Velvette is also very Anne Boelyne(like from SIX not from Real Life) coded it's wild. Her part in that song with Carmila was giving so much Don't Lose Your Head

Okay but me and my brother are working on a Hazbin Hotel swap AU where we swap the main cast with the overlords and in that AU we swapped Husk and Vox. The Husk used to be an overlord reveal is gonna make that AU soooooo much easier lmao

ADAM IS REALLY GOOD I promised I would stop comparing to other characters but he was giving SO MUCH Hades from Disney's Hercules like its insane

I think we should let Alex Brightman sing rocj and roll more often that song was such a fucking BANGER

SPEAKING OF THE SONGS- oh my god I love the soundtrack so fucking much-

Stayed Gone was a lil less hype then I was expecting but thats okay cuz it was still a banger and I loved the visuals

That song battle between Carmilla and Velvette????? Oh my god??????

Carmilla and Vaggie's song was also amazing but I think I know why they didn't have Stephanie Beatriz sing her own song in Elena of Avalor y'know, girl cannot hold a character voice while singing

LOSER WAS SO FUCKING GOOD- I love Huskerdust so much. I love Keith David so much. Blake Roman is such a phenomenal Angel Dust.

SPEAKING OF all the voice actors are amazing. Blake Roman, Brightman as Pentious and Joel Perez were the ones I was the most worried abt but I loved all their preformances so much it was fucking fantastic

Valentino can go die in a fucking hole <3

The other Vees are cool and fun to watch but I hope Valentino fucking dies

Okay to be fair he's also fun to watch when he's not in the same room as Angel Dust but tHAT DOESNT SUPERSEID MY HATRED FUCK 👏 THAT 👏 GUY 👏👏👏👏

Speaking of the Vees tho I do love their dynamic

My favorite episode was probably Radio Killed the Video Star bcuz of mY BOYS PENTIOUS AND VOX!!!!!!!!

And the most painful episode to watch was- no surprise- Masquerade

That episode was a fucking rollercoaster Jesus fucking Christ...

Those scenes with Angel and Valentino where so fucking visceral... like. Who the fuck wrote that. Who are you. Are you okay. Do you need help-

Tho I'm not sure abt how they're handling the ah- more serious bits of Angel's character. It is WAYYYYYY to early to tell and I think Loser wasn't like. Trying to downplay the situation. But the writers better have been careful moving foreward bcuz I can def see a world where Angel's arc goes very wrong very fast-

Also while we're criticizing: wasn't a fan of the pacing. Especially in episode two. Like I can look past it, but the way they breeze past some plot points kinda bugged me

Otherwise it was sooooooo fucking good man oh my god

THE HUMOR WAS SO MUCH BETTER THAN PPL MAKE IT OUT TO BEEEEEE PPL NEED TO STOP SHITTING ON THE COMEDY IN THESE SHOWS MAN-

The gag where Niffty just fucking stopped thinking every time the camera turned on was so fucking good

Niffty in general was really fuckin funny

Alastor was a lot less prominent of a character then I thought he would be but tbh I think that's for the best. He's like Discord from My Little Pony, fun in small doses but if you don't set perameters for how often he appears and when he's willing to help it kinda breaks the show

Chaggie is adorable and I love them <3

I think this show does a really good job balancing the focus on the whole cast! These first 4 episodes seem to be pretty Charlie, Angel and kind of Vaggie heavy but everybody still gets their fair share of attention!

This is longer than what the Earthrealm guys typically get. Usually they all get around 200 words because writing for them takes longer because it’s 5, but this was so cute I got carried away and they all got around 400-500 words😀

Johnny Cage

A mini Cage? Are you serious?

Can I be honest with y'all? I think this kid would be an accident

Because of that he'd be nervous. Johnny has a huge ego but he also has huge debt and a dwindling career so he'd be worried about how he'd even take care of this child

He'd work extremely hard to get more money. He'd even sell his house to get a smaller one that's more affordable (that's how you know he's serious)

He covers his nervousness with humor. This is a whole human he's gonna be raising now

The closer the delivery date gets, the more nervous he gets. His partner moves a little weird and he's “IT'S COMING!”

Calm down Johnny. Damn.

The entire delivery he's jumpy as fuck. He didn't realize how long it'd take and his nerves are through the roof

Does Johnny have a huge ego? Yes. Is he an asshole? Yes. Does he make everything a joke? Yes. But this is different. There's a human that's relying on him to survive

Everytime he looks at the baby he's like “oh shit, I got a baby”

Baby accidents actually make him cringe. His baby vomits on him and he has to physically stop himself from throwing it

Johnny as a girl dad? Omg.

That's his little princess. Any money he makes goes to her. She has so many unnecessary toys and he dresses her like an actual princess

The baby got its own room from jump

He'll never be against a tea party or a makeover

During those makeovers he's giving pointers. “Don't use that color, it'll clash with my hair” type of shit

Be prepared. No matter how hard you try, this kid is becoming a mini Johnny

He tries to be really active in her life when he's not acting

Has debated on retiring but you need money so that's not happening

You'd think he'd want his kid to become an actor but he knows that shit is not safe so absolutely not

He makes little films with her though. Really cute shit he'll rewatch when she's older

Time to him goes by so fast. He feels like he blinked and suddenly she was 18

He's the dad that gets emotional at her graduation. Straight sobbing as she walks the stage

“I'm a cool dad” *puts on shades*

His ability to not take shit serious doesn’t entirely disappear. He’s the parent the child wants the principal to call when in trouble

Little fashion shows? Absolutely

His kid is so spoiled, it's ridiculous. Even if he didn't want a child, he loves them with every part of him

Another accident baby-

He's trying to fix this whole clan situation so a baby is not something he was thinking of

So when he's told he's gonna have a baby his heart stops for a quick second

Being terrified is a normal reaction and trust me, he's terrified

He doesn't know how to be a dad at all and videos aren't helping

I know I mention this whole on the run from the Yakuza thing a lot but that's a big ass problem. How do you have a baby when mfs are gunning for you?

Why does he agree to keep it? I ain't think that far but anywho, it's too late now. Too far along-

He tries to prepare himself by looking up videos and reading books. He wants to be an amazing dad for his baby

We don't know how his parents were but I'm assuming his childhood wasn't the best

He promised himself that he's gonna care for this baby and give it a fantastic childhood

Idk how his vision works now tbh. I'm assuming he can always see so I'm guessing that's not a problem

Once the baby is here he's all over it. You'd think he gave birth with how much he's playing with it

I wanna make all of them girl dads tbh and I'm the one writing this soooooo that's what imma do-

Kenshi is making sure everyone is comfortable. His partner and the baby. He's gonna help anyway he can

Having a tiny human depend on him is definitely a wild concept to him

He wants to teach his daughter how to fight but he doesn't want to make her a monster if that makes sense

He wants to make sure she never uses her skills to harm others for no reason and because of that, any school reports about violence is taken seriously

Let that school call him and he's asking 20 questions tryna see who the aggressor was. If his daughter was being harassed and she defended herself then as long as someone wasn't seriously hurt then it's ok. If his daughter was the aggressor? Oh nah

Kenshi is not afraid to lecture and discipline (I don't mean whooping. Whether or not you think any of them would is up to you. I'm not getting into that. Be free) his daughter

His kid is never walking all over him. He don't let them slide with shit

He's harsh but it's in a loving way. He's not on her ass for no reason. He wants her to conduct herself well and to be a good person and better than the people he's been surrounded by. He carries this out by being a bit more harsh and strict than he needs to be

That teenage rebellion phase is gonna kick his ass. Omg

He's strict but I don't think he'd be unsafe for his daughter to go to, yk? His daughter knows she can go to him if she needs anything

If she felt like she couldn't tell him something, his poor little heart would break

I don't think he'd ever take his bandana off around them. Idk how the healing would work but I could imagine it'd still look brutal

So protective of her. Let someone move towards her a little quick, he's on his feet before he even realizes it

He doubts his parenting at time and how safe he can keep her but he's doing a really solid job

Kung Lao

Idk whether or not his baby would be an accident or not

Either way, Kung Lao has a huge ego and he'd assume it can't be that bad

He definitely can figure all this out as he goes along. It'll be easy. Nothing to worry about

He wishes he could go back in time and smack himself for being so stupid

At first it's fine, then he remembers he has to consistently deal with a baby and he's like “I may have miscalculated”

Why do babies shit so much? They're so small.

