Hi! I really love your art! The lines are so bold but the colours so natural that it feels distinct but grounded?? I'm obsessed with the shapes in your work
I was wondering if you had any advice for drawing bodies? Whenever I try it either my proportions are off or an arm ends up looking like a calf or something.
First of all, thank you <3 That's so nice and I think "lines bold, colours natural" is some truly aspirational words to say about my art, I'll strive to be what you say I am <3 I do not, unfortunately, have any great tips on drawing bodies - it's a very wide topic and fundamentally just really bloody hard. I fail horribly 9 times out of 10. How to approach it I think varies a lot with like...HOW you are struggling, and who you are as a person. For proportions and anatomy there are definitely books to look at, and some rules of thumb that can help you - anything from "the shoulders are about 2.5-3 heads wide" through "feet are the same length as the forearm", "elbows are in line with the navel and the navel is two sternums down" etc etc. For me, realising just how big the ribcage actually is and learning how to use that as a unit of measure was a big event (the torso is about two ribcages long). Look at references, Draw over low opacity references and try to look for patterns that help YOU. Like... "Hm, do the shoulders line up with something useful?"
Tumblr media
Having a good ref model to double check things helps too. The pen is pointing to about the bottom of the ribcage. But there's also stuff like maybe you're getting too hung up on construction and then it might help more to try to draw from references by ONLY blocking in a silhouette first. This helps me sometimes still:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Or you could be like me, struggle with all of the above and then some - like how to make poses look natural and/or dynamic? Weight distribution is a whole other topic.. gah, it never ends, but it's fun to learn.
Lastly, this took me way too long to realise and I think it should be said: Do not fret too much about STUDYING. The unfair thing is that the better you are at something, the better you will be at actually learning from doing studies and exercises or reading books. We accept this with many other disciplines and sports but rarely art. Mileage is king, and mileage is best gained from having fun and enjoying what you do. If you find studies suffering and frustrating you're probably better off just drawing what you enjoy and fuck it if it isn't "pushing your boundaries" or whatever. Eventually you'll get to the point where studies start to give more than they take, and then you're home free. I'm not gonna recommend a billion resources you likely won't enjoy but here are some things I genuinely found helpful lately: * a physical anatomy model, they're pricy and not necessary but being able to just look at it every now and then, turn it over etc helps. * The "Morpho" series of books, they do not teach anatomy, but they are very useful quick reference books and much more easily digested than most anatomy material. Just try to find a real anatomy book to read once your appetite is up as well.
The zig-zag/Lightning bolt method for arms and legs, fuckin' thing revolutionised how I sketch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yCkmB030GpQ
Tumblr media
Gottfried Bammes "The Complete guide to Anatomy for Artists and Illustrators" This thing is insane, it's from the 50's and like 600 pages long. You could absolutely kill someone with it, but a lot of the pages are more philosophical or art history you can skip and despite its age and fear factor this dude writes in a witty, clever and just wonderful way that I've seen nowhere else. Fantastic photos. By far, FAR the best anatomy book I've ever seen. It's not a book I'd recommend for someone starting out, I would not have been able to digest it like four years ago, but once you get to a certain point it's amazing.
That's a lot, uhhh, feel free to ask me for more specific tips this was a bit of a rant. Hope some of it was useful!

I had an idea for a seemingly random project a while back, but I was too busy to even suggest it.
I'm not seeing a lot of Akudama Drive fangirls around lately... So maybe my timing is poor, but let's start with a poll.
*My idea is that each artist would draw one or a couple characters, so the photo being redrawn (I have a specific one in mind) would have a mish mash of artstyles.
This would be for fun and volunteer based. Like "pick your character, and we can create a picture that shows off the artstyles of a group of fans." All skill levels accepted.
Seven artists maximum, because there are seven characters. However, since this is a very small fandom, if there are less artists available, we could either choose to omit one or multiple characters, or to have one or multiple artists draw multiple characters. The drawings don't have to be polished, though we should agree beforehand on elements such as whether they will coloured and/or shaded.
This is the picture. I hope you see my idea at least... I should probably have thought this up at a time when more people were active... Though by the time the stage play came out, it was already rough. It would be fun to have a drawing of this picture with a different artist for each Akudama. If no one is interested in doing this, I will definitely sketch some of the Akudama using this ref for fun eventually!
(If you know an Akudama Drive fanartist who would be interested but is not on tumblr, don't hesitate to let them know about this idea and try to get me in touch with them!)

