At least, that was what Harry thought, until he was hired as a computer specialist for a spinoff agency called carish, whose true purpose was to reveal CitizenX’s tangled web of lies.

As if the whole ‘industrial spy’ business was not stressful enough, Harry found himself in a hatred-at-first-sight relationship with one of his new coworkers, Louis, a man intent on detesting Harry.

When the worst happened and Harry and Louis found themselves thrown together in hiding, with only each other to rely on, Harry never could have predicted the turn their relationship would take.

Nor could he anticipate that it would all be taken away from him and he would have to decide how far he was willing to go to get Louis back.

It's Coming Out Week at university, and Harry's taken on a lot of responsibilities to make everything run smoothly. Finding his roommate's boyfriend attractive is making that a bit difficult, unfortunately. It might help if he realized that said boyfriend (Louis) is really just there to help said roommate (Liam) figure out if Liam's crush (Zayn) likes him back.

But that would make things too easy.

A fic where a hastily faked relationship and a lot of miscommunication almost ruins a perfectly good dance.

Ah, thanks for the ask, Shai! I feel like I’m constantly going back and forth on which fic I like the most, so this is the vibe today, at least.

Little by Little - This fic was so important to me as I was writing it. I felt a lot of things for these characters, and it was fun playing with scents as more emotion-based than smells.

Party Lines - This started as a prompt from a fic game! The most smut without the characters ever touching each other in person lmao

Single Bells Ring - I have never gotten as much positive feedback about an OC as I did with one in this fic 😅 Writing Louis’ flirting was the highlight here.

Been Waitin' (After Weekend After Weekend After) - This might be cheating a little, but I think the full fic of this storyline will be one of my favorites whenever I publish it (still in rewriting/draft stage, but it's close!). I wrote bits of this part in a Slack chat with my bestie, and it was cool to take that and turn it into a fic (and part 1 of (almost) exes to lovers).

Surfing the Crowd to You - My first published fic, my beloved <3. It doesn't happen often for me, but sometimes things just lift so perfectly from real life into a story, and the concert festival in this was that for me. Always in my heart, etc, etc.

“Harry,” the swordsmen speaks before Harry can, his voice low and steady though confusion laces each word.

Harry’s breath catches. Every string around his heart, all the protection he spent nine months building, rips out and tears open all at once as he says, “Hi Louis.”

AU: Nine months after they break up, a twist of fate brings Harry and Louis back together at Christmas.

Harry is sitting there, so fucking casual, and Louis realizes in a split second he was not ready. When Harry walked out in Detroit and never looked back, he was a boy verging on a man, still only twenty years old, but there's a man in his place now. The soft, directness of his gaze, the hesitant smile he gives to Lou, the way he wrings his ridiculously large hands in his lap.

He's a little bit the eager sixteen year old puppy dog again, his innocence and sweetness resurrected miraculously, and Louis freezes in place. He was prepared to face the asshole Harry. He was prepared to meet a whole new Harry.

Louis is not prepared to meet one of the old incarnations of Harry, and it absolutely tears him up.

Or the fic where Harry spirals out of control, the band breaks up, and then he shows back up, five years later.

Louis blinks his eyes open, his eyelids fluttering as the room swims around him. He takes several gulps of beer once he confirms that he’s definitely not hallucinating, that the very first portrait Harry Styles ever painted of him is hanging on that wall.

Louis stares at the wall, his heart jackrabbiting in his chest as he realizes that there’s not just one painting of him, there’s five, the portraits lined up like they’re some sort of storyboard depicting the rise and fall of his deepest love. His greatest heartache. A pain that cut him so deep that he left the fucking country, severing all ties with his life in New York, now suddenly surrounding him as if he’d never left.

Fucking shit motherfucker fuck.

Louis returns to New York City five years after he left it – and the love of his life – behind. He didn’t intend to see Harry again, but fate has a funny way of pulling them together, whether they like it or not. After making a begrudging truce, they both start to wonder: Would it be so bad if history repeated itself?

This year I craved stories that transported me somewhere else. So in addition to my usual weakness for angst, I sought out fics with surprising plots and excellent world-building. His arch-nemesis Louis knocks on his dorm-room door in the middle of a pampering self-care night and sees the side of Harry that he keeps hidden. What follows is a fantastic gAyBO story about repressing, exploring, and accepting your true self. There is a strong cast of OT5 and related people that keep you laughing and believing. Honestly, I need to re-read this right now.

Get ready to be absolutely consumed by this parallel universe and the angst-ridden reality of Louis, pretend alpha and head of security, and Harry, feminine alpha and new-hire. There is enjoyable intrigue, mystery, crying, sex, political philosophizing, and some spy movie shit as Louis attempts to right wrongs and push back against those in power. OT5 pop up in surprising and satisfying ways. However, perhaps most notable to me was the attention to detail in how Louis deals with pretending to be a gender he is not. (Perhaps don’t read while in your gender dysphoria feels but do read to feel seen.)

