Idk what is it with legacy but everything seems to me like it was written on a napkin five minutes before the programming started. I'm crying about the ancient magic and the fact that nothing was done with it. The friends weren't involved with the plot enough, Fig was involved too much (were they trying to copy year 4 and 5 with Rakepick???), we CAN'T FUCKING ALLY WITH RANROK, Isodora and Bragbor successfully cooperated to create the repository but we can't have main character and ranrok paralleling that and working together.

You know, you're absolutely right.

This game was like...almost incredible. But in every area it could have been incredible, there's this pesky "almost" stuck as a prefix for this reason or that reason.

The companion mod is proof that not enough was done with the characters in this game (Amit doesn't even get a quest-line) but it's obvious that the characters are still compelling. Poppy and Natsai are three dimensional and lovable, and Sebastian's popularity speaks for itself. Even the ones who aren't meant to be in focus can be well crafted. (They rolled a real winner with Ominis, I said what I said.)

Fig was obviously meant to be a significant character (I am still not clear on what subject he teaches, does anyone know...?) and given his connection to the plot through Miriam, that's to be expected. He's a lovable guy and I don't mind him being so relevant, but it's obvious that (for better or for worse) the student characters are largely here by obligation and in the mind of the developers, they're more for side-quest content. That other characters like Fig and Lodgok are meant to be the important ones. Again, for better or for worse. I've heard it said that Sebastian's story should have just been the main storyline of the game and honestly...that's not entirely a bad idea.

Though frankly, I think a far better idea would have been just having Isidora as the villain instead of Ranrok.

Which is a good segue into talking about the other points you mentioned. I've talked about this before as well, but yes. Ranrok was beyond wasted as a character. What you describe would have been perfect, and yeah, it would have mirrored the backstory. It seems so obvious. Ranrok deserved more development and deserved to be portrayed as someone the MC might sympathize with. He deserved an ending of his own, where the player can side with him. Never mind the political, real-life reasons for why this was essential, it's just a no-brainer in an open world RPG that would have you believe it has multiple endings. (It really doesn't...)

Oh and that reminds me, this game pretends it has two endings when really, it only has one. Yes, you can choose to harness the Ancient Magic rather than becoming a Keeper, but it changes nothing about the game's ending. Half of the players were already going to head-canon their MCs as doing that anyway. The Ancient Magic is such an intriguing concept but apart from being a map marker for The Fifth Year to discover new plot threads, we don't learn much about it at all.

Honestly, the most fascinating the Ancient Magic ever gets is when we're learning about it through Isidora. The scene where she removed her father's pain was genuinely chilling, and in that I saw the glimmer of a terrifying villain wielding magic we had never seen before. Isidora would have been the best kind of villain because she would have believed she was doing the right thing and would have had understandable reason why she believed it. What she could do to those who oppose her...what she did to the people she loved, and all because she wanted to help them...the power of Ancient Magic is frightening, in no small part because we know so little about it, but we could definitely have stood to learn a little bit more, especially as it's unlikely to be featured again. (Unless they make a sequel.)

I think above all, what this story needed was more nuance. Everything is way too black and white. There are hints of something more, but they get dropped almost immediately as they get brought up. Maybe that's why Sebastian's storyline is a fan-favorite. His dynamic with Ominis and where his story ultimately goes, not to mention the sympathetic reasons why it ends up where it does...and the actual impact The Fifth Year's choices can have on this story...yeah, the rest of the game could take note. Isidora isn't developed enough, and neither is Ranrok, when they could both be exceptional characters.

You want to know my favorite scene of the game, bar none? The scene where Lodgok opens up about meeting Miriam and his grief at her death. That. That is the kind of nuance I'm talking about, and combined with the scene's atmosphere and raw emotion...I teared up. I mean it. That was so powerful. I wish more of the Ranrok storyline was like that more of the time. Any story in the Potterverse that centers around a Goblin Rebellion cannot afford to be this black and white, and we all know why. But in general, it's just better storytelling if there are more shades of gray.

