Any games that capture the weird and oppressive mood of tloz Majora's Mask? I realise this might be way too vague but I can't think of how else to put it
THEME: Oppressive Grief (Majora's Mask)
Hello friend. I thought about how to replicate the feeling of Majora’s mask, and I decided to focus on the elements of pressure, doom, grief, and defiance. These following games will have at least some of those elements, although not perhaps all of them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Afterlife: Wandering Souls, by Angry Hamster Publishing.
Afterlife: Wandering Souls is a macabre fantasy game set in surreal plane known as the Tenebris. You take on the role of a Wanderer—someone who died, but didn’t end up in Heaven, Hell, or any other traditional afterlife.  Devoid of any memories of your life on earth, you find yourself in an endless desert filled with gateways. Search different planes of existence for clues of your former life - or a semblance of one. Along the way you'll encounter strange inhabitants, alien cultures, and other humans who’ve lost all hope and are bent on destroying you.
If you believe the theory that Link is dead in Majora’s Mask, then this game might feel similar. The creator draws from many surrealist art, including Guillermo del Toro, as well as Hayao Miyazaki. Just as Link meets people who resemble folks he met in his adventures in Ocarina of Time, players here could meet bits and pieces of their former life. This game also has a supplement called A Wanderer’s Guide To Limbos and Mirages, which dives further into the world of Tenebrae and asks you how your character will change as they venture into a world of weirdness and despair.
Stargazer, by Trollish Delver Games.
In the days of the sun's last gasp magic has returned to a ruined civilisation. The Song of Power can be heard on the wind: some believe it's the voice o the creator while others think the song is hastening the end of the world.  Memory-tattooed magicians delve into deep dungeons to uncover black music discs that hold the secrets of magic while hedonistic kings shower themselves in treasures.
This game is much more dire than the other options on this list. As it is OSR, it will focus more on combat and dungeon-delving than connecting with the people around you, so I think it better reflects the corrupted dungeons of the different areas of Majora’s Mask, such as the poisoned waters of Woodfall Temple, or the animated dead of Ikana Canyon.
Bleak Spirit, by potatocubed.
Bleak Spirit is a storytelling game where you and your friends create a brooding, cryptic tale about a stranger in a strange land. Everything is falling apart, crumbling, corrupted, and the wanderer carries the potential for a return to past glories – or the power to sweep away all that remains.
You will all take turns playing the wanderer – the destiny-wreathed individual who is going to bring change to the world, one way or another. The wanderer is the one who faces the dangers of the world, who discovers the lore, and who will ultimately leave things different to how they found them.
Ultimately, Link doesn’t belong in Termina - he’s come from somewhere else, and he doesn’t want to stay there, he want’s to go home. Bleak Spirit is a GM-less game that lets the table dive into a world that is wrong, in one way or another, both creating the details of the world and narrating how the lonely adventurer meets every challenge.
The World Is Ending And We Are Very Large Dogs, by Eden.
The world is ending in one week. This we know for a fact. It is too late to stop it. It cannot be slowed down anymore. Especially not by you, because you are just a group of large dogs. All you can do is try and make the final days as best as you can for those that are near and dear to you. Your owners, your community, the other wild dogs in the park, whoever you hold dear.
The World is Ending and We Are Very Large Dogs is a GM-less collaborative storytelling game for 2+ players, wherein the players work to weave stories of bright moments in the face of Armageddon. The mood, intensity and tone of this game are up to you, the players, to decide, as the adaptable ruleset is designed for anything from a pulpy Mars Attacks-esque alien invasion to a a dark, mournful, melancholic ending.
This game comes with a number of various scenarios to reflect the range of tone you can play with when it comes to facing the end of the world. The dogs’ goal of doing their best to make their friends happy in the face of inevitable doom feels very similar to Link’s quest to help the people of Termina find peace even though their entire world is about to end.
Ten Candles, by Calvary Games.
Ten Candles is a zero-prep tabletop storytelling game designed for one-shot 2-4 hour sessions of tragic horror. It is best played with one GM and 3-5 players, by the light of ten tea light candles which provide atmosphere, act as a countdown timer for the game, and allow you to literally burn your character sheet away as you play.