It turns out this doesn’t actually solve his problems, though, and new issues emerge from what was supposed to be a simple friends-with-benefits arrangement.

Hollywood actor Harry Styles is gutted when the man he can’t stand gets the Scorsese role he wanted. It gets worse when their teams conspire to set them up in a fake relationship to promote the film. I read this fic in the first days of 2023, so the details are a bit blurry in my memory. I know I loved the enemies to lovers arc, the strong Ziam subplot, and Harry obsessing over his unavailable crush (which isn’t Louis). In my comment, I wrote, “My heart absolutely ached with the pining and angst, and the sexual tension was so palpable.”

This canon-based fic was so steamy and tender. Photos of Louis performing in a tanktop get Harry going. What follows is some long-distance edging and fun. It features soft Dom Louis and desperate Harry and just really hits all the right notes in my opinion.

This is a comfort fic. It’s got hilarious fluff about best friends who realize what their inner alpha and omega knew all along. (The rest of the gang might be in on the secret too.) I’m almost amazed by fics that manage to pull me in with believable characters and storylines without any angst, and this one delivers on every front. You’ll be grinning the whole time.

Coax the Cold by MediaWhore @mediawhorefics Mature | 86k | Mermaid / Historical AU

Professor Tomlinson is fascinated by the occult. When a circus advertises a unique sea creature, he decides to go undercover as a janitor to get close. He plans to write the paper that will finally prove he was right about the existence of fantastical creatures. This author expertly builds the world of this fic – 1800s Britain, academia, and freak shows. I loved the believable cast of characters (OT5 and more!) and the stakes that are set, including the horrid antagonists.

Harry and Louis childhood best friends who grew up and discovered love together in a quiet village. Harry manages asthma and chronic illness that often leaves him homebound with his books, but Louis always keeps him company. Their simple life is turned upside down when Louis is drafted in WWI and does not return home. Then, when Harry finally finds him, Louis doesn’t remember anything. This story was a tearjerker but so beautifully written. I adored that portions of the story were told in letters and that Harry often referred to literary works. Bonus: This fic has amazing visuals by whenthebodiesspeak.

Harry wants to play, but Louis is busy watching football, so he asks Harry to wait. I haven’t stopped thinking about this domestic and sexy little slice of life since I read it in January of 2023. My comment said “simple and perfect,” and I still agree.

Someone wrote the Music for a Sushi Restaurant fic of my dreams. Half-man, half-squid, with the voice of an angel, Harry is quite the catch. Louis, an exhausted and lonely restaurant employee, is tasked with keeping an eye on the special find. This story was so entertaining and sweet. It filled me up with good vibes and left me happier than I started.

“I don’t want you for a night, Harry,” Louis said as he wrenched Harry's hands from his hips and pushed them into Harry's chest, grip tight around his wrists. Harry sucked in a sharp breath, heart thundering in his chest when Louis didn't let go, and instead leaned in, lips brushing Harry's ear as he whispered, “And you won’t touch me like you touch them.”

Harry huffed a laugh, his entire body flushing hot at the rejection, and he looked down at their hands tangled together and pressed against his bare skin, wondering if the blush heating his chest and neck and face was visible. The floodlights at the entrance to the marina barely reached where they stood, and the lights along the length of the dock were meant to illuminate the path without ruining the view.

“You don’t want me to suck your cock, Louis?” Harry asked, annoyed at the tremor in his voice. He looked away, focusing on their boats docked side by side—the contrast of the gleaming white and cool blue of Louis’ late model yacht and the dull green hull of Harry's ancient cabin cruiser beside it an excellent visual metaphor. Shaking off his agitation, Harry cleared his throat and turned back, holding Louis’ gaze and pitching his voice lower, “I could take every inch of you. You could fuck my mouth… My throat… I can make you feel good, Louis. Better than you’ve—”

“No,” Louis snapped, quiet but demanding, and Harry bit his lip hard enough to hurt. Water lapped at the pilings, the bumpers knocking the edges of the dock and against the boats, the air tranquil except for Harry's harsh breaths. Staring unabashedly at Harry, Louis licked his lips, and moved in closer, crowding Harry, forcing him to hold his ground or step back, and for a brief, brilliant moment, Harry thought he was finally going to be kissed. Then Louis shrugged, releasing Harry's hands, and said, “All or nothing.”

He left Harry standing there and returned to his boat. The lights on Louis’ yacht flicked off, and Harry gasped, holding a hand to his bare chest where Louis had touched him. Shaking his head, Harry tried to rid himself of the heavy, desperate want, but it clung to him.

An hour later and it’s still there, thrumming alongside his heartbeat.
