I'll be dressing for the Halloween season for the next 2 weeks.This dress used #Simplicity9291 (or #Butterick6453 before the realignment, they're the same pattern), made from a very stiff quilter's cotton. The only alterations was making the bodice about an inch longer. It coordinates perfectly with my skeleton earrings. I added the jacket cause it's chilly today. Fun fact, I actually made this dress for a Christmas thing. Sewing Blog...

When I started sewing little over a year ago, I was immediately drawn in. I love the way two-dimensional pieces of fabric become three- dimensional garments! It feels a bit like magic.

I started researching indie pattern designers and small fabric shops via Instagram. However, I realized real quick that sewing was not actually cheaper than buying off the rack. The system is set up this way; corporations pay abmissally small wages to workers in other companies and makes a huge profit. Did you know that right now there are more pieces of clothing than Earth's population? We have enough ready-to-wear clothing to last for at least another 10 years! (check out Stitch Please podcast episodes 123 and 124)

Because of this reality, I realized that I wanted to slow down my "production" of handmade garments. Not only does my budget not support a heavy sewing habit, but I also want to work on wearing the clothes I already have and loving them. This is my opinion and I don't judge anyone who makes more. Sewing can be a source of relaxation and rejuvenation for folks!

I chose some lovely cotton/linen blend fabric from Style Maker Fabrics. I love big print florals! I also love damask inspired patterns.

Adjustments made : I used a size 16 bust and graded to a size 20 waist. I'm because a tall rectangle <3. My hips/butt go back to a size 16. I use craft brown paper to redraw the side panels of the bodice because the fabric was touching my armpit skin and rubbing. I lower the armscye 1/2 and that seemed to do the trick.

Overall, I am super happy with this dress! I love a maxi dress for the summer. I recommend the Holyoke 10/10. I will definitely be making another next summer.

Someone said "Someday you'll have to start dressing like and adult" to me today. I don't know why they chose this outfit to ridicule, but they did. It's okay, you can be jealous of my skirt.
