Found

“Welcome home, Lady Uesugi.”

Shiba’s gravelly voice scraped against Haruka’s ears as she rose from her knees. Even now that aethersickness didn’t bother her nearly so much with the ryuujin’s presence and the tie to Bilei, the trip from the Mist to Othard was not short. A distance that before would have left the samurai nearly unconscious now only made her lightheaded, but she still needed time to rest. To hear her magistrate’s harsh tones when she first arrived and still bent over was less than welcome.

Not the least because Shiba Tanemune only met her at the aetheryte when there was something serious at hand.

Haruka raised a hand, finger up. “One moment, Shiba,” she breathed. The half-Doman was nearly panting for the exertion of teleporting so far. “Just one moment.”

Shiba sighed and turned, giving his Lady some peace.

It was a rest that didn’t extend to her retainer, however. She felt a hand on her back, rubbing slightly. “It is quite far to travel,” Sute said with humor in your voice. “But still, at least you aren’t this way with every little technique you use.” It was a jibe, but not a cruel one. Sute, the former mercenary who Haruka and Reenah had brought into their clan as a means of redemption for the young woman, had begun to regain some of her old humor of late. Her recovery after her fall into Kugane’s harbor that had shattered the Doman woman’s body was proceeding apace, and with sword in hand she’d begun training once again with Shiba and Haruka’s distant cousin, Megumi. With things returning to a sort of normal and purpose restored, Sute felt more free to be herself. Haruka and Reenah encouraged this return, and even if Haruka and Sute never returned to the nearly flirtatious friendship they had before, it was good to see the woman she’d met aboard the 88th’s airship return to something akin to her old self.

“There was once a time I did,” Haruka said, playing along. “But then I turned five.”

Sute chuckled. She’d heard Haruka’s history of learning her arts and understood quite well exactly when she’d first picked up the blades. Continuing to rub her back, she went quiet, smiling a little.

After a few more moments, the raven-haired hyur straightened and took in a deep breath. “Now, what brought you out here, Shiba?”

Shiba sighed and faced her full on now. The kimono and hakama he wore were his formal set, but there was mud smeared on the pleats over his thighs. The scabbard of the warrior’s blade was brushed with dirt, something he would normally have taken care of. “We might have a situation,” he said, taking a slightly informal approach to his wording. His arm rose, and he offered her a dagger. It was dirty but otherwise in good repair, clearly used and sharpened multiple times if the slight nicks on the flat were any indication.

Haruka shook her head in confusion as she took the blade. “It is a dagger. Many carry daggers. Should I be…”

Voice dying, she tested the weight, hefting the blade in her hand. With a flip of the wrist, she set it atop one of her fingers, hilt parallel to her finger, and released it. It was nearly perfectly balanced from tip to pommel.

Shiba waited. He saw the recognition in his lady’s demeanor.

“You came from the bamboo forests, then.” It was a guess, but one that accounted for the mud without Shiba’s clothes being messy. Flipping her hand, Haruka took the dagger by the blade.

“Further,” the magistrate replied. “It was raining near the old castellum.”

Haruka’s eyes flicked from Shiba to Sute. The retainer nodded. “I went with, thinking it best he not be alone out there. There are still some bandits, after all, even if your bastard of an uncle isn’t backing them any longer. We went over the, um…” she gave Shiba a confused look.

“Grey Hare Bridge.”

“Yeah, that. We went over that and up to the broken lands when we were caught in a storm. We managed to catch shelter with one of the scouts out that way, and he explained what he found.”

Stepping in close, Shiba lowered his voice. “He managed to get close to the castellum. He heard voices inside, but he never ended up going inside, instead choosing to contact us. After the storm we took a look, and we found no one. But we did find that.”

Haruka looked back down at knife in her hand. It was single-bladed but straight, the edge arcing near the tip to form a point on one side. The grip was solid light wood but unremarkable, hilt metal and strong. Well made, but there was no maker’s mark visible. She suspected there would be none, even on the tang. “No rust, so it’s not from an old resistance raid or camp. It still has an edge, recently ground on a whetstone.”

“And there’s no enchantment on it,” Sute said. “We had some of the smiths look at it, and they found nothing.”

Haruka paused, pondering. “No sign of miners or other workers? Maybe drifters?” Sute shook her head. She sighed and shook her head. “Alright. Send out the scouts in pairs. We cannot risk that whoever this is might not be preparing something nefarious. I will contact Reenah; perhaps she can begin training more. Shiba, send…” she paused then shook her head. “No, I will give orders to the patrols myself. Best I do it with Megumi present.”

Shiba raised a brow. “You’re trusting her a lot, recently.”

“I am. She proved herself loyal, and she needs the practice.”

Sute looked between them. “I can go on a couple patrols. Uesugi Megumi can take one in a direction, I can take another.”