SARAH JACKALOPE I DESPERATELY NEED YOUR HELP WITH LEARNING HOW TO DRAW A TERZO EMERITUS PLEASE GET BACK TO ME
Hi! I’m so sorry this took a bit to answer!
FULL DISCLOSURE I am literally the worst person to ask because the way I do it always changes but I appreciate your trust in my inconstancy! I also have a hard time drawing him or the other papas for that matter without a reference. I can try to help the best way I can. here we go, I really hope this helps!
Tumblr media
So the number don represent the order but just what I'll explain. First always consider the shape of the face I know this is just the sketch but we always start somewhere.
(1) Take a look at the basic jaw structure my style always make it longer than it should be but in this case I'm taking in the fact that while I made this tutorial I was looking at a photo reference. (2) Then the ears. (3) The basic middle line mark. (4) Two lines are of course for the eyes and you must realize that our eye level matches the tip of the ears show in the picture for remember that. (5) What I personally do when I draw noses it just help with a realistic measurement of the brows and the nose size. if we’re looking at this through a stylized realism way, remember that the distance between the eyes is matched by the size of the nose. this is not the case for some people but look at refs of people’s noses and see that the size of the eyes is the same size of the nose.(6) The first initial circle is the base, but remember that that won’t be the size of a head. so expand it a little bit so there is extra room to get that hairline and detail when we get to that part (I ended up not paying attention and ngl Terzo ended up with a big ass head but shhhhh I warned you)....
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I went ahead and did some detail work but this is what we’ll be seeing when I draw them. from pictures you can see the age lines and it’s really just a matter if you want the detail or not, done people can do that with little detail and make it look good but my style is in constant crises all the time so this is how I do it. you can also why I have the base sketch on top of my “lineart”.
Tumblr media
So Terzo’s hair specifically is weird in my opinion. I normally have a part I go off from when I draw hair but his just has to be weird. Either way, when I draw his I go down from the middle and just make it both have that volume and fluff he normally has. (Agin in the end result I polished it up so his part is that square like formation seen in pictures).
Tumblr media
Okay now the fun part, the papal makeup! The deep pink lines are the base sketch I usually draw up so when I color and shade it can be adjusted if needed. It also helps me know that proportions are somewhat realistic but with a small hint of my style as well. Idk I'm still in a style crisis as we speak and it’s gotten a lot worse since I've joined this fandom.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When I think everything looks good I work with the black and color it. I normally like using our black when I work with lineart to give it that ink look. I called this blunt lineart (and shading cuz like I said my style is very inconsistent). Now if you’re working digitally I do this type of coloring on a layer on top of this sketch so when I low the opacity I can see if my placement is correct (again just of needed). if I think I got most of it correct that’s where I go I with my next step.
Tumblr media
Wow, it’s looking like Terzo now, look at our sweet boy with the rbf, Blessimo!
So in these next few steps I just add the white and added purple wrinkle likes that were cover by the blunt lineart. You can make those line grey or white depending on your style but I like adding his colors when I draw him digitally so that’s an option. Once I have everything done I just against as needed then move on.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lastly I finish up the lineart, work on some shadow work and add color, for sketched I don’t really do that but in this case I placed a color pallet I usually work with (it’s still gonna be inconsistent as I go) but this is usually what I do when I draw him. honestly to god my methods and process changes but I at least hope this was a helpful guide.

art summary for 2023! (template here)
jan | feb | mar | apr | may | (oops) jul | aug | sept | oct | nov | dec
i feel so happy with my art this year! i really leaned hard into high contrast lighting and really figured out more of what i had started figuring out partway through last year, process-wise. it's still unbelievable to me that backgrounds were something i avoided like the fucking PLAGUE until... idk, 2 years ago or so? and now when i draw something without some kind of background, no matter how simple, it just looks plain fucking weird to me.
this year i did a lot (a lot) of referencing off of photos of myself, and that's been MASSIVELY helpful for pose/angle as well as for clothing folds, just as a base to build on. between what i wear to work and my lolita fashion wardrobe, i can find (or fake) pretty much anything well enough to use as a ref in a photo. swords also. i also have a sword. that i keep in my bedroom specifically for ref photos. (i have had this sword since for about 15 years and it wasn't even for weaboo reasons.)
i also did a lot more "sketching" this year than i have in years past, which felt really good and i want to keep doing that; whatever flavor of perfectionism it is that i have demands me to go all or nothing when it comes to art, so finding a way around that has been really rewarding. and it's fun! it's a good way of exploring different stuff i want to explore (eg. blorbeauxes wrapped let me mess with diff colors for lighting)
art goals for next year:
keep working on anatomy; something has been slipping my grasp recently
more dynamic facial expressions
more poses where 2+ people are interacting
make something to be printed! stickers, postcards, anything (for personal purposes; i don't intend to vend/table anywhere lol, this is just something i've been wanting to do for a while now, so why not make 2024 the year for it)
and thanks to everyone who left a kind word in the tags this past year :')

