Propaganda:
For Orufrey: "They're tragic wlw who have devoted their lives to each other since they were kids. They live together, they cook together, they're raising four girls together and they're doing the best they can. Olruggio would do anything for Qifrey if Qifrey would just Let Him 😭 but Qifrey is dead-set on protecting Olruggio and keeping him safe and in the dark no matter what it costs... i cant 😭..."
"Man I don't know they just have the vibes. They have toxic yuri energy but they are two grown men. They've known each other since their apprentice days and have stuck together ever since. Qifrey's main magic type was something he took up because Olruggio proposed that he learned to control the water he feared. They live together away from most of society with Qifrey's four apprentices, living the sapphic cottagecore (ateliercore???) dream. Qifrey, due to the fact that his eyesight is very much failing, something which is very problematic when it comes to witches, who need their eyesight more than most, is getting very desperate to get all he lost to the Brimhats, the witches who took one of his eyes and his memories, and Olruggio ends up noticing this pursuit and is implied to have done this more than once. Qifrey does not want Olruggio to know about both his failing eyesight and his goals, so he ends up completely wiping Olruggio's memory of those things, and laments that Olruggio is a kind person, and one who would most likely forgive him again, but also one who would try to save him, even when he didn't want to be saved. He also apologized right up until the moment Olruggio's memories of his secret were gone. In general I think chapter 40 is the somewhat toxic guy yuri chapter ever. I'm very tired so I do not know how to explain any of this, I just thought "wow Orufrey reminds me of this one poll I saw on Tumblr" and then spent three days straight hunting for your blog before completely forgetting my reasoning for Orufrey being yuri right before I submitted this."
For Joongdok: "Well first of all Yoo Joonghyuk has a whole arc that is transfem coded as hell (has a power/technique that can technically only be used by women but somehow he can also use it, for a time he even turns into a woman to wield it and it's. Actually just let me get the quote "The ines of the face had changed but it was clearly Yoo Joonghyuk. No, it was even more than before.") that just kinda happens,, and doesn't get brought up again but anyway. Second of all just look at them. You see the vision. Also a bonus observation is that these two often get shipped in a poly ship with Han Sooyoung and whenever I see people make a "regular couple, yaoi couple, yuri couple, I see no difference love is love" meme with them the combination of which pair among these three is which of the categories is always different"
Note: This submission also mentions Han Sooyoung, but I decided to count this polyship submission as guy yuri as well.
"They love each other, they pretend they don't care for each other but all their actions prove they care too much, if you remove someone from the trio then the resulting duo is extremely dysfunctional, as evidenced by more than a million words of canon. Is it technically guy yuri? Well, Han Sooyoung is a woman, but in a way she's one of the guys. Kim Dokja and Yoo Joonghyuk are men, but the text heavily hints that Yoo Joonghyuk is a trans woman who's just too busy and stressed out to transition yet, and Kim Dokja has just never thought about his own gender a single day in his life. They made the world for each other, they went back in time countless times and waged countless wars for each other, they wrote and read and lived a story, their story, for each other and that's what saved them all. The way Han Sooyoung writes Yoo Joonghyuk's story to save Kim Dokja and loses herself in the process, the way Yoo Joonghyuk voluntarily lives the story to the point of losing himself too and even forgetting why he originally decided to do it, the way Kim Dokja read Han Sooyoung's story which was Yoo Joonghyuk's life and that's how he found himself, they all took so much from each other and gave so much of themselves to each other, this is all very yuri."
"they're so yuri you have no idea. they have every staple of a yuri ship. unwavering devotion. waiting dozens or thousands of years for each other. dooming themselves and the world for each other. so much yearning. i also see them genderbent a lot (including inn canon in the case of yjh) and they're right both of these people are women. i genuinely can't even see them strictly as men at this point they're just yjh and kdj and they are yuri do you understand."
"they're so yuri. the abscense of yuri is the presence of yuri etc etc. these two guys are all ABOUT abscenses. also one of them is a part time woman. the other guy is a guy but like in the same way a square is a rectangle. anyway they're so guyyuri to me. bonus points also because they have a mutual girlfriend and when she's present they're girlyaoi but that's not relevant to this specifically"

Joongdok shenanigans
Colorblind
Imagine both kdj and yjh are red-green color blind and one day hsy tries to put bright red lipstick on kdj and he’s like
“BUT I DONT WANT BROWN LIPS” and everyone is just like
“wut?” And he gets really confused.
Then Ysa is like
“Dokja-ssi, the lipstick is red…” and kdj is like
“no it’s not” and jhw is like
“wait, are you colorblind?” And kdj is like “No?”
And then yjh walks in and is like
“what’s wrong?” Cause everyone is just silently pondering kdj’s color blindness. Then kdj says
“Yoo Junghyuk-ah, Han Sooyeong’s lipstick is brown right?” And yjh is like
“yeah?” And all of Kimcom (the name for kdj’s group) is internally like “OMFG THEY’RE BOTH COLORBLINDDDD”