Ten Candles is described as a "tragic horror" game rather than survival horror for one main reason: in Ten Candles there are no survivors. In the final scene of the game, when only one candle remains, all of the characters will die. In this, Ten Candles is not a game about "winning" or beating the monsters. Instead, it is a game about what happens in the dark, and about those who try to survive within it. It is a game about being pushed to the brink of madness and despair, searching for hope in a hopeless world, and trying to do something meaningful with your final few hours left.
If you really want to replicate the doom and hopelessness that the Clock Tower residents feel as the moon falls, this is absolutely the game for you.
Brinkwood SRD, by Far Horizons Co-Op.
This isn’t a game, but rather a system reference document for making your own game. I think this system is one of the best for creating a game similar to Majora’s Mask for a few reasons.
1. It’s built on Forged in the Dark mechanics, which give the players the ability to manage resources often at a cost. The players have to balance what is important and may have to make sacrifices to get what they want.
2. Clocks. Clocks are also great at imposing a sense of doom, by putting the characters on a clock and showing them what happens as time runs out. You could also include a mechanic that reverses the clocks to represent going back in time!
3. Masks. The masks in the original Brinkwood game transform their wearers, making them unrecognizable when they go on forays. You could use this mechanic to replicate a series of masks, all containing powers of beings who have died, in a story about a doomed world that your party is trying to save. What’s really interesting about this mechanic is that the Masks act as a separate set of playbooks that can be swapped among the party members, so that players can try out different powers and skill-sets. This is the biggest reason why I think the Brinkwood SRD would be fantastic for a Majora’s Mask kind of game.
(PS: if someone make this game please tell me about it)
Games I’ve Recommended in the Past
ARC, by Momatoes.
Legend of the Forgotten Ballad, by coolwayink. (bigger version of the game on the way!)

Wild Field Trips headcanons: the Frogwater Pond Gang
(this is for my Wild Kratts/Magic School Bus crossover AU if you're curious)
First of all, the so-called Frogwater Pond Gang consists of the following kids: Gavin, Ronan, Jenny, Katie, Aidan, and Nolan.
HC's for each of the kids:
Jenny:
The second oldest of the gang.
Full name: Jennifer Kitt
Likes to watch birds.
Favorite animal: raccoon
Sometimes her friends and family affectionately call her "Jenny Wren." Out of the MSB kids, Phoebe does it the most often.
She never leaves home without her purple backpack or her pink tennis shoes.
In her backpack: acorns, a pocket bird guide, Fig Newtons, a notebook & pencil, extra hair ties, a water bottle, a guide to mammals, and a raccoon plushie.
Biracial (need more HCs on that)
Has two siblings, one older and one younger. I have not thought of names or personalities for said siblings.
Keeps button quails as pets. For the non-bird-experts reading this, button quails are not actually quail. They are in the order Charadriiformes, making them shorebirds.
Tumblr media
Gavin:
The oldest of the Frogwater Pond Gang.
Full name: Gavin Johnson
Favorite animal: Largemouth Bass
"Average fourth/fifth grader knows at least 10 species of fish and their biology" factoid is actually a statistical error. Fishes Gavin, who spends all his summer free time fishing, reading about fish, or visiting the aquarium, is an outlier and should not have been counted.
Proud owner of two fishing trophies. The first one is the third-place trophy he won in the contest prior to "Bass Class." And the second is obviously the one he got in the actual episode.
He gets along really well with his little brother Ronan, and his cousins Aidan and Nolan. In fact, you'd think he has three younger brothers instead of just one!
As seen in the "Animals Who Live to Be 100 Years Old" episode, his weapon of choice is a broomstick.
Ronan:
Three years younger than Gavin, and two years younger than Jenny.
Full name: Ronan Johnson
Favorite animal: Wild Turkey (but blue jays are a close second)
Likes playing soccer, hockey, and other field sports.
Most likely to find a weird bug or critter and bring it home. It happened with the milk snake AND the praying mantis egg case.
For the purposes of this AU, Gavin and Ronan's last name is "Johnson" and so are their cousin's last names.
Favorite book series is The Lord of the Rings, which his parents read to him and his brother.
