There were quite a few Pied-billed Grebes out at Lee Kay Ponds this past weekend. I was able to get a couple of shots of this one above the water. They dive constantly looking for food.

Unique beaks: the nighthawk and pied billed grebe
I find the common nighthawk quite the fun creature, it has a quite small looking beak which opens a great deal larger than you'd expect.
I spotted it while playing the bird based card game Wingspan with my housemates, and thought it was so interesting how it looked like a hawk with its beak cut off improperly.
The wide opening mouth is achieved with an almost Pacman like motion, as you can see.
(Video source, which is a display of their sound)
Along with their sounds, they hiss in defense of their nest, and have a tweeting and booming noise as they fly.
Another similarly strange beaked bird I spotted was the lovely pied billed grebe, which are fairly unique among waterfowl in their short thick beak. Good for eating crustacean I suppose.
Always good to see some unique creatures, cheers!