Terrible Twos have him stressed

When the baby's teething he slowly starts to lose his grasp on reality. All the yelling drives him nuts but he's locked in now

He tries to use his baby as a challenge to keep him motivated but honestly babe, you're never winning that challenge. Babies are unpredictable

He has to learn that. Babies are a learning experience and you can't try to use them as some great challenge. Just relax and take things one at a time

He also teaches his baby how to fight

Makes them a mini hat but puts something non sharp on the edges, like crayons or something

Some may think “oh a daughter! She has to be feminine and sweet and blahblahblah!”

Nah, that's now how it works with him

His daughter is learning some Leon Kennedy moves

After what he's been through he's definitely teaching them how to fight because conflict will always happen. You're never catching his daughter slipping

The dad that asks “did you win?” if his child gets in trouble for fighting at school

Let's his child watch scary movies

He's never doing that bullshit again. She was up all night and he's never regretted anything more

The type to “randomly” decide to sharpen his hat when his daughter brings a boy over

“What are you doing dad?” “I'm sharpening my sharp hat that's sharp enough to cut through humans… because it's so sharp”

Puts “The Great” in front of her name whenever describing her

His daughter probably has a huge ego also. This dude does not teach her to be humble and compliments her when she does anything

You think a mini Johnny is bad? Mini Kung Lao gives them a run for their money.

Raiden

I feel like Raiden would have kids when he's older. Idk why but I think he'd be way more careful than everyone else

So when he hears he's having a baby, he's both nervous and excited

He's on it. Decorating the nursery, reading books, looking at websites, he's on it all.

He wants to be prepared so he doesn't mess up

Messing up is inevitable but don't tell him that

Once the baby is here, he's super happy. The room is already decorated and he's so glad they can lay in there

Super affectionate towards his baby. Constantly kissing her head and playing with her

If any of the other Earthrealm men have a baby, he insists on playdates

Even if they don't, he plays with his daughter enough

The type to actually make his voice higher when playing with dolls

Gives his kid cute nicknames that they'll undoubtedly get embarrassed by when they're older

Are we surprised he also teaches his daughter to fight? No.

He was minding his business and was told he had to help protect Earthrealm. His kid gotta know how to scrap

He keeps a good balance of combat and normal childhood so it's fine

He does little lightning shows for his kid. Is it irresponsible? A little. Is Liu Kang gonna take it back though? No.

Raises a daughter similar to him; soft spoken and sweet but is willing to throw down when necessary

He's the parent that genuinely hears his kid out when they get in trouble

Since this is his first kid he's new to all of this so making mistakes is something that'll happen. Good thing about Raiden tho is that he's willing to apologize when family conflict happens

He takes so many pictures, it's ridiculous

Takes pictures the entire first week of school and is spamming Kung Lao with them

He's really invested in child drama ngl. A kid threw a book at another kid? Tell him more so he can gossip with Kung Lao

Discipline is difficult for him because he honestly doesn't know what to do. He's worried he's being too harsh and doesn't wanna push his kid away. It's common knowledge that they'll grow up, move away and he won't see her as much so he doesn't want to push them away and lose them earlier than necessary

Kids need some sort of discipline though so he gotta figure it out

When his daughter no longer needs him to check the closet for monsters, his heart might shatter a little bit ngl

He's taking it one step at a time and honestly? He's doing really good

Liu Kang

Probably didn't even know he could have kids

He just assumed a keeper of time was outta the game so wdym a baby is on the way?

Liu Kang has watched humans evolve so he's watched plenty of parents raise their babies so he has a lot of references

He's not as nervous as everyone else. Like I said before, he has plenty of references of what to and what not to do so he's pretty confident in his abilities

He's only nervous about the threats they'll face once they're alive. Man is used to fighting for his life

Decorates the nursery and child proofs the entire house

Makes sure his partner is incredibly comfortable. He wants them completely relaxed

He packs the bag for when the delivery happens, he doesn't leave the room unless necessary, he's really supportive.

Once the baby is here he's lowkey hogging the baby

Thinks his partner should be relaxing after so the baby is always in his arms

This baby to him is the most precious thing he's ever seen. Having a family is something he really wants so he's on cloud 9

Watching over his kid to see if they get any powers like him, which is likely

Liu Kang has a good balance between discipline and softness. He's not super strict but he doesn't just let them get away with anything

Imma sound like a broken record but his daughter is scraping. This is Liu Kang we're talking about

His daughter is gonna become Gamora-

Fighting skills will be impeccable. Say excuse me if you bump into her or she's going 2 back flips, lighting her body on fire and blowing the area up

He wants to spend so much time with his daughter. He knows how fast time flies. He's seen humans not appreciate each other and that's not happening with him. His daughter will know she's loved

He has references like I said earlier but that doesn't mean it's the easiest to do. He tries his hardest though and is probably the most patient

He's more excited for the firsts than they are. This is not your first day of school Liu Kang, why are you so geeked?

Tons of photos of his baby

Other dads can be really stressed when it comes to their kid growing up but I think he's more accepting of it. Is it sad seeing his baby grow up? Yes. He's used to the idea of aging though. Also his kid is immortal like him so he's comforted by the idea of them never growing older than him

Liu Kang is a parent that is 100% ok with admitting when he's wrong. There's no toxic shit with him. If he fucked up, he fucked up.

Probably has the most or one of the most humble kids

Very affectionate

Probably wants more kids

Thank you so much for tagging me before, I hope this isn't too late (?) Days are hectic for me but nonetheless, I would very much like to touch up on your tips and advice you have when writing for Luis. I loved him in the remake, and I would very much love to do him justice in some form of written work!

HIHIHI ITS NOT A PROBLEM AT ALL!!!!! And don’t worry it’s NEVER too late!!! I have stuff sitting in my inbox from like. December HCNEHNDJDJJXNS

I Must admit I’m not really an expert nor am I much of a profession fanfic writer or anything- I only do it for fun!!!! So if you want something like, more specific PLEASE pretty please feel free to ask I’d be more than happy to help!!!! But in terms of general tips and tricks??? Here’s a few that I have under the cut!!!

As weird as this is gonna sound a lot of time I’ll just go and watch Luis’ voice actor André Peña’s streams on Twitch to try and pick up on lil mannerisms or speech quirks that get shown in-game!!!! If I can find an example I’ll put it here, but just generally picking up on what Luis would theoretically sound like if he were talking in a casual conversation helps me out!!!!! (Also he’s just in general a very lovely guy and his twitch streams are always fun so I reccomended them if you’re able to catch one!!!)

On a similar note, if you’re watching any cutscenes and any small characteristic sticks out to you- use that to your advantage!!!! I’ve always noticed how he kinda smiles differently when in different situations/levels of stress/talking to different people so I use that to my advantage when writing scenes with him!!!!

OR OR EVEN, if you’re able to and have the time, go look at older livestreams where the cast talk about their roles in RE4R and see what André has to say about Luis!!!!!! I’m more than happy to link the streams once I can find them again if you want!!!!!!!!! Seeing the actors be so genuine and passionate about the characters and putting their whole selves into the role truly does make them feel just so,,,, h u m a n <<<<33

Also, I know everyone and their mother says this, but research truly does help!!!!! There’s a LOT of things people miss about his character if you only view him on a surface-level or go into his character assuming he’s just a cardboard cutout ‘bad-guy-turned-good’ Typa character, so reading analysis posts on him to get a better idea of why he does what he does and how he is as a person will really help!!!! (Obviously I’ve got my own posts under the tag #luisposting or #othersposts, but the lovely @blveherb has some amazing posts of their own I can’t recommend enough!!!!)