Named his pet hognose snake "Tolkien." Which led to this exchange over email one time.
"Tolkien is having his first ever egg. It's. Not going well."
"TOLKIEN IS A SNAKE. HE'S MY SNAKE. MY PET SNAKE. HE IS EATING AN EGG. AUTHOR JOLKIEN ROLKIEN ROLKIEN TOLKIEN IS NOT BIRTHING AN EGG."
(Gavin told him that J.R.R. Tolkien's full name was "Jolkien Rolkien Rolkien Tolkien" and Ronan believed it for an embarrassingly long time.)
Katie:
About the same age as Jenny.
Full name: Katherine Akiyama
Favorite animal: Pileated Woodpecker
Loves being out in the snow. (Favorite activity: sledding!)
She's the one who had the idea to build a tree house in the backwoods.
Enjoys drawing and writing.
I headcannon her as Japanese-American, but I don't know what else to do with that hc.
She speaks a little bit of Japanese, but not much.
Her other favorite animal is the snowshoe hare.
The name "Frogwater Pond Gang" for her friend group was also her idea. (All the friend groups in her favorite books had cool names, so her ACTUAL group of friends needed one, too.)
100 percent a daddy's girl.
Aidan
The third oldest of the gang (After Gavin and Jenny, in that order).
Full name: Aidan Johnson
Favorite animal: American Beaver
Co-founder of the "Creature Club" alongside Katie. (They meet in the tree house that Katie's dad built.)
He and his family moved to the Frogwater Pond area a few years before his little brother Nolan was born. (And a few years before the pond even existed!)
Has a pet hamster. (This is actually canon, but I don't remember if the hamster canonically has a name.)
Nolan
The youngest of the gang. (Five years younger than Aidan)
Full name: Nolan Johnson
Favorite animal: Box Turtle
Very energetic, always ready to go on an adventure.
Often imitates his big brother and older cousins.
Other notes:
Jenny, Katie, and Aidan are about the same age as Mikey (Carlos's younger brother) and Evan (DA's younger sister) in this AU. It's an interesting dynamic, since you have:
Eldest sibling (Aidan)
Middle children (Mikey and Jenny)
Youngest sibling (Evan)
Only child (Katie)
In addition to Tolkien the snake, Gavin and Ronan also have a pet cat named Lightfoot. She's a tortoiseshell with white paws, like socks.
The first MSB kids that the Frogwater Pond Gang met were Phoebe and Ralphie, who come to their neck of the woods almost every summer.
More on the cats:
Lightfoot (named after Gordon Lightfoot) is one of Brandy's kittens. The others are Joxter (currently living with the Terese-Tennelli family), Cleo (currently living with Katie), and Scotty (currently living with Uncle Brian).
Backstories for the other cat's names: Brandy is named after the song "Brandy, You're a Fine Girl," Joxter is named after the character in the Moomins series, Scotty is named after the Star Trek character, and Cleo got her name from a song that Katie's dad used to sing to her.

What I like about you: your mind and how cute you are (based on what you like and reblog)
About my pet: his name was Gaahl, he was a black hamster named after the former frontman of Norwegian black metal band Gorgoroth. He was my little companion and we were like a pirate and his parrot because I would put him on my shoulder when I would walk around the house. I taught him tricks and to answer when he is called. He loved to eat and the thing he loved the most was to sleep in the nook of my neck while I read a book or took a nap. I feel like he was the definition of my spirit animal. It is truly a fact that pets are like their owners.
Question for you: What is the one thing about you that nobody knows or you haven't told anyone?