Lihuan grew up in a palace near the Emperor’s palace, her father a very wealthy man who had gained the royal family’s favour and her mother a concubine that was gifted to the emperor to marry him for his services. She grew up in the typical style, though her curiosity outside the empire’s borders caused some talk within her peers. She nevertheless was the apple of her father’s eye and never once was bad or distant to her.

Beautiful, accomplished and popular within the harem, she was a direct slave of the emperor’s mother who was very much loved by her. She exceeded at everything and was an ideal woman, even wife material. Soon, she caught the emperor’s attention and decided to marry her off to one of his most loyal men for his services, Hui. She came back and the two of them vowed to never part from the other again. Lihuan’s dowry allowed Noelle to uphold her shop and name and Lihuan began teaching pureblood children the Mahoutokoro ways of duelling. They hid the nature of their relationship for years until Lihuan told her nephew on her deathbed. Lihuan outlived Noelle only for a few months.

Deaglán grew up in Limerick for most of his childhood and spent a great deal of time within the company of his family, less so among their magical neighbors. At the age of eight, Deaglán and his siblings moved into their grandfather’s home in a neat little town they call Belfast — or rather, the countryside along the outskirts of the city, away from all of the riots and turmoil within the muggle community and the politics of the wizarding one.

Hogwarts turned out to be close, but not entirely what she wanted either, so in her fifth year she transferred out to the Wizarding Academy of Dramatic Arts to finish her schooling. During that time, she continued sending letters to her friend-turned-sweetheart, Rowan Herrity, who seemed intent on pursuing her in spite of their new disconnect.

After graduation, she married Rowan, and opted to more casually pursue a career in singing while simultaneously trying to convince her husband to pull a little farther away from his familial obligations, not interested in the slightest in being the Lady of Mulstone Manor. Such a perspective drove a bit of a wedge between her and her father-in-law, Lachlan Herrity, but Rowan nevertheless agreed to, at the very least, beginning their life together separate from the life of his father and the estate. Unfortunately, their time was cut short when she was bitten by a venomous tentacula when Deaglán was eight. Rowan did his best to save her from the predicament but ultimately fell victim to the same fate as well.

Father: Rowan Marcus Herrity

The only son and heir apparent to a more reclusive pure-blooded family, Rowan first took interest in plants as he watched the raspberry bushes grow around the property of Mulstone Manor and observed some of the more magical plants in the greenhouses. When at Hogwarts, he was sorted into Ravenclaw and swiftly allied himself with fierce and like-minded students, including Genevieve Boera in second year, a newly immigrated Slytherin who he took a liking to. While upset when she chose to leave for the Wizarding Academy of Dramatic Arts for her last two years of schooling, he did not stop in his efforts to remain in contact with her and maintain their relationship. He was quick to propose to her after graduating from Hogwarts in spite of complaints from his father, who thought Genevieve was more encouraging of poor decisions and was steering Rowan away from the family and into a life more fitting for a muggle.

An avid herbologist, Rowan devoted his life to the study of dangerous plants, both magical and otherwise. After leaving home, he built up a life with Genevieve by his side, and five kids (each with a few years between them). No more than a year after the youngest child was born, Rowan died trying to save Genevieve from a venomous tentacula, leaving Deaglán and his siblings to go live with their grandfather. While the inheritance was secured, Rowan had written it in his will that the children would not receive it until one of them married or the youngest came of age — a notion that Deaglán always a thought had to deal less with his siblings and more with the frustration toward his grandfather.

Grandfather: Lachlan Cathal Herrity

Born and raised in Belfast and having spent most of his life within the confines of Mulstone Manor, Lachlan lived a comfortable albeit reclusive life that only became more so after the death of his wife, the late Lady Venetia. Caretaker of the estate and guardian to Deaglán and his siblings, Lachlan sought to mend the bridges that he burned with Deaglán’s father after he had left home and hopefully find a new heir for the estate. He was a stern man with a rough voice whose thousand-mile eyes and tone were the only betrayers of his caustic and severe manner, offering a softer look into the depths of his dilapidated spirit from years of solitude.

He tried to do well by his grandchildren even if he was terrible at showing it, and while in control of their money and future for the time until they came of age or married, he intended to do everything he could to secure the future of not only his family but his home.