There’s a LOOOOOOT of just. Very incorrect misinformation out there HXNSUSJ (staring at you resident evil fan wiki. Staring at you. VERY HARD) so if you ever come across a post that seems to only lean towards a negative view of Luis as a character or never gives him the benefit of the doubt,,,, it most likely won’t have been made with good taste in mind or properly researched HCNEHENDUDJ

Also also also, looking for things that he was directly inspired by!!!!!! I C A N N O T make this post without mentioning the 1957 Don Quixote film- it’s free on YouTube and it is SOOOOOO SOSOSOSOSOSOSO GOOD!!!!! Capcom TRULY put their all into the Don Quixote symbolism in his character and if you’re able to get your hands on a copy of the book, it’s well worth the read!!!

AGAIN on a similar note- looking at his culture and history is SOOOOOOOO important!!!! For example, the beginning of Seperate Ways features Luis doing a style of Flamenco called ‘Seguiriyas’- and once I’m awake in the morning and fully able to navigate the horror of the tumblr tagging system I’ll look for a post that goes deeper into this HCNEHWNEUDJDIS but Indigenous and Spanish culture are full of such rich and beautiful history you can pull from it is SO worth taking a look!!! Not to mention, you can play around with the fact that Luis was raised pretty Hardcore Catholic or the fact that it’s implied his Grandfather fought in/would have survived the Spanish Civil war as concepts a ton!!!

And if you’re writing specifically for Serennedy, taking a look at the Queer history of Spain/Europe as a whole is DEFINITELY worth your time!!!!! Looking back and remembering the people who came before us is always important and lends a hand to how we perceive our own funny lil fictional guys BCBEHENEJDNXJ

That being said, I only ever see this with writers who already have bigoted views and you seem like literally the nicest person EVERRRRRR so this TOTALLY isn’t directed at you!!!!!! But it’s super important not to fall into just straight-up racist stereotypes- calling Luis a predator, saying he’s a sex-driven animal, generally referring to him as ‘dirty’ etc is stuff that unfortunately you don’t JUST see with Luis but with many other POC characters too (like Carlos for example- he gets the brunt of it a LOT) so when you see stuff like this, don’t be afraid to call it out!!!!!!

genuinely hate the way heaven and hell is set up in hazbin like. in all honesty. whats the point of using the dantes inferno layers of hell if you are only allowed to use the pride layer. for every sinner. why the fuck would that make sense. like. a serial killer would be in the like. idfk wrath or lust (bloodlust) layer. dantes inferno isnt even fucking canonical to the bible.

the angel designs are flat, their movements feel stilted to me, all the humans in heaven just have a color swapped monster design just like the sinners.

and no fucking shit people think alastar is fucking white, you only find out that he mixed race from somewhere else. i only found out through my friend that the guy is half black because he saw a video or something of her drawing alaster in his human form (this sounds aggressive, but i am not doing that towards you this is in total agreement wirh you)

also i think adam as an angel is stupid as shit from like the standpoint of someone who is interested in the bible in the way greek myth isnt "canonical"/is separate from greek gods

the designs look like theyre still a fucking pain to animate, and i do genuinely like a lot of the designs, i think angel dust is iconic and uh. the bat cat guy looks pretty cool, i think theyre more for like. comic books.

story feels flat and rushed, and very much like i'm watching a childrens show for adults, and i fucking hate adult shows that think putting sex, seears, blood and gore in their product is soooooo fucking mature and cool of them and its just boring and samey and it fucking sucks. if hazbin was nade by someone else i'm sufe the peoduct wouldve been handled so much better and treated the audience like adults

for the first part, of the lore. the lore gets so much more fucking confusing and lamer if you watch the spinoff helluva boss. they go into more detail & spend more time in the other layers for each episode, but theyre all so lame and predictable. the lust layer is pink and full of clubs & bars because. romance??? the greed layer is green and pretty much chicago, especially with the demon mobs (demon mobs Should sound more fun). the wrath ring is red/orange and like The Middle Western Desert that literally takes place during the Wild West from USAmerica. LIKE they made dantes inferno LAME!!! wheres the imagination??? was the best you could come up with for greed "chicago" and wrath "the wild west"???? come on

and the way heaven and hell are addressed is so much more confusing. like. the angels have a Moral code Not To Kill, even if theyre demons (in the episode the angel opposite of IMP are focused on, they lose their jobs when they indirectly kill a guy they weren't supposed to kill), which comes into direct conflict with what the angels Were ALREADY DOING IN HAZBIN???

itd be one thing if they were taking place apart from each other in the timeline, and we don't really know that ATM, but they're supposed to take place in the same universe, so they never really seem to make up their minds on what they wanna do with that???

AND LIKE the core concept of hazbin hotel is broken from the very worldbuilding the show is built on. no demon would ever wanna work on redeeming themselves by just going to a hotel, and even in cases when they do, its really just to sabotage each other, before they solve their problems like. my fucking little pony. i cant believe this was a show made for the same target group as bojack horseman or moral orel, it makes me sick

and this idea isnt broken either!!! it can work!!! the good place worked and improved on this idea In Strides and did it with much more maturity and respect for its audience than vivziepop could even do for two of her shows

like hazbin hotel & helluva boss could be improved upon, they just need Better Writers and a Stronger Vision for where the story could go. im not even being a hater Just Because (altho i am), i'm just really upset that this was the direction the show is seemingly going to with no stop. ive seen people that have looked up to vivziepop as inspiration and felt deeply betrayed when the story was shit, when the writing was horrible, its really disappointing to see. i think the only people left watching this are people who think what vivziepop is doing is good, even if she spends more than half her time online looking up her shows to try to fight back against any and all criticism

THE BEST I CAN GIVE IS UHHHH a little bit of background on some things that have been cooking because im bored.

The basis of elkas character being a control freak who is so obsessed w upholding the status quo of her mind and staying normal and being ‘happy’ in her future despite everything she sees being a doomed ending. the vision of a married life with nils lutefisk, who never really seemed to care about her and who she doesnt even know she actually loves or not. because it doesnt feel like how it SHOULD feel and she wished he was something different but she doesnt know what

she doesnt allow herself to think maybe shes Never been happy with a man. that maybe she only feels the need to be because thats all shes ever known or seen herself having

also the added very important headcanon that elka gets so obsessed over this future that she forces herself to have visions of it constantly, over working her future sight to the point that by the time the canon game happens her vision has clouded over and shes completely blind and has to use clairvoyance to ‘see’. (based on her early concept model with white eyes. anyway)

her first year of summer camp kicks off her relationship with nils but also an unexpected friendship with Kitty, and they end up getting very close, and though its confusing its the best elkas ever felt- up until she’s graced with a vision of her and kitty getting into a terrible fight, and rather than putting herself through that she just pretends they were never friends in the first place. (because shes normal)

kitty is understandably confused and upset about this and doesnt know why elka is suddenly giving her the cold shoulder. they both leave camp completely fucked up over their toxic female friendship drama and the next year kitty is ‘seemingly’ over it, already rebounding to a New girl she met on the bus, franke.

of course, franke is a lot different than elka. kitty finds her a lot easier to get along with, more relaxed, they kind of compliment each other in a way. the budding friendship to serious crush to summercamp love story pipeline.

