over the tension between Yachiyo and Momoko? This is biased because I’m a viewer who’s familiar with the game story, so seeing them getting along fine threw me off for a moment. But I guess it wouldn’t be an issue with anime-only fans, especially if they really did decide to just do away with the tension and have the two of them as perfectly amicable friends. Which is fine, too. I was just confused for a moment because of my expectations (one of the interesting things when you watch an anime with a preconception of the plot and characters) ^^;; I did like their tension and the way they made up in the game, though, so I’d be a teeny bit sad if they really did cut it, but that’s more of a personal preference, so not really an actual problem :)
Momoko’s super awkward and stiff “apology” was hilarious to watch, though xD Also, Momoko with her hair out!!! Definitely wasn’t expecting that! I thought it was supposed to show how stressed or tired she was worrying about Kaede, but no, seems like she sometimes just walks around with her hair like that. While I prefer her with the ponytail, I always appreciate it when anime (especially magical girl anime) show the characters with different hairstyles; makes things so much more realistic :3 And Mitama doing her hair was super cute, too ^^
The way they went about showing Rena’s internal struggles was really well-done. One thing I’ve always liked about PMMM is how you often get a sense of things being either “not quite right,” or you just have no idea what’s going on. I felt that in the scene with Rena watching TV in her room (Sayuki cameo!), transforming in and out of different characters. It’s strange and eerie, and it disorients you because you’re wondering what’s going on and what’s even real. But it’s a really nice kind of confusion that keeps you on edge, which PMMM is really good at, and I think it was captured very well in this episode.
I personally don’t relate to Rena’s personality or struggles at all, but for some reason she always manages to make me cry. I bawled when I read her Magical Girl Story in the game for the first time, and the little bits of it they incorporated here (much appreciated) got me sobbing as well... I really hope they don’t stop developing her character after the main five enter the scene and Team Momoko takes a backseat. There’s so much to explore with Rena, and I think they’ve done a really good job so far.
Kaede is as precious as ever, and her interactions with Rena were super sweet. I think it’s nice that Rena has a friend who’s so open and patient when she’s trying her hardest to open up and express herself well. The past two episodes really showcased the relationship dynamic between these two, including all of its strengths and weaknesses. I did, however, furrow my eyebrows slightly when they found Kaede. It’s understandable if they wanted to change the brainwashing from the game version of events, but the fact that Kaede seemed so chill and undisturbed when they found her seemed kind of weird to me, and frankly, didn’t make much sense xD I’d expect her to be a bit more scared or even traumatiised after being stuck in a place like that all alone, especially considering her timid nature xD
But the fight against the Rumour was definitely a feast for the eyes. The Rumour looked quite different from the game version, but in this case I think the creative liberty they took actually made the Rumour seem more distinct from a Witch. The barriers aren’t exactly identical in nature, the the huge winding staircases extending into the sky really go to show how large the scale of a Rumour can be. Iroha didn’t do much, but Yachiyo and Momoko had amazing teamwork; the water and fire looked amazing together! And again, I loved the use of mirrors in Rena’s attacks! It’s a unique and aesthetically interesting choice, and also helps differentiate her water-based attacks from Yachiyo’s. Kaede’s trees and leaves also looked lovely!
Backtracking a bit to the very beginning, but I wasn’t expecting Touka and Nemu to make an appearance so soon! That short scene did a pretty good job at showing the basic facets of their personalities, especially Touka’s, as well as their relationship dynamic. It was a really nice way to parallel and lead into the friendship-ending dilemma that Rena and Kaede are experiencing.
And on the topic of things I was not expecting... that Mami appearance at the very end!!! She showed up earlier here than in the game, but I think that scene provided some pretty important information that the game glossed over. Here we aren’t just told that Kyubey can’t enter Kamihama for mysterious, unknown reasons; we’re actually shown what happens when he tries. And seeing Kyubey openly asking Mami to go to Kamihama and investigate gives her a very logical reason to be there when she eventually gets introduced to the game’s main cast. But yeah, seeing Mami definitely had me feeling all nostalgic again ;___; I don’t even remember the last time I saw her, or any of the Holy Quintet  members, moving in anime form (;Д;)
Oh, and Lil Kyubey is possibly one of the world’s most adorable creatures ever and I WANT ONE AS A PET OMG (ᗒᗨᗕ)
This week’s review turned out a lot longer than the ones in the past weeks (and I just keep jumping all over the place between topics and not even going in chronological order) ^^;; Probably because I just had too much to scream about because of the transformation sequences ^3^ So I’ll quickly end this now by saying how excited I am to finally see the mightiest magical girl Tsuruno Yui debut next week!!! (*≧▽≦)

No. 6 Collaborations Project: A review!
It’s been a week since this fabulous album has dropped into our hands. Click “Keep reading to hear my thoughts on each track!
Track 1. Beautiful People Khalid ★★★★ Favorite Lyric: You look stunning dear/So don’t ask that question here
Thoughts/Reflection: Ed keeps referring to this song as ‘cozy’ and I completely agree. The vibe is cool. I love the tone of his voice here and I think it meshes really nicely with Khalid’s. The content isn’t super relatable, but I think we can all take something away from this one. It’s a good note on self-awareness and being able to see the reality in things that may look glamorous on the surface.
-
Track 2. South of the Border feat. Camila Cabello, Cardi B ★★★★★ Favorite Lyric: So join me in this bed that I’m in/Push up on me and sweat darlin’/So I’m gonna put my time in/Won’t stop until the angels sing
Thoughts/Reflection: This track is literally freaking scorching hot fire. TBH I’m surprised that they led the album with IDC and not this one. It feels like big radio potential to me. Regardless, this song is an absolute BOP - so catchy and so fucking sexy.
I know Ed’s Spanish leaves something to be desired ☺ But I feel like we can cut him some slack after singing (yet another) song dedicated to going down on a woman. The ginger is forgiven! Five stars for him! And I’m going to have SOTB on repeat all summer (or for the rest of my life).
Oh, I also really like Cardi on this song. IDK if she’s problematic or w/e, I don’t really follow her in the media at all. But her verse is fun. (I think Ed got a lil jungle fever AY) bahahahah
-
Track 3. Cross Me feat. Chance the Rapper, PnB Rock ★★★★★ Favorite Lyric: Know she gonna slide anytime you bitches talk shit/Keep a lil blade in her fuckin’ lip gloss kit
Thoughts/Reflection: Love love love LOVE this one. It just makes you want to get up and DANCE the damn thing! I have to laugh a little at the thought of Ed being hard & tough, lol, but it’s a cool concept nonetheless. Like he said in his Charlemagne interview, it’s kind of a love song…. but a different tempo. It’s catchy as all hell and Chance’s verse is fucking cool.
Full points.
-
Track 4. Take Me Back to London feat. Stormzy ★★★★★ Favorite Lyric: Coz you can win BRITS (it don’t stop)/And you can do Glasto (headline slot)
Thoughts/Reflection: Fuck. This song, though. IIt’s the first one that jumped out at me when I did my first full album listen. And I haven’t stopped listening since. The chorus is so syncopated. Stormzy is sick on this track, I love his voice so much. And it just feels like the two of them really play off each other nicely and probably had a blast making this song.
Also, Ed flexing “Grossed half a billi on the Divide tour/No I’m not kidding what would I lie for” is BDE and I’m personally really here for it.
This song is a banger and you should dance in your kitchen to it while baking pastries. FIve stars for you, Big Mike and Teddy.