does anyone else get that weird feeling when you can look at a bajillion different art styles and go "yeah that's neat! love it! so cool!" and then as soon as you do absolutely any of your own drawing, there's just a constant alarm going off in your head saying "THIS IS INCORRECT AND IF YOU DON'T FIX IT, IT WILL LOOK TERRIBLE AND ANATOMICALLY INACCURATE" despite it being nothing different from all those other art styles you see and love??? like "uncanny valley" but w/ all your own artwork and almost all the time
like I was just thinking about this, because there's lots of awesome artists I follow on Instagram & Tumblr that have interesting styles that don't necessarily follow real-life human proportions. It's often different variants of anime art but that's not always the case, and across pretty much all these different styles you have different things like how the contours of the face are (i.e. chin, cheeks), or the size/spacing of eyes, or the way the mouth is drawn
but it's just occurred to me that whenever I draw, there's pretty much always a constant nagging feeling, that I have to fix every anatomical or rendering mistake and if I don't then it just won't look "right", and that's one of the biggest things that stops me from completing 99% of my art
like earlier today I posted a 10-minute sketch, and it was obviously not "good anatomy"- it was pure vibes, just drawing what felt right in the moment and immediately posting it without trying to correct anything at all. and as soon as I did it, it hit me- that was probably the first time I've ever just created a piece of art for fun with virtually zero concern about "accuracy". Everything else I ever work on is always constantly drawn-out and changed and modified endlessly because it never feels "correct" and I don't feel like I can proceed with it.
today I've spent more than 3 hours just practicing how to draw heads, and it was the same thing. I was doing okay, but it took ages to get through even the simple parts like drawing straight from an anatomy ref. and it drives me insane not just because of perfectionism or whatever... but the fact that there's not a single "correct" human figure.
There's a ton of natural variation in how people appear, that's why we're all unique ffs! Different people have differently-shaped faces, their noses look different, their cheeks are different, their foreheads can be different, the wrinkles or freckles or eyebrows or eye shape or X Y Z are all varied and unique among different people.
Of course there are certain basic proportions and principles, you don't put someone's eyes on the back of their head, but I know all the basic proportions at this point and I've made a ridiculous amount of figure drawings both live and from photo, quite literally hundreds of drawings ranging from 1-3 minute gestures all the way to 1-, 2-, 3-hour-long works.
So why is it that no matter who or what I draw there's always that piercing & uncanny feeling? that i'm never able to capture a likeness of someone whether real or fictional, whether I'm trying to draw realistically or stylized?? it feels like I'm still getting something fundamentally wrong all the time even when I've studied all the basics and so much more, and even when my own professors look at what I do and say it's correct.
it's probably the autism, since there's a ton of other things in life where I appreciate predictability and uniformity and certainty. math problems have correct answers, essays can have certain types of analysis, machines can be described in terms of mechanical principles. But art isn't like that, and I've had similar issues w/ my art classes before, I just never quite thought of it from this specific perspective. I knew I struggled with open-endedness in projects, but this feels like something even deeper and more infuriating than that >.>
going back to that sketch, I can look at it and see obvious simple mistakes that I didn't bother to fix because I kept it strictly to 10 minutes. the chin is an obvious one, for instance, and the eyes could be better too. but I don't want to go back to that artwork, partially because it's just a 10-min sketch and it's not really anything that profound, but also partially because even though I know I can make it better I'm scared that as soon as I start messing with it I'll never be able to look at it comfortably ever again because it'll always feel incorrect. Not incorrect because I didn't care but incorrect despite me caring so much. which feels so much worse than just making a silly mistake when you're drawing normally.

He's a biter, you know.
details and un-shaded version (and also lineart version) under the cut:
I meant to draw this for peterfel week and made the sketch in like, literally February but didn't get around to finally finishing it until now… lol… well it's done now!!!
i dunno if i love how the dark shaded version turned out...
Tumblr media
These are my base colors, but I guess I just felt like spending a couple hours with color overlays and fucking around to make the final moody blue version lol
as an aside the bokeh is a brush by Bunabi/Eriart which you can find as a freebie on her patreon - i saw it and was like omg wait i could use that
...the buildings are also brushes (well the windows are)
anyway here's the lineart
Tumblr media
I also used a chain brush of course cause I ain't fuckin drawin all of that lmao —I used a brush from this set, they're pretty nice
Tumblr media
😻 there she is oh i also used a diamond stamp 😂 the lesson to learn about me is if i can use a brush for something that would otherwise be tedious and it looks decent i will because i am lazy. unless i only have like a Single instance then I'll usually just draw it but when I have more than one it's either brushes or copy pasting lol
Tumblr media
Felicia's outfit is a mix of sources, inspired by both her original costume, with the furry chest (in this case unzippable) as well as obviously more modern sexy latex outfits and so on... but i did NOT give her cleavage to her bellybutton cause I think that's dumb. though. to be fair in this case it would be more justifiable 😂
i love drawing her long long hair (angel medina's fault tbh) (sensational spider-man my beloved...)
Tumblr media
rawr 😼
he's trying very hard not to laugh 😂 but he's into it, he's having fun
the muzzle ended up being like multiple designs from photo refs mashed into one so idk... how realistic it is other than the nose-forehead piece which was the same on both my refs. admittedly it looks a little loose but 🤷 still looks nice 😏
Tumblr media
claws 😏
I also drew Peter in the classic suit, which I don't normally do, but I was doing more of the comic book look here instead of my own AUs and so on lol
Tumblr media
he broke the cuffs so he could touch her butt 🙄 god peter don't you know how much real leather BDSM gear costs (don't tell him)
this new pen tablet is a lot of fun, it's way more comfortable to draw on and the increased pressure sensitivity makes it a lot easier to draw my favorite thing to draw: peter's arm hair 😂😂
the only weird thing is if I press down medium or harder while I'm drawing it... creaks? which is very funny, my old pen did not do that. it really is weirdly like using a felt tip pen or a very fine point marker. except it's plastic.
Tumblr media
shoes. it may be classic style but I can never resist giving Peter sporty soles lol I know some people hate that but I just think it looks nice and I can handwave the sticking away as electrostatic forces or something. negative charge. electron transfer. blah blah blah. (in my AU i decided Peter has both electrostatic sticking that encompasses his whole body and ALSO adhesive secretions so if he gets his hands and feet bare i guess he has double the sticking power lol)
shaded versions just cause
Tumblr media
tits
i really like drawing latex lol
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
also if you're wondering why i didn't give peter a boner to match his red face well i have an out and it's that long ago i decided he wears a dance belt under the costume so as not to inflict the outline of his dick and balls on the people of NYC on a daily basis, and dance belts are first of all designed as mentioned to smooth out and hide that outline but also you wear them with everything pointing north and the waistband is like 5 inches wide so i don't think he has to worry about his little buddy escaping LOL (though I'm sure it's possible it would be more visible... i didn't bother trying to google it lol)
really i just didn't feel like trying to draw a boner 😂

