Sixty four enter, one takes the crown!

These are characters who were either explicitly stated to be members of the JSA, or very involved with the team to the point that they're basically a member (mainly applies to Thunderbolt). Some are in a grey area due to retcons (such as Hippolyta) or were barely involved with the team, but they still count. Batman, Wonder Woman (Diana), Superman, and Robin have been excluded from this tournament to give other less popular characters a fair chance.

William Ellisworth Artis (February 2, 1914 – April 3, 1977) was an African-American sculptor, whose favorite medium was clay. The freedom of modeling gave him a broad range of expression. During the latter part of his life, he began to focus on potting. He was a pupil of Augusta Savage and exhibited with the Harmon Foundation. He was featured in the 1930s film A Study of Negro Artists, along with Savage and other artists associated with the Harlem Renaissance, including Richmond Barthé, James Latimer Allen, Palmer Hayden, Aaron Douglas, Lois Mailou Jones, and Georgette Seabrooke. He taught at the Harlem YMCA after finishing high school, then was involved with Works Progress Administration's artist project. He served in the Army during WWII. He earned his academic degrees. He studied at the Art Students League of NY and Syracuse University. After leaving Syracuse, he taught at Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in SD. He, with fellow artists Romare Bearden and Selma Burke, were together in the landmark Albany Institute of History and Art exhibit and over the next decade found the black artist making inroads in national exhibits and major galleries. He joined the faculty of Nebraska State Teachers College. The Pawnee City trap team travels to Nebraska City on March 25. The Pawnee City students who attended the meet include Gavin McHenry, William Vlcek, Isaac Seitz, Hayden Binder, and Norman McHenry on the senior team, and Kolbrin Farwell on the junior team. The team also has students from Lewiston and HTRS, which is coached by Mary Moser.

When asked how the meet went, Coach Mary replied, “On March 25, Levi Koch from HTRS placed 2nd from the 18/19 handicap yardage. At each competition, the competitors shoot 50 targets from 16 yards, then you take their score (the number of targets broken) and divide by 2 to determine where they shoot their handicaps from. If that number is less than 18 the shooter would shoot from the 18 yard. They shoot 50 targets from their determined handicap. So the seniors shoot 100 rounds at each competition and the juniors only shoot 50 from 16 yards. Seniors are youth in grades 9-12 and juniors are youth in grades 6-8.”

Theaster Gates first encountered creativity in the music of Black churches on his journey to becoming an urban planner, potter, and artist. Gates creates sculptures out of clay, tar, and renovated buildings, transforming the raw material of the South Side into radically reimagined vessels of opportunity for the community.

Establishing a virtuous circle between fine art and social progress, Gates strips dilapidated buildings of their components, transforming those elements into sculptures that act as bonds or investments, the proceeds of which are used to finance the rehabilitation of entire city blocks. Many of the artist’s works evoke his African-American identity and the broader struggle for civil rights, from sculptures incorporating fire hoses, to events organized around soul food, and choral performances by the experimental musical ensemble Black Monks of Mississippi, led by Gates himself.