(Dear God please let Stormzy guest live in Ipswich)
-
Track 5. Best Part of Me feat. YEBBA ★★★★ Favorite Lyric: it’s not a lyric but that part when Ed & YEBBA are harmonizing perfectly in the whoooaaAAaaaA
Thoughts/Reflection: I love the sound on this song! His voice is so raw and tender here. It reminds me of Plus era, but grown up. I think it may be how delicately he approaches the syllables in his verse and the chorus. YEBBA’s tone is super rich and lovely, and they sound great together.
I’m taking a “star” off here because I don’t love the lyrics. I get that he’s being vulnerable and showing insecurities in verse 1, but then YEBBA follows that up with lamenting about misplacing things and being late for the train? It doesn’t seem to match up with admitting physical/bodily insecurities. Also, it could just be that I hate that Ed thinks of himself this way.
DUDE IS HOT AF
-
Track 6. I Don’t Care feat. Justin Bieber ★★★★ Favorite Lyric: I don’t like nobody but you/I hate everyone here
Thoughts/Reflection: Oh god. When did this song come out? I’m trying to think back to my first impressions of it, LOL. It’s bright and poppy and of course it went and stayed #1 all summer (thus far). I remember thinking it was so cool that the melody is super mainstream and upbeat, but the underlying theme is around social anxiety. “Crippled with anxiety/But I’m told I’m where I’m sposed to be”
I mostly skip this one now that the full album is out, but I think I listened to it for a full 48 hours on repeat when it first dropped. Bieber is problematic and shit, and honestly I don’t think he adds much to the song. I really like Ed’s acoustic version where he does the whole thing solo.
The bridge slaps. Literally. I love that clapping bit behind it. I wish that Ed hadn’t fucked up the lyrics to the bridge in the acoustic version lolololol
Four stars, will bop along for many moons to come
-
Track 7. Antisocial feat. Travis Scott ★★★★★ Favorite Lyric: So antisocial but I don’t care/Don’t give a damn I’m gonna smoke here/Got a bottle in my hand bring more tho
Thoughts/Reflection: DID YOU SEE HIM GUEST AT TRAVIS’ SHOW LAST NIGHT? This song was already one of my faves but holy shit. In interviews, Ed talks a lot about feeling awkward on stage without a guitar - but it didn’t look like that last night. He was bouncy as all hell, sounded great, looked great. Looked like he was loving the crowd’s energy too.
And the music video? That deserves a post all on it’s own.
This track is pretty short but it’s packed with good stuff. Ed’s intro is really strong here, the chorus is interesting despite the repetition. I physically can’t help but groove along to this tune. I’m sorry. I have no say in the matter
-
Track 8. Remember the Name feat. Eminem, 50 Cent ★★★★★ Favorite Lyric: 20 years old is when I came in the game/And now it's eight years on and you remember the name/And if you thought I was good, well, then I'm better today
Thoughts/Reflection: YES. YES. YES.  The song intros with a reference to Ipswich, bitch. I love how Ed makes those connections back to his upbringing.
It’s a little unreal that these three iconic voices/styles can flow so well on a song and still sound so balanced.
I’ve got this one on repeat too. I’m determined to learn all of the words damnit!!
Five stars for a tune that I would love to see performed live someday.
-
Track 9. Feels feat. Young Thug, J Hus ★★★
Favorite Lyric: See you wigglin’, jigglin/If I have a bite will it taste like cinnamon?
Thoughts/Reflection: This song is fine. I like the feature verses. The song just doesn’t stick out that much for me.
-
Track 10. Put It All on Me feat. Ella Mai ★★★
Favorite Lyric: I try to be strong but I got demons/So can I lean on you?/I need a strong heart and a soft touch
Thoughts/Reflection: Falsetto. Falsetto everywhere. I love that! Ella Mai’s voice is so rich. Unfortunately, I don’t have a lot more to say on this one. It’s not a song I’m playing on repeat, but I don’t skip it either.
-
Track 11. Nothing On You feat. Paulo Londra, Dave ★★★★ Favorite Lyric: You and I/Whisky on ice/Maybe later we can turn down all the lights
Thoughts/Reflection: This song is SEXY and cool…. ‘smoke clouds and the scent of perfume’.... the imagery. Man. More falsetto here. Also, please go look up the translation of Paulo Londra’s verse. Thanks. I’m sweating. Is it hot in here? This album is *sexual*
ALSO THE ‘BRRRP’ AFTER “they keep ringing my phone”  bahahahahah
-
Track 12. I Don’t Want Your Money feat. H.E.R. ★★★★★
Favorite Lyric: I need you here for the good times and the bad times/Yeah the pullin’ out my hair gettin’ mad times/Not just the when I’m in your bed on my back times
Thoughts/Reflection: THIS IS SUCH A GODDAMN TUUUUNEEEEEE!!!!!!! I love this song so much. 10/10 jamming out to this in the car at every opportunity. Finger snappin’ cool r&b vibe. I love the super quick tempo (but not quite rap?) in Ed’s verses. And I always appreciate the little double-meaning-references in Ed’s songs - like ‘diamonds, silver or gold’ means $$$ of course, but also just success in terms of album sales performance.
TBH when I saw the title on Ed’s tracklist reveal, I totally thought this would be a slow mushy love song about how Ed’s lucky to have found someone who wasn’t into him for his money. This was a pleasant surprise!! I love that it’s a little angsty.
Five STARS bitch I love this song and y’all are sleeping on it
-
Track 13. 1000 Nights feat. Meek Mill, A Boogie Wit da Hoodie ★★★★
Favorite Lyric: Birds eye view/Pay my dues/For a two-mile queue
Thoughts/Reflection: i been ON for a thousAND NIGHTSSSSS NEW YORK TO LONDONNN DIFFERENT CITY EVERY DAYAYYY
1000 Nights: a flexy bop and I love it
This song is about the Divide tour which has been going for approximately 572 years. Not that I’m complaining.
But it’s cool (how many times have I said ‘cool’ in this post? don’t answer that). Ed loves touring and that comes out in this song. And Meek’s verse is so fun to rap along to!
Four stars.
-
Track 14. Way To Break My Heart feat. Skrillex ★★★★★
Favorite Lyric: I can’t stop thinkin’ bout her/And her lips on mine, so soft/Feelings I don’t know the name of
Thoughts/Reflection: biiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiitch.
This song is NOSTALGIC and I simply adore it. It has that same… “cozy” feel that Beautiful People does. Which is strange, considering it’s a song about heartbreak. But it’s just so. Soft. And warm.
We’re back to super soft placement of words and such pure tone.
It’s hauntingly beautiful. And yet uptempo! Bless, Skrillex. I especially love the drums that come in during the chorus, after “you’re still gone, and i’ll say”
PS, the soft sound of mouth smacking at :13. Use headphones.
Some of my favorite Ed songs are ones about heartbreak, and I appreciate that he included one here. About an imaginary heartbreak 👀
Take another five stars from me, bud
- Track 15. BLOW feat. Chris Stapleton, Bruno Mars ★★★★★
Favorite Lyric: Hot damn/Pop it like a pistol mama/You got me down on my knees/Baby please?
Thoughts/Reflection: *laughing nervously*
Again, definitely not what I expected out of this track when the titles were all revealed. I LOVED release day on this one. The world collectively lost their shit. I need nothing more in this world than to see this song performed live, especially with a full band and Ed on an electric guitar.
I’m still not over this loud, full, energetic song full of men bellowing about wanting to, well, fuck.
