'Though Hollywood has made decades of attempts to bring the story of J. Robert Oppenheimer to life, those films apparently weren't at the forefront of actor Cillian Murphy's mind while he prepared to play the famous American physicist in Christopher Nolan's historical drama "Oppenheimer." In fact, the two films that helped him connect with his work the most had nothing at all to do with Oppenheimer, the atomic bomb, or even World War II.
Instead, seemingly to understand the specific tone, pace, and grand scale "Oppenheimer" hoped to capture, Murphy told the Independent that he looked to two classic films: "Lawrence of Arabia" and "Amadeus." The former — a critically acclaimed three-and-a-half hour historical and biographical epic directed by legendary British filmmaker David Lean — helped Murphy interpret "the scale and the life-story aspect" of covering Oppenheimer's 30-year journey from troubled student to scientific legend to political pariah.
But while "Lawrence" gave Murphy the outlines of "Oppenheimer's" bigger picture, "Amadeus" provided the texture of a few brushstrokes. Through the bitter (and almost entirely fictitious) rivalry between Antonio Salieri (F. Murray Abraham) and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (Tom Hulce), Murphy better understood how Oppenheimer's rivalry with AEC chairman Lewis Strauss (played by haunting post-Marvel Robert Downey Jr.) could appear on screen. Of course, it's unlikely "Oppenheimer" provided Murphy his first encounter with either film, as he has long teased an eclectic knowledge and appreciation of classic cinema.
The former Peaky Blinders star is a bit of a film buff
Though Cillian Murphy was arguably best known (before "Oppenheimer," at least) for scene-stealing supporting roles in genre blockbusters like Christopher Nolan's "The Dark Knight" trilogy or the more recent "A Quiet Place Part II," the 47-year-old Irish actor has expressed a personal interest in films far from the contemporary or the mainstream.
In an interview with Far Out magazine, Murphy shared some of his all-time favorite pieces of cinema, only two of which postdate 1980. Among his picks were Stanley Kubrick's "The Shining," Jerry Schatzberg's "Scarecrow," Neil Jordan's "The Butcher Boy," and Martin Scorsese's "Mean Streets." His oldest pick was Charles Laughton's 1955 film "The Night of the Hunter," while his most recent was the 2011 Ben Wheatley crime thriller "Kill List." Murphy also appears to share an affinity for Hal Ashby with "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" star Charlie Day — Murphy notes both "Harold and Maude" and "Being There" among his favorites, the latter of which inspired Day's ambitious 2023 directorial debut "Fool's Paradise."
For his part, Murphy seems to be passing down his love of film to his children. Declining to offer his four favorites to Letterboxd (a task that admittedly daunts most of those asked by the cinema social media platform), Murphy instead shared four films he'd recently watched with his family: "Midnight Cowboy," "The Big Lebowski," "Apocalypse Now," and "La Haine."'

Have you seen this childhood show: Round the Twist (1990-2001), Australia (English)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Commentary/Context/Memories: One of the most important shows of Aussie culture of all time, probably. To this day, whenever someone begins a sentence with “have you ever…” my brain always autofills in the rest of the theme song LMAO
This show was submitted twice!
[Mod A: Round the Twist was a comedy/drama about a widower Tony Twist (a sculptor) and his three kids (14 year old twins Linda and Pete, and 8 year old son Bronson) who move away from their house into a bohemian lifestyle at a old lighthouse on the Victorian Coast that turns out to be haunted by unexplainable events. They also interact with the local port community, in particularly a businessman Harold Gribble, who plots to evict the Twists from their lighthouse so he can turn it into a casino or tourist attraction. The show is pretty focused on the siblings: Linda who is into environmentalism, judo and is also the most normal (and spiritual) of the gang, while her twin Pete gets into embarrassing situations and is harassed often by Gribble Jr. and his gang. Bronson is obsessed with food/odors, and he is conflicted about being simultaneously left out the twins plots while also getting a lot of dangerous responsibility put on him during their mishaps. The siblings investigate the lighthouse which is haunted by a variety of ghosts that have died in shipwrecks, including that of their neighbour Nell’s family and also the previous lighthouse keepers (as punishment for not doing their jobs well). There are also mysterious occurrences like the scarecrow coming to life, lots of bones, a mysterious lady trying to kidnap Pete and a green baby found in a cabbage patch. While I knew of this show as being one of the most famous Australian children’s show (I’ve seen parodies done of it), I did not know that they had to change the child actors for most seasons (since it ran for a decade)!]

