#guilty gear translations

Note
The indescribable emotional gut punch of the fact that Sol's Master Ghost, aka the literal manifestation of his soul and selfhood given tangible form, is a human figure being held down and restrained by literal gears and put on display. Hiii whoever designed the ghosts where are you I just wanna talk (like I know Sol's self-loathing has been a regular undercurrent for the whole series but man just putting it front and center like that c'mon...)
Sol's Masterghost is so fucked up why did they do that to him. There's creator commentary in the GG2O Material Collection book from Daisuke and Junya C. Motomura on this thing. I'll translate them.
Tumblr media
Daisuke Ishiwatari:
Essentially, a Master Ghost reflects the personality and background of its Master in some way. In Sol's case, the challenge was to create a strong design that would reflect his signature fire motif and the heavy burden of the fate he carries with him. As is a common concept throughout Sol's Tribe, we avoided incorporating animals and people in order to express his cold and blunt personality. This was also done to avoid making Sol's commands to his units seem heartless or callous.
Junya C. Motomura:
This is the first Master Ghost that I was tasked with designing. To be honest, I had a hard time grasping what a "Master Ghost" should look like, and I got lost. I drew many concept sketches and did rough modeling in 3D, tweaking the balance and composition, and placed familiar parts from Sol's designs here and there to tie it back to him, with a focus on the "gear" metaphor, which was the main keyword of the entire design. The black figure in the center of the human barbecue is not Sol, but Frederick; Sol before he became a Gear. The idea is that he is someone who got tangled in a gear and is now trapped. I laughed a lot when people called it "grilled grovelling"^1 on the internet right after the game released.
1: 焼き土下座 (yaki-dogeza) - "Dogeza" is that deep bowing where one's face is all but pressed against the ground. 焼き (yaki) (grilled/roasted/baked), as in "yakisoba," "dorayaki," "yaki-imo," etc.

All Fanny Win & Lose Quotes Translated (Guilty Gear Petit)
As the title says, this will be a translations of all* Win & Lose quotes involving Fanny from Guilty Petit and Guilty Gear Petit 2.
(*Except for the mirror match quote, if one exists, because it looks like you can’t get a proper mirror match in single player.)
I thought these would be interesting to know about, since they’re pretty much the only characterization Fanny gets outside of the Petit 1&2 story modes, plus getting to see a bit of how the other characters react to her.
--
Some more things to note before we get started:
Characters who appear in both Petit 1 and 2 have identical Win and Loss quotes in both games.
The final roster also includes four “GG” characters: GG Sol Badguy, GG May, GG Millia Rage, and GG Ky Kiske.
These four characters are essentially their base form counterparts, but with an alternate moveset inspired by the first Guilty Gear game. They are given different color schemes to differentiate them in gameplay, but they are effectively treated like they are the same characters, even though they have separate quotes and story modes.
The only exception is GG Ky Kiske, who is actually Robo-Ky!
Finally, in terms of status-quo, the characters are roughly plucked from around the Guilty Gear X era - for example Dizzy is part of the Jellyfish Pirates, but Zato-1 hasn’t fully passed away yet (but is still controlled by Eddie.)
Though the stories of these games are really more on the humorous side.
Now, onto the actual translations!

