Do you have any tips for dealing with pretty persistent depression? (All good if you don't want to deal with this)

So I’ve been putting this ask off for quite a while because every time I came to look at it, I’d ask myself “well, how do I deal with depression?” and my answer always came back “poorly” or “I don’t”. So I suppose that’s probably my first bit of “advice” … that even if you are coping with depression pretty well, you may still feel like you’re not. By all accounts, I am managing my depression, but it rarely feels like I’m doing it well.

I think the biggest key to dealing with any mental illness is to learn how it ticks. What sets it off? Are there times of the month or day when it gets set off more so than others? What does it react to? What calms you down? What makes you happy?

Once you learn the answers to these things, you can then specialize your coping methods to account for the specifics of your depression. To give you an example, my depression gets worse for half to 2/3rd of the month, and is less of a problem for about a week and a half. So I know that when I’m getting to hit into the downhill slide of my depressive cycle, that I need to allow for more self-care during those times. I know to shove the more involved work that I need to do during my off week where the depression won’t be ruining everything.

I know that politics can set my depression off, so I’m sure to take breaks from reading things or ingesting political content. I know that my family sets my depression off, so I unfollowed them on FB, and only look at their walls/content when I’m in the proper mental space to do so. During days where I’m feeling bad, I try to not participate in activities that can make it worse. When I feel like my mind is going to start running in circles and throw me into a depressive cycle, I pull out a video or game or something that will keep my mind too occupied to follow that path. Sometimes it works, and I can get back on track before spiraling into depressive hell. Sometimes it doesn’t, and I have to initialize other tools to keep myself from spiraling too far out.

I know for myself that fatigue makes my depression worse, so I prioritize getting a good night’s sleep. I know that certain music will help or hurt my depression, and I ingest that music accordingly. I know that being hungry makes depression worse, so I make sure that I’m always well-fed.

By itself, none of these things is a singular cure for my depression. But when combined together, it allows me to function.

On top of this, it’s worth mentioning that sometimes coping with depression means canceling all of my plans and staying at home and recovering. Sometimes coping means forcing myself to mail that package, go get groceries, or go get work done. It takes time and practice to figure out which is best for when, but mastering when to shift gears and how to do both forms of self-care is important for long-term success, imo.

idk if it’s helpful, but I’ve got an ask on ways to approach picking apart your depression here. I’ve also got a tag where I shove my mental health resources, and it will probably have other ideas and skills that you can look into to find some stuff to try.

That being said, I think that’s the other big thing I could emphasize for those trying to figure out how to deal with depression. And that’s to try things. Try different schedules, different coping techniques, different breathing exercises. Experiment with what you eat, how you eat. Experiment with aspects of your life that don’t appear to be working for you until you can find something that helps.

I’ve found that only through extensive trial and error could I find a mixture that helps. Though keep in mind that mental health is fluid, and what works for you now may not work 2 years from now. So it’s important to stay in tune with yourself and your needs, so that you can adjust accordingly.
