OCTOBER 26, 2021
Inktober Day 24 - Extinct These happy little chaps are my favourite animal! Sadly they're critically endangered and it's estimated that there's less than 1000 of these real life Mudkips left in the wild.

I was so fortunate back in 2004 to see Andalas, the Sumatran Rhino (Dicerorhinus sumatrensis), at the Los Angeles Zoo. This species is no longer present in the USA and is on the brink of extinction in its native habitat. #sumatranrhino #andalas #losangeleszoo #criticallyendangered #endangeredspecies #zoos #zoophotography https://www.instagram.com/p/CpYlG9LPbKI/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

How are humans helping animals in need? National Wildlife Day
How are humans helping animals in need? National Wildlife Day
National Wildlife Day on September 4 brings an awareness of the plight of animals around the globe, whether in your own backyard or one you might see in a zoo or aquarium. Animals may need help for a variety of reasons, some of which are caused by humans and others not. Development causes habitat loss and/or fragmentation. Pollution may not only affect what animals eat and drink but some trash…

Cloud forest is one of our planet's most precious biomes, meeting very strict criteria. They represent high altitude rainforests in tropical zones, accounting for a fraction of the already severely diminished global rainforest coverage. Permanently wet, they receive both vertical and horizontal rainfall in the form of near-continuous cloud presence. Typically located on isolated volcanic peaks, cloud forests contain by far the largest and most varied biodiversity of all land areas, in particular for insect and birdlife. Cloud forest is severely threatened by climate change and we expect to lose a majority of these unique areas in the coming decades. Costa Rica is home to a handful of such areas, precious few other countries have retained theirs. @cloudforest_panama @visit_costarica @climatereality @unclimatechange #cloudforest #forest #jungle #rainforestanimals #wildlife #wild #nature #wet #raining #rain #cloud #costarica #CR #puravida #centroamerica #centralamerica #endangered #criticallyendangered #savetherainforest #climateemergency #green #chrismilliganphoto https://www.instagram.com/p/CesElR9L7w6/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

The Chinese Pangolin (or Manis pentadactyla, named after the five claws on their front feet) originates from Asia (India, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Southern Chine, Hainan, and Taiwan).
They are classed as Critically Endangered due to being hunted for illegal trafficking. It is highly desired species in traditional medicine and hunted primarily for their scales despite zero evidence that it is actually medicinally beneficial. Despite preventive measures such as laws, education, rescue, and rehabilitation, as well as ranger training, until the demand for their use traditional medicine decreases, the population will continue to go down in numbers, perhaps even to the point of extinction in the wild.
Chinese Pangolins are nocturnal in nature, sleeping in burrows during the day and hunting for ants, termites, and other insects by night with their 40cm long tongues.
Even though the pangolins are promiscuous in their mating habits, they are difficult to reproduce in captive settings, adding to the problems regarding population numbers.
Chinese Pangolins are odd creatures in several ways. First: they are the only mammal with scales (which sadly makes them the most trafficked animal in the world). Second: newborn pangolins will have soft scales during the first three days of their lives, only then their scales will harden.
Fun fact: pangolins don't have teeth. Instead they eat small stones that will sit in their stomach to grind down food.

Rüppell’s vulture, critically endangered, Simien Mountains national park, Ethiopia. Marco Gaiotti says: ‘This vulture is pictured in flight in front of the Jinbar waterfall. The current Rüppell’s population of 22,000 is decreasing, mainly due to loss of habitat. Rüppell’s vultures are considered to be the highest-flying bird, with confirmed evidence of a flight at 11,300m (37,000ft) above sea level. I have just returned from the Upper Warren, again helping Parks and Wildlife. This time trapping Brush-tailed Bettongs (Woylies) for translocation to the 420-hectare predator-free area of prime habitat in the Perup Sanctuary in order to replenish the Sanctuary population after recent successful re-introductions from Perup to mainland New South Wales and South Australia, areas from which Woylies had totally disappeared more than a century ago.
The Woylie is listed as critically endangered and it has been incredible to see how the local population has thrived under the watch of Parks and Wildlife. Other species trapped on this occasion included Chuditch (Western Quoll), Brush-tailed Possums and Quenda (Western Bandicoot/ Isoodon fusciventer). The photos are of a Quenda with 2 pouch young, a Quenda Joey, a tiny Woylie Joey and the earlier video of a Woylie being released in Perup (the little bald patch is from temporary fur loss in the trap/cage).
I especially want to pay tribute to an icon, Julia Wayne, Fauna Conservation Officer of Parks and Wildlife, who in her quiet, modest and totally dedicated way has been the Joan of Arc for over two decades for endangered marsupial protection in the Upper Warren.