BUT.. franke cant really help but noticing how tense kitty and elka are around each other.

its a lot to get into but my friends and i kind of spitballed franke having like. psychic hyper empathy based powers. shes more of a feelings guy. she kinda goes with whatever kitty wants but she can be good when shes not around. theres like a whole thing i made up for it BUT anyway

she doesnt know whats wrong with them just that the vibes are fucking rancid and she wants to help kitty out by getting to the bottom of it. and so she starts talking to elka when she can , and elka pities her a bit because she sees franke as this completely gullible goofball under kittys spell, cursed to follow her around like a lost puppy. especially because kitty has only grown hostile to elka since theyve been back at camp, elka kind of knows kitty is/was using franke to make her jealous. much like , well, she was using JT to get to nils. so franke is kind of like a tennis ball getting kicked between the two of them.

because a lot of this stuff is roleplayed out there was a bit going about franke being illiterate (because shes dumb) that franke plays into in a self deprecating humor kind of way, but elka takes it completely seriously and takes soooooo much pity on her she decides to help franke learn to read by showing her her favorite book pride and prejudice. has franke hold the book while elka uses her eyes to read it for her. this made a lot of sense in the moment dont worry

franke goes along with this even tho she can. absolutely read. because, like, maybe if they talk enough she can squash her and kittys beef. this ... goes okay, but franke ends up really enjoying this little book reading thing they do together. she is unfortunately a little baby butch lesbian and elka is pretty and nicer than she initially thought, when she isnt talking about stupid boys, and gets Really into the romance aspects of the book that Elka herself enjoys. and elka ends up enjoying it too, because without kitty around, franke is just such a good listener, and a little charming, and does whatever she asks, and gosh, if she was a boy she’d be everything elka wanted, wouldnt she? oh well!

and even though she looks, she cant find an end in sight for their future. maybe this friendship could be different from kitty, maybe she doesnt have to be afraid of how close they are. so she lets it happen, because it distracts her from the grief of boys who refuse to understand her. every time her and nils break up, franke is there to say Well, he never deserved you anyhow! and she feels better for just a little while.

this isnt even getting INTO the feelings that evolve over the future and the self destruction elka puts herself thru to secure her marriage but ive rambled enuff. maybe you all will feel what i feel if only for a moment

s4′s theme: putting up fronts

the s4 themes that stick out the most to me are: memories, lying, and putting up fronts. but right now im going to talk about putting up fronts

max: max is not okay. she is dealing with trauma and poor mental health but pretends to be okay. she lies to lucas and the counselor about being fine when she’s not.

lucas: lucas is trying to be someone else to fit in with the popular basketball guys, even though he doesn’t really like them that much or click with them as freinds. he also lies about being in helllfire and knowing eddie.

chrissy: chrissy is basically playing a character. she’s being pressured by her mother into being thinner and is struggling with an eating disorder, which she hides. she is the star cheerleader and is dating jason, even though she’s not her real self around him and doesn’t trust him. (she didn’t tell him about her problems and instead went to eddie for help, she was more focused on keeping up the facade than being truthful with her boyfriend).

fred and patrick: all of vecna’s victims are struggling with internal pain. for max it was guilt and trauma over billy, for chrissy it was her eating disorder and the pressure from her mom/her whole life, for fred it was guilt and trauma from the car accident, for patrick it was the abuse from his father, and for nancy it was the guilt and trauma over barb that she had been carrying for almost 3 years at that point.

robin: steve gets on robin for not being herself around vickie.

steve: robin gets on steve for not being himself around girls

vickie: vickie is clearly closeted so that is a front she is having to put up

nancy: nancy lies to fred about everything with jonathan being fine, but he eventually gets her to admit that she’s annoyed by his behavior.

the entire hawkins gang are also always lying about eddie and knowing where he is.

jonathan: on a more comedic note, jonathan (and argyle) was always pretending to not be high and was also lying to nancy about college.

joyce (and murray): joyce and murray are lying to the kids about going to alaska to save hopper.

hopper and enzo: hopper and enzo have been lying to the other guards about what they’re up to. enzo has been pretending to beat hopper when in reality they’re working out their plan. also, yuri is lying to all of them about his plan to take the money and turn joyce and murray over to the government.

el: el has been lying to mike for months about her life in lenora. she says she has lots of friends and is super popular and is doing great in school, when none of that is true. when mike gets to lenora, she keeps up the lie even when will is telling her its not right and that mike will get mad when he finds out. (and he was right. mike did get mad. but not at el. he got mad at will. hm. interesting.)

will: will is gay and closeted. he is constantly putting up the front that he is straight and carrying around this internal pain and shame. we see him lie directly to mike in the van scene about his feelings by saying they’re el’s

henry/001/vecna: henry wasn’t being truthful to el about who he was and what his real plans were. we didn’t even find out who he really was until the very end of vol 1.

dr brenner: “papa doesn’t always tell the truth.”

soooooo that leaves two people

number one:

every single character is putting up a front. they’re all lying about something. but not mike? YES, mike too.

mike’s style took a 180 when he went to california. he went from black jeans and leather jackets and his little gay collared button ups and black converse to ..... what ever the hell this is. it’s such a stark contrast, and you’re supposed to notice how different he looks and how different he’s acting. because he is PUTTING UP A FRONT. HE IS LYING. this cool, colorfully dressed, perfect boyfriend-mike is just....not mike. definitely not the mike we saw in hawkins the episode before. i think argyle said it best, actually:

then when el leaves to get her powers back, he reverts back to who we saw in episode one both in how he dresses and how he acts.

the black jeans and converse are back, and to be honest, post s4 ep3 mike is the closest ive felt to s2 mike since...well....season 2. this isn’t to say that mike literally decided to start being himself again when el left, i’m just pointing out the sublte visual cues the writers are sending you. when el is around, mike isnt himself. when she’s not around, and if will is there, he is himself.

finn wolfhard said that in s4 mike is trying to stay on a “normal path”. meanwhile mike is in the hellfire club which is basically the school’s ‘freak’ club and is lead by eddie “forced conformity, thats whats killing the kids” munson. if mike is trying to stay on a normal path to not be bullied and not be in the spotlight, why is he in the hellfire club? why does he associate himself with eddie? because that’s not the normal path finn was talking about. the ‘normal path’ is the mike we see in the airport and at the roller rink. he’s trying to continue being this cool normal guy in a perfect happy relationship with his girlfriend, but it all falls apart because it’s just not reality. he’s not in love with el. he’s in love with will. he’s not the person he portrays himself as the first day in lenora. but he didn’t have to pretend to be that person after el moved, when she moved he could go back to being himself without stressing over it or feeling forced to conform. i think mike’s realization at the end of s3 really spooked him, so now he’s doubling down when he’s around el. HE’S PUTTING UP A FRONT. mike is a lot more complicated, but like will, he is queer and repressing it. i am also a firm believer that mike was not being truthful in his monologue to el. he does love el, but not in the way he’s saying and not in the way she wants. the monologue being his big lie of the season fits right in with this theme.

there’s still one more person to discuss in this post, and this is who it is:

eddie is the only character who wasn’t lying or putting up a front. eddie was telling the truth about not being a murderer, but no one believed him. in a season where the theme is lying, conforming, and putting up fronts, eddie is meant to stick out like a sore thumb. he is supposed to be the clarity in the middle of the lies and conformity. the school and town hated him for being different, but eddie didn’t care. he embraced being a freak, and took kids like mike dustin and lucas under his wing. he was closest with dustin this season, and dustin is another character who wasn’t putting up a front, though he did tell lies, which is why i included him earlier. the closer someone is to eddie, who represents truth and anti-conformity, the more true to themselves they are. chrissy’s facade fades when she’s with eddie, and we see her real personality. she genuinely laughs and smiles, and she opens up some about her problems. that scene of them in the woods is how we learn that who chrissy portrays herself as is not real. when mike started high school and got taken under eddie’s wing, he stopped the whole s3 ‘im growing up and dnd is stupid will im not gay’ game. then, when he leaves hawkins (and in turn, eddie) he reverts back to that whole fake persona. eddie was thought to be the killer because he just so happened to be nearby when they happened. again, im not saying eddie and his personality actually caused the attacks, its just symbolism the writers might be sliding in. when eddie was near these people who are internally suffering and putting up fronts, the truth was revealed. and in the end, eddie died. all of vecnas victims died (max, briefly). the victims feeling forced into bottling up their pain and internalizing it made them suffer, which ultimately lead to them being targeted by vecna and dying. had they not carried this around and suffered in silence, vecna would not have been able to target them as easily. lucas tried repeatedly to get max to open up to him and talk to him, it’s literally all he wanted. his love and care and concern for her is what ultimately saved her life. when max was being vecnad the first time, she first remembered what lucas said “We’re right here. I’m right here.” that reminded max that she’s not in this fight alone. she doesn’t have to bottle this up and push everyone away and solve it on her own. she doesn’t have to suffer in silence. remembering that enabled her to remember all of the happiness she’s experienced in life, and that it’s worth fighting for. at one point max saying when she’s being attacked by vencna, she’ll just run towards the light. this obviously represents happiness and love and warmth, but it also represents truth. but the second time, this didn’t happen. lucas saved her life again via the snowball memory, but that didn’t last forever. lucas wasn’t able to step in again with kate bush and remind max she doesn’t have to do this alone. why? because jason stepped on her headphones and broke them.