Bye
(five stars from me and also my 62 year old coworker Jan)
:::OVERALL:::
This album is SO GOOD MATE and I already cannot wait until the next collabs project! Ed blessed us with 15 amazing tracks to tide us over until Subtract comes out. They’re so different from his normal album stuff and I really love to see him try new sounds and get to create/collaborate with artists he admires so much.
it also has me real hot and bothered lmao
Thanks for coming to my tEd talk.

Mmmmmkay I have to rant about Nier: Automata for a bit; I accidentally triggered the end of the game (playthrough 2, ending B) last night and stayed up till 2:00 trying to finish the stupid “not allowed to save” phase. But y’aLL IT’S SO GOOD??????? AND 3RD PLAYTHROUGH ISN’T ANOTHER RE-RUN OF THE SAME STORY WE GET MORE STORY AAAAAAAAA
(more under the cut because there is ALOT for those who care;;;;;)
- OK SO THE MUSIC IS AMAZING??? I love LOVE that the music dynamics build in instruments and intensity as you progress towards danger/plot, but also softens again for quieter moments and just...musical storytelling is so sooooo my jam I love it. Also that the music goes 8 bit when 9S hacks stuff, it’s actually kinda cute X’D
- ON THE SUBJECT of 9S being able to hack into enemies and you getting to play that as a little teeny ship shooting down viruses and barriers and whatnot. Genius???? That added SO MUCG to the story on the second playthrough as 9S. Particularly discovering the fact that all of humanity?? Is actually extinct?? ...even BEFORE the aliens/machines attacked earth?? WH A T?????? WHAT THE HECK ARE ANDROIDS FIGHTING FOR THEN????? *every time an android salutes and says “glory to mankind” now* GLORY MY FOOT THEY ALL DEAD MOVE ON--
-  I realize it probably has alot to do with the lore of previous nier games and I’ll probably have to trawl through Wiki pages soon here. Emil himself really broke my heart aaaaaah baby...his side quest is so sad. I also looked at arts and he was a really cute kid?? Before he was turned int the freaky moon skeleton thing...?? Oh my goodness......
-  The secret lunar tear flower room is gorgeous. I just sat there for awhile to soak it all in...the music is so nostalgic and I’ve never heard that song bfore how do y’all DO THAT--
- Emil’s shop is pretty cute. He just drives around the ruins and sells stuff if you shoot him and he’ll stop X’’’D It did ruin alot of serious moments tho. *Engels, talking about how he’d sinned for killing so many androids and choosing death--* “S-A-L-E SAAAALLLEEE~~!! EVERY SALE’S A WIIIINNNNNN~~~~!!!! LALALaaaaaa~~~...” Me: *facepalm*
- ...I just realized the little tune he sings is a cheerful rendition of the music in the flower room. H E C K
- ANYWAY. Onto the actual game. I really really enjoyed playing as 9S for obvious reasons (bABY) but it really did add so soooo much to the pretty much surface level story when you first play as 2B. Which sums them up pretty well...2B, Battle unit 2, pushes on relentlessly, avoids thinking too hard about things and what she’s doing because oh dear, EMOTION might get in the way...9S, Scanner unit 9, on the other hand, cannot stop his curiosity. He asks questions, he sticks his nose in way further than he should to some dangerous stuff. I think he realized Machines were sentient and had feelings long before 2B, but was in denial for a good while. You learn so much more about what you’re fighting as 9S, because he scans. He observes, searches, discovers. Heck, some hacking caused him to experience empathy for the poor things, to his horror...
- Actually, there are alot of scenes where either 2B or 9S questions why a machine they’re killing is screaming for help, of crying for lost family, or loudly proclaiming loyalty to a king they’ll give their lives for...they stop for a moment, but the other quickly jumps in and reminds them that it’s just imitation. It’s not real, it’s fake, machines can’t feel, yadda yadda...it was odd to me they kept switching off on reminding, but...I think they both know, deep down, what they’re doing. But denial. Because if machines DO have feelings, if they are sentient...what does that mean for all they’ve killed...? Just...hoo BOY the moral dellimas in this game?? Scary good. The quests get that across alot.
- I don’t like the theme of hopelessness in most of the side quests?? I do see many of them as cautionary tales though. We watch many characters lose hope and the will to live after their thing/person they’re living FOR is gone. It makes me worry alot about 2B, who is a soldier through and through. 9S actually does have hopes and dreams for things outside of the war, which I love ;7; they definitely lean on each other alot emotionally on this respect though...I don’t know quite what to make of the themes of the game this far in yet;;;;
- The love between 9S and 2B is of course my favorite thing. Familial, romantic, idk. I, being me, see it as more platonic, “You’re my rock in this storm” only friend/sister/brother vibe, but as more of a fan of platonic relationships, that is what I tend to do. But 9s following 2B around like a lost puppy and trying to do all he can to help and do his job but also getting bored with said job and trying to make the most of things, asking all the “why” questions, 2B acting irritated but also always keeps him close and makes sure he’s safe....going ballistic when someone hurts her boy ;;v;; I love...2 kids. Their operators and pods are such fun dynamics too~~
- As far as endings A and B...DANG. It hit worse because you get backstory on the giant ocean machine (that 9S just hit with a giant missle, which he also had to ride to keep it on the right path...DX NO SELF PRESERVATION) he just...wanted his mama......;;A;;
- Also it’s not fair. 9S is so injured by that missle attack, then I guess Adam finds him and is like “HM. *sticks the lil boy impaled on a wall* Perfect. *proceeds to emotionally and mentally torture said child*“ like YO ADAM THAT’S NOT HOW YOU DO THINGS. Then 2B proceeds to kick down walls for her boy and kills Adam and walks off carrying 9S bridal style into the sunset. Lovely. I have a comic idea for this part, lol.
- Oh I don’t like Adan very much, he is pretty tho?? There was alot of blood though...how do machines bleed?? How do the androids bleed?? What??? I question this alot.
- HHHHHHH THE BECOME AS GODS CHAPTER SCARED ME I DON’T EVER WANNA DO THAT AGAIN DANG SUICIDAL ROBOTS SCARED ME SO BAD
- Fighting Eve was...annoying but still heartbreaking. He misses his brother so much....even though Adam is a butthead and couldn’t care less he left his little brother behind DX just everything about that fight was Tragic. Also Eve developing more self awareness and realizing “Eve” is a girl’s name and being a bit miffed LOL that’s what y’all get when your first book is the bible kiddos...I realize they’re technically like what? 2 weeks old still???
- The ENDING. From 9S’s perspective is especially scary....the corruption transforming him, 2B coming in to kill him to stop the pain, he BEGGED her to, just....hhhhhhh babies ;;A;; 2B’s soft broken crying over him as she’s forced to strangle her only friend to death just aaaaaAAAAAAAA I DIE ;;;;;;;;~;;;;;;;;;
- I was actually able to cry over it this time coz. It was 2 am. No parent awkwardly watching over my shoulder. Because the pose for this scene is...........super awkward..........like......really........their clothes are super torn up and uh. The first time I was just hoping my parents wouldn’t mistake it for a sex scene or something hhhhhghhhhh;;;;;; I really really REALLY wish the pose was different, the game does need to give the fanservice a rest, at LEAST for a scene this serious DX I’m able to ignore it but when someone else is watching I don’t wanna have to explain;;;;
- That IS a big gripe I have with the game. The fanservice. Just. Why. How is 2B’s outfit practical?? Self destruct mode???? REALLY???? Get this girl battle shorts or something please.....I guess if I looked at it more as a ballet outfit?? I might make some edits when I draw her because GEEZ.