Fanny Win Quotes
(These are the quotes Fanny herself says when defeating these characters.)
Sol Badguy: せんせいは、かんじゃさんに リラックス してもらおうと おもっているからこそ あんなにユーモアにあふれているのです。 The doctor wants to help his patients relax, that's why he's so full of humor.
Ky Kiske: すみません、せのたかくてスマートで ウィットにとんだせかいさいこうのめいい、 ごぞんじないですか? Excuse me? Do you happen to know about the tall, suave, witty, and overall greatest doctor in the entire world?
May: せんせいはえいせいてきにかんがえて、 あたまをそっていらっしゃるのです。 …たぶん。 The doctor shaves his head for hygienic purposes. …I think.
Millia Rage: ねんのため くすり だしておきますね。 I'm giving you some medicine, just in case.
Potemkin: わたしのオデコのほうが かたかったみたいです。 Looks like my forehead is harder.
Kuradoberi Jam: せんせいのようしですか? あしがながくて くびもながい ひかりかがやいているかたですわ。 What does the doctor look like? He has long legs, and a long neck, and he's just a positively radiant person.
Mito Anji: せんせいもあなたのように ステキなめがねをしてらしたのよ。 The doctor was also wearing lovely glasses, just like you.
Johnny: ステキなけんさばきでしたわ、 でも せんせいにはかないませんわね。 That was some fine swordplay, but you still can't hold a candle to the doctor.
Faust: ああっ、せんせい… どこにいってしまわれたのでしょうか? Oh, Doctor… Where could you have gone?
Chipp Zanuff: ぜひ けんけつをおねがいします。 きっと ちが おおすぎるのですわ。 Please consider donating blood. I'm sure you have too much of it.
Axl Low: ごめんなさい、わたしは「はくいのてんし」 わたしのあいは みなさんびょうどうですの。 I'm sorry, but I'm a "white angel"- I love everyone equally.
(Translator's Note: “はくいのてんし/hakui no tenshi”, meaning “white angel” is a non-official term sometimes used for nurses in Japanese, as far as I can tell. As far as I’ve heard, this term might’ve come from the legacy of Florence Nightingale, particularly the 1937 movie based around her life called “The White Angel”. Obviously likening nurses to angels is a thing in English too, but I still wanted to explain the details here.)
Zato-1 (Eddie): あなたぜひ せんせいのオペを うけるべきですわ! You should absolutely get surgery from the doctor!
Testament: せいしんあんていざいを うっておきました。 もうだいじょうぶ! I have given you sedatives. Everything will be fine now!
GG Sol Badguy: せんせいのすばらしさがわからないんですか? おきのどくに。 Don't you know just how wonderful the doctor is? How unfortunate.
GG May: せんせいは「ハゲ」ではありません! 「ボウズ」ですわ!! The doctor is NOT bald! He just shaves!!
GG Millia Rage: あなたのこころのキズ、はやく せんせいに みてもらったほうがいいと おもいますわ。 I think you'd better let the doctor take a look at your broken heart as soon as possible.
GG Ky Kiske (Robo-Ky): あなた すぐにせんせいに みていただいたほうがいいわ! せんせい!!きゅうかんです!! You should go see the doctor right away! Doctor!! It's an emergency!!

Fanny Defeated Quotes
(These are the quotes these characters say to Fanny when they defeat her.)
Sol Badguy: かんごふってのは、みな、こうだったか? Are all nurses like this?
Ky Kiske: かんごふ というのもまた からだをはる しごとなのですね。 I suppose being a nurse, too, is quite the physically demanding line of work.
May: ボクもずっと すきなひと さがしてたからわかるよ。そのきもち。 I'm always chasing after someone I like, too. So I get how you feel.
Millia Rage: さいきん えだげが ひどいのよね。 いいくすりしらない? I've been having awful split ends lately. Do you know any remedy for that?
Potemkin: ずいぶん かわった たたかいだったな… That sure was a strange battle…
Kuradoberi Jam: ちょっと、やりすぎたアル…って ねてるアルか? Whoops, I think I overdid it… Wait- Are you asleep?
Mito Anji: 「まてば かいろのひよりあり」ってね がんばって さがしな "Good things come to those who wait", you know. So hang in there and keep on searching, alright?
(Translator's Note: What Anji says in the first line is a Japanese idiom that would literally translate to “waiting for fair weather at a sea route”, in case you’re curious. But it does essentially mean “Good things come to those who can wait.”)
Johnny: とう「ジェリーフィッシュかいぞくだん」では チャーミングなナース ぼしゅうちゅうだ むかしのおとこ わすれさせてやるぜ? The Jellyfish Pirates are looking to hire a charming nurse right now, so what d'ya say? I'll make you forget all about that other guy.
Faust: 「いりょうのみちは いちにちしてならず。」 かんじゃへの あいのみに いきるべきです。 "The path of medicine isn't forged in a day." You should live only for your love towards your patients.
Chipp Zanuff: へんなねーちゃんだな? おれはどこもけがしちゃいねーけどな。 What's with this chick? I wasn't even hurt anywhere.
Axl Low: 「はくいのてんし」はすきだけど もうちょっと おとなしいほうがすきだぜ? I do like "white angels", but… I'd like it even better if you were a bit more gentle, eh?
Zato-1 (Eddie): モウオソイワ コイツトオレハキリハナセンヨ。 YOU ARE TOO LATE. HE AND I CANNOT BE SEPERATED.
Testament: わたしに いりょうなど ひつようない。 I have no need for medical care.
GG Sol Badguy: かんごふがくるとこじゃねぇぜ、ここは。 This is no place for a nurse.
GG May: さいきんのかんごふって ずいぶん つよいのね? Nurses are pretty tough these days, huh?
GG Millia Rage: ボーっとしてるから…。 That's what you get for spacing out…
GG Ky Kiske (Robo-Ky): カカカンゴフ トトトトイウノモモモマタ カカカラダヲハル ㇱ、シゴトナノデスネネ。 I- I- I SUPPOSE BEING A- A- A- A- A NURSE, T-T-TOO, IS QUITE T-T-T-THE PHYSICALLY D-DEMANDING LINE OF WORK-K.