Hi hello this AU has ascended my psyche and i made some head-canons based on how small TDI moments may change.
Heath carries around bug spray everywhere he goes, and while he and Lincoln are still allies, whenever a bug is seen anywhere, Lincoln would scream at Heath to use the bug spray, very likely turning into a whole messy array of shouting.
While Harold left his drawers out on the cabin floor, Harriet could possibly leave a used pad on the floor instead, so in order to get her to confess, Danika would continuously leave her pads in increasingly ridiculous places (not steal them, girlie wouldn’t go that far).
Jody would try to get Glenn’s attention by continuously batting her eyelashes at him and applying a pile of lipstick, so much so that she either gets an eyelash in her eye and can’t see clearly for hours or she gets lipstick in her mouth which lingers all day, or both.
Since this time, it’s the Killer Bass that has mostly girls, Elizabeth could express despair that she expected this all along, and that their team was too full of ‘girly drama’ to stand a chance.
During the awake-a-thon, Justine’s trick of painting her eyelids backfires as Chris pokes her to check she is still alive and she falls down like a scarecrow, landing on Opal. Opal would be too flustered to go back to sleep after this, and she and Glenn would carry the Screaming Gophers to victory.
After Taylor gets eliminated, on the boat of shame, she discovers that a nest of chickens has taken roost in her hair, after which they burst out and fill the boat, wreaking havoc that involves a lot of screaming and tripping over.
A roast that Noelle could do to someone being stupid would be ‘I don’t think we’d need to manipulate your brain to fit through my hoop earrings, it’d probably fall out’
One night, maybe while Chris has some music playing from her ‘cottage’, Ginnifer would try and get everyone to have a mini dance party in her cabin, possibly resulting in Taylor getting her legs in a pretzel, Harriet busting out robot moves, DJ stealing the show with the most graceful ballet ever and Danika somehow setting a small fire to ‘light up the party’
You don't have to incorporate these into the official AU, but thanks so much for this AU that made me trad through a full AO3 chapter for the first time :)
Wow!! That's alot!!
For the Harriet thing.. um but leaving used pads around.. is gross (I mean that's why you'd pick it) but I don't think she's the type to change them in her cabin, just the bathroom so you don't accidentally get period blood all over the floor.

Coraline (Neil Gaiman) "The presence of another world that resemble the one you know but different, the Other Mother whole deal and the fact that she spies on people using dolls and sews buttons in place of her victim's eyes."
"Harold" from Scary Stories 3: More Tales to Chill your Bones (Alvin Schwartz) "Two cow farmers, Thomas and Alfred, were bored with their monotonous work one day, so they decided to make a scarecrow out of old sacs stuffed with straw. They based its appearance after another farmer they both hated, even giving it the name: Harold. They tied it to a pole and made fun of it, doing impressions of what his crazy voice might sound like or even just taking their cruelty out on him by kicking or punching him, or smearing food over the sac that was its face. One day they heard a grunt that could only have come from Harold. Thomas suggested throwing him in the fire, but Alfred insisted it was nothing to worry about. Then, Alfred noticed that Harold was growing bigger, but again told themselves it was just their imagination from being in the mountains too long.
Then one day, Harold stands up, walks out of the hut in front of Thomas and Alfred, then climbs up onto the roof and starts stomping around on it like a horse on its hind legs. Terrified and wanting to get away from Harold, they leave with their cows that same day, but halfway there they realize they forgot their milking stools and have to go back. The farmers convince each other that there really is nothing to be afraid of and draw straws to see who will go back. It is Thomas who drew the shorter straw, and now has to go back to to the hut, telling Alfred that he will catch up with him later. When Thomas does not return, Alfred returns to look for him, and sees Harold on the roof of the hut laying out Thomas' skinned corpse to dry in the sun."

The Pale Lady apparently scares people more than Harold, even though she commits no violent acts and only warns a young woman to leave an evil place.
And it is never explicitly stated if Harold is only hostile to the two men who abused him, or if he has it in for humans as a whole.
I would much rather encounter the Pale Lady than the scarecrow equivalent of Buffalo Bill.

