We’ve planned to hike Lake Balboa a few times, but always chickened out in the end. There’s nothing scary about it, but we tend to prefer more natural hikes. The nearby Sepulveda Basin Wildlife Reserve is just as manmade, but it looks natural. And the signs say please don’t feed the wildlife.

We don’t, but plenty of people ignore the signs.

Lake Balboa actually has signs that invite people to feed the birds. And they do.

No sooner had we walked toward Lake Balboa than the ducks started waddling toward us.

The first two pics are of a natural creek that’s much more like our usual hike environs.

Pics 7 & 8 show a large and very aggressive muscovy duck we would encounter later during our picnic. You can also see it in the nineth photo crowding around a mother feeding the birds.

Adopt the pace of Nature, Her secret is patience.⁠ -Ralph Waldo Emerson⁠ ⁠ When I slow down and step into rhythm with Nature, a beautiful sense of peace takes over. ⁠ Patience is a key value in gardening, birdwatching, and hiking as we cannot rush a seed and we cannot rush the change of the seasons. ⁠ ⁠ We have a lovely nature reserve here in Lake Balboa, which is where this photo was taken.⁠ There are many species of water fowl at this reserve, and most of the time it is serene and peaceful. It is one of the many spots I love to go to around the area, one of my many little Nature escapes in LA.⁠ ⁠ The quiet times I spend in Nature's rhythm are times where I have experienced relief, stillness and connection. ⁠ I sometimes hear the answers to questions I have been pondering, and other times the songs of the birds carry my worries away (even if just momentarily). ⁠ I experience moments of awe and wonderment, something so fleeting in this age of quick videos, short attention spans and scrolling. ⁠ ⁠ Time I decide to spend in nature is always beneficial to my mental and physical health. I put the phone away and become present with my surroundings.
