BOTD: Clark's Grebe

"Described to science in 1858, Clark's Grebe was soon dismissed as a mere variant of Western Grebe, and thereafter was ignored for over a century. Studies in the 1970s and 1980s showed that Western and Clark's, though extremely similar, are actually two distinct species. Minor differences in face pattern, bill color, and voice seem to be enough to prevent the two from interbreeding most of the time, even where they nest in mixed colonies. Apparent hybrids have been found, but they are a minority of the population. Although Clark's may be found with Western Grebes at all seasons, it tends to associate more with its own kind."

6/3/23-Home and Lakeside 

Photos taken in this set: 1. Blue flowers on the balcony one of a few looking nice there again including crocus too. 2. A lovely Common Gull seen well at Lakeside again at lunch time. 3. Greylag Geese at Lakeside. 4. Black-headed Gull on a buoy at Lakeside. 5. View at Lakeside. 6. A stunning pair of Great Crested Grebes nestled among a colourful pattern of fallen catkins on the lake’s surface a key feature of my walk today. 7. A view at Lakeside. 8. The pair of Great Crested Grebes later on doing a bit of the weed dance which it was a treat to see once more seeing these and another pair on another lake diving together and coming together too. I have been truly spoiled the with the amazing views I’ve got of this courting species here the last week and a half or so. 9. Starlings out the back on the roof visible from my room it was nice to see them piling onto this whilst working today. 10. A beautiful sunset tonight on a strong day for seeing dramatic sky scenes with the filling Worm Moon peeking through clouds this evening. 

Other avian highlights at Lakeside today were Long-tailed Tit, Great Tit, Wren, Moorhen, Tufted Ducks and brilliant views of a big bustling group of House Sparrows in the allotment hedges by the entrance. I was delighted to see at least one buzzing bee too and a variety of daffodils. At home it was soothing to hear a chorus of Magpies with their pica pica call at one point and good to see Goldfinches on the balcony feeders when coming back from my lunch time walk.