I’ve been doing some reflecting on this past year, and I really truly think it is the most artistic improvement I have made in any span of time. Of course, I’m going to be completely insufferable about it and have collected my best piece from each month with a few personal notes, so why don’t we go on a sprint down memory highway together?
January
Tumblr media
At the start of the year, I was both adrift between fandoms and art styles. I was mostly aiming to find which style I could keep using, finish pieces quickly yet still feel proud of. It certainly worked in the moment, but as I pushed my boundaries more it didn't stick. Still, I look back on this style fondly! also proper throwback to my old username that i had for far too long
February
Tumblr media
This was the start of me working on colour palettes. I lay down my main colour in the background and fit the rest of my colours around that. It was a good way to start experimenting!
March
Tumblr media
Then the shift back to finding my style- I particularly like how the hair turned out in this piece! I also started trying more interesting poses here, and actually properly attempting hands.
April
Tumblr media
I didn't finish any pieces in april as I had started working more hours and didn't quite know how to balance myself creatively at that point. I did lean into this style of sketch much more, which was good fun while it stuck around but ive leant away from it in more recent times.
May
Tumblr media
Not much to say about may in particular, lots of the same things as the past few months with improvements here and there! just some steady progress :)
June
Tumblr media
Cue the crunch of getting character refs done before artfight, and then only actually finishing one (which isn't actually complete, even to this day). But hey, more solid reference for My Guy ! I also leaned into drawing furries a lot more and have improved heaps in the difference of proportions!
July
Tumblr media
artfight baybee!! no artistic differences, but it was a lot of fun scouting out other peoples character designs! I do hope to participate more this year :3
August
Tumblr media
back to colours, though this month felt like a bit of a backtrack. Don't get me wrong, I do quite like this piece, but contrast-wise it doesn't have as much visual clarity as I would like. Regardless, a good learning opportunity!
September
Tumblr media
Fun fact, I rendered this one entirely in greyscale! This was the start of me getting back into hatchetfield after being reminded of NPMDs release, and lets be real this part of black friday was chilling so I had to do something about it! I consider this piece a landmark in terms of my art journey.
October
Tumblr media
Once again no real finished pieces, I was too busy watching nightmare time while waiting for the group watch of npmd. I did do a lot of studies of star wars characters from their live-action shows though, which was a fun learning experience!
November
Tumblr media
This was the piece where I applied pretty much everything I had learnt throughout the year. contrast, colour themes, interactive environments and poses, the lot! and also. its them. how could i not
December
Tumblr media
A perfect piece to wrap up the year with! Another step up from november, this applied lots of what I had learnt and pushed my boundaries even more. I have been aiming for more realism to actor's faces and body types, not out of it-has-to-be-canon-sake, but rather learning how to accurately depict someone's likeness from a few photo references. good practice for both live-action and animated characters!
Overall last year was absolutely wild. I can't wait to share my journey with you all as we go into 2024 strong!

do you have any tips how to doodle? i want to have some drawings around my writing but i have a hard time making it look effortless. love your art btw!
thank you for the compliment anon! as flattered as i am to be asked for drawing advice, i absolutely don't feel i have enough knowledge or skill to give it. still, since you asked i'll do my best to give you an answer! ( ◡̀_◡́)ᕤ
just to be clear, i am a self-taught hobbyist ⁽ᶠᵒʳ ⁿᵒʷ⁾. this isn't going to be a definitive 'how to draw' post! do not take this advice at face value if you are trying to learn how to draw professionally, because well, that wasn't the question and that's not what this post is about. it's just your rando tumblr artist giving silly advice on how to draw silly doodles :3
so here are my tips and tricks on how to doodle:
1. firstly? relax. you're doodling for fun and for yourself! it doesn't have to be perfect (as cliché as this sounds). your works are important because you created them.
i find that a lot of the time i don't even start drawing because i don't think i can pull it off the way i imagined in my head. don't fall for this, it's your inner goblins trying to deceive you. you will never get to a point where it looks like you want it to if you don't try at all!
draw even if you think it looks like shit. don't be overly critical of yourself but also don't give up. it's okay to change something if you feel it looks weird or just cause. but also step away from a drawing from time to time, so you can see it with a clear mind - maybe you will catch some mistakes or maybe you'll realize that it looks better than you thought it did!
2. doodle all. the. time.
the more you do it the more natural it will feel. silly expressions, random objects, your ocs, anything.
you said you want to have drawings to go with your writing, so i suggest trying to draw whatever moment you wrote! i'm gonna use our life as an example, since that's the fandom i draw for at the moment. when i play the game and i like a line or a certain moment i quickly draw it on a sticky note. even if the doodles look bad i still feel good looking at them, because i drew a moment i enjoyed and i managed to show the emotions i wanted in the doodle.
3. use references. like a lot of them.
from my experience, i usually have an idea on what i want to draw - what pose or expression i have in mind. first i sketch it out on my own and then i look up references. sometimes for an entire doodle and sometimes for a specific part, like an arm placement.
if you don't have a clear idea of what you want to doodle, but you know the moment in your writing you want to draw, let's say two characters dancing, look up photos of people dancing and look at art that other people drew to seek inspiration.
references are really helpful but they can also feel constraining, as if they are limiting what you can draw. to that i say if don't use only one reference! the pose can come from one picture, an expression from another, body type a different one and so on. personally i have an entire board on pinterest dedicated to photos and drawing advice i find useful. when i can't find a specific thing i usually take pictures of myself and use that.
this is a really nice deviantart post about using references! you can also find it here on pinterest, where i found it.
4. simplify your refs!
when you have a reference it still may be hard to draw with it. i used to do the thing where you start drawing with a ref by focusing on one part and drawing it in an extremely detailed way and then moving on to another. needless to say it did not look good at all - the proportions were off and it looked stiff and unnatural.
what helps a lot is simplifying your references and your drawings in general. here's what i mean by that:
Tumblr media
imagine references not as a whole but as a bunch of shapes. you can draw over the reference directly to get a better feeling of what shapes make sense.
5. what i learned from my book about drawing is that your hand movements shouldn't come from the wrist, but rather from the arm. most of the time using only wrists is good for details. it may feel a bit awkward and clunky to implement the entire arm into drawing at first, but it helps a lot with how your lines look!
6. and last but not least, we are talking about doodles! not detailed, complicated art pieces.
it's okay if they are messy or imperfect in any way.
so tldr; doodle because you like to, draw a lot and everything, use references and simplify them, use the entire arm while drawing, and don't worry about them not looking like a museum art piece!
i think in the end what is most important is that you draw because you like to. progress will come with time.
sooo there you have it! i took some time with replying to this ask because i wanted the advice to be good,, i hope it helped you in some way anon! ৻( •̀ ᗜ •́ ৻)