Shiba looked skeptical, but Haruka nodded before he could say anything. “That is a good plan. No one is alone, but trusted commanders will be guiding our troops.”

“And I keep the watch rotating in Takko,” Shiba said.

“Good,” Haruka said with a hint of finality. “Let me get dressed appropriately and contact Reenah on the pearl. You two gather the troops who are awake. Let the ones who are asleep rest and have them take guard shifts in town. We meet in one bell at the training grounds.”

They parted, and Haruka made her way to the apartments. With the House of Summer still being constructed – and likely ending up much smaller than previously anticipated to save on resources – they had what some would consider meager quarters that they shared with their daughter when she was around. However, it gave them adequate space to be themselves, with the wall having been mostly soundproofed and with space enough to sit, eat, and sleep. It was utilitarian in a way Haruka liked. She would likely miss it when they were in the rebuilt lord’s home, a place that would be more appropriate to her rank.

But as she walked, the Lady of the Southern River Valley thought little of the progress they had made with Takko and Xiatien. Instead, her thoughts went to the dagger still in her hand. A plain dagger, unornamented, could easily belong to any hunter. But with an edge so sharp and with little damage, it clearly had only seen a little use. It was not a stretch for the weapon to belong to some shinobi in their territory with ill intent. Perhaps it was the Iga returned for vengeance, despite their deal. Or maybe the Saito clan had infiltrated her territory. Or it could be any number of other enemies. Truly, it was better to be prepared, to take care and investigate than not. And not just with troops, but with other resources.

Haruka, in her role as lord of the region, never forgot where she came from, those old lessons her father taught her: prepare for the worst, strike when and where it is unexpected, and keep your best resources away from the prying eyes of any others.

I like that Muu is associated with many animals in Minigrams!

Squirrels!

"Japanese culture views squirrels as symbols of playfulness and joy. They are admired for their agility, resourcefulness, and humorous behavior."

Playfulness and joy/humorous behavior -> Muu's current attitude in Milgram, one without worries; she tries to make a more light hearted atmosphere in prison, by making jokes voluntary or because of her bluntness!

Muu trying to joke about Fuuta's current injuries. (Honestly, I think Muu here really tries to make Fuuta more happy? By distracting him from the problem, Haruka isolating himself)

Here, she really tries to make Haruka feel better!

Resourcefulness -> "the ability to find quick and clever ways to overcome difficulties."

Muu escaping from the situation she was in, by eliminating the source of her problems, Rei. She tried to find other ways to stop the bullying, but her cries for help were not noticed or easily ignored.

Shiba Inu!

"To this day, the dog’s intelligence, spirit, and loveliness still allow it to embody two key values: perseverance and obedience. Japanese people view these qualities personified by the Shiba Inu with the utmost respect and admiration."

Perseverance -> Muu tried many times to escape from the situation. Begging for forgiveness, trying to defend herself, her head and face with her arms. It's not only until the hourglass is almost suffocating Muu, that she feels like giving up and letting herself drowning in the fake sweetness of her friendship (honey), once addicting, now just painful. And still, even in this moment of weakness, she manages to break free with a big price: taking Rei's life.

Obedience -> Muu, despite viewing herself as the queen bee, she is the type of person to go with the flow, to fit in the standards. She can't function properly without friends, people whom she can trust and spend time with! In Milgram, she finds Haruka interesting, because of their similar ages, but also because she was needing a person she can talk and feel comfortable with.

Donbrothers doggy daycare AU

Hi I work at a doggy daycare and I got really bored the other day so. Here’s my very silly AU where all of them work at Donbura Doggy Daycare :)

The daycare is owned by Kaito but no one knows anything abt him (just like canon lmao)

He owns a black and white border collie named “Kaiser”

Haruka has been working at the daycare the longest (after Tarou who’s been there abt as long as Kaito has been running it)

Is always tired of Kaitos mysterious bullshit

Has a pitbull mix rescue dog named “Oni” who is like a little too insane but still comes to daycare because everyone loves him

Kijino is the oldest staff member (though they’re not sure how old Kaito is)

He’s always getting injured somehow

Will not shut up abt his wife who is a veterinarian

He has a very poorly trained and ill-behaved Shih Tzu named “Birdie” that he’s very protective over because his wife adopted her for him as a bday present

He also has his wife’s dog, a highly trained German shorthair hunting dog named “Crane”

Inuzaka always forgets to wash his scrubs and ends up wearing band tees most of the time instead of his uniform

Pretty much everyone knows he’s a criminal but they don’t care bc he’s rlly chill

He lives in a van with his gf (by choice bc he’s a van life weirdo)

He doesn’t talk all that much and tries to act edgy but he’s actually always listening to showtunes w his AirPods on