- 9S gets some of this too. Self destruct mode, his shorts are blown off???? WHAT THE HECK???? Welp, never using that again. also why is he the only yorha boy android??????????? X’’’’D They never explain that!!
- BACK TO ENDING STUFF why were there random data hologram girls standing there, watching 2B strangle 9S?? Just...silently there...they weren’t there in the first playthrough?? I’ve seen them a couple times but they’re NEVER mentioned?? WHAT ARE THEY-- is it a glitch?? Wha--
- Teeny 9S being able to dump his consciousness into a giant machine robot guy and cradling 2B in his hand ;;~;; he’s fine y’all I’m so GLAD (I wanna draw something for this scene.... I wanna draw alot of things)
- I love Pascal. He should adopt all the sad people to his happy peace village. He already started that...what a good egg.
- The accessories option is lovely. I’ve been running around with 9S with a blue bow in his hair forever now ;7; replaced with the flower in his hair because BOYS AND FLOWERS I LOVE but I think I might give the flower to 2B because she’d look lovely with it and....I miss the blue bow X’D
 - Also the AMOUNT of things this could line up with a KH universe....as far as how androids work, hearts (black boxes), memories making you...you, being able to transfer “hearts” to new bodies when the old is destroyed, POWER OF LOVE AND FRIENDSHIP...there’s alot. I dunno what to do with this info...
Anyway, I have alOT of thoughts and feelings on this game, it’s like...a very cool book. I’ve had trouble putting down. These aren’t even all of them but idk who I can actually rant to so here it is for the Void
I’m so interested to see where it goes!

﹟ ♡  THIS MONTH IN MUSIC  :  APRIL 2019.
♡♡♡
This month was surprisingly rich and eventful when musical releases are considered; I had a hard time picking my top five of the month, especially when a lot of great releases trickled in near the end. However, as many character flaws as I have, being indecisive typically isn’t one of them, so without further ado, here are my top five recommendations for the month of April.
Before we get into it, though, I just want to say I know that I missed last month -- you guys won’t let me hear the end of it, and rightfully so. I won’t make a lot of excuses beyond there was a lot going on with work and in my personal life, but I’ll do my best not to miss another month again. March wasn’t that eventful anyway, though there were a few gems. If you’d still like me to talk about them at a later time, let me know.
Anyway, let’s get started. As always, all links for streaming and purchase will be included in each section. Please support these artists and their great music.

#005. “THANKS (고맙다)” - DOUBLE SINGLE BY GEMINI (제미나이) RELEASE DATE: 06 APRIL 2019
Now, this may be a little shocking and possibly even upsetting to some of my readers, but I’m actually not entirely all-that-familiar with the whole Gemini situation, even if my younger sister is under their same company. All that went on while I was still in college, and trust me, I had a lot of drama of my own to sort through at the time, but the gist of what I knew before this release was that they were involuntarily put through a survival show where half the group got cut. Through my sister’s experiences, I know a little bit of what it can be like to be in a group; you literally spend every second of your time together and more often than not, the members get really close. The pain that event must have caused them is so tangible with this release, even three years after everything happened as it did, as the twelve of them briefly reunited to release these two songs.
With that bit of background out of the way, “Thanks (고맙다)” consists of two songs; one with the exact same title and another called “Don’t Wanna Cry (울고 싶지 않아).” Both songs are Future Bass-esque tracks with modulated synth patterns and heavy beat drops, which I think is a unique pairing with such sad and emotional lyrics -- but it works well. In both cases, it really makes the listener feel the strength of their emotions, and it has the potential to generate this sort of bittersweet nostalgic feeling, which I find quite genius on the part of the arrangers and composers of these two songs; and sensibly, the members of Gemini themselves worked on every aspect of these songs together. It shows.
For specifics, we’ll start with the title track, as it’s the first of the two that appears on the tracklist. “Thanks (고맙다)” is, in my opinion, the lyrically superior of these two tracks, so I’m glad to see it as the title. The chorus is so powerful both lyrically and musically that I got that lump in my throat as I listened, and even as someone who doesn’t know the entirety of their story, I really felt for these boys and all they had been through together, and apart. The general message speaks toward the regret they feel for not better articulating how much they cared for one another while they were together, so they take this time now to thank each other "even after all the waiting, all the longing, and all of our memories.” That’s a truly beautiful message, and I believe it may be encouraging to other groups not to take each other for granted, because you never know what your company will do with you, at the end of the day.
“Don’t Wanna Cry (울고 싶지 않아),” while not as lyrically solid as its predecessor, is definitely the sadder of the two songs as you may have gathered from the title. The synths are used in a way that support the simple chorus so that the listener can feel more than hear how the events of the survival show have affected them. According to the album description, this song was actually written three years ago, right after the events of the show came to an end -- but they re-recorded and released it now that they have the chance. It definitely shows how their skills as lyricists and artists have progressed; this isn’t a bad song at all, don’t get me wrong, but I almost feel as though “Don’t Wanna Cry (울고 싶지 않아),” should have been first on the tracklist because the way it conveys a simpler, though sadder message. On this track, the members of Gemini are basically telling each other how sad they are to be separated, and how much they wish things could have been different -- but how, in the end, they’ll be strong for one another, and always there for each other, waiting to do anything they can, and for the chance to be together again. It almost seems like a love song, honestly, and I appreciate the emphasis on the vulnerability and the value these boys place on their relationship. It’s definitely something you don’t see a lot of boy groups doing.

#004. “RUSSIAN DOLL” - STUDIO ALBUM BY COLA RELEASE DATE: 25 APRIL 2019
I feel as though everyone has those artists that they know about and appreciate but don’t heavily “stan” so, ashamedly, some things fly under the radar. That’s Cola for me. I love to see more experimental and bold artists out there, especially male ones, because male artists in the industry tend to repeat and copy the same trends and styles and ideas and it gets stale really quick. But Cola always brings something fresh and new, and that’s what I can really appreciate about his music. I didn’t let “Russian Doll” slip through the cracks for me; as soon as I heard it had come out, I dropped everything and went to listen. And let me tell you, I was far from disappointed.
As Cola’s fourth full-length album, “Russian Doll” consists of 12 tracks, with one title. As this isn’t an in-depth review of the album, I can’t talk about every song, but I’ll tell you now that all of them are worth your listen. The two I’d like to highlight are “Golden Age” and “Motherfucker,” and of course I have to talk about the title track, “Juice.”
“Golden Age” is the first song on the tracklist, and I think this was done with incredible purpose. The slow progression of both the lyrics and the music together really sets the mood for the rest of the album, which takes you on this sort of rollercoaster of emotions and sensations. The lyrics are delivered with so much emotion that it can be easy to forget about the accompanying music, but the way the vocals are pushed to the forefront is actually really appropriate for a song like this, in my opinion, and the way the progression is paced sort of primes you for this huge bang that doesn’t actually come within this track itself, but that’s okay. An explosive bridge or a sudden change in tone would have felt weird with a song like this, and I like it as a standalone, but I think it’s supposed to lead you into the album, like the prologue of a story. On top of that, the deeply personal lyrics convey a theme of self-discovery and self-giving love, which is really sweet. As painfully single and alone as I am, this song really made me feel loved for four minutes.
Remember that “bang” I just mentioned? That’s “Juice.” I was not expecting this energetic pop song right after “Golden Age” just plunged me deep in my feelings, but I think that’s what makes this song an even better experience than just listening to it on its own. As a pop connoisseur, I love everything about this song -- the high and light vocals, the disco-synth beat, the overt sexual innuendos -- it’s great. I can already see future-Melody in her skintight rainbow dress dancing to this in the gay bar after having too many sangrias, and I’m happy for her. I hope she gets juiced, too.