Squid and Sunfish
Once upon a time, there was a little squid. The squid had no purpose in life, so it just drifted along with the current.
Until one day, it came across a sunfish. Strange, thought the squid. Usually sunfish don’t come down this deep.
He asked the sunfish what it was doing in the deep ocean. To which the sunfish replied
“I’m looking for a companion.”
The squid was confused. The only one this deep for miles was him.
He looked the sunfish up and down. Surely this guy wasn’t looking for him?
“Well there’s nobody else here but me,” said the squid.
“That’s fine,” said the sunfish.
The squid blinked. Did this stupid sunfish really not get it? He was a loser with no life! Why would this guys want /him/ as a companion.
The sunfish noticed the squid’s distress.
“If you don’t want a companion, there’s nothing I can do,” He said flatly.
As the sunfish swan away, the squid felt an aching in its heart. He realized, he didn’t want the sunfish to leave!
“Wait,” said the squid. The sunfish stopped.
“If you really aren’t bothered, I’ll be your companion.”
The squid couldn’t believe the words coming out of his mouth. Him someone’s companion? Really? The sunfish turned around and smirked.
That annoying way sunfish do. “Knew it.” He said. And from then on. They lived as companions.
The end.
Department story YJH
What if Joongdok AU where Yoo Junghyuk works at A department store and Kim Dokja comes in as a single dad who has to fix his door handle. Except he has no clue how and has no mechanical knowledge.
When Yjh saw a man walk in with a little girl holding his hand he thought--nothing of it. People bring their kids places all the time. But when the man seemingly walked through every isle in a lost manner for what felt like hours, Yjh thought it might be time to step in.
Usually he’d let one of his coworkers handle helping costumers since he-- hated when people went to department stores not knowing what they needed.
Alas, it was a busy day and all of the other employees were helping equally lost customers.
Yjh approached the man when he heard the little girl say
“daddy, why don’t you just ask for help?”--To which the man replied,
“don’t worry sweetie daddy knows what he’s doing…” and went back to looking at shelves that clearly didn’t house what he needed.
“Can I help you with anything?” Said Yjh almost startling the man.
He noticed the small girl staring at her father clearly--waiting to see his response.
“Ah, yes… well… could you point me in the direction of the doorknobs?” Said the man.
Yjh had to hold in his sigh. Only because he had seen the man pass the doorknobs twice in his search.
“Right this way.” He said in the most polite voice he could--muster. He lead the man a couple of isles down.
“Thank you.” Said the man gratefully.
Yjh simply nodded and went back to walking around.
20 minutes later he happened to walk by the isle again, and to his complete and utter shock, the man was still standing there. Yjh walked up--to the man and asked him what the problem was.
“Oh haha, it’s just that… I don’t seem to know what doorknob I need….” The man let out an embarrassed chuckle.
Yjh had just about had it with him. Really, the amount of stress this man was causing him was unnatural.
Yjh tried asking him which model he currently had or if he needed a knew one. The man said he just needed to fix his old one but beyond that he just pretended to ponder. Yjh asked if he had a picture of his old one to which the man said
“ohhhh that’s what I forgot!” At that--Yjh snapped.
He quickly offered to buy one of each kind of doorknob for the man and personally come to his house and instal the one he needed. The man simply seemed taken aback by the offer and the forwardness.
Of course, who wouldn’t with an offer like that. They exchanged--numbers and the man introduced himself as Kim Dokja. Once he finally left, Yjh’s shift was over.
Yjh realized this man had been in the store for a total of 2 hours. As well as that, he had only been looking for a doorknob. A DOORKNOB FOR CRYING OUT LOUD! Yjh took an angry shower and went straight to bed.
The next morning he went into work and after his shift bought exactly what he said he would. When his coworker Hsy asked what he was doing he ranted about the situation to her.
“Wow, you’re down bad” she joked to which Yjh replied to by walking--to his car and driving away.
He texted Kdj and got his address. When he arrived he rang the doorbell. For a while nobody answered. He was getting annoyed because Kdj had told him he was home over text. Then he heard a door open from the back and the sound of rickety wood.
He-turned towards the sound to see Kdj with a tree beach in his hair.
“Hey, sorry about that. The front doorknob is the one that’s broken so we can’t get in and out of it,” he explained.
Yjh felt a pang of pity for this poor man. Kdj gave him permission to forcefully pull-the door open to fix the knob. He did so without much of a struggle. When he saw the state the doorknob was in he wondered how Kdj could’ve let it get this bad.
He wondered how many times he had jammed the door in and out before it got so bad he just couldn’t anymore.
He fixed the doorknob, and when he went to leave Kdj stopped him.
“You know, you could stay and have dinner. It’s the least we can do for all the help you’ve given us.” He paused. “Even if it was out of spite,” he added.
Yjh’s ears went red. Had his reaction really been so obviously out--of frustration?
“You don’t have to though,” said Kdj when he saw Yjh’s hesitation. “No, I accept,” said Yjh curtly.
When he sat down and tried the food, safe to say, he was thoroughly disappointed. Along with knowing nothing of mechanics, he also could barely cook? Yjh’s pea-sized brain saw this as an obvious cry for help and he offered to cook for Kdj every weekend. Kdj at first said know but Yjh was very adamant about it.
Finally Kdj agreed out of the guise that he wanted his daughter Byoo to have better food. In reality he was touched that Yjh-would want to help so bad.
Fast forward a couple months and Yjh asks Kdj to go out.
Somehow, unknown to even Yjh himself, he had fallen for the man who he had met lost in a department store. Kdj agreed and they became boyfriends.
End
Shoe on the other foot
Joongdok Idea that Kdj has really Small feet and Yjh has normal/large feet and as a scenario penalty they have to swap shoes.
So while they’re fighting Kdj has to deal with big boots that keep slipping off and he keeps tripping and falling.
And on the other hand Yjh can’t feel his toes but at the same time is in constant pain.
Not to mention Kdj wears dress shoes so Yjh is having even more fun.
By the end of it Yjh just gets tired of Kdj faking so he just Carries him.
Pillows
What if Joongdok crack au where Kdj keeps buying decorative pillows and Yjh is losing his sitting spots
Yjh tries to sit on the couch but falls to the ground because there’s too many pillows on the couch.
Kdj: oh sorry let me move those^^
He throws them on an already humongous pile of other decorative pillows.
Yjh: why do you need so many??
Kdj: They make the house look nice
Yjh takes a look around the room and there’s piles and piles of pillows everywhere.
He gives Kdj a look of exasperation.
Kdj: well maybe we can put some in storage?
(I imagine this is on some kind of reality tv show and there’s a camera)
The camera cuts to Yjh gesturing violently to the tons of pillows in storage already.
Kdj: huh…
Then the scene switches to their bedroom and Yjh’s side of the bed is covered in pillows.
The camera cuts to one of those interview scenes
Yjh: I have 10% bed space left… I did the math
By the end of it they get Kdj help and he agrees to get rid of most of the pillows, begrudgingly. And Yjh can finally sit in his own house again.
The end scene is Yjh sitting in a couch and just smiling.
Pizza Hut vs Domnioes
Pizza Hut vs Domino’s but make it Joongdok
Also hsy is sys sister cause I need an adult
When lgy and sys decided to make the Domino’s and Pizza Hut in their local town call each other, they weren’t expecting it to blow up this much.
Or even in fact, kickstart a relationship It started as any other harmless little prank by kids would.
They grabbed two phones and had dialed the the two stores on them.
They snickered uncontrollably as the phones rang.
“Shhhhh- haha, shhhhhhhh” said lgy trying to contain his laughter.
“I know, I know,” sys was having an even harder time.
Brrrrr brrrrr brrrr.
“Hello? This is Pizza Hut what can I do for you?”
And
“Hello this is Dominos, what would you like”
Two men’s voices could be heard from the phones.
“What?” They both said in unison.
“This is dominos, you wanted to order a pizza?” Said the deeper gruffer voice.
“If I ordered something from you it definitely wouldn’t be pizza, heck, I’d be weary of a soda from you guys!” Said the other voice.
The other phone went silent. Then,
“Well that’s too bad cause that means you’re stuck with the stuff you people make… yeesh.”The other voice let out an obviously exaggerated gasp.
“How dare you? You know what, where’s your store??”
“123 west rd, and what’s /yours/“
Sys and lgy were dying laughing at this point, they had to go to the corner of the room.
“246 North st!” The other voice said harshly.
“You know what?” It continued, “meet me at 135 south blvd, I dare you!”
“We’ll get ready to be defeated!” Announced the other.
Then both calls hung up. Sys and lgy were silent for a momen before running into the other room.
“HSY!! CAN YOU DRIVE US TI 135 BLVD?? WE WANT TO SEE TWO GROWN MEN FIGHT!!” They said, in unison to the author who was trying to get her work done, now unsuccessfuly. Hsy looked at them seemingly to debate the pros and cons of granting their request.
However it wasn’t long before she gave in to her need to see grown men being idiots and she found herself driving. When they got there the pulled into a parking lot.
Nobody was there at first but then two men showed up.
One was a very plain looking man in a black button up and a Pizza Hut apron.
The other a very handsome man in a Dominos Apron.
“So you’re the apparently handsome man who thinks Domino’s sells pizza!” Shouted the plain looking one from about 20 ft away from the other.
“What do you mean, ‘sells pizza’ THATS WHAT WERE KNOWN FOR!” Bellowed the other from the same distance. “I wouldn’t call what you’re known for /pizza/!” The scrawny man taunted.
The handsomer man opened his mouth to reply but then paused.
“You- wait did you call me handsome earlier?” He asked befuddled.
The latter’s face went beet red. “W-well, yeah! Who wouldn’t,” he stuttered.”
The taller man seemed the think for a moment before stating,
“If you come to Domino’s we… /I/ could treat you a lot better than those guys at Pizza Hut.”
The other man seemed to short circuit for a moment. “B-but nobody out pizzas the Hut!” He said in a last ditch attempt to save his already fleeting dignity.
“Bet,” responded the other who then smirked devilishly.
Meanwhile lgy and sys were fighting over the left back window of the car for better view than the other. Hsy was simply enjoying the scene from the driver’s seat. They had their windows cracked slightly as to hear what was being said.
“10 bucks says they go out,” announced Hsy suddenly.
“I’ll take that bet! No way they’d go out!” Said Lgy. “Yeah! If you heard them on the phones you’d know!” Boasted Sys.
“We’ll just see,” mused Hsy.
Meanwhile in the parking lot, the men were at a standstill.
“What’s your name?” Said the skinnier man.
“Yjh, and yours?”
“Kdj”
“Well Kdj, you wanna come to the better pizza store and earn a date with me?” Said Yjh confidently.
Kdj let out a small “sure” and walked away.
Unfortunately he was so far away Yjh didn’t hear him.
“Well?!” He shouted
“I SAID SURE!” Kdj shouted back.
“GREAT! SEE YOU AT THE DOMINO’S BUILDING THIS SATURDAY”
“SEE YOU THEN!”
And just like that Lgy and Sys had orchestrated one of the best and most entertaining events of their little town.

thinking about joongdok in the early chapters......
rereading the orv novel and seeing things from yjhs perspective is so. augh. the first time you read it its soooo easy to trust kdjs perspective when he reads yjhs mind. his skill even tells him! "your understanding of this character is very high" surely hes interpreting him correctly :) then you read it again and realize how much kdj is filling in the gaps...... he expects yjh to be more callous, more jaded, more hardened than he actually is. hes been through 1863 regressions with yjh but this yjh is still only on the 3rd. and of course kdj learns this lesson himself much later on, but hes been misinterpreting yjh from the very beginning. hes just very good at justifying it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
this scene for example. (i am talking about the novel btw i just have. way more webtoon screenshots on hand. you understand.) kdj thinks it would be out of character for yjh to consider him an actual companion, so he rationalizes it. but once youre able to take yourself out of kdjs perspective, its really obvious by this point that yjh considers them companions??
he tested him with the sea monster (and waited by the river for 3 days for him to emerge, btw), and then again with the monsters in chungmuro. yes, he thinks about killing kdj quite a lot (out of caution) but its not like he ever follows through on it (something yjh from a later regression would be much less hesitant about). i havent gotten very far with my latest reread, but from memory - when hes paralyzed by poison he specifically asks for kdj. they fight side by side on several occasions, and specifically, kdj saves yjhs life multiple times. yjh criticizes him fairly often, but hes not needlessly cruel - just blunt. pointing out his flaws so he can work on them (and to keep him humble, lets be real). and of course, he desperately tries to save kdj when he gets blasted by 41!sys, and then flies into a mindless rage when kdj dies in his arms.
yeah, yjh isnt exactly upfront about his feelings, hes often off doing his own thing, and he gets PISSED when kdj manipulates him into doing his bidding (which happens fairly often in the early chapters) (he just wants you to communicate with him, damnit!) but like. its very very clear if you know where to look. and kdj DOESNT. but he thinks he does!!! augh i cant wait to get to the scene where they reintroduce themselves....... especially since its not like yjh knows kdj any better - he still thinks hes a prophet! there are so many levels of miscommunication going on here, but the important thing is. they care about each other. thats always what it comes down to, isnt it? they love each other. they want the best for each other. they would do anything to save each other. aughhhh orv.....