Extremely cute comic. The text next to Roger took entirely too long to obtain. Been having a bad string of luck with Google Keep in general.
Cleaned & Original under the cut.
If you know Japanese and retranslate this, get in contact with me with your translation and I'll update this.

The tree was surprisingly not difficult at all to redraw.
Nothing interesting with the translation today.
Honestly, you don't even need to understand Japanese; as long as you can recognize the characters and send them to me so I don't need to spend hours picking them apart, get in contact with me (lol).

a little translation i've done of Taiga Ichigo's work in one of the Guilty Gear X Plus 4koma Kings book!
a quick translator's note - as for the untranslated kanji near the bottom, it typically means rice, but can also be slang for America in some contexts - it's hard to decipher the meaning, but has some weight here. it could be a double entendre for Anji being a Japanese in America, it could just mean rice - though it does seem like the America connotations are important with this kanji in this specific selection... or maybe it's just the X and + put together. who knows. if anyone has any further context please do let me know!

Hello Mr. Radguy, hope you are doing good. Would you mind translating an Anji 4koma? He's my favourite :)
This is the first time I've translated anything with Anji in it and I'm not sure how often he's like this since I'm not very familiar with him, but oh my god was he fun to translate. Thanks for requesting him!
Tumblr media
Some notes: He does actually 100% say "sexy" in that line in katakana, セクシー. Anji uses "ore-sama" (俺様)throughout this strip too. "Ore" is a highly masculine casual first-person pronoun and "sama" is an extremely respectful honorific generally used for people with high/important social status (doctors, important political figures, etc). So combining them and using it to refer to one's self would be like parading around calling yourself King Hot Shit haha It's hard to get into English though, so I had to uh... Get Creative™️.

