A matchup between an elephant and a rhinoceros would be quite the spectacle! Both are massive animals with unique features and strengths.

In terms of sheer size, African elephants are the largest land animals, weighing several tons and standing up to 13 feet tall at the shoulder. Rhinoceroses, on the other hand, are smaller but still formidable, with the largest species, the white rhinoceros, weighing around 2.2 to 3.6 tons.

In a confrontation, the outcome would likely depend on various factors such as the species of elephant (African vs. Asian), the species of rhinoceros (white, black, Indian, etc.), the individuals involved, and the circumstances of the encounter.

It's October 22nd, 🐨 International Wombat Day! The traditions surrounding today's event have expanded from simply celebrating these cute little creatures to eating lots of chocolate and wine gums (known in some parts of the world as gummy bears or Swedish fish).

Wombats are furry, stocky, short-legged, herbivorous marsupials, native to open grasslands and eucalyptus forests in Australia and Tasmania. They like to keep to themselves, living solitary lives in underground burrows during the day and coming out at night to forage on grasses, roots, and bark.

Space for wombats is at a premium as farm and ranch lands increasingly encroach upon their natural habitats. The damage to crop fields and pastures caused by wombats' burrowing can be a big nuisance. They've been hunted as vermin for this reason, as well as for their fur and simply for sport. They're easy targets because, like their cousins, the koala, they’re very cumbersome and move very slowly. My parents took us to all kinds of natural wonders when we were kids. One park, Callaway Gardens, was a frequent stop in my Georgia childhood. They had magnolia trees to scale, squirrels to chase, a lake to swim in, and--best of all--a giant butterfly garden. A huge glass room filled to the brim with monarch butterflies, eating sweet bananas and fluttering overhead like magic. I have patchy memories of interpretive signage and guides telling us about these sharply bedecked orange-and-black creatures: I learned about aposematic signaling from their bright colors, as well as Batesian mimicry--they tasted so bad to birds, that other butterflies mimicked them in appearance to gain the defense. Once when one landed on my hand to "lick" off some errant soda I'd spilled earlier, it was like a kiss from a wild thing--and I resolved to repeat the spill whenever I came back.⠀ ⠀ Their erratic orange magic continued outside the glass building--at home, at school, wandering through meadows at church, fluttering through my mother's garden. Monarchs, everywhere, all over the place, common as clouds. They were a constant presence in my Southern childhood. ⠀ ⠀ When I see one now, it is with the nostalgic delight of meeting an old friend--tempered by a sorrow I can't quite put into words. According to the Center for Biological Diversity, monarchs have declined in my part of the world by more than 80% in the last two decades. This tracks with my anecdotal observations of seeing them less and less often over the years, even though I spend much of my time outside--alignment between the big and small pictures. Thrilled to announce the description of one of the largest #frogs in #Madagascar, Mantidactylus radaka! It took a lot of sleuthing, including sequencing 120-year-old specimens, to be able to confidently describe this #newspecies! Its description was important, however, because these are among the frogs that are eaten by people in Madagascar, and they may be at risk of local over-harvesting, in additional to ongoing #deforestation and #habitatloss. Good Evening folks! March's Creature of the Month is the Sumatran Orangutan The word Orangutan originates from Malaysia and translates in Malayan to 'person of the forest'. These extremely intelligent, sentient beings are critically endangered. The orangutan (along with many other endangered creatures) is struggling to survive in the diminishing rainforest of Sumatra and Borneo. There are many factors that are impacting the orangutan population, many of them are a direct result and effect of the unregulated and uncertified palm oil industry. Habitat loss due to deforestation for oil palm plantations, illegal poaching and pet trade along with low reproduction rates are working against these creatures chance of survival. Along with these issues, corruption, cruelty and human destruction, are further leading the Sumatran orangutan to the cusp of extinction. It is crucial that we act now, not only to save the rainforest and its diversity, but to save this amazingly intelligent, social creature from extinction. The primary habitat of this species, the Knysna estuary, is among the most heavily used water bodies of South Africa. Human settlements and associated industrial, domestic and recreational activities are increasing around all estuaries where the species has been recorded. The area is under threat from urban expansion and land-use changes in the catchment; stormwater runoff has increased in volume, and peak flows carry suspended sediment into the estuary (strong currents sweep animals and plants out into the sea and silt depositions result in the clogging of gills); rising population and developments to provide piped water threatens freshwater inflow and waste water disposal brings in chemical and biological pollutants. Development surrounding the estuary is known to deposit trace metals, hydrocarbons, pesticides and organic wastes into the estuary. Within the estuary, the cumulative impact of boats may significantly affect the seagrass habitats of this species. BORNEAN FIREBACK PHEASANT Lophura ignita ©Laura Quick The Bornean crested fireback is a medium-sized, up to 70 cm long, forest pheasant with a peacock-like dark crest, bluish black plumage, reddish brown rump, black outer tail feathers, red iris and bare blue facial skin. The female is a brown bird with short crest, blue facial skin and spotted black-and-white below. The crested fireback is found in lowland forests of the Thai-Malay Peninsula, Borneo and Sumatra. Their diet consists mainly of plants, fruits and small animals. The female usually lays between four and eight creamy white eggs. It's October 1st, 🦝 International Raccoon Appreciation Day. This event was created to encourage us to learn more about raccoons and show our appreciation by protecting their habitats.

Raccoons are nocturnal animals, native to North America and northern South America. In the wild, raccoons have a life expectancy of about 2 to 3 years, but in captivity, they can live up to 20 years. These cute little mammals are omnivores like us who eat a variety of foods – fruits, nuts, berries, insects, rodents, frogs, crayfish, and eggs, while keeping an eye out for predators like cougars, bobcats, coyotes, foxes, and owls.

Despite their appeal, though, some people look upon raccoons as vermin. They can be pesky critters – turning over trash cans, tearing up gardens, stealing eggs from chicken coops, etc. They can also carry diseases like rabies and roundworm.

Most people love raccoons anyway, though – especially the unique way they use their paws to "wash" their food. They also use their little hands to open latches and remove lids from containers. They can rotate their rear paws 180 agrees, which allows them to climb down trees headfirst. Raccoons are incredibly smart, too. At one time, they were used instead of lab rats, but the strong-willed raccoons kept outsmarting the scientists. Because of their high intelligence and cuteness, some people keep raccoons as pets. This vibrantly colored Queen Angel is one of the many examples of how beautiful the creatures are! As I look closely at her, I'm humbled blessed and inspired to fight relentlessly to save all our planets wildlife and habitats! Unfortunately for me it is this same long period of time observing the underwater and terrestrial wildlife that brings insurmountable sadness as my early baseline made me watch entire large populations of sharks and other species disappear because of my species! Most of our species is driven to success, thinking that financial freedom is what success it! Very few think like I do! True success is happiness! For me this comes when your mind, your heart, your actions and your drive are all in alignment doing great things for all fellow earthlings, humans and all wildlife! Many of you are pleading with me for solutions on how to help our Amazon and our Planet! Here it is! Right now with the immense destruction of our amazon mostly for the Agricultural Animal industry, clearly the very best thing you can do is to lesson the amount of animals you eat, consider going vegetarian or better than that, become vegan like me!