thinking about orv. how most people (including myself) started because of joongdok and some without knowing they weren’t canon lol.
my experience with orv was actually funny because i knew jd were only a fandom pair, so i didn’t have high expectations. however, while i read it i couldn’t even understand why they were so famous and half of the fandom liked them as a couple? me, a person who takes in bromance as canon romance in their heart, couldn’t see the hype?? that was a first. at that point (half of the novel) i already loved all the characters and didn’t care anymore about shipping, tho the other half sold me enough to like jd casually. THE THING IS orv is a novel made to hit the most when you reach the epilogue. those last 20 chapters redefine completely the reader's perception about what is orv, it changes orv to something even greater and emotional than it already was. when you finish it and you look at the broader picture and realize what just happened it’s like . you feel like you read the greatest love story of the century. take it in a romantic/platonic way of love or not, you actually don’t even care because of how much it transcends everything… you feel like it’s something bigger than love.
so yeah, i’m here enjoying jd and i personally think the cp vibes are too strong to ignore idk there’s far too many romantic tropes and that nirvana arc is an allegory on its own, BUT don’t get it twisted. whatever they have going on (+ hsy) is something so greater that just romantic love won’t ever be able to compete with. it’s soulmatism at its og form.
besides the epilogue shift, it’s also a matter of knowing the characters, after 500+ chapters you can tell when they’re lying (kdj i’m looking at you), what their actions mean and why they behave in a certain way, so when you look back there’s subtle and odd interactions everywhere. yjh smiling at kdj in the first chapters, for example, waiting for him to get out of the river for days and feeling disappointed when thinking he died— those were weird WEIRD things our yjh wouldn’t do normally, for anyone! much less for a random guy he just met!!! but we, as readers who have yet to know what is normal for yjh, don’t find it strange. in conclusion, everything you didn’t give much thought in your first read becomes gayer.
in conclusion, you naively hop in for the black & white gays and end up getting a much more sinister angsty queerer existencial something-something you will only understand when you finish the story. you won’t fully get orv until you reach the very last chapter and read the very last line!!!!

Can you list down the orpheus and euridyce moments? :o and whether it's doksoo/ joongdok/ yoohankim related
OK so to preface I'm sure people out there have done much more coherent analysis than me who just finished the novel last week but I'm gonna throw together some of my thoughts anyways:
The whole final third of the novel is the Orpheus/Eurydice Moment to me. Either the build up, the event, or the aftermath. And they're ALL yoohankim related like it's the three of them or it's nothing. Everything from reincarnation island onwards feels like it's foreshadowing the ending, in big obvious ways but also in small subtler ways. Also given the amount of greek mythology present in the story I'm sure it's deliberate lol.
The story of Orpheus/Eurydice at it's simplest is a man who loves a woman so much he'll go to the Underworld and try to get her back. And he almost does, he just has to walk back to the surface without looking back to make sure she's following. But of course he looks back. Because he loves her. He needs to see her, he loves her too much to risk never seeing her again. Even if it dooms them. He already lost her once, and his grief won't allow him to move forward so easily.
When yoohan get off the train with Dokja, they look back. When I read it I was like holyyyy shit they're both Orpheus and seeing the official art confirmed it for me.
Tumblr media
(Couldn't find the image without the text but anyways)
Dokja is their Eurydice. If they didn't look back, if they accepted 49% Dokja and kept moving forward... Well who knows for sure what would have happened but we do know that we wouldn't have gotten 49 Dokja swept up into 51 and then torn down until just a tiny version of himself remains, alive but comatose. We wouldn't have gotten the Dokkaebi King telling Han Sooyoung "You should have been content with 49% Kim Dokja."
But of course they would have never been content. The same way Orpheus could have never made it to the surface without looking back. They had to. Just like they have to keep trying, no matter what.
The thematic parallel to Orpheus for me is how they cannot let go of their grief. They love Dokja too much to settle for anything less than him being there with them in full. Orpheus was terrified on his way back up, convinced the Gods could be tricking him because he couldn't hear Eurydice's footsteps. What if she was just a shade? A shadow of the woman he originally loved?
He could never settle for that. They could never settle for that either. Only unlike Orpheus, who's solution was to die and see Eurydice again, these two go a little bit more bonkers with their grief filled reunion attempts. World line crossing, time travel, reality crossing, screaming and fighting your other Orpheus half because they're not playing along and pretending to heal from their grief, brainwashing authors from alternate universes into writing Dokja's story so they can bring him back...
I'm kind of curious what Orpheus in Orv's reaction would be to seeing those two repeat his story. Like is he happy or is he like wow those two do NOT know how to quit they're kind of embarrassing me right now.
But yeah if I'm yelling incoherently about yhk being Orpheus and Eurydice, this is the basics of what I'm talking about. Thanks for the ask!

Hi, do you know any fics of joongdok that retains Dokja's sass? Preferably an au because novel angst hurts. Tyy in advance.
OH BOY DO I *pulls up my [redacted number] pages of ao3 bookmarks* this is gonna be long so i'll put it under the cut!
okay so, some of these are a bit heavier on the humor than others, but in general i feel like these fics do a great job of retaining kdj's snarky personality!

[or: kim dokja keeps accidentally asking yoo joonghyuk out on dates. he swears it's only because he likes annoying the hell out of him. probably.]
When I said I hate isekai tropes, I wasn’t sarcastically praying for it to happen to me. by Waltzfor-Zizi(azro_zee)
Kim Dokja wants it on the record that he absolutely loathes those cringey royalty isekai stories and even more so the cliché archetype of cold and murderous but devastatingly handsome black-haired dukes with a troubled past. He really should learn by now that the universe has a hobby to throw him into the lion’s den and make him swallow his own words. After all, he and the God up there do not share the same taste of humor.
there are more but this is getting a bit long orz
i hope these are similar to what you're looking for! if you want any more recs feel free to let me know <3
EDIT: if you're looking for even more recs (and also some of my absolute faves) there's now a Part 2 here!

“I love you”
Joongdok high school AU
“Kim Dokja, I love you.”
Han Sooyoung suddenly grabbed his hand with a serious expression.
“W-what?”
“Haha you gotta see the look on your face dude!”
Han Sooyoung crackled while pointing at Dokja’s face.
“That’s not funny.”
He gave her an unimpressed look.
“Ah shit I couldn’t stop laughing haha. Do you know the “I love you” game? I saw it on the TV yesterday so I decided to give it a go. Didn’t really expect you to freak out like that LOL.”
Her laughters had died down but Kim Dokja could still see her trying her best to contain her laugh.
“Ah! I know it. You are supposed to say “I love you” to someone and if the other person laugh or smile then you win, right?” Yoo Sangah chimed in from where she was doing her homework.
“Correct! Oh and I love you Yoo Sangah.”
Han Sooyoung turned to where Yoo Sangah was and smiled sweetly at her.
“T-Thank you- Ah darn it! I smiled.”
Yoo Sangah unconsciously smiled at Han Sooyoung’s “confession”. Some of the nearby classmates caught wind of what they were doing and decided to join them. Before they knew it, the whole class had joined the game, the sentence “I love you” coming from one’s mouth to another. Everyone was busy with teasing each other except for a certain sleeping sunfish. Totally unaware of the the whole game going on, Yoo Joonghyuk was sleeping with headphones on, his head laying on the desk.
“Hey Kim Dokja.”
Han Sooyoung called out to him.
“If you dare to wake Yoo Joonghyuk up and play the game with him, I will treat you to McDonald’s after school today.”
“No thanks, I still treasure my life.”
He shuddered at the thought of being the recipient of one of Yoo Joonghyuk’s murderous glare. That glare could send one straight to the Antartica, he swore.
“How about me lending you my Star Stream account for a week?”
Star Stream is Kim Dokja’s favorite online reading site and Han Sooyoung just happened to have a VIP account on it. The monthly subscription fee was more than what he could afford so he had always been begging her to lend him the account.
“Deal. Remember to keep you word.”
Kim Dokja stood up and quickly walked toward Yoo Joonghyuk’s desk. He missed the knowing look and calculating smile Han Sooyoung had on her face whenever she was messing with someone.
“Joonghyuk-ah.”
He gently grabbed the other boy’s shoulders and shook them.
“Hm? Dokja-ah? What?”
Yoo Joonghyuk slowly looked up to him, his eyes still not fully opened.
“I love you.”
It was supposed to be a joke, but why did he feel all warm and fuzzy just by saying it?
“I love you too.”
The boy, with a small smile on his face, said it in a mellow tone. The usual glare were nowhere to be found as it was replaced by a soft gaze. Since he just woke up from the sleep, his expressions were totally relaxed, unlike the sharp look he liked to show around. Kim Dokja didn’t know that an undefended Yoo Joonghyuk could look that… cute. Was he supposed to feel this frustrated after seeing a friend’s smile?
Completely oblivious to Kim Dokja’s existential crisis, Yoo Joonghyuk went back to sleep, leaving a flustered mess of boiling red squid behind. On the other side of the classroom, Han Sooyoung whispered into Yoo Sangah’s ears:
“See, I told you. They are idiots.”