in this little analogy, jason isn’t included in the lying/putting up fronts group, because jason is the anti-eddie. this is basically canon already but im gonna go more into it. eddie represents anti-conformity, being true to yourself, embracing being a freak, freedom to do what you love no matter what anyone thinks. jason is the opposite of this. he hates eddie and we see them butt heads in episode one. jason is the one enforcing the conformity. he’s the captain of the basket ball team who all wear uniforms. they all look the same. jason is a fucking scary character to me because he is basically written to parallel a cult leader. in episode one they foreshadow his weird preacher behavior when he gives his speech at the pep rally and the party are looking at him like .... is this dude serious? from the outside looking in, jason looks absolutely insane. he’s wrong about eddie, but he refuses to believe he’s wrong. he makes it his mission to convince the entire town to go on a witch hunt after eddie. hunt the freak, right? when lucas confronts him with the truth in ep 9, he still refuses to believe him. he calls hellfire a satanic cult, which is frustrating to watch because HE is the one paralleling a religious cult leader. jason constantly brings up bible verses and does all the other weird shit he does, and its so eerie to watch for the reasons i just explained. so jason, who represents forced conformity, is what really put the nail in max’s coffin. simply because he is a fucking insane cult leader in training, he took max’s outlet from her and forced her to be trapped in her own mind. forced conformity, that’s what's killing the kids.

circling back to mike, he proudly associated himself with eddie and looked up to him. the costume designers talked about how mike was influenced by eddie and admired him. someone who is trying to ‘stay on a normal path’ does not associate themselves with the town’s freak. eddie was a positive influence on mike and helped him feel more confident in being his true self. mike was even pissy at lucas for trying to get in with the popular kids to avoid bullying. allow me to repeat myself: the kid who is trying to stay on a normal path is mad at his friend for trying to stay on a normal path. it’s also interesting to me how the character who represents forced conformity (jason) is extremely religious and uses the bible when he enforces conformity. that is so, so, so, so queercoded. like....unbelievably queer coded. take that as you will

anways, my point is, mike was putting up a front in s4. he was trying to stay on a normal path. but that normal path and front has nothing to do with hawkins or bullying or popularity, its about his sexuality and his relationships with will and el.

hii im just gonna throw my opinion in bcs !! i honestly dont think the way you write it is bad and i like the slowburn and i definitely can see it there. like how theyre getting closer and everything, a lot of things obviously wouldnt happen in the start before they got to know each other and yeah !

so im loving it, its one of my fav works on here as of now and i think youre doing the slowburn just right ! i think the main “problem” here is that the updates ARE a little slow considering most of the fics are one shots you can read in one go so i understand why waiting 2+ days for an update with 8 screenshots might be annoying for some people but i dont really mind ! just maybe could be a little longer so its worth the wait 😅 and its a little annoying sometimes when it FINALLY seems like theyre getting somewhere and then they just act like nothing happened like damn😓 couldve made a move already

ALSO someone mentioned hanbin seeming shady but i think thats because there are a lot of characters and you cant just be so detailed about everyone so it might seemed like it but its not the case. like when he left her at the park (?) i think.

i really hope this doesnt come off as mean, i actually wanted to back YOU up because i think youre doing the slowburn right and i like it like that ! just yeah could be longer updates but its still all good. my roommate knows ab this smau too because i be going around the apartment like “damn i hope theres an update tonight” LMAOO so yeah keep going at your pace, ill eat it up anyway ! :) sorry for rambling too much haha

I admit at first i was kinda confused on how long this was supposed to take as other smaus on here took like a couple of months to be completed but i ended up taking soooooo much longer and about them not acting on it, don't you worry i kinda rearranged the chapters and we are soon entering their era where they realize they have feelings for one another lolll

about hanbin's character, i basically just needed an excuse to make y/n and jeno have some alone time but i think it's kinda fun how some of you are reading into it and speculating and stuff

I'm currently reading lattimore's iliad, and I'm planning to read an oresteia translated by Anne Carson. What are some other works you'd recommend/love? And the translation you like. I want to read up on the classics as I didn't really go to school past 14, and I love how passionate you are about them, so I thought I'd ask, thanks either way!

hi! sorry for taking one million years to reply to this :/ every time i try to make a Brief list of my fave texts i explode. also please bear in mind that this is a list of Texts I Personally Really Like and not a list of Texts That Are The Hashtag Classical Canon.

if you enjoy(ed. it's been a while) the iliad and An Oresteia then probably try the odyssey? i like emily wilson's translation and also ive said this before but her introduction is soooooo good. she has a translation of the iliad coming out next year and i'm probably more excited to read her introduction to it than like. the actual translation

also in the genre of epic (the best genre) i actually prefer latin epic so. definitely the aeneid (post on different translations here!) which is also very uhhh foundational for so so much of subsequent latin literature. including my other favourite epic poem, lucan's pharsalia (post on translations again!) which is a historical epic about the civil war between caesar and pompey.

this is where the list gets very much into things i personally like. the pharsalia is so cool to me because it's not a history/historiography but it Does do weird things To history and gets away with them because of its genre. veryyy similarly, aeschylus' persians is a tragedy (the only surviving tragedy based on historical events!) about the persian response to defeat at the battle of salamis. i don't have a preferred translation for this one just read whatever! but definitely read some sort of introduction or the wikipedia page because it's weird for a Lot of reasons. also necromancy happens. and there's boats. what more can anyone want!

i've also been really into livy's ab urbe condita atm. it's a history of rome but the first 5 books especially are very. well i just don't think that actually happened. BUT the early roman like. political myth making is cool actually! (if only because if you read it then when lucan is like oh and the ghost of curius dentatus was there you can be like oh i know who that guy is! a Lot of latin lit involves invoking historical exempla and livy is a major source for a Lot of those.) i actually care very little about greek myth (and the take that the romans just 'stole' greek religion. like what) because i think the romans' mythologisation of e.g. lucius junius brutus is way more fun. but ALSO livy was writing a history starting from the Foundation of rome at a time when augustus was 'ReFounding' rome so you're always a bit like. hmmmmmm. or like you read about coriolanus in livy and you're like oh wow foreshadowing of the political situation that would later lead to the civil wars! but then you remember that livy was writing it After the civil wars and then you fall into the livian timeloop and then you explode.

ok now ignore livy because my favourite historian is actually sallust. would recommend william batstone's translation of (and introduction to) the bellum catilinae. Catilina Is There. sallust's catiline is soooooo sexy like his countenance was a civil war itself! enough eloquence but not enough wisdom! animus audax subdolus varius! he's haunted by sulla's ghost! he's didn't cause the fall of the republic so much as he was a symptom of it! he's an antihero! he's cicero's mimetic double! he probably doesn't drink blood! he would have died a beautiful death IF it had been on behalf of his country (except that quote is actually from florus maybe via livy lol)! He Did Nothing Wrong. you want to read the bellum catilinae soooooo bad. also it is v fun to read alongside with cicero's catilinarian orations (the invective speeches against catilina). i think i read the oxford world's classics translation of those but i Cannot remember who it is by.

also you know what i really like what i've read of florus' epitome of roman history which is maybe kind of a summary of livy but also florus is totally doing his own thing (he is sooo influenced by lucan! nice!) highly recommend the (relatively brief) section on the first punic war. it does cool things with boats.

i also love plutarch's life of cato the younger!!! one of my favourite ancient texts of all time ever. like a) it's plutarch and he is fun. would recommend the life of alexander the great as well tbh. and b) it's cato the younger and he is so so so fucked up.

finallyyyyyy bcs this is getting long. the poetry of catullus (and a post on translations is here!) like It's Catullus. the original poor little meow meow. what more can i say

EEP !!! oh my goodness, what a tall order....