Ps. This time is anonymous but I think you know who this is hahaha. ^^
Thank you so much! I really appreciate this! I don’t think anyone has ever said they like my mind so this is quite the compliment (and also fascinating to me)! ૮ ˶ᵔ ᵕ ᵔ˶ ა ♡
You should make a little picture book story about your hamster! I’m actually sobbing right now. It’s so wholesome and my heart feels so filled with love! (˚ ˃̣̣̥⌓˂̣̣̥ )づ♡ I’m sure Gaahl will always be with you no matter how old you are and no matter where you are in your life! As you said, just like a spirit animal trying to help guide you to the right path -`♡´- And I totally agree that pets are like their owners! I always love seeing people’s pets. When I do, I’m mentally connecting all the dots between pet and person. Most of the time I’m like “yes, I see I see. You two match very well” ♡( ˃̶᷇ ‧̫ ˂̶᷆ )♡ Also side note: I gave myself a shock when I switched from my lofi-nighttime music at full volume to listening to a song by Gorgoroth (all at 3am) haha. I gave myself a mini heart attack! Every once in awhile I’ll listen to metal so this will definitely be on my list! ⋆🎧✮⋆
Also, if I told you one thing no one knows about me then I guess it would defeat the point of no one knowing right? (⁎˃ᆺ˂) Just kidding haha. I guess one thing is I’m actually a pretty anxious person. I have no idea what my future looks like and honestly I’m not sure what to do. Although the thing that bothers me the most is I don’t want to disappoint the people around me. It’s easy to say who cares what people think but it’s always easier said than done right? I’m pretty good at keeping these worries internal because I don’t want it to cause problems but it can get difficult (and a little lonely haha). Sometimes I find myself checking in with others and give them advice/words of encouragement because making someone else even a little happy makes me happy too. For now, all I can do is keep my head up, check in on myself, and keep pushing forward. ♡(.◜ω◝.)♡
Anyway, thanks so much for this Anon! It made my day and honestly made me feel a lot better too! (And I think I do know who this is haha! So sweet! (∩˃o˂∩)♡) I hope you’re doing well and having a great day/night! Please stay well and take care! ♡(.◜ω◝.)♡

What are some good dog breeds for inexperienced, first time owners?
Labradors, Golden Retrievers, and Beagles are all good breeds for first time owners. They are generally friendly, loyal, and easy to train.
Additionally, they can adapt to different living environments and have relatively low grooming needs. All of these factors make them great choices for inexperienced owners.
Regards,
Promin.

Steam Powered: Little Hamster, Big Adventure
Tumblr media
I've had my eyes on this game when I heard about it back in around June (it came out in March this year), but I couldn't buy it because I didn't have a computer that ran windows.
But that changed recently and I finally remembered to snag this little game.
PomPom - The Great Space Rescue is a cute little puzzle platformer. It looks kind of like a Mario Game with the Kirby Aesthetic.
Tumblr media
The story is pretty simple. PomPom is just running on his little hamster wheel when his owner, Hoshi, comes home with jewels that just fell from the sky! How lucky!
Tumblr media
Except not! He's not lucky at all! Because a crew of Space Pirate Cats want those jewels and kidnap Hoshi! PomPom, his lovable hamster, is the only one who can save the day!
Like Mario & Kirby, your objective is to guide PomPom from right to left and reach the end of the stage. But that is where the similarities abruptly end.
Tumblr media
PomPom will automatically move from left to right and jump whenever he's at a ledge. Even if there's nothing under him.
Instead of playing as PomPom himself, you control a cursor. PomPom will collect random objects on his path; from gurders to walk under to springs to bounce off of, balloons to ride on, hammers to break platforms, and more! Your job is to stop time, place down platforms for PomPom to platform on, and help him reach the end of the stage without this little hamster getting himself killed.
This game, I don't think, requires cat-like reflexes. I don't know if it's my fat fingers or my greasy hands, but I find it a little difficult to pause the game (spacebar) and set down an object (left mouse click) at the same time. I don't know if I just need to deep clean my laptop or if this game is better with a proper mouse and not a trackpad. (NOTE: You don't NEED to stop time to set platforms down, it just makes it easier.)
My only tip, and it's not really a good one, is that you should save your platform and not use them until you know exactly where Pompom is going. Otherwise, you're either gonna waste something or trap yourself.
Thankfully the game is pretty forgiving. Instead of lives, it gives you second chances for when Pompom dies; you get a nice bubble that gives you a few seconds to place Pompom where you want on the screen. Sometimes, it can feel a little pointless, like you're in a bad position and you can't continue one way or the other. But other times, this can get you out of a really tight spot and give you that one pickup you REALLY needed to make it to the next checkpoint.
At the time of writing, I only beat the first world's levels. But I'm already hungry for more and I want other people to love this little game! If I beat this game, I'll give it a proper score. But from what I played, I think the game's a solid A+!