ok I'll bite. what's orv and how do I get into it
*defrosts the orv elevator pitch i have stored in my brain for any given situation* i'm glad u asked
Omniscient Readers Viewpoint aka orv is an action-adventure fantasy webnovel written by south-korean writer duo Sing-Shong and was serialised from 2018 to 2020, clocking in at 551 chapters and longer than the bible
Orv follows Kim Dokja who is Literally Just Some Guy and he's obsessed with a webnovel that he's been the sole reader of for 10+ years. Then one day the real world turns into the world from that novel but because he's the only one who has read the book, he knows exactly what will happen.
On the surface, orv is an isekai power fantasy except it's actually neither a power fantasy nor an isekai (and if you read far enough then the reveal of precisely how it is not an isekai will blow your mind. in my opinion!)
Even Kim Dokja, who at first (like. on the surface and in maybe the very first few chapters) seems like a really generic light novel protagonist(tm), actually turns out to be a really cuning unreliable narrator with his own tragic backstory and all.
Ultimately, i would say it's a story about identity and belonging, and it's about the power of storytelling, and it's about found family, and it's about love in all its forms.
What i want to say is that orv is not what it appears, because it's written as a subversion of a lot of things, and i think that's exactly what makes its messages hit so hard because it's a novel that's very self-aware of its nature as a novel, and knows how to use this fact to its advantage. If that makes any sense at all
Here's the carrd with some info and links about orv. The official translation is available at webnovel.com, but personally i (and many others) prefer to read the epub version which you can find here. The reason is that there were two english translators who translated/romanised things differently, so the epub file has been edited to standardise the spelling of names and terminology.
There's also an ongoing manhwa adaptation on webtoons.com, although personally i prefer to read it on flamescans.org!
Here's a previous ask i've answered about what orv is, and here's a much more eloquently written explanation by @tweetsongs. This post by @ot3 is also an excellent primer. And if you would like to get shipbaited into reading orv, i also have a list of my top 10 joongdok moments <3
tl;dr read orv 👍

Omniscient Reader's Viewpoint: JoongDok
Tumblr media
Honkai Star Rail: RenHeng
Tumblr media
a/n: this post WILL include SPOILERS from both fandoms, please DNI if you don't want to see shit
warning/s: ORV SPOILERS, HSR SPOILERS
"Tell me, you fool. If I continue to regress, will I ever get to meet you again?" — Yoo Joonghyuk
now we all know that kdj and yjh are 'companions'. kdj throughout his whole life, has continued to read the novel TWSA, it's an escape from reality. he found solace in TWSA and in it's protagonist. for over 3000 chapters in the 3,149 chapters of TWSA, he said and i quote, "I liked, hated, grumbled, and cheered Yoo Joonghyuk on. That's why I stuck with Yoo Joonghyuk for over 3,000 chapters."
meanwhile, yjh has regressed over 1000 more times just to see kdj again (see the quote above).
be it enemies, friends, companions, lovers, their stories are for and made for each other. hence, why they try their hardest to save each other.
literally damned fools IT HURTS.
Tumblr media
"Imbibitor Lunae... When will our retribution come? How can our debt be repaid?" —Blade
before the sins of their past, dan heng and blade were companions as well. ultimately, they were close until something caused all the falling out.
during dan heng's imprisonment, he read books. do you see where i'm going with this?
him reading was also an escape from reality, much like kdj. it was his hobby, his only routine to keep him from thinking back to what happened and what could've been.
years has passed yet blade still wishes to bring doom to dan heng, "Of five people, three must pay a price. You, are one of them."
dan heng tries to convince blade that he is no longer the person blade seeks to kill. yet, blade still sees dan feng no matter what and will fulfill his revenge. since, who else can he blame it on?
another set of doomed enemies, companions, lovers, whatever they may be.
Tumblr media
might i add, they are both considered to be black-white couples. they come in a pair, you van never separate them. these pictures made something snap inside of me and i needed to word vomit. companions that wish to either save or destroy each other, they somehow bring the best and worst in each other. all of that is the essence of doomed companions.
similar, if not the same, poses as seen in the pictures above. we have the readers on the same side and the person that wants to 'kill' them on the other same side; similar expressions, and last but definitely not least: heartbreaking stories.
if we add hsy + jing yuan to the mix, that's another set of depression.

So, after doing some digging for why was D. Gray Man Hollow cancelled or specifically why it became concerning, I found out that the studio released a poster featuring Allen and Kanda in rather scandalizing position.
So here is the debate weather Hoshino-sensai got angry because of the poster or the fact that they published it without her permission.
And, dose she hate Yullen?
I think it has more to do with the fact that they published it without her permission. As we know that Hoshino-sensai is more or less dipping her toes in the LGBTQ community. We have Alma who can be considered non binory. And we also have his complicated yet simple relationship with Kanda which rivals a romantic relationship. I would say it's one of the most heart wrenching canon relationship of the whole series. It breath taking how much thoughts and emotions Hoshino-sensai puts into their relationship. She went beyond gender boundaries to create what is presented to us.
So I don't think it has anything to do with the 'Homophobic' thingy that happens with most of the mangaka.
So does it means that she is solely against Yullen?
Well. I don't think so.
If you guys are manga readers or even anime watchers [ though I suggest to only anime Readers to check out the manga cause it's far ahead of where the anime ended. Please, you won't regret one bit. ] You will notice just how thoughtfully crafted Allen and Kanda's relationship is. From the 1st chapter of the manga and the 2nd episode of the anime we are greated with their constantly heated relationship. From physical fights and taunting insults to getting to know eachother more then any one, knowing eachother's deepest secrets and understanding eachother more then anyone. Dose it looks like Hoshino-sensai is near any where near done? Their insults no longer hold that malice anymore. Kanda was the one to find out that Allen's hold on the 14th was breaking. Allen was the one to see a part of Kanda he didn't want anyone to see. Kanda was one of the few people to see through Allen's perfectly crafted mask.
And don't even forget the fact that giving Kanda and Alma freedom was the reason for Allen's demise or the fact that Kanda came back for Allen's sake, to pay him back and now he is constantly fighting his innocence from making him a fallen. That just how much important their relationship is to the manga. Oh and I totally forgot the borderline Possessive behaviour Kanda is showing towards Link for Allen's sake.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Look me in the eye and say that this isn't Possessiveness or protectiveness in Kanda's own trigger happy way.
[ you know what? This scene reminds me so much of Joongdok. If you don't know what Joongdok is, it's a borderline canon ship of the manhwa and webnovel series called Omniscient Reader Viewpoint. I totally recommend to check it out if you're a fan of apocalyptic fantasy, borderline isekai, unreadable narrative of a lovable yet 'I wanna smack some sense into him' MC, angst and good, plot heavy storyline with complex and good Characters with, of course homoerotic subtext, check it out! ]
They have a big role to play and I don't think Hoshino-sensai will let something so petty hinder her works. As I have read Hoshino-sensai's works just like other dedicated fans of this manga, Hoshino-sensai values her Characters too much to let something so petty get to them. And I respect her for that. Treating you're characters as, well like real individual can help.
It has to be Kanda who can chase down Allen. Lenalee, though a very strong individual but she is far too soft towards Allen to actually drag him down. Lavi as a bookman cannot get personallity involved with any of their business has to stay in the sidelines. And yup. That poor guy is held captive by the Noah's.
Kanda is not soft like Lenalee nor does he cares about anything the order says. The sole purpose for him return into his personal hell is to stick with Allen untill the end. He is the one who can rival Allen in stubbornness.
Not to mention we have this;
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This
Tumblr media
And this
Tumblr media
And yes they're officials by Hoshino-sensai herself. So, antis you have this.
They contrast eachother. They compliment each yet blend into eachother flawlessly.
Let be true here. The last thing I am concerned about is the romance. D. gray man is far better for this. Hoshino-sensai has her unique style to write relationships between characters. So I am not necessarily concerned about the non existent romantic sub plot because I am better of worrying weather Allen will get his happy ending at the or not. I really don't mind if this series doesn't even have a romantic relationship canonically involving Allen cause he needs love as any form of love that has to offer. Plotanic relationship holds more value anyways.
I am really curious about what you guys think about the subject. I will be glad to hear. I don't know how to end this...so I will just leave it here.