The last song from this album I’d like to talk about is track seven, “Motherfucker.” And no, I don’t just like this song because I have a potty mouth, though that’s definitely a factor; the fact of the matter is that lyrically, this song is really something special. The lyrics are written and delivered in this short-of-breath kind of way that makes the song feel so simple and yet so passionate, and the way its so in-control of itself as a song is excellent. This song knows exactly what it is and Cola knows exactly what he wants to say, and how to say it. I feel like most will agree with me here, but the lyrics “do you really want me to write a feminist anthem? / I’m happy cooking dinner in the kitchen for my husband” sent me. There’s something so intrinsically feminist about that lyric, because its his choice. It’s not something he, or any person listening, should feel required to do because they hold a ‘submissive’ role in a relationship. But when it’s something you’re happy to do, regardless of what society says? That’s powerful.
Listen to “Russian Doll” here.

#003. “OLD TOWN ROAD (REMIX)” - SINGLE BY LIL NAS X AND BILLY RAY CYRUS RELEASE DATE: 05 APRIL 2019
I know. Okay? I know. I am risking my credibility as a music journalist by putting this song in what is meant to be a serious review -- but hear me out. I’m more than willing to argue about why this song is unironically good all day long. As Lil Nas X says on the track himself, “Can’t nobody tell me nothin’.”
The original “Old Town Road” came as 2018 was fading away (good riddance), and though it was pretty popular within the meme community as this fun and entertaining country-trap hybrid, it never really saw real status as a musical release. Lil Nas X was only 19 when he released it to SoundCloud, and as I’ve stated before, SoundCloud is not exactly the place to go if you want to find music of legit quality. Not always, at least.
But when this remix hit the charts, everything changed. At first I didn’t even bother with it because I had listened to the original and while it served its purpose as a comical and light-hearted guilty-pleasure track, it wasn’t anything I was too invested in. Yet, as I’m sure any of you who have a twitter account are aware, this song was literally everywhere and was climbing the charts faster than anything I had ever seen before, so I gave in and listened. And, by god, this is among very few country songs I can actually enjoy -- and that’s saying a lot, as a country girl by birth.
So, let’s get into why this song is so, so good. First of all, the arrangement is simple yet so effective, and the beat drop on the aforementioned “Can’t nobody tell me nothin’” chorus is borderline artistic. The way the vocals are synthesized and enhanced gives the song a completely different feel from its original, like something you can actually enjoy without feeling as though your best friend will side-eye you from the corner of the room (that is based on personal experience), and even if he did, you wouldn’t care. Admittedly, this song leaves a lot to be desired lyrically, but the simplistic rhyme scheme and Billy Ray Cyrus’ assertive and very iconic rap bring a joy to my heart that is nearly indescribable.
My only complaint about this song is that it’s so short. At least one more refrain, or another verse would have been greatly appreciated since it feels like it stops so short, but that’s easily remedied by hitting the replay button. Not all songs have to be deep and thought-provoking to be good, and Lil Nas X deserved his big break with this infectious and spirit-lifting song he and Billy Ray Cyrus have brought us.

#002. “I LUV U” - SINGLE BY 5OGUE (보그) RELEASE DATE: 19 APRIL 2019
I felt somewhat depressed about missing my chance to review 5ogue’s sixth mini-album, “Mixed 6nals” last month, but as if they read my mind, they released an auxiliary single near the end of their promoting period to give me a second chance. (Side note: if you, my dear readers, are still interested in full a Mixed 6nals review, just let me know. I have a lot to say about that album.) They’ve actually done this before with their fifth mini-album, “Re:Covery” where they released “HXTE U” as a single as a gift to fans. I can only imagine how much work and planning goes into something like that, but 5ogue have shown themselves to be fiercely dedicated to their fans many times before, so I can’t say I’m surprised.
Anyway, to be honest, I was kind of shocked when I first listened to this song because I thought I wasn’t too fond of it. I’ve stated many times before that I’m extremely picky with songs that have overly-repetitive lyrics because I feel like if they don’t serve a certain purpose, it’s just ear poison, but after my first listen I quickly released just how obsessed with this song I was, even if the word ‘like’ is said over 100 times.
I don’t think I’m very susceptible to brainwashing, but the chorus went from being a little annoying to being infectious; I genuinely couldn’t stop listening to it because I couldn’t get enough, and the more I listened, the more the song grew on me. The chorus does most of the work for this track, and I think that’s where that ‘purpose’ i mentioned earlier comes in, because the verses are simple but are delivered in a way that center around the chorus and pull the song together perfectly. The message of being so extremely infatuated that it makes them physically and emotionally sick is conveyed in not only the lyrics, but the style and arrangement of the song itself, and that makes it so clever. They don’t glamourize that, either -- they show how unhealthy it is to think of someone that way, even if it can be sickeningly sweet. I love that. I luv that.
5ogue have pretty much established themselves as the masters of Retro Pop, so the old-school-with-a-new-school twist aspects of this track come as no surprise, but rather as a nice brand that lets you know this is something they’ve created. And even if you’ve never been obsessed with another person to the degree this song expresses, the power vocals and smooth raps draw you in enough to invite you to their world, and to give you a taste of what its like. That’s brilliant to me, and 5ogue really stepped outside of the box with this song.

#001. “SUPREME” - EXTENDED PLAY BY WICKED! (위키드!) RELEASE DATE: 25 APRIL 2019
This may look like bias because, as many of you probably know, my sister is in this group. But, as many of you probably also know, I don’t really tend to let how much I like or dislike an artist influence my objective reaction to their music, so believe me when I say this album is number one because it’s amazing rather than my familial ties to it.
Good? Good.
That out of the way, let’s talk about “Supreme.” This is, by far, Wicked!’s best release to date and I’m not sure if they’ll be able to top it anytime soon. Every song on this mini-album was good, so much so that I struggled to pick which ones to discuss here at first, but after a long period of introspection I have settled on “No” and “Like It,” and of course we should at least briefly cover the other title track, “Kill This Love.”
This album starts off with a bang, literally, as the heavy drum and trumpets of “Kill This Love” will actively scare the shit out of you if you aren’t expecting them. But, given this song’s disposition and very bold lyrics, I think that was more than intentional, as the girls discuss getting rid of a toxic and superficial love before it becomes something they can’t walk away from. Kimmy’s rap in this song is some of the best I’ve heard from her; the tumble-like flow and high-energy really adds to the overall message of this song -- that they’re strong enough to let go of something for their own good, even if they don’t necessarily want to do it on the surface level. The vocalists really came through on this song as well, and all the members really did their part to make this power anthem the great song that it is.
Next up is “No,” one of my favourite songs to come out this year so far. This song actually distantly reminds me of “I’m Too Sexy” by Right Said Fred, with the low synths and dance-pop vibe it gives off, as well as the confident lyrics. Don’t get me wrong, though; these girls outsold those crusty white guys without any question concerning it. The chorus and Future Bass-like arrangement of it are so unique, and fuse with the idea of loving yourself and being confident in the things you like in an unexpected and yet perfect way. The bridge of this song is actually my favourite part, as it makes you just want to strut like a supermodel no matter what you’re doing or wearing. This song makes me feel sexy, independent, and free to do whatever I want, and I think that’s a common sentiment. It’s excellent work.