Batman: Hush
This was a mix of well-written, fun, and intensely irritating.
Let’s start with the good: the art. The dreamy watercolours used for all the flashbacks really sold the story. I spent plenty of time staring at how pretty they were.
It certainly delivered as a run through the Rogues Gallery and a good chunk of the Bat family, plus I am extremely weak for Lois Lane and Bruce Wayne flirting on purpose in public (and Lois-Clark-Bruce-Selina team ups). I really enjoyed the way it just pinged around the whole cast and there was a lot of "who hasn't had a scene yet? Well it's YOUR turn!"
It's also a story that is fun to read as a trade, but must have really shone to follow in serial, because you got a rogue or so a month ticked off the checklist of 'culprit' as you went through it, leading to all sorts of interesting speculation. Like, I NOTICED that we didn't get Bane or Penguin in this story, both of whom also would have been reasonable 'I know your secret' villain solutions to this, as it would have been, in order, 'further payback for the brother thing not being true' or 'your bad business mirror image in Gotham'. Cobblepot knowing Batman is Bruce Wayne would play really well when Penguin is being written as a genuine threat to Gotham and leaning into his underworld fixer skillset (rather than when he's being written as a joke character).
The annoying parts: Look I know this was in Batman, the comic that is explicitly about Batman, but wow was Bruce's reality altering field that forces everyone else to be subservient to his own plot was in effect. This is why I tend not to read straight Batman plots, because Bruce has a habit of overwhelming the autonomy of everyone else on the page.
Helena and Harold in particular got done dirty here. I THINK all of Helena's situation got handwaved away as Scarecrow's fault? And what was the point of having Harold back for a single page to talk for the first time and then be shot dead? Poor Harold, you have never been used as more than a crude plot device.
In terms of "cognitive dissonance with what is going on in other books right now", Tim specifically manipulating Selina at Bruce's request right as simultaneously over in Robin his 16th birthday is occurring is...well you ARE a bastard aren't you Bruce. And you're not going to apologise for it.
I had to laugh that as far as I can tell, someone in the future just went 'everything we wrote here about Jason sounds good, let's make it canonically true when we resurrect Jason'. Like seriously. In hindsight the sliding of all of this between 'unreality to fuck with Bruce' to 'nope, that's really Jason' did his character a disservice. (Also that weird line about 'Jason' being the same age as Nightwing may have caused the accidental Jason age up issue? JASON IS STILL SEVENTEEN HERE IF HE'S REAL, editorial)
Also, being reminded that THIS is the famous ‘Jason cut Tim’s throat’ moment. Hah. “I’ll need stitches but Catwoman got the bleeding stopped”. This is not a hugely traumatic moment for Tim, folks. It’s a cut that’s already been bandaged. (Also Hush cuts Bruce’s neck almost identically in the very next issue, where’s the matching angst over that?)

[ Yes! From Scary Stories to Tell In the Dark: More Tales to Chill Your Bones. This monster isn't Harold, but there are big similarities. ]
HEY ITS THE BASTARD DAD
Ok its a demon? A demon that killed the mom and the gf? Whats its fuckin problem?
Daddy Issues Galore
Generally speaking taking "orders" from a parent is a bad sign for your relationships

Worried about their family members and SHIT at expressing it
CLASSIC ROCK FAN fucking moron

Ohhh hey its this chick again
WHUH
OH MY GOD SHE JUST? BLOOD?
Serial killer Sam bestie you dodged a bullet I think
UHHH WHATS SHE WANT WITH THEM
"FATHER" WHO ARE YOU
What the fuck
---
Alright so I did like that ep. I think taking normal white rural neighborhoods and making them fucked up is fun. Fascinated by this poor Emily girl, just. Like I hope she moves on? Makes a good life for herself? Like losing your parents, living with your aunt and uncle, loving them and the town, then one day without warning they drag you off to a cellar to sacrifice you to the town god, watch them get murdered by said god... and then you pack up and leave for somewhere else, anywhere else, because what else can you do? Man.
Uhh jury’s still out on favorites. This was a good ep for development and a good Sam ep. Actually how did Dean ever survive w/o Sam around to bail him out lmao.
But just. The way Dean goes on about the greater good, but ultimately its more about what their dad wants them to do. Sam’s often more swayed by his bond with his family, as estranged as he feels from them. But this flip flops, back and forth, Saving people, saving family. Its interesting.
And the plot thickens. Dad Winchester’s on the trail of what killed their mom and Sam’s fridged gf, this Meg chick is? After the bros? And was clearly lying to try and get close to Sam for reasons unclear. Hm.
Anyways I get apple pie now so definitely a win