He has a Shiba Inu creatively named “inu” as well as his gfs dog, a white Pomeranian named “Lovely”

Saruhara is always wearing bucket hats :)

He gets yelled at a lot for talking instead of paying attention to do the dogs

He struggles to discipline the dogs and talks to them like they’re people lmao

He has a black Newfoundland named “gorilla” who is absolutely ginormous but thinks he’s a lapdog

No one is sure how bc they all get paid the same shitty wage but he’s consistently broke

He gives the rest of them life advice frequently :)

Jiro always wears colorful scrubs with a bunch of patterns on them and he cuts the sleeves off of them despite managements protests

Ripped as hell just like canon

He annoys his coworkers bc he’s a little TOO cheerful all the time at a job that is incredibly exhausting

He’s very passionate abt teamwork and team building

Has DID like in canon, host jiro likes to wear a hoodie and is usually postivelt triggered when he gets to interact with cats that may be boarding

He has two dogs named “tiger” and “dragon” who are both German shepherds

There will be more bc obviously I haven’t drawn mr wahaha himself, let alone the dogs or the nouto, but :) enjoy!

Season 2 Ramble#10 - The Wind Down

This month my focus was on the slice of life genre, specifically the subgenre called iyashikei, which from Japanese to English roughly translates to healing

Been wanting to do an episode like this for a while now, firstly cause I've read a few before and they fr changed my life, really broadened my horizons on what manga as a storytelling medium has to offer,,, and that runs into the second reason I wanted to do this which is that often times I feel that the animanga community focuses too much on trying to read “heat”.... and even when a slice of life series does get in the limelight it's usually filled with drama of some sort.… so I wanted to bring the focus to/share my findings on the more exceptionally mundane things so to speak, finding peace, joy and contentment in normal day to day life

how this episode goes is:

usually I try to be very detailed with manga info like author, artist, chapter count, etc. but in the spirit of winding down I'm gonna keep it really simple, first up are 5 older reads ranked then after that reads from this month unranked but grouped by similarity. I also free balled the descriptions in the audio and here I'm gonna give very short and probably inaccurate summaries (my bad, it's the wind down ¯⁠\⁠_⁠(⁠ツ⁠)⁠_⁠/⁠¯)

Lastly, the intended focus was on iyashikei or healing manga but not that many manga reading sites actually have the subgenre listed, it's all categorized as slice of life so some things in this list aren't exactly fully healing manga but they're all slice of life.

YIPPEE!! I drew Kira, the Kawajiri family and @ace-the-fox ocs as dogs in Bluey.

Yoshikage & Haruka are Shiba Inus. It's a good thing Bluey already has few existing Shiba characters so I know what they look like. Colouring dad Kira's fur is a pain cos yellow is the hardest colour to work for me and I tried to not make him eyestraining to look at. I also have to draw his iconic tie and ngl it looks funny on his dog form. Haruka is more easier as she just have pastel yellow fur. I also turn her hair bandana into a neckerchief, if you don't mind.

The Kawajiri family. Shinobu is a Toller Retriever and Kosaku is a Belgian Sheepdog. Since both of them are different dog breeds, I find it tricky to make their kids as they're a mix breed. Momo & Hayato takes the most from their mom but I added some tiny elements they got from their dad such as tail shapes and thick coats. I gave Shinobu and Momo a headband and hairclips respectively, while Hayato wear a vest.

Lastly is Misao. She is a Yorkiepoo (terrier + poodle). She's the easiest of all the rest. I literally traced over a Bluey Terrier character and gave her curly fur, bangs and call it a day.

Day 1 - Envoy

“Thank you for asking to meet, Ogawa-san,” Haruka said. Her voice was her usual semi-monotone, bearing no emotion as befitting a samurai. However, lordly intent filled her being, both in the cadence of her words and the emphasis on sharper consonants, as well as the intense gaze and squared shoulders. Despite this, the Lady of the Southern River Valley bowed to her guest. Not extravagantly so – her guest wasn’t the Ogawa lord, after all, and after what the Ogawa had done, they deserved nothing more than the slightest nod toward courtesy. Her formal regalia, the red and black kimono and hakama with overcoat, clung tightly to emphasize the effect, made complete with the ancestral sword that was held to her side with the traditional broad sash. Sometimes, it paid to rely on ceremony.

Ogawa Nakayori bowed more deeply. “Thank you, Lady Uesugi,” he said. Calm and composed, he wore similar – if simpler – garb in his clan colors, and he bore no sword despite his rank. It was a sign of peace and respect, a sign of what they’d done to Uesugi lands in the recent past. Indeed, the lack of a weapon on the Ogawa diplomat and the message that he was being sent was the only reason he wasn’t cut down, either by her guard or by townsfolk. Her people had lost friends and family in that fateful attack. Many still held grudges.