Elder Sister: Dubheasa Joanne Herrity

Uncontrollable, untamable, unruly. In spite of being the oldest, Dubheasa was only responsible when it came to looking after her younger siblings, but otherwise would throw all manners of caution and, well, manners to the wind. Vulgar, candid, and a little too reminiscent of her mother for Lachlan’s tastes, she is the wildcard of the Herritys.

Younger Sister: Margaery “Maggie” Anne Herrity

While Lachlan favors Maggie for being the most well-behaved of the bunch, Deaglán always enjoyed her company for the fact that she seemed to have an unrelenting imagination capable of dreaming up the most wild ideas.

Younger Brother: Cillian Tadhg Herrity

Cillian enjoys the life of leisure the most out of all of the Herrity children, and would likely be the happiest taking over the estate if he wasn’t one of the furthest down the line and terrible at management to boot. While he could never intentionally hurt a soul, making tough decisions was not a line that he could pick up.

The family “baby,” Poppy is prone to mimicking Dubheasa in her behaviors, but in Deaglán’s eyes is all the more charming for it. Why am I NOT surprised to learn that you'd spare Sebastian Sallow. Guess it's okay that he just murdered his uncle huh? After he took them in and took care of Anne, yeah sure, why not just AK him for trying to keep his nephew out of trouble.

As ever, sparing Sebastian is less about him than it is about Azkaban itself. If you turn him in, that's where he might go. Use of an Unforgivable automatically puts Azkaban time on the table, and this is world that seemingly does not have lawyers. So there's a very good chance that Sebastian would do Azkaban time, and that outcome is unacceptable to me. That place is inhumane, plain and simple.

Sebastian is sixteen at most when he casts the Killing Curse. I'm not saying he shouldn't have consequences for his actions, but on the other hand, living with the guilt of what he did - and also alienating Anne, possibly forever, seems like punishment enough in a world that does not have due process or adequate understanding of mental health.

No shade on you if you're a fan of Solomon, but I am not. You say he was trying to keep his nephew out of trouble. But not only had he kicked Sebastian out of their home, he was literally attacking him and MC at the time Sebastian killed him. None of this makes it okay for Sebastian to do what he did, but I don't find Solomon defensible or sympathetic in any way. By all appearances, he was emotionally abusive to Sebastian, and had completely given up on Anne.

Also, the man was quite literally too stupid to live. He attacks Sebastian and MC, underage teenagers, rather than fighting...oh I don't know, the damn Inferi that are currently swarming the three of them? Inferi that only became hostile because of Solomon, by the way. Because he destroyed the relic. He saw an ancient, dark magical artifact that he knew nothing about and decided to blow it up, because what's the worst that could happen? I'm sorry, this dumbass is supposed to be a former Auror?

Sebastian should not have been messing around with dark magic, but what's freaking hilarious is that he actually had the situation under control before Solomon blundered in and nearly cost MC and Sebastian their lives. His biggest problem was that he always refused to listen. Because he'd already made up his mind about Sebastian and what he was doing, so why wait and actually gather information?

Sebastian went too far, it's true. But Solomon sucks. He is not a satisfactory caretaker at all.

During March, the old viscountess told her dear friend, the Dowager Duchess of Aldery [Cora] that she felt her organs failing and betraying her and that she was certain that she wouldn't make it to Christmastime. The Dowager told her not to get ahead of herself, and went to see a doctor, and indeed, she had only seven months left.

On the 18th of July, 1968, she celebrated her last birthday [87th] with every single relative. The Countess of Harrendale and Helwater, her dearest and most favourite daughter Alexandra was suspicious of such grandeur and melancholic tone, but daren't say nothing. Days later, she called to make a last rewrite of her will and began to stay more at home and rarely left Winbourne. Her son, the viscount – though not considered such yet– began asking, but she wouldn't budge.

By the end of October, it was clear that the viscountess' death was deteriorating and would die at any given moment.

On the 14th of November, all of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren reuinted at her deathbed to bid the magnificent viscountess farewell and expressed her personal wishes for each of them.