Consider this, a Wizard of Oz AU featuring Lili as the protagonist.
Okay, so Lili is the protagonist and we're following the idea of "The Wizard of Oz."
So the stand in for Toto is going to be Lili's dog, Mephisto (as referred to on the Campster website). If not Mephisto, it would most likely be Harold the rat and someone who's just deeply offended a girl has a rat for a pet since it's a "filthy creature."
I may create another list of characters on the journey filled with the Campers, but my current idea is this:
At the Motherlobe, people are being a tad more vocal about how... Lili can act just a bit nasty towards them. Lili feels justified because she feels they're treating her poorly so she's just treating them the same. And like, any apologies she gives are similar to: "I'm sorry you feel that way."
The Senior Agents (Hollis, Sasha, Camilla, and Morceau) are even turning on her. Someone just not wanting Harold around in the Noodle Bowl area is essentially the last straw before Lili runs off, taking a page out of Razputin's book. (Raz is probably away on a mission or with his family, somewhere.)
Course, she doesn't get too far before something goes wrong. A really bad storm hits the nearby city as she's trying to get to it while also keeping Harold safe. Harold runs into a pretty run down building, and Lili chases after. Lili and Harold end up getting knocked out and the two wake up hours later.
Now in the world of Ot, Lili finds the building in the Munchkin city, and a giant orange bubble comes down. Out from it comes Raz, with slicked back hair. He introduces himself as "Razinda" and introduces Lili to the rest of the "Munchkins" which are made up of much smaller versions of the campers from Camp Whispering Rock.
They thank her for killing the "Wicked Fallen Crown of the East," and point out that there are legs sticking out from under the building. The munchkins all cheer and suddenly, Lili is left with something that the Wicked of the East carried on him.
Just in time for the Wicked Dentist of the West to arrive and try to take it. Razinda explains it's not his to take, as it now belongs to Lili, and the Wicked Dentist instead kidnaps Raz.
The munchkins can't do anything do anything to help him, but they can tell Lili where she can go to get help. From the "Wizard of Ot."
So she follows the brick road and comes across a scarecrow woman with a big heart and motherly instinct who can't really scare the crows away because "The poor darlings are just hungry! And the farmer has so much corn!" A bit ditzy and air-headed due to the literal lack of a brain. Though, she can't remember why she doesn't have a brain. They don't have a long time before trouble brews from the corn field in the shape of a shadowy columbine that tries to chase the two until they get into the thick woods. Impacting the woods, the shadow simply disappears.
The next one they come across is the Cold and Heartless Tin Man, who tells a story of how he knew a woman he loved, but was terrified of his own feelings. Which drew upon something wicked that cursed his axe and chopped him up. The more the axe chopped up, the less he wanted the woman to see him. He was rebuilt, but nothing could mend the broken heart. So he doesn't really care about the other's being in a place they're not supposed to, nor seeing the Scarecrow, who is inexplicably compelled towards him. But once again, shadows plague them in the form of evil trees trying to throw things like apples and beehives until they're chased into a deeper part of the forest and the shadows disappear.
The trio is running ahead, and suddenly, Lili realizes that Harold is missing! They hear a roar that she begins running towards, followed by the motherly scarecrow, and the tin man follows. The third and final member is a Tiny Lion who is trying to pick on Harold, only to be hit by Lili and she scolds him. The Tiny Lion tries to justify it, saying he's a wild animal that has to eat and Lili says "pick on someone your own size!" The Tiny Lion reveals that there's no one sized like him. They're all bigger, apart from Lili and Harold. And he's not courageous enough to stand up to those creatures. Which one of them is revealed in the form of a beast covered in shadows that can breath black fire, which the Scarecrow is very scared about. The trio once again have to run. And again, the shadow chases them until it fades again.
The trio are left with the city where the Wizard of Ot lives, with only what's left of the brick road going through what appears to be a poppy field. The other three remark that they don't recall a poppy field around the city, but Lili's too determined to get answers and kick that Dentist's butt to care. She begins to run through the field, trying to get there faster and the others chase after her. But... the flowers have a much stronger scent than what Lili remembers. Smelling familiar... of a warm voice long forgotten. She wants to remember that voice. If she pressed her ear to the ground, could she hear it? The girl and her rat fall asleep in the poppy field, shortly followed by the Lion. The scarecrow and tin man are without a solution, and soon it's revealed that the Wicked Dentist and Razinda is watching this unfold.
