I was on my one-on-one call with my mentee the other day and we were talking about her fear of inking and my intimidation on the ipadpro. She was afraid of inking because she thought she’d ruin her layout. It occurred to me that I was like that before. I got too comfortable on pencil that only my pencil work looks better. When it’s inked, it looks different like something is off. I thought I’d never get better at inking. But it took a ton of practice and a couple of Microns to really get to see some improvements.... .... Most of the time, we tend to look at other people’s work, admire them and compare ourselves to them without realizing how much time and effort they spent to honing their skills. It’s blood and sweat and I’m not kidding. I came to point when I even had to put band aids on my fingers because the calluses were hurting so bad! So at times, when I get messages asking me how I managed to get better, the very simple answer and something every seasoned letterer will tell you is practice.