Decades of selective and carefully planned out breedings have yielded the pinnacle of hamsterdom. #Breton is a shining example as you can see 🙈😂 such majesty. Much regal. Very wow. But truly, some of my lines are likely older than I am! SBH has been around since September 2014 making this our 8th year anniversary. Our lines coming from Starbuck go back to River Road, and the 90s. Our other long lived lines go back to Tristar and many other European and UK breeders. I expect some of these lineages have been around for many many years! It's kinda crazy to think. Even thinking back on the humble beginnings of my lines, I can see how my selection process and criteria have changed and evolved the hamsters I've been working with. While some is sheer dumb luck, a lot is meticulous planning and tracking. From type improvements, to temperament, to even longevity... Did you know that back in 2014 we were seeing longevities around 18mo-24mo? Females especially were shorter lived, it wasn't until a late 2017 until we had a female from our lines reach 2yrs. Now I regularly see our hamsters live 2yrs+. While not always, it is fairly typical for my girls to get to 20-30mo and my males 24-34mo. That is honestly the improvement I am most proud of. Rodent mills have done a number on these amazing animals, but with good, reputable breeders that work towards better health and longevity we can begin to fix these mistakes. Our hamsters deserve that much. Of course flukes happen. Even from an ethical breeder, hamsters still die young and suddenly (even mine!). However we carefully track all this information. It guides our breeding choices long term. We can provide support to owners as well. Sometimes it feels like it's one step forward two steps back. But then I remember this and it makes me smile. I've seen the difference, I've seen the change. I hope you do too. 💗 https://www.instagram.com/p/CfHVSHQg_24/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Discovering the Delight of Lettuce for Your Hamster: A Comprehensive Guide for Pet Owners
Let's Dive into the World of Lettuce and Hamsters!
Lettuce, with its crisp and refreshing taste, is a staple in many human diets. But can hamsters eat lettuce? The answer is yes, with a few considerations. In this ultimate guide, we'll explore the various aspects of including lettuce in your hamster's snacking routine.
Tumblr media
Understanding Lettuce Nutrition for Hamsters
Lettuce Overview: Lettuce is not just a leafy green; it's a nutrient-packed delight for your hamster. Rich in water, fiber, and essential vitamins like K, folate, and potassium, it offers a healthy addition to their diet. However, not all lettuce varieties are created equal. Romaine, green leaf, red leaf, and spring mix stand out for their superior nutritional value, while iceberg lettuce falls short due to its high water content.
Can Hamsters Eat Lettuce? The Answer is Yes, but with Nuances!
Choosing the Right Lettuce: Can hamsters eat lettuce? Absolutely! Opt for romaine, green leaf, red leaf, or spring mix for a dose of vitamins A, C, and K without excess water or risk. However, iceberg lettuce is a no-go due to its minimal nutritional benefits. Moderation is key – limit portions to 1-2 small leaves 2-3 times per week to keep your hamster's diet well-balanced.
Lettuce Benefits for Hamsters: The advantages of incorporating lettuce into your hamster's diet are noteworthy. From vitamin A for immune health to vitamin K supporting blood clotting, folate for cell growth, potassium for muscles and nerves, and the fiber aiding digestion, lettuce brings a bouquet of benefits.
Navigating Risks and Challenges
Lettuce Risks: While the benefits are clear, it's crucial to be aware of potential risks. Iceberg lettuce, with its high water content and minimal nutrients, can lead to diarrhea. Excessive lettuce consumption, regardless of the type, may result in loose stools and nutritional imbalances. Washing lettuce thoroughly is essential to remove pesticide residues and potential bacteria.
Symptoms of Lettuce Poisoning: Can hamster eat lettuce without risks? Keep an eye out for symptoms like diarrhea, lack of appetite, weight loss, lethargy, dehydration, muscle tremors, convulsions, and, in extreme cases, coma or death. The presence of E. coli, Salmonella, pesticides, or oxalates could be potential culprits.
Perfect Portions: How Much Lettuce is Just Right?