Saw your Tweet and was wondering about JD animal shifter AU with your touch 🥺🙏🏻
[Here you go!! I hope you like it! It's only barely joongdok (their relationship is still developing at this point since it's just the first meeting lol), but I tried😂]
tw for: attempted kidnapping / panic attacks
※DO NOT REPOST / HOST MY WORK ON OTHER APPS OR SITES
Shapeshifting, for all that it’s a cool idea in theory, is not quite as fun when you’re already an animal shifter yourself.
History knows it well. How witches were burned at the stake, how suspected (not even confirmed, at that) werewolves could just as easily be killed with the slightest of hints of attraction to the full moon, how certain animals are just bad, bad luck regardless of how innocent they are.
And because Kim Dokja is the luckiest bastard on earth, of course, he’s a black cat shifter.
It’s fine. He’s fine.
He’s lived as himself for twenty years now. He’s had to live without both parents—his father, murdered; his mother, incarcerated—and he’s lived long enough to prove that cats might actually just have nine lives after all, so he can safely say he’s doing well enough. Though animal shifters aren’t quite as accepted in society yet, there’s at least some kind of progress that they aren’t immediately murdered or thrown into slavery like before.
As if being able to transform into an animal was any reason to be treated inhumanely, when even pure humans themselves could be more monstrous than any shifter.
Anyway.
Animal shifters are, essentially, a little bit more accepted in society now as compared to decades past.
That doesn’t mean there aren’t exceptional circumstances.
Like now—
He can clearly see the wolf-eared child being cornered into an alleyway by a man with a collar in hand. Dokja’s not an idiot, for all that he’s not often caught up on the news; he knows it’s a shock collar just from the small machine attached to the back of the leather.
Shit. This is really not his day. It’s already too dark that causing a scene might be more of a risk than it would have been had it been daytime, where he could just as easily lie and the man would sooner run than be seen in broad daylight.
But it’s a child. A child.
Damn it.
He takes out his phone, dials 112, and doesn’t bother to wait for the beep when he loudly says, “Hello, police? I have a crime to report—”
“Fuck!”
The man swiftly looks toward him. Out of the alleyway and into the light, where his face is likely lit up by the streetlamps.
He thinks he might have to fight, for as much as his limp, noodly arms can bother punching a larger man. His heart is pumping away in his ears and he feels terrified, feels scared out of his wits, but not enough to actually turn tail and leave the child behind.
Then the child kicks the man in the groin just hard enough that he buckles over, kicks him again in the side of the knee until he’s stumbling, before doing a little jump and spin that has her foot tapping at his temple until he’s down onto the ground. It all happens so fast that Dokja can’t speak, can’t breathe, can’t even try to do anything to help the little girl until he notices the gleam of sharp metal in the man’s hand.
“That’s—!”
She stomps on the man’s hand to disarm him, ignoring his scream when she picks up the knife.
She’s small. She’s so small, yet when she holds the pocket knife in her hand, she doesn’t shake one bit.
Dokja doesn’t know if it’s the adrenaline from being in a dangerous situation.
He doesn’t know why, but his vision blurs.
It was already dark, but it’s getting darker instead of clearer as he struggles to look at the child. Like he’s hypnotized, his gaze zones in on that glint of metal in her hand—the only clear thing in his view until his vision shakes again.
He can’t breathe. His body is starting to feel numb, like he’s losing control of his own limbs, his own breath. He feels cold.
He can’t breathe, but why?
“—ssi?”
What’s wrong with him?
“Ahjussi!”
He stumbles, but doesn’t fall. There’s something smaller than him propping him up, even if he can’t see what it is. All he knows is that it’s soft, like a fluffy pillow, though a little firmer than that.
It’s not enough to distract him from how dizzy he feels. He feels sick. His chest hurts.
Is he dying?
“—ssi, ahjussi—”
He groans, and closes his eyes. He figured he’d die eventually, but he hadn’t thought that death would feel like this. It feels suffocating. Like drowning, even when there’s no water in his mouth, or nose.
Everything hurts.
Why is it so dark? Why can’t he move his body?
He doesn’t know how much time has passed like that when a larger, firmer body holds him up.
“Hey.”
He struggles to open his eyes. There’s a hot hand to his forehead, keeping his head up as he blinks dazedly down at the floor.
His chest still feels tight, but it’s looser than before. He can breathe short, wheezing breaths. When he tries to straighten up and away from the hand on his head, another stronger arm tucks him right back in.
What?
“Huh..?”
“You had a panic attack,” a male voice says. The voice is deep, soothing, just enough that he finds his eyes fluttering shut again. “My sister helped you.”
“Sister..?”
“I’m Yoo Mia, ahjussi.”
A child’s voice this time. He blinks weary eyes open, pulls his head away from the hand on his forehead, and finds himself being faced with the very child he’d been trying to save earlier. Her ears are back to human ears now, and she looks, frankly, very adorable.
She’s a child who didn’t need his rescue attempt in the first place, given how she handled herself just fine.
“Yoo Mia, huh,” he says, smiling a brittle smile. He blinks again when she tries to hand him a bottle of what looks like water. “What?”
“You need to keep hydrated,” she says decisively, frowning as she steps away to walk by his side.
Wait, walking?
“Wha—”
“Don’t struggle, or I’ll carry you over my shoulder.”
He stops in the middle of pushing away from the body that’s holding him up. When he looks up, it’s to the sight of a handsome, frowning profile of a man. “What?”
“Take the bottle and drink.”
This bastard..?
“Drink, ahjussi,” says the child again, before poking the bottle of water right into his chest. “You need it.”
“...thank you.”
She uncaps the bottle for him, before gingerly taking his hand and wrapping his fingers around the body of the bottle. It would be a cute gesture, if he hadn’t just come back from what he felt was a near-death experience.
After taking a short sip of water, he asks, “The man..?”
“From earlier? We took care of him,” Mia says. She sounds a little too chipper for a kid who’d almost been kidnapped. “Right, oppa?”
“Mm.”
Something tells him he shouldn’t ask further on that. Instead, he asks, “And you’re taking me where..?”
“Our place,” Mia answers for him. “Are you a shifter too, ahjussi?”
Her brother seems to be frowning when he says, “Mia.”
“He tried to save me, and he smells like a cat, so I had to ask!”
“Aha,” he laughs. He feels like he’s losing his mind, really. He doesn’t know what’s going on, doesn’t know if he can trust these two, but Mia is just a child. He ends up answering, “Yes. I’m…a cat.” He scrunches his nose a little, and sighs. “You’re both wolves?”
“Yes.” “That’s right!”
“Okay,” he says, closing his eyes again. If her brother minds him leaning further into his weight, he doesn’t show it. “Okay. What are you going to do with me, when we’re at your place?”
“We’ll let you rest, since you must be really tired. Don’t you want to shift, ahjussi? My oppa’s very warm, and cats like warm things, right?”
“Mia…”
“Oppa, it’d be easier on you too, wouldn’t it?”
Dokja laughs.
He laughs, even when nothing is particularly funny. He’s sure he must look insane. Just earlier, he felt like he was dying, and now, he was being taken home by a pair of wolf-shifter siblings.
His laughter dies down into wheezing breaths, and he rests his cheek against the other man’s shoulder. “Hey,” he says, blinking slowly as he looks up at his helper’s face. The man’s expression is frozen for some reason, though Dokja can’t be bothered to try and understand why. “What’s your name?”
A beat.
Then,
“...Yoo Joonghyuk.”
“Yoo Joonghyuk,” he parrots, blinking dazedly as he looks out at the empty streets. “I’m Kim Dokja. And…I’ll shift. Would you mind if..?”
Joonghyuk takes him away from the streetlamps and down an empty alleyway, seeming to have understood his signal with only the barest of promptings. Yoo Mia is just as observant when she promptly turns around, serving as their watchdog (hah) as he shifts into a cat in the darkness.
Neither of them bat an eye as they pack up the clothes he’d dropped mid-shift into their bag.
“We’ll take care of you, ahjussi,” Mia promises, looking up as he curls into a ball in Joonghyuk’s arms. (For a child, she has admirable self-control; she doesn’t pet him, not even once.) “So, don’t worry and sleep.”
He gives a little meow in response. He thinks if he might hold up for a little more, if he should keep an eye on the road for any landmarks on the way to their place.
That’s what he thinks, but his body decides otherwise.
He dozes off soon enough, lulled into sleep by the rhythmic sound of Joonghyuk’s heartbeat, and the gentle sway of his body as he walks.
(In his slumbering state, he misses the way Joonghyuk’s expression twists with confusion when he starts purring in his arms, and the way that Mia starts giggling away in her amusement at them.)