reboots are hard for me i think because i have a particular philosophy about them i suppose. while nobody can really stop you from just making the same thing again, but more/maybe slightly modernized, its really rather boring and frankly gouache to do in my opinion; yes, even in the case of things that were cancelled prematurely. however being fully honest my own limits to this get tested when its something i really like and thought was super well executed, only for it to get cancelled prematurely, and class of 3000 might be the ultimate test for this for me because i think just 28 episodes is unreasonably short even by today's standards, not just mid-2000s standards. i feel like it would be really hard to fight the impulse to just be like "just pretend the show was never cancelled, lets just pick it back up from where it was left off" for the most part, with some elements of modernization clearly but overall not much

class of 3000 also almost feels like a time capsule not because its particularly dated, i actually think a lot of the humor and gags still hold up really well by todays standards, and some other elements also feel even a little ahead of their time, but you know. it was still made for a mid-2000s audience, and one of the biggest aspects of that is sunny, who is. i mean yes hes pretty much intended to be a fictionalized andre 3000 stand in, but that sort of developed later on in the process of the show as andre 3000 became more and more intrinsic to the process (he didnt want it to just be something he licensed but was otherwise mostly uninvolved in), as initially he was also directly inspired by/based on sonny rollins, so to me with these two compounding inspirations he exists as a kind of interesting element of celebrity culture at the time which is soooooo so deeply different than the celebrity culture of today. like, to the point where sunny bridges being a world-renowned musical legend is almost kind of just set dressing, after the pilot episode it just kind of becomes an element of what makes sunny So Cool and maybe helps establish a plot or some kind of series of hijinks for an episode or two, i just dont think you could really approach it in such an almost understated and whimsical way today given the ubiquitous social media nightmare we all exist under

i also definitely wouldnt want to change the art and animation style. there was a BTS interview i saw where somebody on the team said "nothing out there today looks like this" and to be quite frank i think that still holds true, class of 3000 draws from a lot of both visual and musical inspirations that i dont think you see get utilized very much in animation (probably other things but we're focusing on animation !) even still to this day, it just really kind of exists in its own niche and it does so well. like i shudder to think of them trying to adapt this to a 3D animation style of some kind not to sound like a hater because i definitely think theres gorgeous 3D animation out there (and examples where both styles are utilized together to enhance the elements of both !!!!!) maybe for like a guest animated music video it could work i think mixing mediums would align well with the ethos of class of 3000 but for the whole show ??? noooooo fucking wayyyyy

this is a lot of preamble to say maybe i would take a Modernization-But-Not kind of approach to it. maybe keep the setting in atlanta in the mid-2000s but use it to still speak to more modern ideas and messages because i feel like a lot of the stuff class of 3000 was trying to introduce (understanding and appreciating diversity, expanding your creative horizons, getting kids invested in music and especially the presence and history of genres and instruments they may not be more familiar with) is still very relevant to today ! maybe again i would beef up some of the explorations of celebrity culture and its pitfalls and shortcomings because again in the influencer era thats become even more topical and complicated than it was in the mid-aughts. i mean as long as theres been a concept of celebrity there have been little kids who want to grow up to be famous so thats not new but the sort of, idk, hyper-visibility of it and the way other people market it to children i think is something worth exploring; and also i think keeping it to 2007 type mediums and technology would serve as a good shield against making to obvious, self-referential, and preachy. also just take out the more distasteful 2000s era jokes centering transmisogyny and letting a white guy do a bad impression of a latino man that would probably be good

EHEHEEEE OK SO I'll say my fav from each game

Mgs1 is def Liquid he. He's so overdramatic it's really funny. He did so many backflips while explaining his tragic backstory 🥰 and then he just fucking died and turned into an arm which is the real tragedy (I have so many random HCs for him it's insane... I also rewrote his backstory a little...the recessive thing is so dumb)

Mgs2 I think it's a split between Raiden and Fortune. Raiden I really enjoyed playing as a character who is just... idk how to put it I just like that he's flawed and not some morally perfect charismatic guy. It feels like he's set up to be that way and then he whines about everything and is very dismissive at some points. It feels like he's a real person and not perfectly crafted to be the ultimate stereotypical good guy protagonist who can stay cool and collected in every situation. He has his moments where he lets emotion get the better of him and I like it a lot.

Fortune I have less to say about her but it doesn't mean I like her less. I think she's a really tragic character backstory wise but I also like how she sort of "plays into it" I guess? Ocelot points it out himself near the end of the game ("you couldn't get enough of the drama"). I thought the ending where she found out she could've died any time and she didn't have some magic ability was sad too and I lowkey wish she didn't die and was like redeemed somehow (imagine she comes back in mgs4 and has to go against Vamp or something that would've been so cool)..anyway I guess I didn't actually have less to say I like Fortune a lot blehhh😋

mgs3 AGH.. EVA ILY she is such a well written character and I love her so much I could write an essay on her if I wanted but I'll keep it more brief here. She's like a perfect subversion of the typical sexualized woman in video game thing...it's what she's doing as a spy for the mission and the best part is it doesn't even really work lol nice job snake. The game itself even adheres to whether Eva is in her Eva persona or her Tatyana one. It's....aghhhhghhh so great. (I have so many thoughts about her and Liquid btw)

Mgs4...difficult but probably Screaming Mantis. For real this time not a lot to say about her but I do like her a lot more since playing the game she went from my least fav B&B unit member to my fav one. She was really fun to watch in all her cutscenes and her boss fight was one of the best MGS boss fights I've ever done tbh. The callbacks and references to the first game were so good I won't lie I was giggling kicking my feet a lil bit. Screaming Mantis ily I have so many thoughts <333

Peace Walker ermmm Kaz and Paz equal I can't decide..also maybe Amanda. Yeah I like everyone a lot 😭 and Cécile....not Snake tho sorry lol. I haven't finished the game so I haven't gotten the full character arcs of everyone so it's hard to pinpoint exact explanations but you know I love Kaz forever and ever mwah mwah (I'm also a transfem Kaz truther and I'm RIGHT!!!). Amanda has a lot of really cool tapes explaining a lot of...not really exposition but it gives a lot of great context to her character. And her voice acting especially in cutscenes is some of the best voice acting I've seen in an mgs game so it adds a lot. Paz I need to learn more about her. I know basic plot points but not the inbetween stuff that really lets you get to know her. I do feel really sad for her though, Kojima decided he wanted shock value instead of a female character having a nice ending 🤷‍♀️ Sucks.

Mgsv QUIET!!!! QUIET ILY!!! she's soooooo OUGH. I'm glad a lot of the fandom has fixed her from her extremely flawed portrayal in the game because it shows what really could've been and I think I latch more onto that than the version of her in the game just a little. The foundation they were working with was still really good. The way they show her and venom building such a strong bond despite never having a single conversation is really well done and I like it a lot. Quiet ily my favourite creaturething killgirl my favourite ear biter offer...

THIS SCENE WITH RIN IS. SOOOOOO FUCKING FRUSTRATING BC ITS CLEAR WHAT THEY -MEANT- TO DO BUT BOTCHED IT HORRIBLY

i’m copying and pasting this but

so i think this is like. Rin’s second most controversial scene in this entire anime. literally only episode 15 and the fandom war that followed that’s STILL raging to this day can possibly compare, but holy shit nothing else Rin does makes as much discourse as this scene because this one has both people who hate sessrin and people who love sessrin coming togethee to say “hey what the fuck-”

this is such a weird scene because i feel like. it is simultaneously misunderstood while also really deservedly called out on how it makes Rin look almost borderline sociopathic regarding the fact she’s talking to her kids about the fact things are literally always gonna kill them and i feel like this is a great example of “there are almost two separate characters named Rin in this show” and this one is endemic of like, a kid that never grew up, the one I don’t really like.

so it’s like this

i UNDERSTAND what this scene is meant to convey. that she’s not afraid because she knows her kids are always gonna come out on top.

the fact is: being Towa and Setsuna kinda sucks and it’s always gonna kinda suck even if things are better now. i’ve talked about how much i LOVE when Jakan refers to them as “Rin’s daughters” and not “Sesshomaru’s daughters,” but the fact is to the world at large outside of their social circles- until they build up their own legends properly, they’ll always primarily be “Someone’s” daughters, and more specifically “Sesshomaru’s daughters.”