Portion Control: Can hamster eat lettuce in unlimited amounts? Not quite. Offer a measured portion of 1-2 small leaves 2-3 times per week. For different hamster breeds, tailor the quantity accordingly to avoid potential digestive issues. Remember, too much of a good thing can lead to diarrhea.
Syrian, Roborovski, Russian Dwarf, or Chinese Dwarf: Adjust the portion size based on your hamster's breed. For example, Syrian hamsters can enjoy 2 small leaves twice a week, while Russian Dwarf hamsters might do well with 1 small leaf torn into pieces 2-3 times a week.
Exploring Alternatives and Supplements
Variety is the Spice: Can hamster eat lettuce exclusively? While lettuce is a delightful addition, offer variety with alternatives like bok choy for calcium, carrot tops for vitamin A, arugula for vitamin K, cucumber for hydration, endive for fiber, bell pepper for vitamin C, and high-quality hamster foods like Oxbow Essentials and Supreme Petfoods Science Selective.
In Conclusion: A Leafy Adventure Awaits Your Hamster!
Embrace the Lettuce Experience: Can hamster eat lettuce? Absolutely, and with the right knowledge, it can be a joyful part of their diet. Just remember the key points – choose the right lettuce, control portions, watch for symptoms, and introduce variety for a well-rounded diet. Your hamster will thank you with happy squeaks and a healthy demeanor. Enjoy the journey of sharing wholesome lettuce snacks with your adorable furry friend!

Honestly, as a pet owner and someone who works with animals, it makes me sick to see "jokes" about how peoples hamsters have died traumatic deaths. Even laughing about it and how they were trusted with a hamster by their parents at 8yo and how it died because yous played with it like a toy. Like wowowow an animal died a traumatic death because of yours/your parents negligence and abuse soooo funny.
Like if it isn't bad enough that the poor things have been abused and neglected, you then joke about it?? The lack of empathy towards small animals is not just disgusting, but it also scares me how people can so easily remove cognitive abilities from small animals, disregarding their intelligence and feelings. Yes, their intelligence, thoughts, and feelings are not comparable to that of a human but just because they are not the same, nor express their negative or positive emotions (such as their distress, contentment, anxiety etc.) the same as we do, people really equate them with being basically nothing, an accessory.
I can understand a child not intending to hurt a rodent yet doing so because their parents got them one as a pet and give the child sole responsibility, or even if the parents take responsibility they do not properly care for it and the child unintentionally harms it, but it becomes an even bigger issue when these people later laugh about their childhood pets death and don't consider it as an actual animal.
It (somehow) gets worse when people try justify it with the fact that it's "just a hamster" or "just a rodent" like yeah?? But don't they deserve to live a happy life free from abuse and neglect?? Like why do yous think it's normal to bring harm to an animal, intentional or not, just because it's a small animal. I know that most of yous wouldn't accept that treatment if it was a cat or a dog so why is it so normalised for rodents?
I would have thought that it was just in online spaces that I see their behaviour so normalised, but I have heard people in real life talking about these things. It's horrendous to hear about - especially when you work with animals like this, understanding their behaviours, how loveable and how much personality they actually have (surprise surprise!! Rodents aren't just empty vessels that do stuff, they are indeed very different and some are so sweet and even if they aren't sweet they are still deserving of proper treatment, care, and love). I know it's not just rodents (even though I see the most about hamsters) as I know fish -especially the likes of goldfish- or trendy animals like axolotls, beta fish, or even certain trendy breeds of dog/cat are all bought without the owner doing any research at all into it's needs and thinking it will be an easy pet. Animals have individual needs like us humans like it's astonishing how little compassion people offer these animals. It's nauseating.
As a pet owner, I do believe it is not that difficult to do research using trustworthy sources and it is actually necessary if you are considering an animal, even if it's something considered simple like a certain breed of dog. You can ask independent pet stores, shelters, look for online guides, blogs, breeders, vets, and many more. In fact, shelters (or places in which people work with animals) can be amazing to learn more about an animals behaviours, needs, and minimum requirements for space and such. If you cannot be bothered to do research or don't know how to care for an animal then simply do not get one. It is as simple as acknowledging that you would be unable to take care of one and so deciding against it - just as I decided against getting guinea pigs as I'm aware I could not take care of them due not having the money, struggling to even meet my own needs and do my own simple tasks (cleaning room and such) due to my ASD, and so could not meet their needs as they need it.