Joongdok.
Where Yoo Joonghyuk, codenamed Regressor, is a notorious thief in town, having stolen billions of dollars worth of jewels, paintings, and antiques. No matter how frequent his crimes are, the police could not capture such a thief. Kim Dokja is just an average salaryman with an average salary and an average life. He has no idea about any recent news in his small town, sure he had heard about some thieves stealing around the neighborhood, but isn’t that a normal occurrence? He does not care about all of it, as long as he can have a meal on his table, he does not care about anything else.
Kim Dokja slowly walked back to his apartment and bought a bottle of soju along with his cheap dinner for the day. He stumbled upon his neighbor’s child, a college student named Yoo Joonghyuk, on the way home.
"Hyuk-ah! Good evening," he greeted, smiling as he saw the young man.
"Dokja hyung, welcome back." Yoo Joonghyuk nodded and greeted back.
"What are you doing here? It’s a bit chilly, noh?" he asked.
Yoo Joonghyuk’s ear flushed red and he mumbled something. Kim Dokja had to lean a bit, but he could not hear what he was saying.
"Sorry, Hyukkie, I could not hear you. Can you repeat it?"
Yoo Joonghyuk cleared his throat and repeated what he said,
"I said, I was waiting for you. You were a bit late from your usual."
"Awee, is my cute dongsaeng waiting for me? Thank you, Jonghyuk -ah!" Kim Dokja grinned as he tipped his toe, trying to ruffle the taller man’s hair.
"Hyung, stop that.." yet Yoo Joonghyuk did not do anything to stop Kim Dokja from making a mess of his hair.
"Did you have dinner already?" Kim Dokja asked.
"I did. I have something to do today."
"Is that so? Too bad. You go now, you might be late with whatever your plan is today."
Yoo Joonghyk nodded.
"Let’s eat next time, Hyung. Don’t eat those cheap food, you might get a stomachache."
Kim Dokja chuckled,
Yes, yes. Now go."
Yoo Joonghyuk nodded and then left.
Kim Dokja watched as Yoo Joonghyuk left, and shook his head, laughing a bit.
‘This kid really is so cute, he thought, and he went to his apartment.
That night, while eating his now-cold food in front of the television, he heard the fascinating local breaking news.
"Breaking news, Regressor has struck once again! This time its target is the pocket watch dated way back in the 1600's owned by the young Prince Ricardo and given to him by the now-then King, King Schweitzen von Kaizenix. It is said to be priced at more than 50 Billion USD. The police have been on the run trying to capture the infamous thief."
"Well, damn, he muttered.
"Not my problem." He shrugged and switched to the nighttime drama for which he had been waiting all day.
The next morning, everyone was talking about the stolen piece and Regressor. Kim Dokja may not care, but he does love drama, and so drama he listens.
"I can't believe a guy like him just stole the memento like that!"
"Who really cares? I just think Regressor is THAT cool."
"..."
"What?"
"I really can't understand your taste in men."
Kim Dokja can't help but snicker as he listens to the teens beside him on the moving train.
His day went normal and boring fast. As he was about to clock out, he heard a ping on his phone.
He let out a chuckle when he saw it was from his cute neighbor's kid.
"Hyung, don't stay too late today and stay warm, it reads.
Kim Dokja quickly typed out a response.
Really a caring kid, he'd hate to see him grow.
Today, Kim Dokja plans to buy his dinner at a new place, just beside the newly opened museum. When he arrived at the local restaurant, there were a lot of people. The police were everywhere. Feeling a bit curious, he decided to ask the staff.
"What's happening here?"
"You didn't know?" she replied along with a raised eyebrow.
Kim Dokja awkwardly laughed.
"No, not really."
"Regressor apparently plans on stealing something at the museum. It's why the police are on the lookout."
"I see." He paid for his food and left.
Just as he passed the museum, he was pushed by a lot of people. Everyone was shouting and screaming, and the police were out to get someone. And Kim Dokja's face planted on the ground, his food left forgotten.
Kim Dokja wanted to cry.
He slowly stood up and stared at the food that was wasted on the ground pitifully.
"Get out of the way! Regressor just flew away! Someone shouted at him and shoved him.
"Sorry, he just mumbled.
He tried his best to get off the ground. His knees and palms are aching,
"It hurts, he huffs.
Then, all of a sudden, someone grabs him. Their arms were around his back and behind his knees.
And then he flew.
Kim Dokja wasted no time scolding them. He latched onto the person who took him away and screamed.
He closed his eyes and began to curse.
"What the fuck? Don't you dare let go of me. I will drag you to hell-"
Below them was a series of cheers, screams, and screeches.
The person holding Kim Dokja cracks a laugh.
"Hyung, that's not even a harsh curse."
"HUH?!?"
That voice?? ,
"Yoo Joonghyuk?"
The man, whose eyes were hidden, smirked.
Kim Dokja ultimately passed out.
When he woke up, he was at his old apartment, and Yoo Joonghyuk was sleeping beside him. He had to pinch himself hard,
He groaned.
"This can't be happening. I'm fucked, he mumbled over and over again. Then Yoo Joonghyuk pulled him back to bed and snuggled closely to Kim Dokja.
"Hyung, it's still so early. Go back to bed."
Kim Dokja blushed, the dusty red was all over his face.
"YAH! This crazy kid! Let go of me! I need to talk to you! He tried to slap Yoo Joonghyuk, but even though his speck was hard, he bit his lips enviously.
Yoo Joonghyuk blinks, he prompts himself to face directly at the older man, while still holding Kim Dokja's waist.
"Hyung, I'm not a kid."
Kim Dokja huffs,
"Then what are you, old man?"
"Can I just be a man who's going to start courting you?"
"W-what?"
If Kim Dokja was drinking water, he'd be choking right now.
"You're always like this, Hyung. You keep treating me like a kid even when I like you this much."
"N-no, no no. You can't like me?!?!"
Yoo Joonghyuk shook his head, and his curly strand of hair followed his movement.
"I stole those pieces for you, Hyung. Can't you like me just a little bit?" He said softly. Placing a chaste kiss on Kim Dokja's hand as he blinks slowly while maintaining his eye on the older man.
SOS! The kid from my next-door apartment said he likes me, so he steals expensive stuff for me?! What should I do! wuwuwu.