Finally, I feel a begrudging need to talk about “Like It” -- and I have to say begrudging because, as fantastic of a song as this is, it’s really weird to hear my little sister sing about sexual sensations. But, we’re both grown women and I can look past that enough to tell you that “Like It” is one of the best songs on this incredible album, second to only “No,” in my opinion. The Dance-pop and R&B combination of this track is beautiful in terms of both its arrangement and how it fits with the sensual lyrics. Speaking of those lyrics, they’re pretty simple aside from the raps, but I think that’s perfect for a song like this because when you get to feeling so strongly about wanting to be with someone, you often can’t think straight. Maybe I’m giving the writers too much credit, but if that was intentional, it’s brilliant.
Listen to “Supreme” here and stream its music videos here, here and here.
Well, that’s all for this segment of This Month in Music. Be sure to tell me about your favourite songs of the month in the comments, and start a discussion about any of the points I’ve brought up today. I hope you enjoyed, and I helped you to discover at least one new song you love. ♡

March Soundtrack
Having lost our beloved Evie on the 9th of this month, I’ve been – in a word – sad. In more words: bereft, devastated, guilt-ridden, lost, heartbroken, depressed, a total fucking mess.
I’ve had just over a week to indulge my grief, but I have deadlines and an empty bank account to worry about, so I have no choice but to look to the future. I don’t think I’ll feel consistently happy or generally okay for a very long time, and I feel the tendrils of my usually-dormant depression caressing the weakest areas of my brain, trying to convince me it would be easier to just fall in a heap. But I know that’s not the answer. I don’t want to be miserable, and so back to work I go, grabbing whatever sunshine happens to break through the melancholia with an iron fist.
My March soundtrack may appear objectively depressing, but it’s really been therapeutic. The last thing you wanna listen to when you’re feeling like shit is people talking about how happy or in love they are or how fun their life is. I have a pretty demanding tendency to go numb, so it’s important for me to have things that bring my true emotions to the forefront. Not necessarily to be ‘dealt with’, but simply to be felt. I think we underestimate how vital it is to feel our feelings.
These songs are like medicine to me right now, and collectively this playlist is nostalgic, existential, emotive, sad and maybe even a little bit hopeful. And that’s March Holly in a nutshell.
I hope this playlist might be healing to someone else, too. Enjoy.
While you listen, here are some words about a few standout tracks…
“Chelsea Hotel No. 2” by Leonard Cohen – This is so much more than a song about an ex. Chelsea Hotel is about the places – both in the world and in your mind – you can’t go without thinking of that one person. The verses are fond remembrances of a youthful affair, while the chorus dwells somewhat bitterly on the subject’s faults. Lyrically this song is just stunning, and the simple arrangement really lets them shine. I discovered Chelsea Hotel through Lana Del Rey’s cover, which is hauntingly beautiful but unfortunately only available on her Vevo channel. Check out that version if you haven’t already!
Favourite Line – And clenching your fist, for the ones like us, who are oppressed by the figures of beauty // You fixed yourself // You said “well, never mind. We are ugly, but we have the music.”
Feels Like – Some things aren’t meant to be.
“Mama You Been on My Mind” by Jeff Buckley – Originally penned by Bob Dylan, this song is thematically incredibly similar to Chelsea Hotel No. 2. Both are a kind of sweet and undemanding nostalgia over lovers long gone, admitting both “you’ve been on my mind” and “I don’t want you back”. These songs are perfect depictions of the way we romanticise the past, even when we know we’re better off having moved on.
Favourite Line – I’m just whispering to myself so I can’t pretend that I don’t know // Mama you’ve been on my mind
Feels Like – Stinking hot day, sparkling water with lemon, deck chair, birds singing, mind wandering.
“Not a Fighter” by Airling – International Women’s Day on Triple J was just fantastic (apart from all the douchebags on Facebook claiming that ‘bringing girls to the front’ for one fucking day was special treatment. Snore.) Airling’s Not a Fighter was just one of the many great songs by female artists that blessed my ears when I tuned in to support my fellow lasses. I honestly just think this song sounds beautiful and has good lyrics. It’s nice and relaxing. It aint that deep, fam.
Favourite Line – You know I love you but I’m not a fighter
Feels Like – Lazy Sunday morning, slow-dancing and making pancakes.
“Autumn in New York” by Billie Holiday – I’m crazy about Billie Holiday, and this is probably my favourite song of hers (though with so many to choose from, don’t hold me to that). A change of pace and scenery has seemed mighty appealing lately, and New York and Paris are top of my list, hence: Autumn in New York and April in Paris.
Favourite Line – Autumn in New York is often mingled with pain // Dreamers with empty hands may sigh for exotic lands
Feels Like – A stroll through Central Park; a perfect cliché.
“Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood” by Nina Simone – There’s this unique quality to Nina’s voice that I can only describe as honest, and my god it’s beautiful. It’s terrible that she endured so much pain in her life, but it made her voice exquisite; raw and full of anguish. Art, to me, is about connection, and I feel deeply connected to both Nina and myself when I listen to her music. To transform such dreadful heartache into something so beautiful is an invaluable gift.
Favourite Line – Ya know sometimes baby I’m so carefree // With a joy that’s hard to hide // Then sometimes again it seems all I have is worry // And then you’re bound to see my other side
Feels Like – A universal desperation.
“Mother Earth” by Banks – Oh man was it hard not to cry with this song blasting into my ears 30,000+ feet in the air, nestled among the clouds and the setting sun on the way home from Tasmania, leaving my family and still grieving Evie intensely. I swear to god Mother Earth is a like giant warm cuddle from queen Banks herself, and it’s really taken on a new life for me recently. It’s profoundly comforting, and a reminder to both care for others and allow yourself to be taken care of.
Favourite Line – I know I’m Mother Earth, I see the weather // So I’m not gonna cover up the freckles on my faces // I covered all the bases
Feels Like – Coming home.
“Golden” by Kingswood – This song is just really bloody nice. You could have a lil bop to it or you could fall asleep to it. It’s calming and soothing and smooth and I’ve been obsessed with it from the first listen. Get around it.
Favourite Line – I can feel you beat // Deep breath // In breath // Out breath // Don’t stop until there’s nothing left
Feels like – A long, late-night drive on a quiet freeway
“Sam Malone” by City and Colour – I’m at my realest when lying in the dark for hours, blasting the entire City and Colour discography (excluding the 2015 release I wasn’t a fan of). I adore the self-awareness of his lyrics, his beautiful, warm voice – which, I was lucky enough to verify in 2014, is just as amazing live. There’s a lot of City and Colour on this playlist, but Sam Malone in particular always gets me. It’s a pretty simple track, but I have a rather fierce obsession with anonymity and the freedom attached to it. The theme of this song is like a dream to me.
Favourite Line – I know, there is someplace I can go // Where no one knows my name
Feels Like – You’re nothing. You’re anything. You’re everything.

Top 10 NInjago musical scores
FRAKKINGNINJAGO HAS THE BEST SOUNDTRACK OF ANY SHOW EVER??!! This is gonna be longbecause I like rambling about things I’m passionate about because I’m anannoying obsessive person.
Ok it’sgonna be hard to put these in order but here are 10 of my favorites...sorry Imention so much about what happens in the scenes with the music, I didn’tactually link to scenes, just the soundtracks without talking or anything.
1. Builtto Protect https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YC0eEoKP8Qc&t=122s
Ah yes,the background music when Zane dies! The music starts off on amenacing/hopeless tone as the Overlord captures everyone except Zane. Then at0:19 the music takes a more battle-sounding theme to it and soon transformsinto a suspenseful sounding track as Zane takes on the Overlord and exposes himself to the deadly Golden Weapons. At 1:12 the music is still ‘epic’-sounding but there’s a higher, almostsad-sounding tone to it as the others are freed and it’s becoming more apparentwhat Zane is doing.