Optimus with an artist human s/o
Tumblr media
I must do the drawing is your always mood
But with art block half the time your chucking your shit out the window
He was there to actually pick up Jack, because Arcee was out on a mission with bulkhead you skipped class so you sat there sketching him, bee, and wheeljack
Couldn't get the grill right so you oh so casually went up and rubbed your hand against it
"Oh...so in....that looks right..."
Taking pictures for reference
"Can I help you-" "oh shit-"
It was just jack
"Sorry was taking refrence photos. Is this your truck?" "Uh...yeah..." "Can I get and interior shot?" "Maybe another day?"
Ayo Optimus not noisy but he kinda wanted to see them drawings
Turns out Arcee was out longer than expected and the next day you were there again and so was he because Jack was so nice and let you take some refrence photos of the outside you slipped a drawing through the open window with a thank you note and went about you way.
Hah. Not Knockout and breakdown thinking your an ally to the autobots and basically snatching you like they snatchin someones weave
"Ayo can I draw you-" "Bitch im litterally kidnapping you" "....okay so can I take some ref picks atleast? Please?" "...well shit you said please"
Not you having fun being kidnapped
"Damn I look good. Whats your name human?" "Y/n" "and why is such a fabulous artist with the autobots?" "The who?"
Oh. You- oh...oh shit.....
Not knockout dropping you off at your house and grtting your # ya'll buddies now
You despite being kidnapped for two days just show up again randomly and walk up to Jack.
"Yeah can I see the inside your truck no pictures no anything, just. Real quick?" "Sure?"
Oh shit your sitting in a transformer.
"Okay I know about your talking alien car that transformers into a huge robot"
Bam friends now now you go to the base everyday
Ratchet wasnt very Happy till he realized you were just extremely quiet. And YES he could work in peace
Often you sketch the autobots forms.
"Wow! Thats real detailed!" "Holy shit miko-"
You often let her go through your sketch book.
"This is a lot of-" "Shhhhh"
It was alot of Optimus: you dont know why to be honest it was like he your comfort person to draw
You've probably had every expression of his in your books, sketches of...well everything.
Mhmm those hip sketches somethin else dude
"I made my first art based Tarot card deck!"
Smokescreen realizes there based off them and is obsessed with his tarot card desgin (the sun card because come on its Smokescreen)
Optimus even compliments you on them and ask you about them you happily explain them to him
You tell him you based him in the Justice card and told him it was pretty explaintory
He told you he was honored that you seen him such a light, and there you go getting all flustered and complimenting him back
Arcee wants to know why shes the hanged man but your too busy being flustered
Now often he'll wander up behind you looking over your shoulder why you sketch away.
"What are you drawing today y/n-" "Ah! nothing! Nothing at all! Hah! Ha...."
Not more optimus hip images: they're just too fine not to draw
Despite being well Optimus he's very innocent and would simply see them as anatomy drawings
But they aint....you know that
For that reason: you refused to draw Optimus (or his hips) anymore and now your crying inside but tiding to have will power
HOT ANIME GUY POWER; drawing hot anime guys to leed your mind occupied but you just make Human Prime and your crying and screaming without the s.
Miko, knows because you forgot your bag at her house one time
"Damn man you got it bad." "I know..."
Luckily ratchet sees Vaule in your skills and ask you to draw out invention plans you say yes immediately
With Ratchet asking for help your around the base more often, sketching out plans for him
Which means you and Optimus talk alot more
He finds your conversations relaxing
You often fall asleep at the small table, after finishing plans and starting on your own work, usually homework
So that means he sees your litrle fifth grade crush drawings, you know with lopsided hearts and all luckily you know better to draw Human like alien robots in your notebook so he only sees the O + F/i surronded in hearts
He doesnt know why but now he's gotta talk to you more: its a now or never situation.
"Y/n-" "It wasnt me!-" "would you like to go home to rest?" "Um. Yeah that sounds great"
Optimus now drives you home everyday, and picks you up from school instead of you just riding with Bee and Raff
Litterally a dream come true on your part and on his part
Is it akward silence? Or do you both just think its awkward silence making it more awkward
Asking Ratchet to describe how the iacon archives use to look and sketching it out and giving it to Optimus
"Im not sure I got the file cases right. I had Ratchet describe the your world to me as best I could.
It was perfect to him, and he thanked you for it, it never leaves his glove box
Usually because your an artist your dressed in clothes that have paint stains, perhaps the back of your shirt is hand painted or your old converse.
Yet you had a presentantion you had to get dressed up for, for school, in a knitted pencil like skirt and a knitted sweater with some boots
He couldnt pick you up or drive you to school that day so Wheeljack went with you instead and Smokescreen picked you up
Not wheeljack bragging trying to get Optimus to confess that you look rather hot that day.
Turns out when Optimus returned to base he'd be blown away by your change in outfit.
"How'd it go!"
"All the energon secured. There was no doubt after all!" Wheeljack laughed, "Right Optimus."
You looked at him with such a big smile and eyes he only nodded with a smile
Wheeljack drove you home: saying the boss was tired and just like he had hoped you left your bag in his back seat
Now Miko and Wheeljack both have the power to tease you
Not Optimus seeing where you work and creating a holo form to go and see you
"Hm? Y/n?" The employee asked, "Yeah shes in right now there doing a study. Come on I'll take you there."
When he said study he thought idk maybe like with a book. Not figure studies, you know the ones where your naked
So he was not expecting to walk in with people surrounding you as you sat laid on a couch with a thin sheet covering your lower hips down, top bare and a hand propping your head up.
Poor baby had to stand there for twenty mintues attempting not to stare at you
But time was called and you got up going to dress again.
"Ayo n/n." "Hm?" "This guys here for you."
You only smiled hoping it was an art scout as you apologized for your current state and fixed yourself.
"Hello Im Y/n!" "I...I know..."
Voice sounded oddly familiar
"Do...I know you from....Wait a mintue!"
Pretty easy to figure it out, "stay there!"
He only listened as you rushed to your bag, flipping through the pages of one of your sketch books and lifted it up besides him.
"Its...Op-"
"I believe Orion- would be a better choice sounds more human."
Your weezing; hes evern prettier as a human
"I had no idea...you could..." "its older technology but works well." "Ah... I see..."
Thank god for being 18...primus hes just so pretty
"Um...I have to go pick up my work bag...do you wanna come along?"
Not you guys having a moment in the locker room where you told each other your feelings.
Making out in the locker room super softly? Absolutely.
Making out in his Alt form? Even a bigger yes, especially if hes dropping you off at your house
But its best to keep it a secret
Miko and Wheeljack notices that the teasing doesnt get to Y/n anymore and Miko realizes you stopped drawing Optimus and some human guy now. What a bummer
They realize Optimus does seem to have a much brighter glow to him, and he always lightly smells like something fimilar.
*cough* your perfume *cough*
"Is Y/n okay?" "What would be the problem?" "Shes always in a daze these days."
It true, drawings and plans you offered to help ratchet draw out are completed but sometimes you dont even remember drawing them or the process.
"Hmm? Yeah....I don't really care....whatever you want Miko." "Um Im jack and Im asking for the science text book back." "What!? Oh- sorry!"
"Ah Miko! Isnt the world so bright today!" "Its raining outside Y/n-" "Lets go run in it!" "What-"
You've never been so happy, even around finals your kicking your feet like a schook girl
It causes everyone great fear,
Not Optimus sneaking out of base to help you sneak out of your house so you guys can go have fun in some forest.
Refused to go into your room, its your private space but you convinced him anyways and well...its chaotic organization.
You show him around, pointing out things to him that your super proud of.
Ends in you guys on your bed trying to be quiet as you laugh with each other.
Falling asleep in his arms for the first time is wonderful
Not he leaving a jacket behind for you to wear and you do just around the house it did have the autobot insignia on it after all.
Sleeping prime refrence photos if you wake up before he has to leave
Can dance surprisingly well, and he'll go dancing with you in abanded parking buildings
You couldnt find a more perfect boyfriend
Finds a way to go to every art gallery your in.
You often do peices based on the bots and there stories, like a verbal reference
Some of your paintings worry him: you always reassure him you cant always have a happy peice but your happy to have him
Old people think your both just the sweetest couple
Until your parents pull up and your not a couple anymore, you try and keep it a secret from everyone and ya'll manage
Your parents like him upon introductions that you are both friends
Your dad's actaully a greek philosopher, and gets along very well with Optimus, he did introduce himself as Orion after all.
Life is good for the both of you