On the morning of the fifteenth, she was found on her bed, with signs of having died peacefully on her sleep. The funeral was fit for the woman she had been in life: heroic, magnificent, perfect and very much loved. They mourned her for three months, making her the most cried Somerset in history.

Noelle was born on the northern end of Tsushima Island overlooking the Korean Peninsula. As the daughter of a merchant and a respected member of the Sō clan, her childhood home was more comfortable than most, though nearly always empty. With her mother frequently visiting her sister, her father always en route to Busan, and herself constantly leaving for Mahoutokoro in her youth, Noelle never thought much of her home beyond it being stuff surrounded by walls. When the time came that she sent word to her schoolmate to floo her to England, she didn't feel as though she was leaving much behind.

An in-law of the Sō clan and a gifted dressmaker, Tatsuhime first encountered Yi-Byeon when she tagged along with her sister and brother-in-law as the latter was sent to engage with Korean tradesmen off the coast of Tsushima. At first wary, she came to appreciate his dark wit and diligence, and subsequently looked forward to tagging along with her brother-in-law in hopes of catching a glimpse of him again. After Yi-Byeon made the official move to Tsushima, Tatsuhime continued to press to see him — especially as her sister and brother-in-law was encouraging of the match, thinking that it would be just another step in the right direction of further solidifying good relations between the Japanese and Korean tradepost. In spite of Tatsuhime's softer nature, there was always a bit of a disconnect between her and Noelle as the latter sought more comfort in her Korean heritage — starting with her birth name and ending with favoring her father more in spite of his frequent absence.

Yi-Byeon was a merchant from Busan who frequently traveled back and forth between Tsushima to sell and acquire goods. By happenstance, he met Tatsuhime while on one of his trips and felt compelled to see her more frequently in following trips. Between the two of them he was the more practical one, but quickly fell for Tatsuhime's amusingly vague nature. The two married about two years after their first meeting as Yi-Byeon decided to move his base of operations over to Tsushima where they continued to reside as husband and wife. While Noelle loved her mother, she always seemed to find more favor with Yi-Byeon as both shared in their more realistic views of the world at large, especially as she came to put more stake in her Korean identity as opposed to the part of her that set roots in Japan.

Noelle came across Diana as she was wandering a bit helplessly through Diagon Alley after traveling by floo from an old schoolmate's fireplace. The first time they spoke, she mistook her Korean name for "Noelle" and the latter didn't have the heart to correct her. Lost and alone, and barely speaking English, Diana welcomed her with open arms and gave her work in her shop, as well as her last name and a place that felt more like home than Tsushima ever did. Diana acted as a mentor and mother to Noelle in the absence of her own family, and upon Diana's retirement, she bowed out and gave it over to Noelle, who showed a deep love of the work and the shop.

Some may mistake her occasional aloofness for arrogance, but she does have a soft spot for the unacknowledged and those that frequent her shop. While the disgrace of being expelled from Mahoutokoro initially turned her away, the pair eventually reconciled.

Noelle was vaguely aware of Lihuan during their time at Mahoutokoro but never ended up conversing much. Later in life, they crossed paths in England and what started out as some fun turned into a deep affection. Unfortunately their time together didn't last too long as Lihuan traveled back east to pursue becoming a samurai in Japan, much to Noelle's discontent.

Eventually, Lihuan returned and Noelle was determined not to let her go again. They carried on with their relationship in a hidden manner, but lived the rest of their lives together in contentment.

Ex: Hayashi Toru - Noelle considers Toru to be the worst mistake of her life, yet she still recognizes in spite of the hardship that he caused her, she wouldn't be the woman that she ended up being. A pureblood wizard form a dangerous family both in and out of the wizarding world, they met at Mahoutokoro. Noelle felt a close tie to Toru ever since he gave her a tour during her first week, being a year ahead of her. As her mother's more trusting side took precedence, Noelle found later that she placed her faith blindly in a boy who she would have been better off shunning, who was frighteningly skilled in toying with the free will of others.