accident, a comedy in three parts
Dokja’s brain was on fire like he was dying, which was weird, because he was always calm when he was dying. This was notably different.
It’d started with a phone call.
I
Dokja was biting his lip while the phone rang.
Junghyeok groaned from the other end of the line as soon as he picked up. “It’s you.”
Dokja cringed. He could clearly imagine him rolling his eyes or pinching the bridge of his nose.
“Hello, Junghyeok.” He tried his best to sound pleasant, but overdid it just a notch.
It was supposed to be a sign to Junghyeok that this was a part of the game they were playing. A game where Junghyeok pretended like he was annoyed at Dokja at all times, and Dokja pretended like he still needed to put on a charismatic and joking persona whenever they were together.
As ironic as it was, it seemed like they were both still regressing through the past. Dokja didn’t know why either of them kept playing this absurd theatre, or when they might tire of it.
But fresher in his memory was the coffee he had gotten with Junghyeok just last week. The movie they watched together with Jihyee this month, and the time Junghyeok had babysitting duty two months ago when Dokja had to do overtime at work. The list went on. Dokja’s chest tightened when he thought about it. He didn’t know who they were trying to fool. Maybe it was themselves. They were the hardest ones to fool, after all.
There wasn’t anyone easier to fool than one’s own heart.
“It’s 10 P.M,” Junghyeok monotoned, but Dokja heard tiredness seep into his words. He doubted many people would’ve noticed it.
“I just need ten seconds,” Dokja pleaded, faking exasperation.
“Nine.”
“Hear me out, you grump.” Dokja sighed loudly.
Junghyeok echoed his sigh, albeit more quietly. Dokja knew he would hear him out. Before he could continue, however-
“Are the kids okay?” Junghyeok interjected.
“Well, funny you ask…” Dokja’s tone was sheepish.
Junghyeok stayed silent. Dokja’s next words were vital. He decided to spit it out.
“I need your help. Can you come over?”
“What happened?” Junghyeok’s tone rose slightly, which, for him, meant he was as good as shouting.
“Nobody’s hurt, everything’s fine, I could just really use your expertise.”
“That’s fishy, coming from you.” He was totally being judgemental, Dokja thought.
“I’ll owe you one,” Dokja grit out.
“I’ll be there in 20.”
“Don’t drive too fast-“
Junghyeok hung up midway through “too”.
Dokja massaged his temple. That was as good as a middle finger Junghyeok could give him over the phone. Nonetheless, Dokja knew he would come. He started preparing.
Approximately twenty two minutes later, Junghyeok was standing in front of Dokja’s door. Dokja opened the door after the first knock; thankfully Junghyeok had the brains not to ring the bell.
“You’re late.” Dokja grinned.
Junghyeok raised his eyebrow and huffed, then unceremoniously pushed past him.
“Quiet, the kids are asleep,” Dokja scolded.
Junghyeok quickly took off his shoes and put on the slippers Dokja got for him after the third time he’d stayed the night.
“So they’re fine?”
“They’re fine. Now leave your things there and go wash your hands.”
Junghyeok smirked. “Do you order all your guests around?”
“Only the difficult ones,” Dokja hissed back.
Junghyeok just turned around and went to do as he was told, not really needing the instructions in the first place.
Once he was alone, Dokja took a deep breath and willed his face into a neutral expression. Bickering with Junghyeok must’ve made him heated.
Junghyeok found him in the kitchen, apron on, sleeves rolled up to his elbows, staring intensely at the bowl in front of him.
“Are you going to explain what this is all about or can I go home?”
Dokja startled when he heard the familiar voice in his ear. He almost elbowed Junghyeok, but luckily, Junghyeok had foreseen that and gently lowered his arms back to his sides.
“Jerk,” Dokja mumbled, turning to face him.
“I am going to ignore that for your sake.” Junghyeok crossed his arms and glared at Dokja.
“All right, all right, settle down. You know how it’s Yuseung’s birthday in two days…”
Junghyeok must’ve know long ago already where he was going with this but he was going to make him beg, wasn’t he.
“Her adoption day, yes,” he nodded and added quietly, to Dokja’s surprise.
Dokja throat tightened suddenly, but he continued.
“Yes, and I promised I’d make us a cake. Gilyeoung, bless him, immediately decreeded it was, unfortunately, above my abilites, and that she should prepare for disappointment.”
Junghyeok’s face almost stretched into a grin, but his lips remained pressed together. He was looking more amused by the second.
“He wasn’t wrong.”
“I knew he was wrong, but I didn’t immediately correct him out of the goodness of my heart and my love for my children. And today I’m doing a test-run for the cake, to make sure it can satisfy even the most judgemental of judges.” Dokja glared at Junghyeok.
Junghyeok simply smirked. “And?”
Dokja screwed his eyes shut.  “I-messed-it-up-will-you-please-help-me-Junghyeok.”
“You owe me one.”
Dokja quickly nodded, still not daring to open his eyes.
“For the record, I’m not doing anything. I’ll just be providing instructions. Show me the recipe.”
Dokja nodded again.
II
Dokja was leaning against the countertop with both hands, staring in awe at the tallest cake he’d ever attempted to make. It was nearly two o’clock, although neither of them knew. They hadn’t checked their phones the entire time they’d been baking, and Dokja’s kitchen didn’t have a clock.
“Not bad.” Dokja almost started salivating at the sight of the pale green cake covered with colorful gummy bears.
He’d been awake since 5 to help Gilyeoung and Yuseung get ready for school and to get himself ready for work. It was routine at this point, but staying up to practice baking didn’t help in making him any less tired. He tried not to let it show too much around the kids, but it was always different with Junghyeok for whatever reason. Some of his most closely kept, unconscious inhibitions got unlocked without him knowing or wanting it to happen whenever he was alone with Junghyeok.
Junghyeok’s arm bumped into his when he leaned closer to inspect their work. He scoffed. “Passable. If we had more time and other ingredients, maybe…” He sighed. “I could make a better one for her, of course-“
“Stupid show-off,” Dokja mumbled more on reflex, as he was still completely mesmerized by the cake.
“-but she wanted a cake from you, and you did well, Dokja,” Junghyeok finished quietly.
That stopped Dokja in his tracks. He wasn’t expecting a compliment from Yu Junghyeok. Especially not after hours of hushed arguing in his kitchen in the wee hours of the night. Over the best way to crack eggs or mix in ingredients, Junghyeok acting smug the whole time, no doubt because Dokja had begged for his help. When Dokja pointed it out, he wholeheartedly denied the whole deal. But after that he was even stricter whenever Dokja was about to make what must have been a blasphemous mistake in the culinary world.
Player: Dokja. Gaming strategy: too tired to process a heartfelt compliment from Junghyeok. Action: deflect.
“You know what this cake is missing? The writing! Hang on, I think we have some chocolate sprinkles left over…”
Dokja reached over to open the cupboard in front of Junghyeok’s face, pressing into his side and getting up on his tiptoes to reach the elusive sprinkles.
A surprised gasp left Junghyeok’s lips, but it went unheard. He grabbed onto Dokja’s shoulders to regain his balance, which only made Dokja lose his in turn. Junghyeok fell backwards and slammed against the cabinets, his hands pulling Dokja with him, silencing the gasps in both of their throats when their mouths landed against each other.
Dokja’s brain was on fire like he was dying, which was weird, because he was always calm when he was dying. This was notably different.
Junghyeok’s lips were chapped and dry from their lengthy midnight conversations. His strong fingers were digging uncomfortably into Dokja’s shoulders, and his body was pressed flush again Dokja’s own.
A feeling was violently making itself known in Dokja’s chest, breaking its long-time containment. It all made him realize this was real real real real.
Junghyeok pushed him away and righted him on his feet. Two seconds, and it was over. Dokja had no choice but to gather his bearings fast, because a mad Junghyeok was never pleasant to deal with.
“I’m sorry-”
“You should be more careful.” Junghyeok’s expression was by no means a happy one, but he wasn’t looking at Dokja nor were his eyes particularly murderous, which was surprising.
“I know, I’m sorry.” Dokja sighed. He peeked behind Junghyeok to find the cake still intact. “At least the cake was saved.”
“If you’d managed to ruin it, it would be your fault, and yours alone.”
“You pulled me, remember?”
They were both biting, and it was no longer a game. Dokja was tired, and a lingering feeling of Junghyeok made it hard to think straight.
He slowly leaned his back against the countertop next to Junghyeok, keeping a safe distance from him.
“I was going to write something on the cake with sprinkles,” he began quietly.
“It certainly doesn’t need it.” Junghyeok scoffed, but Dokja could tell it was good-naturedly. His heart eased a little. From relief that Junghyeok wasn’t that mad, or from something else, he didn’t know.
“But?” he prompted, grinning weakly and looking over at Junghyeok.
“I’ll allow it.” Junghyeok gave a small smile then, and Dokja didn’t know how much he could miss chapped lips and fingers cutting into his shoulders and a warm, secure body against his. Fuck.
Dokja’s grin lit up his face, and he reached for the sprinkles, carefully this time. Junghyeok comically leaned to the side to give him a wide berth.
“Har har.”
Dokja slowly and painstakingly attempted to arrange the sprinkles on the cake by letting them fall from his hand.
He felt Junghyeok rolling his eyes to sky, but he was too preoccupied with his task to look. He was handed the bag with sprinkles and warm hands guided his to expertly spell a big 11 on the cake. He chanced a glance behind his shoulder, and Junghyeok was smiling. Dokja’s face could only mirror it and reflect it thousandfold. It was then he thought Junghyeok’s face might’ve blanked with an expression he couldn’t read.
III
The birthday cake had been safely stored in the deepest part of the fridge.
“It’s not bad for a trial run cake,” Junghyeok said as Dokja placed a tea cup in front of him on the table. “Thank you.”
Dokja settled into the chair opposite him with a heavy sigh.
“No way this was a trial run. We’re eating this thing on Yuseung’s birthday, and that’s that. I don’t have it in me to make another.”
“You barely had it in you to make this one.” Junghyeok took a sip of his tea.
“Maybe if someone wasn’t such a demanding teacher!” Dokja pointedly said.
“How else are you going to learn?”
“Not by asking you next time, that’s for sure.”
“Thank the heavens.” Junghyeok dramatically held onto his heart with both hands.
Dokja clicked his tonue, and Junghyeok had the gall to look smug.
“Work tomorrow?”
Dokja shook his head.
“You should get some sleep anyway. You have a birthday party to plan.”
“That’s already done. Mostly. I still need to go shopping, though.”
Junghyeok hummed in response. They were silent for a while, lost in their respective thoughts and the pressure of the late hours that sat on their shoulders.
“I’ll leave you to it, then.” Junghyeok got up, but before he could take a step from the table, Dokja rose as well and put a hand on his shoulder.
“You’re staying here. You shouldn’t drive when it’s this late.”
“I’m still perfectly fine to drive back home.”
“Don’t argue with me, gamer. Go to the guest room, why do you think I have one?”
Satisfied with the look of resignation on Junghyeok’s face, Dokja turned to go to his room.
“Goodnight.” He yawned.
“Wait.” Junghyeok called out.
Before he could react, Dokja was swept into Junghyeok's arms. Junghyeok had one arm wrapped around his waist, the other cupping his cheek, and he softly pressed his lips to Dokja's.
Dokja's knees almost gave out. They parted, but their faces stayed close enough to feel each other's breath. Junghyeok was looking at him like he was the brightest star in the night sky.
“Goodnight, Dokja,” Junghyeok whispered as he gently moved Dokja's bangs out of his eyes.
“Do you really mean it?” Dokja's face was bright red, and his heart was trying to beat its way out of his chest and into Junghyeok's. He had to know.
“Dokja, Dokja, Dokja,” Junghyeok whispered reverently, and the dam broke.
Dokja threw his arms around Junghyeok's neck and kissed him passionately. Junghyeok didn't waste a single moment to pull Dokja closer and press their bodies together, deepening the kiss, making Dokja moan. He responded to Junghyeok's intensity with his own, grabbing a fistful of Junghyeok's hair and
pulling him down towards him.
Junghyeok made a soft sound that spurred Dokja to claim his lips for his, and taste them fully, like he'd dreamed of doing in some forgotten and repressed longings. Junghyeok held onto him tighter, moved with him, tasted Dokja like he'd hungered for years and Dokja was his favourite meal. They were both panting when they parted for air, Dokja's forehead pressed against Junghyeok's cheek, and his arms wrapped tightly around his neck.
Neither said anything for a moment, as erratic heartbeats tried to slow down and beat in tandem.
“Will you kiss me like this tomorrow?” Dokja breathed out, chuckling and still in disbelief.
“It's already tomorrow,” Junghyeok murmured, tightening his hold on Dokja and leaning into him.
“I'll... I'll kiss you every day if you want me to. For as long as you want.” Dokja could barely believe what he was hearing. His heart soared with happiness, and he got up on his tiptoes to press a kiss to the corner of Junghyeok's mouth.
“I'd like that a lot,” he said quietly.
Junghyeok closed his eyes and sighed softly. A sigh Dokja knew was reserved for him.
“We'll talk tomorrow, Mr. Yu. You should go to that guest room now.”
Junghyeok hummed, but neither moved. Then finally, Junghyeok carefully extracted himself from Dokja's arms and stepped away.
“See you in the morning, then?” It was a quiet question, unsure, almost, and it wanted for an answer. An answer Dokja was more than willing to provide.
“See you in the morning.”