Do you have any art tips on drawing fat and ,👉👈 pectorals
im finally feeling sentient enough to sit down and answer this but idk i mostly just have some basic tips.
look at lots of reference photos! you can search terms like body positive, plus size models, etc and look at fat bodies and study how they curve and sag. what i like to do when drawing fat is look at my own body and see what is soft and what sags n stuff. so places to keep in mind that are fat are chest, stomach, arms, thighs, hips, neck, that sort of thing.
Tumblr media
now the pectorals..... mens tits. if youre drawing like Meaty tits, they are more like. square and full at the top. if theyre fleshy, depending on whats supporting them, theyll sag. tiny boobs gather fat at the nips, so they're flat at the top and kinda pop out at the bottom
Tumblr media
i just did these little sketches for examples, i didnt really look at any refs, but i do advise you to! it also depends on how you draw and if you lean more on the realistic vs stylized, but it is important to understand what it looks and acts like before simplifying it.
its ok to learn how to draw fat, in fact, its something i think all artists need to understand, even if they dont draw it often. its just fun to draw curvy people

I was so inspired by this one picture of a Cat in the late 30′s - whose owner had lovingly written “Our [cat name]” in pen on the photo itself, that I just had to draw a version for a beloved Engine 💙🥺😊
I’m partially copying the expression the cat had, Thomas himself may be midblink or simply not expecting a camera when he looked ahead. I imagine he’d complain about the face he was pulling when he later gets to see the photograph, and yet someone’s kept it, written the captions and put it in a frame...! 😸💖🚂
Flat, colour ver and inspirational Cat below the cut! in original post please click the link!! lol 🐱

