so i decided to check the charts of ex/current partners of some selected well known ketu men.

See, Timothee Chalamat having dated Rahu and Jupiter girls kinda validates my theory of Ketu men going for these planetary archetypes. I also see Moon and Mercury nakshatra women.

SUITABLE FLESH - Review

DISTRIBUTOR: RLJE Films & Shudder

SYNOPSIS: Psychiatrist Elizabeth Derby is confronted by a young man, Asa, who recounts a strange tale of abuse by his father. Derby's interest is peaked and she becomes obsessed with helping the young patient, who she feels is suffering an extreme personality disorder. As she investigates his bizarre case it leads her into a world of necromancy, placing her and her loved ones in danger. Her life spirals out of control as she tries to escape a horrific fate.

REVIEW: From short stories to his longer works, the fiction of one of the masters of classic horror, H.P. Lovecraft has inspired the imagination of numerous filmmakers. In 1985 director Stuart Gordon and writer Dennis Paoli raised the bar on Lovecraft adaptations with their horror dark comedy “Re-Animator.” Over the years they worked together on two other Lovecraft tales, “From Beyond” and “Dagon,” good films but not quite capturing the tone and energy of “Re-Animator.”

Prior to Stuart Gordon’s passing in 2020, screenwriter Paoli was working on an adaptation of Lovecraft’s "The Thing on the Doorstep.” With the director’s chair left empty by his passing, actress/producer Barbara Crampton reached out to director Joe Lynch. Lynch read Paoli’s script and offered the screenwriter a few suggestions, including changing the lead characters from male to female. The screenwriter meditated on it, made some changes and the project became SUITABLE FLESH.

The screenplay is quintessential Dennis Paoli. He does a splendid job of creating characters, the focal being Elizabeth Derby. She is drawn into the madness of Asa Waite, and she in turn draws in her friend and colleague Daniella Upton. The plot provides those kinky comedic moments mixed in among the horror that harken back to “Re-Animator.” The plot embraces contemporary elements as it puts a fresh spin on the Lovecraft tale, maintaining the core elements of Lovecraft’s story.

Joe Lynch does an excellent on paying homage to Stuart Gordon as he puts his own spin on the material. The production values are minimalistic and capture a feel of the late 80’s and 90’s genre films. The editing maintains a brisk pacing and the film feels shorter than the 100 minutes. There are some great framing and angles that add to the tone and atmosphere to the film.Lynch creates a sensuality in the film without the exploitation and nudity of Gordon’s films. Composer Steve Moore’s score is perfectly suited to the film. A classic score in its own right but not quite as iconic as Richard Bands work on “Re-Animator” or “From Beyond.”

SUITABLE FLESH is a solid ensemble cast. Everyone has to make bold character swings as they in turn become possessed by this malevolent entity that may or may not be Asa’s father, but something more sinister. Barbara Crampton and Heather Graham have some fabulous scenes together and the duo have an excellent struggle towards the end of the film. The ladies, under the direction of Joe Lynch, are the rock and roll of the film. That’s not to distract from Bruce Davidson or Judah Lewis, who I enjoyed in “The Babysitter” and “The Babysitter: Killer Queen,” but Grampton and Graham are a tour de force.

There is an aspect of Joe Lynch & Dennis Paoli’s adaptation of Lovecraft’s “The Thing On The Doorstep” that also feels reminiscent of Roland Topor’s novel The Tenant that was the basis of he Polanski film of the same name. Both deal with questions of identity, sexuality and the other. Polanski’s is more surreal, Lynch’s is more occult, and both are horrific in their own right. Having viewer several of Lynch’s films and television episodes, he never disappoints. With SUITABLE FLESH he demonstrates his knowledge and love of the genre. He is a talented technician who is equally as skilled at procuring marvelous performances from his cast. He is a unique talent who hopefully will not become corrupted by the study system as he is destined to direct a Marvel or Star Wars film.

2022 MOVIE OF THE WEEK #15

love guaranteed. okay so i added this one to my list to watch with my best friend, because i’m a fan of both the leads.

i’m sorry to say that they could not elevate the movie’s writing and supporting cast enough to make it good--their chemistry wasn’t bad, but the plot was. the most impressive thing about this film was rachel leigh cook’s wardrobe (very nice).

the basic premise seemed good, actually! lawyer helps a guy sue a dating company and they fall in love along the way. very workable romcom setup.

the problem, or one of them anyway, is that once that premise is established...the plot is basically over. there’s no huge conflict that can keep the two of them apart, just a clock counting down until their working relationship ends and they’ll be free to date. i spent at least half the movie wondering what the point was now since they were going to end up together and that made the rest of the story feel irrelevant.

and then a very predictable courtroom confession led to an ending that made the whole story retroactively pointless.

now, i’m not saying i expected the love interests not to get together, when that’s the point of a romcom. (though if this movie had decided to swerve that hard, i would have been impressed a little.) but i do expect a romance to introduce understandable obstacles, which keep me engaged until the end, and to resolve them believably. (grading on a curve.)

in this case, the obstacle was ‘these two kind of maybe don’t want to risk it? or do they? *winks*’ and the resolution was ‘actually the moral principles that made them like each other in the first place don’t matter i guess because love?’ it was very confusing, really, if i thought about it too hard.

and also the plot was propelled heavily along by rachel leigh cook’s employees/friends, who were literally the most annoying side characters who seemed like we were supposed to not find them annoying at all.

it’s rare for romcom side characters to be really great; their function is usually more to just be there, helping keep the spotlight on the stars. so i’m happy to accept forgettable supporting roles like ‘best friend of nina dobrev who got catfished’ and to appreciate the rare icon like ‘jennifer coolidge draping herself across every scene in a gay christmas movie’...i don’t understand why this movie decided that they needed to aim for maximum pushiness and snark and 'bitchy bffs’ here. whatever they thought they were doing, it didn’t work.

i wish i could recommend this one because again, i love the leads. also heather graham is here, doing her best gwyneth paltrow of goop, and that’s a kick. but i spent so much time wondering (sometimes aloud) if there was any point in continuing to watch this movie, while watching it, that i can’t wish that on anybody else.

His father, John Bennett Perry, is an American actor and model. After his parents’ divorce, Perry’s mother married a Canadian journalist and the family relocated to Ottawa, Ontario, where the actor grew up. Perry moved to Los Angeles, California, when he was 15 to pursue acting and graduated from The Buckley School in 1987. Perry began performing improvisation comedy around the Sherman Oaks area during high school. He had his first T.V. role in 1979 in the series “240-Robert” in which he played the character of Arthur. In 1988, he got his first movie role in the film “A Night in the Life of Jimmy Reardon.” He guest-starred on shows such as “Growing Pains,” “Beverly Hills, 90210,” and “Home Free” before landing his iconic role as Chandler in “Friends” in 1994. In addition to acting in the T.V. sitcom, he concurrently starred in multiple films spanning many genres including the rom-com “Fools Rush In” starring Salma Hayek and the crime comedy film “The Whole Nine Yards” alongside action heavyweight Bruce Willis. He also starred in the drama T.V. series “The West Wing” in 2003 and was nominated for two Emmy awards for the role. In 2004, he directed an episode in the 4th season of the comedy T.V. series “Scrubs.” In 2006, he starred as the lead actor in the successful drama film “The Ron Clark Story” which earned him several Emmy and Golden Globe nominations. He starred in several other drama and comedy T.V. series and films throughout the 2000s.