At 1:40has a strong foreboding and hopeless sound as Zane is reaching critical mass while hisfriends look on, panicked and still begging him to let go. And then...
2:05
FRIKKING2:05!!!
Zane isdying, he has flashbacks ofhis life and this music is so FREKKIN EPIC AND POIGNANT AND SAD. Then at 2:29 when thefemale vocals come in and it sounds all moving and dramatic it’s ??? DOWNRIGHTHEARTWRENCHING as Zane remembers his dad, his friends, and when it has cute funnyscenes in his flashbacks like his lil dances it just makes it 10000 moredepressing and i CAN’T HANDLE IT I’M CRYING. Oh yeah and I like how therhythmic piano represents his heartbeat. And then towards the end the‘heartbeat’ gets higher and higher and then VWOOOSH Zane’s heart explodes andhe’s blown to smithereens and my heart explodes too.
2. WhatPowered Zane https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bLVtTDqVGZU
Time forthe music AFTER Zane dies! We start off with a really sad solemn sound with auhhh flute?? Whatever that instrument is. As Zane’s friends register what justhappened and find a piece of him on the ground and Nya just starts sobbing andnobody is happy even though the Overlord was defeated because they lost theirfriend. Then at 0:37 is when it fades to his funeral scene as Cyrus Borg talksabout Zane to everyone. The flute is gone for now but it’s still really sombersounding. Then at around 1:05 the flute comes back and plays a tune featured inlots of other Ninjago soundtracks, except this time a lot more sad sounding. Ataround 1:24 it takes on a less sad sound to incorporate the theme of Zane’sfalcon as the poor little bird flies onto Zane’s memorial statue. After that ataround 1:29 is when Kai comes up to speak about his fallen friend. At 1:50 aviolin-type instrument comes in to make things SADDER. As snow starts to fallat the end of Kai’s speech, and all of Zane’s friends smile and come up togather around his memorial. This soundtrack ends at 2:36... sort of.
Thenafter that is the background music for Pixal all alone and sad and then hercomputers start showing recordings of her and Zane. It’s hard to explain thefeeling of the music for this part... it’s not particularly sad. Maybecautiously hopeful? Then at 3:10 is when the music takes a tone ofdetermination/suspense as Pixal runs into one of the machinery rooms where ithints Zane might be alive and the episode ends. Sounds pretty dramatic and thefemale vocals are beautiful. This part is also used again for the endingcredits.
3. TheDeparted https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EsHVnUT3h-8
This! Song!Makes! Me! Cry! Every! Time!
Icouldn’t really find this music on Jay Vincent’s official channel so it’ssomebody else’s upload where it shows the scene too except all the other soundbesides the soundtrack is silent.
Anywaythe music just starts with a sort of wistful Halloweeny sound that soon gets gloomiersounding as Cole realizes everyone forgot his existence. Then at 0:31 where thescene changes to everyone honouring the departed IS WHERE THE FEELS BEGIN. Itjust sounds extremely emotional and makes me just want to cry as the poorinnocent Lego people remember their deceased loved ones. THEN OUCH MY HEART! At1:03 where Zane freezes a memorial statue of his deceased dad, the emotion inthe music gets even more powerful and I am crying now. AND THEN A HIGH PITCHED VERSION OF THE FLUTE-ISHINSTRUMENT JOINS IN AT 1:20 and AAAA I cannot handle the feelings. The musicends on a somber note after 1:40.
4.Something’s Gotten into Lloyd https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xYdut60Qx0s
Anothervideo where it has the scene all silent except for the music.
ANYWAYthe music as Lloyd is taking out his anger after discovering his dad is goingto get taken away from him again is AMAZING, I don’t even know how to describeit, it’s rather simple yet epic and emotional in a hard-to-explain way. And inthis scene Lloyd is in grief and going savage on the anacondrai as he remembersflashbacks of his dad, knowing it’s their fault his dad has to be sacrificed.
Then at0:55 a new piece starts. It’s dark and somber, as the anacondrai-cursedGarmadon is allowing himself to be sent to the Cursed Realm (an afterlife likeHell) to save Ninjago. Then Lloyd returns to his family, declaring he should bethe one to send his father off. At 1:37 as Lloyd chants the spell some powerfuldrums start to join in. Then at 2:06 the music gets hella epic and tragic asthe spell is complete and Garmadon is sent into the Cursed Realm as his familywatches in horror. At 2:26 the music calms down as Garmadon is completely gone. From then on the music has a lighter feel as the Anacondrai are successfullybeing taken to the Cursed Realm too, saving Ninjago.
5. Nya’sTrue Potential https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6RW7s2RTq8o
Anotherone I couldn’t find on Jay Vincent’s channel, but oh well. I mostly love thispiece because it’s from one of Nya’s most amazing scenes in the whole show hereshe saves Ninjago from the Preeminent! It starts off as a sort of slow, gentle, yet almost suspenseful music as Nya is the only one calm in all the chaos. At0:12 we get a sort of contemplative sound as Nya is recalling that Wu told herthat she needs to learn to not give up easily, and at 0:26 a soothingflute-like instrument comes in as Nya is finding inner peace; it sounds reallymystical and calm at this point as Nya is finally unlocking her true potentialwithin herself...
Then at0:38 the music takes on an exhilarating sound as Nya embraces her water powers, using them to create a massive wave to bring the Preeminent down. At 1:17 themusic starts to get even more victorious as success is achieved, and it just soundsso awesome and epic and makes me so proud of Nya! I love how this musicbuilds up.
6. Out ofTheir Element https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U-Zv_VaY9hc
Now for aless emotional track and something just cool-sounding instead. Rebooted had agreat tech/digital theme and had a lot of fantastic music. This track is reallyawesome and I love the techie sound to it. It starts off sort of ambient andforeboding, and actually quite creepy in a way. The music starts building up atbit more at 0:25 and gives a feeling of suspense before quieting at 0:54. Wehear some soft wooshing sounds in the music and then hear some digital-inspiredmusic sounds. The music reminds me of outer space, which is fitting becausethis episode involves them in space. At 1:32 the music gets more intense. At1:45 some more cool sounds are added, I really like these ones. The music endswith a rather dramatic sound. So yeah, this track is really unique, a bitdifferent from other Ninjago music and entrancing to listen to!
7. GhostStory https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7-Z7NK_-4Iw
I loveall of Morro’s themes, the haunting violin is just so creepy and fitting forhim. But this one in particular stirs me because it starts out so innocentsounding and make me feel really sorry for how Morro turned out. The songstarts out gentle, with a nostalgic/innocent and hopeful violin joining in, yetthere’s almost a hint of sadness/regret in it. The music plays during Wu’sflashbacks of taking the lil orphan, Morro, on as a pupil. After this sectionfades out at 1:26, the eerie ambient whistling sound hint that the music isgoing to take a darker turn. At 1:44 the violin comes back, now sounding a lotmore chilling as it’s made clear Morro is becoming bitter and descending down adark path. At around 2:14 the violin goes away again, only to come back at2:30, sounding even more menacing than before. This particular part is used alot throughout the season as Morro’s theme. At 2:45 there’s a moredramatic/dangerous-sounding part, and then the Morro violin tune continues at3:00. The song ends on an ominous note. I like how the violin in this tracksours as Morro becomes more tainted.
