Are these geoducks ? They're all over Burning Shores, I know nothing about this stuff and searching online for "geoduck colony" mostly brings up stuff about how they look so much like a dong haha, and literally nothing of interest for my search T_T Edit : Apparently, they are gooseneck barnacles ! Mystery solved :D

Live Alaskan Percebes 🐚🦐🦐🐚
AKA Gooseneck Barnacles, these wild looking shellfish are as esteemed and elusive as anything we carry. Tough to find, difficult and dangerous to harvest, and often disappointingly demure, these jumbo and juicy catches will turn anyone into an admirer.
Revered in Iberian cuisines, Barnacles have a tender, smooth texture that is similar to razor clams, a comparison echoed in their flavor, somewhere snugly between clams and shrimp.
The rocky, frigid seascape off the Alaskan coast is owed much of the credit for how beautiful these particular selections turn out, and the rest belongs to the talented, knowledgeable fishers who astutely time their treks among the boulders to bring these Barnacles home.

Note
mostly was thinking about these because making an oc based off them and also because of the things known as barnacles in half life, but animal rec for today: pelagic gooseneck barnacles and barnacle geese. pelagic gooseneck barnacles color scheme is genuinely so appealing. it's cream, dark brown, mahogany (cilia), and gold, what more could you want? barnacle geese are just nice geese, but come to mind because of the old barnacle goose myth connecting them to goose barnacles. you probably already know it, though! ^_^
oh whoa! i dont know too much about barnacles, this is wild to me.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
apparently the myth is that the geese emerged fully formed from barnacles. kind of obsessed. in ye olde days i probably wouldve also looked at the geese and been like this sprouted off a barnacle cluster.

Image : Plastic debris with a mix of coastal barnacles (pink and striped) and a gooseneck barnacle from the open ocean SERC Marine Invasions Lab
Coastal creatures are flourishing in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. Floating plastic pollution is creating a new habitat in the open ocean, one where coastal animals can prosper. In a new study, ecologists analyzed 105 pieces of debris from the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. They found hundreds of marine invertebrates, belonging to 37 groups which they once thought could survive only on the coasts. The discovery heralds a new era in efforts to fight invasive species, when animals can cross entire oceans on plastic rafts. It’s also a shakeup for once-stable ecosystems on the high seas: The newcomers are grabbing space from ocean-open animals and occasionally even eating them.

Tillamook Bay, Oregon.
Speaking of beachcombing, the coast along Oregon’s Tillamook Bay is perfect for just that. At low tide, spots such as the Three Graces rock formation (pictured above) invite beach and tidal pool exploration, as well as bird-watching and sandcastle building. (There’s also ice cream at the Tillamook Creamery!) Just don’t bother the gooseneck barnacles, which look like the toes of a sleeping dragon sticking out from the rocks. They are a briny seafood delicacy but are actually quite fragile, so conservationists urge visitors to avoid disturbing them.

escapril day one: vision of the future
So this is how it ends, huh?
Saltwater waves lapping at the remains of the earth
Like the tongue of a newborn kitten.
Gooseneck barnacles clinging to the
Bones
Of the last man on earth, oh if
Darwin
Could see it now, humanity evolved into
Nothing.
We return not to ashes
But to the sea.

Tag Game: Your Writing Education
Thank you for the tag, @void-botanist.
Passing the tag to @fearofahumanplanet, @cljordan-imperium, @blind-the-winds, and the usual open tag for anyone else who may wish to join.
About: What are some of the things your writing has inspired you to learn (more) about?
One of the most recent things I found myself looking up for Empty Names was the effects of cold water immersion and hypothermia.
Meanwhile for The Archivist's Journal I wound up asking if there are any species of snakes that eat crabs (yes, multiple) and what the largest species of barnacle is and if it's edible (giant acorn barnacles, and yes they're edible, as are gooseneck barnacles).