I'm not going to pretend like I'm a professional who knows everything about every animal just because I work with some and own some, but if I was to ever consider getting a new animal the first thing to do is research. I'm also not going to pretend like I'm perfect, I've messed up with my animals before (such as when I panicked about my cat trying to eat my mums plant and raised my voice in panic because I know it's toxic to cats if they eat it) but those have been mistakes where I've often been feeling a heightened emotion (and learnt from), rather than flat out negligence and abuse. You can do better and you can be a better human being and owner to your companion but atp I'm convinced that some of you just don't want to acknowledge it because it would mean you admitting your wrongdoings to yourself.

The Nutritional Needs of Hamsters: A Comprehensive Guide
Tumblr media
Hamsters are popular pets known for their cute appearance and playful nature. As small mammals, they have specific dietary needs that are crucial for their health and well-being. Understanding what foods are safe and beneficial for them, and what should be avoided, is essential for any hamster owner. This article aims to provide a comprehensive guide on the nutritional needs of hamsters, presented in a professional, engaging, and easy-to-understand manner.
Understanding Hamster Diet Basics
The Importance of a Balanced Diet
Hamsters are omnivores, which means they require a mix of plant-based and animal-based foods. A balanced diet for a hamster includes a variety of grains, vegetables, fruits, and proteins. This diversity ensures that they receive all the necessary nutrients, such as carbohydrates for energy, proteins for muscle growth, fats for energy storage, and vitamins and minerals for overall health.
Essential Nutrients for Hamsters
1. Proteins: Vital for growth and repair of tissues.
2. Carbohydrates: Provide energy.
3. Fats: Essential fatty acids are needed in small amounts.
4. Vitamins and Minerals: Crucial for various body functions.
Safe and Beneficial Foods for Hamsters
Tumblr media
Commercial Hamster Foods
Commercial hamster food mixes are a convenient way to provide a balanced diet. These usually contain a blend of seeds, grains, pellets, and dried vegetables. It's important to choose a high-quality mix that doesn't contain excessive fillers or sugary treats.
Vegetables and Fruits
Fresh vegetables and fruits are excellent for providing vitamins and minerals. Safe options include broccoli, carrots, apples, and pears. These should be given in moderation to prevent digestive issues and obesity.
A common question among hamster owners is, "Is avocado good for hamsters?" The answer is no. Avocado is high in fat and contains substances that can be harmful to hamsters.
Protein Sources
Hamsters benefit from occasional protein treats. Cooked chicken, boiled eggs, and mealworms are excellent protein sources. These should be given sparingly as too much protein can lead to health problems.
Grains and Seeds
Whole grains, such as brown rice and barley, are good sources of carbohydrates. Seeds, like pumpkin and sunflower seeds, can be offered as treats but should be limited due to their high-fat content.
Foods to Avoid
Tumblr media
Toxic Foods
Some foods are toxic to hamsters and should always be avoided. These include chocolate, caffeine, onion, garlic, and any citrus fruits. Additionally, any processed human food or sugary treats are harmful.
High Sugar and Fat Foods
Avoid giving your hamster foods that are high in sugar and fat. These can lead to obesity and related health issues like diabetes.
Feeding Guidelines and Practices
Portion Control
Hamsters are prone to obesity, so it's essential to control their portions. A general guideline is to provide a tablespoon of commercial food per hamster per day, supplemented with small amounts of fruits, vegetables, and proteins.
Regular Feeding Schedule
Maintaining a regular feeding schedule helps regulate your hamster's digestive system. Feeding them at the same time each day is advisable.
Clean and Fresh Water
Always ensure your hamster has access to clean and fresh water. A water bottle with a sipper tube is the best way to provide water, as it stays cleaner than a water bowl.
Conclusion
A well-balanced diet is key to ensuring the health and happiness of your hamster. By understanding and meeting their nutritional needs, you provide them with a foundation for a long and healthy life. Always consult with a veterinarian for specific dietary advice and if you notice any health issues in your pet hamster. Remember, a happy hamster is a healthy hamster!