All Fanny Moves Translated (Guilty Gear Petit)
I wanted to do a quick translation of all of Fanny's named moves, cause they are fun.
And I thought maybe some of you would be interested in these too, so here you go-
--
とばしますよ “Here comes the shot”
Fanny fires a tiny Fanny from her syringe. In Petit 1, this move only fired a blob of goop instead.
Tumblr media
Translator’s Note: This move’s name is a bit awkward for translating directly, cause the verb used has many different translations depending on the context.
Here it refers to the launching/firing/etc. of the projectile from Fanny’s syringe, and you could translate it as anything along the lines of “I’ll shoot/fire/launch” or the like.
I liked going with the phrasing of “Here comes the shot”, because of the double meaning in English.
-
ささりますよ “Here comes the jab”
Fanny jumps onto her syringe, assuming her pogo stance. In Petit 2, she moves forward and does damage while doing this. In Petit 1, she only assumed the stance.
Tumblr media
Translator’s Note: Another slightly awkward one- more literally translated it’d be “I’ll stick/pierce/jab”, referring to her sticking the needle into the ground.
Like before, I liked using the phrasing “Here comes the jab” because of the double meaning in English.
-
ご機嫌いかが? “How are you feeling today?”
(During pogo stance) Fanny hops forward.
Tumblr media
-
そしてさようなら “And, Goodbye”
(During pogo stance) Fanny hops backward.
Tumblr media
-
上に伸びます “Stretching up”
(During pogo stance) Fanny jabs upwards with her head.
Tumblr media
-
横に伸びます “Stretching forward”
(During pogo stance) Fanny jabs forward with her head.
Tumblr media
-
下におります “Going down”
(During pogo stance) Fanny swings down from her syringe, returning to her normal stance.
Tumblr media
-
ちょっと痛いですよ “This will hurt a bit”
Fanny stabs with her syringe.
Tumblr media
-
呼び戻し “Call Back”
Follow-up to “This will hurt a bit”, Fanny pulls the stabbed opponent closer.
Tumblr media
Translator’s Note: This move actually has the same name as Dr. Baldhead’s version of it. Faust’s version is called “Pull Back” instead.
Also, in the official English localization of Guilty Gear Missing Link, this move was left untranslated as “Yobi Modoshi”, so if you want to be super accurate, you’d go with that.
-
採血しますね。 “I'll take a blood sample.”
Follow-up to “Call Back”, Fanny draws blood from the opponent.
Tumblr media
-
ちょっと貧血気味なんです。 "I'm a little anemic."
Fanny faints onto a hospital bed, smacking into her opponent.
In Petit 1, the move functioned a bit differently, with the setting up of the bed being the active frames, and Fanny would fall asleep even on a miss (but the animation was shorter.)
Tumblr media
-
死の119番 “119 of Death”
Fanny calls an ambulance, inside of which the opponent is most likely harmed.
In Petit 1, Fanny herself was driving the ambulance, and the opponent (and Fanny, it seems) would emerge with an afro or the like.
In Petit 2, an unnamed character drives the ambulance while Fanny is taking care of the opponent inside. The opponent also no longer gains an afro, but Fanny seemingly still does?
Tumblr media
Translator’s Note: The move’s name “119 of Death” refers to “119”, which is the emergency call number used in Japan. So, if one were to localize this into English, one could go with something like “911 of Death” (for America), “112 of Death” (Europe), or perhaps “000 of Death” (Australia?)
I considered going for what would make the most sense in-universe, but Fanny’s own location isn’t entirely clear. After all, GGX and by extension Petit has stages all over Eurasia, and beyond, too. Her home stage Nirvana doesn’t have a confirmed location on Earth, so that’s not helping. Fanny herself also happens to be one of the few characters with no confirmed country of origin (it’s just listed as “unknown”), so no dice there, either.
And most importantly, there’s the fact that… phones don’t exist anymore in this world. Yes, a “phone spell” does exist, but that one isn’t used by the average person, and even then, I highly doubt they’d still use the same emergency numbers as we do today, assuming they have any at all.
So really, this move’s name is more for us, the audience. And since the official Guilty Gear English localizations are pretty American-oriented, I’d bet an official one would go for “911 of Death” in this case, if they wouldn’t change it entirely.
(Probably thinking too hard about this.)

This one is just great. The implication that the bed has an actual mattress and not, like, a brick just to make the instant kill suck even more. And of course, it's extremely cute.

Had some fun (tm) with the stamp tool. I'm almost glad that the words in the second panel didn't translate, because redrawing that would have been terrifying... Fun too, though.
Nothing interesting to say translation wise. The characters next to Testament's friend [ 寝技 ] translated as [ sleeping pills ] or [ pinning technique, lie down (through skill) ]. I went with the pinning technique since that's easier to make into something funny in English.

i said i wanted to try my hand at translating some stuff so i was like yeah screw it im gonna find something with robo-ky in it and see what i get!!
tfw this joke stopped working after x plus when they changed robo-kys palette to that green/gray plating instead of flesh colored lmaooo
translation notes under the cut:
my knowledge of japanese is extremely minimal (i keep telling myself im gonna go back to studying it but im lazy) and i still rely on a translator, but i can read hiragana and katakana with ease (and thank god for furigana bc i cant read kanji lmao) and i can understand small words and phrases. hopefully this translation is faithful enough!
i revised the comic title to a western localized robo-ky pun, as the original title also contained a pun in japanese that didnt quite translate well into english. the original comic title was "れボカイ" which was a pun on a word meaning "self-recognition" which, in the context of the comic, was a joke about how characters cant seem to distinguish robo-ky from regular ky.
the original comic can be seen here