࿐ History ࿐

Nearly all of her life, No-Eul has been shrouded in white. The first time that she drew breath was amid a dark winter blizzard that shook the island of Tsushima and covered the grass in a blanket snow. An only child to muggle parents, she grew up in a home of moderate comfort due to the profession of her father and the connections of her mother. When she was seven, news was broken to her family by way of a school admittance letter that she was, in fact, a witch, invited to enroll as a day student at Mahoutokoro.

After seven years of going back and forth to the school, an invisible rift had formed between her and her family of whom she rarely saw, and even when she did, oddly enough she still felt as though she was far away from them. Her time at school didn't fare much better as tensions continued to rise between Japan and Korea, and her place in the world became a tug-of-war between the two halves of her heritage and the uncertain addition of magic thrown into the mix. In her vulnerability she took solace in her closest friend at school and first love, Hayashi Toru. It was this vulnerability that landed her in a difficult position as she poured her heart out to him and he asked for her trust in order to "help" her. With a little bit of hesitance yet an encouraging smile, he cast a spell that No-Eul had never heard of, Imperio, and in a moment, it was as if a weight had been pulled from her chest. She seemed to float through the next two years much lighter than before with her surroundings feeling like a blip in the distance. It was a comforting feeling while being blissfully unaware of her surroundings. Some such as her other friend, Fumina, noticed a difference, but No-Eul wasn't that much of a social butterfly for anyone to truly think much of it.

It wasn't until she was sixteen that Fumina decided to confront her on her strange behavior, particularly as it related to the excessive amount of time that she spent with Toru. When Fumina came to realize what was going on, she threatened to expose what was happening, and Toru prompted No-Eul to cast dark magic on her. Amid doing so, No-Eul managed to break out of the Imperius Curse but it was already too late as others had witnessed what she had done, and her robes immediately turned a stark white. It wasn't until her trial that it was revealed she was under the Imperius Curse, but with members of Toru's family on the Council of Magical Law, the matter was covered up and No-Eul was in too big a state of despair to care.

Shamed by her school, shunned from the wizarding community, and frightful of what fate awaited her if she decided to return home, she sent word to Fumina asking for her to grant one last favor and let her flee the country. Fumina agreed on the condition that she would never reach out to her again, and thus, covered up to her knees in white ash, No-Eul arrived in London and would soon put her birth name to rest, instead becoming Noelle Brenton.

Create something that shows your OC’s love for their best subject, whether that be DADA, Quidditch, or even the dreaded Potions class. You could even show appreciation for their favourite Professor!

Pov 2nd year

“Time for my favorite class! Herbology!” Elisen exclaimed to Logan who was walking next to her rubbing his ears

Logan side eyed her and just nodded his head “Herbology is your favorite class? Well don’t forget your damn earmuffs or whatever they are called, I almost went deaf in there yesterday!” Logan said turning around to Elisen just to see she like thirty feet away from him “Elisen…walk faster”

Elisen stared at him for a couple of seconds and continued to take her precious time which just made Logan went back over there to drag her to class. They made it just in time to class before the professor shut the door “Sorry we’re almost late sir, Logan was taking his precious time!”

Professor Fowler nodded his head then pointed at the two empty spots near the table and told them to go stand over there while he started to begin his lesson on Aligriwid, he picked up a plant off the counter behind him to show the class. “To muggle eyes it is merely a plant, which provides cover for some wildlife, and is used by blackbird swarms for roosting” He said passing the plant to a kid in front of him and told the kid to pass the plant around to everyone else so they could get a good look at it.

Professor Fowler started explaining some of the properties for the plant, one of them being the digestion of the plant and how it would make you completely silent for exactly 73 hours. “There was a reason this plant became illegal in 1769, wizards would use this on people to keep their secrets because nobody wanted to be forced to be silent.” He said explaining the history behind the plant which made Elisen turn her head to Logan with a huge smile

“Isn’t this cool Logan? The plants in this realm is fascinating! The plants in our realm just try to kill us, but there are ones here where they make you go completely silent! How can you not like this class?” Logan shrugged his shoulders choosing to ignore Elisen in her rant of how plants are cool in favor of inspecting to plant

Logan raised his head and the professor called on him “What happens after the 73 hours?”

“Oh there’s just this sticky substance where you can’t digest anything sweet or any artificial sugar”