Redward day!! Redward day with a bit of Fanart for Jobey’s lov-er-ly scene of the two lads~! 💞🚂😸
I had no idea what I wanted to draw for this day, but really didn’t wanna miss it... so while I’m glad I went with the idea, I do wanna revisit this in the future with features like ....rails! and shading and better perspective =w=; Two Engines at an unconventional angle is very tricky ^^;;
This version of their first meeting is yet to be topped and it will always live rent free in my head as the default canon 🥰✨💕

Short Stumpy Boy....
My own spin on the world’s most famous Tank Engine! I’ve seen and enjoyed many, many other takes, and lots of those have really cute ideas. Seems to be a fairly even split between his wearing Work Clothes or Formal Attire, so with my take I tried to do something different, maybe a bit more modern and a lot more casual, but hopefully Trendy! ✨
I absolutely wanna do more down the line... I actually had the coloured sketch done as more a concept than Final Product, but I’ve no idea when I’ll be able to draw a neater version so here he is! Featuring a tiny selection of iconic lines and moments ;3c

So, ya’ll know about the Isle of Man having a unique native Cat Breed, the Manx? I’m here to propose there’s a similar situation on Sodor, which I call the Small-Eared Sudrian (Suddies or Small-ees as an affectionate nickname)
A breed of Domestic Cat, Suddies are defined by the physical characteristics of small (but still upright and triangular!) ears and long, fluffy tails. Contrasted with the tailless Manx cat, these look much more like a ‘normal’ moggy, but the Suddies have a unique temperament that causes them to be highly tolerant, if not clearly preferring, the hustle and bustle and the steam and smoke of Sodor’s famous Locomotives.
It’s theorised they were brought in to Engine Sheds to keep mice populations in check, though the claims are disputed by those who swear up and down that the cats just appeared one day, drawn instead to the warmth of the Iron Horses.
The Sudrian cat breed favours noisy environments and high temperatures, hence they are more of a pest in the sheds than the actual mice! Indeed, the difficulty in removing a cat from a prime position draped across footplates and shooing them from a Tank Engine’s bunker has been cited as reason for minor delays.
Very hardy and unlikely to be spooked with wheeshing steam or piercing whistles, some Cat Fanciers have despaired at how their Pedigree Queen insists on getting covered in coal dust. It is advised owners comb the cat to help prevent them swallowing soot that settles in their fluffy tails. More recently, health concerns have lead to attempts to keep the cats more distant from the Engines, but the Cats consistently have other ideas.
The cats are generally placid and can often be heard purring. It appears most of the Engines themselves are interested in the Suddies and get moody if the cats are chased away by human workers. A tender engine who refused to be named was most displeased when a cat was wrenched off from curled around his lamp iron and there was a personnel change shortly afterwards. Engines at rest sometimes compete with each other to coax a cat to sit on them to see who can charm more. The record is rumoured to be anywhere from 7 to 13 (in which a mother cat brought her kittens inside a cab), though this is highly disputed among the NWR fleet.
Suddies do have the sense to stay off the tracks and only build up numbers in sheds and smaller stations. The closest any have brought to an incident was the aforementioned upset engine, and another event where a bunker stowaway was only spotted in between stations on the Ffarquhar line, so the cat was kept in the Guard’s Van for the rest of the journey. The Guard in question took the cat with him upon retirement.

16 and 17
16. What's the most daunting part of your process? Ex, planning, sketching, lineart, rendering etc
i. hate. lineart. SO. MUCH. Typically I just take my sketch layer and work on cleaning it up until it’s neat enough!! Because i do NOT have the patience to make a whole other layer when my sketch is already detailed. I only bite the bullet and force myself to do it for official zine stuff, like the miho I did!! It was like pulling teeth idk how y’all do it. Coloring is SO much more fun👯‍♀️✨✨✨✨

17) What inspires you?
Gosh,,, a lot of stuff!! I take ref photos from real life a lot, I love reading through art books for shows and movies, watching animated stuff, other people’s works, everything really!! Last night for example, I was doing a deep dive into horror movies and WHOO WEE are there some SICK ASS stills and color palettes to look at!!
(some spooky examples under the cut!!)