What I Liked
the plot the character dynamics the romance the Pining and Yearning and Pain,,,,,, i thought i was gna get some fun kooky adventure abt saving the world not an Epic Adventure infused with Extensive Slow Burn and a generous helping of Angst
goddamn the nonconfession quotes this wn in general is so quotable and the tl is so beautiful to read
in general xiang shu/chen xing as a cp is so... sigh their dynamics, the way they banter and argue and get to know each other and eventually fall in love, ughhh the secret that chen xing kept abt his lifespan, how he was holding back from falling in love bc he couldn't just leave xiang shu behind, how xiang shu so desperately tried to keep chen xing alive, the i love you that's said in between the lines but never aloud, the moonshell bracelets... THE SLEDDING............ im so sad i love them shuxing invented love
the fact that this wn is literally one of those isekai style regression plot that goes "when chen xing woke up, he found himself 3 years before his death, on the journey to save the world... can he gather his companions and save all those he cared about? can he finally be lovey dovey with his martial god protector??" except it spends 2/3 of the story injecting the readers with Pain of the first cycle before the second cycle comes...
somewhere around the first half i was like, so this is what romantic joongdok is like huh. bc they rly gave that sort of vibe. the mc who puts the world above himself, who keeps running around? disappearing? and whenever he disappears it puts the ml in a frenzy lmao. and the ml, taciturn and tsundere but cares abt the mc beyond what words can describe. chen xing will light up the whole world with the heart lamp but chen xing himself is the light of xiang shu's world /crying
oh man the chars... tuoba yan my sweet eternal 2ml... xiao shan, shuxing's adopted son... xie an who i was rly sus abt but he lowkey became one of the best n most reliable team member, we stan an actual functioning adult... feng qianjun who rly impressed me when he chose gu qing over princess qinghe... everyone is so good!! characterized so well!!
i like that the main story basically ended w the implication that shuxing r undergoing their three-month long honeymoon in the middle of the wilderness which they will spend to bone for every. single. day.
What I Disliked
ok i do love happy endings but even i have to admit the regression was quite an asspull lmao
Quotes
"...It's truly a pity that thousands of years later, the seas have become mulberry fields, and though the land has not changed, the people have long since disappeared." (has big "osmanthus wine tastes the same as i remember but where are those who share the memories" vibes 💀 this is a sad quote but i cant help it...)
"...stay with me, and let's finish this journey, and I'll forever remember... in this world, there is someone who cares so much about me he would call in all of his friends and scatter away all of his family fortune... just so I can keep on living, and stay by my side." "I will also remember, that in this world, there was once someone... who was willing to burn up all of his mortal and immortal souls just to become a blazing lamp that shines gloriously upon this world." (ch 86)
"Let's go. Don't care about it anymore. Tomorrow, no matter what happens to the Central Plains, don't care about it anymore. Nod, and I'll take you away. Do you want to go?"
"The wind will still, and the snow will melt... Where you are is my place of solace." (ch 120)
Notes
have not had a quotes section in a long long while but i can't help it, some lines r just /chef's kiss
i should've screenshotted the quotes for easier archiving...
also keeping title as dinghai fusheng lu vs record bc tianbao is also lu n i like keeping things consistent lmao

WHY CAN’T I LISTEN TO MUSIC WITHOUT IMAGINING THOSE TWO??
IT’S ALL JOONGDOK’s FAULT
anyway here’s what happens when music makes me think orv things
* Running up that hill (a deal with God)
This makes me think about the demon king arc where Kdj and Yjh fought over who would become the demon king. First thing that came to mind was how Kdj refused to let Yjh become the demon king now this might be because that rat bastard always has a plan and had to become the demon king for his plan but what if another reason is because Kdj couldn’t bear killing Yjh. Yjh’s story was the reason Kdj survived for so long. He kept reading his story for years (like 10? idr) and that motivated him to survive.
From thinking ‘what would yjh do?’as a kid and still thinking what would HIS protagonist do when the scenarios started. Now how could kdj bear to kill his protagonist, the one that brought moments of joy to his life, the one he grew up with, hell his reason (reason for what? that’s up to readers’ but I see yjh as one of kdj’s reasons to live). I think kdj would rather swap places with yjh if it gave yjh even the teeniest moment of relief because well he’s kdj’s (they’re life and death companions your honour).
Another thing this song makes my brain twerk about is yjh. Yjh wanted to become the demon king so kimcom would have to kill him right? Now this sounds a bit eh because he can regress and all but remember yjh told kdj that he could take their companions to the end of the scenarios.
Yjh cares about his companions so much he’s willing to sacrifice himself to save them even if it means he won’t be with them ( shoutout my puppy boy 999) Yjh wanted to swap places with kdj because he believed kdj was the one that could help their companions survive, he’s the one that could protect their companions and make it to the last scenario with them without losing anyone (someone give my boy a hug and some tea please).
Also what if yjh was tired of seeing kdj sacrifice himself (rat keeps dying and damn) and wanted to protect him, to help him see he doesn’t need to keep sacrificing himself and what better way than to sacrifice yourself?? Yjh willing to swap places with kdj to protect him, to put a rest to his endless sacrifices, as a form of companionship (get you a companion that goes through mind breaking scenarios for you).
Honourable mention to Sp btw. I’ve not gotten here in the novel but I’ve seen the ‘why him not me’ line enough that I can’t ignore it. Sp who wonders why kdj chose yjh of the 3rd round instead of him, the yjh kdj grew up with (is he? I got this info from twitter so I’m not 100% sure and I’m not done reading).
I believe sp wants to be by kdj’s side (man’s got a book filled with all kdj’s comments my guy) and with that desire to be by the one that’s been with you from the very beginning (I’m referring to kdj being by the sole reader of twsa and basically experiencing the scenarios as a reader)
I like to imagine if sp had the chance, he’d swap places with yjh (GO FULL ON SCARLET WITCH BABES) I know I’d sure want to switch places cause damn this is the person that’s loved me and stood by me even when I was just a webnovel. This person looks up to me when in trouble and cherishes me to the point of sacrifice now why in hell wouldn’t I want to be by their side??
Anywho that’s enough for this song. Bear with me while I joongdoktify everything I see and hear :)
