DUCKVEMBER 13: Wrong Duck
I am fascinated by the barnacle goose myth, in which the medieval bestiaries tells us that geese were born from trees like little podlings. The reasoning is actually quite fascinating, and I recommend this video on it

Barnacle Goose (branta leucopsis)
The Barnacle Goose is so named because they were originally believed to be born fully-formed from the goose barnacle. Because of this myth, Catholics abstaining from meat during Lent would still eat this bird, because it was considered a fish due to this supposed origin.
note: any fact containing mention of birds being eaten will be tagged as 'birds as food tw' if you would like to block this tag.

these ones are of course based on goose barnacles/barnacle geese, and the myth that barnacle geese emerged from barnacles instead of from eggs. other myths told of barnacle geese growing straight from trees, like the vegetable lamb, which quarantine crystal also features!

Note
mostly was thinking about these because making an oc based off them and also because of the things known as barnacles in half life, but animal rec for today: pelagic gooseneck barnacles and barnacle geese. pelagic gooseneck barnacles color scheme is genuinely so appealing. it's cream, dark brown, mahogany (cilia), and gold, what more could you want? barnacle geese are just nice geese, but come to mind because of the old barnacle goose myth connecting them to goose barnacles. you probably already know it, though! ^_^
oh whoa! i dont know too much about barnacles, this is wild to me.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
apparently the myth is that the geese emerged fully formed from barnacles. kind of obsessed. in ye olde days i probably wouldve also looked at the geese and been like this sprouted off a barnacle cluster.

The Goose Tree
Tumblr media
Source: Pinterest posted by ipinimg.com
One this day in 1807 a Captain Bytheway (suspicions immediately aroused!) attempted to demonstrate that the by then largely debunked medieval theory that geese were the fruit of barnacle-covered Goose Trees was in fact true, by claiming to have discovered several of the said trees on Orkney. The fable went that infant geese sprang from the black and white shellfish that encrusted the bark of the trees concerned. When investigated, trees in both Orkney and Barrow-in-Furness were indeed to be found covered in barnacles but, amazingly, no geese chicks were observed emerging from them. To the despair of serious naturalists, this “research” took on a life of its own for a while, with an entire alternative school of biology developing to explain the ins and outs of the Barnacle Goose in response to what was almost certainly a practical joke.
The origins of this myth may lie in Judaic, and later Christian, attempts to classify geese as fruits of the trees so they could comprise part of the kosher diet and be acceptable consumption over Lent. The reason for this may lie in Hebrew puzzlement at the sudden arrival of migrating geese in the Eastern Mediterranean and the emergence of the belief that they must have sprung forth from somewhere, rather than flown thousands of miles from Northern Europe in the autumn. The later Christian belief may actually have been a knowing scam to permit the eating of some meat in Lent.

Fun Fact Friday!
Did you know that the gooseneck barnacle gets its name from a popular myth that it will eventually grow into a goose? Due to similar color patterns the 𝘉𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘢 𝘭𝘦𝘶𝘤𝘰𝘱𝘴𝘪𝘴 (otherwise known as the Barnacle Goose) was believed to have developed underwater as a barnacle over the summer. In reality the gooseneck barnacle is a filter feeding crustacean that wouldn’t even begin to know how to fly.

As a marine biologist and artist I’ve always loathed the Binacle/ Barbaracle pokemon line! I redesigned them based on a medeaval myth and some wonderfully weird biology. Pokedex entries and an explanation of the design inspo under the cut!
Fowling  (Rock-Water)
Abilities: Rough skin or Shell Armor
Pokedex entry: Fowlings sit in one spot, using feathery wings to breathe and sift food from the water. Huge groups of them will colonize ships and docks, making them quite a nuisance.
Inspiration: Acorn barnacles and goose barnacles. Anyone who has stepped on barnacles with bare feet understand that Rough Skin is a perfect ability for a barnacle pokeomon. Real barnacles use modified thoracic appendages (called cirri) to exchange gasses and capture food. Cirri do look quite a lot like wings, which leads us to….
Barnabeak (Rock-Flying)
Evolution: Evolves from Fowling at level 30.  Abilities:  Rough skin or Big pecks
Pokedex entry: Flocks of Barnabeak mysteriously disappear in winter. Where they go and how they manage to fly with such heavy wings is a unknown.
Inspiration: The barnacle goose myth! In the middle ages, people never saw barnacle geese in winter, and never saw them lay eggs. But they did see some suspiciously goose-like things attached to driftwood. They had long curving necks, a protective eggshell, and even had feathers on the inside! In reality, these were goose barnacles (not baby geese). While it’s pretty obvious today that barnacle geese lay eggs during their winter migration, the myth is based on solid observations of the natural world.
Kentrogon (Rock-Ghost)
Evolution: Evolves from ♀ Fowling when Krabby is in the party.  Abilities: Cursed Body or Parasite*
Pokedex entry: This pokemon staggers about as if in a daze. Only the long rubbery arms show any sign of awareness of the outside world.
Inspiration:  Parasitic barnacles in the genus Sacculina. These barnacles are rather nasty parasites of crabs: a female Sacculina extends roots into the body of a crab, which wrap themselves around internal organs (including the brain) and absorb nutrients. The crab loses its ability to molt (so it can no longer regrow limbs) and is sterilized. If male, its hormones are altered to make its body more female. The parasitized crab then nurtures of the external part of the parasite like its own clutch of eggs!
*Parasite ability: When this pokemon is knocked out, the opposing pokemon is infested by parasites that drain their health. (Essentially, Aftermath that causes leech seed)