8. Always a Need for a Ninja https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sr1YvBZlM20
This linkisn’t from Jay Vincent’s channel either oops. This is a happy song for once! It’s the soundtrack that plays after Lloyd defeats the Overlord and savesNinjago (for now). The track starts on a peaceful yet bright note as the Ninjasrealize everyone is okay and they achieved victory. Then at 0:14 a reallypositive, beautiful piece of music plays as everyone is all happy and cheeringand Cole hugs Zane which is really cute and I tear up because it’s just sowonderful to see all the ninjas happy. At 0:36 we hear a heroic touch to themusic as Lloyd, the saviour of Ninjago, joins his friends alive and well. At1:05 there’s a brief sinister part of the music as Garmadon appears, but it isquickly replaced by heart-warming and sweet music as it is revealed thatGarmadon is cured from evil and reunites with his wife and son. The music israther calm from here on, and then at 2:27 we get a little upbeat,traditional-sounding tune as the Ninjas look forward to what adventures theywill have in the future. This song is a wonderful end to the original Ninjagosaga, ending everything on a positive note and providing optimism for what liesahead.
9. Joyride https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SL9XAOxXooQ
This is arelatively lengthy track but oh well… :P Anyway this is another one that soundspretty different from usual Ninjago background music, and yes, it’s fromRebooted. This one is another upbeat one that sounds kinda funny to me for somereason… it’s funky haha. And sorta catchy I guess? It plays as Kai drives hiscool car on a mission to find out what the Nindroids are up to, but he goesthrough a lot of… issues. The music keeps changing in this track, making itreally fun to listen to, and some parts sound darker than others depending onwhat was occurring in the scene. But it still maintains the ‘cool car mission’feel throughout. There are way too many points in the song where it takes on anew tone, so I can’t point out them all, but it’s okay, this is just a reallycool track that helps viewers get hooked on the scene haha.
10. How to Defeat Your Friend https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S0bE-F4l1lc
Honestly,it was really difficult to choose a 10th favorite. There were lotsof tracks left that I like and it was hard to choose one, but I decided to gowith this one since I tend to like emotional tracks more. I don’t know why Ilike this one so much… I just because the scene in which it played was reallysad to me. Where Jay and Cole, former best friends who have fallen out, need tofight each other and they’re feeling conflicted because they hate each othernow but they feel remorse over their broken friendship. Anyway the song starts withmostly boring dramatic drums with a rather foreboding feeling. But the firstsad part starts at 0:24, it’s just a flute and not much else but it sounds sohaunting, sad, and hopeless, especially when I think about the scene. At around0:43 the flute is gone for a bit and we get some eerie ambience and some stuffthat sounds ominous but not particularly sad. Then at 1:08 we get more sadflute sounds. I know this track is rather simple but the sad flute parts reallyget to me.
Well, that’s all for now! This post is over 2,000 words oml.

ILOVEMAKONNEN FT. RAE SREMMURD - LOVE [6.67] Would you settle for "weReallyLikeMakonnen?"
Crystal Leww: Call it the Lil Uzi Vert effect, but every rapper wants to be a rock star now. Okay fine, that's never not been the case (Gucci is reportedly a big fan of Marilyn Manson), but it feels so pronounced now with influences drawing on the goofy dirtbags of my teenage years: Hoppus, Madden, and Wentz. iLoveMakonnen always existed on the edges of R&B -- "Tuesday" caught on partially because it was just so different from radio R&B -- and Rae Sremmurd were always going to try to be pop stars, in the same way that Drake is, by crossing into whatever genre made sense for them. This drags a little too long, probably overstuffed with one too many verses. I vote that the Slim verse is the one to go, if only because Makonnen is so sincerely sad on something so poppy and Swae gotta stay if only for the asshole-ish-ness of "Her friend is quote unquote with me." Still, all is forgiven by that chorus which is just so much fun. [7]
Julian Axelrod: My one complaint: I'm bummed this isn't the theme song to a Saturday morning cartoon about Makonnen, Swae and Jxmmi playing pranks at a water park. Whenever I'm distraught about the state of the world, I'm going to whisper "iLoveMakonnen and Rae Sremmurd wrote the best Weezer song in 15 years" to remind myself life can still be beautiful. [8]
Alfred Soto: Ooh -- power chords! Portland meets Austin in this Mike WILL-produced rock plodder. Listeners have to get to the chorus to realize the title's a joke, that "Love" responds to Beyonce's "middle fingers up" bit in "Sorry." The Sremmurd boys project their affected ennui convincingly, but the arrangement encourages their dead-eyed tendencies too. [5]
Joshua Copperman: I would have guessed either Travie McCoy or Travis Barker was involved with this song, and it turns out the latter co-produced it and played that surf-y drum loop. The song goes on way longer than it needs to, but just hearing Makonnen and the Rae Sremmurd boys trade verses is enough to sustain the five-minute length.  [6]
Ryo Miyauchi: While the new boys of rap turn to nu-metal to exorcise heartbreak, Makonnen and the Sremmurds borrow from the books of pop punk. The bubblegum guitars do better for Swae and Jxmmi, the latter stepping out of character, covering up sincere hurt -- "now all I feel is pain" -- with the beat's gleaming sunshine. Makonnen, meanwhile, needs some space. The prickly riffs sound more intrusive to him than it should.  [6]
Tim de Reuse: There's casual, biting honesty all over the place, and Makonnen's delivery is thick with enough self-pity to really sell it: "Since you ain't around / I got my middle fingers up / Fuck love" is a perfect blend of awkward determination and punch-the-wall angst, while "I'm heartless, and I don't need a donor" is wordplay just dumb enough to come off totally sincere. Though the lyricism is charmingly messy, its presentation is regrettably clean. The crisp handclaps, palm-muted guitar and glassy bells are polished in the direction of Michael Cera indie pop twee, and the prominent autotune on some of the less tuneful verses over-corrects blemishes that didn't need covering up, which is a technique I'd really hoped died out years ago. A little more off-key grit would have complimented the narrative, but as it stands, it's a cathartic love-is-bullshit rant trapped behind an overthought, glossy veneer. [6]
Stephen Eisermann: "Love" aka trap artists playing Guitar Hero. Seriously, though, this is pretty good. The early 2000s pop-punk, Simple Plan meets Yellowcard production works well with the voice of Makonnen and Rae, even though it feels like a major juxtaposition of sounds. I'm all for exploring sounds and this feels a hell of a lot better than Lil' Wayne's attempt at a similar sound, some years back. The song does run a tad long, but the peppiness of the track combined with the icy, auto-tuned vocals is engaging throughout: so much so, that I find myself wanting to throw my middle fingers up and sheepishly head bang along. Middle school Stephen is all-in. [7]
Joshua Minsoo Kim: There's a bit of precedence here for Makonnen -- his early song "All On You" and a couple tracks he's done with Phantom Posse -- but there's something to be said about the precision of the mopey complaining on display. The chorus is a delight because these guys already sound like they're over the heartbreak, and that they're just having fun with the prospect of being single now. "You turned me into a stoner," they cry, but do they really sound upset? Regardless, I genuinely don't care if this song is good (it is) because the fact it exists makes me incredibly happy, and that's not a statement I'd use to describe how I feel about most art. [8]
Madeleine Lee: My personal nostalgic response to this song is for my undergrad circle of friends, alt bros who had Kanye and T.I. posters on their walls and taught me that "Molly's Lips" is good for jam sessions because it's only two chords. The idea that ten years later every music we loved could come together would've seemed strange to us, but this is about as good as we could've hoped for, and I wish we could sit in the living room on a hungover afternoon to listen to it. I also wish it had garage rock's brevity, though. [7]