there’s always gonna be an entire conga line of pissant demons that are gonna wanna take a shot at them for the sole reason that it’ll give them clout. in Final Act Jaken noted that a lot of demons wanted to take on Sesshomaru when he had no sword because even though he was in a severely weakened state with no weapon it’d STILL give them recognition if they killed him. killing his kids give them clout in some capacity. and even if they weren’t his kids, they’re still hanyou- free game to kill for fun and laughs.

so this scene. like.

the intent to me is clearly that she’s this relaxed because she knows there’s nothing they can’t overcome. there’s no need for Rin to be afraid or show fear because they’ll be safe. i truly believe that’s what this scene is meant to convey- laughing at the very concept that Towa and Setsuna can’t overcome an enemy that would challenge them- they’re their fathers kids, her beautiful and beloved children who along with moroha literally saved the entire world twice, once in the modern era and now in the sengoku jidai.

so this scene is mean to be her laughing it off and showing joy despite the macabre subject matter. i totally get it, and i think because of that, i’m less harsh on this scene than some others are. but also.

JESUS CHRIST, RIN

look at her! she looks like she’s a cheerleader at an event or something! it looks joyful! if i was Towa i’d be fucking disturbed beyond words!!! like hey, you just saved the world twice, you had to have a tearful and sad goodbye with your adoptive family maybe forever- and THIS is how your mom talks about things always trying to kill you!? i’d probably ask Moroha, Kagome, and Inuyasha if I could crash at their place for a few days while trying to figure out what the FUCK is my mom’s deal!

“hey moroha uh. my mom kinda… cheered and laughed when talking about things wanting to kill me? think i can like. crash here for a few days or something? think the old guy who gives you bounties would let me stay at his place a few days if i agree to do some work for him?”

like. here’s how i think it should’ve been. and i’m just one western fan with no stakes in anything but like… i kind of imagine something that would’ve been significantly less controversial would’ve been her still smiling at the beginning when giving them gifts, and then her expression getting more serious when talking about the unpleasant stuff, like this:

and putting on like, a serious face about it. because yeah, it sucks. they can’t JUST live in peace. there’s always gonna be these assholes that are always gonna try to kill them. just because the most dangerous conflict (God willing) in Kirinmaru and the Grim Comet has ended doesn’t mean there won’t be danger- they’re going to be in danger for literally the rest of their lives, and she gets serious when talking about that to her only kids…

… but they’re both gonna be ok. she smiles again when expressing that. we’re not gonna pretend it doesn’t fucking suck. but they’re always gonna be ok. she has nothing less than complete confidence that they’re always gonna rise above and against everything that tries to harm them. she’s not fucking borderline cheering about it, but she has so much confidence in that, it’s not an opinion to her, it’s a fact.

so she smiles not only knowing her kids are OK, they’re gonna be OK even if things does, but to assure them that they’ll always be ok in the end. at most, there’s a little laugh at it all- “You really are your father’s children, you know? You inherited his power… you’ll be OK no matter what!”

and i feel like that would’ve conveyed what this scene was TRYING To do while also not making Rin seem borderline sociopathic about this fact and treating it like a game little kids are playing or a complete and absolute disregard for her children’s safety just so she can gush about her husband, the husband that Towa literally JUST confided in with her mother that she kind of. resents him a bit for not helping them out (WHICH IF THERE’S A CONTINUATION I WANNA SEE HAPPEN MORE)

i get this scene. i really do. so i’m not as hard on it as others are. but also holy fuck what the FUCK was the animation and voice acting direction with this scene? what the fuck? it would’ve been EASY to make it better!

thank god i found the text its just. SO frustrating bc i LOVE Yashahime, i love Rin so much i don’t CARE what anyone says or even if it’s not that great or anything, its just. i feel like there was a big intent in this scene, but holy shit it was so. bad. it’s executed SO BAD and i can’t get over it

Trust The Fungus

This is a review ramble thing of The Super Mario Bros Movie (the 2023 one, not the one from 30 years earlier the title is joking about, but more on the 1993 one later). There will be spoilers.

(You will see me using the word "cringe" a lot in this. Disclaimer: I do not actually believe in cringe culture at all in the slightest in ANY form, it's just a useful shorthand for a special sort of deep revulsion within the soul. Anyway.)

So like, we all went into this expecting cringe because Illumination, right? The animation studio that peaked with their FIRST MOVIE, Despicable Me, and has put the low in lowbrow ever since. The animation studio who actively animates on the cheap for profit margins. Those guys.

But I, to start, want to report there are minimal amounts of cringe! Sure, "look at us, we're adorable" was cringe in the trailers and it's cringe here. Sure Mario hating mushrooms was a specific flavor (mushroom flavored?) of unnecessarily ironic that made me roll my eyes a bit even when the REST of the unnecessarily ironic humor didn't. But overall, it was good! Honestly I genuinely liked this movie a lot!

You probably haven't heard of Monster Hunter: Legends Of The Guild, a low-budget animated Monster Hunter movie Capcom quietly pushed to Netflix when the live-action one turned out to be shit. I always thought that one wasn't that great as a movie on its own but unlike the live action one was fantastic at actually being a MONSTER HUNTER movie - sort of an inverse of the Dark Knight Trilogy's modern "good movie bad Batman movie" reputation. This one is honestly quite similar, even though I at least personally think it stands on its own better than Monster Hunter: Legends Of The Guild does.

A large part of this is one of the movie's biggest strengths: the fanservice. And no I don't mean "Princess Peach in a bikini" fanservice. I mean THE LORE. There is soooooo much Mario lore here, and Nintendo homages, and different characters popping up left and right.

Every time I saw a reference or cameo I, like many, was like

And that in a way being the main draw over the plot and characters WOULD be kind of a bad thing but it's just so much fun and there's so many of them I don't care. On a related note everything's so on brand, it again genuinely feels like a MARIO movie. We all know Nintendo's kind of the Disney Lite of the video game world in terms of being overly controlling - lost ROM sites and fan projects and such sure are testament to that huh - but here it kind of worked in their favor because they very obviously kept Illumination in line. You can bet your bottom dollar that Shigeru Miyamoto poured over every frame of this movie and if there was something he didn't like it got the Paper Mario treatment.

Granted, we do start the movie with the Mario Bros living in real-world (if Nintendofied) Brooklyn, a take Nintendo is still apparently okay with despite Odyssey kinda sorta retconning it, and we see the Mario Bros having JOBS and a (a VERY Italian American, can confirm) FAMILY and it all feels akin to my gender and body dysphoria (Charles Martinet is Mario's dad though, that's really cute) but also it makes sense for the story they're trying to tell and it doesn't last long.

I should talk about the cast. I was pretty chill with how everyone did. Sure they shouldn't have been stuntcasted this fucking hard in the first place. Sure Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong took some growing on me. Sure I have noted Sociopolitical Problems with Crisp Rat and they should have cast literally anyone who is less Problematic(tm). Burt everyone did fine for what they were.

(Also say what you will about the Ironic(tm) humor, despite that kind of stuff Mario and Luigi's relationship feels real and genuine and I am here for it. I'm normally not THAT into same-gender sibling relations because that's not what I grew up with and NOW the gender situation is complicated but c'mon, they were cute.)

Also Jack Black got to sing. That alone made this movie worth seeing for me. The music was SUPER good when it's stuff like Bowser's singing and the cool remixed Mario tracks. The licensed music was a lot less necessary and in one case apparently replaced a perfectly good Donkey Kong remix and almost all of it could have been cut... Aside from the I Need A Hero sequence, that was inspired.

Speaking of Bowser. I like that they basically nudge nudge hint hint at Mario and Peach being an item but never actually do anything about it (just like the games!) whereas Bowser is UNDENIABLY horny on main for Peach and sees Mario as competition (also just like the games!) . Speaking of the references, they even use Bowser and Peach's Odyssey wedding outfits, which is cute.