Haruka gestured toward the pillow waiting across the table that separated them and sat on her own. Meeting in the council meeting hall provided them with a central location where both their guards could eye one another in peaceful hostility while the talks proceeded. Braziers and crystalline lanterns provided plenty of light to see by, well enough to read and write. Sheets of paper were set upon the table, complete with inkstones and brushes.

“I admit, I did not think I’d be meeting with you personally,” the Ogawa representative said as he knelt. “I normally meet with a chamberlain or at times the head of the clan military.”

“I thought this important enough to handle personally. After all, there is much to discuss.” The Lady’s voice was steely even behind her Doman respect.

Ogawa visibly shrank a little. Wincing, he took a deep breath. “Yes, well, after what occurred between our clans, my Lord will appreciate knowing you take peace so seriously.”

It was a backhanded comment, one made by someone who thought they didn’t bear responsibility for death and destruction. Haruka bristled internally, but it never showed. Her eyebrow didn’t even twitch.

“Of course, Ogawa-san. After all, there remains the reparations for what was done to our home.”

Such a forward thrust left the representative on the backfoot. He wasn’t used to such bluntness. “Reparations, my Lady?”

“Indeed. Your clan attacked our home, occupied our lands.”

“The Ogawa clan was answering a call for help, Lady Uesugi.”

Only then did Haruka allow herself to show emotion. It was calculated, a vision of the simmering anger underneath. As the wyrm inside her howled for blood, a brow finally rose. “Truly? We have evidence to the contrary. Shiba?”

A door opened, sunlight shining through and glaring off the table. Nakayori grimaced in the brightness, lifting a hand to shield his eyes. The door was shut soon enough, however, and they were joined by a man with salt-and-pepper hair, wearing the red-and-black of the Uesugi but whose kimono bore two crests: one the twin sparrows of the clan, and the other of his family.

“Ogawa-san,” Haruka said politely. “This is Shiba Tanemune, my magistrate and retainer.”

Ogawa dipped his head, but Shiba didn’t return the gesture. Despite his upbringing, he let his calm anger show distinctly on his demeanor. The attack had been on his home, which had finally known not only peace, but some semblance of normalcy. He thumbled the pommel of his katana as he glared at the representative. His other hand bore a dozen sheets of paper.

It was Haruka who continued. “In our possession are the letters sent between various individuals – the clan your family swears fealty to, the headman of your family, among others – that show that such a stance is not only a falsehood, but that you were promised a portion of Xiatien for your own. You would take our home.”

Shiba tossed the papers onto the table where Ogawa gazed at them. His breath caught, nerves in his eyes. Slowly, a hand reached out and took a sheet and he read it.

“The top sheet is most damning, I would say,” Shiba muttered, his voice like stones rolling down a hill.

“So, when I say reparations, I do mean that the Ogawa – and your masters, I hope – will be ensuring that there is recompense.”

“How did you get these?” Takayori said, his voice strangled.

Haruka’s expression was stoney again. “The loom of fate happened to bring them into my hands, and now yours.” It was a covert threat. If the Ogawa envoy understood who might be the weaver of said loom, he’d know his family was on thin ice.

It was also a bluff, even if a safe one. Haruka wouldn’t give away that she had her own network of spies.

If Takayori understood, he didn’t show it. Instead, he spoke in a much more even voice. “The commander of the forces who came here was killed, reportedly by your wife using some profane spell. What more could we do?”

Haruka nearly reached out and grabbed the man’s kimono. He had the audacity to accuse Reenah of consorting with vile practices. But again, nothing showed, her mask whole and unbroken.

“He was killed by blade, not spell, Ogawa-san, in combat for the sake of the Takko’s defense. I trust you will clear up such misconceptions.” It wasn’t a request, even if Haruka’s tone had become conversational. “But to answer you more directly, your clan will share a part of your crops with the Uesugi to help with the unseasonable storms the Valley has been dealing with for some time now. This will be the start of the reparations made by the Ogawa to the Uesugi. And if shipments do not begin swiftly,” she gestured toward the papers, “I am reasonably certain some individuals would find all this a rather enticing read.”

The representative paled. Slowly, he nodded.

Nodding, Haruka smiled, showing a hint of teeth. Had she fangs like her wife, it would look genuinely vicious. “Good. That can be the start of the official declaration. Now, let us speak of what else can be done.”

Niji MariKart Qualifiers Results:

Recently the Qualifiers Round for the Niji MariKart Tournament just passed and along with it means next week will consist of the Main Tournament itself. While there were some mishaps like Akira losing his connection during the tournament, please remember that this is all for fun.

The top five players will proceed to the main tournament next week on the 18th, with the exception of division C because Kanda can’t participate on that day meaning Mao gets to qualify despite coming in 6th.