Follyglass : Delft
What an ornately painted cat you have there! By the looks of the markings, it must be two hundred years old. Quite a beauty!
And you want a litter of the same design! Oh, how lovely, how charming they’ll be. I’m glad to be of assistance in your endeavor.
Are you ready?
Well, to get more, you must first break the original, I’m sorry to say. It is the dirty secret of porcelain catteries.
Oh, I know it’s hard. Especially when you’ve carefully wrapped the cat in linen, and you’re about to bring the hammer to it. Trust that everyone’s been there, holding breath, with doubt heavily perched on the hammer claw.
Just think of all of the beautiful blue and white patterned kittens you’ll have in spring. How marvelous!
But the hammer, you say. Isn’t there another way, you ask.
Oh, bother. There have been volumes of alchemical texts that have instructed a myriad of ways to make an exact replica. But this was back in the time that people thought that geese came from trees.
Of course regular husbandry methods have been employed. Many have tried pairing cats of the same delft variety, and they might end up with Sevres kittens, which of course are gorgeous in their own garish way (and many collectors think they’re absolutely the most gorgeous cats of all time forever and ever amen).
But you might not like Sevres. Or Amberg. Or Royal Doulton.
And if you’re hesitant to break- and if you can find and afford them- there are professional shatterers. Which, of course, includes real cats, ha ha. Oh, those fuzzy little scientists and their dedication to expanding knowledge of the theory of gravity.
What you must know is that after your porcelain cat is shattered, find as many shards as you can and wrap the whole thing in blue silk, then bury it all when the constellation Felis begins to rise and before the ground goes winter solid. I know it’ll feel very much like a funeral, and I’m sorry, but you must carry through with all of the steps. To keep away the gribblengs, plant paperwhites around the hole. Hyacinths work, too. Some say even better, but they might be getting the myth of Hyacinth’s death and the flower’s birth confused with porcelain cat cloning.
In spring, when the paperwhites begin to bend, look for the porcelain kittens emerging from the soil. Often, they look like pale eggs. Carefully dig them up, rinse them off, and place them in a sunny location for their patterns to fully cure. Some say playing violin for them will make them stronger. I’ve a directory of players you can contact, but if you would just like to play the radio, that’s probably ok, too.
When you have your dozen porcelain cats, you’ll begin to notice little things. That one’s eye is a twitch more mischievous. This one’s tail curves slightly less. Though they look identical, the kittens never really are the same as the original, are they?
But you'll be able to pass them onto your children, and that's what really matters, isn't it?

Quote
The barnacle goose was first classified taxonomically by Johann Matthäus Bechstein in 1803. Branta is a Latinised form of Old Norse Brandgás, "burnt (black) goose" and the specific epithet is from the Ancient Greek leukos "white", and opsis "faced".[2] The barnacle goose and the similar brant goose were previously considered one species, formerly believed to be essentially the same creature as the barnacle. This gave rise to the English name of the barnacle goose and the scientific name of the brant.[2] It is sometimes claimed that the word comes from a Celtic word for "limpet", but the sense-history seems to go in the opposite direction.[3] The barnacle myth can be dated back to at least the 12th century. Gerald of Wales claimed to have seen these birds hanging down from pieces of timber, William Turner accepted the theory, and John Gerard claimed to have seen the birds emerging from their shells. The legend persisted until the end of the 18th century. In County Kerry, until relatively recently, Catholics could eat this bird on a Friday because it counted as fish.[4] In Judaism birds that grow on trees are not kosher.[5]