(Also can we make Girlboss Peach game canon please?)

This movie does have a sense of... "This world operates on video game logic. We will try to explain it but we will not JUSTIFY it" and I think that's neat. At first I thought that was a factor as to why this movie was less popular with critics than fans, but I went with my mostly non-gamer family (more on them later) and not only could they follow it fine, my mom told me after the movie she understood video games and video game logic BETTER after seeing this movie so I dunno.

I will say. For a movie that is trying to distance itself from and replace the 1993 one as much as possible there are a lot of funny parallels. The Brooklyn origins leading to a secret portal beneath the city, Bowser's minions trying to isolate and strand our heroes, having One Toad In Particular help our heroes, the funky ass cars/karts, the princess of choice being more serious and also an isekai victim, the final fight being taken BACK to Brooklyn... It's amusing.

But overall I had fun. I want to see it again. I went to see it with my family and they enjoyed it too. Though if I had a nickel for every time a video game movie I saw on my birthday with my family that had a wedding scene that gets memed on by said family due to an upcoming wedding in said family I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot but it's weird it happened twice. Damn. Now I want Hollywood movies for every major Nintendo franchise that hasn't gotten one. And by "major" I mean "important enough to get into Smash". ROB and Game And Watch movies when? (More seriously I want Zelda and Fire Emblem and full-length Pikmin movies. God please.)

1. Room for one more troubled soul

I’m terribly proud of this fic, mostly because its length and immensity. I worked for it for months and had my ups and downs (e.g. it took me aaaaaages to finish the first friggin’ chapter?!), and while I did have an outline for the full story, there were also lots of plot lines that I improvised as the story developed and ended up working out quite by accident if I’m completely honest 😂 I had previously sort of abandoned a gigantic multi-chapter fic in the ski jumping fandom so I wasn’t sure if I could pull off a work that was this extensive, which is why I’m super proud of myself for having succeeded with this one, because I’m not the most patient of people. Now that I know I can actually finish a longer multi-chapter work, I have faith in myself to do so again 😇

2. But There’s Nothing To Be Afraid Of

Despite the horrifying styling of the title, I’m still proud of my first ever BC fic that I published a year ago (in which the guys go see Måneskin at a festival, in a nutshell). I was soooooo nervous about posting it that I decided to post the first two chapters at one go because nothing much happens in the first chapter and I was desperate to show the readers that hey! hey! this is actually more than Joel being sulky! just wait!! 😅 I don’t ship Joel/Damiano anymore, but this fic still holds a special place in my heart

3. The YouTuber AU, particularly Of rock, roll and dogs

I know I’ve said this at many occasions but I’ll say it again: I loooooove writing from Joel’s point of view, because he’s equal amounts of emo and dramatic, and it’s fun to play with that combo. I’m not afraid to boast my own trumpet here and say that this AU and especially the Joel POVs are funny af, and building the whole alternate universe was so much fun too!

4. You are the sun and I am just the planets

idk man, I’m just really fond of the College/University AU and I’m a sucker for pining, and as heartbreaking as it is, I also enjoy unrequited love as a trope. The mood of the fic changes gradually the more time Olli spends with Joonas, and I kinda like that effect; at this point his whole life wasn’t as consumed by his crush for Joonas (at least not to the extent it is in the main work in this AU), but you can clearly see he’s in too deep already… Plus I love the FOB song in the title/summary 💖

5. A nameless Olli/Aleksi prompt ficlet for my Valentine’s Day Fluff series (also on AO3)

Loosely based on the movie Just Like Heaven, which I've never seen myself but after reading the synopsis I made my own adaption of it in which Olli adopts Rilla when she was put in the shelter because Aleksi is lying in a coma in the hospital. I’m strangely proud of this one because I think it’s a really touching story and I did cry a little when writing it (NOT as in “omg I’m such a great writer” but as in “OMG DOGS!! 😭”) and I must say that I was a tiiiiiiiiiny bit disappointed it didn’t get as many notes as some of the other fics in this series that in my opinion weren’t as good. Yes, the ending is ridiculous and a little unrealistic but hey, it’s magic realism! Aleksi is a half-ghost for most of if, for goodness sake!! So please, if you haven’t read it yet, grab some tissues and do so, because I’m really proud of this one and I’m also very keen on making y’all cry (ohhh just WAIT ‘til you get to read the Gran Hotel AU!)

#i'm the biggest critic of my own work but i do like some of it i guess #none of them are PERFECT the way i want them to be but i just have to live with that lol #content-wise i'm also proud of the ski jumping fic but i hate how it'll remain unfinished for the time being. sorry :(

Hey, it's the Anon-who-started-Kinnporsche again ^^

Ok so I wasn't planning to drop a comment everytime I watched an episode lol but I just finished episode 6 and you were right damn it was so good! I loved seeing them being so goofy with eachother and then also managing to have serious conversations, and that they had to learn to compromise and work together since they were literaly stuck together. One of the thing that stood out the most for me was how well balanced the episode as a whole was, as in it started in a pretty humorous way despite their situation and it gradually became more and more serious, the same way they gradually got more "serious" into their relationship, which finally gave them the courage to actually talk about their relationship and for Kinn to apologize for his big fuck up. The contrast between the two rock paper rock cisors showcase so well imo (i literaly gasped when Porsche changed to scissors in the second one, like damn my boi !). And the symbolism with the handcuffs with Kinn learning to let Porsche go :((((((( I actually had seen this last scene in gifs, but damn I still wasn't prepared to be hit so hard like the actors' performance were so good!!

Also I remembered in episode 4 (I think), I loved the scene where Porsche tells Big off for expecting him to be shocked that Kinn is gay (and I was actually pleasantly surprised they actually adressed homophobia, as I initially thought that this was just the kind of fictional world where everyone is gay and no one cares, not that I wouldn't have liked that either lol). But I also felt so bad for Big bc he looked so devastated :( ? Was it because, as Kim had implied, he is actually in love with Kinn and thought "oh damn Kinn is gonna fall so hard for this guy and now I don't even have anything against him" ?

YESSSSSSSSSS! I'm so excited to read your reaction!

Ep 6 is honestly soooooo good. You're right, it's incredibly well balanced. And because the plot is driven by the progression of Kinn and Porsche's relationship, it's the show at its best.

Seeing them be goofy together! Yes! The best! And seeing Kinn just get to be himself and have fun with Porsche? Honestly so needed (for the viewer and Porsche) and gives you so much better an understanding of the mask Kinn has to put on daily to survive and to fulfill his family obligations.

Look at them! Happy babies!

I really love the way the show allows them room to talk and get to know one another. They have multiple conversations throughout different episodes where they open up. And ep 6 is one of the best examples with the fireside chat, and then again during Kinn's last apology and their talk about how they felt about having sex (and the way it happened). I think my mouth dropped open when Porsche changed his hand to scissors, and then I audibly gasped when Kinn easily released them from the cuffs lol. God, those were both such good reveals. Such a brilliant way of showing through their actions how deeply they had fallen for one another. And Kinn being able to let Porsche go, to essentially say, 'Your happiness is more important than my own' was one of the most beautiful moments of the series. As of course, was Porsche coming back. And you're sooooo right, Mile and Apo are brilliant in that final scene. I feel like big emotions played out by actors get a lot of attention, but subtly is far more challenging. Both of them play subtle emotions insanely well and it's on full display during that scene.

Omg Big. Um... ok. So I will just say that you won't ever get explicit confirmation or an answer to your question, but general fandom consensus is yes. Yes, it's very easy to conclude (as you'll see in future eps) that Big is in love with Kinn and recognized immediately that there was something between Kinn and Porsche. I will really look forward to hearing your thoughts when it comes to how Big's feelings play out. So I do feel during that confrontation in ep 4 that Big was almost hoping Porsche would be an asshole about Kinn being gay. And when Porsche tells him off, Big has this moment of thinking, 'Fuck' and knowing he stood no chance with Porsche properly in the picture.

Also, you know about the bonus hospital scene that comes right after ep 6 and before ep 7, yes? If not, it's HERE and you must watch it. It's the softest, sweetest shit ever.