of mice and artblock
So, midterms happened and I abandoned this blog for a while. But now I’m back, and I come bearing mice.
*
I’ve been really struggling with finding subjects I like to draw. I’m happy to work on skeleton studies until Judgment Day to better understand anatomy, but I know I need to balance “homework” art with “for fun” art, or else risk losing motivation for learning to draw -- and I’m so used to writing fiction at this point that no subject really appeals to me artistically unless it’s got 5,000+ words of story attached (or at least some narrative/character ideas, yanno -- something for my brain to pick at). The obvious solution is to draw concept art and characters from my written stories, but I feel really intimidated by that because I’m such a beginner artist that nothing I create now will do justice to the vision I have in my head.
I need art OCs and concepts – things that I will only draw art of, and have never written a story about. Stuff that doesn’t have to match a previously established, written story, and that I can change as I learn more and my skills improve.
I ended up drawing a bunch of mice.
This was initially just a whim. Human anatomy requires a lot of skill to pull off, especially faces and hands, but mice felt more beginner-friendly to me. Admittedly, I was going for a more cartoony style as opposed to photorealism, so if you’re looking at this from a realism perspective then these are pretty poor mice. However, I don’t feel ashamed of them, which I am taking as a good sign.
Tumblr media
I kept drawing one mouse over and over. I ended up calling him Leo just because it was funny – “leo” refers to lions, but here Leo is just a little mouse. But of course, giving him a name (and a gender, incidentally) is the start of a story. Via a flight of fancy, I got it into my head that I wanted to do a painting of Leo trying to catch a big snowflake. I made some thumbnails of what I wanted the scene to look like, and then cut out a roughly 7 inch x 7 inch piece of watercolor paper from a big sheet that I had under my bed, sketched the scene in pencil, and then finished with watercolor pencils (and a white gel pen for the snowflakes). The process probably took 2.5 to 3 hours.
Tumblr media
So, now the lore is that Leo is a mouse living in a little house in an old tree at the edge of the woods, and he wears a red scarf. I did not like this painting. It seemed over-saturated and the colors didn’t quite work the way I wanted them to. I ended up watching a tutorial on color theory, and decided to redo the painting using my newfound knowledge of color schemes. I used this color palette tool to get an idea of what kinds of colors would look good together, and settled on a complementary scheme with bluish green and brownish red.
And then, everything went wrong.
I tried to redo the painting, still working traditionally. I rushed the sketch because I was so eager to get right into working with color. This time, to avoid over-saturation, I used watercolors out of a pan rather than in pencil form. Mixing the colors in the lid of the pan took a really long time because I was so picky about shades, and because I continued rushing I didn’t allow the layers enough time to dry. Leo’s scarf (now green instead of red) bled into his russet fur, and the mailbox was the wrong shape, and I tried to erase a pencil line and created a dark blotch over an area that was supposed to be white with snow – and then I gave up.
Tumblr media
I had downloaded Krita, a piece of digital drawing/painting software, a while ago, but hadn’t had any success using it because my desk isn’t big enough to accommodate both a laptop and my small tablet. Using my lap to hold the tablet was an exercise in frustration, and I knew so little about how digital art works that I just felt really overwhelmed and lost whenever I opened the program.
However, Krita (like most digital art software) has an undo button that I find very alluring, so I decided to try it again, now on a shiny new desk from Ikea that is actually big enough to support tablet and laptop together. I think just the space on the desk really made all the difference, but also I was determined to get this artwork of a mouse to a place where I felt satisfied with it.
I spent a solid 5 hours working on what ended up being a very simple colored drawing of a mouse catching a snowflake outside his little house. I barely blended anything at all, and there’s no light source that required me to shade anything – it’s just flat color. However, I really like these colors, and I think I did well (for an absolute beginner). I want to go back and add textures/shading to give an impression of depth, but I'm not sure how.
Tumblr media
Leo – like all of my figures – feels really stiff, so I also want to work on gestures/studies of mice doing things. And, thanks to the popularity of mice as lab animals and pets, there are way more reference photos of mice than I expected! Most refs depict the house mouse, Mus musculus, but I did find the work of a wildlife photographer named Dean Mason who spent 15 years photographing harvest mice (micromys minutus).
Unfortunately, all of the prior artwork in this post I had drawn almost purely from imagination, and I think it shows. I studied two mice from photos in pencil, then erased the lines until they were barely visible and tried to do the fur texture in ink (with a dip pen, so there is some unevenness when the pen was extra inky).
Tumblr media
Left is my first attempt doing the fur texture. I was more cautious with layering pen strokes, so you can see the lines of strokes fairly evenly. Right is my 2nd attempt, where I was bolder with the pen. I like these mice more than the one I created in the digital painting; these ones (especially the right) feel more Beatrix Potter-ish, which is a vibe I like.
Do I want to go back and fix the anatomy in my digital art of Leo? Yes. I also want to take another stab at doing this piece traditionally, but this time, I'd go monochrome and try to do everything in brown. However, part of me is exhausted from drawing ten million snowflakes and does not want to relive that experience with a gel pen -- I've already done it once with a tablet pen, and that was enough.
I have a hazy, far-off goal of creating a comic of Leo having adventures with another mousy friend, but that’s so far in the future that it’s not worth spending time considering right now. In the nearer future, however, Leo’s friend might become a reality – I know he’s an albino mouse (name TBD) who either escaped from a drug-testing facility (I loved The Secret of NIMH movie as a kid) or else is a pet who was dumped into the wild by a human owner who no longer wanted him. Leo is outgoing and adventurous, and this friend is shy and cautious.

Sooooo this is a art related question. How do you draw a super tall character proportionally correct? I'm talking like 8 or so feet tall.
anon this implies that I have ever drawn anything proportionally correct in my life
but here’s what I do: gather a ton of photo references, any relevant works from favorite artists that look even vaguely like what I’m going for, and use a height calculator to get a sense of my character’s physical presence. IMO if they’re not human you have a lot more leeway with proportions, but it’s still good to have a grounding in reality.
Tumblr media
as an exercise, I sometimes start with a realistically-proportioned figure, then copypaste the sketch and elongate the limbs/torso/neck/etc. to my liking. then I just play connect-the-lines and modify individual parts as needed (obviously my monster characters don’t have human proportions so this example isn’t perfect, but you get the gist):
Tumblr media
for humans, I would focus on keeping relative proportions the same even as you elongate the figure (like at which point the arms end on the legs, for example – even on a taller human, they usually hit just below the pelvis).
this practice is more work than drawing the character from scratch, but it can help familiarize you with longer proportions.
when I was first getting a feel for drawing Gaster, I looked up photos of Robert Wadlow, the tallest man in recorded history (almost 9’):
Tumblr media
images of him like this, standing next to people of average height, gave me a good reference for the proportions a human(oid) of that size would naturally have. photo references for anatomy are really invaluable. that said, style also plays a big role in how proportions will look, and it’s okay to do your own thing. don’t be afraid to experiment and just have fun y’know?
one last thing that seems obvious and yet I fail at it constantly is making a ref sheet for your character. it saves a lot of trouble in the long run and your art will be more consistent for it.
hope this helps!