Razinda begs the Wicked Dentist to allow him to help the group, and the Wicked Dentist agrees, only if he approves of the spell. Razinda says "a little flurry" and the Wicked Dentist agrees, proclaiming that the snow will melt soon anyways.
But it's enough that the girl, rat, and Lion wake up, and that the Tinman gets rusted and the four others help him.
They head to the City, and the guard at first refuses to let them in, until the others start bemoaning how they'll never be able to help the ones they love without seeing the Wizard. Swayed by this, the Gaurdswoman with glasses lets them in and begins to show them around. She remarks her own love is one she doesn't get to see a lot, that being the "Good Witch of the South."
The group get all gussied up and presentable to see the Wizard, who is powerful and all knowing. He tells them that the only way to get what they want is to find the "True Evil that Plagues Ot."
The five set out against the Wicked Dentist anyways, Lili thinking that he's the only one that could be the "True Evil."
As they try to approach, the Wicked Dentist now sends his own creature to try to take the girl and get the little trinket he's been after. Now, a lumbering creature he calls "Linda" with several other mutated fish goes out and fights the group, Linda ultimately grabbing Harold and Lili grabs onto it, trying to get her to let go as Lili desperately tries to make sure Harold is fine. Meanwhile the other three are left worse for wear after the fish retreat.
The Wicked Dentist holds Lili hostage, trying to get her to give up the trinket so "the shadows stop bothering him." Until then, she's kept in a dungeon, far from Harold.
The others have to break in and they think Lili needs to be saved, but the Wicked Dentist comes into her dungeon screaming as the shadow beast tries to harm him.
Lili runs up to it, and the shadow beast cowers in fear. Lili fights it and it spits out a golden compass, which the Wicked Dentist gathers up. He suddenly has a change of heart, releasing the control of all of the creatures and Lili takes the chains off of Razinda before the Wicked Dentist declares that "there will be no more cruel experiments, because this place will be BLOWN TO SMITHEREENS!"
As the trio is trying to head in, Harold, Lili, and Razinda bump into them and push them away from the building that is about to EXPLODE.
Once it does, Razinda remarks about the shadow that forms. The most evil thing in all of Ot. It takes away people's hardships to continuously torment them with it. And there's no way for them to heal without those things.
The shadow reforms out of the rubble, and tries to attack, but Lili is ready.
She individually attacks the different traumas that they all had, gaining pieces of their old selves, like the Scarecrow's brain, the rest of the Tin Man's heart (and that allows the Scarecrow and Tin Man to finally realize they remember each other), the Tiny Lion's bravery, but during the time she's about to fight Razinda's fear, the trinket she has is torn off. Razinda tries to give it back to Lili, only for Lili to have to face something that she found traumatic.
She's left staring into a box that she knows holds someone dear to her, as she holds the hand of another version of herself crying. There are also others who care about her also crying. The shadow tries to take this from her, but Lili defies it. Right after, the trinket is thrown back and Lili instead throws it to the creature that tore it off of her. The creature cannot handle it, and fades away. Leaving Lili as the hero.
But she needs to get back home. She realizes this now. She tries to go back to the Wizard to explain she defeated the two wickeds and the evil that plagued the land, but the Wizard refuses to help her. As the four argue about it, Harold goes over to a curtain to pull back, which then everyone turns to stare at, seeing Otto.
Otto explains that he came during a storm and people were so impressed that they thought he was a wizard, from there, he cultivated the city and land where he was now in charge. But he still has the way to get home.
Lili has tearful goodbyes and tries to head off with Otto, but Harold is no where to be seen. Someone tries to help her find him, only for them to realize that Otto is now leaving without her. He can't head back down, only up.
Lili fears that she may never go home, never see her father or friends again and Razinda returns with the worn out trinket. He explains the magic in it was repelling the shadows because it had the warmth and safety of a home imbued into it. The magic in it would take her to the place where she felt like she was home.
She has one more goodbye and then she and Harold leave, waking up in the Motherlobe. Some people are surprised she's there because she's clearly been out in the storm, with her soaked to the bone. Later, Truman and the rest of the "Dream Team" (Milla, Sasha, Morry, and Raz) arrives, having been trying to find the two and they're relieved.
Bonus after this adventure, Lili now has the capability of teleportation, as she teleported from that wrecked building, back to the Motherlobe.
